"Crime in our crime of all the interruption of phenomenal music. Guilty as charged, but I'm telling you right now you are going to love every moment. That you spend with beat Lily and Dennis Mute joins us today. And Dennis, I want to thank you for taking time out for us this morning and Aloha to you. Aloha Friday to you, Rick. Thank you so much for having me on your show, man. It is a pleasure. Welcome back to the blue note. And for folks who haven't had the chance to meet you yet. We'd love to get to know you. Dennis, Tell us a bit about yourself. Originally, you hail from where? Originally I hailed from Redondo Beach, California and been in Hawaii now about 25 years. Gotcha. Gotcha! Where did your love For the Beatles. How did that begin? That is Well, that's a good question, Rick. I was a late bloomer. I was probably 2021 years old and a musician friend of mine really new and a lot about the Beatles and, uh, Told me all these great stories about them, get them getting started at the Cavern Club and how you know they had you know their performances and then Germany over several years, and, you know, basically, really, really took a long time to get them to where they were an overnight success that took about seven years. So anyways, I was really intrigued by these stories. And then I thought, Well, let me just go out and get a couple of records that did that time and And as the needle was going to cost The vinyl. I realized every single fung I was familiar with, and I really loved those fines. And I just had no idea that all of these great funds were from the same band, The Beatles, and that's what I find a lot of people. Now, even as adults when they come and see us play. Maybe they were dragged there by a friend. Or a family member, and likewise, they don't realize that all these great songs are from the Beatles. And so when they hear us perform, they're like, Wow, I didn't realize those Robbie Oh, funds. I love you guys, but I love the people, so it's really cool. You know, I I read an article that mutual friend John Berger had authored and he was spot on about the fact you have this mad, passionate dedication. To the precision of performing, but the fact that it's four strings or three plus strings on the hook to combine this wondrous music. With a ukulele. One won an incredible idea. But you and your band mates had performed as a tribute band, traditionally a tribute band. How that transition was made to local lately, though. Well, that's a great question and way out. We did have the full gear instead of before with the electric guitars and I have the Ringo guy I played the full drum set, and even then we were all about trying to perform. The music is close to the record as possible. And then, um, you know, we didn't take ourselves too seriously. We just played, you know some parties and private gigs here and there. But, um, no. Let who's our Paul McCartney guy. He and I founded the band about, um, 11 years ago. And he took up the ukulele for the first time after living in Hawaii about 30 years. Hey, and Sonny are John Lennon guy actually. Group in the Philippines. But events like both of them have been here in Hawaii a long time and so but strangely, no, let's just pick up the ukulele and he is just one of those incredibly incredible musicians that can pick up an instrument and master it in no time. And then he brought the idea to us like a what if we were to transition and We recognize that nobody else was doing beetles on ukulele, and we thought being from Hawaii that would make perfect sense because it would be kind of Shameful If there was some band in Czechoslovakia. Yes, they took up the Opal Elise and was the Beatles tribute band there, Which would be fine, But it just seems like it should be from Hawaii. Right? Perfect. Perfect, phenomenal. Dennis Smith joins us. Beat Lily is performing a week from tonight. Returning to the blue Note on by the way, I have a mad, passionate love affair with the blue Note. I love everyone there. I think they've done tremendous strides and returning entertainment back one of the very first to do so. How's your experience with blue note? Yeah, You know, it's um It's been a wonderful relationship with them. They treat us so well and we are so honored and grateful to be asked to return again and again. I think this is gonna be our 10th or 12th. I'm playing their little last couple of years, So they made this a wonderful venue and they have definitely taken all the precautions in this Coben environment. The great news is we were. We were almost sold out for this next Friday. The six o'clock show they just added a lot more seats and table so they're still Tickets available if you can get on it quickly, and so they're continuing to expand their seating capacity in a real safe way. And I think when people go there, they will definitely see that And yet you're still able T O appreciate and enjoy the light music and the atmosphere like like, ever before. Well, it is, as you can hear, just from Brief selection and we'll play more leading up to next week. Be sure Log on the blue Note hawaii dot com and you'll be able to order your tickets and everything online..

Jerry on the line from Hatfield, P A. Hello, Jerry. Highly before I used to buy quick two questions. I want to give kudos to Kim. Without even asking me to recognize my voice totally words from my question from last week. That may mean that you've been calling too often, but OK, She's good at that, though, isn't she? Yes, you breathe. My question is that uh, every last week about PFC changes the regulation read the kinship charged you? Yes, providers have known equipment. That's right. Number all your satellite company and ask him Did they put me on hold for, like $45, man that I have to talkto. See your resolution, all or whatever. And he's Oh, no, no, not the cheese the term but changed the wording. Undercharged me $7 a month for using my own equipment. That's illegal. Do you think there are any recourse to called the FCC? Yeah. It's illegal. They're not supposed to charge you for using your own equipment. I think the law was pretty darn specific. How did they? What little What little weaselly thing that they do this to make them think they could do this? After a legal words weasel words on the prior bill. I hold them up. I could see it and they said, Yeah, we charge you for you. The use of your equipment. Then the war came out. No, no, no, It's not these here equipments for something else at the service of Service field. Yeah, I would you know, or go to the local State Utilities Commission. I would definitely pursue it. They're figuring most people just go find whatever. But I think that that's the you know that's the intent of the law is very clear The fact that they change what they call it. Doesn't really change the fact of the matter, which is they're charging you. For using your own equipment. Another How could I find out what cell provider's offer? Uh, call screening? I'm getting a lot of rebel calls. Oh, man. All of a sudden. I don't know what happened January 1st, but I'm getting so money. Spammy texts. It's driving me nuts. Um The Big Four are in theory, supporting this new stir and shaken protocol, and that's supposedly going to reduce the number of spam calls because It requires his call. Be authenticated by the originating cell phone company and gives you the option If it's not To turn it down. And, of course, most spammers will not authenticate their phone calls. They'll try to use weird Third party services, but I don't know. Maybe the FCC has a registry. Of carriers that support spam blocking, or are you, uh, Street Park and they use? Uh, no, they bark. They buy servers from 18 tea or whatever. Which may have that service. Yeah, but often when you're using an in Vienna, which is what that is a mobile virtual that work office. Uh, With Theo staff I can remember. But you can't. But that doesn't mean you get all the features that 18 T offers, And that would be probably one. That would you know, be left out. So FCC has a page FCC dot gov slash called dash blocking Okay? And it talks about the mobile carriers. I straight talk is not on this list. That and what and how each one does it 18 tp Google's Project five Sprint T Mobile, US Cellular. And Verizon are on this list. There are also some other resource is some solutions that come with the hardware. So Apple has a optimus silence. Unknown callers. Google pixel phones have a call screening feature. Samsung uses service called Hyah to T O Do Smart calls, Toe block unwanted calls there. This this, you know, the CFC sees the Is the regulatory agency that's involved here and they have been trying To eliminate this problem because it is a huge problem, right? So why would at least start their FCC dot com slash called ash blocking? We'll put that in the show notes too, for I will try that. Thank you. I'll try not to call so much You call as much as you want. You get in, Jerry, you deserve to get on. All right. All right. Take care. I always remember Jerry. Because of the Hatfields and the McCoys. And I figure I wanted Hatfield P A is where that famous feud started. The Hatfields and the McCoys. I don't know. That's how I remember you anyway, Jerry. Uh, it's in the Monica trinkets. Okay? Our show today brought to you by I drive back up so important. We've talked about back up before. I hope you are doing it and one of the most important features of any backup plan. You know you're planning for the worst. Is to have offsite backup because there are things that can happen to your local backup. That can't happen if they're off site. I mean, obviously fire flood Tornado. All of those things can destroy local backups. But often ransomware will, too, because it just, you know, goes to everything that's connected to your computer. "Us at the top of the hour. He'll be taking your questions on Cove in 19 as it relates to the election. At 800 to 2 to K A B C 1 800 to 2 to 5 to 2 to let's begin with John in Redondo Beach, John, You're on K ABC welcome. Hello. Hi there. Yeah. I got a wooden cross winds. There's going to be all kind of rioting going on in all the cities. I won. I was wondering, what do you think about Having the high pressure water hose. Gun nozzles on trucks or something. To try to quash the riding. Well, I think that with lockdowns in particular the temperature in the room is high. And we've seen riots for any number of reasons. We saw riots after what happened to George Floyd in Minneapolis. We've seen riots after the Lakers win the world championship after the Dodgers win. We see rights for this. We see rights for that. People are going to riot either they're gonna riot because Trump won the election and they're angry or Joe Biden wins the election and their celebratory people are going to do what they're going to Dio. And if you're a mayor of a city where there is rioting that's going on and your police department can't handle it. The president has said. Time and time again. All you have to do is call and I'll send the National Guard in to help out and put it down. What we've seen is we've seen reluctant mayor's reluctant police chiefs, reluctant city councils who don't want to ask for help, and as soon as they tell their population, they're not going to ask for help. What happens is what happened on Melrose in Los Angeles. What happened in Beverly Hills? What happen in Santa Monica where people know they can get away with just about anything, and they do it. Thankfully for the world, I'm willing to sacrifice Portland. It's 12 53. The Dodgers are World.

Inside Uber's Push to Win California Ballot Race

"Opponents of a ballot measure, bankrolled by Uber lift, have questioned the use of uber hubs as voting locations in L. A county. This comes pretty close pretty close to buying a vote. Democratic Assemblyman Miguel Santiago from L. A says it's a conflict for people to cast votes at the location that's tied to a company with a proposition on the ballot. It doesn't make any sense. It would be like me running a full fledged campaign and having a voting center in sight of my campaign office, close to $200 million has been spent to push the ballot measure, which would keep drivers classified his independent contractors to uber UBS in Burbank and Redondo Beach are among the 800 voting locations in L. A county that opened the weekend before Election Day in

Hey, thanks bringing out on a Saturday. You know, I'm really things get cloudy. Get it. We're all living in a small box these days, but Looking outside. It's a beautiful day on DH talking about good things to eat, drink and all of that always puts a smile on my face. I hope that you This show finds you in a good mood. You know, I want to open up the phones fear in the mood. We'll see. Ah, If everybody feels like playing right now, But I haven't talked to you folks in a long time on the phone, so we'll open up the phones to talk about the future of restaurants and dining out. Are you ready to die now? You know, Because everybody keeps talking about the government. I get it. I get I get that. This is very frustrating, and I was super vocal at the beginning that my fears for the economy war massive And especially when it comes to the food industry, whom I love and who are really the backbone of our economy are local economy, so If you're ready to go back if you're not ready to go back, I want to hear from you or if you have ideas on how they could open up more safely or the future. I'm going to share some of mine as well. But give me call 800 5 to 01534 That's 805 to 01534 Dining out Yes. No. Are you ready? Are you just waiting for them to be open? Have you gone out at all those types of things? 805 to 01534 So I used the wrong word. God bless my brother Craig. That's what family members do. You don't get away with anything. Oil of my wife. She Well, there's 1000 reasons why I love my wife. One of things I like is that she doesn't mince words. Very. And you do something. She'll look at you like what? What was that about? So this is what I did so stratum. Ah is the plural of strata. And I went to go say strata, and then I wanted to put it in the progressive like states of strata, and I went to the word gradation, which is a term that's used a lot by artists when you're you're Creating levels of grey or stages of gray and I combined the two and said straight Asian Works for me. Yeah. Did you Jamie King who makes her living at words. Did you know what I was talking about? No, but that's how I don't know what you're talking about Happen. Ah. That's not just sad. Ah, Amy King, you love food. You're moody. And you're a very social person. You have great social idea of great friends. You're always talking about hanging out getting together. Thiss whole time. You know? How do you deal with this when When you're in that mode of wanting to go out one sport restaurants. We were just talking about this yesterday because I had a friend came over. We went for a long walk because you, Khun go for a walk outside, socially distance, all that stuff and sure we decided to go on another walk tomorrow Sunday morning when they'd be great, I said, and then let's go toe. Aah! Just like we would normally go out to brunch or something. And we were We talked about it, and we thought Okay, There's an outside place in my neighborhood. But do we want to do that? Do you want to sit there with your mask on and pull your mask down to take a bite and put your mask back on? You know what are the current rules and stuff and we just kind of went I don't think it's worth it right now yet becomes complicated. You know? My wife asked me, she said, You know, why are you missing going on? I said, Well, yeah, course. Yeah. I'm missing everything. But you're going in. Yeah, we order in most certainly, but it's also a different experience, and I like to see I like to see how it's all being put together. I'd like to see The ambience of the location and and see that the the line cooks and the chef busting their humps. I like see the whole process of it, and I like the presentation. I love it. When they bring the food that beautiful food to your table. It's a little bit different when it comes in. Styrofoam container, even if faced justice and you know, I'm enjoying. I talked at the beginning that show about these family meals they're doing. Ah! It's so Kalo in in Santa Monica with Susan Feniger and those things gorgeous and come, you know, even if they're coming in those aluminum foil like Like buffet kind of Trey's still they They're all lined up in there plated beautifully in there, and I see things like that. I go. OK, I You know, I want to support these places. And you could have some tonight have some tomorrow. And things like that, But I get that there's there's something about the experience that makes part of the magic and I'm ready. To go out. I have to be responsible for my little one and my wife and also my mother on DH Tracy's family, So we're all looking at this differently for people that we love and want to protect. Man. What I just wonder what the future is going to be, because even if they're opened, even if the government says, Okay, open everything up or people ready, and are they ready for the exact same experience or they're going to want something different? And I think that might be the case, even though we grow forgetful very easily. You remember Amy? Right after 9 11 It was like, you know, we're all on board. Whatever you need to do extra security measures, and three months later, it's like I go to take off my shoes. What the hell? I got to take my laptop out of the bag. So we forget easy, but I'd love to hear from you. If you're ready to go to restaurants. Give me a call. If you're not ready, Give me a call. Or if you have an idea what the future of restaurant ing might look like and dining. Give us call 805 to 015 805 to 01 can find will take your calls when we return. Let's get the latest news. "In Redondo beach at four fifteen. This is all things considered from NPR news. I'm Ari Shapiro Cornish in about a month as many as twenty democratic presidential candidates will gather on a very crowded stage split over two nights for their first debate the stage might be less crowded this fall as NPR's Scott. Detro- reports the Democratic National Committee is making it harder for candidates to qualify for debates beginning in September during the two thousand sixteen campaign, the Republican National Committee and TV networks dealt with a very large field by dividing debates into varsity and JV debate or a cocktail hour and dinner, or an undercard in Maine fight just pick your favorite metaphor. Here's CNN's wolf Blitzer. Introducing one of those early debates, we've divided the large field that the two groups based on their ranking chair, Tom Perez, says one of his main goals was to avoid that awkward divide, especially since it's an even larger field this time. So next month. Top eight polling candidates will be split up over two nights of back. Back debates. So four of those top eight go on night. One the other four go on to the same thing, the other twelve that assumes all twenty spots will be filled by qualified candidates. The DNC said, bars candidates need to clear to make the stage they need to register at least one percent in specific polls and also have at least sixty five thousand donors spread across twenty states. The reason for the donation hurdle, firmly believe that the next nominee on the democratic side needs to really work hard to gauge the grass roots. And so we wanted to incentivize that the requirement led to candidates like New Jersey Senator Corey Booker asking for really small contributions, just a game that donor, total, we need folks pitch in one dollars. Can you pitch in one dollars today? Now, expect to see way more of those fundraising requests on social media. The DNC is doubling its requirements for its fall debates. Instead of polling at one percent candidates will need to to. Percent. They'll need one hundred thirty thousand donors instead of sixty five thousand and instead of needing to hit just one of those Mark, they'll need to meet both looking at where the polls are now that would cut the number of qualified candidates in half. That could mean just one night for the September debate, Scott Tetreault, NPR news, Washington..
