Is GDP Overstating Economic Activity?

"I'm going to reach. Couple of things here. And then I I need you to tell me what you as a person who studies this stuff. What do you think? The Federal Reserve means. Okay. Sounds good. All right. So at their meeting in December, and we're talking about this again because the meetings came out today from the January meeting them was reason meeting, but back in December the Federal Reserve said this about economic activity in this country. It said economic activity has been rising at a strong Rayton. Okay. Rising at a strong rate and then in their median January. They said economic activity has been rising at a solid rate. Can you help me understand what Jay Powell and the gang at the fed are trying to do here? So that sounds to me like a slight weakening strong is a positive evaluative adjectives that see just that. We've got a positive judgment about what's happening. So if I have a student, and of course, and I say their progression is strong, then it's just I feel positively towards that progression. On the other hand, solid solid. Progression is not necessarily a positive when it could be something. I'm not particularly happy about. But at least minimally it's consistent. So the two adjectives focus on different components of the of the rise. And you could make the case that the fed maybe not so happy with the way things are going right now, hence, hence, the sod. Let me let me try another one on year again from the December statement, it was talking about interest rate increases this time, and the fed said the committee judges that some further gradual increases in interest rates are going to be necessary that was December. And now this past month in January. They said the committee will be patient as it determines what interest rates ought to be decipher that for me. So that seems like some more subtle weakening in three respects. So the first one is a statement of of the fact that they want some increases, but there's three sort of hedging our weaken. Ding components of the updated version, they're going to be patient as determined what future adjustments to the target range may be appropriate. It's we're sort of not going to come down onto physician of whether or not there's going to be a change, and whether it'll be increase or decrease when you put all of these things together, it's sort of a monster the difference between the sentence. I know how much coffee KYW wants which is a sort of straightforward declaration of what the facts on the ground are versus I wonder whether KAI might want coffee, which is significantly more heads than less informative. So they know what they're doing over there will. Well. Okay. So first of all, I definitely wants coffee, but second of all I mean, they must spend an excruciating amount of time on this word play. And I, and I don't mean that in a pejorative sense. But but clearly they're very intentional about. Literally the words. Yeah. I'm actually a little impressed with the minutes. It seems that they know what they wanna do. And they know how to do it very subtly. Is one that I can say for a lot of us. What? Well, yes. Do you think actually? And this is a little bit sideways, and I don't know how closely you follow the business press. But do you think we spend too much time trying to do the Kremlinology of of what the fed is talking about goodness. Well, what else would we do with our time? I think reading TV's sun, and they've given us a lot to work with

"This was about art a very different field for a there's lots of discussion about Aaron creativity. Cannonade be creative and Daniel from London Rayton with his review, and he said, he left the book. Thanks so much for recommending and he didn't have much criticism from it. Although he thought that Hannah fry was on slightly shaky shaky ground in the final chapter on awed. And even though the conclusion she drew will on an heartfelt. And I think most of his hair agree with Daniel. I I feel like that was maybe the week is in the chapter. It felt like Hannah fry had kind of less experienced that. And I think she lets you literally says, you know, I'm a mathematician. This is kind of out of my fields. But it was very interesting to see some someone who knows so much about our grids mathematics feel unable to comment on them. When they are applied to art. Yes. Definitely. She definitely didn't say the best two loss without chapter part of the problem is as you say looking at creativity as a mathematical problem kind of goes against what we is human beings, define creativity as which is a very human thing. So how can something that is logical and coded be better at creativity than us. But you already see examples algorithms of making playlists on Spotify that putting together movie trailers that doing lots of really creative work or even writing whole songs on Spotify. You probably don't realize listening to them. But if you're ever listening to something that sounds a bit like blinky plunking instrumental. It's probably being written by a piece of software. It's not being written by human hands and not just pinky punky instrumental as you call it, what are these pushy gives is a computer program that was able to write a piece of music that people thought was Bach. They got played a piece by that was actually bought a lesser known piece by him a piece made by the computer that was trained. On his previous work well on all his works. He's dead and a piece by a musical scholar who had written their own version based on his and people feel that the piece written by the scholar was the computer piece much to his disappointment. And the piece written by the computer was invited. By the interesting dynamic is is it's hard to know how to react. Whether you think the computer is tricking you by being superficial. Whereas actually does not come from a real place of meaning you've just stuck together. Random end all is the reaction. Well, maybe human creativity doesn't really add up to much. I think fry mentions a few different pop songs and the pop song vanilla no way, no way. So bad. She says we're lows a pop songs very formula major that there may by industry people that know exactly how to different artists and stuff to make something would do. Well. So actually, it made me think, well, maybe actually we evaluate creativity. That actually is not so deserved in every circumstance, and although creativity fell a little bit away for may what Hannah's of main interest, focus or something. I think it's also raises the big questions of how we work with these systems because I'm I'm sure as the example in the box. It was the scholar who it's back study outrageous for years and worked up their own piece of image imitation. They were probably very offended that they weren't seeing to be the the creative. They were that they weren't and algorithm. Did I say that right? They probably be very offended to think that someone they were in algorithm because I'm sure that took a lot of heartfelt and Deva and passion to make that peace and wallet not have the same consequences things in the judicial system or self driving cars or anything like that. It's more about how we interact with the algorithms and how we as humans, consider them..

"One thousand Fred Hubner with you till eleven forty then we have Notre Dame basketball. It take out Virginia Tech than we will go to the fiesta bowl. L S U N UCF UCF tried to finish another unbeaten season. And after that, it'll be Ohio State in Washington. The rose bowls way. Busy busy day right here at ESPN one thousand cap will be back tomorrow as we gear up for previewing the bears taking on the Philadelphia Eagles bears back in the postseason. The Tribune today Chicago Tribune, yes, I'm the guy. I'm that guy that buys the newspapers, you may not have seen this. If you just looked online they have a little thing on the front page of the sports section. It says everything is not as it seems they go what are you talking about the four teams rewarded with buys the in the NFL playoffs. The saints Rams chiefs and patriots better be careful. This post-season some of the hottest teams in football will be playing on wild card weekend. So let's have a little fun bears fans. Here's a side by side. Look at the actual seatings of the twelve playoff teams compared with how the playoffs. Look based on only the last ten games of the season. Okay. I don't know who came up with this. But I didn't New Year's morning. It's very very interesting. Okay. The way the seatings are now saints thirteen and three number one. The Rams thirteen to three two bears twelve and four three. The Cowboys tenant six four Seahawks tenant six five and the eagles and seven are six. Okay. Now the way that the. One through six would look if you went based on the last ten games, the bears would be number one. They're nine in one over their last ten games. Winning the division the saints eight into the Cowboys seven three the Rams are seven three the Seahawks are seven and three the eagles who come into Soldier Field on Sunday six and four in their last ten games. I've heard people say, well, you know, how the eagles are playing better. Yeah. Six and four of their last ten games. It would change a little bit in the AFC to where the chiefs are number one seed right now twelve and four patriots eleven and five Texans. Eleven and five ravens at ten and six the way they've been playing the colts are nine and one in their last ten games. The chargers Rayton to patriots seven three the Steelers. Well, they were six and four but they're not even playing Texans. Eight and to the chiefs seven three the chiefs can do one thing the chiefs can score real well the chiefs can't play much defense. So it's very very cool to be going into the postseason hot. And that was one of the reasons I wanted the bears to play their guys against Minnesota. I wanted them to go in and get a win because momentum may or may not count. But if the players on your team and coaches on your team think momentum's of big thing, then you want to ride that momentum as long as you. And with Chicago Bears winning games over Minnesota. And the Rams and the Packers and Minnesota again and knock it off. All these teams that is something that you want to be able to take with you into the playoffs. A stat that I thought was interesting that I found this morning. Only four teams have led the NFL outright in scoring defense and takeaways since the nineteen seventy merger playoff results. In two thousand thirteen the Seahawks won the Super Bowl. They lead the NFL in outraged scoring defense and takeaways in two thousand the ravens they won the Super Bowl and in nineteen eighty five the bears won the Super Bowl leading the NFL in scoring defense and takeaways and this year the bears led the NFL in scoring defense and takeaways again, I'm not saying I'm just saying only four teams have done. This led the NFL and scoring defense and takeaways says the merger or they've gone on to win the Super Bowl. And there are people that think the bears this bears team can actually win the Super Bowl. There are numerous people that think that's a possibility. One of the things that the bears are very very happy. With is obviously either defensive side of the ball because you got a guy like akiem Hicks who was good last year. The addition of Khalil Mack this year and akiem Hicks. You step in his game up making the Pro Bowl heat said he talked after the. Game the other day on the team answering any adversity questions. There might have been actually negative today. And you.

"There's so many ways you can listen mixture. Listen mixture, Rayton subscribing, commeting, doing all of that fun stuff so we can continue to bring you this podcast. We're talking about the defense before we broke. We wanted to talk a little bit more. I wanted to move it over to the linebackers and the secondary. It is just phenomenal that the level of late late and Vander Jalen Smith playing at right now. If you would've told me. Six months ago that in week six Jalen Smith late Vander would be your to starting linebackers in nickel, and they'd be playing a huge chunk of snaps outta vomited and not been very happy, but they're, they're playing phenomenal in given the expectations put on both of those guys given the injury history, given what we knew coming into this year. It's crazy how those guys are playing. We're gonna get to the secondary, a second one of these shoot it over to Kohl ask him what he thinks of these linebackers in what's going to happen when Sean Lee comes back. I mean, obviously Sean Lee has been here for years. It's hard to see them not giving him his job back, but how do you take one of those guys off the field? Or do you just play more base defense? What do you think happens when Sean Lee gets back? Yeah, that's the million dollar question isn't it l. v. e. and Jalen Smith have been playing really, really great in spam. Really encouraging to see how each. Each of them have stepped up in Wease ups, and we are in a years past defensive fall apart when it leave because of injury. But this year those two are holding it up pretty fine. I mean, they're not perfect. They're gonna make some mistakes bugging for the most part are playing great. And I like to see how fast they play. They play quick. They run to the bowl mean Jalen he's he's pretty impressive. He he forced out foam will if I'm not mistaken running all over the field, he's not playing hesitant like like data year season ago. I mean, he, I don't know if we'll ever get back to where he could have been. But I mean he spying coffee and that's really encouraging, see vanish. I think he's led the team intact was for the past three or four games if I'm not mistaken. I mean, he's always ain't on attack. Would it seems like in he's he's as playing with confidence. He's playing like he, he wants to prove people wrong. He, he, I'm sure he, he realizes that he wasn't a popular pig, but I mean, he's proven a lot of people wrong east, prevent you in Eireann me everybody. Now everybody was. I on. Let me he's. He's playing really well that pick in kind of what's just blown. My mind is that when coming in, you felt really good about its coverage ability and everything else you're like, oh man, like he's really fast silent silent. He's great, but he's almost like he's almost played better filling gaps, taking on blockers coming through the backfield and then he's, he's giving up some things in coverage that it's kind of like the opposite end he's played. Well, he's played. He's played about as you can about as good as you can play for rookie linebacker that his still really new to eleven man football. Dalton, a wins. You talk about a secondary. This is a group that I still don't think is gaining the respect they deserve. I think Anthony Brown, who's a guy that were almost looking over now, a guy that we had all kind of clamored that may be needed to be benched at some point in his career, possibly even released in someone of his career, how good he's playing, how good your Louis filled in for joke job a woozy after a lot of people thought that he should be traded inactive. And then Byron Jones is playing like a top three or four corner in the NFL even though he has zero ball skills as coverage. Skills are incredible. What's your thoughts on the secondary? I mean, it's just it's crazy. They're gonna get even better when woozy does come back fully healthy. Yes. Sorry, I'm I've been watching that Jalen hit on a loop for the past like five minutes and didn't hear a word. You said? No, I'm kidding. Mannies out some pop in his pads, but I wanted to quickly talk about latent Vandereycken coverage just real quick..

"Well, like, I said, you know, coach McDermott talks a lot about complementary football staying on the field on third down. It's an offense and ruined. The time of -sition limiting the turnovers and on defense forcing three now. It's forcing turnovers and in those games we've won the turnover margin quite a bit. So that's why we're I come in. And you know, making good decisions not putting the ball into their hands. And our defense comes out. We got some fantastic players on defense, and they showed up tonight and. I didn't expect anything less than them. Situation where you have to learn. Especially. Is it a little bit off for you? I care about letters came about the w I don't care how ugly the stats look if we're out on top. That's all I care about you know, guys at throw for four hundred and six touchdowns but ended up losing the game still loss at the end of the day. So I'm just trying to every possible in my power to help his team moved the football. Stay on the field on third downs and me put points on the board. Well, I mean, obviously the first few weeks. Getting shady going. You know, wasn't all there tonight. I think we put it together. Our guys just had a mindset that they were gonna go out there and do their job. And that's what we did without executed to five and three three. They just ran they trusted what they saw. They made plays plays needed to be made. And that's all you can ask for your from your big backs. Awesome. How Garrick would every time? I see him. Just I I never really was around in the locker room. But from what I've been told by everybody who's just one of the greatest guys I've ever met and from the comeback and watch our game. And it's kind of hanging out. You know, it's it's awesome. Oh, for sure for sure. I really haven't seen all the reports or not really sure what's going on. But I'm welcome to Jenny help. You know, I'm not gonna turn help away for sure.
