"Right before the mass of covid nineteen lockdown last year. We attended the boston. Sea rovers sixty sixth annual clinic. Which i think was the last in-person scuba related conference and while we had some inkling that something big was happening. Little did we fully grasp the extent of the pandemic at sea rovers. I spent a little bit of time at the national marine life sanctuary booth and i also did a segment on them in episode thirty from april of two thousand. And twenty. if you wanna learn more a couple of weeks ago. I thought i checked their website to see if there were any new updates that i could pass along in my weekly blog. Well it turns out that this past year was a record breaker for sea turtles strandings and that was reported by the massachusetts audubon wellfleet bay wildlife sanctuary and it came in at one thousand one hundred seventy four. By the way the national marine life sanctuary is located in buzzards bay massachusetts. And as i was reading update. I was introduced to an organization that i hadn't heard of before called turtles fly to it sounded interesting so i did a little homework. And i thought i'd introduce you to this fascinating. Organization called turtles fly to. Let's start with their mission and that is to coordinate and facilitate the use of general aviation transport in endangered species critical response teams and to educate the community on conservation of marine life. But how did it all start. Well back in two thousand and fourteen at the start of the cold stunned season. Here in the northeast. That's when water temperatures dropped into turtles body. Temperatures fall below. Acceptable limits integrator greater atlantic. This particular year was bad and early. In the season there was no capacity in the area for caring for these turtles. Something needed to be done to get these turtles to facilities. That could care for them. That's when kate sampson. The coordinator of knowing sea turtle strandings stepped in. She turned to a gentleman. Leslie weinstein owned a company called trulock which was in aviation fastener company. Now leslie had extensive connections across the asian community. He was also on. The university of florida's archie carr center for sea turtle research development board with his interest in sea turtle conservation coupled with his network in the aviation community. He spread the word out that he needed pie. Pilots and planes to volunteer to get these stranded sea turtles to rehabilitation centers across the united states and fast. That effort was a success and they were able to get hundreds of colts done sea turtles to rehabilitation centers. So they could be released back into the wild turtles fly to was born. The organization continued to evolve and grow and under lesley's direction. Turtles fly to became five. Oh one c. Three charitable organization and that provides donors tax deduction today. The executive director is bonnie barnes. Who started working with turtles. Fly to in two thousand and seventeen. She previously was the development manager for reef environmental educational foundation. So how are things going pretty well according to leslie in. His newsletter indicates that two thousand and twenty represented their largest number of missions flown coast to coast. They transported five hundred and thirty six cold. Stunned sea-turtles now. They don't just fly turtles. They transported other marine mammals. One of the stories on their website was about a guadalupe i. He'll stranded in oregon. And that i. You'll need to transport to petaluma california. Two first sale was named solely auto or sunny and while the transport mission was successful solely autos succumbed and was unable to be recovered and died in july of two thousand and twenty. A humpback whale was discovered in. New york's harbor entangled in steel cable and fishing gear. Turtles fly to arrange transport for the disentanglement team and our gear and headed it down to the site where they participated in a successful rescue mission. I also went out to their facebook page and it looks like you can really stay abreast of all the things that they are doing out there. It appears to be more timely and updated than their website. But that doesn't mean there's still not a lot of information on the website. If you're a pilot with a plane you can sign up if you wanna go. In depth topics like sea turtle conservation. You can view previously recorded lectures and like most of these organization. There's an easy way to make a donation. I did poke around to see if they published any type of annual report but wasn't able to find one. Their main office is in boise idaho and to have an east coast office in miami florida. I'm always amazed to come across these unique and important conservation organizations with organizations like turtles fly to we. Divers in ocean advocates can continue to enjoy our encounters with endangered sea.

"This past week. I attended another reef environmental educational foundation or reef webinar whereas they liked to call them fishing ours. This past year. They've been doing something different by having a game of jeopardy on various regions or topics their latest jeopardy game about grouper moon project. I've heard about group or moon before but really didn't know a lot about it so you guessed it time for more research first off. It has been around for almost twenty years now. But how did it all start well. Nassau grouper are fish that aggregate in large numbers for spawning. And they do this around the full moon in the wintertime. As you guessed it fishermen would find it easy to catch large numbers of the nassau grouper during their spawning over time however in the cayman islands the fishermen started to see the collapse of these fish when trying to catch them during the aggregation so began to study restarted. The project to study and monitor the aggregations in partnership with the cayman island department of environment along with researchers now from scripps institute of oceanography and oregon state university. It is billed as the most advanced tropical fisheries research in the world. The project incorporates research monitoring and outreach that jeopardy game that i attended was hosted by bryce and christie simmons who are two of the key researchers heading up the group room project over the past years they have used many different methods of monitoring and tracking to fish during spawning aggregation. They had a category into jeopardy gain on the things. That didn't work so well and i was pretty interesting. But through the research out outreach. They have been able to work with the cayman islands to put in more progressive fishing policies. Some of these policies include a close season from december first through april thirtieth additionally during open season the catch limit is five fish per person per day or five fish per boat and the fish must be between sixteen and twenty four inches long now. The nassau grouper doesn't reach Reproductive age until they're about five to seven years old and have an average lifespan of about twelve years old. They say the oldest known nassau grouper was twenty nine years. Old one of their messages of tracking grouper is by tagging them but they are working on something quite interesting. Facial recognition for nassau grouper the advancements in artificial intelligence are making some amazing things. Possible if you go out to the reef website under the program tab you can find a whole section on the grouper moon project from near you can get an overview of the project access a whole series of publications and papers and have a look at some of the videos of the spawning and aggregations from over the years. There's also a video put together by guy. Harvey that features. Sir richard branson titled grouper moon the next phase. Ah guy harvey expedition in that video. They show one of their latest monitoring and checking efforts and that is to follow the embryos of the nassau grouper to see where they end up. The group moon project is also partnering with the central caribbean marine institute to study impacts of rising sea temperature on these embryos. The increase in ocean temperature has a negative effect. That research is still ongoing. Another impact of climate. Change as i closed out my research. I was wondering just. How effective has the project been. Well here's one piece of information that shows that it is working on little cayman. The aggregation grew from about twelve hundred fish in two thousand and nine to over seven thousand in two thousand eighteen now. That's very impressive. It also represents the first time that a sustained recovery of nassau grouper has a code following a fishery induced collapse. So what started out as another night. Participating in one of reece's programs turned into a broader learning opportunity. Having been a little came in just over a year ago it was really fascinating to see some of the sites as i got a little deeper into the grouper moon project. Just imagine if we went out diving and there were no grouper. It almost happened. But thanks to initiatives like this..
