"Back in the nineteen sixties. There was a little expression to describe feeling absolutely smitten with a person you barely knew. Mooning over someone crushes give us a rush and we can find ourselves obsessively thinking about them. It's fun to wonder what someone is doing and imagining yourself there with them. But in recent decades technology has given us more and unfettered access which can make it hard to delineate where curiosity ends and downright stocking begins nebulous territory. Indeed though stalking can be brought on by anyone in pursuit of any gender historically women have been demographic most affected as of two thousand eleven. It's estimated that one out of every six women in the United States has been a victim of stocking stalking is clinically defined as explicitly engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes significant emotional distress in such person and serves no legitimate purpose to boil that down. It's one person keeping a pulse on another person at nearly all times with the hope of inciting some reaction that allows for further contact or control. The game for stalkers is cat and mouse equal parts psychological and physical and to play the game. Moves or behaviors are required. Stocking is an umbrella term that encompasses a slew of aggressive actions including but not limited to a stalker repeatedly calling or texting their victim which can be followed by harassment on social media the aggressor may even take to slandering their victim online in order to provoke a response often when this type of indirect contact is ignored. The stocker may make physical attempts to meet their victim. Unwanted notes and gifts can be coupled with a stalker waiting outside of victims place of work or home if the victim avoids this contact. The pursuer typically escalates again this time. Violent actions like breaking into a victim's car or home or vandalizing property may occur stalkers. Want their prey to know that they were there. There's no escape. Finally stalkers often turn to staging emergencies or distressing situations like sudden injuries or sickness. They're hoping that the situation they've created seem so urgent that their victim fearing life or death consequences must respond responding. It's the result stalkers crave. They latch onto their victims in order to be seen and in order to elicit something in return. They gamble that. Their behavior will reopen the lines of communication by acting this way. Stalkers actually hold their victims in a paradox. They want their prey to be both passive and active on the one hand. Stockers objectify their subjects. They have to to suppress any feelings of empathy for their victims and thus pangs of conscience for their own behavior on the other hand though by attempting to elicit a reaction stockers admit that they're victims have the ultimate power in the game. The power to acknowledge this docker or ignore them. The obsession and pursuit though always remains one-sided despite what a stocker may try to convince their victim of according to. Emily spends deals. Stalking HANDBOOK FOR VICTIMS. Stalking originates in the mind of the perpetrator. Not In the behavior or appearance of a victim some stalkers try to muddy this fact in order to excuse their behavior they try to gaslight victims into thinking their own actions have. Egged on the pursuit that they deserved it in the minds of these stalkers. It's the only explanation that makes sense because above all stalkers believe their own needs and beliefs are the most important matter at hand. These people are their own echo chambers when the reverberation of their behavior bounces back. They explain it away with their self serving perspective. These kinds of thoughts don't have one clear origin. Some stalkers perceive that they have been rejected by another individual. This feeling then compels them to seek revenge. Other stockers claim. They're responding to a victim's entitlement while others perhaps most unsettling Lee of all believe their actions are the result of destiny. One particular type of this destiny delusion is ARADO mania which means a false belief that the stalker is actually in a committed consensual relationship with their victim this misconception can stem from deep-rooted narcissism some individuals are simply unable to comprehend that the person they desire doesn't feel the same about them. The nineteen eighty nine murder of actress. Rebecca Schaeffer was a textbook case of unrequited affection that turned deadly though today. Most states classified stocking as a felony or misdemeanor back in nineteen eighty nine. There was no law state or federal outlining clear. Repercussions for the collective behaviors of stocking. It wasn't as openly talked about and thus it wasn't condemned. People thought that maybe celebrities encountered too many excited fans. At least that's what grocery store tabloids said to sell rags but being followed didn't seem like anything other than Mystique yet. The tragic fate that awaited one actress changed everything in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine. Rebecca Schaeffer was enjoying her time in the limelight. She'd risen to fame on the. Cbs Sitcom my sister. Sanam Holding Court. As one of television's sweethearts and Schaffer had even bigger things on the horizon. She was in the running for an upcoming role in Francis. "Just a label. The meets a lifestyle you WANNA call it not see how I live. That's that's cool. I just call it rigorous thorough way of life of me but yes so there's all sorts of things which you just begging to be analyzed the most obvious theory Gary seems to be that silent Jerry's just trying to eat determined to preserve in everyone he sees some sort of concept of innocence so that the reason I wanted to have this conversation with you. Guys was the I read the book again recently having not read it since I was fifteen or something having kind of written it off. I was like oh it's it's not that great people go on about this but it's sort of a cliche of a great book. It's really yeah no now. I think my dad like I remember at the time when I was reading it saying Oh we're reading catcher in the Ri- and he's what do you think of that. I said a deputy get it and he's like rubbish so he didn't he wasn't into it and I thought okay that's fine. That doesn't like L.. Just ignore it and you know he didn't get the fact of a see that I just didn't understand it really and then a few months ago I read it aged nearly fifty father of three with teenage sons of my my eldest son is it's the same age of the Holden character I can see him beginning to struggle with a lot of the same sort of things and obviously it's a totally different book suddenly I I'm understanding all sorts of levels in new levels that have come with with being older and also I'm remembering with shame cringing at lots of the scenes because I can see that I was sort of trying to do a lot of the same things that holden was that having this slightly self pitying at two towards relationships in romance instead of thinking oh I'm nice it's a sort of thing of being sure that you know what's best for someone else and the best way to keep them innocent and to preserve what's nice about them to rail against anyone like trying to control people yeah it's way to form of control I suppose yeah and this isn't what to you but more related an extreme version of Holden caulfield and it's really interesting of St they're murderers that have really loved divinatory spoken to them Yeah Chapman who killed on and then the Reagan Hinckley and then one others one on and he was obsessed with a young actress rejected him and he sent her lots and lots of letters they found afterwards and then he followed onto a set in l._a.. And again and he he found out the Mark Chapman had the book and that's why why he took it. Oh yes Robert John. Bardo was carrying a copy of the book the night he murdered the actress Rebecca Schaeffer so much Rebecca Schaeffer and I'm trying to think what's one of their names. Elliott's is one of them at Rogers said you remember this killing and must murder so maybe two years ago and he recorded long youtube videos and basically he was saying. I'm such a nice guy. I am so handsome. I am so great. I've got this car and yet women continue to give this sex two other men he felt so entitled title but there's this very subtle thing that's in the catcher in the Ri- that obviously hardens in certain men and actually you see a lot in the worst part of the Internet whether the men who very angry with certain women and again it's that assumed rejection and all that had other rejections and why they continue got these horrible men why goals like bad guys and actually they don't really it's one of those myths that guys..

"That time she was the covergirl for Seventeenth March nineteen eighty-seven issue and she went on to star in several more movies but one movie in particular the class struggle of Beverly Hills would soon son one of her biggest fans over or the edge to the point that he travels to Hollywood to not only meet her but to also kill her just as she was preparing for potentially life changing role in the godfather part three that the end knocked on her door to introduce himself his name is Robert Robert John Bardo and Bryce. You have a lottery seats on this Mojo yes I do. They're all in the glove box of my car just crammed in there. Let's contact your stocker to see in. Yes they have the you're so John. Robert Bordeaux is the interesting little booby <hes> and again I think he touched on it so well that like these instances. Don't just happen out of nowhere. There's history behind them. There's obsession that's propelling them through and he is like the classic case of that like these instances that have nothing to do with like the actual Human Rebecca Schaeffer they only have to do with the image in his mind so <hes> Robert though he was the youngest of seven children and he basically did the classic like hop around his dad was in the military and they were you know not a very well to do family family and he basically cleaned not to not believe him but just one of the things that he talks about was that he was abused as well as a child <hes> he was then placed in foster care as a result of the abuse and the fact that their family couldn't take care of seven children and he started threatening to commit suicide so he was placed <hes> in diagnosed with mental illness <hes> MHM which they later re diagnosed as bipolar disorder and this was all before the age of fifteen so there's a lot of do cooking here we sprite this Richer Ramirez case at a lot like he went through a lot of trauma as a child as an infant in soon carried onto his like you know prepubescent pretty years and it's hard because just because you know why something happens doesn't negate the fact that would like you're still responsible. Oh absolutely so it's like this weird thing like he had this really hard life growing up and he had a history of abuse and by the time he was nineteen he was working as like a custodian or janitor. Fast Food restaurant like those are all very difficult things like he had dropped out of school like I'm not trying to say that like why did this happen. The the path is littered with breadcrumbs but that doesn't give you a get out of jail for your card yeah responsible for your actions so <hes> you know he was sort of not well like his community. He actually had been arrested three.

"I don't watch much network at all I end up watching a lot of car shows, and like UFC stuff, and Netflix and stuff like that. But. Rebecca Schaeffer popped in my head. And then I did this dive into her Stocker and the plane crash and all the stuff and then Friday of the same week. So I came out on Monday yapping about it Tuesday, the show aired and then on that coming Friday. We got go ahead. Max, Pat three days later. Sorry. We'll try to figure this one of the most chillingly killing harbor under the stalkers session metoo, Rebecca Schafer's case on Hollywood. And it always will now almost thirty years after her murder tonight. Tonight on twenty twenty. Well, that's pretty random doing a two hour two hours dedicated a Rebecca Schaeffer and her Stocker thirty years. The most of our show. We got a. Scrap this. Oh Wicky leaked pull shit. We got a story. Thirty one years old Rebecca shavers. Our topic who's shot just researching. Easter playing the ponies here. Right. What do you waste? You're sitting on cash weird. I again, look people can explain how things work, and and whatever. But this I don't know. I was not you clean. I saw promo for that. At some point that that's what would assume except for. I don't really work that way. Like, I come in and go I saw commercial for blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I wanna talk about I see commercials all the time. I make notes I note them. I don't come in and go oh got this feeling about this thing. And I didn't wanna focus on Rebecca Schaeffer. I'm interested in young peak. Peace activists that I read down on. But anyway, for no apparent reason other than this true crime stuff like everyone has to go back. All this true. Crime stuff, actually, max patta. If you find some of those old true crime magazines interesting the shift on true crime. It used to be for the older Purves every true crime. They had these true crime magazines, and it'd be like they'd be up like at the seven eleven was always the scared chick and the guy the stiletto had in between the bra cups. You know, it's Like like. a little. Yeah. There's always a sexual element. There's a weird pervy rot. Yeah. You gotta find a newer version. Yeah. This is like not animated are not drawn are not less straighted. But but like like like choosing like real true detective true crimes always hot chick showing a lot of leg duct tape over the mouth and in changing waiting. They're having. No, there's going to be busy the pre rape post rape, or whatever. But it was like gee with this rape gone wrong show on right? She made him go the lower left one. I'll show you like how they all. Were. There you go like all right. Hot chick. Always shown a lot of leg wearing a halter top guy coming at them. Yeah. Fourteen victims for the sex mad gorilla, man. Okay. So the true detective true crime stuff was for the dudes to beat off to now in for the ladies. It'd be off to the moms to be scared to that me wringing. My hog you're gonna wring your hands. It's handling and time, ladies, fellas. No longer. Ringing time is over it is now shifted so all these stories from the past like thirty years ago, like Rebecca Schaeffer like all right. So what's next, but we didn't realize oh the ladies of today. Yeah. The the thirty five year old woman who's into this. Now doesn't know this story from thirty years ago. And we will now bring it all back. It's having you know, it's like, I don't know whatever bell bottoms or whatever. Whatever music or whatever it's having a renaissance. Well, you know, obviously Comecon like giant giant conventions like that, you know, crime con is huge. Really, you should just call it. Con. Thank you. Sorry. Yes. So anyway, here's Rebecca Schaeffer, two hours. Just don't Rebecca shaver not a household name. So it's not always on the tip of our tongue by any stretch of the imagine her name the show. Yeah. Actually, Adam came in last week saying, hey, who's that actress from my sister, Kate it wasn't as my sister. Sam and we had to we had to reverse engineer to find her name..

And I don't think businesses evil. I think no competition makes you evil and not evil. Just makes you do. Lazy greedy stupid things at the the second. You know, they whatever looked it gets you whatever Merican cars were making in the early seventies. That's what it gets you. If you look at the stuff that Cadillacs about cattle, Sicily, high quality think about what they're where they're at now in Ford and everybody I mean think about the product like in. Here's why it's not they didn't have a change of heart. They're like we want to survive Cadillac wants to remain Ford wants to remain Jeep whatever they want to remain in order to do that to not. I mean, the the Japanese car companies German car company, never stopped evolving. They never. Stop moving for the never stopped getting better. I mean, it's a twenty four seven job to keep up with them. Or even even in get a nose ahead of them. Oh, someone wants to pull my balls. Play the great magnet. Thing as well. So. Last week on Tuesday show. I was talking about Rebecca Schaeffer, and I was very interested on the guy who killed her and the stalker, and how he was stalking that activists that are teen year old activist girl, and how it was so weird that at the thirteen girl was internationally known activists and on the tonight show. She died in a plane crash. You know, in that that girl would be forty one today or whatever the hell forty five or whatever it's crazy how the sort of cosmic Difesa roll like just that woman would be affluent than we'd know her name, and she'd be conquering the world that should be forty five years old. But there was a little problem with impel her on a Lear jet and people are ten she never. She never saw her. Right. So now people she never saw her fourteenth birthday. But for her fifteen would go on so right? But so I just kinda got I don't know. Why I wasn't watching ABC. I don't watch much network at all I end up watching a lot of car shows, and like UFC stuff, and Netflix and stuff like that. But. Rebecca Schaeffer.

"Sunday twenty percent chance of showers, the high seventy eight. All right. How are you? What's going on? It is a a wet and rainy day. There's a federal judge has granted a class certification to a group of over ten thousand people get this involved in car accidents who are accusing a Washington state personal injury law firm of illegally acquiring their names and addresses and then sending them law firm advertising material. And so when I heard about this, I wonder is this possibly going on here in Florida as well. So the guy would have that answers attorney Scott the Owens who joins me now under each Stephen show. Good morning, rich. How are you? Good. Very well. So do you think this is happening here too? South florida. Right. So if you know, my general rule is is someone can be breaking the law. They're probably going to be doing it right here. And I've heard people talk to me. Just in the housing that choose. Accident and only a few days later. I get a call from. You know from from a law firm or text Nassar's or Mailer, and they can't imagine how how this these people got hold of their information. But appears that one of the ways to do it is by buying a crash reports from the states in order to solicit and there is a federal law in place driver's privacy Protection Act and just to take a step back. The reason why this laws in place is anti Jesse essentially anti-stalking statute. And remember there was actress Rebecca Schaeffer tragedy murdered by a psycho fan who obtained records by. Questions. I'm from the state. So federal law was put into place to limit the purposes for for why you how you can obtain records through the state and advertisement is not one of those accepted or reasons, and there was a two thousand thirteen supreme court case on pace. On point advertisers. Donald Gibb purpose under GPA, and I strongly suspect that there's a major firms that people see on TV. Are doing Justice. How how do they I mean, you would think first of all that they would know better? But how do they get away with it? Well. You know, just like the robo said, I do, you know, it's it's it's sort of a cost of doing business. They get caught they could good defense to you players. You know eliminate. Recuse and several and you know for for. No sometimes. Amount of money that it was worth it. Taking in me. Know, the five million dollar wrongful death that came out of the crash that they signed up. As a result of using these sort of advertising? So would it be in a situation where the five million dollars outweighs the two hundred thousand dollars in fines at that have to pay? Soon source. Attrition. Yeah. I recently subtly case, I guess robocaller for skip tracing people for medical and within a year of sewing, Mike. They were doing it again because it works. It works to them. We can't affectively bringing in money when they're in compliance with the law. So people take that risk the lawyers who catch some as soon as a cost of doing business, and the, you know, what we need either stronger laws in place with more significant penalties or you know, some sort of a civil criminal court where these people lose their licence for good. But you know. I shouldn't say is the kind of thing that we've talked about before where company X sets up then they get now changed their name to company. Why that that's got shut down a company? A I mean, this is that basically what's going to happen? Even if the stricter laws. Well, it should travel with the individuals. Nachos. So, you know, either these people are going to have to find stories in there too. Act on their behalf. Make it more difficult and. You know, perhaps we need to add, you know, start making examples where a World War caller goes to jail. You know, there's been cases where spammers on time in prison. And those people were in this case attorneys are doing it. And then doing it again. We'll maybe the second time, you're. It's not the first time. You're licensed needs to be suspended. And mood. Second time just taken away altogether. It's just it's really amazing..

Has now been delisted, but they keep the going out how to track it out where she is just to players. They've tracked them all they used to do like it used to be weight is your to do when she was they they knew that she was living in London. Even though that wasn't public for like almost a year because they were finding charter jets that were coming back and forth between locations where she would appear in public. And then figuring out. Oh, this is going to wherever she is. Like like, they're nuts. Like, they know everything about where she's the figure out or addresses. They have like they cross reference photos to show like, oh, this is the backdrop that was used here. Like, they're in these are the fans, they're insane. Right. So that's not normal. Not no. And these are the fans, right? These are the people who wouldn't want to harm her. So if these people who are like wouldn't wanna harm her think about like the level and eight and but yet they're putting all this information out there subpoena would wanna harm work and find it like if she's got a blacklist, it's the really really crazy people because she takes photos with the ones who track her jets like she might not know inherently that. They're doing that. Or whatever, you know, what I mean? But like, I'm sorry. Like, I love you a seal, you know, like if she goes, she has a watch list or blacklist like there's a very good reason for it because they're freaking like also were saying again, not just area Guerande. And that's but Rebecca Schaeffer was murdered because someone was able to get access to her public information like that was like thirty years ago. But, but you know, people kill celebrities like like Ronald Reagan was shot and James Brady was paralyzed. Because dude was obsessed. There's evidence that Chapman was in a stage of. Illness that was untreated and plagued him for most of his life. And with treatment in prison. He did come to terms with murdering an innocent victim who had just hours before the shooting. Given Mark an autograph and even asked Mark if there was anything else he could do for him in this interaction was captured by photographer, and I've included the image that shows the two of them together in the show notes gracious as he was there was no way John Lennon could have known that he was interacting with his future killer despite Chapman's continue belief that John knew something was wrong. But it appears that catcher in the rye was to Mark the impetus for his motives, it was the rationale for his selection of John Lennon as he was convinced that the fame that John had would be transferred to himself once he murdered John. He would escape the obscurity and the alienate of his life and in doing so forever immortalized himself. Well, the sad part is is that the vision was true to degree Mark is famous but not in the way, he imagined. And in jail. He's found like minded people who hold him with some regard. However disturbing the act was unfortunately with marks fame came the media who clamoured for some reason some semblance of a point of blame. And Mark was far too willing to throw JD Salinger into the role of accomplice news outlets of the day salivated at the prospect of drawing the reclusive author out of the shadows. And under the spotlight's of sensationalistic journalism their headlines reading the catcher in the rise of blueprint for society's outcast, take up action against their enemies. Even though Holden Caulfield never acted in such a manner. Yeah. He'd trumped of shooting his enemy in the stomach. But he never carried out the act, which is an extremely vital point in. Any violence attributed to the novel is absolutely misplaced. Even Mark after treatment came to this conclusion as with the rabid media JD Salinger remained silent and secluded. Well, one awful event in history did permanently scarred. This work of art catcher in the rye had the very unfortunate fate of being tied to many violent acts outside of the murder of Jon this book was also a part of the story when John Hancock junior attempted to assassinate. Ronald Reagan further was also a factor in Robert John Bartos, murder of the young and very talented actress, Rebecca Schaeffer, but the troubles with this novel fall in the educational institutions as well the fear of such a novel inspiring troubled teens to question their lives led to many libraries banning it heavily from nineteen sixty one to nineteen eighty to their challenges to the book generally begin with Holden's frequent use of vulgar language with other. Reasons including sexual references lasts for me, undermining of family values and moral codes and courage.
