"City of Oakland's they also new GM because they fired Reggie McKenzie earlier this week, but the search process might be saying a lot about the power that route and holds because of what Davis had to say about the situation. When you're dealing with player personnel and general manager thrown a different schedule. Then the football team is. The general manager season ends basically, April may after they drafted the players and gone through the first series of free agency. So right now, there's a lot of people that are on other teams that may be suitable for the raiders as as, but we can't talk to and we won't be able to talk to him till mayor. So. And he's right. That's the way. It works is going to be running that draft. I April twenty fifth. I don't love this. And they got a bunch of draft picks. So this is the draft. You have to get right? I don't love this. You kind of have to nail this. This is the draft. This is this is like win general you want to know your drafts. This one matters a little bit more. Now, they lose Khalil Mack. And Mario Cooper, this is why joy, I don't buy into this. Get rid of Derek Carr thing like timeout. Derek Carr is is doesn't appear to be another Derek Carr. The kid at Ohio State, Dwayne Haskins looks pretty special to me. But it doesn't appear to be a Derek Carr. I would take all three of those pick seriously and just put them on defense because we can sail we want about being an offensive league. But the hottest teams in the league right now or the Chicago Bears the Dallas Cowboys, you know, Baltimore's playing. Well, he's got to go three for three on these picks. They are desperate for a pass rusher. Desperate for a corner. Desperate for linebackers. We'll look the mood. He's an offensive coat. So is he an expert at that? Right. And the moves were not it's not as simple as like the Khalil Mack move. They need a pass rusher. You're like, oh, well, you had Klay on that we had to pay Khalil Mack. And you're moving the franchise when you move the franchise you've got to pay for those people to move you want to unload, the big contracts that you have on on your roster. That's that's how it works. It's not fun or sexy. But like that's a reality in this situation. There's a business side to the sport. Also. So yes, it sounds silly. That you need to pass. Actually, I'm act, but that was going to happen when he was in Tampa Gruden made sixty one picks in seven seasons and three of those became pro bowlers. And only one of them was a pro bowler in Tampa. Yeah. I don't this is why I just don't listen. I don't like this to not being in charge of everything. Like, I believe that the power structure at the top of an organization is a direct reflection of how successful you are because consistency and an energy and the goal has come from the top. And you have to be supported, and obviously Gruden has a lot of power. He's the one of the ten year hundred million dollar contract..
Raiders craft a day to remember in a season to forget
"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Raiders crafted data remember in a season to forget by an Killian, call it. The revenge of the Coliseum every raiders game in Oakland. Feels like a week these days one final farewell to the memories in the moments that have filled Oakland Raiders history with most of the recent ones being largely forgettable for much of Sunday. It looked like game thirteen of the woeful twenty eighteen season was going to be just another whole home losing affair until the Coliseum rose up and said it shall not be. So that this was raiders versus Steelers, dammit for probably the very last time in Oakland, and it was going to be memorable. So after the raiders took the lead with twenty one seconds to play on a touchdown pass from Derek Carr, Derek carrier. And after the Steelers got into position to tie the game. Thanks to a forty three yard, hook and lateral. The old building. And it seeping innards went to work. Sunday's game took place in a chilling December ground fog that cast the Coliseum in gloom slicked the cracked concrete and suck moisture to the surface of the field. It was slippery out there Oakland running back. Jalen, Richard said, I was slipping it's always slippery. Here said tight end Jared cook, Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell trotted onto the field for the game tying field goal. Try planted his left leg and as he swung back. His right to kick his plant leg gave out from under him leaving dark Divet in the grass and the raiders filled with joy the raiders had won. They beat their historic rival, Pittsburgh twenty four twenty one for just their second win at home this year and third overall in the midst of the uproarious celebration on the field head coach Jon Gruden ran down to the black hole to high five the fans, it was the type of image that all the citizens of raider nation had in there. Minds when they got the news in January the Gruden was returning to Oakland. But there's been precious little to celebrate. I went to see my old friends all grownup Gruden said we're to in ten actually three in ten after the win. I wanted to thank them. It was an awesome seen today. I appreciate their support. They've been with us. No matter what it wasn't awesome seen black and silver mixed with black and gold. There might never have been so many opposing fans in the Coliseum for raiders game. Every play resulted in a roar from about half the crowd. I was surprised raiders receiver. Seth Roberts said I didn't know they traveled like that. Oh, they do the forty Niners can vouch for that. The Pittsburgh fans whose EM was dampened when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went out with a rib injury and the offense stalled he came back in the game to orchestrate one. Go ahead. Touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. And then got the team into field goal position with. That remarkable lateral play. But then the Coliseum rose up and did its work and rothlisburger exited without having one in Oakland leaving with an Owen four record. So Big Ben what were the field conditions like out there? Terrible. He said, but we knew that coming in. I shouldn't say terrible. I'm sorry. That's the wrong word the conditions weren't ideal. But our offensive coordinator Randy Fitch ner had addressed it all week and preached it every day to the offense. He said to make sure you have the right shoes. You saw how many times guys slipped out there? I think they might have slipped even more than we did Boswell said he's been using the same cleats since he'd been in Pittsburgh with seems a little crazy given the different conditions. Every NFL field offers, you can't blame anything Boswell said. It's his bad as it is for me as it is for anyone else. The kicker slippage is not going to go down in history with the immaculate reception or other great. Moments in the history of the two teams, but it gave fans a fun outcome in a woeful season. And the woes have continued the raiders are in position for the number three draft choice who will be making the decision. There was a story Sunday morning that general manager Reggie McKenzie would be departing the team after the season all the principles MacKenzie Gruden and owner Mark Davis, no commented on the story, which wasn't exactly groundbreaking. The assumption has been from the moment Gruden arrived and only reinforced as the season has unschooled that McKenzie would be on his way out sooner or later the players who MacKenzie drafted and that Gruden traded also were in the New Sunday receiver Amari Cooper had three touchdowns for Dallas including the game winner in overtime and two hundred seventeen yards on ten catches. The Cowboys are ready to put him in their ring of honor right now and Khalil Mack helped the bears beat the Rams on Sunday night football. A spot the Steelers raiders matchup got flexed out of partially because of max increased starpower. Meanwhile, the raiders sit tied for the worst record in the league with one game left in Oakland this season and ten thousand question marks about their status next season. The building is falling down around them on Sunday night, a janitor discovered to dead mice in the soda machine. In the press box, the one that dozens of people had been using to pour their drinks all day truth what a place, but on Sunday, it gave raiders fans at least one more memorable moment. A win courtesy of the dank damp Coliseum.

"You know, he loved the big guys as he was one. And you know, so many fines from Reggie McKenzie in my time at the Packers. I think a one guy that still there he's bounced around. But Reggie pluck them off the Houston Texans practice squad in two thousand six I believe his name Truman Williams. And everyone's like who's this guy? I'm registered like we're gonna love him. And here he is. Howdy starting for the Packers. Now, twelve years later. So this is the kind of guy Reggie would find he was sort of the master of finding these unknowns among practice squads and undrafted slow round picks. A couple of different questions off of this injury. I guess the first one is, you know, John gruden's quotes have suggested that he was surprised by the firing and that he and reg MacKenzie get along great. Do you believe that at all? I can believe they get along. You know, John's gregarious guy Reggie's who who cannot get along with regimen Kenzi nicest guy out there. But I don't believe he didn't know. I don't believe is blind. I guess they're saying it's the owner. I mean, I don't get that. And I think John knows that you know, listen. People listening to to your show my show. I mean, they know anyone believe anything Bill Belichick says about, you know, not having seen something not having done. Don't know what Facebook or Snapchat is. I mean, come on. This is kind of par for the course. Now with powerful coaches, they say things and expect people to believe them. And that's where we are with Gruden saying that. Do you think Andrew that? A GM and head coach can work when it's kind of an arranged marriage as opposed to coming together jointly. You know, I mean, it was MacKenzie first and then MacKenzie really wasn't the guy that hired Gruden. It just seemed like the structure was sort of naturally doomed to begin with at least like in Chicago Ryan pace hired Matt Nagy, and that's his guy then now, and I know he had already hired John FOX. But my point is is that it just seems like the structure and the hiring process was doomed from the get-go. Yeah. I guess. So I mean, sometimes you these things don't match up, and it's kind of cliche to say, it's never gonna work out. Well, but it just doesn't happen that way. You know, the guy I'm sure we're gonna talk to that. I focus on my talk about I focus on my podcast. The reason Mike McCarthy got hired in Green Bay is. We brought in general manager from Seattle. Ted Thompson where a head coach was occupying that GM coach title, Mike Sherman, and they coexisted tense tensely. As I noted firsthand for a year where Ted was GM and Mike was relegated to coach. And I was kind of the in between, you know, kind of relaying between the two of them. I was a tough time. But. You know, it was only matter of time where might Ted dismissed, Mike. Brought in another Mike may McCarthy. Yeah. What about what's going on in Minnesota and draw thought that was pretty interesting as well where on Tuesday after they lost on Monday night football. The Vikings fired a very well thought of offense coordinator in John D Filipa? Yeah. And you know, if the public you, and I and everyone else had heard about something like friction between de Filippo and head coach Mike Zimmer. And they're talking about it on television. Good god. How bad must've be because usually those things never get out until the the separation happened. And this is odd to me, and, you know, just even body language. You know, they're standing on the sideline, but you never see those two talking. So I just I'm not surprised we can blame it on lack of running. We can blame it on cousins performance. But to me it's all about trust and relationship with coaching staffs, and you got a sense, they don't particularly like each other or each other's philosophies, and whether it was deep..

"Five past the hour is our number three. This Sean Reggie McKenzie's tenure as GM of the Oakland Raiders has come to an end after six years in those six years. The raiders went thirty nine and seventy and. If you didn't think this was all John gruden's team and for ten million dollars a year over ten years. I. I'm pretty sur certain most of us new that this was John gruden's team. But getting Reggie McKenzie out kind of just gets that last guy out that maybe would have been somewhat of a dissenting voice against Jon Gruden. So McKenzie's out gruden's got full power. I mean, Mark Davis probably takes his cues except for his hairstyle from Jon Gruden. And it's funny because regiment, you is the two thousand and sixteen NFL executive of the year. Remember, the raiders two thousand sixteen with what was that Jack del Rio they went twelve and four something like that. Derek Carr, broke his leg or whatever. It was in that final regular season game and kind of destroyed any hope for them in the postseason. But that was a good raiders team. Mckenzie's claim to fame is the two thousand fourteen draft where he drafted Derek Khalil Mack. In the first round Derek Carr in the second round added a couple of other pieces, but overall his drafts were atrocious. Not a lot of the guys on the raiders team are Reggie McKenzie. Guys. I mean, it's bad. He got Gabe Jackson that two thousand fourteen draft. And it's interesting because you shouldn't be surprised that Reggie McKenzie. Got fired. You shouldn't be surprised. The other part about it is. Do you want Jon Gruden having alternate control? I don't understand this Shawna. Maybe you can answer this because I certainly can't figure this out. What Jon Gruden do in Tampa Bay? That shows Mark gave is impossibly others that he's capable of being the player personnel guy. Right. Like, he's a guy that's capable of judging talent and being a defacto GM and probably having like final say when it comes to a draft like because he ran the stupid ESPN quarterback things. We'd sit down to the quarterback go over film, then he'd like shoot questions at them like what exactly Jon Gruden due to where people think that he's somehow qualified to be given this type of responsibility. I don't get this. It doesn't make it out. Rich gannon. Right. Exactly. Maybe. Yeah. What else would it be right? You're getting think about it. I don't understand why anybody would believe that he is capable of making these calls. I mean, I guess the impression that the game is passed the by. You're right nine years out of it. Offense. And what's funny is this Sean interesting people say Mike McCarthy the game passed him by he was still in the game. Right, right. He was in the game of people felt that offensively. It's passed him by heck? Jon Gruden but now the league nine years. And I do think it's passed by because I don't think he connects with the players either. By the way, I think he still living under this. Chucky that whole routine he had and I think he feels that to a point you can be a hard ass, and that'll work today's players don't really, especially you don't have the Bill bell. Check five rings. I don't think players are gonna look at you. And be like, oh, yeah. Well, I'm gonna listen to you and you being a hard ass because you want a Super Bowl two thousand and two of Tampa Bay at sixteen years ago, the guys on that team were like ten years old. They barely remember Jon Gruden coaching that two thousand and two team to a Super Bowl. I agree with you. I think it has passed him by to where I think that Jon Gruden at this point who's got another nine years in ninety million dollars left on a contract. I wouldn't be giving him more power. I'd be bringing in somebody that actually kind of understands players today. And potentially is a guy who GM wise can judge some talent. Reggie mckenzie. Wasn't the answer. I have no problem with him getting like go. I just don't understand. Why Jon Gruden seems to be kind of consolidating all this power. Doesn't make announce a sense to me the guys. He's really that. Great of coach. He is twelve we forget he twelve and four that first year in Tampa Bay right wins the Super Bowl. Then he seven and nine five and eleven goes eleven and five loses in the wildcard round then four and twelve nine and seven loses in the wildcard round in seven to the giants. And then nine and seven and two thousand eight hundred fifty seven and fifty five in Tampa Bay fifty seven and fifty five. And that somehow great the best thing to happen to Jon Gruden Sean was the long layoff because people start to romanticize the resume of Jon Gruden right? He was five and four in the playoffs won one Super Bowl never developed a quarterback per se, but somehow in the nine years that he's away from being on the sideline. We've now romanticize Jon Gruden to being this great coach with a great resume who's a great judge of talent. Which by the way in two thousand eight when he got fired no one would've ever thought, they be saying great coach great town of value evaluator and great resume, correct? Yes. Correct. I agree. I agree with you amazing. So maybe the layoff was good for him. But I do believe the game has passed him by no question. So Reggie Kenzi is out. He has done. And he will no longer be the general manager of the raiders. No surprise there. How about this? Do you see this one lady on bell? I understand. He's bitter. Right. But aren't these like teammates on Pittsburgh, his friends? We know he's sitting out the season. He's not going to play GIO. What he did Sean he on Instagram? He quote liked a post from a teams official from the team's official account sharing the score of their loss to the raiders. How about that? Yes. I did see that. He liked it. It's so funny because you see this, you know, from the Steelers official Instagram page, and it says it shows number sixty sixty offensive lineman says twenty four twenty one and it's liked by lady on bell and fifty four thousand five hundred eighty nine others ten thousand calls on bell, obviously the Steelers Instagram account does. So his name will show up like that. That's great. That's great. Did he think he was at a blend in did? He think he's going to blend new four thousand and change. Boy. Incredible. Was he thinking like, what are you doing labianca? And you don't wanna think other teams look at this. I think teams will look and be like well. We're gonna pay this guy seventeen million bucks with a guaranteed like fifty million dollars to this guy and a doesn't play the whole year of bees doing little petty things like that. You know, I just kind of wonder, Sean, that's a bad. Look, isn't it? Yeah. His talents speaks for itself. And someone's going to give them a lot of money. Check to the bills are both. The jets the jets. It's like I'm like, yeah. You know what? Nine now, unless oh, wait, wait. I shouldn't say that. If Todd Bowles wins out seven and nine eight you might be back. He's not back any Todd. How about the the GM? I think McCain. Do you want him back? You want to blow up the coach energy. You see I think he got blown both out. And here's why because. Mcalinden seat has gotten hot. I mean, he hasn't drafted very well. His second round pick for the most part stink Christian hackenberg. Devon smith. Those guys are second round picks. I like, Marcus, man. He's not exactly great. No. You did play well this year. But now he's out four games with the substance abuse performance enhancing drugs. You know, he's never gotten Leonard Williams help on the defensive. I think Jamal Adams is an absolute stud. I think he's an absolute he's the one player on the team. That's yeah. He he's legit darnold. Juries darnold. I think look you watch that game. I watch a game was Allen. I Arnold one of potentially many. You see the, you know, what drives people mad about Darnell that idiotic interception. He threw but right. Then you see the white people. Get excited with darnold throws at beautiful thirty seven yard pass. Right over the shoulder. Only wear Robbie Anderson can catch it. Then he's rolling around in the pocket and finds Anderson for the game winning touchdown. So you see the parts where you're like. Okay. I see why people think that it could be a pretty darn good quarterback. But you know, people don't give him credit for enough mcadoo. Not giving Ryan Fitzpatrick a big extension after his year in twenty fifteen. Yeah. That's right. Gives him enough credit for that. House of flags. Exactly. Yes. He got real for that member. He got absolutely ripped for that. And then people blame I think the jets be bad because they waited so long to bring him back, but they finally choice. But I think now hindsight, you know, now that time has passed and we've seen Ryan Fitzpatrick in other spots. I think he made the right call. Yeah. But here's the problem that poor season on on waiting too long to sign. No. I just think Fitzpatrick says, Patrick that's what it was. Yeah. Yeah. But here's the thing though, Sean you bring the and back you have to let him pick the coach, right? I mean, that's the way it should be done. Remember the way the jet system was they brought mcalinden and Todd Bowles in together. And they both answer to ownership. Rather than bowls answering mcalinden answering to ownership. That's not a good system. And I think if you bring the cabinet back, and I do believe he's coming back. You have to allow me to pick the coach and have the coach of him. And if you do that, do you get a good coach because if you're a Lincoln Riley or somebody may be like wait this GM's on a hot seat in a year from now if he's out our ni- out as well. So do I take that job? That's one and two. If you bring in a canyon, and let him pick the coach don't you pretty much have to let him stay another couple of years instead of just one year. No. Tie into that. Coach. You blow both out. See I would. Yeah. I'll give him a chance to hire coach. So they have to give it another three years. At least why not you're not willing to do that. Draftsman that poor. We wouldn't trust them for another three years. Yes. Here's the problem. The jets are four nine and say they're gonna end up five and eleven. They are in a great position right now to turn it around fairly quickly. And here's why. If darnold makes the progression and growth that we expect from him. He should be pretty decent next year in years to come. And if that's the case mcalinden deserves the credit for that. Because he's the one who traded up for him. Trumped everybody on Valentine's Day and made that trade upright people thought he overpaid giving those three second round picks right now. Don't forget the great trade was Sheldon Richardson to Seattle for Germain curse and a second which allowed him then to go and make that deal because he had that other second. But the right, and that was a brilliant move. But the thing is the jets have about one hundred million dollars in capital on the jets will have a pretty high draft pick this year can mcalinden spend that money wisely. Kenny draft Wisey with another high pick toward the jets go from five and eleven to legitimately nine and seven ten and six because they can really add a bunch of talent.

"He's a relic of the past. But someone who believe may have things that can apply counteract what's going on in the NFL. Now, we're gonna hand. Him the keys. Jon Gruden again talking about wishing Reggie McKenzie luck going forward. So like the wish Reggie McKenzie the best, and he's a good friend of mine is always going to be a raider. And we're gonna have to rebuild this football team without him. But I will sure the raider fans, we'll do everything we can to find the right replacement. He left some big shoes to fill and it's one wish him to best. And it's amazing. This actually makes me think of an appreciate even more this idea that LeBron James and Dwayne Wade states such good friends because imagine if someone just decided, you know, what I don't wanna be in this partnership with you anymore in this case, it's Jon Gruden and the raiders sending Reggie McKenzie out. But in the Brian James, Dwayne Wade case, it was Joe LeBron James saying, you know, what don't want to be here anymore might not be your fault do. Anyway, it's Pacific. Maybe that softens the blow some the fact that that was more LeBron James and management not necessarily seeing. I'd I at that point. But still to have that sort of break-up and still remain as close as they are is incredible. If we see Reggie McKenzie Jon Gruden fishing this off season. We'll know they worked it out and similar level. But again, this is all about what he wants to do. And right now, it seems like it's an accepted reality. I wonder how long and what needs to happen for the raiders not to question that in the next few years like this idea of a ten year. Horizon sounds great in theory and understand you have the move. But man, we see nowhere in sports right now. Are you giving something like that outside of maybe in excuse me? Cincinnati again, the Marvin Lewis outlier. Most other situations of success is not immediate. And the turnaround is not felt sooner than later. You don't really get this time period. But the raiders made this decision ESPN zone, Adam Schefter. I think this is something that everybody expected to be coming. They expected it to becoming at the end of the year now with three weeks left in the season. This is Jon Gruden show in Oakland. He's running at the way that he wants to run it. And essentially, even though he respected reg MacKenzie. This gruden's ship and he hits steer it. And it should be noted that logistically people probably asking why this would happen with Reggie McKenzie. Now, I heard floated he was given the option to stay on towards to the end of the season declined that for obvious reasons. But as far as the logistics of y now in this situation, the raiders and the scouting department of the personnel. There are getting ready to I'm sure pretty quickly get together for meetings starting to plan for the NFL draft in this spring. And if you're not going to have Reggie McKenzie around then to make the decisions, it would make no sense to keep him around now to be involved in that to have that going on around where you're not actively searching and taking input and looking for the leadership that defense going to be at the helm in that situation. So again, we we look at this situation. And it just seems so amazing how willing Mark Davis and company were to gamble on Jon Gruden to say that we trust this guy who's been out of football as long as Jon Gruden has. We trust his football -bility, not just as a coach because you can look at other instances where people are asked to come back, and they're asked to fill one particular role. And I look at another coach left here in her Edwards, and what's gone on at the Arizona state, sun devil recently..

"Green jerseys. I feel like those are popular jerseys slander, and I think they're great. As a pretty strong fan of the now, deceased color rush Thursday. Seeing instances of pop up in other places in the NFL. Always brings me great joy. And last night. Really? You could argue that the Seahawks in the Vikings have two of the better if not be to best color Ross uniforms when they come to play with there's the Vikings at the purple people eaters and the action green that's become somewhat of a thing of legend in Seattle. Realized people didn't like those c-. It's okay for you. Not like the game last night. Even the final score is kind of misleading because it makes you think that game was kinda good twenty one to seven almost seems like a normal football score. But it was basically a six nothing game until like five minutes left in the fourth quarter game garbage last night. There's a bad football game last night. You can try excuse away. All you on. Fans. Yeah. You just you're just lying yourself. If watching Russell Wilson throw for seventy yards is your idea of fun. You're a sick person and you need help. And I want to give you that help. And it's just the only prescription for that is to go on the internet and watch Patrick Mahomes. Throwing no look pass a thousand times in a row on a loop. Until you understand what's good for you. And what is not? Right now time for straight talk. Brought to you by straight talk wireless. Best phones. Best networks, no contracts. Apparently, what was good for the raiders was firing Reggie McKenzie yesterday. So Reggie McKenzie. The raiders GM the two thousand sixteen executive of the year. He's been informed that he will no longer be a member of the raiders organization. The team put out a statement. That said we are grateful for everything Reggie is done for this organization as a player executive and member of the raider family will immediately begin a search for a new front office executive, and we'll have no further comment until that process is complete. And as soon as this happens, I feel like we all just went back to doing what we do with the raiders. And doing exactly what the raiders want us to do which is staring longingly Jon Gruden wondering what's going to happen next. Like this has been made abundantly clear. This is Jon Gruden show you pay Jon Gruden ten million dollars a year for the next ten years. And basically decided he is the only thing that matters. He is your son in your moon at this point, if you are the raiders during this move, it's not going to be about because we thought bringing a guy like marshawn Lynch back helped them with the transition have a player in a familiar face that this franchise can rally around. And that that fan base in Oakland, specifically might soften their distaste a little bit for this team leaving them high and dry for Las Vegas. No. It has all changed to be about Jon Gruden now. And denying that would be a fool's errand. And so when Jon Gruden stands up yesterday the way he did sort of mimics what I assume would be the human emotion of surprise. You can imagine I'm not overly receptive to this idea. Here was Jon Gruden the raiders head coach ins are on the firing and his surprise of this news. This is all you know, somewhat surprising. There have been a lot of speculation rumor coming out of here since early in the season. You don't know what's real what smoke? What's fire? You really don't. But we have made a change, and we have to respond and that we will. I last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Even that phrase is contradictory. There had been a lot of rumors coming out of here about this particular thing happening for a long time. I am surprised that this particular thing has finally come through and happened. What? No. Don't spit in my face and tell me it's raining like we all knew this was a possibility. And we're at the point in every break-up now where everyone talks glowingly about the other side. And Reggie McKenzie. Says there was nothing wrong with me and John gruden's relationship Jon Gruden says I'm surprised by this. And there's nothing wrong with our relationship. There was something wrong enough to where like anyone else who has stood in opposition to Jon Gruden or is at least not stood in. It's it's basically are you with Jon Gruden and just like you enough to want you around because if not they'll show anyone the door. This is just a continued reminder. They asked Reggie McKenzie around the trade deadline if anyone was untouchable, and he joked and said, I'm untouchable, and man that is a quote that. I wish I'm sure he wishes he could have back at this point. Like that one is going to get brought up a lot today. But we've seen it over and over again like Khalil Mack Amari Cooper. What if that if that didn't send you a signal enough that anyone not named Jon Gruden was expendable in this raiders experiment for this year? You probably been asleep at the wheel for a little bit. Maybe you just got uncrowded genetically frozen and are looking around wondering what the hell's going on in Oakland y two of their best players are now bowling hard as hell for two other teams at this point in time. You need to look no further than who is at the helm right there and the price tag associated with him. And that is a gamble in its own, right? Like the last time I feel like we saw someone with this much control or even flirting with this much control and an organization that hadn't been there for a long time. We were talking about chip Kelly in those eagles teams were for a few years you operate in that role of coaching GM and got to pick the groceries and all these things, and you gambled on a guy that was a bit of a new wave experiment in the NFL. And this is the sort of other version of that the pendulum swinging back in the other direction saying Jon Gruden. He's a relic of the past. But someone who we believe may have things that can apply or counteract what's going on in the NFL. Now, we're going to hand him the keys. Jon Gruden again talking about wishing Reggie McKenzie. Luck going forward. It's like the wish Reggie McKenzie. The best and he's a good friend of mine is always going to be a raider and run out to rebuild this football team without him. But I will share the raider fans, and we'll do everything we can to find the right replacement. He left some big shoes to fill and it's one wish. The best. And it's amazing. This actually makes me think of an appreciate even more this idea that LeBron James and Dwayne Wade states such good friends because imagine if someone just decided, you know, what I want to be in this partnership with you anymore in this case, it's Jon Gruden and the raiders sending Reggie McKenzie out. But in the Brian James, Dwayne Wade's case, it was Joe LeBron James saying, you know, what don't wanna be here anymore. Might not be your fault. Dwayne Wade specifically maybe that softens the blow some the fact that that was more LeBron James and management not necessarily seeing eye to eye at that point. But still to have that sort of break up and still remain as close as they are is incredible. If we see Reggie McKenzie, and Jon Gruden fishing this offseason will know they worked it out and a similar level. Are you giving something like that outside of maybe in in excuse me? Cincinnati again, the Marvin Lewis outlier. Most other situations of success is not immediate. And the turnaround is not felt sooner than later. You don't really get this time period. But the raiders made this decision ESPN zone, Adam Schefter. I think this is something that everybody expected to be coming. They expected it to becoming at the end of the year now with three weeks left in the season. This is Jon Gruden show in Oakland. He's running it the way that he wants to run it. And essentially, even though he respected regimen. Kenzi this is gruden's ship and he gets to steer it. And it should be noted that logistically people will probably asking why this would happen with Reggie McKenzie. Now, I heard it floated he was given the option to stay on towards to the end of the season declined that for obvious reasons. But as far as logistics of a why now in this situation, the raiders and the scouting department and the personnel. There are getting ready to I'm sure pretty quickly. Get together for meetings starting to plan for the NFL draft in this spring. And if you're not going to have Reggie McKenzie around then to make the decisions, it would make no sense to keep him around now to be involved in that to have that going on around while you're not actively searching and taking input and looking for the leadership eventually going to be at the helm in that situation. So again, we we look at this situation. And it just seems so amazing how willing Mark Davis and company were to gamble on Jon Gruden to say that we trust this guy who has been out of football as long as Jon Gruden has. We trust his football. Not just as a coach because you can look at other instances where people are asked to come back, and they're asked to fill one particular role. And I look at another coach left here in Herm Edwards, and what's going on at years state, Sunday levels, recently, and the way they got there and said we're going to silo off all of these jobs enroll we're going to treat this like an NFL front office where everyone's got their responsibility. And it's a lot easier when you've got one responsibility. And when you've got a responsibility of the thing that you've done which is go out there and coach. But now all of a sudden when your ass clearly to be a part of these other decisions in a way that has merited this kind of response where everything that is not something that you want or that you deem necessary. Or part of the future is gone. That's a level of control that is rarely seen and it's afforded to a guy again, it's not afforded to Bill Belichick who's been around the same organization and has worked his way through that is seated immediate control the Jon Gruden at the beginning of this process. And I'm just sitting around wondering when this bites them because it seems like too much too soon for a team that's going to go through as much changes..

"Don't spit in my face and tell me it's raining like we all knew this was a possibility, and we're at the point in every break up now where everyone talks glowingly about the other side. Reggie mckenzie. Says there was nothing wrong with me and John gruden's relationship and Jon Gruden says I'm surprised by this. And there was nothing wrong with our relationship. There was something wrong enough to where like anyone else who has stood in opposition to Jon Gruden or is at least not stood in. It's basically are you with Jon Gruden and does he like you enough to want you around because if not they'll show anyone the door. This is just a continued reminder. They asked Reggie McKenzie around the trade deadline if anyone was untouchable, and he joked and said, I'm on touchable. And man that is a quote that I'm wishing I'm sure he wishes he could have back at this point. Like that one is going to get brought up a lot today. But we've seen it over and over again like Khalil Mack Amari Cooper. What if that if that didn't send you a signal enough that anyone not named Jon Gruden was expendable in this raiders experiment for this year? You've probably been asleep at the wheel for a little bit. Maybe you just got uncrowded genetically frozen are looking around wondering what the hell's going on in Oakland. Why two of their best players are now bowling hard as hell for two other teams at this point in time. You need to look no further than who is at the helm right there and the price tag associated with him. And that is a gamble in its own, right? Like the last time I feel like we saw someone with this much control or even flirting with this much control in an organization that hadn't been there for a long time. We were talking about chip Kelly in those eagles teams were for a few years you operate in that role of coach and GM and got to pick the groceries and all these things, and you gambled on a guy that was a bit of a new wave experiment in the NFL. It's like the wish Reggie McKenzie the best, and he's a good friend of mine is always going to be a raider. And we're gonna have to rebuild this football team without him. But I will share the raider fans. It will do everything we can to find the right replacement. He left some big shoes to fill and it's one of the best. And it's amazing. "What that means? Right. I do. Yes. Well, there is breaking news any NFL. We talked about this. How long would it take for this to happen? But I'll give you a GM has been fired which one do you think it is? Oh, I got I got it's gotta be Reggie McKenzie. You are correct. The raiders have fired Reggie McKenzie. We wonder how long after a victory. Why why are you going to say Okay. now? Now you beat a team. You weren't supposed to be you go out. He's plans are no good. Why? Now, I mean why look to your point after a victory that's week fourteen. They've played they got three games left. Well, according to the NFL network. The McKenzie was given the option to stay the rest of the season but decided to walk away now. And so it makes a little bit more sense. But he Gruden came in firing him, and he had a eye on him from the as soon as he said, they haven't done well in the draft, historically, you knew what was going to happen. So, you know, Reggie's not gonna last long on the free agent market. Yeah. Because people saw what he did before Gruden and they're going to remember that. And they're going to want to have that Jon Gruden is shameless, man. He really is that he came in. And and has done what he's done to this team. And look, and there are no misconception that the raiders were going to win the Super Bowl this year. Probably even be a playoff team. But that he came in and told a bunch of lies about Khalil Mack. We're trying to get it done and no intention of bringing Khalil Mack back. Then he does the same thing with Amari Cooper. And he's down the road to Dallas. And now you've got Reggie McKenzie Saudis throwing shade on a bunch of guys this year bottom this whole team out. I mean, I get it that you need to get bad before you can get good. But this is an aggressive play. Yeah. But they weren't bad. They were already good. They were. Yeah. He went. He went good. I'm a make you bad. So I can make you good again. That's not grund it why. Because I want the good to say gruden's good and not McKenzie's good. I wanted to say group is good. And that del Rio's good. I mean, I guess right. Billboard like you. I don't know what the plan is. I mean, the the plan is not to win. If you're Jon Gruden the plan is to win my way and my way exclusively. Yes, it there is no half-measure. There is no I'm going to keep this guy. Because I if John gruden's comes in, and it's not like the raiders were going to the Super Bowl. They were. Okay. Jon Gruden shows up and tastes Khalil Mack, and Amari Cooper, and all of these guys and turns them into a playoff team Asian champion. And makes you maybe wins a playoff game start. He'll get would've gotten the credit for that absolute. I wonder though, if Amari Cooper is good game also facilitated that. We used to have that clue max joined this and Cooper's doing that. Why Raja's always kind of been kidding about the Amari Cooper, d you know, don't give up a first round pick. Well, look one that pick is a lot lower than anybody thought. It was going to be the Khalil Mack. Pick is going to be a lot lower than anybody. I mean, these were picks Dallas in Chicago when they made those deals with both of those teams playing the way they were. And again Chicago deal was done before the season. But we didn't know what the bears are going to look like there was a possibility and not even a remote one. But possible one that all three of those picks are going to land in the top ten namely the raiders in their own pick. And then the bears pick and the Dallas pick the raiders pick will be in the top ten talk five, right? The Dallas pick will be in the mid to late twenties. And the Chicago pick is going to be in the mid to late twenties. Yeah. What did he get? He gave up the best pass rusher in football. Arguably he gave up a playmaking wide receiver for late first round picks. Well, not getting better players than those guys..
What youll get with Warriors hall pass
"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. What you'll get with warriors hall pass. What if every pro and college team in the bay area puts donation boxes at the entrances giving every fan the chance to drop in one dollar for fire relief, no way, this would happen. But if the raiders had the chats, how fast would they trade Derek Carr straight up for Jimmy Garoppolo all anybody really wanted from car last week was a my bad a simple admission that he made a huge mistake by grounding a pass on that fourth and fifth play late against the chargers. He had to at least lofta floaty in the general direction of anyone in raiders gear. Everybody knows that was a mistake. Almost everybody genius. Bruce Jenkins idea of holding the NBA all star game team choosing just before the game at the arena. Such brilliant thinking by Jenkins is not surprising. I'm pretty sure he invented the twenty four second clock. Small suggestion to augment Jenkins idea paint the court to look like cracked blacktop. Hey raiders. You know? Okay. Is going to sue you. So why wait make plans now to play all your home games next season in London? You won't have to deal with the Hayden apathy. You would be sure to experience in Oakland. And every week you'll play an opponent throw enough kilter by the time change and travel. Once again, the NBA is light years ahead of other pro leagues in moving toward gender equality in hiring officials just as they were and are in hiring minority coaches the league signed two more female refs. And now three the NBA summer league featured several female refs, if you wanna work toward fairness, you have to work toward fairness, speaking of a quality, how can President Trump award Babe Ruth medal of freedom and not give one to satchel page page at a similar stature and cultural impact though, much of it was lost on white America. It should be noted that Davis was responding to a question about the raiders long run of failure not to a query about haircuts. Davis also said of he and general manager Reggie McKenzie. We've gotta look in the mirror and figure out where the hell did we go wrong in trying to build this thing? So in the search for solutions to the teams deep problems an important tool will be mirrors and maybe smoke.

"He kind of a snake? Can we trust what he says? Because everything he says he gets after he sends Reggie McKenzie down to talk to the media after Amari Cooper was traded. In Reggie went on all these tangents about you know, I love the value. I had to do it baba. Reggie the man on the moon knows. You have no power or poll in this whole thing. John gruden's running it, and then clearly John went right up to his office and got on the phone or text back. Chris Mortensen said we are trading. No more players and then Wednesday when he was asked. Well, you know, I don't think we're trading anymore players. But things change is that really what I said. Yeah. John. That's what you said. I'm starting to see why all those players thought Gruden was kind of a fraud. Not because he doesn't know Xs knows and schemes he can run spider to y banana till the cows come home, and I'm you know, say that kind of jokingly like, I think he understands at a very high level NFL office, but being football coach is about so much more than that like. People everyone in the building has a huge amount of respect for Bill Belichick, his resume, you know, speaks for itself. But every player knows like he's going to tell you like it. He's any knows everything about football. Like, there's half the players and grooms building the goes, John. You don't know anything about Defense, John? You're not calling the special teams. Then there is also everyone in the building going God is this guy going to trade me like when the defensive players walk into the Kansas City Chiefs building, they know Andy's not calling the defense or you know, it was going to worry necessarily about like specific schemes specific play calls in a given game. So they could you know, and this happens in any, you know, football organization college pro where the head coach typically is an offensive defensive guy. So the other players. No that that guy spending more time with offense, especially when the head coach is an offensive coordinator on that given team. But if you carry yourself in respect these guys like humans, and again, I'm pro trading players. I am pro treating this like a business, but you're still dealing with humans. There has to be some human element to all this. It's why Andy Reid is had so much success for the last twenty years because there's a human element to him clearly with Bill Belichick. I don't even think Nick saving. It's enough credit for you, see some Bill Parcells former players talk about the relationship. They had with them though. It was tough the thing with Gruden. I think that's I been floored. And again, we're so for removed to the last time he coached in the society, we live in and I'm just as. You know, I'm as bad as this at anyone in terms of DHA living in the moment. You know, not quite realizing what happened ten fifteen twenty years ago. Whatever I mean, it's just the nature of the way we consume information, but I think this Gruden experienced. So for giving him basically ultimate power has brought into light like what a complete failure. And how truly ugly. It got at the end in Tampa Bay because you were hired because of three guys Amari Cooper, Derek Carr in Khalil Mack, two are gone and one guy is getting worse. And I kind of think he could get traded in the next five or six days. So this grew experiment. He is a boss that treats people poorly, and now has a resume of not having that much success. Who's not really personable guy? His. Players are clearly starting not trust them. Like again, you can act that way. But you better have a resume or have somewhat developed personal relationships because I've said this all along whenever I see a story on you know, the coaches just trying he's reading a book about millennials. You don't get people. Like, I'm sorry. Bill Belichick doesn't have to read a book about millennials. He just gets them. Gregg Popovich doesn't have to read a book about millennials. He just gets people..

"Gruden is available. Mark, Mark Davis would trade Reggie McKenzie for the right price like every guys available. If I'm the giants, I would think about because they're not going to be in the business of drafting a rookie. We just saw that last year. They could have had Sam darnold. They said, no. Now I think now they know, Eli sucks, but that doesn't change their minds. They're not gonna want a rookie quarterback because they're going to say if we can get somewhat of a veteran guy in here, we have the roster and players around him that we could. In theory compete if we got, let's say, Derek Carr, like Derek Carr with Oto Beckham sterling Shepard Ingram and saquon Barkley and we draft, you know, a couple offense of lime, maybe sign another one in free agency. We got some gone, so I'm them. I'd offer right now. Probably twos and it'd be worth the risk not giving up my first round pick. I just can't. In Derek's not worth that, but at risk a couple twos, you know, because you can't function with this year's going to keep losing games. You're going to keep being a laughing stock and you're going to waste a generational wide receiver. Every game that you play with Eli, you're wasting saquon Barkley and evening room. Like I don't care as much about defense anymore. The rules are not on for the eighty five bears or the two thousand thirteen. Seattle Seahawks. The game has changed adapter die like you can function with Derek. You can be a competitive team with Derek Carr. If somehow you got teddy Bridgewater, but you will use just wasting games with this season. Like I'd trade for Derek tomorrow. I really would or if you're listening this on Tuesday today, I get him in here for next week. Like what are you waiting for? Like, this is a joke. You can't roll and you have players around when Gruden is throwing up the white flag. He's over it like he doesn't want any of these players. He won. It's all gone. Now. Some of them might cost a little more, but I do think that you could get Derek for less than a first round pick and just because I can't see any teams offering a first round pick for car, but man, the giants, the two point conversion tobacco, the Eli Devakul what a just train wreck of a franchise right now..

And there it is needed to be the guy taking the side of poor, Reggie McKenzie arable. He also started that argument with. I don't even disagree with, right. No, no, I like the move but get up there and tell the truth and just an own it and the truth according to God's is the Jon Gruden deems Khalil Mack, no nuance whatsoever. Not good enough to play for the raiders. It's a great move. I mean, listen, but you know what? How do you sit there and preach leadership and accountability to your players and then big, press conference. You shrink up and blame it on Reggie McKenzie. How do you do that? Say the players must be looking at? I'm like, this is who is this guy? I don't respect him getting lost the locker. No. Finally finishes at the finish line bet particular marathon with his favourite finishing push, which is he's lost the locker room. Do you think Derek cars looking at Groote in the same way today? He did a couple of days ago..

"You know, you get mad at me for putting my feet up on the desk. Same thing. He used to get mad. He he's not interested and he's not even dude. I've been listening to you for the last three months. Talk about the same stuff. Look, you know, even if he's been around it ki- it doesn't mean that he's changed. You know what I mean? Like no extra saying, I hope that is all it is, is that he hasn't. There's putting into this way. There's a lot more evidence that he hasn't been there is that he's altered his approach. The what he's doing now is really similar to what he was doing before, and there really aren't too many things that lead you to believe like, okay, spending ten years, observing and meeting with teams as opposed to being a head coach, maybe you kind of alter your I, it's dick for meal when he was gone for a while. He came back and he was a different guy. He had a different approach because he set out and he did college football disapproves the. So he's able to see how the Leon changed a little bit same. He feels like he the brought the same guy back again. Well, if he's brought the same guy back again, he's gonna get fire. Okay. Because then they won't win. They won't win. He's going. I don't care if they gave one hundred million in that that he's going to get fired at some point because the raiders are not going to sit around and become the laughing stock of the league like the Cleveland Browns. At some point, you've got to win football games and you can't continue to alienate your players. It certainly seems like the same guy to me when when I look at it, I'm trying to be soft with it. But when Reggie McKenzie who's done such terrific job at building the roster, all of a sudden is somewhat in the league circles. People are saying he's being phased out of certain decisions. He was like, this is the same sort of behavior that went on. We're rich McKay in Tampa Bay Buccaneers when we were down there. All of a sudden. John grooten is running the show because we won the Super Bowl. Now he, you know, we got the keys to the kingdom minute was the funniest thing ever. So we're on the podium. You know, enrich has got the the Super Bowl trophy with our family. He snatches it like like, basically, give me that get outta here. This is my, you know. And at that point you knew, you know? Yeah, this thing. Last rich. Well, you mentioned that they can't turn into the Cleveland Browns. They were the Cleveland Browns for a long time. They went through ten years where they were terrible, and it was only after that reg MacKenzie did get his hands on it that they started to come back up. To the Cleveland and and but now all of a sudden Mark Davis gives Jon Gruden this huge deal. They're getting into a staring contest with Khalil Mack. That doesn't seem to be benefiting anybody that give Jon Gruden all this power. He's running off Crabtree and king and he's alienating MAC, and it feels like they're, they're making a u-turn back to where they were at the end of the Al Davis years, which was nowhere just they were the Cleveland Browns. I Jon Gruden doesn't feel like the next step forward. It feels like three steps back. What are you staring at this grandmother. Oh, this Oprah. Cobra tended to To you you. in Australia. That's Austrailia. They do things different over there. Yeah, we had snake pretty well their grandmother. So anyway. Anyway, a used to show for it. Yeah. On that note, I, I got nothing for you right there. So Aaron, Donald deal, not done, but it feels like it's getting close because the Rams are shuffling around get into that next. It's the morning show Keyshawn and Travis ESPN LA..

"And that's what I'm going with. I don't know what has transpired as far as communications between Jon Gruden and Khalil Mack, but I don't need you to come to my doorstep. I don't expect him to go to the extreme, but at least let it be known that I have reached out to Khalil Mack. I have let him know how important he is to this team. He has a c. on his chest for a reason. Forget the potential of NFL defensive player of the year candidate like he is your captain a team, captain. A leader on that team on that defense in the reports are there has been no relationship. There's been no communication. That's just a bad look as a head coach coming in with this buzz from the fans, the media, the expectations, all of that, and you haven't communicated to your best player. I have a problem with that communications a two way street. Now it is. It is, but I, my expert, I guarantee their car didn't have to reach out by the way. Listen to their first three picks were offense players. They really needed defensive help. So. You know, I don't think it's cryptic. I mean, Reggie McKenzie wanted to help the defense gruden's like, no, I want offense. You're kind of sending a message. The defense is second class. You got to hold the Derek Carr. Let's be clear though here Jon Gruden in his original stint with the raiders built a Super Bowl contending team. Soon as they went to the zoo boy after he goes to Tampa Bay and with a great defense and Brad Johnson at quarterback, he won a Super Bowl. He's been successful everywhere. He's been some of the hype about him has been the golden touch. He seems to have. It's not all just coming out of his mouth and he is full of bluster and says some things to hype himself. There's no question, but he has produced results and he has produced great results with defensive players. I can't. I don't think he's got amnesia. I think he knows you gotta have the Derrick Brooks of the warrants apps. The John Lynch is to have success. I think he's got a no. He needs Khalil Mack. Of course, you knew it's thirty two teams in the league, the needs Khalil Mack. The problem is that you have to go beyond beyond what you would do as a head coach. You have the power, you're going to be here for a long time. You can make things happen. You can find a way to get in front of Khalil Mack Khalil Mack get in front of you how, however, that works. If you haven't even make communication to me, it sounds like, okay, we're gonna go out to office out of the ball. I'm gonna make myself in this offense looked good and whatever happens on a defense out of the ball habits. That's how I'm looking at. If you don't reach out to find a way, I just don't see Khalil Mack play hard ball with the head goes, maybe what the organization but not playing hardball with John Gruber memory is that they tried to go basically all offense for a couple of years with their car and the defense kept leading them down. I, I can't believe Gruden is this stupid that he's watched the raiders whipped their cars score points and not be able to. It's I don't think it's stupid. I think his brand is offense. And if John fails, he doesn't want to also crushes brand John wants to build the by the way Pete Carroll at both USC in Seattle, the offensive line's gone into the tank. Why? Because Pete's brand is defense. He's always going to take care of the defense, so it looks good for his brand. See, I buy that because when you're offensive or defensive minded coach head coach at that, you tend to and you know this, you can speak to this. You tend to stay on one side of the ball and make sure that your side of the ball isn't the reason why we're not successful. Thank you. That's that's important to offensive and defensive line coach, I saw with dick ver- meal when he basically got one out of Saint Louis for Mike Martz, he came over to Kansas City and he built an offense because he wanted to prove he could do it with my mart. I just don't see this with Jon Gruden because as much as he's known for offense, his brand is really about winning..
Oakland finds smack-talking, kindred spirit in Jon Gruden
"The hook and if they finish at fourteen maybe that's what you do because your position to draft one of the top quarterbacks coming out next season steve why should the nfl network reporter and analyst for the nfl network at eighty nine on twitter here on sports talk haven't talked to him in forever so i wanna go back to the draft steve if you will i know that seems like ancient history but were you shocked as i was baker mayfield with number one did a browns and the browns doing brown things it's weird because i was with cleveland during the draft and going in i thought for sure be darnold just because he seemed like for more than a year the guy who would be number one the prototype guy and especially after what cleveland has gone through trying to find their franchise quarterback you seem to have the fewest questions about him but in speaking to so many teams in the top seven or eight who just loved baker mayfield when i got to cleveland and really started hearing from inside the building hey don't rely a mayfield you know this isn't like some rulers were throwing out there they didn't surprise me by the time it actually happened you know if you would ask you a moonie i heard that did you go yeah right kind of sort of i i i will say that because i knew he will either he would not get past the jets at three the broncos at five so it was all those teams he would have been there guy so it's kind of like if a guy he's gonna be thought of that highly who doesn't necessarily meet all the physical specs who doesn't necessarily seem like the prototype but everyone you talk should he's got the charisma he's got the drew brees charisma he's got their vigil rubery commitment to learning and and and jerus has got those antennas where there's nothing that gets by him nothing and they heard you heard about baker mayfield once you start listening to more and more people kinda sing that song as opposed to looking at the specs and looking at some of the attitude like okay you know and then there's also the dorsey and alonzo highsmith wall and the people who are now running the browns there by their peers around the league that you know when they started coming out it was like okay the guy feel that way about him then maybe maybe he's the guy you know so i think that was if there was any surprise again by the time the week of the draft got here it was it was it was very much dulled shifting gears to the raiders obviously you mentioned jon gruden going back getting back out of the booth and going back into the coaching sidelines head coach of the oakland raiders do you think that there's a transition period that he's going to have to adjust to being away from the game as long as it has had been trying to sort of especially because he's got so much personnel control you know reggie mckenzie the general manager of jon gruden has is coming there and has really affected that roster i mean look at how many thirty year old plush veterans with tie to either him remember his coach brought in so it's almost as if they're building the team to win the final two years in oakland and then when they moved to las vegas still kind of rewrite the roster then so i think there's gonna absolutely be a transition i thought maybe show interesting.
