Parasite's best picture triumph could begin a new era for the Oscars
"For the first time in the history of the Academy Awards a foreign language film has won the Oscar for Best Picture Paris only to south Korean black comedy also won Best Director for bone June hope in the main acting categories there were no real surprises with winds hawking Phoenix and Renee Zellweger but just how significant is parasites achievement just before we came on air I spoke to Tom brook in Hollywood it is seen as a pivotal moment perhaps in the academy's history it speaks to the growing power of international cinema and we have because of the economy has made in the last few years to diverse supply its membership to bring in more international film professionals and this could well be reflected in the results that we got tonight which was parasite winning the Best Picture Best Director best into international feature and best original screenplay yeah it was it was a dominant performance at perhaps a bit of a surprise but in terms of the the main acting Casseres I suppose the win as well the people we expect yes with the actors I mean I I should just back up for moments to say what was great about parasites it was announced that made for exciting viewing because with the acting categories it was very predictable Joaquin Phoenix one for his performance in the film joka Renee Zellweger one the playing Judy Garland and Judy Brad Pitt one for his role in once upon a time in Hollywood his supporting role and Laura Dern one for her supporting role in marriage story and does the fact that in a foreign language film won Best Picture it is that perhaps goes some way to to meet the complaints of those who said it wasn't a very diverse set of nominations perhaps but I I I think that our site was really well light to the piece of cinema it was very adventurous still making so I think it was voted full on those merits in a way and people really light phones you info here in Los Angeles as he was on the awards circuit in the run up to the office he has a very winning personality and so do members of his costs and I think that had a powerful effect on people as well so it may well let's waste some complaints about the lack of enterprise in diversity with the other nominees and briefly that was a bit of politics in in some of the acceptance speeches yes read it made a reference to the fact that John Bolton wasn't allowed to testify last week in the Senate impeachment hearings and Joaquin Phoenix made an impassioned political speech about human beings not exploiting one and all that indigenous people and the universe our correspondent Tom Burke took me from the red carpet outside the award ceremony in Los

"Which is I think sort of interesting mark of Scorsese's Christie's evolution well we also went to the Premier Night Party which is always a pretty splashy event? What was the We're getting from that hangover. not not the party or the brand or whatever because it's always a nice time but like. Kim Perry was the sponsor at the Party and they were only Campari cocktails and and beer and wine blake note nothing else and just like. That's just like you're asking for for for hangovers. Another season lasted into September this year yeah but no. I think that the party was fun. It's always like the kind of kick off to the season in New York right after it turns to fall and you know it's a nice mix of impress people and Industry people and you know various other folks and it was really fun to be at the Party this year where the movie that you know the opening night was such a big deal you now I think that's a real coup for New York. Film Festival which has in most recent years I think struggled a little bit with like getting the big world premieres. Here's the Irishman felt really exciting and you know I hope that also that the the sort of glare of that attention also shed some light on the other films that they've programmed which are yeah mostly replaced from other festivals but like really cool stuff like the motive our film like back around this great film from Brazil and actually have a little anecdote about that if I can share it with you around anecdote route so back when I saw that movie at can can I took to twitter afterward and it won't spoil anything about the movie because everyone should go see that movie unspoiled and I I wrote a really elegant tweet tweet which was back around more like back row. was supported. Brazilian film twitter founded because as we know Brazilians are I think among the most active on twitter and so they all kind of retweeted it and you know whatever that was in May so last night I went to a party for Kino Lorber this sort of Boutique TC distributor that puts out a lot of great foreign films and I met the filmmakers behind back around and I see I you know Rosa and a half in was like it's actually kind of funny. I tweeted tweeted about your movie and they were like Oh my God and they like got the producer of the film. This is the backer well God and she was like Oh. We talk about that all the time in the office. It's like taking out folks that like even your dumbest of tweets anyway so that's told us that like there are other great films at New York Film Festival and I hope that the Irishman you know all sorts of fanfare for that brought attention to these other great arguably smaller movies movies join Katy how much fantastic fest was just like the New York Film Festival. Oh yeah well. I don't know if you know this about me but I tweeted out a couple months ago. A parasite more like para nice very different animal for the New York Film Festival. I was was there for about nine days and I think the last movie was knives out and during the intro director Rian Johnson said something like by now your innards are shellacked lacked with when I was like Yep that's about right days is long time so long but yes so fantastic fest Austin in a great fun genre film festival that gets you know a few films sort of hop skip and a jump over there from tiff we got the the lighthouse. Dolemite Joe Rabbit knives out you know we should all just premiered and then like I feel like this will makers went directly to Austin onto screen there and that was really fun. It's fun to see a lot of those movies with like a really amped up Alamo draft house audience but foreign away lake back with all the offerings on the table for a lot of like really cool new filmmakers on this late parasite far and away everyone's favorite the best of all which I know we've been talking about since can but like cannot underestimate undersell how big at this particular festival and didn't even get like it didn't even get one of the big like nighttime primetime spots. It got like an earlier in the evening spot for some reason. I don't know why this complicated not have talent with it. What is that Notre Bungee. who was there like like the poor manages has been traveling the world he had like a plaque dedicated to him at the the draft was like it? Was this whole big cool thing but like he was there. He was doing a ton of press like he was really doing it. I don't know it's just like schedule. You know you know Jenga or whatever but it did not even get like one of the big like late ones but it was just the biggest thing that people are talking about you know and I you look at the festival that parasite is already his most popular international film like more than anything. He's like Snow Pierce or anything he's made and it's it's an incredible film and what's funny well. I don't know can I. I should I tough for this movie. They don't want us but I'm not just going to spoil anything. I'm just GONNA say. I thought the title was more liberal than it was. I just didn't like look into what parasite was about and since it was playing a genre film festival I like like actual bugs bugs. It's not it's only so I'll give you that. It's not very genre you know oh like none. The way that like the host is or like snow piercer like he's made much more sean right exactly and you know and and the first fantastic fest like burning played their last year like this is their interested in in global film as well as genre film but I just I for some reason I thought it was like more genre that it was I was delighted by and delighted to see the Shining Star of the festival so oh there you go parasite. Judah Rabbit was like it feels like a million years ago that I saw whole emmys happened since I thought that was the opening night film and that was interesting because it was so fresh off of its tiff win like you guys. It was like the same week yeah you guys had just recorded an episode. We'll go men that was like Josiah around our God now or whatever the title of that episode was so like those are the expectations crowding around the film and it landed really well but not Earth shatteringly well at the festival even though it's a very like tyco. Itt Friendly Festival people really liked it but they didn't. They weren't losing their minds over for it so I don't know I am genuinely curious to see what happens to judge a rabbit on the on the lungs award circuit after all all that but yeah in terms of like award season narrative I would just say like the parasite momentum continues to gather this great and it's not eligible for awards I believe I don't think it's coming until next year but eight hundred four picked up this saint MoD out of tiff. I think it was one of the midnight I heard some people talking about that tiff. Yeah Yeah and it screened here as a first time feature from a female director and it was really good and I you know I'm not like a horror person. What what was I festival. I saw him on. It's like it's like creepy. Lesbian Catholics like that's kind one of the best kind of horror I think and a great performance from Jennifer Ely and it's really really slow burn and really really good films. I'm excited for people to check that out and then the lighthouse is one of the surprise greetings and people really responded well to that not myself because I get seasick music and it just on a boat is Andre Lan. It's just a lot well no I. I really admire the film but there was just a lot of throbbing wave you've crashing that do not sit well with me and my case selected but so it should be a forty x thing where you're seeing moves along with the movie. Can you get like a sea spray and your face but I mean it's Bravo were a performances from Robert Pattinson and we'll defoe so that movie feels feels so perfect for Tinton. Fantastic's SORTA genre like a little bit but it's just so weird and it's so it really need you to get on board with it and it feels fantastic presses a place to do that. Yeah absolutely people were so so excited to talk about it because it's in this like different aspect ratio. It's black and white and Robert eggers is so the doctor is so he's one of those directors who can talk about a film and talk about all the deep cut references that he's using the film without sounding insufferable and I think that's incredible feats of speechifying. If you can like like give your deep cut references and not sound like your condescending in which is he just sounds enthustiastic and really smart so yeah. I'll be curious if if the the patents and heads the Twi hards a so called them that I mean how can we not but do they come out for patents sounds weird renna films I hope they do. I hope they see all of his weird films. Because what a joy yeah so it's fantastic fest. I mean I don't know if like I don't know how oh you guys are feeling about Jodi Rabbit Week and a half two weeks later. How much time is best for me it Richard. You've you've been surrounded by festival people for near Foam Festival like feeling judge. A rabbit still exists that SORTA I mean I don't know I I if someone someone on twitter. The other day was talking about will there joker but about how like especially this year like it feels like these all these movies have this. It's like steep ascent to high profile festivals and then just kind of drop off and you know it's the media's fault for not you know waiting to holding coverage until the movie's out and people can actually see it and so maybe Josiah rabbits suffering a little of that but I think it's kind of lying in wait you know I think that like we're passed the flurry of the festivals festivals and all that and so now it's just more like okay. Let's wait for this to come see how it does. I mean you know I think that an obvious example you you know in last year was green book. Where like came out of Nowhere One Toronto. I feel like it kind of lay dormant for a bit came out didn't do quite as well as maybe some people thought it would but like it ran the you know the sort of steady race from released to win and you know maybe Josiah will will be the same story. I think that maybe journalists have have sort of kind of assess that movie in written it off or or kind of put it on the shelf in but like that the by no means indicates that the movie has lost any momentum. I don't think so talking about the Irishman Dow feel like I feel like the season has lacked a narrative a little bit and like a lot of times he's near don't become clear for a while so I'm not saying that.

NYC studios podcast trump ink he says Donald Trump connections to Ukraine go way back you know so many parts of trump world intersect with Ukraine it's actually kind of crazy I think the most famous it would be Paul mana for Paul man a fort worth for Ukrainian strong man but Rudy Giuliani has been making trips to Ukraine for many years as well and president trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen also has Ukraine connections so I I've been interested in the country for for a while so in the latest episode of trump ink we kind of get the origin story to the relationship between the trump and Ukraine it starts as you say with Paul man a fort and the former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych when he was running you had a coverage was kind of the old docks candidate the oligarchs being the richest and most influential businessmen in the country and when he began a campaign most Ukrainians didn't support him you mentioned in your podcast that was meant for it who basically turn that around forty.

Can I say hell the film store? Sure. Kirk refunds out that. She's diagnosed with of the less Toma, and she has not a lot of time left to live and it's a day in her life. It's just and it's sort of reckoning she sort of ghost in her own life and. It's. You know, it's a story about loss and disappointment and forgiveness and. You know, an attempt to to right. Some wrongs and an a love and hate for the place you live, but you're still drawn to all of its promise on your own ideas of what your future should be. Well, put your wonderful. I absolutely love it theaters and onto this weekend. And that's a great segue instead of the muzzle today. You know, we know that all Jews and non Jews alike are looking for some direction and words of wisdom in the wake of what happened in Pittsburgh and rabbi climb bomb. I would just love to give you the floor to take us out of the week. Thank you so much, and it's such an honor to be here with both of you. I think first of all we all have to remember that people who feel targeted feel alone. There have been different groups of people in this country who've been feeling targeted and at our synagogue, CBS T, we started every single Friday right before Muslim prayer showing up with signs that say Jewish New Yorker stand with our Muslim neighbours we've been doing that for a couple of years now, and at first there was some fear and concern, and then everybody started to wanna take their selfie with us and send it to their mother in Pakistan or their sister in Afghanistan or their brother in Egypt to show that there are people who are standing out there and every single. Angle week were there. And then who did I hear from immediately? After the news broke about what happened in Pittsburgh where Muslim friends from this mosque. And then they organize themselves because they had developed such relationship with us that they said they had to be with us the Friday night after the killing to stand in front of our synagogue with signs that said Muslim New Yorkers love, our Jewish friends over one hundred stood in front of the synagogue with signs and with flowers to give out to the many many hundreds of congregants who came. Here's the story that we have to tell we have to reach across the narratives of hate that exist know, that we're all in this together, despair is not a strategy enjoy as an active spiritual resistance, we have to each find a way to be the reason that people believe in the goodness of another human being every day. We can do that in all different kinds of ways every single one of us. Well..

I remember those days with Billy crystal in that movie, she looked really really she did. And it's gone overboard. These people gone overboard here at Greenberg cosmetic surgery, we like very natural look, and when they're overdone they tend to look distorted looking so we can't do that. We have to do a natural look, and that's what we believe in when we do face, lift or injections or anything at Greenberg has pulled so tight. Like scared so tight, it looks really strange. I mean, I it just goes to show you you have to pick the right surgeon board certified plastic surgeon find someone who specializes in cosmetic surgery. "Well the only so there was a story that was circulating and i don't know if they're going to touch on this in that movie but currently renee zellweger is playing judy garland in a bio pic okay wigger pull it up she looks identical and everybody's freaking the fuck coutts i'm sure and it looks it looks great so they released the first trailer and everybody was psyched about it bbc's doing it for some reason and then it's going to come over here afterwards probably like netflix whatever it is everybody's freaking out at how renee zellweger looks like dental to her i know renee zellweger is a great singer so should be able to do that but one of the stories in there was you know that's the the little people the munchkins were sexually harassing her onset all of the time in like constantly putting their hands upper skirt and all this fucked up shit onset and there's been these people who were not petitioning arguing like why can't you talk to jerry merrin since he's the only surviving on left in ask him what really happened problem is he's in an old person's home and he's gone regular size people or is it all james that's what on on a cage with a bunch of old german shepherds but the pair them to german shepherd no no i'm just thought you know if you if everything's going to be the same fight you know the counters bathrooms and stuff might as well put them all together nuts.
