"The wet like litigate inside my head because all i want to do is tell a story in entertaining people. It's lovely and we will mean to your second series. The sunny hawk series. They've got four bucks a net. It's another story. takes us. Range of patrolling. The border lands now that won that series one based mass market paperback novel for both nine twenty nineteen and twenty twenty the remain faithful to the texas seating. But you certainly know how to tell a good takes a story to tell us more about the ticks that you know i was born fourth-generation tastes and i was. I was born in the state. This is my state. this is These are the people that i grew up with. I love everything about texas. We're we're so unique They we stand alone and we kind of feel like we do takes. His exit came into the union in a completely different way than than the other states as we have says a pride that really impacted things that we do in the things that we say right. And so i. I wanna tell i'm telling stories about all of takes not just small parts. We spoke earlier about how people think. Texas desert like monument valley. John wayne country. But it's not it texas very end so i wanted. I'd been writing the river series since nineteen. I'm he says twenty eleven starting with the rock whole the for my first novel and my agent after about four or five six books she said i want you start writing something a little different it. Would you consider writing thrillers. And i told her try. And so i wanted to sit somewhere differently so would be down the rugged been country of texas. It's it's it's it's country it's still untouched. In many ways still rough desert country is mountainous dangerous. Everything out there will stick or stay or cut you one way or the other. If you're out away from the towns. And so i wanted to bring all that to live with sunny hot. And what better. Main major protagonist would could you come up with other than a texas ranger. Who is is a lot like the old rangers of the eighteen hundreds but at the same time he has his human quirks is very petuous he will get himself into trouble in situations that if he would sit and think about it for low volume. You didn't do but it. It gives us since venture in that sense thriller cents and when i turned that first book into them hawks pray my agent said well. This is a thriller. I've never like. I've never read before she goes. This is a western thriller and so then all of a sudden i realize i'm writing contemporary western thrillers. On top of everything else and friendly enough. You'll read river theories although it is seat in the nineteen sixties considered historic. Now isn't it. isn't that funny. I grew up without sixty seven years old. I grew up in that era. People looking back saying well that that's history from a long time ago but it's still there. I still remember it very well in. And i wanted to bring those people in our old fashioned way of thinking and talking into these novels reserve it. Texas is changing as we speak a huge influx of people moving into the state. Our small towns are not the same small towns. I grew up with and we're even losing our sense of language like old timey language that we talk about words or phrases that my grandparents used that are going to be gone someday and so i include those in the novels also as well as the way of life that then i lived in. They lived in the mid sixties. They weren't completely out of the depression at that. Point these folks. They survived the great depression around the states. They had gone to war during world war. Two many many men and women went over there and then korea claimed even more people. And i think it's slow down the growth in my region in the northeast texas region. Up until the seventies would find Out so i was caught. I wasn't i should say call. I lived between two generations and it was a perfect time for me to see how the old folks lived. And how i grew up calling the old folks. They were younger than i am now. But that's how i look at the series as you've mentioned began with the rock home twenty and lebron and at that stage. Your hero need fakher or you'll sink character. He is a hero as well. He's a farmer and a part time. Sheriff who's dealing really with domestic disputes and moonshine. That's very quiet little country area and when he spiced with a mood he pays up with a famous black Sheriff from neighboring county john washington. Now it seems to me. The year is nineteen sixty four within really heckled in texas at that time that have white and black sheriff would together. Isn't that interesting that you say that because it would Let me correct you a little bit. Ned parker as a constable. He's not a sheriff john. Washington as deputy sheriff in nearby chisholm texas. But it happened. And i know it happened could happen because my granddad was ned parker and i knew john washington whose real name was leroy sites and they worked together on a number of occasions on on crimes that had occurred in that region in that rural area. My granddad was a former but constables. At that time were elected officials that were just an outreach of the sheriff's department in paris texas or what chisholm today and so he my granddad work for the sheriff's department and he took care of drugs. He settled family disputes. Whatever but he did it all his own but sometimes you do those things on there too dangerous or you need someone witty and at that time is what you mentioned that time there. Were you know there was some. There was division between the races and so when my granddad would need to go to certain areas he would call john washington whose charge was to take care of as as i heard mr leroy say his job was to take your his people. That's who he dealt with and he was as big as i make him out to be in the novels it was a giant of a man. I i tell her one. Think think of green mile and john coffey in the green mile mr leroy was about the size of a huge man and so i use them the foundation the basis of my characters and i use a lot of what i saw the rock whole habit in a huge in the sense not to the extent that the murderer was dealt with as idea with in the novel Spoilers but it. It's something that happened. It's a it's a crime that my granddad investigated when i was ten years old and he that went on for well over a year until it just fell off my radar's child. I didn't think about it until i was wrong. And he was retired and we were sitting on the porch. His farmhouse watching is farm was situated so close to the river. I i can see the land where the land down toward the river. And i could see the lights of oakland attending oklahoma and had our sitting on his porch watching the cattle out in the pasture and i remembered all the events that happened in that i put in the rockall and ask him to take you know. Did you ever catch this guy. And my granddad looked at me with these coal ice blue eyes that he had a looked away. Looked back at me again. He said well son sometimes some folks just need kill it. And that's all he would tell me and with that sentence. I saw what really happened. It will happen up on that river and this rural area which was inhabited by men that had survived world war. Two we said the men that survive korea in the men and women whose lives were impacted by someone who was up what we know today as a budding serial killer and so i'm just i couldn't wrap my head around what they could've done or capable of doing so. I took an idea and i folded into the manuscript and.

"Red River technology decisions aren't black and white. Pink red at 11 15. Let's check in with George Wallace. Alright, Michelle. We got a good 12 minute warning Falcons trying to hold on for their second win of the year. Leading Carolina 25 17 a missed extra points in the last touchdown from Todd Gurley and the is still just the one score game. Panthers have the ball. Teddy Bridgewater 14 1938 Yards left the game for a little bit of time after being hit as ah with a neck injury, But he did come back in P. J. Walker relief. Tim relieved him, but Bridge water back in the game. He's thrown a touchdown in Curtis Samuel Samuel, also with rushing TD on the night and the Panthers have the ball down. Eight need to score in two point conversion to try and force overtime down a level Trevor Laurence has tested positive for covert 19. The Clemson quarterback will miss the game against Boston College this weekend. His coach says he is doing fine, mild symptoms right now, but will not be able to play. Of course, Lawrence, the projected number one overall pick comes out next year and also the Heisman Trophy. Runner this year, but we'll miss this week's game with Boston College. Tony LaRussa back is the manager of the Chicago White Sox. At 76 years old. The Hall of Famer rejoins the franchise where he got his managerial career started more than four decades ago. He's won three World Series one with the A's then two more with the Cardinals most recently back in 2011, ESPN reporting a J. Hinch and the Tiger is very close to locking up a deal for him to become the manager of Detroit. He was the manager of the Astros, but suspended for this past season for his role in the signs. "Bathroom all communicating all these, you know capabilities and features all at once right? I'm going to run out of storage but you know, there are a couple of different things that you know, Red River in the team of the kind of explored. Some of that is is pruning some of those data's month, you know, others are kind of the summaries indexes that you see in Splunk, right? So, I mean a lot of times if you have a consistent setting or you know reading on a sensor for a period of time, but it's fairer you could summarize that right and say well throughout this whole period of time this was just one value. So now we don't have to have multiple readings at that same value. We can you know, kind of reduce that, you know cost off. Storage there and then there's also the compression techniques, right so implementing, you know the compression which I think is default on Splunk indexers from that mistake and and they you know, sometimes it depending on the data source that could be extraneous information that you know isn't necessarily relevant to the application that you're looking for for the good the answers out of the iot appliances off in prune those specific data fields off and just kind of keep what's necessary. So you mentioned spunk a couple of times and I'm curious from your point of view. How is Red River partnering with Splunk to deliver value to your customers both for you know iot use cases, but all these cases where the worst blinking and stated everything platform really, you know play oh man, so glad you asked cuz I'm actually involved in a quite a few of those projects and there's a lot, you know, we've been working with Splunk on the return to work initiative a couple of other initiatives and Splunk is a core component of some of our strong. Just Solutions, right? So especially you know, when you talk about the iot space right security is definitely a big concern. I was actually just listening to a song podcast where somebody was talking about a vulnerability that a security researcher had found where they could reverse-engineer the firmware of a coffee maker and push that you know updated or or basically, you know broke firmware to that coffee maker without any authentication and take over that coffee maker and now you have a coffee maker that spying on you, right? So that's definitely a major threat landscape. You know, when you look at all these iot appliances is, you know Hub controlled, I you know Cloud controlled, you know, a lot of times this the security concerns aren't taken into consideration around those iot appliances. And so the Red River came up with the device isolation architecture and our device isolation architecture really helps to reduce that threaten wage. So some of the things we do, you know is Implement Technologies like network access control and you know flow and Analysis vulnerability analysis. And we take all of that data feed it into Splunk, you know, correlate it in leverage tools like Enterprise security, you know, so that if there are incidents or suspicious activity, right we can then correlate, you know investigate with it leveraging Enterprise security and then also incorporating things like Phantom to automate some of those remediation tasks, right or at least automate some of the investigation steps. Yeah, absolutely. And you want things you talked about there that I want to kind of peel back a little bit is you know this idea that you know, when we have massive amounts of streams of data, obviously, you need a platform, you know back to find Value from it. So you talked about Splunk as a platform that red river is partnering with to deliver value from customers, but one of the things that you know s cough is just you know a few days away from now, you know, I'm getting.

"People starting to get smart enough to like shook a build in and create like Deployable hubs that that kind of build this and make it easier for deployment. So I'm not seeing two month. Hubs, right and are quite a few, you know vendors that come up with the sensors themselves. So I'm not going to say like, I don't really don't think they're putting them into the game itself. And a lot of the strategies now have been let's get rid of the Hub right and have the sensor communicate to a cloud platform or something else. Right? So, you know, they have these nice, you know, LED smart light bulbs, right and the challenge a lot of people had was that not only were these Labs expensive but that you needed a hub right to then communicate control with light bulbs. And so what a lot of vendors are doing now is saying we'll get going to get rid of the Hub and the light bulbs going to communicate to our cloud and now the customer can just you know, control the light bulb through the cloud and that's to reduce the cost to the customer and make it convenient man. I tell you what the hubs what are the annoying thing? That is I don't know if you got if you're into the smart home thing, but I had one of those wink hubs and they, you know part of the reason I bought it was off. Like, oh we'll never charge you a fee like you bought this Hub. And now it's yours forever. It's a piece of hardware and then two years later. They're like, oh we're going broke. So we need to charge everybody $10 a month for their Hub to work. So I am a big fan of getting rid of home. Well, I'm going to be contrary there because as someone who is a very smart home afishinado. If you start going to the cloud now your reliant on them and depending on them for the future of the sustainability of those products though, right? So I think it's a little bit of a you're both so hard personally. I'm looking at my Hubs on hubs right now where I have like three or four hubs for all my different products. So I guess I'm not one talk same time. I think it's a balance of both but obviously in the Enterprise space, it's a little bit more reliable on on the cloud and iCloud technology versus consumer, but I doubt it's it's an interesting trend of you know, where how sensors can communicate and send data to a centralized platform. So you can also correlate across different sets of different products as well. Yep. It's it's dude. It's the edge Computing Made Real right? It's we're shrinking computer. We're putting in a smart devices. Like you said, I mean and light bulbs and everything else and one of the things that happens when you create lots of choices and you're starting to measure, you know, all these different things that we never thought about measuring before but now they have their distinct value in them. You create a massive amount of data and I'm curious to hear from you know from Red River subjective how organizations dealing with this, you know, this Deluge of data from sensors that really are just they're creating a new type of data that really didn't exist in the Enterprise previously. Absolutely. I mean and it's funny you guys mentioned the Smart Homes cuz I'm actually looking to buy a house and I've been like looking at all the different Smart Home Products left and right and so I definitely understand, you know, you know the challenge with consuming all that data, right? Cuz if your frigerator your microwave or Coffeemaker your light bulbs and maybe even your.

"Holistic solution, right and really Drive value to our customers. Now that's perfect man. Now one of the things that we are obviously very interested in is really around data analytics & iiot. Can you talk a little bit about what Red River is kind of generally doing in that area of Technology. Absolutely. I mean there there is a lot so, you know, one of the big things we do is around the backbone for all iot products, which would be on the wireless space wage. So we have a large Wireless practice, you know that's familiar with the whole bunch of different, you know myriads of Wireless Technologies, right? It's just your traditional, you know attitude at 11. You name a b g n a c a x right doing predictive surveys virtual surveys physical on site surveys, you know, point-to-point Wireless, you know for the back hall off. Also some of the other, you know less common, but more recent protocols, you know, like like zigbee and Loren if some of the newer and upcoming Technologies, you know to exploring things and gnome. places and then helping customers, you know address their requirements around their different iot in a products and tools that they're going to leverage some of their different sensors helping them correlate data from Those sensors, and you know Aggregate and ingest it into analytics platforms like Splunk, Yeah, so when you talk about all the different applications of these these different protocols and the use of these sensors. What are you seeing especially in your space where you focus, you know within the federal space where what are you seeing as these organizations using home from an application standpoint? How do they use them? Absolutely. So, I mean it is oh man kind of really fascinating crazy at the same time and you know things that you generally wouldn't even really think about so one such a sensor that I've seen used is a CO2 sensor and so, you know with some of these newer buildings right with that are likely dead efficient certified one of the strategies that they actually Implement to conserve energy is having these CO2 sensors, right all over the building and these CO2 sensors off would calculate exactly how much of that CO2 is in each room, right and as a result of that I'd be able to identify how many people are in that room and modulate the HVAC system so that the HVAC is System is.

"It is Friday, October 9th, welcome to minister Sports episode 122 our first preview episode of the year really really fired up. I said I wasn't going to say that. All right just really really jacked about this episode because we just went through I just went through. I don't know probably twenty games of film again Andrew studied analytics and we're going to we're going to talk about like four or five games on this episode the big games, right the national landscape first words going to we're going to have a quick conversation about Virginia Beach North Carolina this weekend. Also University of Florida vs. A&M should be too too solid games to watch and they were going to take a deep dive into our Trio games of the week. If you want to call back that we have one game of the week, but tennessee-georgia is going to be awesome and old-school battle for the SEC East defense vs defense, right Nick Saban's old defensive coordinators, Baton Rouge. Doubt and this time finally Tennessee has at least a shot. Right and they were going to talk about Texas Oklahoma the Red River shootout and that's still what it's called. You can fuck off cancel culture. We're going to talk about the what is I guessed the opportunity for Lincoln Riley to put a nail in Tom Herman's coffin if Texas has balls and then our actual game of the week Clemson, Miami what may be really excited about I'm just I'm fired up to watch it because we're going to if nothing else we're going to learn so much about Clemson so much some of the things that that happened this past weekend, we're gonna see if Miami can expose those same thing. So we're going to really talk about the analytics and today is a very quarterback heavy day really drove into the analytics and and and the the film on on like five maybe six of these quarterbacks and I want to talk about what I saw and talked about, you know, kind of who's doing what and and what they do. Well what they don't do well what teams can expose I want to talk about all of it. So this this show off In the future is hopefully it's going to come out. We're try to switch it up and go Monday Wednesday to patreon Tuesday Thursday to the public. That's our plan what we're trying to get done. I'll tell you what screwed me up. And what's really making this difficult Choice here in Powell, Ohio. We have we are on hybrid schooling which means my kids go two or three days a week every week and then they're home-schooled on the other days. Well wouldn't you know, I get my kids every Wednesday and then I have them all day Thursday and so of course Thursday is a hybrid day. So I lose and I have them Wednesday and then all day Thursday no school. It's like and I'm like a substitute teachers. It's unbelievable, but I took him to school this morning and got after it. I mean was grinding so I wouldn't trade that time for the world, but it's really, you know, screwing up my my time commitment to this show and and everything else we have that on speaking of which been been teasing it been talking about it tickets are going on sale tomorrow the ace onlain a charging experience. Yeah, I think it's very fitting, considering that you were re started in the middle of a pandemic. And you know Dr Fauci what his leadership has been for this country for him being out there on the first pitch. I think that's a big signal to our country. What that means that you know we can do this, and I think he believes in it. If we do we follow the protocols. We could make the season work and we believe in, you know, following the experts on this and I think it's a good representation of what the country should be focusing on Max and then adds, will also have to focus on the weather Showers are in the forecast for tomorrow and Friday. "Like any film? Red River is the product of specific historical moment, and we must consider that moment to understand the intricacies of the film itself. Red River emerged from the dawn of the postwar period. Filmed in nineteen forty six and released in nineteen forty eight a time in which America was celebrating a worldwide victory over the axis forces and reveling in its position as a global superpower. If this time was also the dawn of a new conflict, the Cold War. An animosity between nations that centered on the divide between the US and the USSR that quickly arose in the wake of World War. Two many recognize the Cold War in terms of the specific political and economic binary, which divided the nations involved democracy versus totalitarianism capitalism. Versus communism thus. This is a time when the United States more than ever identifies itself as a nation of cash. List's as well. As global force. The postwar period was also a time of economic resurgence as veterans returned Europeans immigrated and families expanded with the baby boom the population began to swell creating higher demand for goods and services. Resultantly the seller's market allowed for dramatic price inflation and higher profits and with wages continually rising as well Americans could afford, these increased prices money was available and consumer isn't was quickly in vogue. Professional spheres grew further spurring the economy while the rise of Madison Avenue professions, namely marketing advertising and public relations sparked newfound interest in the joy of spending with the depression safely behind and wartime. Rationing thing of the past Americans rediscovered the pleasure principle lost since the jazz age and that principal dipping into those. Newly filled wallets and purses these growing notions financial success and consumerism helped solidify what was now commonly being termed the American way of life in short. Not only America recognize it self as capitalists like never before Americans had the proof that they needed that capitalism was working. It is thus not surprising to see a film Red River. Not only made but met with critical and commercial success. It is nothing if not a celebration of capitalism openly engaging with America's economic and political identity. Red River is about the days of the frontier when the US was moving west across the continent acquiring land and building a nation. After all the film begins with Tom Dunton, claiming the patch of land. He will develop into his ranch essentially stealing the land from Mexican who in turn stole the land from the native Americans. The theft is justified. Win Thomas Dunston says that's too much land for any one man all this land aching to be used and never has been a line, which also conveniently justifies America's own conquest of the new world its own expansionist history, and Thomas Dunton is a capitalist. If there ever was one not only building his business from the ground up, but also stopping at nothing to maintain it and collect his profit, expansionism and capitalism or inherently linked here with one the justification for the other. This land is not being used. So I will take it to build my empire. Dunston also justifies it as common good for the nation. He pledges to feed the country with his good beef making the people strong and letting them grow the seizure of land, thus becomes essential for the nation's future. And for the sake of its people. It's also significant that this was the beginning of time where big business squeeze. The little man as growing bureaucracy the merging of corporations and factory automation pushed the individual out of the American workplace as such Red River can be viewed as a celebration of the individual entrepeneurship as well as capitalism as a whole Thomas Dunston builds his ranch with nothing, but a cow Abol and the land he claims for his own a success story of the common man, the individual American male who rises to economic power with a business of his own. This couldn't be more perfectly embodied than with John Wayne as the star the very ideal of American manhood at the time further, it's a family business. Of course started by the American individual. But also supported by the sun figure Matthew and the grandfatherly Groot certainly Red River is a film about men. Rugged men active men men who carry guns men who fight for and defend what's. There's and what they believe in the very sort of men newly returned from the war and readjusting to civilian life. Yet, those veterans returned with scars, both physical and psychological and while the wounds and lost limbs could be seen the interior trauma left from combat begged to be used as the nation was also taking an interest in Freud and all things psychoanalytic glimpses of the psychosis inevitable in that rugged active mail began to emerge throughout cinema with Red River. No exception Thomas Dunston is also a man falling apart on the verge of psychological collapse obsessed misguided and full of neuroses, though, he begins the film calm and collected diligent and focused mentally sharp and able to do anything he sets his mind to we witness Dunton's tragic spiral into the megalomania and fixation until we along with Matthew. See that he is no longer capable of running his business having become a danger to both himself and others. John Wayne is clearly determining factor for the film. Indeed, no other actor in history has been so singularly associated with one genre. And for many Wayne was the very embodiment of the western hero, a strong brave and lawful purveyor of Justice whose delivered speech and masculine swagger conveyed, his straightforward nature. It is important to consider that Red River marked the first time that Wayne portrayed a bad character on screen dramatically subverting audience expectations for his character. John Wayne's hero turns villain in many respects calling into question all audience assumptions, this is also the first time Wayne war aging makeup, the youthful Wayne of the opening scenes echoes his conic performance as Ringo in stagecoach ten years earlier ones. The film advances in time fourteen years, we're led to realize this western hero has grown into a darkly twisted variation of his usual role the males inner conflict following World War Two also emerged from an uneasy tension with the female as he returned from abroad to find women successfully holding down the industrial fort in his absence women, it seems were able to hold the country together without him and his role as breadwinner. Now seemed threatened by Rosie the Riveter this tension also involved the changing nature of sexual relationships during this period, not only was the female self sufficient, but she was becoming a different creature than the one. He had left behind the male defiantly bombarded by change options things never bargained for and generally stressed out turned defensive it is not difficult to understand this Alterra male fantasy which essentially pushes the female aside. Allowing men to exist and carry out their business with women safely, absent the primary female role after all notably doesn't appear until two thirds of the way into the movie in Red River, a nostalgia for the old order prevails as a response to the postwar gender crisis. But the idea of women is not entirely absent, Matthew and Montgomery. Clift are presented in contrast to the ultimate male, Tom Dunton, and John Wayne Matthew is sensitive in such a way that serves as a bearer of the feminine principle in a society of men without women with the collapsing of gender roles in the postwar period and women entering the realm of men. Mathew for one seems able to cross gender positions as well. And is a harbinger for an evolution in the mail ethos? Perhaps another reason he becomes a threat to Dunston the old orders full-fledged American male the family. In general, also ran into turmoil during the postwar period. In addition to growing divorce rates and troubles between mom and dad a reality. Or ready at odds with the happy nuclear family that everyone assumed as the norm trouble between parent and child also developed a generation gap emerged between parents raised in an era of depression and children raised in postwar affluence with beliefs and a general ethos strictly at odds with each other. As dad worked more hours and mom, perhaps took her own job the media as well begin to target a youth audience with its own music fashion and lifestyle, resulting in a greater divide between the ages Red River, clearly reflects, this Thomas Dunton, Matthew Garth are ultimately as different as night and day in attitude beliefs and even in the vastly different portrayals by John, Wayne and Montgomery Clift. Here the generation gap widens. To the point of violence as Matt must usurp control of the cattle drive and Dunston responds with vow to kill him both Iran doing what he thinks is justified Hollywood zone history also has an influence here after the wartime experience making documentary and propaganda films. A number of Hollywood workers were determined to tackle fundamental issues in their postwar movies, and what better way to comment on issues in America than by using the most uniquely American genre of the western also despite the country's economic resurgence following the war box office receipts began slumping in nineteen forty six as other activities vied for the populations tension. Hollywood's answer to such problems was to fall back on formulas that who worked in the past as a result genre remained typical means of retaining the audience. In other words, tell your story about evolving, masculinity and capitalism. But said it in the old west the western is probably most associated with its graffiti Cowboys, horses, six shooters, vast landscapes shootouts, and of course, a wide assortment of hats, yet, the western is ultimately much more than this a form with its own mythology and precise themes set on the American frontier roughly between eighteen sixty five and eighteen ninety the classic western centered on specific theme. Attic binary inside and outside society, heroes and villains, strong and weak, and perhaps most famously wilderness in civilization, the western was thus of the ical for solving ambiguities as such distinctions as good and evil became clear, cut and simplistic, the classic formula centered on a villainous force usually strong stemming from outside of society and associated with the wilderness, which then praise upon the western community a hero is then caught between the two. To possessing the same skills as the villain, but fundamentally committed to the ideals of the townspeople by defeating the villain. The hero saves and is embraced by the community. Maintaining it's black and white halves while providing the strength the community previously lacked the value of the western is its capacity to handle moral ambiguity with traditionally epoch terms equally. The western justifies, violent aggression allowing for a cathartic release through appropriate
