"Small guy, and the cubs have a lot of small guys that can break down. He's got something there. He's got that little it factor. I mentioned the first inning. He's also really good late in games. He had his first walk off the other day of sac fly, his two home runs have come late in the game. His OPS is like over a thousand. It's 900 something late in games. So the moment has to be too big for him in ten games, his on base in the first inning is over 800. This is a guy that I think might belong. Yeah, I think if you're going to a page percentage to that high that comes with find a spot form, they'll also likely, I think, find a spot for Wilson Contreras with another team before the trade market. It's very interesting because on one hand, he's having a really good offensive season so far, you know, done the next sort of numbers that I think teams look at. But on the other hand, his defensive numbers are way down. Like his pitch framing numbers are way down. How do you think that contenders will interpret all that Jesse and who are some teams you kind of looking at is maybe potential fits for Contreras once we get into the trade market? Well, I do believe sometimes it could be tough to trade for number one catcher mid season, learning a new pitching staff. But beggars can't be choosers, right? We saw the mets go have an injury with McCann, they're always in contention for anybody that's available if they have a spot open. I would think. I think the cubs were probably correct in going kind of year to year with him. This is a different season. I think he's opened their eyes. He's been a leader in the locker room. He's using the whole field, he's staying on the field, he'll get Nick, but then get back right out there, we're in the past. He's had some injuries. They may still circle back to him. He's got an arbitration hearing in less than a week. That throws a wrench into things, right? They may circle back to him before the deadline and talk about what a long-term contract would look now. I think he wants 20 million a season. I think he's thinking JT real Muto than anyone else that you could compare him to. And just using real mutual as an example buster, you know, he lost an arbitration case with the Phillies. He went to free agency and actually resigned in January. So as long as the relationship is good and I think it's pretty good, you never know what could happen, even going into the off season. Now it's less likely than likely he'd re sign if we're getting to November and stuff. But and I think he's going to move on one way or another. I can't tell you that's August 1st or November 1st. I'm just, I can't read the tea leaves just yet trading number one catchers rentals late in the season, it's not often, right? We don't have a great foundation to look back at and say, this happened, this happened. This happened. You know, I think the mets would be in there. I think that, you know, I have to see who, you know, who's in it there, because here's the thing. There's a lot of people that think the 6 or 7 playoff teams of the 6 playoff teams in each league are set. I think the angels are starting to come back to the pack and the rangers. But if you're set, if you're in the playoff hunt, you're going to give up a lot for a catcher that late in the year. You know, with a two month rental, I'm not sure. So I think the market is yet to emerge for him. Do teams already in the trade for him thinking about October. I'm not sure you do that with a catcher. So it's a little different when you're trading for a number one catcher with two months to go on his contract. And I think that the trade market is yet to emerge from. But I do think he's more likely gone than staying. Yeah, I tend to watch. I think the Yankees are interesting. I mean, it may be that because of their early season success with these two defensive catchers that they're using, that that's the route they'll continue to go. But here's one thing about Contreras. I think you're back me up on this. Teams could look at them as being, you know what? We like our catcher, whoever that is, whatever team that is, we like our catcher, our primary guy, but Wilson Contreras, we can use as a DH because he's a really good offensive player. That's probably why he's played so well. They've been able to get him off his feet. One healthy has been a really good addition to this team. In fact, pitchers really like throwing the yon domes. We also get fres, even with domes down has been DH more PJ Higgins a guy they called up from the miners has been getting time behind the plate. I've seen this on the south side too, yasmani grandal has been a DH more than he's been a catcher. Reese McGuire has been catching, it feels like a little bit of a trend using both your catchers in a game. So yes, you're right, if there's an opening at DH for someone and I don't know if many teams have that opening. We'll see Contreras can play there as well. We got news yesterday about Grayson Rodriguez, one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. He goes down with a lad injury. He's out indefinitely, which the team now has acknowledged. And look, for the Orioles who are building this nice core of young pitching, I was talking with Alex core the other day, the Red Sox manager and he was complimenting how Baltimore staff has gotten better. "So it is quite rare. And the last time it happened with catchers was 1985. It's been a while, right? So Donnie Scott and Orlando Mercado were traded for each other to catchers from Texas and Seattle in April of 1985 and I found a story about that from 1985, which I will link to on the show page, but it was basically like, you know, we like this guy a little bit more than that guy. It wasn't like, hey, we think we have a superstar here. So the quote about that trade. Scott said he thinks the mercados got swap will benefit both parties. We saw what Donnie could do, the second half of the rangers season, and in the long run, we feel like Mercado is going to be a little bit better. He's in the same age range as Scott. They were actually both 23. And I guess he was right. Mercado was a little bit better, technically, or at least he played more, but he was not actually better because they were both sub replacement level players. So Riccardo ended up with negative three career war versus Scott's negative 1.7 career war, so I guess you have to decide is playing more, but accruing even more negative value, better than playing less than accruing less. I guess it is. It was probably better for Mercado. But that's kind of the caliber of the trade you get, what do you trade? Players at the same position who are the same age for each other. So in honor of Danny Scott and Oscar Mercado, who you got in the great Zach Collins versus Reese McGuire trade of 2022, which one are you betting on for the greater career war over the rest of their careers? I'd say Rhys Maguire. Yeah. It's probably the safer bet. If only because again, I think he could actually catch. Right. And this is pretty bad at that, so. Okay, well, thank you. And i think there's a lot of things that he's done that have actually benefited. The team wanting a comes to my head going back to last week when the the yankee earned the j. swift the new york wasn't one. Jerome dyson came off. the bench. Pinch ran at third base. He scored on a sock fly without even sliding and then everyone was saying. That would not have happened if he wasn't in the game blah blah blah. That's just one thing that comes to my mind all around but you know. I just don't see a reason to hold them accountable for do or for. "You'll get some of the stack. Gas numbers advanced metrics. They didn't treat him well. The argument then was well danny. Janssen isn't catching right. And his stats. Splits are so different with janssen behind the plate versus someone. Like reese mcguire albuquerque. It was danny janssen behind the plate in the first game of that double header. He was catching ryu in that. Game and review gave up seven runs in less than three innings of work so i was always skeptical on that argument. You can look at the numbers. Yes maybe it favors him in. Yes you look at the argument that like he just knows this guy better you know were you. It's very hard to think along with him on the mound but janssen does his best at doing that. You can make that argument. But it didn't work out this time. I really don't think that's the case with him. And i think it's a serious consideration like you. I think i hate to say it. But i think his status as a player his history as a pitcher requires him to be on that roster at the moment at least from what we know as much as i wanna be partial to the stats that we have in front of us and the trends from the last two months. He has been there before he's gone to the postseason countless of times with the dodgers he's lead them to the postseason in the first place so i would put him in that situation but at the same time i think the numbers over the next three weeks are going to be very dependent in that case the blue jays. Get to the lds or they get to the sob very interesting conversation to have later down the line but another thing to talk about you mentioned. I i if you move him to move him down to the nine spot or something like that and you like switch him in kirk. I think he would have the same debate about whether Whether he should be up higher in the lineup. Something like that. But with that said i think that's just the nature of the blue jays lineup and the fact that it is so deep and you have so many guys guys that are good and then you have guys. Not because he doesn't deserve to move up but just because you have so many guys that also don't deserve to move down. It's just you have so many guys to the point where naturally when you piece together your lineup. There's going to be guys that are good hitters hitting lower in the lineup. "Look i i just think that rounding it up johnson to me is the most expendable player. And i think he's going to be. You know all the three kirk reese mcguire in jansen. I think the one that you can do without the most is janson It would really baffled me. If i heard me say this in the beginning of the season but given the fact that re tends to balance out the batting order quite well just being a hint that he's at least reliable defensively. I don't think i've ever had an issue with him when it comes to defense. It's just the offense is hit or miss. But if you have kirk to sort of mitigate that and he can catch three out of the two in the rotation i just jansen needs to put it up right now and i just haven't seen enough. I haven't seen enough. That he can prove it and so far it. I'm surprised he's lasted this long. Because the roster spot is just not justifiable to me. But i think he still has minor league options so right now it is literally like you said you're he's eating a forty man roster spot along with those other guys that we have already of you know mold around in the there the fact that obviously the keep merano you know. He's got an answer for five one. I'm so confused. Why he caught ray on sunday. He hasn't caught them all year. I'm still confused there. There were some pitch selections. We heard that reese mcguire was going to get into a lot of games in spring training to really try and re earn his position but it it really is going to depend on. Who performs who and alejandro kirk. I would say has the advantage as of right now. Considering what he did last year in the last. I think he got new ten games. So it's really going to depend on. Who outperforms who We know. Danny janssen's for sure making the roster. That's not a question but it's it really is going to depend on. Is reese mcguire. Able to not only prove that he's good and they can out allah hundred kurt but proved that he last season and the previous years where he wasn't hitting as well really were an outlier and he's able to perform at least league average if not better. I'm i don't know. I like to think like we have all the answers but i really don't know what the blue jays do with this because obviously they don't wanna lose reese mcguire and one hundred kirk only played nine games in the majors but at the same time it looks a whole lot like maguire might be a dud and kirk might be star. So it's like it small sample size all that stuff. But i'm i'm really leaning towards albuquerque and you know whether they try to send reese mcguire down and he gets claimed off waivers by someone. I'm willing to take that risk. I don't know if he really will get claimed off waivers because he hasn't shown himself to be a good catcher in the majors.
