"Focused when working from home. Are you ready? Well let's get started. Maybe you've been working from home for awhile. And finding focus challenge or maybe because of corona virus or something else. You find yourself working at home for the first time. I'm talking to you today about focus and you're probably thinking going to talk to me about how to focus on my work when I'm at home that's all. I'm going to talk about. Talk about focused in two areas. Here they are number one. Yes I want to help you focus on your work. So when you're working you can be most effective but also want to help you focus on your life so that you can live your life and not always be working. Let's talk about both of those things got. Here's the thing if you try to switch back and forth. It's not going to go very well. Your focus won't be effective in either area if you're always switching back and forth now. I'M NOT TALKING TODAY ABOUT BALANCE. About how much time you spend doing one or the other but rather to focus on the one that you're in that moment different times in life you might spend relatively more time in one area life or work than another. That's not the purpose today. The focus is today on when you're in one you're in that one be present at work be present in Your Life Okay. So given that. Let's talk about each and we will start with focusing on our work number one with the other people around you. You need to set expectations because the other people in your house are not working when you're working probably so you need to be clear with them about this point. Hey when I'm working I need to be working. And so what does that look like in your situation? When can people interrupt you or not? Can they at all? What are your expectations? What you need so that you can stay focused on work and get. Excuse me. Get that clear with them because it will go way better if you've thought about that on the front end and you've talked about it on the front end next. Give clues if you're working from the dining room table. This will be harder than if you have your own office but people need to know okay. They are working now. Maybe the door can be closed. But if you're in the at the dining room table maybe you can't do that. So what are you GONNA do? It gives people a visual and a mental queue or a clue that hey they're working let them work and the third thing is you need to define urgent because your version of urgent for an interruption is likely different than your ten year old. Who wants to ask you a question about something so get some clear. Definition of what urgent means I often joke with my team is. I don't need to be. I don't want to be interrupted by a fire unless you actually smell or see smoke now. Let's kind of silly but what it's about is to get to this point of. Is it really truly urgent or you? Just are you just thinking about it and WanNa ask about it right now? Have that conversation with those that you live with so that you can both be clear and so that when you're working you can be focused on your work but when you're not working you need to focus on your life and I've got three ideas or pieces of advice for you there as well and the first one is closed the laptop and then leave the laptop closed. When you're not working if it's closed it's less likely you will pick it. Open it back up if you have. You made the conscious decision to close it and then you look at it closed. Hopefully that will keep you focused on. Nope not now right now. I'm focused on life and network. Second Phone Accountability. You've seen it right you know. You're you're eating dinner at someone's at Your House and then you get the one little thing on your phone. You're just GONNA CHECK IT and and I'm not even talking about social media talking about work and so right now. You're just doing that. One email. Ask The people in your life to hold you accountable. Hey are you working right now and if you really truly want to keep this focus on your life on your family or your friends right now than they can hold you accountable to put the phone back down. And even if it's really critical you can say just for one minute but if you stay there. They should say really. Are you still dealing with that one issue so I just encourage you to ask others to hold you accountable with this thing? That can very quickly suck us back into work when that wasn't our intention. And lastly remember what matters remember we work to live not the other way around? So make sure that when you're not working you're actually focused on your family on your friends on your hobby. Whatever it is that brings you joy in the rest of your life. Make sure that you've included that you're focused on that and remember that we work to live not the other way around so today. I've tried to give you a couple of ideas to help you focus because we're better at anything when we focus on it and I want you to be better at your work and better at your life and I know that when you do that working from home it can be harder so hopefully this was helpful and let me close with today's tweet when you were working from home. Be Working and then stop. Let everyone in the house. No when you're doing each one. "Dynamics more than just a written word. So don't panic get comfortable. The technology and and heightened your sensitivity an analogy about how you communicate. Is that a fairly to summarize. I think that's a very fair way to summarize it. You did in a minute. What it just took me tend to Babylon about so benefit of listening and not trying to make it up as I go. Well done you The one thing that I would add to that last night is that one reason face. Communication is so simple and by simple. I don't mean easy. I mean that. It's extremely natural right. Mine is are getting input at the same time as my ears at the same time as everything else so. I'm getting multiple messages. That allow my brain to process and say guy needs some explanation. Or He's digging this that's great. He's good. I'll go talk to the person that needs help when we work remotely. We don't get that stuff so we need to seek it out one of the things and this is much longer conversation but one of the really important things is that managers often make the mistake of treating their remote employees. Exactly the same as we treat the people in the office. We treat everybody the same. And that's a problem being as you see the people in the office every day right. You've gotTA shorthand with them. You're getting all kinds of cues right if I'm walking by and Bob is banging his head on the Monitor. It's easy for me to say is something wrong Bob. It's obvious clue if BOB is working from home and he hasn't said he has a problem. I'm assuming everything is fine. No clue unless you reach out and try to unless you out so the the the big takeaway that I would say is that you need more frequent shorter communication when you work remotely then were when you work together getting everybody together for a weekly meeting when everybody's in the office and they see each other at the coffee pot and you can call somebody into your office on a moment's notice is very different than having a weekly call when the rest of the time people are out in the provinces by themselves excellent point. So let's say somebody has you know they suddenly find themselves in this situation and and You know they've listened to this podcast episode and got okay. I've got some good tips and I'd really like talk. Dig into the similar to get better at what? What would you suggest they look at? Where where some resources? And how can they learn? More from your expertise. Yeah I think I mean. The obvious. Sales pitch is right. Long-distance later is a darn fine. Course the auto which is right. Kevin and I are very proud of it long. We have a downloadable content. We have videos and of course there is training and stuff both synchronous asynchronous that we can do. 'cause that's what we do. That's how we help. Leaders develop those skills but there's a lot of resources there to start with. There are also a number of excellent remote working blogs out there that so there's a lot of resources and Remote Leadership Institute. I'm I I've been through this I. It's a wealth of information so I appreciate the effort. You've put into developing those resources. Wayne is there's a ton of information there. Well one of the things I think important about what we do. Kevin I can bury in general but we've all lived it right. I've managed for twenty five. This is something that we seek out about and spend a lot of time thinking and writing and basically we do the research and try the software. So you don't have to basically short-circuit I've I've heard it said that A smart person learn from their mistakes and a wise person learns from other people's mistakes indeed and we hope that I. And here's here's some things you can learn from this stupid stuff we've done in our lives and hopefully it helps you do better so I want to thank you for being with me. "Live and another remarkable leadership. PODCAST glad that you're here Usually what I'm doing these I'm talking about leadership and that's what you would expect that I might talk about The title of tonight's event is the longest title ever What's the difference between lean a remote team member a great teammate? And you may not see the word leadership in there so you may wonder we're going. Here's what I'm going to say. I'm guessing guessing that many of you who are watching live or later are leading remote team members or are a remote team team member and so either way. Good stuff coming for you in the next few minutes. I'm GonNa talk about some things and by the way if you are a promote leader you're also a member of a remote team even though you happen to have a specific role as a leader. So we're GonNa talk about the two things that are in that long title and the first of those is the difference between a team member and a teammate. I'm GonNa Start there and then I'm going to tie it back into the remote piece piece before we're done now. You probably would say Kevin. There's no difference between a team member and teammate. And maybe grammatically there isn't a the difference But a good friend of mine colleague of mine. Who whose name it will come up in a few minutes? Actually watching year said to me. Awhile Back Kevin. There's a difference in the the difference differences important. And he's right and we'll talk about those differences not that I hadn't considered them but I hadn't thought about the use of those two words team member teammate teammate. So let's let's use those two as a dichotomy for a minute and talk about that. I I think if you are if you think or act or consider. Consider yourself to be a team member. You probably do your work. You probably do pretty good work. You focus on your work and get your work done but if you're a team mate you think about it differently you think about it bigger. Your work is defined as something more than just your work. It's something bigger than that. If you see yourself as a team member you focus on getting things done and there's nothing wrong with getting things done for sure but if you're if you think about yourself as a team mate You offer to help because there's more to it than just you if you are. You're a team member. You think inside of your silo. You're very clear on what's inside of your silo. But if you're a team mate you have a broader a set of boundaries. It's like you think about as a team member you're thinking about your stuff inside of your bubble inside of your circle but your circle is bigger when you think about things as a teammate. You're thinking about your team. You don't see yourself as an individual contributor. That's the thought process of a team member but a teammate thinks of themselves as a part of a team team members want to win. And that's good but teammates want the the team to win if you forced me to describe it in two words. Here's what I would say teammate. Thinks me team. Excuse me team member thinks me team mate thinks we now. There's nothing wrong with being team member. There's nothing wrong with being an individual contributor except in almost almost all of our work the reality is that our work is about more than us just getting our stuff done. We are a part of something larger. We're not operating in a vacuum and that my friends is where the remote part comes in. Because if you're doing your work if you're a remote worker will start there if you're a remote worker it's really easy for that silo to zoom in. It's really easy for you to get insular. It's really easy for you to take what I'm going to call the team. Member mindset. It's really easy to because listen you're alone and you're sort of on an island and you WanNa do good stuff and so the things you're focusing on or the stuff that's right around you. I'm challenging you that we have to think differently so back to my title. The title that I gave for this session in is. What's the difference between a remote team member and a great teammate? Can we be a great remote teammate. I think think we can but we have to start to think differently. The big idea of this short facebook live. Is this that there. There is a difference between being a team member and teammate and the difference is how we focus on our work the perspective that we have in the way we look at it. There's a difference in focus and a difference in perspective and now talking to you as leaders. Who Do you want? T- members or teammates. I'm guessing you want team mates. And so if that's what we want as a leader that's what we need to expect and that's what we want to work for and that's what we want to set as our goal and that's what we want to reward. We have to help people see it Differently if you are a remote worker in you have to make a decision you have to make a choice nice. That says listen. I'm going to look at this differently because if I want ultimate success it isn't just me. It's those around me and so there's a whole bunch of things that that you need to do differently. But I've given you the basic layout the basically out starts with a change in your mindset which says I gotta think differently make different choices and see my work as more than just the stuff on my personal to do list. That's the big idea Da. Tonight that's what I wanNA share with you. And if that wet wet your appetite wedded your appetite for something bigger. I hope it did because that's something that we can continue to think about. Challenge ourselves to do and get better at both as a worker team mate and as a a leader of a team. Now before I go.
