"But I do think that he has a demonstrated capacity to make the case to ownership to spend and it is certainly one that is taking advantage, not like in a mischievous or sort of conniving way, but is speaking to a underlying willingness, but he still has to make the case and he seems to do it in a way that's pretty compelling. So I think it would probably be good for us to think about whether we're starting to or continuing to to think about that as a skill. We should think about it as a skill in the same way that we think about being able to build a hyper efficient roster as a skill and one that seems to be in fairly short supply because maybe if we think about it that way, teens will view it as an inefficiency and then they will hire more people who want to spend, you know. And I think that there are a lot of ways to build a team we've talked about this before, right? Like you can be the raise. It's hard. It's a lot harder to be the raise in some respects than the Dodgers, which I don't say to downplay or denigrate the skill that the folks that work for the Dodgers bring to bear every day either their players or their staff, but when you artificially constrain your means of talent acquisition, you do make things harder for yourself and it makes it very important that you hit on the stuff that you are good at. If you're willing to do a lot of different stuff and you're able to do player dev, if you're able to properly assess and acquire players through trade. And then you're willing to spend on top of that, you just give yourself more safety valves in the event that the prospects you thought were going to be really good don't pan out or the free agent you signed for a big contract blows out his knee or his elbow or whatever. So I really like it. For the second off season in a row, and you know what I'm going to say about the Phillies? No notes. You know? I just don't. I think it's great. I think it's going to be a good fun time. It doesn't address the specific concerns I have around Reese Hoskins for space defense, but like who cares? Because now they have no notes. No notes. No, but I'm saying they're decisions this off season are in some ways addressing the late emerging notes that we may be developed this time went on. And I think we should also take a moment to recognize the chef's kiss perfect tweet that's I want to walk or put out. We're spending more time talking about tweets and I'm frankly comfortable with, but here we are. And he tweeted out the beginning of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, opening credits, but I just am like, you know, they seem to identify guys. She's just like really want to be in Philly and who are good at making that known. You could call it pandering if you, if you wanted to, and I've maybe called it that with Bryce Harper before, but like at the end of the day, everybody seems pretty happy. So why do we have to judge it, you know? What have you got to judge it? Yeah. So I guess that the contracts that walker and Taylor got, that's just kind of the going rate for roughly average starting pitcher at this point. So that's the market. Now, make of that what you will, and the Phillies projected payroll now. So this puts them, I think, third, am I right that puts them third behind the New York teams, the mets and the Yankees, the mets, the mets now are projected to be over 300 million when it comes to the luxury tax projection and just under when it comes to the actual payroll. And that's pending any more moves because they made yet another move they signed to was taking Quintana to $26 million two year deal and they are just going all in on the oldsters in that rotation. Verlander Scherzer as an ancient top two and then cars craske and Josie Quintana as well, mid 30s. I don't want to call it ancient because that's what we are, but by baseball standards, it's getting up there. That's your middle of the rotation. So just we could call them experienced. We could call them seasoned the mets. They're veterans. They certainly are. So they've got moxie in speeds. Yeah, I don't know how durable a healthy they will be. They've been around the block a few times. And so now we will see whether the mets are done or whether Steve Cohen just doesn't care, and he's just going to continue to blow by the Steve Cohen tax and just spend freely because there's still a Brandon nimmo blowing in the wind and other moves that could be made, but look, the ground left, they got Verlander, they've got Quintana now, they already brought back Diaz like they've been busy. They've done some stuff. And they're still some questions to resolve there. And so we'll see whether Steve Cohen has any limits or any self imposed limits or whether he's just going to blow everyone out of the water, payroll wise. Maybe sico and look around and he was like, if you gotten a load of these San Diego Padres? Yeah, right. If they can do it, then they can do it. Now, in projected payroll. Well, a good deal lower than the top one, but still. Yes. San Diego currently has an $83 million gap between them and the mets in terms of projected payroll and then a little less than that in terms of luxury tax stuff, right? So yeah, there is still, there is still a gap there. You know what team sort of sitting right in the middle of the pack? Well, Seattle Mariners. Yeah. We don't have to talk about the Mariners stuff because you guys already talked about it. You talked about cool Wong. I'm just saying, everyone should dream big. You know, I have aspirations. It's not your money. Who cares? Yeah, don't worry about 2026. Of me saying, hey, the Mariners should do big stuff. If they want to unseat the Astros getting grief for that and then having to ground sign when the rangers like a couple of hours later was, well, it was funny, Ben.

"And the team. Bryce, if it so many big home runs, had so many big moments, but the one tonight, the home run that puts this team in the World Series. Tell me what that means to you. Yeah. I mean, my teammates tell you the truth. They keep me going every day. They keep me fired up. They keep me moving. They're the reason why we're here. Not just myself, but everybody in here. Reese Hoskins, unbelievable homers today yesterday. JT room Muto is fingers unbelievable. Zack whaler through the crap out of it today as well. And this fan base, are you kidding me? Let's go. So the very last question, Tom, is what are you expecting, man? What are you about to cover this World Series? You've seen it all. You've chronicled it all. What the hell are we about to get here? Yeah, I think we're getting moments here in this World Series. I mean, it's going to pivot around Bryce Harper because he's just so hot and so good right now. And I say pivot because there are times when I think if Houston is smart, they will not let Bryce Harper beat them. So I always use this analogy. Like back in the day when Lawrence Taylor was doing his thing for the Giants on defense, right? If you were a quarterback or an offensive coordinator, you would have to account for Lawrence Taylor on every play. Like, where is he this time? What's he doing? Is he dropping back? Is he rushing? All these things that he would just influence a play before the ball was snapped. That to me is Bryce Harper in this series. You know, you look at the Astros, they'll be counting the spots to when he comes up in the lineup. Is there somebody on base? They don't really have matchup lefties in their bullpen. They're ready to get out lefties just as well as righties, but right now dusty baker is thinking about when the game is on the line. What am I doing with Bryce Harper? Who are the guys that I want to pitch to Bryce Harper? Is it Abreu? Is it Javier? Is it Presley early? I mean, whatever that answer is, it will dictate where this series goes. So there's a moment where they have to avoid him or maybe there's a moment where they have to pitch him and he comes through. But I do think he's the folk room on which this series turns. And we just break out the popcorn watch. Tom verducci, the man who is warned us about everything that has happened over this last postseason over 13 years ago. Thank you so much for joining us. "Before he finished high school and has pretty much been the LeBron James of baseball in terms of from a very young age and we could very well say that he is underrated. Isn't that amazing? This is where we're at. It's quite ridiculous. But back to the Phillies run, I mean, they have been, at this point, listen, and it's hard for me to visualize it. Even though the Phillies are playing so well, somebody beating the Astros right now, the way they're playing, but at this point, can you really be surprised if Philly goes in here and finds a way to upset the Astros in this World Series? No, I mean, no, because they upset the Cardinals. They upset the graves. They upset the Padres. They should want any of these. Yeah, you bet your ass, they should not beat the Astros. But man, I'm not gonna put a path to anything anymore. I clearly don't know what I'm talking about because I went wrong about the Phillies at every step of the way. You and everybody else to be fair. But man, I'm thrilled to have been wrong. This is so much fun to watch as a baseball fan. Yeah, as a guy that wanted to see the Padres or the Dodgers go to the World Series, yeah, that kind of sucks, but as a baseball fan, this is an awesome story. Just think of the moments that we got. I mean, that Reese Hoskins spiking of the bat. And if anyone doesn't just put that Bryce Harper home run and by the way, that call on the home run, phenomenal, the swing of his life, that is going to be a video and call that will last, especially if the Phillies win the World Series, that's going to be a call that will live forever. I'll tell you what that bad was just if you're a baseball nerd like we are. As a hitter, you have to have an appreciation for that entire bat against Robin swords. Robert Suarez is throwing a hundred miles an hour. He gets ahead, Bryce fouls off a one 200 mph fastball off the plate. And it wasn't like one of those emergency hacks either. It was like a regular foul ball on a hundred. And I'm thinking, I'm watching this game. I'm calling the guy. I'm thinking to myself, oh, okay. He set up for, he said it for the perfect change up. Down and away. And Robert Torres throws the perfect change up down and away. And it wasn't that he took it, it was how he took it. There was no flinch. There was no, it was like, he saw it out of the hand and just like had no movement. Like, no, that's gonna be blows on. As soon as I saw that, I turned to my partner, Jesse agler and no words. And I just had my eyes almost pop out of my head. I'm like, I just, I just knew. I knew that the next pitch, I mean, it had to be, it just had to be a fastball off the plate, basically. And he probably would have walked at that point, but once I saw it over the plate, and it wasn't a bad pitch by the way, it was outer third, a 99 hundred. Yeah. Fuzz. Just and you just knew, once he took that pitch before, I just had this sinking feeling that he was about to do something special. So I had the sinking feeling when he was walking to the plate. I don't know what it was. I just sat there going like, God, this might, this might be loud. I don't know why. I don't know why I think this because Suarez is a monster and he's probably going to K up a storm, but I don't know why Bryce Harper walked in the building.

I guess that makes sense. Wrestle carleton Roger Federer. I know grant was taunting you on Twitter earlier, which you probably didn't see. No, probably not. We're not looking at Twitter. Haven't tweeted since Marge buddy. Wait a little bit to check on that, grant. Your thoughts are for not if the tanti does not see them. So we have a lot to talk about. We want to talk about everything that went down in LA from the futures game to the draft to the All-Star Game to the home run Derby. I do have a couple non all star week related or at least not explicitly all star week related questions for you, Eric. And one I've been wanting to ask you for a while because we've seen a ton of top prospects promoted this season. It's been kind of cool to see them all come up. And the range of results is really wide. And in a Jason stark article earlier this season, Mariners AGM Justin hollander, who has been on the show suggested that what Bill James called the transition tax basically how long it takes prospects to adjust to the majors is as high as it's ever been. I wonder whether you think that's true. But I also wonder what you think it counts for the variability in that transition tax among players who have major league ability and are judged to be big league ready. For instance, you have guys who started slow, but subsequently turned it on, like Julio Rodriguez, who we will be talking about later, or Bobby witt, or adley Richmond, and then you have guys like Jeremy Pena or Nolan Gorman who hit the ground running and started hot. Then you have someone like Kel Nick, who has so far flamed out, or, say, Spencer torkelson, who I believe was one spot below Julio on your pre season rankings, albeit with a lower future value, and then got sent down recently after putting up a 68 WRC plus an almost 300 plate appearances, so I guess you would expect some players to start fast and others to start slow just by chance, but beyond that, what factors might make someone acclimate more or less quickly than someone else? Yeah, I think the big leaguers making adjustments, if you have a whole or something, there's something about you to which I can adjust and start to exploit than I believe that's a key variable. And then of course, you know, we've seen this sometimes it is just a smaller sample, but you think about some of the guys who have had huge beginnings to their careers. Think about how hot Reese Hoskins was at the very, very beginning. Think about how good Chris paddock was. And then just over time these things tend to play out where, oh, you only have these two pitches well. Now that I've seen you, I can eliminate them or I think I wrote about it in the Astros prospect list. Here's where Jeremy Pena is. Issues are if there's going to be a regression here, it's going to be for this reason. You know, it's a guy who's running a 5% walk rate when surprised me, Michael Harris is running a three and a half or so percent walk rate. They lowered his hands, changed his swing upon entry to the big leagues. He already had kind of a hole at the very, very top of the zone. That's the type of thing that over time you get not just big league advanced scouts, but people looking at heat maps and data and swinging approach angle intersection data and they start to find ways of going at you that makes a huge difference. And maybe it doesn't make a huge difference for the first four or 5 innings of the game, but the relievers that face you start to change and the way you're approached starts to change and so there's some of that. I think that that's a Nolan Gorman thing. I think that's a one yepez thing where you sort of learn, oh, this guy just kind of swings, doesn't he? Why don't we just dump sliders out of the zone and one yap as he goes, oh, well, I guess I'm going to have a sub 300 on base. And not have any defensive value when sometimes you can see that's the coming, which was like the case with yep, where even though he began so hot, his profile is what it was. He's just more likely to be the guy that he's been his whole career. Then he is the guy he was for the first month of his big league career. And so I think some of it is that, but I also think that there's just something about the difficulty of majorly baseball that some of them can't do. Like I can't consistently win on all Madden. I can't do it. I've never been able to do it. I can score a hundred points on all pro. But I can not consistently win on all Madden. It's just too much for me and my 33 year old brain to do anymore.

They both have gems lance lynn and carlos on baseball landslides really good by the way. Are we going to up fresh window into the hall of fame like this year or do we wait the five-year requisite time period. I'm just wondering we. This is foreign behind story. This has gone far and beyond some stupid prediction. I made but at some point if he finished a strong ways doing now like where. A next season swindles the cubs first baseman. Aren't you taking him over. Josh bill archer taken him over. Cj krone what about jared walls. Reese hoskins i mean at some we gotta say maybe this guy is good and he's going to do it again next year. We said he's next christian walker. He looks better than that right now if we have that promise him being the first baseman yeah you know. I'm i'm really intrigued. Here based on the contact contact ability has shown decent pop. And you and i both done a lot of dating on him. I could see that case easily over josh bell. As a matter of fact. I looked at him and i think there's sort of a fantasy stabbed valuation. He reminds me at trae mancini where he's not getting enough credit year over year. That'll be yeah. We're going to revisit that one. That's the perfect comp guy for me it's not just ballots mancini. It's a guy who made seaney. I ranked belva everybody this year. I probably had them around fifteen. I dunno schwinn del. I'll rank them that high. If he finishes like this baby he's going to be top hundred. Top two hundred top one hundred top two hundred as a reliable handed bat maybe apart next year. Who knows but i. And he's not he's got the ability to hear that there's some sustainability in this. I mean obviously not the padding average. But i don't think it's about twenty but i mean where is he on the player because that's really all that matters and he's the number two first baseman on the thirty day player at first base. Vlad's the only guy ahead of him and he's got the same player or value. He's ahead freddy freeman. Paul goldschmidt and abreo over the last thirty days french window. So we're not wasting time because of some super prediction. I made and this is come true. Yeah guy you have to roster your which. I was trying to finagle a few weeks before he was really a thing at all fred. Zinke was inevitably going to intel l. trade here where he wanted. You said it till the end of the year is a shoo-in dell has patrick wisdom kind of cold spell over these next three weeks and i don't think that's happening you don't you don't want wisdom on your different very different very different players you know what else is different. "While the Rockies face them this year in Denver, that was The last full weekend of April. So you're talking nearly five months since these two teams last saw each other and obviously some differences for both clubs. Certainly the teams are Much different, and you highlighted one of them the way the Philly's offense has heated up through the summer. We'll see how sends a tell affairs against that lineup. It will be without Reese Hoskins, which is a big loss for the Phillies and had Alec bomb, good looking young player in the lineup at the beginning of the year, But he has fallen upon hard times with his offense and he's back down in the minors. So the Iraqis will see, UH, a primarily veteran group of Philly's here tonight with the exception of the rookie catcher. And the rookie. Well, not a rookie, but young pitcher in Rangers, Suarez Phillies have taken the field wearing knew what you'd call there. Throwback uniforms a little bit the Powder blue with the Red and white stripes down the side of the jersey from the neckline down the sleeves and then on the outside of the torso, all the way down on the outside of the Uniform pants and the old Philadelphia logo with the somewhat I guess you'd call it a script P with a baseball in the whole of the P and And then they have their, uh, Phillies red caps with the white P on the front. Kind of like those uniforms. They are classic. Aren't they been around? I see those uniforms and I immediately think of Mike Schmidt. I was gonna say the same thing. Maybe Pete rose a little bit Rockies will be in their purple jerseys tonight. Steve Carlton to Oh, yeah. Lefty Comanche and feel like he was shaking hands with you. By the time he finished that delivery, what a Terrific picture. The Hall of Famer was for the Phillies number. I had the chance to cover him at the very end of his career. "Toss up to mentor but one of them is fill in france so i think we all know this ends. What's i toss up more likely to win. The alleys the phillies the braves or the meant on a personal note. This very difficult for me. Because the nats aren't involved they were stripped. Mind a couple of weeks ago. Ain't to be lucky to win. Ten or twelve more games arrested a season. So there's a certain amount of disgust. With which i talk about this. The phillies now have officially the easiest schedule of all remaining games. the braves have the sixth easiest. The mets have the artist and at one point. Frank features is unbelievably brutal. Run of thirteen games in a row with the dodgers and the giants. The mets are missing. Degrom who is critical. The braves are missing ozone and a coup junior. The phillies are healthy. Zack wheeler is pitching great. Bryce harper is hitting great people. Say that the mets spend a lot of money on players with the new owner of the phillies. Spend a lot of money there every day. Lineup mccutchen gregorious. Harper real mute. Osa gora reese hoskins. I hate to say this. It looks to me like the phillies. Who haven't been in the playoffs. Since two thousand eleven it looks to me like they're path is easiest. It's hard to believe they've missed it that long. Especially with the wildcard. You mentioned the mets and that all starts on friday those thirteen games against the giants and the dodgers and the whole season is falling. Apart in new york. Everyone looked at the yankees in june. July is a team that was underperforming out of nowhere. The mets have collapsed. And without going to pitch in any of those games against the dodgers and the giants. That's a major concern. I i'll say this about the brace and i understand. They lost a kunia to the season ending knee injury but they did right away. Pickup jock peterson whose batting two ninety with atlanta. So he's actually hitting better with atlanta that he hit for the cubs and there is something to be said for a team that knows to win at this time of year. They've won the division three straight years. So something tells me they will find a way to do it by the way. A lot of pressure on one of your former players in washington bryce harper to get it done this year but in kennedy. That was a good job by philly. Picking up to be the closer the only thing that's killing the phillies at the moment is their bullpen. Has been dreadful absolutely dreadful. If that works out. I think that they probably win. What's next toss up. Where should the padres play. Fernando totti's junior shortstop or outfield okay. You get a lot less action when you're in the outfield and if you dive for a ball most of the time you dive on grass dive in the infield you dive on dirt and you dive on rocks. He has heard his shoulder swinging a bat and he's hurt his shoulder sliding no matter where you play him. He's still going to swing a bat and he's still going to slide. I would say that in the short term. Maybe wanna put him in the outfield. But not in a long term to me frank. Really shortstop he is a unique player. He is a star player. The star factories are the way he plays. Shortstop made him in my mind. The most exciting player in the national league. If you put him in the outfield. There's a lot of guys who play like. He plays a lot of guys. Hit like he hits. So i think in the long term. You want artistes at shortstop. What i'm hoping for is that the owner of the padres will say there is absolutely no concern about hot shoulder. Because i've heard that already today. And i liked the sound of it. Yeah and i'll tell you what you look at. Cal ripken derek. Jeter those big shortstops. That became something in the last twenty years. But remember name robin. Yeah out when he played for the brewers he won. Mvp at shortstop they moved them to send a field and he also won mvp of anyone into the hall of fame. Look like he was thirty five years old. He was one of the youngest looking. Guys that have wanted to the hall of fame tot tees. They're using him in center and right field not in left. I in fact they're out deal coach. Wayne kirby said we think he has too much arm to play left field. But i don't know. I think it's something that they should consider because he plays all out all the time he's already been on the injured list three times a season already. Yeah the shoulder and he so you have to protect that investment. It's not unprecedented. Mookie betts started as an infield right and then went to the outfield. it can be done. It is protective but the star factor. I think short.
