Yeah, No, I think that did you okay? Oh, yeah, Okay. She was great. Is Judy Garland? That's right anyway, but so exciting to see Renee Zellweger back with her old face. I thought that was really the best part of the night. All right. So now that that's enough of the of the Oscars what's up? What's on the agenda now? What's coming up? Oh, God, nothing is good is anything that we talked about? What way have the Oscars to talk about it last week? Yeah. This week. We have sonic the hedgehog, and it's sonic the head. All right. I will never be mentioned in the same sentence. It really I don't know. There are a lot of people who like sunken head drug I I hated it more than anything else. I just I find Sonic to be an extremely annoying character. So the idea is that he is the head hog from outer.

"For the first time in the history of the Academy Awards a foreign language film has won the Oscar for Best Picture Paris only to south Korean black comedy also won Best Director for bone June hope in the main acting categories there were no real surprises with winds hawking Phoenix and Renee Zellweger but just how significant is parasites achievement just before we came on air I spoke to Tom brook in Hollywood it is seen as a pivotal moment perhaps in the academy's history it speaks to the growing power of international cinema and we have because of the economy has made in the last few years to diverse supply its membership to bring in more international film professionals and this could well be reflected in the results that we got tonight which was parasite winning the Best Picture Best Director best into international feature and best original screenplay yeah it was it was a dominant performance at perhaps a bit of a surprise but in terms of the the main acting Casseres I suppose the win as well the people we expect yes with the actors I mean I I should just back up for moments to say what was great about parasites it was announced that made for exciting viewing because with the acting categories it was very predictable Joaquin Phoenix one for his performance in the film joka Renee Zellweger one the playing Judy Garland and Judy Brad Pitt one for his role in once upon a time in Hollywood his supporting role and Laura Dern one for her supporting role in marriage story and does the fact that in a foreign language film won Best Picture it is that perhaps goes some way to to meet the complaints of those who said it wasn't a very diverse set of nominations perhaps but I I I think that our site was really well light to the piece of cinema it was very adventurous still making so I think it was voted full on those merits in a way and people really light phones you info here in Los Angeles as he was on the awards circuit in the run up to the office he has a very winning personality and so do members of his costs and I think that had a powerful effect on people as well so it may well let's waste some complaints about the lack of enterprise in diversity with the other nominees and briefly that was a bit of politics in in some of the acceptance speeches yes read it made a reference to the fact that John Bolton wasn't allowed to testify last week in the Senate impeachment hearings and Joaquin Phoenix made an impassioned political speech about human beings not exploiting one and all that indigenous people and the universe our correspondent Tom Burke took me from the red carpet outside the award ceremony in Los

The Frame Oscar Special

"Are ready. Let's do it. Welcome to the frame Oscar special from KPCC in Los Angeles. Welcome to the one million breath and the Oscar goes to and the Oscar goes to and the Oscar goes to get anybody. I'M GONNA find you're GONNA give you. Massive snow snowed. Everybody who bought a ticket told somebody to buy a ticket. Thank you I love you if I may be so honored to have all all the female nominees and every category stand with me in this room tonight the actors Maryland you do it everybody else will come on all right all right all right. I'm John Horn host to the frame and joining me is Jacqueline coli editor at Ron Tomatoes Jacqueline. Thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me John so I know we're only a couple seconds in certified fresh so far. I think you're doing great. You're certified fresh and honestly I would say all the best picture nominees are also pretty awesome. It's probably the highest average on the tomato meter of best picture nominees. We've had in a while so I'm excited to talk about these phones. So let's start with probably the top story. I think of this year's Oscar race twenty acting nominees. One person of Color Cynthia Revo who stars as Surrey Tubman and Harriet. Yeah I'M NOT GONNA lie was extremely disappointed. When I watched each array and John Show read out the nominees few weeks ago? But I wasn't surprised actually just wrote an an article rotten tomatoes discussing this when you talk about the ninety two years of the history of the academy. There's only been thirty. Five Black Women nominated and twenty one of them have been for playing a slave a maid or woman in abject poverty it is an alarming and slightly depressing trend. I would say in the academy's Tastes And when you have performances from Octavia. CBS Spencer and loose Alfre woodard clemency. Jaylo in four inch heels giving us all she could for Hustler's and Aquafina further for well. It's really really alarming for you to say to yourself that this is where we are at the state of the academy. I'm going to hope that this year. We can have parasite as a moment if it wins. Best picture that we can say. We're moving forward. But again Cynthia being the only nominee it's It's a bit depressing parasite. I think has a legitimate chance to win the best picture. Oscar Oscar Think Bong Jun ho who directed and Co wrote. It could win director as well if it wins. The top prize the first foreign language movie in Academy History to take that prize. That is important in its own right regardless of the fact that none of its actors were nominated for performing in it. Yeah and it's also again a trend unfortunately with the academy there have been six previous best picture. Nominations from Asian cinema where none of the actors were honored with an acting nomination and unfortunately parasite kept with that trend this year here however We keep a track at our wars leaderboard and rotten tomatoes dot com of all of the winds of all of the films that are in the conversation and parasite has dominated with over a hundred in twenty five wins and to give you sort of a relative idea. The next winds is at seventy one. So parasite has been dominating with critics groups and with these these various guilds so it's poised to maybe take home the top prize but it really depends on the academy's taste and what those nine thousand members feel about the film later in the show. We're GONNA talk talk about the best picture race. We're also going to hear from some of the directors of some of the best picture nominees including Greta. Gerwig made little women was not nominated for best director. Sam Mendes from one thousand nine hundred seventeen and Bon John Hoult from parasite. But we'll start this Oscar party with some leading actresses three of the five nominees in this category had add the particular challenge of playing real people on Screen Cynthia Rio sharply staring and Renee Zellweger. Who Plays Judy Garland in Judy Yukon? There's an audience other ways. It hears you sing my mouth driving. It was judy takes place in the late. One thousand nine hundred sixty judy. Garland's career is floundering. She's struggling with sobriety. She goes to England perform at a London nightclub and Joplin one thing that surprised me. was that renee. Zellweger wasn't convinced that she could actually pull off as part. I wish I think is so crazy. That's Texas girls for you as a Texas girl I can say we're like deprecating on our talent and always like underestimate ourselves but she absolutely murdered murdered this role I remember. I woke up right in early at the tyrod film festival to watch. Her sort of embody. Judy Garland for this role and it was so I would say mesmerizing.

"That was Renee Zellweger nominated for her work in Judy you're listening to the frame Oscar special I'm John horn hosted the frame on KPCC in Los Angeles and I'm here with Jacqueline Coley editor and plot let's now turn to Charlize there in bomb shell which he also produced out there and plays former fox news anchor Megan Kelly who partners with other women at that network to take down the founder Roger ailes sick retelling women go on speak up for yourself just know the entire network is with Roger no one will believe you the call you a liar knows your career you want assignments and air time go ahead hold the paranoid man inside your salary a pervert and do that on a non is hot line he controls on the phone has a contractual right to record these as Christ you think women are idiots honestly I was completely mesmerized by bomb shell I was actually one of the biggest fans of the movie it was kind of a bit critically divisive I think not a lot of people liked giving some humanity to Megan Kelly but I personally found Charlize performance to be incredible and just the kind of hate to say it but the balls it took for her to take on that role to produce it herself and to say that she wanted to tell this need to story I did talk with Charlize Theron and she told me why she wanted to make the film and why it was important to make it now the script was written three times op pre Harvey Weinstein there wasn't any of what is out there right now in our in our culture as far as this conversation it's vied felt somewhat like a story in its own silo but but people were definitely kind of whispering about a lot of what was about to come out and so you could feel that you could feel there was like this kind of like under I think this bubbling that was happening in the pot was about to boil over we definitely felt that and so when we read the script we were we're a little bit of let me believe me nobody could predict how big all of this would be but we were aware that there were something timely about the script how would you describe what this movie is about it's a movie about a group of very unlikely women who if you were you know writing a fictional story you would not necessarily cast as your central characters to tell a story of taking down the biggest media mogul and yet they did why were they on likely do thank well because I think a lot of them you know Gretchen and and Megan had made some comments prior to all of this about sexual harassment that I found not necessarily helpful to the cause of a lot of you know women who are experiencing sexual harassment I think there there is a of a conservative view on sexual harassment is how do you believe women how do you know what's true how the emphasis is always on doubting the victim doubting the woman and I just thought it was interesting that they had had those views before in the past about sexual harassment but Megan Kelly famously refuses to be called a feminist you know they are someone then most unlikely feminist that you will find.

Oscars 2020: who will have the biggest night?

"Are the Oscars are this weekend who are you rooting for anybody on your list I like once upon a time in Hollywood I just thought that was a great film I love the cast awesome stuff several nominations for that film bills worker is joining us now long time energy reporter for the sun times still with five Chicago is a contributor and bill has followed many many many Oscars lot but you know I always loved about you bill you you follow the local entertainment scene so well and always told us such interesting nuggets about what was going on here well that's true I've always loved you know I mean I think that's important I think it as we all know how they moved in this world of of the current the twenty first century media I think local local local is the way to cope in general because I think that's what people really want to get because they can get you know the national stories from other outlets but but this is an interesting year at all well it's always interesting with the Academy Awards although I do think in certain categories is here there's there's some things that are pretty well said but I know we think of course they're going to go again this year without it without a without a whole list which I don't think it's a terrible thing I think you know well I'll tell you why I think so often unless you get somebody like Billy crystal who's always knocks the you know the ball out of the park I think over the years I think will be colder did a good job we recently had our critic's guide Bible to the critics choice awards which of the broadcast broadcast critics and you know we had two days he did a wonderful job and I think because he didn't try to overdo it you know came out was charming and didn't you know try to be too cute but I think sometimes I think people want to see who's going to win they want to see the presenters I don't think they want a lot of big production numbers and all those give me some wonderful musical numbers at the Oscars you know your health Elton John performing in and you know it's gonna be really quite quite wonderful in the court system the result of a few people who really are talented musically but it's gonna be interesting to see what happens on Sunday I can say I disagree too but I'd like the host I guess you're right but what okay what is a good host was a good house because right some of the host I kind of remember the Anne Hathaway that was a disaster and as much as I loved you know but she yeah I do too but she what that wasn't right for her at all and James Franco I think the the combo wasn't right and that yeah then they tried to do so many acts that an already long ceremony got longer and longer right letterman was not successful either you know so I mean and and I love him but I mean I just it's just a very tough job I will say that so I think sometimes a safe way to go is with out the host and we'll see how it goes David Letterman wasn't wanted the Oprah uma uma Oprah right rumors were rolling their eyes he's like I got to go and I got a key thing is we we didn't work we actually have some audio here from Billy crystal because he was just on Jimmy Kimmel okay crystal has hosted the Oscars I think nine times total nine times jingle himself is hosted the Oscars twice yes yeah he did a good job he did so the two of them had thoughts about the hostess Oscars here's here's what they had to say I always loved being out there I I loved the guess the trusts you know that the movie academy had a made to to get me out that I always I felt like there was a great honor to do it and I think that when you have a show that's as long as it is is going to happen and I think the problem with the no hosting perhaps is that there's not somebody out there to capitalize on that moment ledge view had when the wrong Best Picture right who could forget that the one that's right but he does make a good point there he does make a good point that you can can bring it into the moment and and capitalize on it that is a very good point I hadn't thought of that someone says something that you can sort of have fun with right that just sort of right out there and then they bring it back and make everybody sort of laugher connect over that moment we just had a listener say six three oh what about the la la land fiasco that would be weird without a host because sort of look at each other like what that would that would have been terrible and and then on a lighter note I mean it's great when you have somebody you know when when Jack Palance remember that the one arm push up you know on the sages many years ago and of course and you know Billy came out and made a great joke about it because you know those are the things that you love love to see happen yeah my favorite also I think was on my list of favorites I should say Ellen DeGeneres remember that a normal than the selfie she took and then when she was busting Steven Spielberg around a telephone tell take the picture you know when I could change my point of view you're either going to go maybe on your side your honor but you know I heard you it coming in when you talk about once upon a time in Hollywood that really was one of my favorite favorite movies of the year I see like bill if this one is sort of got a little bit of an unfair advantage because it seems like one of those movies that people in the industry natural sort of are drawn to because it has history of historical factor I know it's sort of a bag I would love to see it with but it's it's one of my favorite but I think all of the momentum seems to be from the directors guild of the producers guild all of the different wards have been happened sounds like it's going to be nineteen seventeen which I liked very much but technically it had some incredible you know incredible beautiful moments but my favorite if I was going to pick one it would be once upon a time in Hollywood or parasite which of course is going to win trust me it's gonna win best foreign film the people that are further further Oscar parties if they want to fill out there if you get if you get some of those lesser known categories right you can win the Oscar Poole I've no I bet it's true that's a good strategy that's true yes I have eight one five Oscars praying for no politics I need a break yeah what do you think we all do I think we all do and I think that will be that's one thing that I hope we do have because I think after what we've all gone through in this country in the last few weeks I think yes no politics is a very good suggestion but it's interesting because in terms of all the acting categories I think they're pretty well locked into a whole I think it is going to win and I think most people do what do you think what you got for best supporting actress I think well that's what the one category where there could be a surprise in the usually is a surprise the one category excuse me would be best supporting actress because even though most people think it's gonna be Laura Dern was terrific as a divorce lawyer in marriage story you know who could possibly slip in there because he has won a few things as far as people from little women who played one of the daughters and that's one category but I do think it's gonna be Laura Dern for best Supporting Actor it's Brad Pitt as one everything is beloved by many people in Hollywood you know it's sort of his his year in his time and I think that's a pretty much of a lock in for Best Actress it's it's I think pretty much going to be Renee Zellweger for Judy plank Judy Garland and although I would look I would be disappointed if there was a real real upset here in Jersey ronin from little women one because I think she's terrific but they're all these categories have great nominees and of course for Best Actor again it's probably going to be Joaquin Phoenix because again he won everything so far incredible performance I didn't see G. R. A. Renee Zellweger in Judy but I didn't know that that was not universally loved by critics no it was not what happened there was everybody pretty much loved her I mean I agree with this the movie itself was just sort of you know just so so I think the reason she's basically the nominee the only nominee for that movie there may be a cost and it might be a minor on the minor categories I shouldn't call minor but one of the most popular categories but the movie itself was not great she was what made the movie yeah I you know I I didn't see that because of sort of the reviews the main one that would be worth revisiting because I loved her and that was the online series where she was the rich woman who is trying to convince people a little comes of age is he was a recent series streaming and she was phenomenal and I just remember and she sings herself I mean the fact that she you know somebody's like a voice like garland which everybody knows so well the fact that you do your own singing I think is also a major push any and there's so many scenes in this movie you look and you think it's actually Judy Garland on stage and screen excuse me so I think it's and that's pretty much of a lock but there again you know you never that's pictures that that was one I mean I think it's probably going to be nineteen seventeen but I would be happy with virtually any of those you know that are up there there's nine nominees you know because they changed the rules a few years ago but you know a lot of talk this year the parasite which definitely is gonna win best foreign film it might be the first year that the best foreign film also wins Best Picture that would be somewhat of an upset but that would be a fascinating thing to see what is the Netflix series that Renee Zellweger was and I was trying to remember to remember bill out we only have a minute here but if you if you are going to the movies this weekend as I know some people do when they try to say Hey I'm gonna catch up on some of these Oscar nominated films what what was one of the films you would suggest the probably not many people have gone to I think I don't know I think first of all I think you know probably nineteen seventeen I think it's it's a kind of a tough movie to watch many ways but I think that that that seems to be the front runner for Best Picture if you haven't seen once upon a time in Hollywood definitely catch that and I'll tell you a parasite is be the third one because that is such it's got a real twist to it I can't tell you much and I would give it away but it that would be the film that is probably the one most unique dark comedy that come down the pike in a long time okay you got my attention on that I'm gonna check that one out bills record thank you so much for checking in with us at any time good to hear your voice same

Oscars 2020 Preview

"HI everybody. It's Peter Travers. Here here with this special edition of Popcorn which we're calling the Oscar popcorn because this weekend on February ninth exactly everybody will be watching. Being the Oscar telecast on ABC and probably having their own little ballot. Like I have here trying to figure out who's going to win this damn thing and if the person I don't like winds pushed I put my money on. That's what really happens. That's what people ask me on the street. So I'm GonNa take you through these main categories and and we'll see what will win what should win and we can argue. You can find me somewhere and we can argue about it. But I'm going to start with with best supporting actress. Because that's how the Academy Awards those that's always the first award that we say Kathy Bates in Richard Jewel. Laura dern in marriage in story Scarlett Johansson in Joe Rabbit Florence Pew in Little Women and Margot Robbie in bombshell so look. There's it's a lot of good people here and I have to say right at the outset. That Scarlett Johansson is one of those rare actors that has a nomination as best actress. Chris and best supporting actress marriage story for Best Actress in here supporting which usually gets you to win one and that usually that it's usually that one but it's it's not going to happen you know I'm sitting here saying did I read wrong. What happened to Jennifer Lopez and hustlers? Hasn't she been in this game since the release Lisa Hustler she has and yet the academy you bad people have decided that J.. Lo just wasn't Oscar material while you're wrong but look we we have to deal with rats here and I'm going to say that the person who will win in this category is also the person who should win. And that is Laura Burn and Laura dern in marriage story plays a divorce lawyer and she's a tough one and let's think of all the Hollywood people that are voting for this award and how every single one of them I'll wager. A BET has their own divorce lawyer and has been through this process. Maybe more than once. Maybe two we're three times to do it. And they find Laura Dern Dunn's in this movie something spectacular it's also one of the few awards. I think that marriage story story is going to win. But Laura Dern has never won an Oscar. This will be her first time. Everyone loves her. We all love and big little lies and I think this is her time on so let her have it all right. I'm moving onto best supporting actor. Tom Hanks in a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Anthony Hopkins in the two popes Al Al Pacino in the Irishman Joe Pesci in the Irishman and Brad Pitt in once upon a time in Hollywood. Look you're talking to a big Irishman fan here so if it was me saying come up for the gold it would be Joe. Patchy I know Joe Pesci doesn't do any publicity. He basically sticks fix to himself. He's probably tough guy in real life as the gangster that he plays in the Irishman but that performance is amazing and won won his first Oscar for another score says he movie goodfellas where he was the most scary gangster. You can see here. He's kind of quiet dawn. So if I'm I'm giving them it would be Joe Patchy but the academy is giving this award and no one. No one can win. This except Brad Pitt. These other people here Tom Hanks Anthony Hopkins Al Pacino and Peci all have won Oscars so they already have the gold. Do you realize his full career. Brad Brad Pitt has never won an academy award game over people. This is it Brad. You're going to get in once upon a time in Hollywood playing a stuntman. It man playing somebody who's been around the business. I think it's irresistible for Hollywood to say I'm going to reject one of my own. Plus he was great in the movie. You seem to hear my voice that I have a little bit of a problem. Yeah I do. Because that's not a supporting performance at all that his part is the equal who of his Co Star Leonardo DiCaprio's WHO's nominated for best actor. So why is he in that category. I think they want to win. And Brad you might as well prepare repair your speech right now okay. I am now moving onto best actress. Cynthia Haribo in Harriet Scarlett Johansson in marriage story. Sir Sharon in little women. Charlie's Sharon in bombshell and Renee Zellweger in Judy. What Best S. actress award so far from the Golden Globes to the critics choice awards has it Renee Zellweger one? She's won all of them. So is there any possibility ability here for something else. I mean. Look what Charlie. Stern did in bombshell. She not only plays Megan Kelly. The makeup geniuses have made her look exactly exactly like her and Charlie's has talked exactly like are they love bio pics there so she should be really strong. Social Ronin is like twenty five years old. She's he's on her fourth Oscar nomination. This is incredible and Scarlett Johansson. Like I said nominated for best. Supporting actress and Best Actress. Cynthia revolt is playing Harry Tubman and she also wrote the song from the movie which is nominated. That happened to somebody last year. Didn't it yes it was lady. Eating Gaga Lady Gaga was nominated for writing that wonderful song from stars born and his best actress. But what did you win. She won best song and that was it so I have to say that again. I would give this award person late to search for Ronin just because I think to be that young and to be that consistently brilliant is amazing and her performance in little women. Is that good. But it's Rene as I talk about. How Hollywood would love bio-pics this is? Judy Garland that she's playing judy. This is one of their own. Did they ever give. Judy Garland her own Oscar Competitive Competitive Acting Oscar. Never and I think for that reason not only will renee Zellweger win best actress but she will win for Oscar. Judy Garland on never had. It's their way of saying Judy. We love you. We were so stupid not to give it to you. And we're going to give it to Rene in honor of you. This is how Hollywood works. It's really crazy. But if you're betting on this you have to bet crazy. Aright best actor Antonio Banderas in pain and gory. Leonardo di Caprio in once upon a time in Hollywood Adam driver in marriage story what came Phoenix and joker and Jonathan Pryce in the two popes. I look at this category and before I get into. Who Will Win and who should win? I've I've got to say academy what you have against Comedians. And what do you have against Eddie Murphy. That he's not nominated for Dole. Might as my name what you have against Adam Sandler who proved his dramatic chops in uncut gems. Like nobody can believe and yet they have it they only like to give Oscars to actors serious actors who played comic roles. Ause they hate anybody who's making a living as a comic to actually win this war so this year's been going along I've had this feeling that this was Adam drivers to lose that performance in marriage story is one of the best things he's ever done or that I've seen this year and yet there's this other guy and who's that other guy he's Joaquin Phoenix plane joker. Sometimes there's that kind of performance sometimes. There's there's one that just so dominates the screen. That is such an act of immersion of from an actor in a raw. Yeah Joaquin was scary. He was sometimes funny. He was always touching even though he's playing somebody who's totally out of his mind and a lot of this movie his in his mind. What Cain has been nominated several times before and never one Joaquin? This is yours. I can't believe any set of circumstances. Stances if you WANNA bet the whole house on something and somebody to win it's going to be Joaquin Phoenix as best actor for joker game over all right. We're ready now to move on. I'm going to best director now. This is one of the most exciting categories because these people will these particular men and save and because Hollywood as wont of decided that even though there were more women directing movies than ever before four last year. They couldn't find any to nominate which is of course absurd because Greta Gerwig directed little women which is nominated as best picture and they. I thought no I'm just GONNA do five men like we always do what happened. You people sort of learned a couple of years ago when you nominated Greta. GERWIG quick for Ladybird didn't give it to her. But you nominated her. The KADEMI is ninety two years old. Now how many women has given an academy award for directing one. And that's Kathryn Bigelow for hurt locker. Ninety two years one award hang your head in shame name anyway not knocking any of these men that did get nominated. But there's one in there that I would sacrifice for Greta Gerwig but you you try to guess who that is anyway. Here they are. Martin Scorsese the Irishman Todd Phillips. For Joker Sam Mendes for nine thousand nine hundred Seventeen Quentin Tarantino eighteen. O for once upon a time in Hollywood and Bung June hope for parasite every one of these guys you can make a case for. Martin Scorsese Z.. To me is a master the grandmaster who only has one Oscar for directing and then the Irishman is doing some of his best work. Ever Quentin Tarantino. Not No with once upon a time in Hollywood is also a peak form and yet I'm saying this category is going to between two other the directors one of them being the South Korean Vong June Hall for parasite a Foreign Language Film. That seems to have got everybody excited about what's possible and then Sam Mendes for nine hundred seventeen a world war one movie that is constructed to look like it was done in in one continuous. Take how do you resist that. You don't even though I think they would really like to give their best director award worked. Bon John. How it's going to be for Sam Mendes for creating a war movie like no war movie we've ever seen before so sam I think think it's yours but if you're getting out there and you WanNa go to Bung Jun Ho? You know you might do it because there's always a surprise in these contests we can't go. Oh by what the odds are we have to go by sometimes the academy saying I have an instinct for this. I have a feeling this is the right way to go all right last category. Are we ready best picture of the year Ford versus Ferrari the Irishman Joe. Joe Rabbit Joker her little women marriage story nineteen seventeen once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite here is is the one you know every year I do this. It's between one or two movies this year. I can't reduce anything to to the Irishman my estimation a classic one for the ages. Martin Scorsese. Ed Is Best Robert De Niro Pacino. Joe Patchy making a mob movie about old-age age about the end of a mobster. This is the punishment that they get for the lives they live. There's nobody in their lives there alone. It's a tragedy Quentin went and Tarintino. Once upon a time in Hollywood is writing about Hollywood in the sixties and about a time that he thought was the last creative burst of Hollywood Hollywood and doing that. Nineteen seventeen again the World War One movie shot to make it look like. It's one continue steak and parasite a movie about a Korean Rian family in which they exploited the people they work for and then are exploited by the people working for them it is a classic. These are four incredible classics. So what am I gonNA do. What am I going to tell you? What's out there that you have to say? This is the winner and I'm going to go with with all excuses. No excuses in fact to my love for the Irishman. But I think this is the year of Quentin Tarantino. I I think once upon a time in Hollywood being a love letter to Hollywood and being voted on by people who live and work in Hollywood Quentin Tarantino despite right brilliant work with pulp fiction inglorious bastards reservoir dogs Django unchained has never won a Best Picture Oscar or a best director Oscar. Never it's never happened. What better time than now? When he saying Hollywood I love you? I think it's time Hollywood to say to Quentin Tarantino. I love you back back. So you've got it watch the show and afterwards we'll have a discussion.

Oscar Picks of Wesley Morris from The New York Times

"Wesley Morris is here. Sometimes we fly him out. And we just put you on a whole bunch of podcasts. And we just wind you up and you go yeah Ping Pong Pinball pinball Wesley Yeah Oscars this this weekend yes I can never get through Oscars week without talking to you for at least ten minutes on what's going on. I'm not sure what happened to the Oscars because we have all these prohibitive favorites. There's no drama at all. Everyone thinks nineteen seventeen gonNA win. Isn't that wild. Everyone thinks Phoenix is GonNa win for the joker. Okay yeah that Renee Zellweger is GonNa win for Judy. which I five saying? No no no it made money Brad Pitt for once upon a time And then Laura dern for marriage story yes and those are Kinda done y- everyone the the. They're like huge huge favorites. It doesn't even make sense to bet on them. They're such huge favorites. You'd be like betting on. I don't know the the though Oklahoma City Thunder to beat some division. Three Kinda odd you the only one. That's kind of even best director. Sam Mendes as twenty five favorite. That's what is happening. Is it just. The Internet has made this that the consensus the census of thought now nobody goes against the grain and they just kind of follow the pack. What's happening here? I don't know I think I really feel like increasingly. There are just enough people. I don't know how voters individually or feeling about not pressure to pick a certain person person but the like doing the work to really choose the thing you love the most because every year you read those blind items that variety are Hollywood reporter daily beast. I do yeah And you read these Oscar voters say things and they all have. They all seem to have individual taste rate to hear these. I voters justify why they're voting. They're voting for you. You would think anything could win but that never happens will rarely happens right so I also also believe that in this particular year. I think there's a lot of politics going on like like movie. Industry politics rang. Explain plan so I don't think that people. I think there's a number of things happening. I think people don't like parasite that much. I think they see it. I think that was that was okay. I don't know how they could think that it actually got. It's like Robert Covington right now the NBA trade deadline. It's gotten hyped up too much now. People going wait a secondly. I think it's great it's awesome you're going to see it and you you end up going and you're like yeah it's good but you're not like Oh my God you're right I'm blown away. Yeah Yeah I can't speak but some people are leaving matt a Lake Nona. Nope they're leaving. They're probably just watching it at home but like they're they're watching this movie and they're just Kinda like well okay. I and I'm rich people poor people and I think that I mean I really think that they think it's that simple and I also think good. I really liked it. I didn't think it was like the best picture picture the year I why do but you do really. I was the case in a minute. I think it's just okay. The very simple thing is it takes a story. It takes an idea that I can't believe that in a hundred and you know twenty years of movies. Nobody's ever done before nobody's ever fought to turn the class. Divide into into a game in this particular way. Yeah and by the time they get to the sect by the time the father other by the time the father gets the job. So the third the third introduction of the the glomming onto this family. I'm just I was just laughing. I was is laughing with happiness at the brilliant to this idea. He's such a great of these nine movies and most like almost all of them are perfectly made. I would say that's the one that surprised me the most in terms of how tight and smart and and surprising it was the one thing I don't like goodbye it is the ending but in talking to people about who also sort of ending is anticlimactic but it also needs to be there none. Nobody could come up with a better trending. So this is the endings. Movie needs to have this elegiac sort of tragic fantasy ending. I liked once upon a time. The most I mean and as you know I also love them. We did a podcast about that on this podcast. Back in August we wait. Let's go back though we dated Rewatch ables. That's coming this week about about it already. Yeah well we do one Oscar movie every year O- of the nine area to get out on time. That seems fair. Yeah UH-HUH I think forward and for our versus Ferrari of those nine movies. That in little women I think are the most those are going to prove to be the most re watchable bowl of those. I'm so glad you said that. I feel like those have become the underrated. I'm not sure what happened. In each case moves. I thought little women was excellent. Women Soak so good the crazy thing about this year. Is there a two stores. I just wrote a story about this for the paper and the the the maddening thing about these nine movies please. And I'll get back to the into back to what people are saying about who they are. Why nine hundred seventeen is going to win for political reasons Movie movie industry political reasons. But I just read a piece about like how. This is the first year since they expanded the field ten. Move to up to ten movies that I have liked every single one of these movies more or less except for one and I don't like joker either. Yeah I don't like never really really align this year on what we didn't like I like that I didn't. I don't like joker I didn't have fun. I thought his performance was awesome. But I've seen a lot of movies that whereas the performance was awesome. But I'd necessarily loved the movie right I don't even I don't even Joaquin. Phoenix is one of my four favourite male actors. And this does not I feel like this is the first time he is looking for a character as like we are watching him do work mark. The I think it's done before you start shooting in this movie Part of it is. He is playing a person who's changing but he's always playing people who were undergoing some sort of ecological little change wasn't he's so much more interesting in the master. Oh everything he was doing. If you're going to start there then I'm like why did you give just give Antonio Banderas the Oscar. I mean that's where you're GONNA start but I'm saying like I don't know why I took this movie for people to like. Here's his Oscar. Movie when he was so good the pastor I mean the thing that was more interesting performance interesting thing that we should talk about. Is that like he is one of those people were. He's just a person who is owed right like it's he's been he's a set of a woman quote suffered so long just give him just give it to him not that he's begging for it because because when he took this part I was like oh well you know he clearly. He clearly understands with businesses going and I would never accuse him ever of like being being interested in getting any prizes for the work. He's doing but I also feel like there is a sense that he's been nominated three other times. I think maybe maybe four do you remember how lost to the master who who when they're You're talking keep your point going on anyway. I feel like if I sat here and thought about it. I'd come my with but I'm not going to remember those thirteen Two thousand thirteen. So we have. Is that Matthew mcconaughey. Now it's not McConnell. Now he lost a Daniel Day. Lewis Link Oh well that's that's just bad luck for Joaquin Phoenix. I remember having issue with that at the time you should have. I mean just just as a matter of history you should rostker you blaspheme. He's fine. He's fine I thought Athletes Ship

'1917' wins best film and best director at BAFTA awards

"So let's jump over to the baptism this is like the equivalent of like England's equivalent of the Oscars right. Yeah exactly this is the the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards and they they tend to skew a little bit more towards British films for obvious reasons so it should come as no surprise that both nineteen seventeen and director Sam Mendez came out on top with a win for best film and for best director and just for good measure nineteen seventeen also one on outstanding British film which isn't a war that they give specifically to films that were made by British filmmakers across the pond so no surprise there even the best best actor awards all went to the same people that it seems like they're going to go to for the Oscars Joaquin Phoenix Won. Four Joker Renee Zellweger one for Judy. The Laura dern won for marriage story for supporting actress and Brad Pitt one for once upon a time in Hollywood for supporting actor. So these these all seem like deadlocks for the acting categories Gorey's wants the Oscars roll around and it just continues to spell more a positive spin for nineteen seventeen winning the Oscar. If if it comes to that but again you know there has been an uptick in support for movies like parasite Enjo- Rabbit and whatnot. So we there's a chance that parasite could pull a quarter and upset. Even though plenty of people would be very happy to see parasite win.

"It does McCain a little bit about it too hard. I there are points that which I'm sure you could just tug and the whole thing would logically unravel so I have trick which is to not think I'm watching these these kind of movies. You are cow if I were if you are or if you were as you categorize yourself as one of life's thinkers than it might be difficult given the amount of AH starch. You consume yes in your diet of watching peaks of somewhat Klag. I I think you've made I think you've given everybody some really good advice there and that is to not think well what tune this film because when I know what it's like because because I am a thinker also I find sometimes that I'm thinking while I'm watching something and you know what that leads. Of course that leads to speaking. Yeah and then. I'll start speaking about the various implausibility also loose threads and it may ruin it for us or it just may make it impossible to continue so yeah I think you've hit on something especially as an Australian we. All of us is trying to have been exhibiting many signs of not thinking of the past couple of years and I think to continue it into your leisure time into the world. VEGETATE is a brilliant idea to do. I think you're being sought on it I am I'm thinking I am you'll being I am but I'm also being serious okay. Well we'll leave my my aunt. The great on sued question posed by this film. Can kind of cyborg page. That's interesting hasn't had words tight tight skin. He's got there is maybe tight but it's he has definitely there's no question won't obviously I want him to. Because I could put my up close. I look do that. We'll Smith the interesting thing is. His character has become marginally more human so he has developed some human characteristics. He has evolved so which which is an interesting proposition. That's something I wouldn't be thinking about as I said thinking Lisa speaking of talking about these things that you should so the whole premise of the tornado world is machine. Learning right the the you cried artificial intelligence and then then takes its own decisions okay. Eight decides besides the greatest threat to the planet is humanity therefore wipe out humanity right. So that's that's really the starting position and so the idea that a machine in the form of a terminator could develop could actually acqui- human characteristics is is not quite as fanciful as it might seem so quite like that element of it. But the idea that he could develop human characteristics such as but you know cellular degeneration babs little more fanciful that anyway. Is it going to get in the way for the the people who aren't thinking I don't think so art on my people is shallow like you would spoke about regarding Renee Zellweger and her Changed Appearance People might be the only thing that people talk about when they're on rotten tomatoes topping up their little reviews. Is Animals face vice. It may well be. That's that's the thing that people talk about. It's that's completely different are going to say it's different yet. He's aged. It's not about the fact that he's aged aged. What what is he doing in the movies? He's is not which was the tenor of the renee. Zellweger discussion back in two thousand and sixteen or fourteen. Sixteen whatever. This is kind of machine H.. Right so it's about the logic about the nerds out there and they've of which thankfully I'm not sure clearly healing really not going. Not No one would ever accuse you being a nerd which is not casino. The no offense to the notes out there okay. I've been called by myself so you know so. Terminator Duck Fight. It does what it does pretty well and if you enjoy that kind of thing as some of us who think watching movies apparently it's not a bad damned with faint praise against the very upset..

"About your business and if you're looking for something to watch we've been talking about TV and movies you know people got some days off for a day off tomorrow they might want to sit back on the couch and watch something and something I rented I think we rented it yeah on Amazon prime was Judy it's the new film and it's been nominated I think Renee Zellweger was nominated for a golden globe and I just want to say off the top like I want to take back every plastic surgery joke I made it Renee Zellweger's expense really because she like there's something weird about the poor I I I I have conflicted feelings about it but whatever I'm still thinking about a film days after I've seen it I feel like that's a something there right yeah so she plays Judy Garland at a period in her life at the very end and I had said before that she was doing the palladium that was previous this was that the talk of the town in London this was like her last attempt to sort of pull it all together and make money her kids were staying with said loft she was fighting for custody and so they were like you gotta go make money because if you want to ever get your kids back you know Roy you need to go make some money in those British people they love you so she goes over to do this and she just can't keep it together and it's just it's just a heavy it's sad but but I was struck by how Renee Zellweger was able to inhabit so much of her of Judy Garland yeah you know because Judy Garland is one of those people who's just almost a caricature of herself yeah mannerisms her language her voice the intonations her you know costumes so you you have to know that that's incredibly hard cannot make it like a cartoon exactly and I won't say there were times where I thought it seemed a little cartoonish but then I kept doing the thing where I was like well she was cartoonish if yeah watch if you go back and watch old performances of Judy she seems cartoonish so then I just kept thinking wow I think Renee actually know the singing was not my favorite okay and singing Judy Garland who's gonna do that other than Judy Garland her own voice say she was wrong for yeah couldn't be done by anybody awhile so I you know cut her some slack in that regard and you know the movie doesn't tell the whole story it very much tells the story there's flashbacks of when she was a child star and it's kind of the film I think is making the point that she was a victim of the Hollywood studio system and they were pumping her full of drugs from a very early age uppers downers yes in and that's what you know can you meet me made the comment earlier how you know her drug abuse bothers you does it help that she got addicted at a very young age because of her job in the studios giving her drugs that that bothers there that really bothers me and as far as I'm concerned it probably continues to this day yeah you know we've seen child stars just gold wall fully south on us when they hit their teens and twenties you know yeah well we still talk about I mean yesterday we were just talking about Lindsey longhand yeah yeah and I know she's not an actress but this whole Britney thing really worries me yeah I wonder if there's a a human in there somewhere because she's just so controlled you know it's really upsetting yeah absolutely you watch those videos of Britney spears on Instagram and you're like I'm not sure that we're dealing with somebody who's he said yeah now you said that you want to apologize for any plastic surgery comment you made is that because you really admire of the performance and so or do you want it she now I just want to because we used to you know make fun of like all the sudden she showed up looking not like herself people and she were very critical of that yeah and you this is an easy thing to sort of poke fun and I was just trying to make the point that I want I don't think she necessarily deserves the Best Actress award for the year compared to all the other women that were nominated but her performance really did I thought she did an amazing job because I kept seeing some form of Judy Garland versus some form of Renee Zellweger okay you know I feel like Renee Zellweger has such an identifiable persona her purse face yes do you know a lot about garland so if you when you were watching this movie could you tell a where the producers and directors and and what not got it wrong or fabricated nonsense that didn't happen that's something I don't know super well I kinda know her charges the trajectory of her life and I knew that said loft like at that point I kind of knew where things were and her family and that's the point at which she's about to be found dead in London and so I had a general sense I do want to go back and sort of find out what they left out and but it also made me think about and Kenny I think you'd like this and and don and anybody who loves old Hollywood there is a series of tapes that Judy recorded I think a little bit earlier that before this film was supposed to take place where they wanted her to write an autobiography an autobiography but she's never would do it like everything she wouldn't you know it just wouldn't follow through yeah and so they gave her a tape recorder and they said just yourself right and there are these like DJIA's is insane the surreal it is literally a surreal we used to just listen to it I just heard the like have you heard them okay so you're you're not having a V. as the wizard of oz so I got it okay see Ireland pretty deep for awhile yes so and it used to be before the dawn of the internet these things would be passed around and cassette tape form yes and then they you know made it on to the internet and so we were able to listen to them and you will laugh at some points in and your your you just will feel despair because she rants on the couch late at night talking about how she's been done wrong my Hollywood and you know the custody battle with said loft and so you just can feel the you know great and the sad this is yeah it's definitely and that's when she really does for me turn into a cartoon of herself yeah because you know that she's just blasted on many yeah shells and alcohol only drunk yeah hi on pills yeah and just helpless to control it you know not not in control of yourself you know unable to control her own intake so don what do you think of her in a star is born fifty four that was the first remake yeah do you like her and then I I do it's vastly different from the other ones yeah yeah yeah much is definitely like it's only yeah it's very sad yeah I it it it's one of the saddest performances really that I've seen what about I have not seen judgment at Nuremberg I've seen that either well I haven't either yeah I I really need to see that one that was made in sixty one and I'd love to see your performance there what what year did she go past nineteen sixty nine yeah okay so in June so do you feel like it Renee Zellweger is worthy of this golden globe nomination I think the nomination for sure yeah and I think she's up against them I I don't remember the list I have to look at his I thought well she's probably not going to win but I just wanted to give her some credit because in my partner to be fair my partner did not care about the film he thought it was too campy and over the top but I'm like it's Judy believe in garland of course it's going to be campy and over the top that's that was her life yeah just sort of wanted to be around her there's this delightful at the one of the things I want to follow up on this movie Judy was they show these to this gay couple sort of befriended her in London okay and they were just like super fans and she kind of sort of Guam don to them because they were sort of you know the only people that she felt in some weird way connected to okay and I've been meaning to check up and see if you know of that is factually if they existed yeah they could they could just be fabrication but then you see little warm aloft and little what's what's your brother's name I forget is the two kids I mean they're still around yeah and I just think about Laura and how it must be you know in two thousand nineteen I doubt that they're going to see the showing a license that she would watch it in this film okay okay so best performance by an actress in drama is her competition is Cynthia a Revo for here yet Scarlett Johannson in marriage story the seer Sharon in for little women and Charlize Theron for bomb shell yes the she's I mean she's up against tough I haven't seen those films but I imagine yeah I have not yeah I haven't gosh I haven't seen any of the other ones Jamie's probably seen all of them you're far he's actually on the he's on his way in fact every time I call now between now and the Oscar nom and nominations he'll be watching films he has a list of all the golden globe nomination this he will then have a list of all the Oscar nominated films and he will we talked about this yesterday yeah yeah that's great so he really wasn't into it he thought it was too cartoonish yeah he's like I'm sitting there weeping and he's over there like really and I'm like I can help it said I will cry something if you've ever struggled I mean not that he hasn't had issues in his life but yeah you know if you've if you've ever struggled with anything you if you ever just feel people yeah just not being able to get herself together yeah for sure yeah well anyway that film you can rent it it's a rented car because I can't I almost can't go to the movie theater anymore I very rarely gonna go out tonight will be one of the few nights that we actually go to the theater I didn't see Star Wars though so right now we went to the theater some big movies that you need to see in the theater just because it's feels like you should you know likes it rises guy Walker you know we mentioned Britney spears in this conversation yeah sure there is a coffee machine that sounds like Britney spears so I think when we come back we should listen to this coffee machine and judge for ourselves whether nonsense like Britney yes we do that let's do that alright we'll come back right here on my talk on a seven on my talk one of seven one everything I AS one taking a look at you entertainment.

NYC studios podcast trump ink he says Donald Trump connections to Ukraine go way back you know so many parts of trump world intersect with Ukraine it's actually kind of crazy I think the most famous it would be Paul mana for Paul man a fort worth for Ukrainian strong man but Rudy Giuliani has been making trips to Ukraine for many years as well and president trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen also has Ukraine connections so I I've been interested in the country for for a while so in the latest episode of trump ink we kind of get the origin story to the relationship between the trump and Ukraine it starts as you say with Paul man a fort and the former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych when he was running you had a coverage was kind of the old docks candidate the oligarchs being the richest and most influential businessmen in the country and when he began a campaign most Ukrainians didn't support him you mentioned in your podcast that was meant for it who basically turn that around forty.
