Tv shows like ally mcbeal and the good wife and the soap opera one life to live and now she gets to show off her comedy chops not to mention her ability to parody nineties pop songs in a new show called girls five aba. It just got renewed for a second season. So here's the plot. It's about a one. Hit wonder girl group from the nineteen nineties whose members have dropped out of music and have pretty much been living in obscurity. One of them's even a dentist. But when a hip hop artist decides to sample one of their old songs people remember they performed together for the first time in decades on a late night show and end up deciding they wanna keep performing. They fire their sexist manager who took advantage of them when they were younger and decide to write their own new songs. They wanna make music again as a group even though the odds are against them the executive producer of girls. Five ebba is tina fey. And you can tell the jokes come fast and feminist and the songs may feel like you know them from the nineties but the lyrics make fun of misogyny of those times goldsberry plays the character wicky. I'm so happy to be here. Can you describe your character. Wicky roy wicky is desperately in need of a second chance. She is a woman who believes that stardom was destined for her and she also is under the misbelief that she needed to climb over everybody along the way to achieve her dreams and when we meet her we discover that that did not work out for her and she has a pretty hard lesson ahead of her to figure out how to turn. I think what is a beautiful talent away from being something that's cancerous in her and into something that really lifts her and everyone around her up as high as possible. I think part of the reason why people love this series is the songs they sound just like. They're supposed to sound john wise. They sound like songs from the late nineties. Early two thousands from girl and boy groups but they also make fun of the lyrics. Do you have a favorite song of the ones you saying. Oh my gosh dream girlfriends. Is this one song dream girlfriends. 'cause our dads are dead so you never have to meet them and get asked why you left school like they're just so very calm the line about tarantino like i love tarantino i like stand up but not by women like every single song from the split need to famous five ever. You know. there are just so brilliantly constructed they walk this line between being real songs that somebody would put out in the ninety s like you said making fun actually kind of making us aware of some of the ridiculous things that we might have thought but also being just good enough to be to make it on an album but you understand why it didn't make it as a hit. One of your breakout moments was in a production at shakespeare in the park. The musical two gentlemen of verona. And you've got great reviews the times called you. What is it. I can tell you well. Whatever time spark plug of musical wit and vitality. I believe this. The show. Shakespeare in the park white year is a two thousand and five two thousand five. So why did that show was the impact on your career. It was huge. It was huge. I remember when i got the soap opera. I was still in the soap opera. At the time i remember. My fear of the job was that i would be not written for but in a contract where i i was just sitting there and i couldn't do anything else and the beauty is the opposite happened. They did end up writing for me. And i had an opportunity. My executive producer. Frank valentini used to let me do all the theater in the world. He's made it work. And kathleen marshall cast me to play. Sylvia in two gentlemen of verona opposite norm. Lewis with rod dawson and oscar. Isaac there. "And there And Tondena or Ondine is a famous name from European mythology. The German writer director Christian Petzold puts his own spin on the legend. This Indiana, played by Paula Beer lives in present day Berlin and works as a city historian. You wouldn't guess that there's anything supernatural about her or that she is bound by a single rule. If a human lover betrays her, she must take his life. We see her preparing to do just that. Early on. When her latest boyfriend, Johannes tells her he's leaving her for another woman. Petzel takes a somber, realistic approach to this outlandish premise. There are no obvious visual effects, and Indiana's mythological origins are never spelled out. But the story unfolds with such sly matter of fact, nous that I soon found myself immersed in it. Before she has time to deal with Johannes Andina is swept off her feet by another man, Christoph. And the two plunge headlong into a love affair that consumes them both and, like most of Indiana's love affairs is not fated to end happily. Christoph is played by Franz Rogowski, who appeared together with Paula Beer in Petzold. Previous film Transit. The actors are captivating to watch, and the reunion here adds to the movies faintly otherworldly feel. Petzel likes to use genre to illuminate different chapters of German history, and Tondena is no exception. His filmmaking is so elegant and concise that you may not realize he's slipping in a lesson on the history of Berlin itself, a history of war devastation and reconstruction. Which Tondena has long born witness. She's a truly timeless heroin in a movie that I've seen multiple times now and which becomes more mysterious and magical, with each revisit. "Of girls five ever are played by two real life Broadway stars Sarah Morella's and Renee Elise Goldsberry. Rounding out the group are former SNL writer Paula Pell and Freaks and Geeks alum busy Phillips. Those two are not known for their singing. But Pitino says they can and do well, when I pitched the show, you know, we all thought. Oh, look, you know, we really only need to find One actress who can sing as well and the rest can maybe one holds attuned. Maybe one just collapse. You know they don't have to be incredible. But then we just kept getting Talent that could do everything. So the first person we went out to you with Sarah Morella's and we felt like it was a swing because we didn't know if she would want to do the show. But Tina had seen her and waitress and Tina was like this. She's so natural. She's her timing is great. She's a really, really good address. So we took a swing and went to her. And she said yes, and then because she said, Yes, we felt like okay, well, let's find more of the most amazing people. And the next person we went to was Rene who? Obviously everyone knows from Hamilton, But Tina had an inside hot tip from working with her on the movie sisters. Rene seen eventually, unfortunately, got cut out. I think they shot way too much advantage. But they said she's really funny. So we went to her next and she wanted to do it and then Pollen. Busy kind of came together as we got closer and closer to shooting. Both of them were living in l A. And you know, Paula was on AP Bio. And I just I just didn't really think it was possible that they would end up on a New York City show. But busy had coincidentally decided to move East and so Tina called her and said, Hey, everyone East, Huh? I got a job you might be interested in and she was immediately which was great. And then Paula happened to be kind of waiting out the pandemic. In North Carolina, and she also was like, Yeah, I'm in on the East Coast I'm in. So we just got the best cast. I mean, I don't know if you had those broad types in your head before or you left the cast somewhat shaped the types of the women in the pop group. Well, we had the parts. Written We did, However, once we got our cast tried to write more to them and also learn their strengths. Sarah is Super funny physical comedian, and she's also just got wonderful timing. And Renee. You know, in the pilot, there's a line that she just burst into song. I thought there's little think of stuff is gonna be my take it back to the fame and the lifestyle I am owed because of the voice God I put in wine. Wow, Esso. We started writing more punch lines for her where she gets to sing them, right. That's like us a little stick that she has. Yeah, So finding those little things and then writing towards them was very fun. And then, of course, you plunge into shooting.

"Of a lot of the shows that Tina Fey has produced. The jokes come fast and furious. It's a pop culture satire on It's just really, really funny. You can find it on Peacock. And, uh, there's music in it, Of course, um, much of it written by Jeff Richmond, Who's Tina Fey's husband, and the songs are really funny and catchy, very evocative of what was going on in the late nineties. Uh, but just It's just a really fun and hilarious show anything you'd compare it to. Uh, I mean, it's it's sort of, you know, you can see it as a descendant of 30 Rock, and that it is really talking about how ridiculous it is to work in the entertainment industry. And again, the pacing of it is is really quick and funny. Um, but you know, one of the really great performances, and it is from Renee Elise Goldsberry, who was in the original cast of Hamilton. You haven't seen her doing comedy like this Necessarily. And she is just hilarious is a self involved, diva. Well, thank you for Ah, letting me know how to properly pronounce the shelf girls. Five ever. All right? And Sunday night, Zewe premieres on Showtime. Tell us what this is all about. And who is the way So the way is a comedian who has kind of blown up online. You may have seen her doing interviews on YouTube or Instagram. And she brings that energy to this new talk show on Showtime, where she interviews people and she talks about Provocative issues like race, but she does it in a way. That's both funny, and that leads to really interesting discussions On the first episode. One of her guests is friend Liebowitz and one of the questions she asked her is what annoys you more slow walkers or Racists s O that That's the kind of caliber of question that you get. "You know, there is a step means nothing mother, his mother, and because it's not true, it's It's an effective means for telling her that he's in pain. And you say the worst things that people you love the absolutely right thing. Especially at that age, And for me, it feels like ties screaming for help. Absolutely the the poor way that he does it. Yeah. You're in. A lot of the pressure is that Ronald is trying to protect his son from systemic racism on DH prepare his son for systemic racism. What what? What Catherine's responses to those same forces because he is so intense about it. I'm curious how she is responding to it and how she's trying to teach her Children in my in my own life. I I think that as parents, you tend to balance the other one out if one parent is typically Very kind over protecting, you know, overprotective you tend to like, say, you know, he'll be fine. Go, go, go. You just You just tend to balance each other out, and I think that's definitely happening in this film. I I see. Catherine as Tyler's person that you know the mother is, I think the sun's person in this way and you asked earlier. Why did he not say anything to the father? It's almost more painful. Why does he not say anything to the mother? Because I think she seems to try to be a safe place for the Children. And as a parent myself. I was thinking about this The other day. I saw a young boy I was picking up my daughter from school, and I saw this young boy ride by me and a bike and get hit by a car a couple weeks ago, and he was fine. He kind of rolled over this car and and he was okay and We're trying to convince him to go to urgent care, and he didn't want to go because he didn't want his parents to know that he was riding a bike without his helmet. And I thought this is what our job is. As parents. It is Tina. We play like we are the judge and jury in our homes. But it is really on ly to launch our Children. In reality. We are not the judge. We are the advocate. And if we don't teach our Children What were their advocate, then they are not safe in the world. And I think this movie is a cautionary tale about both parents. Not just the overbearing one. But the super ly. Sweet loving one failing to make sure that the Children know when you make a mistake. My job is to take care of you. You run to me and let me know if you know it's and I'm not the sentence, sir. I am the one who's going to protect you. And so I think even the really sweet mother that's rubbing his head all the time has failed to communicate that to the child, and that's what I That's why I encourage mothers and fathers. Whatever role you play in your family to go see this movie so true when you originally wrote this movie. Correct me if I'm wrong. It wasn't a black family. Initially. I know that's not true because it wasn't written. Yet. It was basically broad ideas, the family But then, as soon as any real writing started, it was always a black family, and specifically that with the collaboration account And when you thought about this, did you ask yourself the question? I'm a white dude. Um, I'm going to be able to understand some of the nuances of a middle class black family. Yeah, So I mean, it was basically the fact that Calvin and I already know each other. We love each other. I believe in collaboration, and it's everything toe art and especially filmmaking, so Between that and the fact that this is a deeply deeply personal movie to myself and my family as well. It felt right. It felt right that we could combine our point of used where we could make something specifically a black family that's going through. I think universal universal things, you know, grief life tragedy trying to heal. That's any family can connect with that. But like, I think, Because of this unique relationship I have with Calvin and the trust we had established. It felt like we could. We could do this honest together. If that makes sense. You know what I love about. Our wonderful writer director here is that There were challenges I think inherent in casting the film the way that he did on DH. He chose not to let that stop him from casting it the way that he wanted to cast it. Hey, chose to kind of be kind of blind to that and say we weaken do this because I'm going to cast the best actor and then the best actress after that, What's really beautiful Is that even though he did that he was he is very aware I was I watching the movie. For the first time I saw my community reflected in in ways that I didn't think we communicated to him. I'm telling you this for the first time, but I mean, I I was like, Oh, my God. How does he know this And that and the other? There are things he was very collaborative. And there are things that we shared. And then there are things that are just here. Somehow. I don't know how you knew to do some of the nuances that air there, but I find it very authentic. To not only universally but to who we are specifically as black people. What was something that you learn in this film or was challenging for you in this film Calvin that you'll take for your further projects. Your next project how to protect myself Better doing a movie like this, You know, you dive in, especially when the young actor you like you really want to do well, and you really want Renee to be proud of you right out of you and You know succeed, and you just You can almost abandoned yourself during the process, And that's not good. You know, I took me a year to kind of shake Tyler off. Get a therapist afterwards, but Ultimately, I think it was important experience for me to go through. Just it's a craft and I need to use my craft better, but I mean, I just got so into the characters, so it's only the darkness of it now. Yeah, absolutely about for you, Rene something that was challenging in this. It's a great question, I think. I would take from this The I think the license too. Bring more of myself to every roll. Like I said, I loved the fact that she was on the page on DH. What I learned when I got there is that you know he was asking for even more than it was on the page. He was. He was really welcoming every part of my experience to inform this this film, and I think I would give myself even more license to show up the next time. With with, you know, you know more of me. I mean, I think there's there's even more of me to offer any any production, especially with a really good director. So I think I feel like I have that license now, and I'm grateful for it. What about she was a filmmaker. Oh, I did. This movie has been my life for the past three years and all of my heart and soul on everything is a human being. And I believe in so I can't. It's too big of an answered some of it's It's everything that was Renee Elise Goldsberry, writer director Trey Edward Schultz and actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. Who joined us last fall to discuss their film waves, which is now available to stream on prime video. "To all of it on WNYC. See, I'm Alison Stewart It'sa Hamel Friday We're celebrating the talented creators and performers who were part of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton. Of course, the movie dropped earlier this summer, opening up the experience to a whole new audience. We're kicking off this hour with actor Renee Elise Goldsberry, who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Angelica Skylar in Hamilton. But Rene is also a gifted dramatic actress, and when she joined us last fall, we spoke to her about her role in a film called Waves, which is now available to stream on prime video. At the beginning of the film. Our protagonist, Tyler Williams, has it all. He's the star of his high school wrestling team in Florida. He's crazy about his girlfriend, Alexis. He studies hard and plays piano. His parents love him, and his sister does too, in that sibling kind of way. But his father, played by Sterling Kay Brown insists that because they are a black, middle class family, they have to work 10 times as hard as everyone else to get ahead. That means working out with his father every weekend. Never taking a homework break, never losing a wrestling match and the his mother, Katherine, played by Renee Elise Goldsberry tries her best to relieve some of Tyler stress. The pressure from his father continues to mount. And when a serious injury and startling news for his girlfriend throws Tyler into a downward spiral, the tragic consequences leave the Williams family left to pick up the pieces. Now That's the plot, but you really have to see waves to get the full sensory experience. The cinematography is vibrant and electric. The camera swoops and spins the music of Kanye West, Kendrick, Lamar and Frank Ocean create a thumping heart beat of this film. Rene was joined by co star actor Kelvin Harrison Jr and writer director Trey Edward Schultz. I read that took about 10 years to get this project together, so I began by asking Trey why waves was a decade in the making honest, it wasn't anything crazy was just creative. I didn't know it was You know ideas for this, but I didn't know how they all came together. And it was the broad structure you know, and brother and sister. But how does this all intermingle and it was honestly, just that and creative and I think A few things coming together for why it was now that it was ready. You know, I think getting to the other side of some personal stuff and having perspective on that on beating Cal on my last movie in that collaboration, and then all those things and then Yeah, it was time. You know, you should be on the radio all the time. Thank you. So you said that you had spent some time with kids to make sure that this script felt really authentic. What did you learn? What was something that you had to change in the script? That creepy the way you did research to fully understand the experience of a teenage Tio? Ah, I I mean, yes, it was a did research like old man online and Ah, talk to some kids had a few kids read the script and get perspective. Shockingly, not a ton had to change. It was Mohr was specificities, You know, specificity of the social media and some language and stuff. But what was really interesting is, I think so much of the movie kind of brew out. Of Kelly and I talking about our time at that age with my girlfriend as well and like our experiences and head spaces, and so, like first, it really started from there and then making sure that it worked contemporaries well, but what I realize is, you know, I think some of these things were going through are a bit timeless And like even our parents were struggling with stuff in different ways. Of course, Each generation has its new nuances and But that's what it was really about finding the specificity of now, you know? Renee, What did you think when you read the script? I was so grateful that the characters of parents I play the mother Katherine were developed in ways that I find unique in films about high school. Kids or even college kids. The parents tend to be kind of off on an island there either, like the foil or they're you know they're to provide something, but they don't. Actually if you're looking through the perspective of the child, you don't typically really see an accurate three dimensional person There. That is also kind of responsible and suffering for whatever happens, and in this instance I was, I was so pleasantly surprised. To see the development of both parents and you know windows into their reality and kind of how you young people are kind of affect their relationship and caring. What happens to their relationship was Really disrespecting. Okay. You said you worked with Trey on this a bit. So when you first got the script, and you looked at it, what were some of the things that you thought? You know what we should do this or we should do that. I'd like to see this in my character or any of the other characters. Yeah. I mean, I was first I was just so blown away about how well he was able to listen and actually see me from those conversations we had is like You know you meet someone. You have this beautiful relationship with them, and he feels like my big brother. But then you don't. Do you actually love me enough to to represent my version of what my family could look like in the script. I was impressed and grateful for it. But then it was just really getting into like the dad and what were the small things that would remind us that he's still he's a human being as well and that His his. His motives also have justification in some sense, so it was trying to find out what was making Ronald work the way he did, and we just kind of kept talk fleshing out. You know, I was like, What would my dad say when he walked into my bedroom when he wants to check me and the with the flesh, and the foundation was always there. That monologue Stirling hasn't that Room was always there, and we just kind of worked it out. Did you do chemistry tests it all with actors and you know, it really was the first time their whole family..
