COVID-19 is pushing notaries into the digital age

"To create wills online for quite some time but the thing is that after you create a will you probably have to get it. Notarized and that is usually an in-person transaction recent years lots of states have made laws to allow digital motorization and the cove in nineteen outbreak has pushed more states to do the same as more and more people are making wills online one of those people is Meghan Bowen about six weeks ago. She was home in Reno Nevada when she started to feel sick. I started to get a fever and a headache shortness of breath and thought. Oh no what if I have this? She's forty five with two kids. Who are both teenagers? She's divorced and she just never gotten around to creating a will or medical directive is enough to make me go wow. I'm not being very responsible for my kids. Future need to clean this up so and called Nicole. Harvey an attorney. Based in Reno who specializes in estate. Planning Nevada. Had a stay at home order in place and Harvey's office was closed so for the first time in my practice we're doing electronic wills which entails remote notary. Nevada is one of twenty three states that have permanent online motorization laws. In place. Notaries in those states use an online platform validate clients identity by comparing their face on video. Chat to their photo ideas. And asking a series of questions like you'd see a credit check. One question might be zero are five addresses which one of these or you associated with in nineteen sixty eight. That's Bill Anderson Vice President of government affairs at the National Notary Association. A trade group then the lawyer the clients and the notary all meet on video the client signs the documents with mouse clicks. Everything's recorded the online notary platform. Say It's just as secure as an in person transaction so it's easy in those twenty three states. The other states are rushing out solutions. Many of the state executive orders put in place temporary procedures for being able to notarize documents using video conference type solutions like Zoom. Another twenty three states. Now let notaries do their jobs using a combination of video and document sharing Anderson says these emergency versions are a little less secure. But it's still something and the Senate Judiciary Committee is considering a bill that would allow online notification. One downside remote motorization costs more because of platform an extra licensing fees. The National Notary Association says the National Average is twenty five dollars to get something notarized online in person services top out more like fifteen bucks but doing everything on. Line can also make the difficult task of creating a will a lot less intimidating. Here's Megan Bowen again. I Pictured Estate Planning and Trusts in Wales long meetings in back and forth and collecting lots of pieces of paper in reviewing things over and over again and it was so much simpler than that and also on the plus side. Bowen is feeling fine now and hopefully won't need that will anytime soon

How Reno, Nevada, turned its economy into a small powerhouse

"Berlin Wall came down thirty years ago tomorrow. As we've been reporting this week Germany opted to spend a fortune uniting the lagging lagging east with the more dynamic west. What if the United States opted to spend this kind of money nearly ten trillion dollars over thirty years adjusted for population size to unite the strongest strongest and weakest parts of the American economy McKinsey Global Institute this year analyzed which US counties towns and cities will thrive with more technology hitting the the economy and which areas will fall further behind without rethinking or new investment? Today let's get a snapshot from place that's turned itself into a bonafide technology hub in the space of ten years. It's the Reno sparks area in northwestern Nevada once known for a fading Casino Vibe. The region gained nearly fifteen thousand thousand jobs in just the last year. Hillary she is the mayor of Renault. Welcome thank you for having me now. You have land compared to the San Francisco Bay area. You got low rent. You've got three hundred twenty days of sunshine a year. I'd like to say that Reno just got lucky but give us a sense of the ways that you got the boom to come come to you. Well you have to remember. We were the highest in for closures and unemployment during the recession. So kind of hate to say it but really there was only one other way to go. And that's up but I think we really looked at our city really sort of played upon the things that were already here but were sort of not really being highlighted and some of that was arts and culture we have one of the biggest and best events called burning man which brings in seventy million dollars of economic impact so I reached out to them. We did a lot of soul searching with entrepreneurs small businesses businesses. Those things that we really feel that make a difference in Reno and could diversify our culture. So it's been pretty amazing. You know we really can provide a lot of qualities that you know other cities can't and also it's a great environment for companies to be able to grow and and expand here. Let's talk a little rough because not just about like the big Kahuna that they got about fifteen miles west of you. The Tesla Panasonic Battery Factory. That's going to open and next year. There's the Big Apple Facility. There's that giant data facility the biggest one in the world but me you got fourteen thousand eight eight hundred more jobs year over year in that region. I mean that is dramatic you must have done something about fostering and entrepreneurial what we call it ecosystem absolutely and. I think that that's critical. You really want to have that mentality of yes and a culture of yes and how do we get out there. And I think that that's really made a difference by opening up the doors to city hall and also bringing in residence and saying what do you WanNa see in your city. We surely there must be some local tensions though because although your rents are cheap compared to northern California southern California. They're going up. Because of the new businesses moving in law supply and demand and some people are going to find the rising rents a hardship. Sure I think you make make a great point you know. Every city is struggling with affordable housing and mental health issues and addiction issues. And those are all things. Is that cities that are certainly on the rise. have to deal with Because as you know you know housing doesn't pop up overnight and we've reached out to developers and said hey this is the time to build build now because we need housing now and remember in the recession. Many of those developers Were wiped out. Many of them went bankrupt. And we hope that initiative where we put some of those fees those development and building fees on the back end that. They don't have to go allow embargo as much money. So we're constantly working on different ways. that we can solve those issues that you know. They're very complex issues and that's just one little tool Hillary Chevy mayor of Reno Nevada. Thank you so much.

"Is in Reno Nevada welcome that I've Ramsey show. Justin, your question for Ken Coleman. Hey, how you doing and doing this afternoon Good. you? Are you? I'm I am twenty one years old. Just finished getting my master's degree in music education. Getting married in the end of August and. I currently work at my church on the worship leader and the office secretary. And I've been authored that job to be the full time youth director here for about thirty six thousand a year at the same time, I was offered a job down in Los Angeles to be the sound campus tech director, much bigger church in Los Angeles for about fifty five thousand a year that comes with the stress of moving the high expensive living down there from a bit confused, especially at this time before getting married trying to be able to take care of my family, what decisions need to make. The first question is, what is it that you all to wanna do you got a master's in music education? Do you wanna use that masters? I'm pretty heavily involved in music, but I think getting through my schooling I don't want really want to be in that decay shin systems. Thanks. We have blessed I got a full ride scholarships. I'm not in any that I don't say for degree but let's, let's go five to seven ten years now. What is it that you would love to be doing in ministry name? It. I would love to be worship pastor. I've been looking to get into seminary classes. So the first thing I want you to look at is which one of these two offers that you have before you stay in your current location, but it's a different role, but you're in youth, you know, so you're paying your dues I'm fine with that. But if you take this other gig in Los Angeles, you're still not necessarily in the music department, you kind of in the programming area, which one of those get you further down the road towards where you wanna be. Right. I see that, that the tech directors is more involved in the music ministry. I guess that, that job. My biggest concern is definitely. Yeah. Just, you know, being able to afford living down there moving away from my current church and family. But it is it is more related to when I would like to be doing long-term, but have you, you. So you have a fear of cost of living that you're not going to be able to afford to live there. That's your big fear. Yes or no? Yeah. Mostly well. So we need to address that. So have you actually done the real research and see? Okay, where I'm going to be, let's take twenty thirty minute radius. You get to choose. But where could you live in that area and serve in that church and have a good quality of life as far as commute? And let's see what's actually out there based on a fifty five thousand dollar job and your budget. You don't have any debt you got a wife or you're going to have a wife, she could work if I if you guys choose do. So now you've got double income. I just think you've built this thing up to be bigger than it is certainly without the research to verify the fear just. Check that out. Does your wife work or your wife to be? She does work. She is hoping to not have to work fulltime, and I kind of support that we're trying to transition to, I can get bigger fuller time career so that when we eventually have kids, a fuse down the road. She could be a stay at home mother on fulltime. There's no kids. You don't have to practice being a stay at home mother, when there's no kids right you can quit later. That's right, and help and help them 'cause some cover some of this stuff. So here's what I think I heard, and you tell me if I'm wrong. Okay. I think you like your comfort zone. And I'm about to kick your butt out of it. Okay. Really comfortable and you're about to settle in there and make nothing and not go live your dream to spread your wings. It's scary to go live your dream, but you're not mayor is getting stuck in mediocrity because of a comfort zone. That's right. And you're looking for all the cost of livings, too high. So I get to stay where I'm at. And that sounds like the smart decision. We talk ourselves into these things all the time, the most thrilling ride,.

"Yeah. How are you? Doing. Well. How are you doing hanging? Good. So yeah, I'm from Reno Nevada and the sport right now that reigns. Supreme is college basketball. We got the number six ranked team in the nation and they're selling out pretty much every game. It's a tough ticket to get. Can they make a run to the final four? They definitely can we made the Sweet Sixteen last year. Yup. And lost to loyal. We played loyal this year and beat them by fifteen or twenty nice there. We've got a team full seniors. And I believe are starting lineup average age is older than the Phoenix Suns. Yeah. That's all right. Hey, there are certain universities that are going to get. Mcdonald's all Americans that you know, they're coming to school for a year, and they're going to be going to the NBA. And yes, you've got the talent to win it. But there are other universities that are going to keep guys off for years or longer depending on what the players wanna do. And they're just good with being great college basketball players, even if they are not future. NBA stars doesn't matter. You get the big dance. Take advantage of that. Older generation that you've got playing for you. Exactly, yes. In our coach. He's pretty much a gardener city right now. Eric musselman's of. Long as we keep him. I think we'll be able to keep this success that we're having and he's kind of like some of your players in as coach at a higher level. But he's happy. What he's doing right now knows the kind of program he is knows the kind of kids he's going to be able to get any just doing his job, which is winning on that level. And yet Nevada's going to be going deep into the NCAA tournament was if they can make a final four run this year, you're down for college basketball in Reno. Bob from port St. Lucie, Florida is on CBS sports radio. Bob. Hey, jodie. How you doing very good? Okay. Because I'm in portrait Lucy. You would think. The baseball would be number one with the Mets training here. However, the NFL is definitely number one. No doubt. And you've got. People rooting for every team in the NFL here, not not overly dolphin populated. It's what you tell. No, not really that. There are a few dolphin fans. But it's mostly transplant from everywhere, and they might be dolphin fans unless they're playing Majette. So unless they're playing the Steelers or whoever now, I tell you for that, I'm not trying to change your mind. I'm just asking your question because we've had a couple of individuals from other states say, you know, what high school football is king and we had to from taxes and one from Ohio. I know that Florida is also a huge high school football state is porn Saint Lucy. One of those areas, we do have high school football. As a matter of fact, the station that carries your show carries high school game, really. But yeah. But I would still say the NFL is is that I trust you. And I believe you, and I wasn't trying to talk you often. I just I had all that may Florida calls today. And I was thinking if I got high school football for Texas and Ohio. I might get one from Florida as well. Different areas of the state of Florida have different populations are certain areas are as he noted transplant areas. People lived other places and moved to Florida at a certain age for retirement savings. Basically, what it comes down to ease of life sake was what I was going to say, and there are other areas where people have been Floridians for generations. And I tend to think the old home Florida areas are the ones that are bigger highschool popularity driven because. Yeah, that they they went to high school. And now the kids go to school, maybe the grandkids, maybe grandpa and grandma are in the Friday night lights stands to watch their grandkids play too. When you have a transplant area, you get much less than that. So it depends on Larry Florida. You're talking about. Steve from South Carolina's up on CBS sports radio. He stayed. How you doing Terry? This is a great conversation. Great topic. Like, you're more frequently and I think you're pregnant a lot of callers, I'm in upstate South Carolina, Greenville, Spartanburg area. I would like to comment upon that area. It licking up into Asheville in western North Carolina down here. College football, obviously is king. It always has been always will be wild. You leak was on last night. We were watching Duke versus Virginia college basketball, right? Which is very very prominent the game was a game was almost over by the time the football game started because the game was on the af game came on at eight right now. NFL's not important around your at all I understand NFL had some sort of big ball game last weekend. So by told me this. All day. NBA is irrelevant down here. I think they're commissioners some guy they LeBron. But let me say this to you as a big Braves fan as as a as an Lanta native, my wife, and I watch every inning of every game the Braves played last year if they're competing. I'm tuned in. So that's just how it works around here. South Carolina, little baseball, mostly college football. Don't be don't be bothering us with that football thing National Football League, and the NBA you can't even spell. That's right. Can't spell it. Here's Steve good perspective. Thanks for jacket in. Well. I can tell you one thing. Have to do last bagman. We're gonna come back. I'm going to keep the phones Alpin, our friend. Jerry palm, just in case you're wondering if we bagged us or not major flying trouble. He was on a plane. And that's why we saved them prior fine. Larry said, I should be off the plane by final hour show. Jodi, we can do it then. And no he's made major travel issues and he's still in the air or waiting touchdown. They're circling as done looked like going to be able to punch Jerry up. We'll get him up next weekend. When we get that much closer to March madness blunting, I learned the Jody McDonald show is doing well in South Carolina. I got more South Carolina calls almost than all other states combined. I think it's probably a bad ten ten to eight at eighteen individuals who checked in eight them been from South Carolina and arrested country. A slight neither at ten cards. So all you, south Carolinians. I appreciate the support. I appreciate you tuning in. I appreciate the picking up the phone and dialing now. What the hell's wrong with the rest of the forty nine states. You gotta half an hour to catch up eight five five two one two four two two seven. "Sound our best. John thanks for being with us in Reno Nevada. Haya john. Thank you. Appreciate you taking my call, sir. We guard to Michael Flynn. He only lasted twenty four days -solutely came and testified that he has lied to the FBI and the lie was daddy ad met with the Russians and he had met with that. So Jay Kislyak the back over thirty times. Sanctions we spoke with him about sanctions and said go responding to Obama sanctions. And then he'd lied and said he talked about it. But the Russians knew he lied. So they had leverage over him. Exactly he had been compromised by the Russians in addition to that he organized or was about to organize a social black operation to kidnap this. Turkish Clark by the name of Golan tried to overthrow early one or two one says so Erta want says the toll the Golan says, I didn't try and overthrow anybody. Right. Flins involvement was that he accepted five hundred thousand dollars from the Turkish government to try to blame cleric back to Turkey for trial. I'm recalling Michael Flynn a hero. I mean, this guy is thirty as anybody else connected with Trump guy started right from the start being crooked. I call one question, John. I gotta jump in because one question. Rachel motto keeps asking I think she's got a great question is why are all these people lying about their contact with the Russians especially during the transition? We did they didn't have to lie. They could've told the truth Jonah, let let let me hold you over please. I know you've got an issue, and I've got time for you..
