"With indifference him outside of the race track, different functions and different things and enjoy my time around a little. Little, bit more than I can count on one hand. How many is when I raised? I would've considered a friend. Right or somebody that I would go do something with outside of the racetrack, and as I got to know everybody better up every driver in that field. I can tell you something positive equality. There's about that. I did not know when I raised with him and I wish I would have known that I. Wish I would have may be handled things a little bit different in terms of getting to know people better, not necessarily being frazzled in the garage, but just getting the norm better. Because there are some great people within our sport when you put the helmet on when you got that racetrack at on. Some very intense people, but when you let that guard down, and you get to know away from racing a little bit, it completely changes and to this day I think one of my favorite things about going to the TV side and get to work on the TV side I. Knew All these teams I've been in all these shops and Ben in most of these hours at some point or another, because I drove for most of them, but it got to the point. Where if you go in one Holler you know when you go to the racetrack, even if your own in for somebody you go to. Stay away from the other holidays you focus on their car, and whatever information they give you or you learn you. Keep that for your own common knowledge, but you don't go in as a as a guy that does as much relief driving as I didn't share that with other people so I would get all this knowledge, and I'd learn all this stuff, but it was all stuff that I keep to myself and teams are always say hey with this. Would that Garfield this car feel like? You know it's like you..

"We ran that race on a Sunday I get a phone call from the team, and it might have been even Monday night, and in case you had done his test, and without I don't i. don't know any details of any of that stuff, but but nonetheless they said Hey, we need you to do another race and we may just go ahead and say we're going to. Have you finished out the season. And I was like she don't. If I can cuss on your house, like son of a gun. I had this all planned up my head. It was the perfect moment. I'm yeah, absolutely I'll do it. No problem so happen and finished out the season, and we go to homestead, and my wife came down and we didn't bring the kids down. It's just you know it's very difficult to travel two little kids, and I wasn't taking a motorhome to the at the time so so she came down and wanted to make sure that she was to be a part of that in When the race starts at pull off pit, road and kind of the same moment, and this one was even a little more I. Don't WanNa say in my brain. It was like you're further down the road in your at the end of the race season on top of things and I'm like okay this this one really likely could be it and you know as I started that race in my hat. I'm like I'm fine with this being the last cup race. You know that were to happen if I. Don't sit in a cup car again I'm okay with that like I'm a piece of that will. We pull off pit road, and the spotters were coming off of turn four. His a radio means slaughter says. They want you to drop to the Apron. They think you might be leaking. Something and I'm like Oh. That's interesting. I wonder what that's all about. Side trump to the apron ride around come into the pits and sure enough. We've got a leak sure enough. We get pushed behind the wall and I'm sitting there. When the green flag flies for I, think it was twenty two laps as we repaired the line that had obtained all in it, and that was leaking, or it wasn't. A pinch could actually had a seal that had a little problem with it. For, whatever reason didn't get picked in previous checks that we did and and everything like that and I'm sitting there for twenty two laughs at the start of what in my head is probably very likely like ninety percent going to be the last cup race ever run. Waiting to go out to start the conference last on, everyone was like you've gotta be kidding me. Suck up there. I run the race. You get the car on the tracks. And it was actually one of the most enjoyable I've ever run because there was just no pressure like I just went out and did my own thing with the car on the racetrack had fun with it and you're twenty two laps, sounds you. You just staying out of the way, and at that point, it's like well. The goal is now. I just WanNa see you know how fast we can run for the rest of this race, but also not affect this race in any way, and it was really enjoyable, but it was also kind of deflating the same time I'm like son of a gun. I you know I just wanted to finally have the last one. Your career is kind of been like that though. that. Hey! You know what else is crazy about that. That is the first time is up and down as my career as journeyman as it's been in..

"As well I mean you have guys like Michael. Waltrip and Kenny Wallace who are already part of the Fox Stanley at the time, and were you know more fulltime on what they were doing with TV? So you still had drivers involve boxes always used the athletes, which I think is really cool records, bracing or NFL, or whatever we can kind of see a trend there, but it just kept growing, and from one thing to another and. I WANNA say two thousand seventeen, doing a little bit more time that year halfway through the year it became obvious that there was going to be a a race that Iowa that they didn't have a up driver to put in the booth, and I think they used the cup drivers that year in the booth with Adam Alexander Mike Waltrip, and I just kind of put hard sell on us, said Hey. I'd love to do that is available man that really cool, so I could go call out our race and I'll make sure that I. don't commit anything on my schedule to race in that. That racist if I could do that and it was at Charlotte before of that year lead and I would I remember talking to a gentleman named Jacob Ullman, who's with Fox and Lindsay Mandate? WHO works in the race up. Studios with US had kind of talked all them as well Steve Craddock..

"Slash Kelly so you are ready for Race Day. Now. Let's get back to Regan Smith. You know that time was interesting, too. Because I think it was the year before you were splitting the car with Martin if I remember correctly so. Yeah when you think about that was it had been unique situation like that were kind of what was it? It was D. I, but there's also again deal, and it was just. It seemed very weird from the outside end, but getting to split a car with Mark Martin. was there anything positive and good that you took away from that experience or I? Think the biggest positive was learning how he drove a race car. Right like that first Bristol Racer and he came up there and test with us, and at the time the reason why mark didn't do. Do the races he didn't do is because it was the what they call the car at the time and you know market decided. He wanted to run the other cars. He didn't WANNA learn the new car, and he was kind of starting retirement, anyways and Gin had this opportunity pop up to where he could do that. He could run a part time schedule, and and they go find another young guy and fill up the schedule of him. so to learn from him from that standpoint to he went, did a couple of tests with this? Ben Mayer Aces to feel you know. He would look for in a car compared to maybe what I would look for in a car and and different things like that was very educational, and you know the first time i. kind of had somebody that I could do that with that was up until that point I was kind of my own and I. I don't want to say I was a loner, but I was. was also the type that was of the mindset of do figure it out. You know and make the mistake and learn from the mistake, and and sometimes that can be good, but sometimes it can be bad I. Think I do regret my career, not talking to the veteran drivers more now understanding more from other drivers, not asking the right questions at at times to build, maybe speed up my learning curve, and and make things faster. Mark in terms of a work ethic, and how he managed himself, and how he did things like that was was certainly one of the most intense guys I think sports ever seen and eat at his way going about his business and doing his job and It was good book. Learn from that. Maybe take some pieces from that, and and maybe not take other pieces from it and just kind of. Of, you know you kind of mold yourself with that, but but certainly you can't deny the success that he's had and over the longevity of the crew that he's had your career in general. "From my standpoint. That's what I did. The music had kind of stopped playing and the chairs were full in terms of cup rides, and really xfinity rides to at that point, it was at the end of fifteen was kind of a challenge to to find anything. There just wasn't a lot and I. Mean I was prepared to go into the start of the twenty sixteen season as a free agent, basically and just see how things went, and that was when I got a call from Tommy Baldwin it literally, this is no joke was two weeks before Daytona I mean. I, remember it was I wanna stay was actually like the Monday, after the broncos made it to the Super Bowl. I always tried to associate things with different moments in time, and people are pretty big broncos fan, so that was a pretty big week for me because they They won the Super Bowl I. WanNA point out also, but it was literally two weeks before Daytona and I. Drive my car and the time you gotta drive already and civil. Some stuff's going on and I need a driver. Can you come drama car and? It had to be one of those quick spur the moment decisions and Okay well I was either going to go into the season as a free agent without a ride or now a fulltime cup ride opens up and I think there's the opportunity to go out and help this team. Get better and help this team. Run better improve and naturally. That's it okay. You know that sounds like a plan. It wasn't like. To you know twenty second decision rested. Okay. Obviously, there's a lot going to a lot of processes that had to go into it, and making it all work needless to say agreed to it, and that was that that kind of sent me down the path of going to drive for him and. I think. That it was a challenging situation because the cup garage had become so tough at the time and I probably underestimated. How tough up garage was right then in terms of how much the equipment Matt how much the driver could make up and what the differences were and you know I. Just I felt like I could maybe run twenty fifth every week twentieth to twenty six every week in the reality. Reality was was that wasn't going to be the case and man that made for. We had some good runs at your, but you expect to expect to have multiple good runs after a couple of them, and it was just a absolute grind on some weeks, just on twenty fifth, and I think that that was kind of I opening to me as to where the Cup gratin and or the. Baby separation and equipment was at the time and I've been in the good stuff and I've been in the bad stuff and I definitely think that it's easier to be in a program. That's trying to build to get better when you're younger than it is. Maybe when you're older when you happen in when you're older, and you've been in that really good stuff. It's always tough to tell yourself flake. Hey, that's okay. This is something that we can't fix her. This is something that we can fix and I think somebody else could probably give you. A good perception of that would be Clint Boyer. Won't he opted the Harry Scott stuff he did that? In Two thousand, sixteen and Clinton raced around each other a lot that year and there's some things that the small teams just are not gonna be able to do explains can do and again as driver. You think you're superman. You can make up for some of that stuff and the reality is that you really can't so that was tough for me from a standpoint knows. Thinking I was my best was running for championship winning races at Jared M.,.

"T took the TV opportunities into that. You're and I didn't know that I would. Perhaps never getting a cup car again right like I didn't have that moment. A lot of guys homestead nails. They say okay. This is it I'm dumb, cop racing and they have that closure. I never had that closure. So when the opportunity came up, and at first it was only one race, and it was like okay. I'm going to go out there and joy for this one racist have as much as I can, and then it went to four races in. Five six on down Melissa's how many races it became a when we went to Charlotte and I forget the order. It was for the Roh forget which number of races into this was when we went there and appeared the Casey was gonna be approved a comeback, and it appeared that Casey was gonna hop back in the car. Dover and Charlotte would be the last race that I needed to run for them. Them they had to test schedule the next day right afterwards with him to put on track and see how he felt in in race conditions essentially so that race I made it a point to have not only my family there, but my wife, my kids, my parents inlaws were there made it a point to have everybody come in. I just say hey. Guys I want everybody to come to this race because. Number one nobody could come to the last one I ran for petty. which is it over number two? I? Just didn't know well. We get through that race in you know. We ended up having a decent day I think we've finished fifteenth or wherever it was, it was a fun race. The the Robles so challenging and so difficult I was exhausted afterwards I. do remember that because it is probably one of the most physically demanding racetracks that we go to and out of the car. And I went hopped in the car and drove home with Megan in Raton Elisa and I'm like. Yeah, this is awesome. I've got closure, and if that's the last one I feel good it and no problem I'm I'm happy as a camper. So. We get done with that and I think it was the Tuesday might have been the Tuesday. After that race..

"My goals long-term here are. Are My goals long-term to array says I. WanNa win a cup championship. Well, if that's my goal as I look at the garage or the opportunities to obtain that goal are going to be very very limited, and very very, if they even existed all few, and far between and I think that was the moment were just happened to be perfect timing to where TV came up and I it was an amazing opportunity to work with some great people and get to know a whole different side of the sport, and gets no a lot of people that that I hadn't met and I enjoyed it so. I don't know like from a competitive standpoint I. Think you you never lose that competitive nature to WanNa be out there and want to go out and succeed WanNa. Win Every time I put on. That's the goal it doesn't matter if I'm the last year on the Chew Racist for junior mortar sports as soon as I pulled off road the goal. The weeks leading up to it and the goal as soon as you fire, the motor is to go win the race, and and that never changes that never I've never lost that desire or that focus in terms of what do on the racetrack, but I do think that I got to a stage in my career after the motorsports success and quite honestly like I was. At. The peak of my ability in a race car, and still getting better to you know Kinda. Have that come to an end a little abruptly and then. Naturally once that came to an end scrambling for a ride and trying to figure out what was going to happen the next year I. DO think you're focus in your life. Focus on your goals. Maybe do change a little bit at times. The bovine family racing ride when you filled in for Casey. Kane at the end of two thousand eighteen. Again back when we had talked to you had said at the time again pulling from that interview that before that think before that your last cup opportunity you run a few races for Richard Petty again. That's super, several and. Didn't really realize at the time. That may have been the last time you'd run some cup races maybe didn't appreciate it at the time. So when the Levine thing came around, and you got to run Eleven Cup races at the end of twenty eighteen. Was your mindset different than in the sense of? Did you appreciate it more what you're doing even though? Though the circumstances were not the best of course, but the fact that you had gotten to run some cup races again. Do you appreciate them more now? Knowing that those could have been your last one I did and I do in to take it one step further so Iran those races and I forget I. Remember telling you word for work because I. Remember like sitting here yesterday about the petty experience in the fact that when it stopped I didn't know again a took..

"Is they feed off of that reaction especially when they're celebrating on the front stretch. What about with you and and your peers at? At Fox sports. Do you think this will be different now? When fans do come back from your standpoint like will you guys be able to feed on that? Now that you've experienced being out on that front stretches well, doing all of these interviews do being in this environment. Do you think you'll be more aware of the fans and that reaction when they come back? Back to the racetrack just in how you do your job, think you're gonNA naturally be more aware of because it's going to be different again you know, let's face it. We run the past two and a half three weeks now. Fans there in the first time was really strange. The second time you're like. Wow, this felt like the first time the third time. E start to think basically well okay I get this now. I've done this a few times, and you kind of adjust the pretty quickly to that so I think that as soon as the fans are allowed back in the stands that reaction number one from the fans is going to be probably a little more loud, and a little more voice for us us than what it's ever been. But number two from everybody else that's. Rather whoever's doing the victory lane interview or whatever a drivers here in a pit road? Maybe it's cheers. Maybe it's booze. That reaction's going to be certainly more welcomed by the driver's by everybody, so I do think that's GonNa be a big moment when we're allowed to have fans back there and I think it's a moment that equally from all sides will be anticipated, and it will be looked forward to and I guess from a broadcaster standpoint I'm a little more guarded from things in terms of the noise and hearing what the fans are because we have to wear ear. Ear Cups in the ear. Cups are so loud or should say silence so much stuff that if we don't hear it through the microphone, we don't pick it up and a Lotta Times. There's other noise through the microphone that gets picked up as well, but I know just seeing the fans. They're over your shoulders for the first time when it does happen against going to be a very big moment, so if I am correct, this is your third year. I believe as a pit reporter. Does that sound right? It is yeah, lucky number for von Lucky number three but number three. So time has flown a little bit since you started doing this. What's been the biggest takeaway? The last couple of years from when you first started doing this to now being in year three, Oh, you know, the first year was so strange for me, and it was so strange in a number of ways decided to make the change and make the commitment to the TV stuff in and that my my priority in that my focus. Would have been two thousand eighteen. I made that decision at the end of two, thousand, seventeen, or close to the two thousand seventeen when I got to Daytona that. I reason in eighteen, not only did I. Not know what to expect. I didn't know how to do a number of different things I didn't even know how to get out of an interview and throw it back to somebody in NS. I completely lost my first interviewing. Qualifying with Martin tracks junior and sending it back to the booth. Mike Joy I got. It wasn't my joy was actually I think Chris Myers?.

"Discussing parts of his career, and before you ask, yes, Regan still believes he won at Talladega in two thousand and has some fun tidbits to share that you might not have heard before about the aftermath of that race. So much to enjoy in this podcast I don't want to delay it any longer because it is lengthy, so here's Regan Smith on the racing writers podcasts. On the more positive side of things we're racing EFI story. Let's talk some racing. Let's focus on the positive and stay positive, so we talked after Darlington, but I wanted to revisit real quick. How has it been now? A few races in broadcasting the way the Fox sports has been broadcasting. You've been boots on the ground and everybody's been switching in and out. Has It gotten easier? Has It gotten smoother when we talk after? After Darlington. You didn't really have any negatives of how it went. You said it went very well, but now a few races in. Has It gone better than expected? Maybe yeah I think it has i. don't like using the term the new normal because I don't believe it is the new normal that this is just normal for right now, but it has become. Become more normal for right now and and you understand how to get into the race track. That process goes even quicker than what it did to begin with. You understand what your guidelines are. When you're at the race track, you understand how to get your work done a little bit better, and you understand how to communicate back with people that aren't necessarily at the. The race track that you're working with in a more efficient manner and I think again for right now. This is the normal and as things adjust as things change attached to believe at some point, fans come back to the race track, and when that happens, I've got to believe that maybe the guidelines for how we processed stuff in. Do things in the garage. Garage Burien at the race track from not only a team standpoint media, standpoint and everybody involved in the graduate. That'll probably adjust so then we'll have to shift in a just a little bit again for that, but certainly it's been flowing smoothly. It flowed smoothly to start with and I think the more we learn, the the better we get at it and you know. Know just like anything. We evolve necessary and that's been. Do see you mentioned when fans can come back to the race track and I know drivers, everybody is excited for that and one of the things that drivers have certainly said..

S- over the weekend I spend time by the pool with my new jbl pulse for speaker which I am now obsessed with. This speaker is bad ass at Waterproof Easily Bluetooth compatible. I'm fascinated by the speaker, and it also has a three hundred sixty degree led light show, which is awesome. It's my new favorite accessory at a highly recommend getting one for yourself.
