"In the end, Jose rizal was still a wonderful choice for the first U.S. naval vessel named for someone of Asian descent. Before we talk about the long-lasting impact of Filipinos in the navy and the USS legacy, we wanted to also mention a few more fun facts about Jose rizal. His impact went way beyond writing and politics. He actually discovered three animal species that were named after him. Draco risali, which is a small lizard known as a flying dragon, a pagan risali, which is a very rare kind of beetle with 5 horns and rack of forest risali, which is a peculiar frog species. And there are also at least 5 other species of animals that were discovered in the Philippines and dedicated to his memory, a type of mosquito known as itis risali, a sea snail known as conus rozali, a spider known as hagner razali, a mite known as kalayaan rozali and a beetle known as spatha melis razali. Same in the hardest one for last. Oh gosh, yeah. A Filipino Americans have continued to be an important part of the U.S. Navy, although initially assigned as stewards for decades, many of them ended up in key roles throughout military history. By 1946, the Philippines gained their independence and had worked out an agreement to supply up to 1000 Filipino recruits per year to the U.S. Navy. By 1954, the U.S. government had increased the number to up to 2000 Filipino recruits per year. By 1972, Filipinos were given a qualification test to be eligible for 5 different roles so that they weren't always relegated to stewards. Many are now in leadership positions and have served with distinction. Can we talk about how long that took? Yeah, I know. You're stewards. You know, for, oh my gosh, I mean, 1901. So we're talking 71 years of being relegated to being a steward at first. Yeah. And clearly doing good enough work, right? And being valuable enough for the government to keep upping the quota of how many Filipinos they allowed in the military, which I mean. Until World War II, 1940 something. I don't remember the exact date. It might have been 46. They weren't even allowed to be citizens. And so, you know, they're still joining the U.S. Military, the U.S. Navy in huge numbers. Because they felt that was the right thing to do, and also because they believed in the U.S..
