Break free from the ordinary day to day with the help of Skittles chewy candy. Skittles is a must in my candy jar, movie snack, even my secret to an afternoon pick me up. And I don't even care who knows it. Add a splash of joy to your day with Skittles. There's nothing better than fruity fun that tickles your taste buds. Taste the rainbow. How do we reimagine our society as a place where we all feel safe? That question is at the heart of Carmen Perez's work as a civil rights activist, including roles as president and CEO of the Gathering for Justice, movement to end racial inequities in the justice system, and co -chair of the Women's March. Carmen shares the importance of learning from our elders, specifically the lessons she learned from more than 20 years working alongside Harry Belafonte, the life -changing loss that shapes her pursuit of justice and of joy, and what happens when a person who prides herself on her strength learns to lean into her softness. Carmen, thank you for doing this. Well, thank you for having me, Alicia. It's been quite some time, so I'm happy we're able to have a conversation today. Carmen, your sense of justice is what frames your entire life and your entire work. And so I think it's really important that we begin with the origin story of how that sense of justice was developed, which was not in a classroom, though you would later go on to cultivate this sense in a classroom. It's really in your own life, in one of the most trying moments of your life, that this lesson is crystallized. Absolutely. I grew up in a Chicano, Mexican -American family, and I grew up in Oxnard, which was right outside of Los Angeles. And we, at a very early age, learned how to navigate the things we were experiencing, sexual trauma, domestic violence, alcoholism, gang violence, police surveillance. That was something that we learned very young. And luckily, I played basketball, I played ball from the age of five all the way to college. I ran track, played volleyball or showed up to volleyball games, I like to say, and played softball all year round. And so that kind of became my therapy. I remember my coach, I would come to practice experiencing something traumatic and my coach would be like, run it off Perez. I just didn't know that the family that I loved and the family that I was a part of were generations involved in gangs or involved in incarceration. I had a brother, Carlos, who was just such a good guy and would get stopped by police just being profiled. And there was an incident that happened in my formative years. I was coming out of a basketball game and he gave me and all my little friends a ride. We were wearing our basketball uniforms and they happened to be red, the colors of the school, and we were stopped by police at gunpoint. And it wasn't until recently that I began to realize, wow, I've been impacted by police violence. It wasn't anything that I thought was abnormal. It was the way of life in Oxnard, California. We always had police contact. There was a lot that we experienced, a lot that I witnessed. And I think all of that then manifested in itself when I lost my sister, Patricia. She was killed right before our birthdays. Her and I were one day apart in two years. She's two years older than me. She was buried on my 17th birthday. And so from that moment as a little girl, I knew I wanted to change the world. It was so weird, even though I had experienced all this trauma and didn't know it was trauma or experienced injustice, didn't know it was injustice. I used to say I wanted to change the world. And the catalyst for me stepping into that power was really when I lost Patricia. When Patricia passed away, I felt like a piece of me died and I had to bury parts of me. I buried my art. I used to write poetry and dance hip hop and pretend I was Eazy -E and I used to love to rap. And I put that all away. I really felt like I buried my joy. I didn't want to live my life feeling like I could experience joy without her. But I remember thinking like I had life and I had to live life for her and I had to live life because she didn't have it anymore. And so everything that I did was in memory of her. I want to put a pin in your personal story and ask about your theory of change. When you imagine justice in this country, what is that holistic vision of what the alternative is? imagination For me, it's really about feeling safe. You know, when I think about law enforcement and my husband, J. Jordan, says this often, we don't have a public safety response system right now. We have a crime response system. So police respond to crime. They don't respond in a way that is safe for communities. And I believe that our communities actually could do better if they're well resourced in order to have what they need to thrive. Quality education, quality health care, rec centers, all these different things is what really makes a thriving economic mobility jobs make a community thrive. When I think about the work that I try to spread in the world is not the absence of violence, but it's the presence of love and justice, right? Making sure that our communities aren't being harmed, that our people aren't being harmed and that we actually value each other. And so for me, this fight around police accountability is now larger than just seeking justice for a family member or loved ones.

There's been a lot of optimism, but one Philadelphia sports broadcaster where Harris is the owner of an NBA team says fans shouldn't get their hopes up. Sports broadcaster on Fox 29 in Philly and WIP Radio host Howard Eskin says when it comes to Harris, going from Daniel Snyder to Josh Harris is better, but that's like going from zero to one. His reasoning is Harris's choices in Philly for the team. Incorrect decisions on hiring people from the general manager to the coach. Eskin says commanders fans should also prepare for ticket costs to rise a lot as they did after Harris bought the 76ers, but says he hopefully the commanders get a new stadium out of this and his message overall to fans here. Did he stand in that costume for four to 6 hours? A fair bit of time was spent in that costume. But he didn't have to stay. He didn't have to stay there. Sometimes he could, because that's something he could he could dissolve, basically, and show up somewhere else. Oh, okay. And so but yeah, he's been a fair bit of time in the cost of people to go talk to the tree. But the one thing that we did do is that we made sure to have the scene in which morpheus talks to talks to his son. And I played his son in a box with my head. Under a table. The day before the rec center, I could do it. And it's like okay, do it double. Two front clips. Two, my first time ever first time in diving practice. Okay. How? He's like, just do what you did, but hold it longer. And I ended up letting go a little late because I held longer than I wanted, and I should have. "Of funny pre flop thing that happens in live poker so the main question here is why do people or the pool. That plays live one two. Why do they raise to such a large size. Why they opened seven eight x we briefly touched on one of the reasons that commonly quoted. And that's the in the field so that you're playing against your players instead of going massively multi way every time you said that you actually had a like a story or an experiment. That you think illustrates why people why everyone that opens such a massive size low six cash. Yes so as a social experiment. I believe it was in the seventies or the eighties and basically the experiment was stay. Locked ten monkeys in a room. That had a ladder and at the top of the ladder. I can't remember exactly what it was or call it a banana. Just because monkeys like bananas so they have a banana at the top of the ladder and the first monkey that ran up the ladder to get the banana pressured water fired on the monkeys in the room and the second time a monkey ran to get a banana pressured water soaked all the monkeys in the room so it didn't take very long for them to figure out like y'all don't go up that ladder right and so what what the researchers did was they one by one. They took one monkey out. Replace it with a brand new monkey that had never had never gotten soaked at had never had the downside to going for the banana and it would scale the ladder to get an all the other monkeys would grab it and pull it down. They would they would not let it. Climb the ladder right and over time. They replaced all of the monkeys that had been soaked by water with brand new monkeys that had never experienced downside of going up the ladder but the brand new monkeys to a monkey would grab a newcomer as it climbed the ladder and pull it down despite never getting the negative consequence just because that was what all the other monkeys were doing right and so that to me is always been like a great metaphor for why you know a lot of especially old school type strategies and poker but more specifically preform poker Just y like yeah you gotta monkey. That's opening eight x and then you're like. Oh what does that monkey no. It must know something that. I don't know so i'm just gonna open eight x two because all the other monkeys are doing it. Yeah i think. That's i think that's a lot of what's happening here. I think in cash you know like a kind of an addition to like your story that i think is adds even more humor to the situation. Is that like when the first one to game. I asked this to you when the first one game opens in the casino for the day and everybody sits down for a new game. Like how does the first guy decide. What what size he wants to open to and like how does he land on sixteen x sixteen dollars eight x there. Wasn't anybody opening to begin with but that's very still very likely the size that they probably land on and it's just i don't know it's kind of funny. How like even without seeing other people do it. That a lot of people just seem to land on really really really big open sizes. Yeah i mean it's like if everybody opened like sixteen all day long and four new players sat down and they all started opening to ten. I guarantee you. Everybody would be opening to ten like within two hours. It would just like change mystically right like these guys opening to ten. They must know something. I'm going to change right. And what i find. The saddest part about this is like you have well intentioned. Well studied poker players. That will sometimes sit down in these games and start opening to eight x like just because everybody else is doing it. Just i mean. I think that's. That's if if we had like a follow up till like this question it would just be me asking people who play live cash. Add like are no regular. Seven x eight x openers. Why do you raise that size. You have like a good strategic reason for landing on that number or are you doing it because you want to fit in and it's uncomfortable to draw attention to yourself by opening really smaller really bigger or no some some nonstandard number another great question to pose the opposite right of like if this were online and not in the live environment right and you had somebody opening eight x pre like four people at your online table. Would you start opening eight x as well just like the other players are doing it right or would you just like capitalize and print money. Because they're risking way more than they should with very inappropriate hands. Yeah actually thought of like a funny analogy for this similar to like your monkey experiments story i play a lot of basketball and one of the one of the now that i thought this was imagine you went to the rec center to play some hoops. And let's say there's let's say there's money on this game to mission similar to poker there's actually something to win and you notice that everybody in the rec center. The only shots they took were half court shots and people were like breaking them and just firing them up. Would you also shoot half court shots. Like only half court shots because you want to fit in and that's what everyone else is doing or would you just take everyone's money by buying normal basketball and making lay ups and not growing a bombs and that's essentially what people i think that's essentially what live cash players are doing. They're saying like well. This is not how i play online. This is not how the professionals that i watched who play like really high stakes cash or these are not the is that they open to. But that's what's happening here. So i guess i'm just going to jack up these shorts instead of doing my best to win. Money playing strategically sound or more strategically sound strategy than i mean. What a most disappointed in are the people that ought to know better because like it is part of our like basic human biology to use social proof to our advantage right i. I've i read other studies. About how like they found these massive pileups. That happened when like a bunch of cars starts swerving all at the same time. And sometimes it's just the car in front of you. Changes lanes to the middle and for very quickly and like you assume that they're doing it for a specific reason right and so you change and then the person behind you changes lanes and then you've got a bunch of people doing a dangerous thing for no reason at all just because the person in front of them did something dangerous and i think the like most of the time if somebody swerves in front of you. There's a reason right so like there's a reason why need to get out of the way because there's something in the road and it's beneficial but like it's never a good reason in like a tactical environment like poker to just do something because all the other people are doing it because like the reality is doing things differently than your opponents is like where you get your edge from. Yeah so like you want to play as bad as them and win money. No you play differently than them so that you win money right like that's where the edges but live poker become you know it just becomes very tempting see people that like otherwise would never even consider doing something like over limping jackson off just over limping jackson off because like other people are doing it. So like okay cool. Let's just fit in like one thing i'd add onto that too is like when you look around the live one to table like are those types of players that you want to resemble like. Is that who you marry your strategy against the average brek or even.

But i mean during the rest of the game before that pushed into overtime and everything else is. It is it. I have not been arena. So i've been. I've been to one game in the last year. I went to the nets warriors on opening night at barclays. Because i wanted to see durant's debut in front of nobody and how surreal that would be building so i went there but that is the only game of vinci because we don't have any direct access to guys. There's no point in me being there and watching on tv so i don't know how we can. They can to hear everything. Like if you've got good material in the middle of the game could you just showed out and just like trash. Talk san van. Gundy i you absolutely could i was in the was in the to hundreds i was you know wasn't but if you're like the hundreds i think certainly the courtside first of all as as a fat guy now is the time to go. Courtside you're not smushed that we were we were we used to work for. Msu we had a show on there they gave us courtside seats. What time it was honestly one of the worst sporting spirits. I was mushed into a folding chair. I felt like i was in a rec center. You know what i mean like. I felt like i was a middle school graduation. It did not feel great. My thighs were chafing. While i was sitting down somehow so i will say as it comfort. Now is the time to go to a game if you're plus is if you're plus sized cutie out there because there's nobody washed into you right you just sit with you you know but everything else. The other aspect of it was it was surreal. It was weird it up until that moment. It didn't really you re you can totally hear what's going on. If you're in the lower section you could one hundred percent. I mean if i was shouting i could probably have like gotten somebody somebody. Just go in there with an air horn you could completely disrupt the free. Throw for sure Team it'll be okay. Yeah that's right. Yeah someone.

But if I were to run for governor Under the platform of doing away with the property tax. You think I might get elected? You know how I'm gonna you? You think so? Johnny? Yes. All right. We'll see cause I have to pay this thing every years. Everybody else than most. You folks ripping in your mortgage, so you don't know It's just part of your mortgage payment. But mine is not part of my mortgage payment, so At the end of February. I gotta cough up, you know thousands of dollars for property tax. And it just goals me every time I have to do it, so you don't pay your fair share Fair share. Here's the deal. We just If you buy a car, right? Have you ever done this? You go get your license plate on. Do you see on the bill of sale? You see that You paid a sales tax on that car. Now some states will come back to you and make you pay a property tax on that car every year. Which I think is reprehensible, But there's no difference in that and making you do it on your house. Your property or whatever. In other words, you never fully own your property. Because they can come and take it if you don't pay your property tax. And I just think that's wrong. I don't know. And I've racked my brain on this tomb. I don't know of anything else. That is taxed multiple times like this. Over and over again. Over and over and over again. And if the taxes high enough like it isn't some of these states? I mean, in a few years you paid as much in taxes is the property's worth. And they keep coming back for more every year. Well, how do you expect us to fund the schools and other that? Why did you have to find a better way? I think it's a horrible tags. Think it z Utah met regressive. Good grief. Now. I was looking at the Constitution today to see if there's anything in the Constitution even talks about I mean, they don't talk about taxes much anyway. But it's apparently not unconstitutional. But it is certainly to me immoral. That you go back every year on a man or a woman's property. And you tax them again. They didn't buy it again. You're just gonna be coming back this year, coming back for more, and we're gonna up. But this time we're gonna take a property tax again. I'm going with the hell man I bought this years ago. I paid the tax on what? I bought it. Why am I gonna pay every year on this property? That means you don't own it means they own it. And then taking any time they want to as long as you don't pay your property take long as you as long as you render under Caesar. You render unto Caesar your property tax and you get to keep your property. Thank you so much. You're so kind. I think it's it. I think it's a travesty and an injustice and I don't know whether I'm the only one out there. Who's upset about property tax, but I think it needs to be outlawed in the state of Tennessee. And they need to be a better way to raise money. And here's something else, too. Some of these municipalities going well, how we gonna make it with? You're going to stop spending so much flipping money. And you? I've seen it around where you know where I live in Brentwood. I mean, it's you know, by and large, it's it's run pretty well. But you're Williamson County spends money on all sorts of crap. They don't need to spend money on. I'll tell you this. This would write me there. I have some of you folks, I'm gonna step on some toes. They built the Williamson County Rec Center on Concord Road. And you know what they built it. Right across the street from the Y M. C. A They already had one. We'll fill. It didn't have tennis courts and stuff and What? I don't go play tennis at the rec center, but I had to pay for the thing. Why didn't this is? What again? You know the Valentine doctor, don't you? Oh, you don't haven't said in a while. The government is there to do? Only with the private sector won't can't or shouldn't do. In the case of building some tennis courts. The private sector will build tennis courts. If there is a need for have enough people want tennis courts, plus the Y over Maryland farms has tennis courts already? So Williamson County came in. This has been many years ago, and they build a rec center. With all sorts of, you know, good stuff. This it's beautiful and all that. But it Z. Not something that the private sector wasn't already doing with Y M C. A and other places and Gold's gym and all these other places that pop up Planet fitness. There. Plenty of places to do this with government fell. We need a big rec center. And so they you know what happened. They had too much money. What we're gonna do with all this money. How about you lower the property Tax Foon? How about you eliminate the property tax? So I know it's going to have to come from somewhere and I'm trying to figure out where that would be. Phil, would you be willing to pay more of a sales tax? I don't know. It depends on how much more Yeah, I think so is long as I'm just being taxed one time when I buy a fricking low for brand what you gonna come to my house, And every time I make a sandwich, you're gonna tax me again. This is ridiculous. And nobody ever says anything about it..

He's telling these people he's in effect going to escort them down the street. I mean, First of all, you're the president of the United States. You understand what restrictions are placed on your movements by Secret service. Why would you even suggest that? Or play the one where he said that he loved him. I guess the head of the Capitol police has resigned. Yes. He's resigned tonight, and I believe that, um well, let me play the Nancy Pelosi Sound like this is cut 102. And I want your reaction to this. She actually, I think pretty clearly here. Makes a statement and says, Hey, look, there's dissembling here. The authorities should have been prepared. They knew that there was a big mob and they should have been prepared. Play one of two. Please rub. I am calling for the resignation of the capital, the chief of the Capitol police, Mr Son and I have received notice from Mr Irving that he is will be submitting his resignation. And we said that we have the after action review, but it goes beyond the Capitol police that goes to the FBI. What was what was the shortcoming in their intelligence that they provided it goes to the Department of Defense. How long did it take for them to respond or anticipate the need for the National Guard. It goes to many other elements of the executive branch, and and I think we have to have a full review. A lot of blame to go go around. I actually agree with the house speaker on this When your reaction Tony Yeah, I agree. 100% I I was I was going to say before you played that this kind of parlays into that, Um, he lied about The National Guard yesterday at about 1 50 yesterday. Ep 26 Excerpt: Converse > Debate

"You're on and it's simply this. If I'm forming my rebuttal while someone is addressing me, I'm not really interested in hearing what it is. They have to say and why yeah, and so the first step is off work to make sure your understanding what the other person is saying to you and why the assessment of that can come later and come a little bit down more down the road when you all are actually agreed about what it is that you're talking about. And so most difficult conversations need two steps. The first is are we understanding each other and more importantly are we understanding what's motivating us to say what we're saying our concerns are and then you move to the assessment level. Unfortunately, we always conflate those we can fly them in a way in which we try and create a debate cuz we're worried about who's right versus trying to understand one another and when you do it, when you engage on that basis alone, you almost never make progress in a conversation.

COVID-19 Learning Hubs

"Over affluent parents organizing private learning pods. You have found that there's actually an alternative emerging for families who don't have the means to hire private nannies or tutors. Tell us about that alternative. Yes, So I've been tracking these all over the country in New York City's Amber disco to Memphis, Tennessee, and they're sometimes called learning Hubbs or learning labs. And these air being organized by cities themselves or by school districts offer groups of students a safe place to go during the day and help with remote learning and free WiFi, which a lot of families don't have. And what's really important is they're either free thes. Cubs or very low cost and subsidised for the families that need it. So what exactly do these learning labs heir Learning hubs look like It's it's combo school, plus aftercare yet, basically so these air, you know, obviously really small groups of kids that's important for Corona virus safety. The locations are ranging from, You know, a school building A Y M C. A. A library. Some organizations are looking at the leasing space is like maybe even an empty university campus or a gym. And then, in some cases, school employees are actually working at thes helps. For example, I remember Station reporter over you has a WW Eno. She visited two of these learning hubs in New Orleans. And, she says, while child care is a really big draw. Families are also coming for the WiFi. Let's take a Listen. Dwight D. Eisenhower Charter School School leaders greet mass clad students as they make their way into the building. School normally serves more than 600 students. But today it's expecting fewer than two dozen It's because in New Orleans public schools are technically still close and learning is entirely virtual. Students that are here are attending the schools learning, huh? The cafeteria. Kids were separated into socially distance groups of nine each, quietly working away on their own device. They are loved in their signs up everywhere for the WiFi for she wants to get on to And then there are a lot of adults floating around to help and all the kids are wearing masks. Faculty are wearing masks and face shields as well. Hubs run by educators. Eisenhower principal Rolanda Green says a lot of students are here. For one thing. It literally is to get Internet access. And if you needed technology, we have it here available for you. City estimates that more than 9000 New Orleans students may not have Internet access for remote learning. It's far more kids in the local learning hubs are currently serving. Eisenhower is part of the inspired Nolan Charter Schools Network, which is funding and operating free hubs for almost 600 students. New Orleans public schools has committed to providing every student with a tablet or a laptop. But the devices aren't very helpful without an Internet connection. You can have a computer and can't utilize Google glass rooms right. That's Timlin, Sam's inspired Nola's director of community engagement. She says the hubs are an essential tool for ensuring equal access to virtual learning. She also points out that in New Orleans, a majority black school district, white Children are more likely to attend. A private school are private and parochial schools are back in session. None of our public schools are So we'll white Children are more likely to be back in the classroom. Black and brown students are mostly learning from home in many cases without reliable Internet. Spirt. Nola's hubs offer both Internet and supervision, but only one or two days a week. And even with staggered attendance, the network says it's at capacity with a wait list more than 200 students long City of New Orleans. Also operating learning hubs out of libraries and rec centers like this one in New Orleans East Just open five days a week. Seven greater as moral to Smith says she's happy to get out of her house. I just think I needed the time away from all the noise and distracted at home to come here and I quietly A peaceful Emily Wolf with the mayor's Office of Youth and Families says the city has tried to make the hubs accessible, especially for low income families and those with no Internet. There is still considerable barriers. Families are responsible for transportation and the hubs get funding from the federal government, which involves a lot of paperwork. You know, we wish we could just have him fill out a simple registration performing get signed up right away. But that made it a little bit slower. And unfortunately, you know, for some families, they see all of that. And It's just a barrier. Wolf says. Family submitted interest forms for more than 1000 students in mid August, But so far only 100 Children are registered. City has room for 500 students and is already looking to expand. While the district's youngest students have the option to return to the classroom in mid September, older students will continue with virtual learning until at least mid October. For NPR

Interview With Mayor John Gates On Partial Reopening

"Com by really mayor John Gates Mayor Gates welcome back to the show. Good to be with you good morning to you. I certainly appreciate your taking the time and there's a lot going on. As Greeley of course, as other cities across the state, indeed across the nation, enjoying a return to some semblance of normalcy. Tell us what that looks like. Well you're right. There is some sense normalcy the fact that where we get the restaurants back open. At least to an extent, you know pretty pretty well, said all along that the two entities that have really suffered from the Kobe closures are restaurants and churches. And the church is still are suffering, unfortunately, due to the fifty person rule, but My wife and I've been out several times since we've been able to sit down and Dine I. Guess It's the small things you appreciate because that surely has been nice. It's kind of fascinating when you think about it because we were talking about this just last week, the fact that going out to a restaurant is like. Taking a world cruise or taking a trip to the moon. Again it is a return to the small things that makes such a difference in in our lives. If there's any good, take away from all this. Maybe that's that. Makes, you appreciate the small things never did. I think I would miss. so much being able to go, sit down, have a cup of coffee with somebody or better yet a meal and while we certainly a lot of carry out. It's not the same as going to sit in a restaurant and catching up on the day and getting warm food versus the. Wolf lukewarm food when the carry out outcome, so that's where they've been great and. I were phone boxes here. Exactly, the Styrofoam box and we're starting to get things open back up the city to the degree that we can which is good. There's a slow rollout occurring today with our fixed up transit buses We're opening municipal court backup today. we've got some Other departments opening drive through or by appointment only so slowly, but surely not quite yet on the cool. The REC centers part of the problem with the pool. and. Even the REC centers is that we've got that fifty person maximum. And we talked a great wink at our city council meeting last night about specifically centennial pool and the to dilemmas. We have one is that we saw that is that at the beginning of this laid off all her stuff seasonal swig. We can obviously get some of them back. To run the pool, but our parks and REC. Director colors that we get. During Summer Day especially these that have been so warm three to four hundred kids centennial pool every day, so if we can only it fifty. That's problematic so while I understand the reason for that in an area that says large as as much square footage of centennial pool. I hope the governor loosens that fairly soon to allow us to adapt at number to a more appropriate number which folks we might be having using them so. Now. We're looking forward to. If I'm not mistaken here under this amended safer at home order, a swimming pools again allowed to reopen. Once those draft guidelines are improved. Final draft of those guidelines will be available on Thursday. Is that what you're hearing is absolutely what I'm hearing. Yeah, so. we're. We're kind of sitting at the ready waiting for some of those. Things to happen I've been A number of local pastors have reached out to me and we feel for them from the standpoint that I spoke to a pastor yesterday. WHO said you know I have eight hundred people in my congregation and I can easily socially distance and keep everybody safe by allowing four hundred in, but the current rules only allow fifty, so they're looking at some things like outside and. And they're really getting the short end right now at a time when people may be more than ever need to services of their church and their pastor, so we're. We're getting there. probably not as quite as quickly as I'd like. We are starting to make some open or Kobe. Numbers really leveled out that we're really happy about that. And what about Jay BS? Swift the meat processing plant in Greeley. What are you hearing about that up? Not very much they're not, they're not yet at full capacity of I'm hearing they've not had any deaths and knock on wood in a couple of weeks. I don't know to what degree they have employs out sick, but. It was certainly tragic. Losing the workers they did and I hope everybody's. Certainly getting better and have not heard anything to the contrary. Now back to restaurants, and again we've talked about this to a great extent, because our return to daily life and living space to lot upon our confidence level, so I'm curious as you've been eating out at restaurants. Are you seen? folks coming to restaurants and being comfortable enjoying the opportunity to just get out and dine again. I I absolutely have The restaurants that that I've been to certainly the restaurants who are following the rules doing everything right there, socially distancing their staffs. Geared up with the appropriate PP HE I. Know People personally and I've seen some commentary from others that said. There's just no way we're ready to go out right now and that that's totally fine. It's the person ought to be able to make some personal choices in life, and for those that aren't comfortable going out that's certainly a decision that they or their families should make I my family is comfortable, going out while adhering to. safety guidelines, but they've not been packed. Of course. The law would know rats that the restaurants that I've been to have certainly had decent amount of people and The restaurant tours is really doing a great job complying with. What they've been asked to comply with so very pleased at this point. What about expansion not only patio dining. Using additional space around restaurants if it indeed is available that seems to be a point of some conversation and debate. It does end up. Council fully supports. A business whether they're downtown or another parts of Greeley the opportunity to expand their turning footprint. It's a what easier for them to do. Downtown because the city owns the real estate Some of the restaurants that aren't downtown are going to have to seek permission from whoever owns the property to expand out, but that doesn't fact gives them the opportunity. To seat more, we've been working closely with the downtown restaurant tours to expand their footprint which would involve alcohol service and be able to get more customers. Be Able to make Starts get back on our feet again financially. And there's. An ordinance pending that would allow the areas on the ninth street plazas to be open container areas. Temporary so. Something I think the council doesn't WANNA do year round Norwood, the restaurant tours in the middle of winter want people to be sitting outside, but it is perhaps not an opportunity for the period from about now until Labor.

Cities set up shelters to protect residents from wildfire smoke

"Wildfire. Smoke can travel hundreds of miles beyond the flames and breathing. It is dangerous particularly for people with heart. Conditions or lung. Diseases does asthma. So it's important for vulnerable people. Avoid SMOKY AIR. But sometimes that's easier said than done because smoke particles can seep indoors especially in leaky houses without air conditioning. When fire causes a lot of smoke after a couple of days often indoor air quality is not much better than the outdoor air quality that Sally Mcgee a consultant who works with the British Columbia Center for Disease Control. She says some cities and towns are setting up so called clean air shelters like a REC center or an arena or school or something like that community spaces that are available for people to go to and have some respite from smokey conditions. For example Seattle has announced a plan to equip five buildings including community centers and event spaces with strong air filtration systems as the climate changes intense. Wildfires are growing more common. So gay says it's important to educate people about the health impacts of wildfire smoke and find ways to protect them.

Between President Trump's Border Wall And The Rio Grande Lies A 'No Man's Land'

"President trump is moving ahead with his border wall yesterday. He signaled that he wants to divert three point eight billion dollars from the Pentagon's budget and set it. Aside for border wall construction that is on top of the eleven billion dollars already planned but down on the border of the project is wreaking havoc for landowners in Texas. It's being built right. Through the middle of many properties leaving thousands of acres in a kind of no man's land between the barriers and the Rio Grande and John Burnett reports this overgrown thorn scrub is the Nether world between the United States and Mexico to the north border fence to the south the muddy meandering Rio Grande. This was Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course on the side of the historic fortification. That gave the city. Its name but with the US government. I started building border. Barriers under President George W. Bush. The entire eighteen hole course ended up on the south side of the fence. Golfers didn't like having to drive through a gate and being walled off from the rest of the city. This spit of land suddenly felt unsafe. None of us come over here. You don't feel protected in any part of the land is south of the wall. Who'll yet Garcia is former president of the University of Texas Brownsville which used to operate the skull course but when the golfers stopped coming it went bankrupt today the clubhouse shuttered and the wants manicured Greens have returned to nature. What used to be a very active place very friendly place for students and far golf team and for Winter Texans has become a deserted sad desolate. No Man's land. President trump has pledged to build more than five hundred miles of new border. Wall out west. It runs along the straight land boundary with Mexico but in Texas that line is the curvy Rio Grande and because of flooding concerns. The Wall is often built some distance away as much as a mile north of the river. The defunct Fort Brown Memorial Golf. Course is a cautionary tale landowners fear. The Wall will effectively sever their acreage from the United States leading. It abandoned lawless and unprofitable so far fifty. Five property owners have gone to court to try to block construction to hear their concerns. I headed West on military highway. First stop is the River Bend Resort and golf club where the owners were planning a major expansion worth. Millions of dollars then came the border wall. The thirty foot wall through the middle of the property kills our project completely kills our project. Jeremy Bernard is part of the family that owns river band. Nearly seven hundred Americans and Canadians from the frigid north moved down here during the winter to enjoy. Short sleeves and Margaritas Bernard Parks his golf cart on the Levy. That overlooks the curved streets. Lined with fancy mobile homes and palm trees. This is where the proposed alignment is from Border Patrol. The problem with that is seventy percent of our property is south of the Levy that includes the REC center the pool tennis courts and fifteen of eighteen holes. All of it would be cut off by the wall. The frustrating thing Bernard says is they rarely see unauthorized immigrants and drug smugglers passing through here. His family is negotiating urgently with customs and Border Protection to move the wall slightly north. So it won't slice their property in half and yet Jeremy Bernard's politics haven't changed he remains loyal to President trump. And I've got friends that disagree with me and they say how could you vote for this man? What his wall wants to tear apart your community. The main thing I tell them look the thought that I'm going to agree. One hundred percent with somebody especially a politician is just outrageous. I just have an issue with the blanket.
