"Senator was With the red wings last season got off to an amazing. Start out of the gate. Bobby ryan fans were going. Oh my god. How did we get rid of. That guy is unbelievable. Five points in five games out of the gate for the red wings after he signed on a free agent with them didn't do much after that finished with fourteen points total on the entire season he played thirty three games on the year so red wings decided they will give him another go on a professional tryout. So we'll we'll see if he can make the team. He's still getting paid. Dwell by the ottawa senators after they bought out the final two years of his seven-year fifty million dollar contract. When you footnote it with that say okay bob. you'll be all right. we are in. You'll be okay. The best guy. Ever steve with contracts with mike keenan. Mike keenan kept getting hired and fired so much he would. He's telling me go to the mailbox every month. And there'd be. I think at one time stevie like four checks from four different teams that he had so good for bobby yet for bobby nice seems that was life back on track by his own. Admission stepped away in his final years in ottawa. Senator with that alcohol issue came back. And i think it was his first home game back after missing many months dealing with this thing and then getting a hat trick in his very first game that worked pretty special night. I think maybe the most memorable night of that season so was pretty cool. That the other hawks story. I want to get to james scott of interesting on the cove in front and the blue jackets are not messing around. They fired silvana. La fave as an assistant coach back on september thirteenth because he refused to be vaccinated. Well now the blue jackets have reportedly told forward zac rinaldo to go away as well because he's not vaccinated and not planning to be so he is not welcome at training camp. He was signed a one year deal back on august thirteenth made headlines last week for speaking at a people's party of canada rally during which he made his opposition to vaccine passports abundantly clear said. I'm not anti vaccine. I'm not anti mask. I am pro choice and so now the blue jackets have exercised their own right to choose opting to tell rinaldo to go away. Yeah i don't. I don't really care anymore. But those people whether they get vaccinated or not steve speaking the nhl. you know. I read again today that they're they're they're confirming that they're gonna be probably ninety ninety eight percent vaccinated you.
Officials Urge Killing of Invasive Spotted Lanternfly
"If you live on the east coast of the us especially in new york or pennsylvania and see a visually striking spotted lantern fly. The state governments would like you to forget any humane ideas about carefully moving it from one spot to another and instead to immediately kill it the spotted lantern fly is an invasive pest that is not native to the us and apparently is threatening to over seventy of the plant species that feeds on feeds on meaning draining sap and leaving them weakened and vulnerable to disease among those species. Is the atlantis autism or tree of heaven which the new york times points out is best known as the tree from betty. Smith's nineteen forty-three novel. A tree grows in brooklyn but this pernicious beast who has delicate grey wings spotted in black with a bonus set of bright red wings also spotted with black underneath. I arrived in the us from asia seven years ago and entered new york city last year. During the pandemic environmentalists ecologists are encouraging people to kill the bugs site because they have no natural predators here and no organic pesticides that can take them out here. New york the department of agriculture is additionally asking people to submit the location where you found the lantern fly on their website in pennsylvania. If you're caught moving the insect from one location to another you could be fined. Abort from the destruction these little lantern flies could cause on native species. Governments are being so intense because they know that the lantern flies are quite striking. They're not the kind of bug most people would want to kill. Unlike some other invasive species like the asian longhorn beetle that caused a massive deforestation throughout new york in the late nineties. According to the new york times

"Coast. Insen yada san philipe to fifty had a heart attack in the middle of the race again. He was the director writer and producer of the series cops that debuted in march of eighty nine and ran for thirty two seasons. It was not renewed last year about paramount. Because george floyd died of a fenton all overdose and somehow we needed to destabilize america by defunding the cops and convincing. Everyone cops are bad. People so monuments were built to george. Floyd monuments were built to be torn down but they are really really looking for the four people who spray painted the george floyd monument. I thought what we learned from the last year is that monuments were there for the amusement of people who wanted to deface them. Tear them down. Rip them off smash them. Oh i guess not. When it's george floyd only if. It's abraham lincoln when cops was purchased by fox that was a startup network in. It's the show that really launched them. The simpsons would take them to a different level but the reason they went with that show is because the production costs were so low you're mining for wonderful entertainment by throwing a camera on your shoulder and following cops through the hood. There is endless entertainment. You've always got some dude with his shirt off. You've always got some guy doing a drug deal us. You always have to people out in the street fighting you just roll up on him and film it compelling stuff you basically just showing us. What's going on across town. You're just showing democrats in their nash. Natural habitat that's just it. It's like a zoo. Show you just showing democrats and their national in their natural habitat. Criminals engaged in crime doesn't matter what skin color are white guys. Black guys hispanic guys are always going to have their shirt off. They're always going to have scratch marks for some woman just scratched him up. There was going to be proclaiming their innocence. The cop is being way more restrained than normal and way more patient. Okay sir well. We're we're just curious why you running across the street at a high rate of speed win. We hadn't turned on our lights or anything. Sir i'll just i'll just strategy how it was growls. I was gonna go get a big mac. I'm skeptical of the answer. You have given to my interrogatory because the cops always use like the kind of law school style. Words in the shows since we're on the theme of the great boxers of the eighties. It was on this day in nineteen ninety-seven not his finest moment when mike tyson chump on evanger holyfield's ear hears about keep your eye on mike. Mike as just see you can see you can see. Only real slow humphry might get you just raises. It invites him. Yeah what's the commercial. They had this last year. We're tyson breezes ear back that was quality right. There that was quality was on this day on in seventeen seventy eight when mary hays mccauley carried water to the soldiers in the battle of monmouth. It was here that she would earn the nickname. Molly pitcher on this day in eighteen. Forty six adolph sax patented a musical instrument that he had invented a few years earlier. Can you guess what it was called on this day in eighteen eighty. Four congress declared labor day to be a holiday grover. Cleveland signed the bill on this day in eighteen. Eighty seven coca cola syrup and extract. Were patented on this day in nineteen fourteen. What is considered to have triggered the war to end all wars which it turned out not to be austria's archduke. Franz ferdinand was assassinated in sarajevo sarajevo. On this day in nineteen seventy one. The supreme court overturned the conviction mohammed ali for draft evasion. Muhammad ali was a hell of a fighter and a great entertainer. But how do you say to the moms. And dads of the young man who went off and served in vietnam when they were commanded to that. This guy doesn't have to and there will be no consequences for that because he's famous and changed his name. That's just not right. That is just not right. Apparently there's a new orleans version of the show cops this called nightwatch that is rather compelling programming. I haven't seen it yet. I just heard from some of our new orleans listeners. That it's a good program. There's a new netflix show. Chad tells me called the kings. And it's about. Let's see it's about duran hagler hitman hearns and sugar ray leonard sugar ray. Leonard is such a great nickname that when they put marvelous marvin hagler hagler or thomas. The hitman hearns. They put quotes for sugar. Ray leonard that don't even put quote it's just. It's just his name as just who he is. You go well. I started the show by telling you that whether you realize it or not. You saved a life this weekend to and you saved several over the last month i just got an update on a new story. That david malls. We didn't know about another veteran whose life was saved in the greater houston area not the city of houston proper but with an hour away all because somebody new the right phone number to call eight seven seven seven one seven. Ptsd put that in your phone. You just never know when you're the guy that comes up on suicidal veteran and says here. I'm gonna dial this number. There's going to be a veteran wedding on the other line. Take this call. You never know when you're going to need to be the one to share a phone number to save somebody's life because you don't want to have missed that opportunity and later be saying you know. I didn't think he'd do it. But i knew there was a doubt. How many moms and dads said to david malls be. I wish i'd known this program was here when my child was still alive. Eight seven seven seven one seven. Ptsd for all you do for camp hope thanks..

"Glance shopping. Look at him. Because i thought the guy was coming over at me. Not at me. Like i ready to to fight sugar ray. But i thought he was coming to say something to my doctor stanley. Do c'mon is my cardiologists. That's who we're having dinner with him and his wife and he's cardiologists a lot of famous people and he was looking up at sugar. Ray as i looked i thought he was coming over to say hello to him. But i didn't know who it was wasn't i i just. There's almost nobody black. Aspen like literally at any given time There may be three people in aspen. That are black and two of them are members of my family. You do not ever ever see anybody black. I've never seen like at portland. Used to be that way. I've never seen anything like in my life anywhere else. So i look up and there. Is this black guy whose face i recognize. But i can't figure out why at first. And i thought it was don cheadle in the reason. I didn't realize it was sugar. Ray at first is because he's little biddy. I mean little ramon. I'm trying to think of somebody we know in common imagine. Burt advert didn't have a belly imagined bert. If burke got real skinny real skinny now the man is sixty five years old. He looks somewhere between forty. Five and forty eight. He might die his hair. He gives a pretty short and that certainly helps but he is leave. Move really lean. Anyway i look i resist the urge because unless you have an actual connection to a famous person they don't wanna be bothered and i have come to to decide this very selfish need to go. Hey can i take a photo swaggie. Show everybody later. So i didn't. I didn't say anything about no moss. I didn't talk about my weight loss. I didn't talk about my hamstring. Because nobody could have understood my hamstring. Quite like joe theismann because of what happened to him with his sheehan and sugar. Ray leonard considering all the shots he took. I'll tell you what when you hang out with loose avarice you go man. You fought holyfield foreman tyson. Yeah i believe he can show you the scars to prove it. Sugar ray looks like he never took a hit. I'm sure he had some work done. But i'm telling you that guy. Neither one of his is is even partially closed. He looks good. I was so impressed. And i was even more impressed at my restraint throughout the course of the dinner. Ooh i wanted to just reach over you. The great but i didn't i didn't sugar ray really was that good and my dad and i used to sit and watch boxing together and the three fights between duran and sugar ray the brawl in montreal which was the first one i think that was in eighty or eighty one. I think it was eighty where duran manages to win and that was of the knockout. It was a it was a decision. It was unanimous decision but it was a decision and then the second one which i believe was in the superdome. I think the second one was in new orleans at superdome and ray charles sang the national anthem. Relax yesterday and i came here. Went five six seven round. Maybe seven rounds in. That's the one where duran says no moss. He couldn't handle anymore. Leonard had beat up on durant was. I don't know what the scoring was at that point. But i think durant was probably winning through five dad and decided to rams gonna win again and we wanted sugar ray to win so badly and.

"Just yesterday morning. They let me know you home. Suzanne plans they made put an into a walked out. This moan. ano- wrote down this song. Just can't remember who descended to. I've seen fire and seen rain seen sunny days. That are thought booth now seems only times when a could not find a friend sixteen years ago. Today that navy seals were dropped into afghanistan in order to disrupt the operation of a taliban terror leader. You know the story. You know the story because houston's own marcus. Luttrell kept a diary as he had done since he was eight years old and as he came home and recovered he sat in his hospital bed with his body broken and busted and he wrote the story. Us navy upon reviewing it would make the fateful decision to allow him to publish that story and it would become a bestseller a never. Forget my brother. Chris telling me this book you gotta read about this guy. He's from houston actually she. You should see if you can meet him. Playing marcus trail is is one bad bad dude. It's a story man and it took me some time to get to it and then eventually the movie would be made and that would be the moment when the world would know the story of what happened in operation red wings danny dates michael murphy. Matthew jen incredible story. But i can't help but think if marcus latrell doesn't survive. Which by all accounts. He should not have after this firefight. Then we don't know the story. But if marcus luttrell survives and doesn't write it all down we don't know story if a publisher doesn't publish it. Which means how many more of these stories happen that we never even know about how many axelsson indeces in murphy's how many wives bury their husband. How many boys and girls see their mom and dad in a flag draped coffin. How many parents see their child carried away from them and you never ever know about the thing about. It is when marcus trail got back. Having received the navy cross and the purple heart he still goes back to ramadi. Still goes back into one of the most dangerous zones. He goes into iraq or his brother had also served. Morgan is now running. Congress and i have spent a lot of time processing the idea. There are many many more stories like this. That have never been told. And we'll never been will never be told and to think that their families their families will never be honored and remembered the way these were because of the work of marcus trail now it was not just his story to tell it was theirs. And if you've ever heard marcus on the show. He's told several times about the difficulty he had as he went and met with each. One of them patsy dietz. Who's come every year for the the danie dates memorial tells the story of win. Marcus came. She already been notified that her husband had been killed. But when marcus said i intend to tell the story. But i'm not gonna do it unless every one of you says that i have unless i have your blessing and they gave it but as he said it was not until he first shared that story with him he did not want them to hear how their husbands died without knowing it from him since he was there and a part of it. That's the cost of war. That's the toll you wear you pay. When i was interviewing morgan. Latrell who's also seen some very nasty combat himself marcus's brother also a navy seal and i asked him. I asked him later that day off air about his tattoos. Who said these are not tattoos. Warpaint this is my reminder of what i went through and this is my reminder. Each bit of this of guys at did not come home. Who will not get to be a father who will not get to serve their country and congress and build businesses and go to church and be there for their parents when they need them and help them in their final days so that was sixteen years ago today. That operation red wings commenced a lot has happened. In the meantime a whole lot has happened. Miles taylor one of these. Never trump flunkies at the media loves. He's the one who pinned supposedly anonymous op. Ed attacking donald trump the new york times carried that and inflated his importance in his influence saying a senior influential official was criticizing trump. What turned out was miles taylor. That's like david french in a beret. Well now miles. Taylor has thrust himself into the limelight. By writing quote if trump somehow wins the gop nominee nomination in two thousand twenty four. I will run against him as an independent and recruit more conservatives to do the same we will split the vote and seeing him. Oh no.

From Public Defender To Stanley Cup Champion
"So joe for those who might not follow the nhl super closely. Can you just give us a sense of what jon cooper has accomplished during his as a coach in the nhl. Definitely jon cooper is the longest tenured coach shell. He's on an eight th anniversary of his hiring on this week. The winningest coach in franchise history for the lightning. And i think he's highly regarded as one of the better coaches in the league and probably a candidate coach team. Canada at the next olympics are positions and olympics for the trump player so deadly highly regarded coach but up until this past season. He hasn't won the big one and that was kind of the big question surrounding it. And how would you describe his personality. Well he's a players go. She's a really fun personality. Like you quotes wedding crashers. Upper seventy six. No excuses public champion. You uses a champion. The only person you have to answer to when you go home at night is really yourself. The national media loves him because he is a great world this charismatic. You're going to get knocked down. There's no question people are going to push down. Because ultimately they want to see it fail if you think maybe teams on trips to like field of dreams when he was in earlier years coaching. He's all about the different sides and binding guys together on the ice and that if you get is connected as a group and the for each other and very process over outcome kind of guy and so you definitely has that charisma that makes them unique. I think the players like that. We'll show you recently. Wrote about how jon cooper has followed perhaps the most unconventional path of any stanley cup winning coach. So take us back to the late. Nineteen ninety s. What was john. Cooper's lifelike at that time he was living in a condo east lansing area couple remains but he was just trying to figure out where you wanted to be in his life. What he wanted to do for work. He was good ball. Charismatic lawyer but his heart wasn't in it always always wondering when is the fulfillment. When are you going to sit there and wake up every day and say. I can't wait to go do what i'm gonna do. He was defender district court in lansing michigan about a thousand dollars a month. You know we're going for indigent clients. He was working on. du is having divorces. You've got a two person law. Office him in a paralegal. He's still didn't know i guess. Were taken at that point. And you got in touch with the judge. Who worked with jon cooper back. Then what did he say about cooper skills in the courtroom and you just notice and how clients clients listen to prosecutors respected him i think is the kind of ability that transcends coaching the ability to persuade players to adopt your system or just believe the approach. So you know. He's he's a good salesman. He always says convincing players. Convincing a jury and i don't think he knew then that it would be kind of the key to him. Maybe starting coaching career. So how did jon cooper go from being this lowly paid lawyer and a former lacrosse player. Who had only played a year of club hockey in college to being high school hockey coach. Well the run in his son playful lansing catholic high school and they needed a coach and so he knew of john skills on the ice and new of his charisma and then he is asked to one day in the building. I saw the coach. would you be interested. He looks at me and goes. Dc the stack of resumes. I have he says. I'll tell you one thing you coach kids high school hockey team and i will take your resume from here. We put it here. Just this exactly. That was his first kind of foray into coaching hockey. Was nine thousand nine hundred nine hundred thousand lansing catholic cougars hockey team and that was seventeen. You actually talked to some of the players on that lansing catholic team. What did they tell you about jon. Cooper the high school coach. I think what's interesting knees. They remember the first meeting in the cafeteria where he's using himself to like twenty kids and parents and those us have just nervous as they were and are waiting to hear whereas the hockey background. Who did he coach before. Because one of the red wings was he part of this huge talk about law school in wall street and this guy another guys were in the nhl players. Even highly college players inducted himself would be anywhere high in coaching world. A reflection of guys play together. I think they'll be the first ones to tell you. None of them really on the track to make the national hockey league but they were such a joy to be around the competed their butts off just line. Who an awkward gesture. The of funny kid and team talked about like there was a hill just a mile from the school that the workouts outside the big hill. The he must've just saw he was driving around and he made us run up this hill with do bear calls and stuff. That is the source. I've ever been my life like. I could not long like off chris. Monrovia now works the red wings. Illitch family talked about how they had this practice where they had no on the ice and they're doing push ups and sit ups and kristin ross. Who served in the military students in afghanistan he goes. I went through the army for seven years. And i went through a lot of work out a lot of hellish days. Afghans dead. That's one of those days that i think back much. It's not as bad as back. And what else did you learn about his coaching philosophy back. Then you know like what were the things that were important to him that he really emphasized to the team. Making guys feel connected or part of it no matter if you were the best player on this team or like the thirteenth forward and i think jeff swan is appropriate examples. Like i wasn't the most natural coordinated like county out now who put me not aligned with the two players. Mike sack out with the most gifted athlete. That are high school in you. The team is better holding. Some of its part. They wanted them to play. Have have meaning and swan. Storing the biggest fools that season the most for player that year. So you know. He's told everyone the most improved player really halls like a special place for him. Something he takes lightly. It was a really really nice compliment. They talked about the hard hat that they gave out. After every win which was an all white instruction half that was something that the player of the game whether at block shot or a big hit or in ceremony the post game. We'll get this production. How they put their name and a sharpie but it was more of a. What did you do to help the team. Really recognizing layers who maybe didn't shop scores sheep but who are just dedicated themselves to helping the team. These success those are moments that came together that they remember forever and become an integral part of their story on a way to winning out like the championship. Well this sort of ragtag bunch of guys did win an unlikely state regional championship in almost mighty ducks kind of way and joe as you talks to all these guys who played for jon. Cooper what connections. Were you able to make between cooper the coach of the lansing catholic cougars and cooper the coach of the stanley. Cup champion tampa bay. Lightning guesswork me. Talking to guys. That new men who've now that he hasn't changed much in terms of his personality he had kind of style which coach's house you through professional level versus coaching. high school. Kids a lot of the same kind of tenants but he had then he still uses today. Kerry that floss with me all the way through the nhl in onto the honestly. It doesn't really change. Human beings are human beings and everybody needs to be motivated. It's just finding the right way to motivate. Rose stood up in my living room and watch the game and cheer tampa. You're welcome. you're welcome for started. His rise

"He's the guy that brought that name to the team is in their first couple years their fortunes certainly increase north sort of putting money into the team and in their second year of non norris ownership the red wings go to their first stanley cup finals. And they lose to the blackhawks. Say this rivalry. The blackhawks is growing over the years. And so then the following year the year after their first stanley cup appearances the red. Which is the number now. We're talking about nineteen thirty. Four thirty five and the red wings have an absolutely awful season and so we've already talked about the idea that that you know we. We've certainly talked about it at length. How the tigers and lions working. We're having this incredible year and at this exact same moment that these other two teams are playing fantastic. The are just. Nobody's i mean there's very little information on them you they cover the game and tell you what happened. But there's you know there's there. I mean you've barrels of ink being used to cover the tigers Maybe coffee mugs full of ink to cover the lions. Because they're far less your food incredibly under report at this moment and then Spoonfuls of ink to cover the red wings at this point and the red wings knew that that you know adams norris You know they had to have no. I don't have anything for them saying. Oh we knew that we had to do it now but you can. But but the writing was on the wall that this was that detroit was experiencing this sports renaissance and they were not part of it if they were the only team that did not win then they would be left behind in those spoonfuls. Bank would become thimbles fall if if anything at all so we noted that The lions first game in the midst of it was was that in turning thirty four and allies first game. You happen to find like just a little blurb about it in this big section. All of out. The tigers was members. Give him that newspaper and it was a it was. The tigers clinched the pennant the previous day. That's why it was her. I believe her. It was her leave her father that had left it to her. Yeah and that's why he kathy because it was a tiger head to just won the pennant newspaper and they've yeah you comb through the entire sports section. There was like there wasn't even it was like the day after and they're like. Oh yeah there's you know football one day after the one day after they had played their first game in like they talk about the other team more years the star of the other team exactly on the tigers were the dominant coverage at this moment. Saying anything that the red wings did get was especially when they're having this awful year they're they're they're for all intents and purposes the red wings are irrelevant at the small. So if they didn't do it they wasn't gonna exactly so you can so even though there's no documented the necessarily evidence where the says document jack adams in in Jim norris saying well we need to win now..

"Scores in the nhl and he's just a tremendous playmaker and so now this is a big name guy for the red wings too get in so incident and also they get. They had this huge stroke of luck. Because in this season john ross roach is gonna really struggle okay. He's not so as for this first year has a red. He was really good in the second year. He's really struggling. But the stroke of luck comes in because The montreal canadians had a it must have been their third or fourth backup goalie like he was down down so far on the depth chart. His name is wolf queued. Okay and we got a picture of wealth. Oh there you go. You got coney up there in stream great call there you go so so anyways so seoul the Yeah we got to put a little thing a wealth. And i got a great little shot of him with the saw newspaper shot but anyway so we'll queued and i say lucky because john ross roach struggling terribly in the canadians prior to the season had loaned wealth cute the red wings because they they must they were stacked with so many good goalies that they had this guy. That like you know. He's better off being backup in detroit than a guy who's going to be fourth string in montreal. Canadiens loaned wilf queued. Excuse me to To the redwings just in just in case just as a backup goalie maybe you can get a couple of in a couple of games and and maybe develop this guy. But he's still property the canadians it's important understand. And so he's just basically the loan borrowed to the detroit red wings but so now he's called an action because john ross roach is just playing awfully. He's just playing terrible. And so yeah. I love this picture here. We got on the screen. Anybody they can see anybody that can't what it is. It's a picture of wealth playing goalie and there's would wall in front of the net. And so there's sean like that's how good he was. Spoiler alert with queued was literally the best goalie and the entire. Nhl in one thousand nine thirty three thirty four gear sauce so anyway. So will you know. He's you know he's basically on loan player from montreal. Any comes at detroit as a backup john. Ross wrote struggles and wilf steps in and he leads the team to the stanley cup championship. Oh okay that's how good he john jagannath's right. You know you got the number one goalie in the nhl. He takes his goal against averages. One point six four which is insane. Less like people might think that it was less scoring in back in these days. Intrusion up it was but they still. I forgot what the overall average was still pretty decent. I mean it was it was. It was maybe a half. Maybe a quarter to a half goal less than it is today. I mean it was. It wasn't that big of a deal. I mean it was like this one goal. Every game is will short for some wilford or it could be. I guess i should look. I just i just know him kill like this is i the name. Yes love could probably bill for it so anyways so he leaves in the stanley cup finals and the wings take so so guests who the wings meet in the fine ono who can any that guy who runs.
Smith, Red Wings win for 1st time in 9 games, beat Panthers
"The red wings have ended an eight game losing streak with a four one victory at Florida Giovanni Smith had a goal and an assist as Detroit handed the Panthers their first regulation loss of the season I feel really good from last game temple so we work so hard and to work hard not when and for tonight to work so hard to win it's just like it's amazing Marc Staal scored for the first time in Detroit and Thomas Greiss stopped thirty six shots stole second period goal opened the scoring and put the wings they had to stay before Smith provided the eventual game winner Alex Wennberg had the lone goal for the Panthers who became the last NHL team to lose in regulation I'm Dave very
REIGNY DAY FINALE
"All right big announcement. I told you there is an announcement. Maybe you heard. Maybe it would hurt. Because i think this probably only place. I'm going to say it. This is going to be the last rainy day podcast because i am abandoning zach. I'm abandoning the rain. And i'm leaving. I have taken a job In detroit or for the red wings and tigers. I won't be broadcasting games. I'm hoping to maybe keep doing that. But let's not get another personal stuff. Because i think it's better to burn out than fade away. Neil young one said. And so i know what you're wondering. Now who's gonna fill in In join zack. As he continues up these pains. And i don't know i don't know I don't know what will happen. What are you thinking right now. I mean i mean how could we possibly replace you It's been raining in ontario for the last year and a half. It's finally going to be sunny day without the rainy day. Podcast starting in twenty twenty one So bittersweet you know we had a great run. Here was excited to keep it going. But i'm looking forward to some some time away from the from the microphone busy good. This became a simon and garfunkel situation. And yes. I am. The paul simon in this group and will likely go on to be wildly successful whereas zach will have mrs robinson and that's about it as as far as his hits go. I'm moving on out. I will get into a few things in a sack. But i another thing. You're thinking as who's going to call the ring games. And i think it's gotta be used back and i know everyone's like well that can't call the games second kagame. He's never called a hockey game before bites little. Do you know zach as a matter of one time hopped on the mike in called. Play by play for the terreaux fire. Department verse d. n. y. Game and i have a couple of clips from that game to an active. Going gonna put these on. I'm going to put him on to just give you a feel for what's coming out the bye-bye now you guys may have you thinking. Wow we liked listening again. It was pretty okay on the games but it is. I think going to add a level of excitement. So here's just one clip. That i'll play now. Sixteen seconds left on the clock on panthers on. This is the most exhilarating game i've seen in my life. The sixteen bazan italians are going berserk. We had seven seven game. Twelve point four on the clock here at citizens business bank arena. What a saturday afternoon. Matinee team home crowd atmosphere s really pushed antero odd. Ny sdn y they. They might be a little bit rattled hearing this timid visiting atmosphere. S some there. I mean you future in this. I mean i'm used to calling games with sixteen or less people at them. So that's that's me up well to do this during a pandemic it's So that's one thing in my favor Like color man from that game is a one time rainy day. Podcast guest mas- mcelroy. I'm sure he would up and leave his current job with vegas come back and be the rain kellerman unpaid of course as you can tell by his performance in that obviously wouldn't pay him to do color I think he would probably leave in a heartbeat to that. So the tandems there. I mean the the obvious answers in place with myself on play by play nat color. So we'll see you know maybe Maybe i do have a few. Maybe though You know some other. Nhl teams here that call on this rainy day. Podcast they want me to call. Nhl games and the rain are still looking. I don't know you leave as well. Yeah maybe you know that could volt. Nbc job doc. Emrick guy retired. Maybe they hear this. They just kind of me up to that job So something to think about moving forward. So let's wrap up here. i do you know. There's a lot of people that i like. That i've said to so i'm not gonna do it here But this podcast has been an absolute blast. And so i do want to thank everyone who has lessons This is been a ton of fun of once. We got into the rhythm of it. And i think we did a good thing here with this. I'm really gonna miss call in the ring games like calling the game. Not being able to do that consistently is very bitter sweet. I guess it's just bitter. It's not sweet leaving bittersweet but calling. The game's not not being able to do that next year. It's tough But the just gonna be here. And i'm not going to get into because it's really not any your business you listeners. But i But i am going to miss all of you. I love doing this. Podcast and i love working for the rain and you never know. Maybe i'll see again. Maybe i won't But i just thank you for listening and we have had a lot of fun doing this. Podcast i think zach. Have you know. I have a lot of funded. Didn't really know what to expect when a lot better than it did. In our trial run in two thousand eighteen nineteen so is it was really cool to kind of see what it turned into to be able to have some really cool guests on some of our our players our top prospects you know sharing some stories and having fun. I thought that we took it in our own direction. Didn't care what anyone else thought. And i liked that. We had the chance to do that. Yeah i agree so again. Thank you to all of you. Thank you to our supporters of his reign staff year. And darren glenn we're We're big supporters and in the as well mike and kelly cheesman was big friend of the program we We always appreciated that support. But we're going to put this thing to bed. The rainy day podcast is gonna go out of the world just like it came in which is very mysteriously and very auspiciously. So that's how that's how we're gonna leave this zach good luck. I'm sure you'll work your release another month but i. I don't know maybe leave. Maybe won't be able to do it without me. I have kind of been You've been riding my coattails this organization for long enough. Maybe the time is up sharply in the local paper to try and replace that how we hire down these days just like a like a wanted like wanted middle aged five gaster with sas. I think you should open auditions open. Auditions zach a week long. Tweet year your audition at rain. Insider and i will be happy to listen to all audition tapes. That are tweeted to me. I think that's a great idea. Degraded him all right everyone. It has been a blast. We'll talk to you later. Maybe probably not for now is just goodbye.
Where do the Cowboys go from here? To the trade deadline — but as sellers instead of buyers
"The Cowboys easier to write about when they win or when they lose? Uh, they're easy to write about what they lose. When they win. People feel good. You sell more newspapers when they win. That's a proven thing. So there's that. But, man what you know now, sometimes when they're bad, they're just not interested. And they just kind of go away. Like I don't know what it's like to right about when the Detroit Lions are bad. They probably just people are waiting for the Red Wings to drop the puck. But when the Cowboys are bad, there's usually nine different things in Iraq, And this year there, there might be that might be multiplied. So there's you can just pick out of a hat. And and and go from there. What is Jerry? June Jones do now? You know, one of the really disappointments with serious disappointments, obviously of code. But one of the rial lighter disappointments of this year is that he doesn't do press conferences after every game, because I can't imagine. What level he would have reached yesterday. Um, you know, it's Tze one thing to get beat up by Seattle or airy Arizona's offense. They can't stop the run. With anybody, not the Washington football team. They run for over 200 yards. And if you want to pick one area of the Cowboys that does not beat up my injuries. Their front seven They've got Jalen Smith. They got banned arrest. They've got the Marcus Lords they've got. They've got elegance. They got Everson Griffen. They got Tyrone Crawford. They got guys were supposed to be there, and they can't tackle anybody. And then you have the hit on Andy Dalton and that nobody seems to concern about the chief shot by Jon Bostic. That wasn't it took the announcers of minutes to kind of recognize, but they did eventually, So okay, that's that's a brutal Yep. Be Amari Cooper is standing there and there's others around there had to be a number of players see it. I would think the entire offensive line and to see it. On nothing. Nothing at all. I mean, I can't imagine. If that was Dad getting hit like that that they wouldn't have done something but that that just pointed to the the give up factor of this team they looked like in the first quarter. They're out there to see when it's going to go badly, and you know how much it's going to feel like a ground hog day. They got nothing on either side of the ball, but quitting is worse than losing to him. Yeah. And of course, coaches will always and players will fight. You didn't quit. Everybody has a great attitude by when you see something like that, and when you see it That And when you see a team that just gets gassed in the run and announcers every week, whether it's the money, night crew or yesterday was was Moose. Ah lot of destroyed job back and they get very quickly. The out of position on these place. They really get outflanked quickly without defense. I mean, they're they're talking around the fact that team looks very poorly prepared and has no idea what to do in the players. Never respond if Jerry had to do over coaching. Well, I mean, that's what What was it about Mike McCarthy flying in and spending one night at the Jones house and all they were just so wowed by this guy. They couldn't believe it. Now, what have you seen in any game that he brings? You didn't call the plays so anytime the offense was playing well earlier in the year, That's Kellen Moore is offense. So what is he doing over there that he brings Emily brought in all these coaches? Guys he had in Green Bay 10 years ago. Mike Nolan, who hired him 20 years ago. It's just this. This cronyism tied coaching staff. And you wonder, and you wonder how much Jerry thought about like a mat rule. He mentioned Matt Rule one time last December, just after Baylor played in the Big 12 championship game. What a great young coach to thought. Matt Rhule wass. And you're Matt Rhule took over a team that was just God awful and got ready Cam Newton, and they released whatever they are three and four. They compete. Uh, yeah. I mean, I don't know. I don't know that he wouldn't like to rethink this lot. Now it's the first year so I think both the pandemic the DAC injury, the offensive line being completely wiped out. Those going allow the coaches to skate for year. But he has to be thinking this. This may have been a Terrible higher. The Cowboys buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. You know, I don't think they have a lot to sell. I heard somebody saying trade one of their wide receivers. They don't need that many hundreds of it. That's the one thing they have is good wide receivers. You want to trade one of those go You know, Draft Ah, linebacker with a neck injury. That's what that's what excites you about rebuilding the team. I don't think they will do much. There's certainly not Myers, they get by. I mean, I don't know why in the world you would add. Do it to a terrible collection of talent as this many injuries, but I don't expect him to do a lot, actually.
Portland suspect shot dead by police during arrest

"University's Michael at School of business. University, of Michigan, as well as Oakland University to understand of the impact that we're making. So so now when we talked a little bit earlier about. All of that Were were now starting to to quantify The effort in the time end funding? What the impact right. Because as as. Budgets continue to be looked at in understood as to where we should be you know worship, where should be allocating dollars and how should we appropriately supporting the community and more importantly how do we? How do we? Make the biggest impact for the the the individuals that are here in Detroit in in in the Metro Detroit area We have to look at. All of those things. So it's not just here's a check in. Let's go. It's understanding with the boys and Girls Club. For example, what are the kids walk right in? It's working with parks and well, how do we do this the right way? In store instead of just making up something hoping that it lands and and so I would say that of anything that we're doing. Learn Place Score. I'm the most passionate about right now because it is. It is truly going to be something that I think we'll set our franchise up for many years of success, not only when it comes to community impact but also in helping us grow the game end end. Ideally at in the end creating that future fans for for our franchise for for many years to count. I have to say Kevin I am always drawn towards people in this industry that have a passion for what they do and it comes across in the way they speak about their role and their team and their organization, and so this has been a great great great conversation for me personally because I don't you can feel your passion come through and how much of an impact you're making I think that's something that's inspiring for the audience to listen to. "Right of passage like we had a huge tournaments and everybody everybody would know every player in the NHL because they played the games and now as a way for them to get the introduction to it like everybody wanted to be the Red Wings with federal is Erman and that team was incredible. So it's just funny to think of it like that's another way to get impact is through all the community events you're talking about almost introduction through an east sports almost kind of platform as well. With the bucks and Red Wings, you've been a team spokesperson you've managed obviously huge events. You've built partnerships in the community you've handled huge budgets we can go on and on and on. We all have parts of job that we love and we have parts of our jobs that are a little bit more of a struggle. What part of your job was it like harder for you to get into a comfort zone? What with may be pushed you out of your area? That made you had to focus on a little bit more to really master that art form. I would say that being a subject matter expert in the room has been something that. has taken a little while for me to to acclimate to. Eat were often. We know bits and pieces of our job right now, we know the part that we need to know in the role that I'm in. Now I have to know so much more about. What each individual person on my team is is doing. But also what? Other franchises are doing in the market what other businesses in Our doing. Our market but as well as on a national or international scale. and. Really be able to answer the questions that that come at me at sometimes a rapid pace in so. That that shift of. Knowing kind of knowing your lane right to. Knowing, having to know and be the subject matter expert ask for the organization that's relied upon to to give those those answers that that folks are looking for. That's been. It's been a interesting adjustment in something that. has taken a little bit of time for me to to feel comfortable with than and I would say that you'll probably hear that from a lot of folks who say once you get into a this role where you're you're now leading a team and you're you know you're you're you're being tasked with the ability to to. Guide the path within within your space It takes a little while to get used to. Yeah I agree going from being an individual contributor why certain things I had to do, and at the end of the day I had completed them or whatever, that may be being a manager who had set strategy do reviews and hire, and fire, and all those kind of things. That's a that's a big change So let's talk about that part about hiring staff. You obviously have mentioned your team many times you. Obviously have developed a group that you work. Well with how do you do that? How do you? What do you look for? How do you identify people? Because if you post a job I'm sure you're getting a lot of applicants how do you kind of frame your mind around what you're looking for and how somebody can stand out for the right reasons and catch your attention and become a part of your team? Well, we've hit on earlier on a big thing for me is a solid understanding of. This world and and industry bests. We're not going to be the best at everything and we can't think we're we can ever think we are we are right. We always have to challenge ourselves to be better and so a solid understanding of that world within which were working in and and and the industry as a whole is really helpful. Being engaging in conversation is another thing that I really look for in a in folks says were looking to fill positions and Very lucky in my time here with the wings that I haven't had to fill many positions which has been great. and. Engaging in a conversation. In being. Being, able to. Read a room and understand. This is how I need to. This is how I need to approach the way that we're. GonNa be talking to each other. That's very helpful And I would say as a as a last kind of. Quality is. Being down to Earth with a with a really good sense of humor. Were often time. In scenarios where it's it's tough and. In when you're thinking about What are we going to do next for the organization to make sure that we're in the community and you know how do we? Understand that sometimes things aren't going to go away. And we may be really passionate about something but for one reason or another were unable to get it accomplished because of. Reasons or understandings that are outside of our of our purview. So The ability to kind of be down to Earth and I am one hundred percent in the the lanes like a solid sense of humor. Will will get you far at least in my world. Because I've I oftentimes throw out a lot of jokes that don't land. I tend to get I tend to get a sneaker or snare from from a a teammate of or two of mine but. But just the ability to kind of break it up. And it goes back to the notion of worrying entertainment right? We're here to have fun. we're here to in particularly in community relations were here to. To make people smile to make a positive impact on the community end to to hopefully create a ripple effects for a child that that may have otherwise felt like they didn't belong or.

"Have our eyes open if the difficult time hours or so used to being able to interact? And maybe help or go somewhere. I don't know how you guys are feeling that to me is the most difficult thing is to not to sail. Okay there somewhere. We can go and go help out or pitch in. I guess we're going to have to find ways to do it. In in other methods agree that you know what credit is such a wonderful message. I can. That was interesting. That's the first thing that my wife said to me on on on Day web quarantine cheese and she's we'd put the kids to bed and she was sort of sitting there having teen sort of staring off into space outside the window and I'm like what's the matter she said. I just can't imagine being someone who's in an abusive relationship right now and physically cannot walk out the door. They can't leave. They are forced. And I know that there have been efforts. And I've read about a a bunch. Jeff and as you know for anyone that's been on the forefront of a lot of our communities say they're making efforts to bring places where you can go so I don't anything specific in front of me to point to but my heart goes out to those kind of situations and I think that's something that you know all the different good things that will come out of this environment there are there are equally negative. And that's one I think we can't let go and we have to make sure that you know somebody's there to help and for people who feel helpless relationship where they feel. They can't get out. We gotta find a way to to make sure that there's a place for them to go because at that scares me the as as this turns from three weeks to month or two months. Who knows what it's GonNa be that that'll be something that we have to be on top of for sure. It's it's a fantastic thing you do in coordination with the Edmonton Police. Because the more people that make everybody aware of it or say this is a concern. The more chance there is of something positive getting done absolutely. It's a hard pivot after that however Craig I'm skeptical at Best Lia that there will be any hockey in the upcoming months I've been wrong plenty in my life. I've never wanted to be wrong but this time. I really do want to be wrong. Where are you on this side of the Of the conversation. I'm with you Jeff. I I've been pretty realistic as my wife will tell you I. I'm pretty serious realist. I research I read a lot and look at patterns in things that have gone other. Where other places and right from the beginning of this. It's been a huge concern that you know. I think it's naive for us to think that it'll be any different. I think here in in Canada. We've done a fairly good job as you know in our league in our business were tied to the United States to which I think is is GonNa be on the beginning of of some serious problems. So I'd like to be positive. Jefferson think that You know even two months the span might be enough. But I I'm. I'm actually more concerned about next year. And I know from the League's perspective you know. All the League's ultimately love to see a completion of having the Stanley Cup having the NBA Championship. But I'm at this point quite frankly really nervous about even getting next year on the goal I just think with a look at the timelines from around the world and how this has gone on. I don't see a an opportunity for us to be in a position where you can hold these events and even if you have them without fans in the stands which as you know Elliott that doesn't necessarily create a business model that works for anyone either but even if you're able to do that and then from television perspective I think our ratings would be the best that they've been at any point but I just don't see how you coordinate that and keep the the health and wellness of of all the people involved with it To a level that that's safe enough so jeff I'd love to say you know maybe we'll get a playoff tournament going in August and finish this thing off and then get started in October but man. I hope we're right in that regard but I'm really scared that we might get to September October and still not have a sense of when we could get started. I just decided to look at it this way. I don't think we're GONNA have any idea about where we're going to at least June. Yeah so I'm just saying the best I can to keep saying until the beginning of June to try to enjoy life at home as much as I possibly can and I'll see where we are then because the uncertainties the toughest. But we just don't know forget about the life and death that is at the forefront. I mean that's where every time you have a thought or discussion on sports go well. What does that even matter? You know so. Putting this first and foremost did since the health of people that mattered the most. But if you are looking ahead I think it is important from a mental standpoint to not go into every day going okay while I was going to be over next week or not. I think you're right. Elliot you have to have a long-term scope and just say this is the way it's GonNa be well in you know take July first as a as a reset button and see where we are if you can do that. Then like we just talked about with the kids in school or your activities or your energy or your workouts. Whatever you to say. This is the norm that we have to create a pattern that allows you to be feeling mentally sharp and not depressed to not upset I think that's a hard challenge for everyone in everybody will handle it differently and I think even my mother who's in the Chelsea Park in London who now they're going to quarantine them for another fourteen days and now she's eighty four years old. She's on her own and for the most part her life hadn't changed all that much because she didn't do all that much From a going out perspective but not being able to go to church on Sunday not being able to go down now to have dinner and lunch and you know you worry about someone alone like that and even my sister. Christy lives on her own. You know all of a sudden three months of just sitting in your house by yourself. Talking is out in all those great concern. So I think that's the right mentality. Elliot to just have it in your mind that we gotta look forward to the July area and sort of reevaluate where we're going to be that Craig. We all know your great analysts. I.

"The podcast Elliott as we continue check ins around the sports net in hockey night in Canada Camp. Here's a good news story Greg's Simpson is now a grandfather similar. Welcome the PODCAST and congratulations. How does that feel other than perhaps maybe a little bit old? Yeah well thanks Jeff. Thanks Elliott that you all. It's been a great ray of light and sunshine and for our family everybody involved Dylan in Haley. Welcome Stevie on April first of all as you know as Dylan said to have a baby in the middle of a pandemic on April Fools Day. It's quite a combination but as you can imagine it's you know we're all nervous of how long heard her due date. I believe is today and so To have her a few days earlier Sort of settles. Everybody down. Allow things to happen before it gets worse. So we're all just absolutely thrilled Craig. I'm curious how many people have said to dylan or to Haley that Stevie and thirteen years. We'll be officially called a quarantine. Yeah absolutely yeah. I think there's no question about that. And you know. The uniqueness of them of the whole process hit them. What in like everybody will March Eleventh March Twelfth in that range? Where at all of a sudden it was realized. Okay the Cleveland monsters who he plays. Four Columbus's foreign team had a nine day a trip Plan you know on the road trip so There is a lot of nervousness there he was going to be gone and on the road and not quite as accessible as an NHL player because most of the Times they bust so the fact that that all changed. I think sort of changed their perspective. You can imagine guises in a when you're waiting for your first child. The thoughts of for Haley. Her Mom For Dylan his mom being able to come in and maybe be a part of it than the fact that they ended up just being in isolation on their own on some ways was difficult for them but another I just kept saying Dylan. This is beautiful. It's it's about you too and about you to sharing this moment together and overall you know wet so well and They're just thrilled now. And it's better than sitting in a in an apartment and looking at a five day old all day. You know. There's so much fun. They change every day. So it's a pretty exciting time for both of them You're fifty three years old. You look terrific. I'm almost fifty. I looked like a bag of chips. Like what's it like I? I'm curious I have an eight year old so I I'm not anywhere. Close to becoming a grandparent. But you know I remember my father telling me how excited he was to be a grandfather. But it's weird hearing grandfather harvey in front of Your Name Your Grandfather Craig now. How does that feel? I know while you know what feel very proud. And the year your firstborn was Dylan. The back in nineteen ninety-three into to have him have the first child and be in a position where it hopefully sooner rather than later get to share in the joy of that is amazing and as you know. Elliott in a. We have a six year old as well so sammy is now an aunt which I think is probably more strange for her of is for me. She she kept saying. I'm not sure I WANNA be this ad thing. Dad I'm not sure I can handle that but I'm also having Samantha. This last six years has kept me feeling young and feeling energized and you don't take for granted I think going through it again. You know with another opportunity to have a little one around as giving you the given me anyways the sense of you know. How much different is this time? I'm not in my late Twenties early thirties. I was in my late. Forties early fifties in dealing with the second time around. I think I have a greater appreciation for it. And I can't wait for the opportunity to have a grandchild I mean I even said the Dylan Haley. Jamie and I were looking at the pictures three days later goal. My Gosh like she's changed so much though We have no idea when they get a chance to actually see her but It'll be amazing. How much she would have changed. I just couldn't be happier. It's a This has all been such a change in I. I looked at the timing Jeff Elliot and I thought we have our last game April Force in Toronto and then have a few days before in planning pre planning. I thought I gonNA leave that Sunday. Open to see if maybe even fly into Cleveland and if she is over has arrived get there while it worked perfectly but as we know. That's all that's all out the window. Okay similar me ask you the Canadian question then. Left shot or shot. What is she? She's got to be? A righty I hope. But Dylan. Dylan's a lefty. He's a lefty both in hockey and golf And so you know. He's a unique one in that regard. So maybe those genes will wear off Riley are other sons righty Kennedy or daughters. Righty Samantha's already as well. So I take the writings have a chance. Maybe to win out. You know what I thought you're GONNA ask when she's able to play for. The Olympic Team Michigan to play for the US. All that's true. Yes got an American good one Canadian Dad and born in the USA so that that that will be an interesting intriguing time so We got lots of time to sink in. We'll have to see where it leads to for sure will simmer. Just what's yeah? What's keeping you busy? Yeah while as we sit and talk. Now we have our scheduled I'm officially now a grade one teacher and he's having an. I will start our grade one class in we usually go for about an hour and then have a little lunch break in an hour or another half hour forty five minutes and then go outside for quote unquote recess. We've just tried as best we can to. You know. Make some routine found early on. You know this all happened for us. I'm not sure what your schooling was in In Ontario but our spring break was the twenty third week and so we had the week before when we didn't Go everything was closed off and then we had spring break. So we've Kinda take a little departure from getting back into the school and just found that you know the kids love some free time but they also are really struggling a bit without having that routine and you take for granted. You know Jesse's in grade seven he's twelve and a half years old and just missing the fact of going to school every day in interacting and working and having some real regiment to your day I think everybody from whom I've talked to in the other families you know you. Maybe took that for granted just how important that was for the kids routine in their mental health. So we've tried in the last seven to ten days to get on more of a schedule and just get them into the mindset of you know. Even at times with Samantha Right. Now she's GonNa Dad. Can I sit on your lap? And did I go hon? Were in school right now. Known you we got another fourteen hours where you can be cuddling sitting on me and watching something but again just trying to get them back to some normalcy. So it's been challenging. I must say I have an incredible amount of respect My our daughter. Kennedy is a teacher and she got a placement literally in the last two weeks before the Everything was canceled but they've kept her on and she's doing online teaching and I'm really impressed. With how the schools have tried to handle it and tried to bring some normalcy. And try to help families you know. We're we're very fortunate that we have lots of space. We have lots of technology to do things with the kids. The thing I'm concerned how many families who don't have that in are struggling to keep the kids busy. A small enclosed area without the kind of you know means having communication. I think that to me is probably the biggest fear and we don't take that for granted all here the the situation where you know. I think Craig that so well said because we're lucky to like our school it gives given Max Three online classes a day which makes a huge difference. And it's the same rules for us like you have to prepare from nine. Am to three PM. You're in school the whole day and your task Nascar then. We're not giving her that log. Spring he gets break like no video games no IPAD during that time and now. The weather's gotten a bit better so we can go outside and we can play catch and we played some cornhole this morning. But generally I don't know about you but I'm correct like from nine to three. We try to act like we're in school as much as possible and thank goodness. They provided some online courses for it. You know you know I live in Edmonton. Gosh the last two days. We've had snowfalls. I'm looking I'm looking out my front. I've got abode three and a half feet of snow on our front yard. That's still got to go and huge mound. So that's been a challenge as well. I think the the weather you know my Younger Son Riley who's finishing up at asu online in a Arizona State. I'm looking at him and he's facetime in me and it's like thirty degrees and sitting outside while at least you can go in the backyard and enjoy the weather. That's been a challenge year West because the weather has been you know not really turn and I think what that does at least now. Our property in our backyard becomes open. I don't know if you saw earlier. We posted Jesse and Sammy had little Ski Hill. Going down the back side so they made the best of our environment. And I think that's what's important but you know the thing guys that really concerns me the most and you know not to be too somber and serious note but Jamie and I have talked so much of you know not under estimating how difficult is there are so many families that you know. My worry is domestic violence and kids who have been in tough situations. Now who are stock can families who are stress than mother and father who are struggling to make ends meet and if we can do anything around our society is to try to protect those in. This is going to be for me guys. The biggest challenge going forward is to protect some of those who can't be protected themselves and I talked with the business friend. Edmonton is talking with the chief of police in no sadly one of their biggest things need not one of the biggest thing they're dealing with now is domestic incidents and that's one of the things that it's just flooding into their network. And so you know that concerns me alive. I think we have to be aware that..

"No wool. Explain the story around a so. Okay well it looks like in this story all right sure. There's a there's a. There's a few in there but it's a great pitcher great product I think. Part of being a General Manager you got to sell a little bit when it comes time to try to get a deal down here to negotiate a contract so we've all got a little bit of salesman when you become a manager in the league you got a little bit of salesman and you I love that answer and can Thank you so much for your time before we let you go one question because you mentioned Sergei Federov A couple of moments ago. He's come up a couple of different times in the interview And I asked you about writing a book before one thing that I would love to know. If Ken Hall on ever wrote a book I was told that a nineteen eighty-nine after Detroit took Sergei Federov fourth-round. I think it was either in the fifth where you guys took Akasha believe or in the fifth. We took Dallas Drake. There was some discussion at the table about taking Pavel burry. How close were Detroit to getting both Federer off and Beret at the draft We were going to take ray on her. Fifth picks a meal Smith. The chief scout walked up to the desk central scowling desk and asked if it was a different time we know all that now and they had told come back to the table and said if we take pavel burry. It's going to be an ineligible pick. We took somebody else and then Christopher Rostrum who was eropean. Scott spent the next thirty five minutes convincing. Jim Devil Anna when Neil Smith to take burry because he had to play I think seven or nine games in the Russian men's leaked to be eligible for any rounds and if he played last he was only in the three first three rounds. We were GONNA take on pick six and two picks before we picked Vancouver. Took them improved? What Christa Rostrum was convincing us. That we could so it would have been something else Federov and Berry but we did take. Constantine of in the eleventh round. Certainly that eighty nine draft for the red wings getting Constantina Drums Federer of all in the same draft he added added to Steve. Eisman really changed the fortunes and the history of hockey in Detroit Sir. Twenty years so would have been nice to have the two of them together but feel fortunate with all the ones. That's all the players we did. Get three in your book can. Yeah that'd be very started scouting and eighty five eighty six so I went to the world junior championships in Alaska that year and they had a line of burry. Fedor oven mogilny and They were dancing. They won the gold medal. At the first time I'd ever seen all those players play and the great job by Neil Smith and KRISTA rostrum those the two people responsible for Nicholas Being drafted in the third round by the by the Detroit Red Wings so Meal Smith did a fabulous job as the chief scout the Detroit redwings and then obviously went onto a wonderful career with the New York Rangers. So that story definitely's GonNa go on the book. It was a great day for the REDWING FRANCHISE. I had a bit part Neil Smith Than Jim. Devlin KRISTA rostrum had the lead parts. Great Stories Listen. You've parked a Lotta time for us today. Thank you so much. This has been a delight. Thanks so much. Thanks guys all right Elliot. Everybody wants to know because it is a great one. What's the vacuum cleaner story? So Ken Holland's last year is a pro was eighty four eighty five. He played four. Nhl Games he was drafted by the police in one thousand. Nine hundred seventy five. Who did he play for the American Hockey League Adirondack First Broome county dusters the broome county dusters in the broome dusters and then he went to Hartford's organization where he played one game. And then you went to Detroit where he played his last three and his last season was eighty forty five. He was a member of the Adirondack Red Wings and it wasn't going anywhere for him and he was deciding the next phase of his life and at that time also he's coming up on being thirty years old so his mother wanted him to be a vacuum cleaner salesman. She sent him an and she also promised him to be her first sale. He's thinking about it and basically what happened was the red wings. Made them the offer to become a western Canada scout and that's where his career as executive began. But that's how close he was to becoming a vacuum salesman. And that's why I asked the question. I think he was also pitched. At a number of people from his family would buy vacuums. Like five or six people are already lined up to buy vacuums. We had a base to start working from that. This they really wanted Ken to sell vacuums. And get out of this crazy Hockey lifestyle. Great story you know. It was on that broome county team by the way and that was a slugging. Lee. Paul Stewart was Was was on that team. I remember talking to We there's some which you get on. The podcast has H on pause right now for great stories because he was the first one to tell me about Ken. as a goaltender in the In the minors through it'd be a great guest. Thanks Ken Holland for stopping by the podcast today and thanks to the Edmonton oilers. For making him available we turn our attention now to one of our own Eliot Friedman. I'll tell you what Craig Simpson and Jim Houston mentioned. Jim Going back to that. Eighty four game on Global Sports Sault greyhounds in Oshawa generals Jim Houston and Craig. Simpson have been mainstays on hockey night in Canada. For a number of years The are the Cadillac Broadcast Cruz. Born I think Craig Simpson. I think of someone that took so much physical punishment in the NHL just to stay just to stay in the game. And I think of someone who probably spent far too long in physical pain then. He should've considering how skilled hockey player. He was our colleague. Craig Simpson when I say that name. What comes the Elliott? Friedman's mind? We did a piece on preparing for the play offs years ago and we talked to the equipment guys in Edmonton who obviously were very well known. Berry Stafford being one of them and he talked about all of the extra padding that he had to put underneath of Craig's Simpson's Jersey because they knew the abuse that he was to take in front of the net and that was one of the things he really talked about was how much extra work he had to do with Simpson stuff so he would be able to withstand the punishment. So when I think of Craig I think of that conversation Craig. Simpson has a lot of different titles and has had a lot of different titles In his time player broadcaster father. But he's added another title. Let's find out what that is. Here's Craig Simpson.

"Coach tip it Broke them up and had Leeann centering one line connor centering other lines. So you got to superstars and you and you can do so many things with them that I feel so fortunate to be manager of a team that has to play twenty three and twenty four years old just turned twenty three and twenty four late slate last year and early this year so the best years are still ahead of them and Both great great players. I wouldn't WanNa have a vote but I feel very very fortunate to be able to manage a team that both are on the team. Can I want to ask about you? Blue Line and you talked about players like you know Evan. Bouchard in Phila- Broberg a couple of seconds ago and those players that are on the horizon two players on your Blue Line this season. I think really moved that Blue Line along. Maybe considerate found money. Maybe they're right on track. I'm not sure where you had them in your mind. But in your words what did Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones do this back in the season well Jeff great question when I took over here on? May the six and met with the people here. They talked about Ethan Bear Caleb Jones William Legacies and the way Bouchard had played so I think we had seven players defense on one way contracts. I wanted to create an opportunity so and also we needed some caps basically by sequeira and he went from five five. Kept number two to five on a BIOS. We opened up three million dollars of cap space which we went out and signed some three four. Reads it around a million bucks and then we went to training camp and early on Ethan Bear. Sorta grabbed out spot and found some chemistry found real good chemistry with Darnell nurse and he's been top four minutes all year long in some. He's been in our top two in terms of minutes played so And then when the cleft got injured in February or whatever. We're losing the guy that was playing the most minutes on our team. You're never really sure. Caleb Jones stepped in there and played in our top four and played great. So I think you've nailed it. You know great job by the order scouts from the past if you think about think. I'm not sure what you're around four five and six. They took their Jones and Marino. Unfortunately we couldn't sign Marina. We traded him to Pittsburgh. But you got three. Nhl Defense but in round four five and six of great job by the by the order scouts in a pass drafting in order to be competitive a salary cap world. You gotTa have a push of young kids for a variety reasons but obviously you need some players on the team that can really contribute either. They're on entry level contracts with Iran. Low second contracts and. That's what certainly what what Ethan Beer ditz rest and also also Caleb Jones so both. They're young mobile PUCK MOVING DEFENSEMAN AUTHOR. Competitive Kayla. Jones is really. He played left defense or right defense. We played them quite a bit on defense at times. When you got a guy that can play left and right now. You can carry seven cents. But if you've got a defense when you're comfortable playing right or left. Carrie meek defense just because if you lose a righty. He can slight overweight. If you lose a left he can slide over on the left. So certainly Caleb gives us some versatility in some depth the not only for this year but heading into next year but very good surprises for the Edmonton oilers. Pleasant surprises for me. It's I'm just curious about your relationship with mcdavid. You know you start and we find out he's got this significant injury which he battles very impressively from to get back but one thing I've heard is that you've really worked hard on creating a relationship with him through his agent Jeff Jackson because you know you recognize his importance and you recognize the two of. You are going to have to do this together. How do you go about that? How does your relationship work? First off? Coach Tippett talks to Connor. Everyday you know and I know he talks to. Leeann one of the things that I've been in the world that we live in today the communication between the coach and the player and you're top players so important and it's one of Dave Tippett strengths as a coach Mike. Managing Salafi really is. I want the players to understand the coaches their direct. He's they're bossy up the ice time he makes the line combinations. Since I'm in charge of the twenty three man rosters as. Who's on the team? I work with the coach and talk about it but I think it's important that the players understand that. The coaches got the authority to play people. Lots or not play people as much so my relationship with connor is. I'm not talking to him on an everyday basis. I talked to him over. The course of the year St Nicholas terms that are bird with the three captains that I had in Detroit three or four times a year. I'd have a called a business. Meteoric call him in and we talk about leading up to July for leading up to the draft. Get The captain's opinion abode or the end of the season when our season was over shortly thereafter spent two or three hours one day getting the captain's perspective as to what he thinks are team heading into the offseason as you during the season. If you're floundering at some point time maybe get a get a feeling. Certainly two or three weeks before the trade deadline to meet with the captain to get his opinion. I have talked a lot to Jeff Jackson not as much to connor but enough to connor and know what he's thinking I know what But his thoughts are about the team and you know talk a little bit but at the end of the day the person that has done a great job of building up a really everyday relationship with connor is Dave Tip Bob. Gainey wants An interview talked-about handling different players and he said You'RE GONNA be a pretty dismal team if you don't have any difficult players to handle because good players are not easy to handle in your experience now with Edmonson and of course previous with Detroit. Is that an accurate statement. I ANYTHING BOB GAINEY SAYS I agree with the guy's been a managers meant he's in his vision and and I mean he was talking about things in the game fifteen years ago that we're doing today at the managers level soul dealing with top players. You know first off. It's to coach. You get back to the coaches is there every day in the coaches got A. There's a fine line between pushing and pulling back and trying to figure out a way to get the most out of each individual player and then the team. I think most if not all the best players that I've dealt with either in in Edmonton in Detroit. They WANNA win. They're motivated to win. They push in. What makes them great number one? Obviously their skillset. They've got a great skill set. But what separates them to go to? The upper tier is the mental toughness. The determination the desire to be better than everybody else and so. You got a harness that the coach the manager have to make sure that it's harnessed. I kind of think back to the relationship between Steve Eisenman and Scotty Bowman and house. Steve wanted to win. Scotty wanted the team to play a certain way. When Steve was all in everybody else was all in so. I just think that the great young players coming through peewee and through Banham and through midget and through whether it's college or Europe or major junior hockey they've been superstars and they continue to be superstars. Now they're gonNA come in. They might play a little bit less ice time where you want them to make adjustments to their game and that's where you gotta communicate and work that player but the great players. They're great for reason. And certainly you got to be very respectful of their skill. Set of their determination of what they want to accomplish. Because the bottom line is they want the same thing that we do they wanNA THEY WANNA win. We got us. Make sure that everybody is on the same page. Because ultimately it is a team and We have to win as a team. Everybody's got a different role. Bigger roles lesser roles. It needs to be a team can win you. I met with the oilers as a group at the beginning of training camp this year. Some people have told me you gave a really good talk about how Detroit was once a down team and how they built themselves into a champion and a number of people who are in that room and they told me I could never say who they were said. It was a really inspiring excellent speech that explained to everybody how it was going to happen and how important everybody was. Can you give us an idea of what you told them? When I knew that was near the end in Detroit for me they know Steve is minute. Step down and I talked to Chris. I I just know it's time you. I just knew it was time. I had an unbelievable run and I wasn't sure where I was going with my career. The Owners in Detroit Mississippi Chris me an incredible offer to stay there as senior vice president and I talked to Steve. Steve wanted me to stay and I had to decide. If that's certainly a possibility because I'd been with the Red Wings for thirty six years and then when this opportunity came and I met with Bob. Nicholson talked about going to going to Edmonton. You know everybody's in the game. I think I thas speech theory. We're all in the game. We want to win the Stanley Cup or compete for the Stanley Cup. And you WANNA BELIEVE. You've got a chance if you play your very best. That is good enough to be better than everybody else. In the last three years in Detroit we had missed the playoffs and we have twenty five years making the playoffs and when you make the playoffs you got a chance and then and I just talked about the building of of the redwings late eighties. Early nineties how we built into a team. And you know the confidence that I just. You know for me personally. I I haven't been you know talked about how exciting and dino they know from two years ago when they think the beat San Jose in the first round and lost Anaheim. How exciting the playoffs are you want to be in that tournament every year? How every city you know you watch the Stanley Cup playoffs in the final four in the finals and you see people outside the building in the people on the streets and there and it's overflowing in the energy of the city and I remember when Edmonton knocked us out no five zero six one hundred twenty five one hundred twenty six points out game six. Thank you remember game six. We were up one nothing after two periods and then they scored to make it one one and then there was just an onslaught of the motion from the fans pouring out and and the orders cranked it up and then they knocked Stanley Cup. Playoff.

"Are you Dana White? You saw that right. Yes he's coming up with. Us coming up with with more the the updated reality version of mortal Kombat who would be the NHL's subzero. Ooh great question. That's a great question for twitter. That's a good point. Jeff we can let the twitter's answer who the NHL version of sub zero is the wrestlemainia ratings. Were apparently really good. I haven't seen them. I was told that no surprise. I watched it. I go up and down resting but I watched it ache because there's not much else to watch and be because I wanted to see what they would do you know. How can you make something that has your atmosphere taken away entertaining and exciting and I think those guys deserve a lot of credit? I thought they did the best that they absolutely could. But like I look at the USC thing and I look at the wwe ratings. As I've been told they are when we're hearing that. Mlb WANTS TO START UP AND MAY IN PHOENIX. Which I think is a crazy plan. I don't think they're going to be able to do that at all. But I understand why everybody's saying we have to be ready when we're allowed to do it because people are going to be starving for something to watch and the moment you're told you're allowed to do it you're GonNa have to flick your switch like that you have the captive audience and you have. C. is going forward with UFC. Two forty nine Tony Ferguson. And just engage he. The car looks really good. I'll just be blunt. Looks like a really good card. On on April the eighteenth era going forward with it. We saw Dana White deer point musing about fighter island Mortal Kombat Island. Whatever you WANNA call it and flying fighters in putting on fights Every week because you know that you will have a captive audience right now. The you have sports fans right now. That are thirsty for anything right now. Just give us something new baseball fans football fans basketball FANS HOCKEY FANS NASCAR. Whatever gives us something and we will go. You will have everybody's attention so I'm not surprised. Wrestlemanias numbers are good. I won't be surprised if you have see to. Forty nine with Ferguson engage. He does a tremendous number for. Ufc people are starved for something. Which is why. This should not be surprised if anybody if you're then just for the purposes of this podcast carried Batman Commissioner of the NHL. Of course you're marveling for different scenarios. What happens if we can come back on the first of June? What happens if it's the first of July the first of August the first of September I would imagine there's a number of different models because to your point when the health authorities say that it's safe to go back to work to go back to play to resume your league. You know when when the merit amityville says it's okay to go back into the water. They WANNA be ready and they want to be able to maximize right away because people are coming out this thing thirsty. I think that's all true. I think that's all true now. One thing I just wanted to mention so the other night we talked about how North Dakota's on the list of places they could potentially play this and one of the issues there is going to be hotels. There simply is not the infrastructure hotel wise to do it so that is the big strike against it but they're arena is spectacular. If you've ever been there or you know it it's beautiful and dabbled lords marble floors Elliott. It's makes total sense. It could house several teams but wouldn't all be North Dakota. Maybe it was my fault for not writing it clear enough. I did put in more than one site would need to be done but people seem to read it as it's all going to be there. It wouldn't all be there. There would be multiple sites. I don't know four or six or eight or whatever but there would be multiple sites that way that it would determine the runoff to the Stanley Cup final. If we could have it but this is completely out of everybody's hands we'RE NOT GONNA LIKE JEFF. Like I've said this we're not gonNA wait 'til May or June what we're capable of doing. I duNNo. I remain skeptical to the point about I. I would be concerned about next season. Jeff this is an optimistic podcast. I'm getting two down. I'm getting too cynical now. I don't want Downer Jeff. Here this is an optimistic podcast. Now look people out. There are listeners out there. We know it's tough and I don't want to make light of that in any way shape or form but I just believe because the way I live my life is you have to believe that at some point the best is going to happen. That's the way I have to live and I realize it's not in the short term like I think Major League Baseball saying May is not realistic. But I think we have to understand that we don't know anything until the end of May beginning of June and then we'll see and Jeff. You might turn out to be right doctor. Negative may turn out to be right but until I know okay. I'm hoping for the best. Okay you know what you know. What's positive through all of this because we've all had a lot of time now on our hands go investigate vintage games to watch rewind events godown. U2 wormholes that you can't win the hockey season his odd because there are always games on every single night and and we watched them and you watch them as well gentle listener Nord. I watched yesterday. What's at. Oh Shell rewind. So the old Andrea Hockey League's rewind shows is so good. I LOVE THE WAY. It's packaged up to to do an. Oa Shell rewind so. I watched from nineteen eighty four. And I'm going somewhere this and you're gonna like so nineteen eighty-four Sault Sainte Marie greyhounds coach by Terry Crisp Facing off against the Oshawa generals. Paul -Tario the bench bossier Sherry Bassin. is the general manager the host of the entire affair census broadcast on global. Is Mike Anthem? And how love Mike Askham and the play by play. I think is what I've settled on for For his title as well so we talk to him and Ken Holland the General Manager of the Edmonton oilers Will drop by for a pretty interesting conversation. You really going to like this one. But that's what I that's the one find that I've stumbled across so far online. Oh L. Rewind greyhounds generals. Mike answer them. Jim Houston and Gary Green. What a Godsend Fridge. How you well first of all. I think that would be incredible to watch I. I remember Jack Miller calling a lot of those. Oh He sure is a lot of those games out there with the legendary Belleville play by play voice absolutely okay so I have to say that. I don't remember those games but I will take a look. That's a good one. You Know Jeff I got to tell you I'm getting tired of television in what sense. I- bishops watching so much of it. I've watched homeland to catch up with it. I've watched a couple of our classic games to watch them. I watched a couple of the watch parties to watch them in support our group. I want to be supportive of the stuff. They're sports to employees are doing. But I have to tell you. I'm getting tired of looking at screens. I really am and I get tired of it a lot in general but now particularly. I'm having trouble. I'm just like in front of the TV again. I'm really actually struggling with that so I'm trying to do some more reading The weather's getting better in Toronto. I took an hour long bike ride yesterday. I am trying to find some other things to do because I admit I'm struggling with the amount of TV. That I'm watching and I really feel that. They've hit by saturation point. You're still working out though. Are you yeah working out riding your bike? You're reading. What am I missing here? That's good yeah no no no. I know it is good but I've also been doing a like a lot of work. I'm working on a couple of projects of the podcast so but I'm just saying that like I'm getting tired of the television. I don't know of anybody else is getting this right now but I'm getting tired of the TV I don't watch until the evening right now because we have a a nightly routine now with the kids After three rolled goes down I'll make a little bit of supper for me and my wife and we will sit down with our two boys ten and eight and you let me know whether this is good. Parenting or knots K so. I've never seen the walking dead series ever and our kids are fascinated by zombies. So last week we started episode one season one of the walking dead and we'll watch usually two sometimes three episodes before the kids go to bed. I thought there would be nightmares. I thought there would be. I can't sleep dad but there hasn't been quite the opposite has happened will my wife and I beyond the cover of next month's edition of today's parent magazine Elliott. You see I have to tell you that I think in this day and age. There's no such thing as bad parenting. There's no such thing as bad parenting are there is. There is bad parenting. I think now all the kids are home. Everybody you know. What if if walking dead gets you through and I got no problem with that would if I may or may not have told the kids at the beginning of episode one that were showing you this because we want you to know where all this heading with that make me a bad parent Deli. That might scare them a little bit the Alta. I played cornhole with Max Today. What is that Cornell's when you throw the beanbags into the ground okay? So he was getting mad because I kept on making him shoot from farther because I want him to improve his aim like he can hit from close. But you know you WANNA make it more of a challenge and he was missing for a while which is okay like I. Don't give up on them. I want them to learn. He'll practice. It'll get better. I'm good with that. But boy he was starting to get really frustrated and really mad and he wanted to go in and I wouldn't let him in for a while and That was what I was planning to watch her. This was bad parenting and I wasn't even getting matter of like you know. Hey as long as you try and give it a good effort you'll figure it out eventually. I think that might be. I think forcing your son to play cornhole. When he's on a losing streak is worse than having them. Watch the walking dead. I HAVE AAA hockey. Kids you WANNA see bad parenting. Come to the ring. Trust me on that will kick it off Thirty one thoughts the podcast presented by GMC. Sierra okay welcome to the podcast of your favorite parents Elliott Friedman Yours truly. Geoff Merrick before.

"Your strength to to make one pair in this scenario on perfectly fine with it and in past seasons you know hindsight is twenty twenty. But I would've love looking back on it now. I sort of wish they had kept Muslim. Doughty is a pair and he just say listen. Forget the other four guys were just sticking with these at least these guys gray hair and you go at least. These guys escalates one hundred twenty nine minutes a game and we'll just take our chances on the other eight were good yeah a good pair but instead they split them up and they tried to spread the strength and then right they struggled to find. I had a partner for Muslim. And they wound up going through mcnabb and forward for doughty who are adequate. But I don't think anybody would argue really on par with without without he's so walker doubting for now I love it because at this point. You're just looking. You're looking to reinforce quick strong play. You're looking to hold goals against because you just don't WanNa get blown out night in night it out because Kim Bay grunts from Wagner Lozad Amati. Oh what are these guys going to do. If you're down three to nothing every game in the first period right like at some point. You just can't keep digging out of that hole right so I I mean I love it and the Kings scored I again tonight. They did indeed animals copacetic. which is another key? Yeah is it not. When you're playing with a leader makes a big difference? Sweating gave up the lead. But it still makes especially near the bottom of the standings. And you've got a younger Younger but still still inexperienced team right in terms of a lot of the guys at the bottom of the roster. Yup I think for the elders you you look at it hard calm down. Calm Down Kid. L. Elders the old guys who are closely better around thirty thirty year olds thirty to tell me about a brother collecting social security of. Hey Welcome to the club. No it's an interesting thing because I think it's great for this team to start scoring I because for a a year plus we've been chasing and can get old for a lot of the older guys and for the younger guys not only frustrating but just and in over their heads a little bit at times in the heats happening so it's a good change of pace it's a good change of pace but it's just great because because it you know the first goal I don't know at the status but I do know that it's over fifty percent chance of winning the game. Yeah in terms of outcomes if you score I in the game and that really l.. Strangely enough it's lower than it used to be when because we're scoring more goals. But I mean before Dave and I were elders it used to be that of you scored I you had. I'd like a ninety percent chance of winning. I feel like now it's probably down. I can't six ninety it no use to be. I'm saying like twenty years ago. It used I don't remember off the top my head with the stat. Was Somebody Young whipper. I mean it really was like big but this is back on but this is back in the nineties when the Detroit or not Detroit New Jersey devils with take a one nothing. The game is over now was it. Shut down the neutral zone for the rest of the game. And the Hollywood stop everything. He had dominant Kasich Broder. And all those guys But another thing that That only the elders will remember. Is that when Detroit would come to town. The crowd route was an issue because of Detroit scored. You don't WanNa talk about the tweet. There'd be a while I will there but the lower bowl full of red wings fans kings fans Sir but back in the forum. Oh Yeah I'M NOT GONNA blame here to those days back in the form and even in the early days of staple center at the early two thousand seven straight was still rolling through winning remember the frenzy on Figaro right there was a ton of red wings fans were and so even tonight Jack The tweet. I'm referencing Jack's referencing was. I was still Wanna nothing and and it was in the second period of the building was quiet and I thought to myself. This is kind of interesting. I don't ever remember Detroit Games being this quiet quiet and I thought to myself if this was you know if this was an any other season other than this winter or last season that the kings were in last place Detroit would have been really good good night digital right. The crowd would have been sure factor because it would have been good and they would have been scoring yet so smart Aleck Jesse I start writing. I used to on any other night. You know Detroit coming to town would've made me cringe but tonight it's not so bad and then Detroit scores and of course he goes nuts and then five minutes later hearing. Let's go wings chance interesting though when I I've noticed in the past asked when Chicago comes here Montreal Toronto whenever they score and I make a goal announce there's usually a big applause. Yeah opposition when those teams are here tonight not so much I heard a little bit of it. And he had a couple of goals tonight and there are some smatterings of But not as bad as it. I have a theory used to be the the fans who live in L. A.. Now from Detroit right. I'm about to malign your Your people naturally but no I know monsieur. Yeah Not Really People Hills Ninety. I didn't Save Your License Eagle. Because he's a uber. Assayed Nice working with you. Thanks thanks for listening. The point is that twenty to wear poppies is that we know at fifteen twenty years ago when the team went Detroit was rolling yes right and it was twenty years of uninterrupted playoffs. Contention virus or splash but as far as them being like expect. Oh yeah cop sure. I'm ninety three ninety. Four all the way up to two thousand and eight eleven. They wanted to know eight or nine. But I'm saying that's how long the yeah. Yeah they were expected to do it. because it never stopped because there was just a rolling right like even that team you know we just watched the the Russian five documentary. And you're thinking to yourself. Oh is sermon Shanahan. And that but then you look at the roster and you go. Oh my God Lindstrom's on that team. And then he was there all the way through two thousand and eight and you know that's there air for the two thousand and two team you know his rookie or maybe not rookies. Young Zebra like there was a transition from one era to another. It was seamless. Yeah so the fans could could roll with those players from the Federal Larry on writing and so your investment you know your your investment in pretending that you still live in Detroit right. Oh in fact you have lived in Los Angeles for fifteen years and should have moved on by. Now you're able to you're able to cling to that delusion and that and that sort of false part of your identity that you're watering every you know twice a year for twenty years move on But now those players are gonna like and so. There's no one left if you retired it. Yeah if you've lost them if you move to La in the last let's Jimmy Howard County just an applicator you know unless you're moved to La. I should say in the last five years. What do you know about Mantha? What do you know about the Larkin? What do you know about an atheist an ethicist this anthony see you? Thank you like those are just names on. Its you pronounce. That one tonight. Doesn't play in the city. You live right so anyway. That's all right. I don't like Red Wings. Fans I get that. That's awesome my theory. Picking up what. You're putting down theories that they eat dog food. That's a statistic since choke ooh that only John Rosen will appreciate Glenville. One listener will catch on. Maybe pumpernickel will appreciate it to anyway. I think I've done rattling for a second rambling rambling rambling. Yeah that's clerks reference and having anonymous vote again tonight. We'll let's find out Jack Player of the game not sorry play it again. We'll do play play. Hey of the game. It's gotta be goal for at least okay. From my opinion after that response I know I gave it to campaign goal. A AH saved the game and you know good on him for responding after being out last game Dave. I'm going to agree with that. Kemp School. I am not going to agree with. I didn't think he will. Yeah your response. That's kind of going to say. I follows goal in overtime. I'm not oh really Kyle Clifford's something. Kyle Korver his backhand pass from behind the net note dominic with Pope Atari school because everything after COPA SARS goal the other fifteen yes is making up for the lack of scoring right. It's desperate. It's I'm glad it happened but it's you know it is almost too little too late late and it is to whatever it was too late But COPETAS goal was was flawless scored it and escorted early. They come out of the gate. They've won the previous his game. There's all this stuff swirling around the team there's lineup changes and not only. Does he score one goal that he goes on to have a three point night. He's got twenty one points in nineteen games. It kicks it off with a goal. He's the captain it's gotTa start with him so for me. That's the play it again player of again. Quick All right I'm GONNA go quick. I mean I just think three games in a row now. Yeah and money and those goals weren't for just that neither of them whereas fall and that's great to see because you know he has a known to live in a little bit of a Leaguer your or you know the mystery goal over the early part of the season and maybe even a little bit in the last year to go in I. Yeah I don't know goalscorer and mask. It wasn't for you before we go. I WanNa ask you guys this Jack. The goal was disallowed. Is that a goal. No I agree and all right fine. There was contact there. It was contacted that your wasn't much contact. I mean he did follow. He tripped over Bernie. A guy kind of made contact but then he kinda played it up a little bit too like yeah look you just really try to get thirty second right. Yeah Yeah Yeah. Yeah it's just you can't let it regardless of whether the chicken or the egg came first and you know who caused who'd hit each other and so on and so forth you just can't let a goal go. Oh win unless it's so blatantly obvious that it's not goal. Tender interference and that it was caused by the Detroit team. So I'd say no no. I'm just glad it didn't wind up influencing the outcome of the game because if this is a game where they can only score one goal and they have that one taken back then I even though there unless the doesn't matter I'm still not in the category category of we would have lost this game two to one that I think that would have influenced it because it was not. It was never like a goal goal like you went in the net but it was never like A. How could they take that off? The the board. The thing that the thing that stuck with me from that is you didn't see anyone on the king's like complaints and no one didn't even go off which is usually I because I was screaming. No goal really good for watching the referee but offering behind the so. I said Yeah so you know no. I D to rule the organ player for those. That don't know he's the one who controls the Horn so he hits the horn when when the puck was in the narrow so if dealer or didn't see the RAFF wave it off which I think he did but I just to make sure I said it's no gold noble noble. I kept saying that one of my favorite stories that he told me in in episode of the podcast from two years ago maybe last year I don't remember but he does control the Horn and in two thousand fourteen when Albertina scored in overtime to defeat the New York. Rangers Rangers hit the horn. Like four times and wouldn't let go of it. Yeah it was awesome one of the best horns. Oh yeah like. They're still trying to draw villa going. That was great. You can hear it vaguely so I think that is going to wrap it up for this. No Post game on Saturday kings fans against the Vegas Golden Goldeneye because that is the twentieth game of the season and we will be doing a twenty game revisitation of the ten questions that we asked before the season nights. So we'll have that. Let's see well. One of the questions was answered with the Bjorn Foot. And it's looking very much like we might wipe a second question that board to number seventeen might very well might so we'll see but in the meantime please do go ahead and listen to the podcast with John. Rosen and I the other day about Ilya Kovalchuk plus If you haven't already listened to the wild post game it was a good one. I know some of you go back and listen to the old post game episodes that you haven't heard yet. It wasn't easy. I'm not sure why but I appreciate it as good one. And if you WanNa hear me Scrimmage on Rosen again the I got shutout current events episode certain subscribe John Resin until then while until whenever next week. Thanks for listening..

"Get ten dollars for every home run, your teammates, that's kind of cool, cool prop. I'm a little bit of retirement little bit of slash rehab right now. But I will say it's in this always happens. I've started noticing something. I'm in talking to Frankie about it from past two weeks. Like, you see the Red Wings. Frank knows that the Red Wings are doing red wing Red Wings are plus two hundred to four hundred every night and they win every night. The one where you're going to tell me I've just been studying there doesn't elaborate now. Dearborn talking. I think they've won Marty. Pull up the Red Wings. I've just been stunts been say it's been in the lab because six of the row tell give me their odds in the last six six in a row. There's no way mardi can figure that out. Getting we'll get back to give me we'll get back to do it mardi gras. We'll get back to you Marty. I can do I because I might ritual theory was that the Vegas nights. We're going on a big streak, and I'm like Vegas every night. Well, there are minus four hundred at home against the Red Wings, and I got distracted and do it. But unlike I bet they wanna went Redwings one. That's what. Then I start paying attention to the Redwings. They haven't lost since there. So read them. Give me a sec you? Easiest plus two thirty last game. And they we got that they won they were plus two oh five against the Bruins. They won that to devils. They were as I can pick them. I think they're only plus one oh five into Dell's? They won that. And then. Against the sabers. Holy shit. They were plus one fifty. And you were to studying the shift back on tonight. Oh, yeah. Plus three hundred night against the sharks. They were plus three eighty one. The shit. They've just caught fire. They beat everybody in there for now. It's like, well, I'm not I just was like out of it. But every night. Tonight. Yeah. And they just want they've won. They just wait now every like. They're like a bad team that all of a sudden is the best team in the league. Oh my God. So the plus three hundred tonight against Pittsburgh. But as I mean as soon as you bet on that. Well, just keep that in your tickle file. Literally fr Frankie, I walk in LA Hobo them Red Wings like every day because they'd be. It'd be beat the islanders plus two hundred and the streak as well. No, they beat the bruise. They didn't just beat the Bruins. They killed the Bruins. They beat them like six three. Faren is like Madam. It was three three and then six threes came back in on the murder us. Yeah. But they're like terrible redwoods point. That's all the kids now that they're out there. But they're playing Pittsburgh tonight. Who has the win y'all while they're running into like the Todd of the hottest team Lille world. Yeah. So that's your points about you. Don't get anything. But if I was betting, so that's what I would do little little stat. Would you have baseball? This looks good. And then the under the Tigers game that doesn't look good. Let's just gotta hit. We're getting no hit through five. I knew. You'd see people walk around the city. They met skier his franker. Stu Frank rebel. Who's the GM is hanging out with Brody? Going on here. So Ravelli did a one byte thing. Oh, Jack in your home style. He's thirsty. Good ballpark pizza. General but one bite. Everyone knows rules. I gave it ES nor napkins. Thank you. Okay. All right. Yeah..

"So TSN is calling me on the phone while I'm driving the kids are crying in the background my brothers trying to beep in because he sees my picture on the thing on TSN knew trying to talk to me, and they can't even get a word in. 'cause I can't hear squad kids are going nuts. And then we get to the airport. There's no way I'm making gametime for this at all. But I fly into Columbus. When I land is guide books like he's pissed off to see me. I forget what he he might even still be. He's last name's Neil. He's like dirty guy Chiyoda. Yeah. Yeah. Him. He's waiting there. And he's like, let's go grab your bags. I'm like, okay. Like, I think we're just doing the rank. He's like, no. He's like we only have five defense. You're going lineup. I'm like Jimmy games starting right now. He's like, yeah. It doesn't matter. Wayne wants you to play some like holy shit. So we get in the car. And obviously, this is the power of the great one. I've got a police escort first time in my life where I didn't break the law that I had a police escort one cop car in front of me one top terror behind and their wizened through Columbus to get me to the game. And I'm like guys you realize I've been help scratch half the year. Like, I'm really not this important. But I guess they also how were you? Well, that's where it gets funny is we get there and STAN the man is trying to so my jersey together in grab me, some gear bear pants, and I. I didn't have any gloves. I wear the bright red gloves from the Red Wings. But I had in the end. Oh god. With awesome. When he ended up having a coffee berry Smith is trying to like come and see me at the first or second TV time out, and he's like you ready to go. I'm like drinking a coffee. I'm I think I'll be ready to go. Then the next time guns and Wayne comes down little hallway in Columbus and says, let's fucking go. Apart from Shane dawn and Tyson. Nash, I had never met anybody on the team before like in person. And so I'm coming out to the bench. And I'm like gloves off like shaking hands with guys. Nice to meet nice to meet you very Smith is like get the fuck on the ice warmup. So now, I gotta pull a whole complete bender move where I'm jumping on the ice little almost doing sideboards in the middle of the TV out just to get one. What's so funny about it? I literally that every game. Are you saying that's a bad thing? I'm in the same boat, buddy. I feel your pain, but think you better than me you won't do boards boards every game. Well, I think I'm better cross over. Yeah. Well, fuck. Go boards boards. Fuck hands out. They biz. Fast AA. Back from ought to be right back. Be right back. That's what it was like. And I I'm getting chirped by Tyson Nash at the same time because we had played together and Saint Louis, and he's just giving it to me and Ron Haines. He's playing for Columbus at the time. And now he's chirping me because we have the same agent, and he's laughing 'cause I got the bright red gloves on and he's like asking me if I bought them out a yard sale on the way to the ranks and their cases, even and I gotta go out there and play but boys, but this is where it gets better. Go out getting the cyst we win the game. No big deal head back areas. Ona sit by the pool of next day. Right. Wow. Isn't a that's a nice little and then fucking ride into the sunset. Would you? I loved playing there. Go ahead there is it true that on the cross cross country flights with the coyotes. Gretzky would just have a magnum bottle of grey goose then you'd landed be gone. I cannot confirm or deny. He's he's the great one. That could probably have me squad without anybody ever. Visit that talking praise. Glenn thing about him. Like, we would be we'd fall for face of the earth. We'd we'd never even existed. First of all he'd have to Google and try to figure out who I was again. Yeah. Yeah. Remember me saying here, but not yet?.
