"Me in row. Eleven and cat in row twenty three right next to the bathroom the very last row the very last row. I hate that the seats don't tip back. I don't need the seat tip back. That was okay. I'm the real joy in this flight. Was that i get to hear some really interesting conversations. I don't know why particularly this flight. But i overheard A real fun back and forth between two young people and I started listening about the point that one of them said. Hey you can stop flexing now. I get it. Your dogs are alive followed by how. How did he get to that point in the conversation now the next the next thing was the other person went. I also have a live cats. That was very strange. I don't know it is weird when you just pop into the middle of somebody's conversation. Hey it will get me an hour alone with my wife. I'll pay whatever it takes. That's right that's that was it. We were standing in line at disney few weeks ago. And that's what. I hear overheard a guy say the thing was in the laws. You thought it was if it gets me an our alone with your wife. No it was it was. He say he clearly said my way. I thought it was your wife. And we were standing in line at Pirates of the caribbean. I thought maybe he was trying to negotiate a better position line. It was splash mountain. Actually was it splash mountain. I thought maybe he was anticipating getting went. You know what i'm saying. I'm sorry that was discussing catch. Showed me this tweet. That showed up. This is this is hilarious. Gabby tweeted at us at box of oddities. I haven't listened to all of your podcasts yet. But this is what my friends and i at work. We're looking up one day. One of them is going to school for surgery tech. And it's a link to an article titled how to safely stretch your anus thirty one tips techniques and more and then gabby followed it up with how much can a human anus stretch. The human anus can stretch up to seven inches before taking damage. A raccoon can squeeze into holes as titus four inches. Meaning you can take almost two full raccoons up your ass at least do not this got me thinking. You know it's memorial day weekend and things are opening up again. The pandemic is on the downside. Quarantine is being lifted. We're going to be spending more time with people we don't like and so a good way to deal with. That is just throw out weird fact that hey did you know you. Can you can get to raccoons up your ass. Usually if people hear that and they're intrigued they're the kind of person you want to hang out with anyway and those who are well particular fact real careful. We're always exceptions. Of course the people that are offended. You want to hang out with him. Anyway right themselves from the equation. So i've compiled another one of jeff throws lists of bizarre and interesting facts. I love it to us. As conversation starters or conversation enders actually most of them really would be conversation. Starters for example napoleon bonaparte napoleone yes. I'm familiar one day. He requested that a rabbit hunt be arranged for himself and his men he just wanted to go out and blow away little bonnie so they collected all of these rabbits hundreds of them and they were in cages. They released the rabbits but before napoleon and his men could shoot them. They all charge napoleon and attacked the entire hunting party. Was he gonna do nibble your bomb. I love this. He was attacked by a horde of angry. Bunny that's did you know that. There was a great dane named juliana. They used juliana during world war one. She was actually awarded the blue cross medal. For extinguishing an incendiary bomb juliana. Well done she did it by being on it or hate job gir. All a great dane holds a lot of urine. That's true what do you think. The world's most successful pirate was. Oh names like blackbeard. Come up as the world's most successful pirate was actually a lady named ching she. Oh yes i've read about her. She was a sex worker in china until the commander of the red flag fleet bought her and then married her but he considered her his equal and so she became an active pirate commander in took over the fleet after his death. Actually she would make a really interesting topic all in around. Yeah you're right so expect to hear that from cat catch up in. The eighteen thirties was used as medicine. L. yeah it was sold as a cure for upset stomachs by an ohio. Physician named john cook now. Are we talking tomato ketchup or mushroom ketchup. Or fish catch up. It doesn't say it just says catch up. I know there were eleven million different types of it but it can be traced back to this stomach medicine in the eighteen thirties. Well up can be traced back to the fish sauce that it originated from in asia. But because remember. I did a topic on catch him remember. It was right after the one you did on calendars and i appreciate your attitude right now. Andrew jackson had a pet parrot. Amazing yes and in true. Andrew jackson style. He spent hours each day dealing with no he wasn't doing with it but maybe verbally because he taught his parrot to swear sir to curse. He thought it was hilarious. Unfortunately at his funeral his parrot they brought his parents and his parrot started swearing and had to be removed at his funeral. That was attended the funeral. I wanted his parrot at the funeral. It's wonderful so maybe that was his plan to teach the parrot. Swear and then tell people. He wanted his parrot at the funeral so as parrot would swear at his funeral that's was his equivalent of being shot out of a cannon maybe when world war two ended in russia. They celebrated in a different way. They just got liquor it up. Oh yeah they drink so much liquor so much vodka that they ran out. I've been there this week. When the war ended street parties broke out the engulfed the soviet union. They lasted for days. All of the nation's vodka reserves ran out in twenty two hours a lot of vodka russia. That's amazing thing on was it. Did you do anything on pineapples about how that was a status symbol or did we just mention. It just talked about top five kind of thing. Yeah people used to rent the pineapples. Yes yeah in. The eighteenth century in england you were rich if you had a pineapple and that was a status symbol so they would pay ridiculous amounts of money for a pineapple not to eat it they would just carry it around so people would see. They had one.

"States and those barbary states were morocco algeria tunis and tripoli and let their christian counterparts many muslim or barbary pirates saw their activities as part of a holy war. So you know the holy work. I guess was still new enough. And they were still cutting. It was still in their psyche. So islam heavily influenced these pirates activities and methods they were not allowed to enslave fellow moslems and as a result they hedge to rely on kidnapping and enslaving sailors of other faiths and labor. Like you were saying they would steal them. Nap them the only targeted christian ships as they saw their actions as an extension of these wars that dated back to the first crusade so they really targeted the christians. The guy who got a lot of this information from was joseph mogul and he wrote the article western religions influence on piratical endeavors during the golden age of piracy. God it right every read have yeah a little catchier title but it did have a lot of good information and he really. I thought summed it up. Well so i wanted to quote him when i'm coming up this little piece of my a bit here. A he says quote with religious wars and religious divides creating political space for piracy to occur. Individuals motivated by faith were able to rationalize theft and violence like politics and economics religion was inextricably linked to piracy. Wow who would've thought that was really crazy. Yeah so i also wanted just to mention some notable pirates and their notable in that they are women. So i have three. Oh and kinda just give a little bit of story behind them because it's just interesting Because we always think about men as pirates framing. I even saw that. Women were considered to be bad luck if they were on the ship chore. Well i gotta say the most successful pirate of all time was in fact a woman named ching she so she was chinese and she commanded eighty thousand outlaws during the qing dynasty in the early nineteenth century. While as saying that's it. How did she keep them all in check. I can't even how many ships that a lot. I don't know how i mean. Maybe it'll say no. I don't think. I don't think i wrote that down. So chinky is translated to chains widow. So chang the. I was a formidable commander of the red flag fleet of pirate ships. So there were her husband's purchase he managed to unite many rival chinese pirate organisations and he married ching she in eighteen one and she actually participated fully in her husband's piracy. She was on board literally flight yet she was she was doing it so chang apparently chose ching she to be his wife because she was a shrewd businesswoman. It has said so this is interesting. She used secrets. She learned as a prostitute to wield power over her wealthy and politically connected. Clients oh Though as though there is no real documentation to back that particular climate but it is kind of fun so i because why not sometimes especially. What is the woman to do right. You gotta use with you. You can't So six years into their marriage. Chen died through some maneuvering it. There was a lot of maneuvering. And i'm not going to go through it. All she was able to solidify her command of her leit. O i mean the red flag fleet Rule she's rule rather Went undefeated but despite attempts by the qing dynasty officials the portuguese navy and the east india company to vanquish it because they must have been plundering. I love them. you know..

"Hello and welcome back from wonder media network. I'm jenny kaplan and this is encyclopedia. Were manica. Today's villanova ask has a bloody rags to riches tale some consider her the most successful pirate in history and she got away scot-free despite years of plunder. Let's talk about the pirate. Queen chung show chung show was born should young in southeast china in seventeen seventy. Five historians don't know much about her early life but she soon became a prostitute for a floating brothel in guangzhou. A city also known by westerners westerners as canton in eighteen one when junk show was twenty six. She had her first run. In with the pirate young guy he was the commander of the red flag fleet a horde of two hundred ships with thousands of pirate underlings junctures beauty struck the commander and he wanted therefore himself some accounts say that he ordered his men to raid the brothel and kidnapped juncture to be his bride others say that he just asked junk should marry him and she agreed in exchange for sheriff his power and plunder together they ruled the red flag fleet and formed the cantonese pirate coalition the fleet included more than seventeen hundred ships and more than fifty thousand pirates the couple of opted junkies second in command establishing official air john shit also gave birth to two sons then eighteen seven just six years after they got married young he died in a rebellion juncture seized her opportunity rather than pass the power to the appointed air she took over control of the red flag fleet and establish push the air as her own right hand man. She was a strict leader. She created a system of government with its own laws and taxes plunder had to be registered and the pirates could keep twenty percent of what they stole. There were firm rules around captured women two girls. She deemed ugly. Ugly were immediately released. Pirates could take beautiful women as their wives but they had to be faithful reap or infidelity was punishable by death deserters orders from the fleet would also be hunted down and killed under junctures rule. The red flag fleet captured villages for miles along the coast. She was called the terror of south china and she took down chinese portuguese and british naval ships. The chinese government was desperate to end the junction reign of terror. They offered amnesty the pirate fleet. If they ended their criminal activities around eighteen ten john says right hand man started negotiations with the government but failed to make real headway juncture then took matters into her own hands. She marched arm into the governor's office with seventeen women until dron. Her negotiation was quite successful. Almost all of her thousands of underlings walk free without giving any all they have to do kneel before the governor governor juncture herself refused that part of the deal she demanded that the government allow her to marry her right hand man they wed with the governor owner as a witness and finally neil to thank him at the end of the ceremony junction successfully negotiated her way from pirate queen to very wealthy free woman. "The I heart podcast channel. Okay. Well, so you mentioned before the break, that pirating was sort of an equal opportunity profession, and that makes sense when you think about it, because if you're on the run from the Royal Navy or whatever the race or gender of your crewmates isn't going to be a top priority. For the most part parts welcomed all comers, and then have to be pretty enticing for people who felt repressed or restricted on land. I'm guessing. Right. Like what did they have to lose? Yeah. That makes sense. And I do think a great example of that mentality or the bands of Jewish pirates that took the open ocean during the early seventeen hundreds, this is honestly something I'd never heard about before this week, and apparently historians are still piecing together their history as well. I was reading that just in this past decade, several graveyards were found in the Caribbean. And many of the tombstones their feature Hebrew, writing and stars of David right, alongside those iconic school and crossbones symbols. I mean that is pretty wild. So I hadn't heard about this either. But what made so many Jewish people go pirate. Well, I guess the seeds of it were actually planted in the very same month. Columbus, set sail back in fourteen ninety two. So after sending Columbus on his way, the king and Queen of Spain ordered the expulsion of all Jews and Muslims from the country, Portugal, did the same thing just a few years later. So these Spanish Portuguese Jews set up the find new homes and many of them wound up settling on Caribbean islands. And in fact, by the seventeen twenty s when Jewish pirates, I set sail an estimated twenty percent of Kingston Jamaica's population was descended from Jewish exiles. Yeah. So a few of these Jews started. Captaining their own pirate ships, and Kristen than with names, like Queen Esther, and the shield of Abraham. And for the most part, these Jewish pirates, exclusively target Spanish and Portuguese ships, not surprisingly because this was really seen as payback for those generations of unjust treatment. I mean, this is fascinating. So it sounds like we're still uncovering the full history of Jewish pirates. But I am curious. Are there any notorious ones we should know about like who's the Blackbeard of Jewish pirates? I'm not sure about that. Exactly. But I think my favorite was probably schmooze Palaccio, who supposedly joined in a number of pirate raids against the Dutch and Spanish ships. But here's the thing about he was actually a rabbi. Wait. He was a rabbi. That's kind of an oxymoron, right? Apparently not. I mean by most accounts, Bilacci was also pretty pious. Not only did he insists that his crew donate a tenth of their treasure to charity. He also made sure they all kept kosher during their voyage is amazing and no shellfish. But. What we're talking about how was this drastic kind of escape for people, and another great example of that. The many women who built new lives for themselves that see so most of them earned their keep as servants cooks prostitutes. But a few also found work as merchant sailors, naval officers, and even pirates, there's Irish pirate named grace Amoly and in the sixteenth century, she became one of the few female pirates to captain her own ship. And she made a pretty frightening. Name yourself all along the coast of Ireland, like she had a bunch of really intense scars on her face, which he claimed were from being attacked by an eagle, and if that wasn't bad enough. She also reportedly gave birth to a youngest son while aboard her ship, and then proceed to fight off invaders with her baby in one hand and a sword into other. Yeah. That's pretty impressive. And definitely something Blackbeard can't claim to have done, but I think for my money, the undisputed Queen of female pirates and honestly, maybe just pirates in general has got to be kept in ching. She now in the early nineteenth century, she spent her youth, working as a cortisone on a floating brothel in canton, China now, during this time she made a name for herself as this really shrewd businesswoman, and apparently, she had a knack for blackmail, and would often use the secrets that she'd heard as a prostitute, and she would do this in order to control her wealthy and influential clients. So as you might imagine this was a pretty attractive skill to a pirate, which is how she came to marry this other very famous pirate. One of the South China Sea, and his name was ching is sow and this guy was no slouch when it came to pirating and by the time he married, the twenty six year old change. She was in eighteen one Chang. Had already United bunch of rival pirate gangs into what he called the red flag fleet. So did she have any power or saucer where she kind of just figurehead? No, she was definitely very active participant in her husband's enterprise. In fact, many of these stories report that she actually demanded equal control of the fleet as a condition of their marriage, and her role really only grew as time went on. So it was only six years into their marriage that Chang passed away, suddenly and this was at the age of forty two and a few weeks later changed. She took her husband's place, as the leader of the reds lively, which to me, sounds a little suspicious husband suddenly dies. Do we know how big that fleet was that? She inherited what we don't know how many ships are men. She inherited from her husband, but we do have a pretty good estimate of the size of earth, a few years after she took over, and that's because in eighteen nine her forces captured an East India company, employee named Richard glass pool. Now after he was released a few months later, he writes this account of his experience, and it included this detailed estimate of change. She's forces. So according to him, they were roughly eighty thousand pirates under her command over eighteen hundred ships in her fleet. And so, to give you an idea of just how vast her entre was considered that Blackbeard himself commanded only four ships and three hundred pirates and that was at his peak. I mean, does numbers really are saying, like eighty thousand pirates and eight hundred shifts like I don't know how you could actually keep that many pirates in check. Well, she borrowed from other pirates play books in that regard. Because once she took command she quickly, instituted this strict code of laws for all of her mental follow and strict really is the key word here, just as an example, if any pirate disobeyed superior's orders or started giving orders of their own. They were immediately beheaded right on the spot. And, you know, she had some really specific rules about female captives that you probably won't find in any other pirate codes, like there was this one rule that said, if a pirate took a female prisoner for his wife, he had to be faithful to her, and couldn't sleep around really interesting. But, you know, I, I am still kind of hung up on this sheer size for. I mean her probably like you could see it rivaling some other nations entire armed forces from that time. I mean probably. So, in fact, under change, she's command. The red flag fleet fought off not only the Chinese military, but the East India company, the Portuguese navy. Vy and they were undefeated for three full years until change. She finally retired altogether back in eighteen ten weight. So she retired. Like I didn't even know pirates could do that. I mean, of course not many of them did. And even fewer if any retired in a way that change she did. And, you know, you look back at her retirement, it was actually part of a deal that she made with the Chinese government. And, you know, after years of defeat the officials were just desperate to get change. She out of the spotlight by any means necessary. And so they extended this offer to her where she and her forces would surrender and go their separate ways. And this was in return for amnesty and full pensions for every single member of the crew. We all eighty thousand of them got pensions. Yeah, isn't that while she and her forces were seen as such a big threat that the Chinese government, basically paid them all to stop being pirate. I mean, it was definitely a one of a kind deal at least as far as I can tell. That is amazing. And I know we're talking about criminals. Yeah. It is pretty cool that not only were there female pirates, but kind of the most bad ass parts of them all tend to be women here. Yeah. Yeah. There's actually this great quote that I wanted to read from a pirate historian and the author of a book called pirate women. The her name is Laura silk done, come and here, she's talking about that attraction to pirating and the freedom, it entailed that we mentioned earlier, and she's talking specifically in this case, about female pirates. I really think this could apply to almost all the ones that we've talked about today. So here's what she says, all of these pirates had ships that were very different and methods that were very different, but I think they share the desire to control their own fates and the desire for freedom from convention would unite all these women their hopes to escape the normal and be a part of something adventurous would tie all these women together, and we all share that desire for adventure, not the desire for slitting throats plundering the high seas. But one can empathize with the desire to have a say in how their life goes. Yeah. I feel like the old wanna have saying how life goes, and I like that. How about we end on that note and start.

"Here. Is this shit? My friend. The best God, we can end it here guys. And Trump Trump your Mike right now. Boom arm. He's knocking. To hit it. But the pad dammit curse preparedness for myself. Now, unfortunately for the emperor Jane is one of the most brilliant naval commanders in world history. How brilliant you ask. I don't really know because I'm not that smart. And when I clicked on the things they were confusing. We have battle with the emperor's forces are the first written record of several naval techniques that we still use today. In fact, in a desperate effort to weaken. Replete, China's top naval commander sent out suicide boats, which were basically just fishing ships filled with explosives and on fire, and she just fucking put them out refitted the ships, and then added them. She's seriously. She's like she's the kid of the Nerf gunfighter just takes all the Nerf gun bullets. Put them in his pocket goes. I love the guys imagining the guys the other side who set exploding fire ships to her and that you just put him out like, okay. All right. New plan guys. Let's FedEx some dynamite. And hope they start to close to a furnace. We did not think that through a lot of water right next to the fire thing we. Now, she has those stupid stupid another one. We didn't fuller again was on us. I don't mean to downplay her like naval ability. But that's not you didn't invent putting it out and stealing. That's. That's. We don't use that anymore. Send me a ship at some fire and full of explosives. Into a. This how bad the defeat was when the battle was over shis fleet had lost only forty men and zero ships. She gained ships. If I'm doing. Tips the head of the emperor's fleet on the other hand sent a letter back to China lying about what happened when home and killed himself. She's must suck to you. One of those guys that died it's like getting a career ending injury in preseason. Exactly. Exactly what the fun for years. She alluded. British and Portuguese bounty hunters until the desperate emperor finally asked the help of the only navy larger than hers the Portuguese fleet. Oh, wow. Back when Portugal had something to be proud of other than just not being Spain. So she did what she had to do when the chips are down when you're staring certain death in the face. You. Created distraction negotiate the sweetest fucking deal. Imaginable is what she did. I'm talking, of course, about the battle of the Tigers mouth. That's what she married the print support to go on the condition that he had to give her half his fleet. Right. Is that what happened? And also the king of Portugal and got the other half to she's good at this. What we know about that battle is this the red flag fleet was defeated in a series of skirmishes by the Portuguese led not by Shiva, but by her son in law slash lover. Because should was negotiating amnesty from the Qing dynasty. Okay. You guys are all picturing a musical adaptation. Love story about Donald Trump and Jared Kushner. So the deal she made allowed her and all of her men to turn themselves in do no jail time and keep all the money. They stole pretty much every white collar criminals. Plea deal is what you're saying. They've actually made a movie about this, the smartest hor in the room. I'm so that's what she did of her entire personal fleet of seventeen thousand plus men less than four hundred faced any consequences for years of piracy and retired. I to go on Jong where the governor annulled her doctrine of her son lover, so she could marry him. Then you'll to Macau where she opened a brothel and casino really wouldn't want that caper work to be embarrassing. She died filthy rich at age sixty nine sixty nine live by the hor- die by. Surrounded by her friends and loved ones already getting jealous all of us. She's sorry. Best person. We've done a citation needed on. I think. Alright. So if you had to summarize what you've learned in one sentence. What would it be history's greatest pirate and possibly naval strategists was still cold. Steve's wife. All right. Are you ready for the quiz ER? Okay. That didn't even whatever. Because. Okay. Like, what's the best feature of a pirate theme casino brothel? Hey thar. She blows.

"Guy. Hard shift to the episode so upon marrying her husband, she changed her name to Jiang e Sal, literally wife of Zing, and she said about uniting his Alrighty sizeable fleet lose to sizable this should just bound this fleet. That's what they do. Excellent. She also. We got you got heath. She adopted her husband's stepson slash lover, Chong Poh. This was the south of China. And she made sure that he was officially declared Jiang's air now by eighteen o four the coalition. They had formed together was one of the largest fleets in Chinese history. And it gained the nickname the red flag fleet at people see a fleet coming into like. Oh god. Dammit. The red flag. Fuck again, they were just like twenty eight days ago. All right. To surrender all the chocolate and copies of the notebook again. I don't. So years later Jiang died. Suddenly sources vary on how he died some say fell overboard during typhoon some say he died of a sudden illness. And of course, some say he was killed by his wife. Not not to face though. Nobody says. It's it's cool. He was married. So he died inside long before that. All right. I was looking is Liz typhoon, sudden illness marriage. It's like a the service. Hover her husband died. So Jiang changed her name again to Jiang, which translates to widow of j widows with alibis I think is what exactly. Yeah. So she United his fleet with the second and third largest fleets in China and took her stepson Cheung PO as a lover interesting. I feel like somebody's gotta make a movie about this. Right. This is an interesting story. Woody Allen off the top of my head. And since a woman couldn't officially be in charge. She also made Trump, oh, the official captain of the fleet on the condition that he would swear to be loyal to and be commanded by her. And only her again, he agreed. Okay. All right. We don't know how dad died, but let's see we do know that the son took over his entire fleet of pirate ships and is now banging his step. Mom. Okay. We definitely know. How dad die? We got a hint. So with her power, fully, consolidated. She wrote an enforced her infamous code of laws. Now, I'm going to tell you what these laws were in a second. But just a recap the story so far it took this woman eight years to go from both prostitute to commander of the largest pirate fleet in world history. And now she gathered all the pirates together to set down some motherfucking rules. It's like the beginning of the warriors. She's fucking awesome. Lisbeth Warren here we are. Anyway, here's some other rules rule number one. If you make up your own orders or disobey my orders, I will cut off your head. Now this rule is actually also how the game show jeopardy was conceives like Jiang. Get me a beer. Oh fuck. No. I meant Chang. Would you? Please get me here. Got damage. This is so hard. That's the only rule you need though. That's like do you need to have. At least you did so rule. Number two. No stealing from the public fund. We'll talk about that later or villages under her protection or a cut off your head. Basically, she established the first ever protection racket. Okay. Are they still doing the prostitute thing at this point on the boats because if heels like the pirate mafia thing is really carrying the team just fine. So for Zonta integration. They don't need by the way. This was not the first ever protection racket by any stretch of the imagination. Sometimes alleges tosses the superlative into make his sentence. Sound? Sometimes. I like to think of it as conversational spices weaving. Spices. Anyway, she installed a purser on every ship that would count up all the booty which was then turned over to her the finder got to keep twenty percent. But the rest went to the public fund which was her and if you fail to do this. She would whip you and if you failed again, that's right off your fucking head. You guys laugh at herbalife still has this in its bylaws. It's gonna turn this Doubloon into a corkscrew, and I'm your eyeball. Welcome to cut co knives. Hooker's rule number four take shore leave or desert your post without asking and she'd cut off your ears because you weren't using them. Do it again should cut off the rest of your head. There's a to her. Here's what I thought. You said, no sure leave not know shore leave. Also, by the way, we're a lot of low level like pirate cashiers doing that desert for while. And then come back and be like, all right. I'm back. Podcast in workout ready for the ear slicer. Now unsurprisingly given a first job Jiang hated rapists, over as you can imagine at the time pirates were like, the third rapist profession just behind professional, rapists. And of course, the number one spot Catholic priests put an end to that rape female captive should cut off your head. Okay fair, but which ones buses. Motivational purposes. I don't think it matters. In fact, if you wanted to have sex with the female captive, you had to marry her remain loyal to her and treat her well or should cut off your head hell if you had consensual sex with a female prisoner. But neither of you wanted to get married. She'd cut off your head. And then drowned the female prisoner Jesus. Question. Mrs jiang. Yes. Chinese pirate with an American accent. Yeah. Just quick note for you. So the penalty for rape is beheading. Yes. Yes. It is. Right. Right. And the penalty for consensual is beheading plus something else. It just seemed like that's flipped around. You know, what I mean that you know, what you when you say that does seem backwards now. And you're killing the woman for consensual. I feel like you're set up a situation where you're already married the chivalrous thing to do a serrate relating, right? You know, what the moment you started? It. I got it. Yeah. That is not great. I am going to chop your head off and move on rule. Six b I do not take notes. Finally, no more calling it plunder. This is real from now on it was to be called transferring a shipment of goods. VDI on those ships to.

"She came to marry this other very famous pirate one of the South China Sea, and his name was ching is sow. And this was no slouch when it came to pirating by. At the time he married the twenty six year old change she is was in, I think, eighteen, oh one Chang had already United bunch of rival pirate gangs into what he called the red flag fleet. So did chink she have any power or software where she kind of just this figurehead? No, she was definitely a very active participant in her husband's enterprise. In fact, many of these stories report that she actually demanded equal control of the fleet as a condition of their marriage, and her role really only grew as time went on. So it was only six years into their marriage that Chang passed away suddenly. And this was at the age of forty two and a few weeks later change. She took her husband's place as the leader of the red flag fleet, which to me sounds a little suspicious like our husbands suddenly dies did. Do we know how big that fleet was that she inherited what we don't know how many ships are men. She inherited from her husband, but we do have a pretty good. Estimate of the size of her fleet of few years after she took over and that's because in eighteen zero nine, her forces captured an East India company employee named Richard glass pool. Now, after he was released a few months later, he writes this account of his experience and it included this detailed estimate of change. She's forces. So according to him, they were roughly eighty thousand pirates under her command over eighteen hundred ships in her fleet. And so to give you an idea of just how vast her entourage was considered that Blackbeard himself commanded only four ships and three hundred pirates and that was at his peak. I mean, those numbers really are saying like eighty thousand pirates and eight hundred ships. Like I, I don't know how you could actually keep that many pirates and check welching. She borrowed from other pirates play books in that regard. Because once she took command, she quickly instituted this strict code of laws for all of her mental follow and strict really is. The key word here. And just as an example, if any pirate disobeyed superior's orders or started giving orders of their own, they were immediately beheaded right on the spot. And she had some really specific rules about female captives that you probably won't find any other pirate codes. Like there was this one rule that said, if a pirate took a female prisoner for his wife, he had to be faithful to her and couldn't sleep around. That's really interesting. But you know, I still kind of hung up on this sheer size of our operation. I mean, her fleet probably like you could see rivaling some other nations entire armed forces from that time. I mean, probably so in fact, under change, she's command. The red flag fleet fought off not only the Chinese military, but the East India company, the Portuguese navy, and they were undefeated for three full years until changed. She finally retired altogether back in eighteen ten weight says she retired like I didn't even know pirates do that. I mean, of course. Not many of them did and even fewer, if any retired in a way that ching she did and you know, you look back in her retirement. It was actually part of a deal that she made with the Chinese government. And you know, after years of defeat, the officials were just desperate to get change. She out of the spotlight by any means necessary. And so they extended this offer to her wherein she and her forces would surrender and go their separate ways. And this was in return for amnesty and full pensions for every single member of the crew. Wait all eighty thousand of them. Got pensions. Yeah, isn't that wild? So she and her forces were seen as such a big threat that the Chinese government basically paid them all to stop being pirate. I mean, it was definitely a one of a kind deal, at least as far as I can tell..
