"If someone challenges me, look out. Wednesday afternoons called. I read a profile of you in the LA times. You thought about grand larceny, you thought about slapstick pants work, but your original career goal was sports casting, Orange County cable access was as far as it went. Can you take us to that time? Who did you want to be? Like, were you like lalas? I want to be let us. There's a lot of American sportscasters that I loved Vince Scully for the Dodgers. Chick Hearn for the Lakers, bob Miller, for the LA kings, hockey, right when I was kind of coming out of high school going to college was the infancy of ESPN. So I thought, oh, those guys get to be silly. They get to make funny little quips. They get to talk about sports all the same time. I'm like, I'm going to be one of those guys. What happened? It got drift. It's one of my great failures. The thing is, you have to start somewhere very small, a small market say you and Arizona. Have you been? I'm garyn. Good. If that's the first rung on the line. Well, I'm doing it. And you have to kind of work your way up through these small markets and it's a lot of work. I realized, oh, I'm still inherently lazy. I wanted to be Chevy Chase making fun of the news that actually giving the news. And so that was kind of corresponding with venturing into comedy. And so comedy one out. Which she did. There's a member of groundlings, LA's gray improv company. That's given the world Phil Hartman, Lisa Kudrow, peewee Herman, and you break through onto Saturday Night Live in 1995 my God, it feels like yesterday. But your debut, it was bumpy. The Washington Post critic, Tom shales wrote, Will Ferrell, who is tall, killed he had a place every part the same way was in nearly every sketch Saturday night. He was hideously inescapable. And I want no. I'm going to brutal criticism, asking for a friend. It's so great. You brought up that quote. Tom? Can you come in there? Tom shales, everyone. He's been hitting the whole time. He's very shy. Very shy. He wants to stay off. Okay, that's okay. Go keep lying down. So you made up. You realize it made you stronger. Tom shells is making you stronger. Did you just call them Chelsea? Chelsea. Yeah. Yeah, he's got a lovable nickname now. I thought, well, this is good news and bad news. The bad news is this guy hates me. But he's mentioning me, one of the few cast members he's mentioning by name. My full name. So I just kind of use it as a classic sports bulletin board material, a little Ted Lasso, if you will, where I thought, hey, if this guy hates me, just wait after he sees me for an entire season. He's going to want to punch a hole in the TV. And I thought, well, I can either crumple and sweaty blob of nothingness and go home. Or I can lean in and be even more obnoxious. Classic Chelsea. Buttons. There was a piece in grantland that once said mocking and celebrating the incredible shrinking white guy has always been central to feral's persona, so many of the characters are suburban white males. Well, that's America becomes more chaotic, polarized, politicized. Has your sense of it? Your perception of it and the humor inside of it changed. I think we're always holding a mirror up to what society is doing. It's kind of our job. There is always room for that kind of reflection and self criticism. It's kind of what I find really funny. I mean, humor did win out, but I want to go and telescope through your football career. You played as a kid for the mighty condors, I believe. Irvine condors. Yes. I can't do as assemble. They don't exist anymore. Why did you go with LAFC and not? You could have come back with their Irvine condors. You could have won the road bike. You started off in gold before you became a devastating midfield creator. Give us a sense of the kind of athletic thunder third grade feral unleashed on the football field. What kind of a play away? A very conscientious midfielder would come back and help on defense and then push the ball forward. You know, running 6, 7 miles a game. Federal three lungs, you wrote an essay in the fourth grade, say your life dream was to become a professional footballer and the comedian in the off season. Essentially, Bobby femino, before the verbal famine. Your childhood dream. It was to play for the Fort Lauderdale strikers, right? Yeah, I did. I wrote that in the fourth grade. And I don't know why I picked Fort Lauderdale. George Best, ray Hudson. What poetry in motion may have ensued? Those early embers of football fandom have never left you well. You are a massive Premier League fan. You've been to games and Old Trafford and field, Stamford Bridge. Can you put into words what you? To me, the ultimate American sports fan, a door about Premier League football. Well, before I answer this question, I've been keeping a secret from you. I have a surprise. Shit, no, Chelsea's passed out. But I just want to reveal what I've been wearing this whole time. What? Oh my God. Tweet the tweet home kit. The tweed HomeKit. This is amazing. I'd heard you, actually got the crest tattoo above your nipple. I don't know if that is that an open myth or is that true? I had it removed. I had it, yes. I had a tattoo. My wife said you got to get that laser off..

"I gotta think that the memories of the people that you interviewed were both nostalgically gauzy and positive but perhaps also laden with some wistfulness two. I'm guessing right teams going belly up and and that kind of stuff. I curious to sort of the demeanor of the the first person interviews that you did with people who were there or remember elements being there. Would you say it was mostly though happily style or where. There's some real sort of negative pieces to to to those memories honestly What i found amazing about this was Almost everyone i talked to whether it was ray hudson or rodney marsh or clive toy or or Al miller everyone says it was the best time of their lives and that was just a common a common theme throughout the movie. Yeah difficult there were. There were hard times Very difficult times. The league almost went under completely. And the early early seventies late sixties early seventies And it was challenging. But ev everyone interview but said it was. It was the best time of my life the most exciting time in. Us soccer history. The golden era of soccer Those pele years beckenbauer and carlos barredo. I mean just. Yeah so i honestly can't cannot say there was any negative negative Energy at all with these interviews. Why do you think that is because of their. Because of their relative age at the time because they were so unknown they knew what they were coming. Nominee wasn't nearly as exciting as this completely on your a tory row. You know i think so. Yeah i think so. And and they were so appreciated here as well The fans loves them It there was a care even though they were serious about what they were doing there. Was this kind of care free Fly by the seat of your pants demeanor demeanor about the league. It was new. It was exciting They enjoyed themselves on and off the field. So i think there there was a lot of things but they love being in america for these four especially with the foreign guys for that for the americans young americans that i talked to or not young now but were the time Playing with and against these world stars. I mean they. They couldn't have imagined that in their lifetime so it yes it was New on so many levels for for everyone very exciting as as you put this documentary together. I'm i'm sure you're aware of the Once in a lifetime documentary about the cosmos beckenham. Six right. how do you using pele right as sort of a line of demarcation which which is natural and and makes a ton of sense how do you prevent yourself from. Making the cosmo's which for better for worse were gigantic part of the story. How do you. How do you steer away from sort of paralleling that kind of story and door yet keeping them sort of in the mix as well without sort of going too far right because argue arguably illeg league was much more than just the cosmo's but a lot of the i don't know i think a lot of the discussion and the the The the memories and whatever media there is out there around. This tends to always center around this glamour club as kind of like all and be all and it certainly wasn't that right and i think there's been some things having talked to some of the the the players that were around that time that played for the cosmo's against the cosmos. I think there were some things that were slightly leagues agitated as well You know this this notion that they were always out you know partying all the time. It's studio fifty four. Did they go to studio fifty four. Absolutely but they weren't. It wasn't something they were doing like all the time right. It's studio fifty. Four things like that but Yeah i wasn't doing every game. Henry kissinger wasn't always in the stands at exactly exactly it. Would it was something They were with atlantic records and it was. It was for pr purposes. But it wasn't all the time you know by any stretch of imagination So that that was interesting to to to hear that I interview werner roth and we talked about that quite a bit as well but i will say that The yeah the cosmo's were the team. I mean there's no question about it. They would be team and they were at certain points especially Sort of the second part of this film. They were an anchor. They they were an important part of the story. They anchored the story and then You know you you go up. And you talk to other other players and coaches at the time and and their experiences And but at the at the end of the day it it kind of comes back to the cosmos right So i i don't want to give too much away i feel like i'm kind of I'm not. I'm saying a lot without saying that i. I don't want to give too much away. How would you. How would you again through your lens. Literally and figuratively. How how would you describe it. Maybe maybe memories from your from your from your father's well how would you characterize the quality of play relative to where a lot of these quote unquote foreign players. Were coming from. Because there's a lot debate as to whether it was just a you know. Retirement league or people extra paycheck and that kind of stuff. But you know. We're talking about frankly. Some of the best players in the world regardless of where they were in their careers granted. The fields were not necessarily the best for playing soccer but the quality of play. I mean you know. We're talking about.

And i think there's a difference there. It's slight but i think it's a profound. You also said belong before you believe which is actually on steve's calculator and in chapter eight exactly the pattern like we're kind of flipping this whole conversation over about what how to do ministry from the twentieth century into the twenty-first it's a shift that goes from counting nickels noses to a framework steve outline ten. "How do we make bill aware of positive way. How do we you know. Make a connection introduction to people. How do we form a relationship. Those become Actions those become skills that twenty-first-century churches need to be adept at and those are predictive of what's going to happen in the future. The more of all of that you have the more people are going to decide to follow. Jesus the more people are going to become a committed disciple makers themselves and so you end in the end more people that would attend and even even support the ministry which i love but actually things that leaders can go do. We've got a leader on this call with us. The that's been doing that as a church. I think i think the metrics you just outlined for any and all ministry indian everywhere But i wanna get to ray here but before we do those of you. That are just logging on. I think again i think it's groundbreaking work It is nextwave. doc community slash. Refresh the metrics. A couple dashes in there. You'll see the link. There's also a tool steve you row. That actually takes not. These aren't just Wishful thinking. I wonder how many you have actually done. Some work in research to figure out. How many spiritual conversations take before people will belong in how many relationships you need to have until you get into those relations so we have an online calculator that can determine. Hey if you have this many more conversations you'll end up with this many more friendships and you begin to grow to begin to engage more. So that link is next documentary slash tools. But tell you what nobody i know. and raising a close friend of mine but seriously nobody i know has navigated this conversation. Better in the midst of a global pandemic. I wanted to open up right at the top with some of the changes that you saw coming. Now we're all i think now experiencing think. Kobe shoved us into that even wrote about that. But go ahead what. What are the metrics. What should we be counting today in the twenty first century. Yeah well. I think to help us understand the twenty first century metrics. We need to go back to the twentieth century. Metrics that have really been the dominant Factor in terms of churches. I understanding how they're doing missionary Everybody smiliar with maybe the the term noses nichols in the book. I'm saying we need to move. From bodies in the pews disciples in the marketplace in terms of metrics of the bodies in the pews was all about how many people are showing up on sunday morning. And how much money putting the offering..

"I love all of that. But one of the things that i love about it in a very difficult and tension soaked twenty twenty one of division. I love that that is one of these safe spaces where someone like. Ray hudson can shout the mexican and it's totally cool. It's got nothing behind it. Other than glory and hedge election and allowed. It's not a wall. It's not we we need to separate from you. It's not you're not the author who's coming into attack doesn't affect us. It's just the mexican and we can all enjoy mexico. Yeah there's a lot of description also like character. Traits are often assigned to nationality as well so like that argentinian intensity and normally like in another context. That's you know. Well you're stereotyping. Whenever but a lot of argentinian players. Come out with that fire putting a hard challenge in and so you know i bring hudson us. He'd see his geniune eyes were bulging. I was like wow okay. Seven years from now at cancel rahab broke radio point. I don't know if we don't have that clip. But he basically there was a shot in the corner and he's like the goalie pushed it to the cross ball with his eyes and he chuckled in the middle of the call. He had some guy on his back. A turtle early on in the game did he. Yeah he did. He did defender on his backside and he said he's on his backside. Like roy. put it on the poll. Please at lebatardshow did the keeper pushing past the crossbar with his is what happened was we got into a little argument. And i'm always like kind of weird. I don't want to miss identify things. And so i said a shot went onto the crossbar and but didn't mention the goalkeeper making a save and so ray hudson goes i think he a save. I'm like oh man that i missed that. And so we see the replays extension arms out and he goes and you can see. The goalkeeper pushes the ball out to the ball with his. I got admires that wonderful pivot into. I'm not totally wrong. I'm gonna change what i said..

"We are going to test some stuff in the coming months and you have seen some of it where we end up appearing live out of nowhere on youtube. Were just testing stuff. And we're going to go live today again at nine. Am some of. You may be hearing that after that. But we're going to be trying to do that on mondays. Winning him because we're testing stuff where we're just going live on mondays and doing the show big zooey and our one into that way yes We've generally found that. Most people respond to the live shows on monday. That's been our most popular show but we still ask you. Check out our laboratory in france youtube channel because we put what is equivalent to the full show on youtube on tuesdays and thursdays as well so full videos of the shows are living so always checking out our youtube channel laboratory in france. It's been nice stugotz. I don't know how much you saw this weekend. But wittingham had his debut. The television voice and the miami soccer team gave him. It looked as competent as it has all season because they started the scored. A bunch have not looked like a competent soccer team. Any opposite ray. Hudson and our audience really rallied around wittingham in a way. That is always moving around here. When you support our stuff that way watching a soccer game you wouldn't otherwise be interested in just because he was doing it. How did it go. Chris where you nervous or was it okay. So actually my only thoughts on the dolphins game was to be mad at them for bumping me off of local television because that game was supposed to be on my thirty three but the dolphins game on cbs and bumping the cbs programming. Onto my thirty three so it wasn't on local television however it did. We run the next day to answer your question. I was not nervous until thirty minutes before kickoff anytime anyone came up to. You say you excited you exciting. Feel good. I swatted all the way. I tried to like almost be cliche. Nfl quarterback like now just an ex game just another game and thirty minutes before kickoff from sat next every hudson. I'm going holy shit. Little game jitters yeah. I'm telling you dan that a good open goes a long way and i. I did well on the open. I was like you know i had to transition from you. Know a sponsor coming out of the break into setting up the game player player to watch highlights on the last game crush the highlights and then settled and i was good to go for the for the remainder of the game. He so right about the open. A good open paves the way it really does. It sets the scene and get you confident. I'm talking like i've done play by play before. Never tried out as an audition for the miami heat. One time thought you killed worst experience. Donald laughs still about how all the heat people say. It's the worst thing they've ever seen. I did call final four. I mean lacrosse women's lacrosse. I was chris. I was nervous about a half hour before the game. But you're supposed to feel like that it makes you feel a lot. That's what you're saying. Well if you weren't nervous i'd be concerned. There are some differences though your delusion that you mask in confidence is one of the great marvels to one of the differences between you being nervous and him being nervous is. He's the guy who's always prepared for the test in high school. You're the guy who never prepared for the test in high school. And so you should be nervous because people need to understand something about you and winning hymns always prepared. You don't want to be too prepared though. But this is the thing though stu gods you just did this okay i saw you watch you work for ninety seconds at the highest rung of sports media entertainment and you were lining this up. You were getting your shoulders ready and then you just wanted to get in there and winning him was talking and he's talking about his debut in a went forty-five seconds longer than you were wanting it to go and then you just get in there with pregame jeters and then you go. How about that and then you take a vigorous sip of water because you were so great at your job right about it now. I did watch the. I didn't watch all of it. But i watched you yesterday. Chris because i was frantically trying to find your soccer game on saturday night. It wasn't there and i and there was a whole bunch of soccer games in spanish surrounding it and i was taping all of them thinking that you were on it. My wife like what is going on the same thing. I thought whittingham. I thought a couple of days. Before that. I was looking for you on a miami game and i'm like and somebody was talking for a long time wasn't you and i'm like wait a minute honey. You'll you'll hear it in a second and we're just waiting for your voice to come on and my wife eventually just walks away shaking her head and our watching soccer to now now. Soccer is something that's going to make. Its way into the house. Because i never appeared on that show welcome to our lives soccer fans way looking for one streaming services on another channel and you got like i'm subscribed to six different streaming service services just so i can watch soccer so you got a little glimpse into that. I'm sorry stu got so you watch what we probably have league. Mackie's was on your dvr or something like that. I have no idea whatever it is. I taped it. I tape like four games around channel thirty three. None of them were you. I watch it. The next day was on at three o'clock yesterday. Right was yes we got. We got tape delayed us because of the sound of your favorite gold call. Do you have that. They're stugatz is not heard it. I thought it was slightly self involved to roll on my own. But we'll we'll we'll have that for you but since i. Oh wow okay. You didn't want you wanted to be hashed can do it right here. In my pocket around on dates sent the for asking was hoping.

"If i played in the little league world series i would bat three hundred really. You think so. You sent me to batting cage. That's three hundred. I thought i didn't wanna say like you know something ridiculous. Go go ridiculous. Go high in these pitches. Do we know like they throw in like the mid sixty some of them. I think fifties and sixties which is like the equivalent of like high eighties low nineties from the district. Only pitching four eight. Yeah because it's such a. It's such a shorter distance than a major league. It's that's why they do the equivalent they show you like. He's throwing this heart. It's the equivalent of ninety eight or something can i share a myopic olympic. Gripe that i have no now that the olympics have ended. But we're on the topic of baseball. So i was watching the gold medal game and it was driving me crazy because it's being broadcast in america. It's being it's an american broadcast team. It's clearly like. I don't know where it's being produced but pitch feeds coming out and kilometers per hour and i had no idea what the hell was going on. I didn't know how fast pitches were. I didn't know what was happening. Why couldn't we have done. The good ole mbh because the metric system right. Yeah but but it's being broadcast here. It's being done by american broadcasters. Why can't they just do the graphics with miles per hour. You myopic american though. I know i said it on the front end but but yeah that Not the ioc was hanan. The footage on that was named the klein. Laura's is calling the commodity. Nope learn kilometers. That's why they're in your car right now. If you go out to your car there's kilometers. Learn them yet but i was watching. You might carve as watch. My car could speed up to get the kilometers per hour. The pitch was thrown at the fast. I was driving. You guys ever accidentally changed your car thing for miles per hour to kilometers per hour and then you think you're driving miles per hour but it's in communist per hour so it feels like you're going really really fast but you're actually going pretty slow then. You're afraid you're speeding. And then you're like. I might crazy and then you realize you accidentally change the setting on your speedometer measuring kilometers per hour. That goes into that. Don't jessica my car. Sales stick stick. Yeah they both say at the same time. It's just like dial and another under it owes guam. What kind of you know rocket. are you driving. It's like an old car to drive a saab. don't you know saying. I'll be judged no matter what badges saying you feel like you have a saab. I do not have a saab but there's nothing wrong with a saab. No nothing at all. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the song. Just saying you drive assab not gonna lie. You saying you're going to get made fun of. I kinda wanna know you drive now. Audi volvo driving the ball guys having guest yet And you're never going to. I don't think you've ever even heard of saturn. So it's not going to be that alpha all right what he got it off. Okay come on mystery crate way. Congratulations oh thank you. Chris i mean jeez. Look at this guy. I mean we are your impressive. We're very proud of you woody. I'm impressive say that i've just. I'm doing a television broadcast. I look at you downplaying. It ray. Hudson how nervous. That's just one bit. That's the fun bit. i'm actually like i. I'm doing like a bit of film. Study almost to really figure out how to accommodate myself around. Ray hudson's stylings draped. Because like i've got to be done with my gold call quickly before it comes to the magisterial. I've got to be ready. So i'm i'm i'm preparing and then you gotta go in there and do like an also move with rabi like ray glad to be doing this. We listen we're going to have to take a little step back okay. But taking some belts they outright. I think this is what we're going to have to do here with this broadcast. And just remember on the main guy here. You're just filler. And see how that goes. Turn it down a notch me On on the somalis and the toronto the tarantulas down pants. Just a couple of notes here. Ray i've learned some things about your study about your broadcasting style and i have some notes chris. I want to analogize very quickly. I just want to apologize. Your skin looks great. Thank you i appreciate. That looks great listen. I don't think i'm ever getting to great. I was not blessing the gene pool in this area. So you know what i'll i'll settle for. Mediocre genes are crazy right. genes are wild thing biology. Yeah lot of wash so people wear jeans down here. Because it's so hot i agree. That's why i never wear your acid wash. She got the white cheese. I mean there's a lot of way too high for jeans seat at the. My face is way too hot for jeans roy. Perfect is dental. Doesn't breathe well. No what the other day. When i walked into the ocean those genes were the rest of the day terribly uncomfortable. You walked into the ocean. And in denham yeah had denim shorts on dorothy big mistake. Dangerous game i doing that again woody. We're so proud of you. And i'm sorry that dan was so rude to you this week but it really rolled off your back into that. I'm very impressed. Well you know. It's something that i've dealt with my whole life. I think it'll be dealing with in my entire life. If you're not going to the things that are wrong with you then. You're going to suffer a lot so around here you just choice. Better accepted right. Well that's the thing is if i. I think one of the mistakes that often gets made on the show is when people like reveal that their vulnerabilities are actually vulnerabilities. Because then that scab only gets picked further so I kind of say that. This doesn't really bother me then. Maybe you'll forget about what i try with the fat stuff. It's no hiding now though audi we're not bothered you though about your i feel like the.

"To were like this is. This is a steel for venture. This guy should have been at the euros with scotland and he you know should have been going to like porto or Benfica he was considered the best player in portugal. Outside of the big three teams Last year we'll see. How does he change the caps. I mean he's a number ten going around and play one time once he's like he is one of the most glaring holes in the entire league and he should fit right in there and i like a lot of the young players caps have been able to pick up the past couple of transfer windows. Whether it's david saito michael decent milk coming through the the academy kyle dre like this team has the potential to be much better than they have been but now it's very much unmarked o. Santos to put them out in the the right formation and with a coke your tactical ideology and get them to play consistently week after week after week. And we're in your three of the mark the santos era and and he has yet to do it. So it's a huge chest for the coach. The second half of the season Speaking of huge tests for managers in last inner miami after we buried them pretty sure. I called them the worst expansion project in the history of expansion. Four game unbeaten. Run to to nashville as see. They got the playoff win. They were not going to get this win. Look it's better. yeah we can. We go with ray hudson to on this one. Because i was out he was a. I think everybody's been feeling for ray just with the messy news and all that but like the way he gave this game winner was like pure art. He pulled out all the strings. I think the was indiana vassilev right yet. And then he went. I think he called him. Indiana jones like swinging swinging down on the vine like it was it was art. It was beautiful. That's my analysis. Answer after i mean. I'm wondering to be to be fair. It was it was beautiful. It was a very aesthetically pleasing diving header where he sort of like he completely full Defense to carve out that little piece of space people to fantastic ball they. This is another phil. "Thing about them. Those i have a plan named brian. That's who. I share a book by the way i enjoyed that but yet they're a fantastic team and they play. These plays seem to just know how with each other the yawned. It's something that's bit going dude. I'm gonna put myself from you guys just decided you know green grooming. I want my diamonds. And there's a bloody guy that's just decided to tree down right. My dad banging on the window complaining about it but now this italian team they know how to play with each other. They play passes into zero space from four yards and they know exactly. Who's going to go and run and get it and back yields or the other guy and put it onto the near the other who's going to knock it up through flick. They have you know telepathy with each other. Set a really exciting event and i want to say that. Oh my goodness this This event has only reinforced. What we're going to be talking about today. There's there's like this. Huge watershed moment for the church. Where discipleship is getting back in the place. It probably should have. But let's let me talk really quick. About what the shift is about. So i'm going to share my screen here That just shows you some diagrams that are actually in the book nextwave That will just talk to really quick. Yeah there you go. Yeah and so. This is the first. This is the first diagram that that helps to illustrate the current below or the twentieth century view view of disciple making our discipleship. Basically people have always seen as. Okay you start making disciples once. Somebody's been say. Then you get into a discipleship program and you have things like one. Oh one to a one. Three one this the 'lustration of that and we're very intentional about that. We say you know. People need to learn what christians believe and people need to learn what their gifts are and people need to be empowered for ministry. And that's all true. And that is this. This is definitely part of the process of making disciples but one of the challenges that creates if. You're starting a brand new church and a in a community and you say okay we gotta make disciples..
