"And and summers off of course and anna month off between christmas and easter. And all of this kind of crap you know. what do you do there. And there are signs that you know the You know the major teachers unions are pushing really really hard to to maintain the site. They were not opening up. You know until everything is safe and nothing will ever be safe enough for teachers to return so you have that question where there is a parallel universe where masking mandates are absolutely gonna stop things from happening whereas you have most of the people flouting mask ordinances as they exist and this brings me to build. James matt welsh when he talks about. Pete rose and ray fosse colliding in the one thousand. Nine hundred seventy all-star star game You know the the fact of the matter is it's illegal to block the plate as a catcher but it was widely practice and that bill. James says you know you can't have a good society where people are openly flouting laws at leads all sorts of problems and you can actually see that informing his later work on various kinds of social issues from baseball but it is true. It's not good to have a society where people are openly. Flouting island that up by rains up for the last part of that answer. Except for when. Nick said the word fosse and my brain was like bob buzzing and i woke up and saw jazz and started snapping napping and then right back this way. You know what. Bob fosse would've would've tagged by vision. Just wonder dancing gifts. I catherine t. And by the way i if i may just say i'm bob willis when i think about fosse of course i think of roy scheider in the same way when i think of patent i think of george scott and when i see pictures of bob aussie unlike terrorism. "That's where baseball is going, and that's where baseball needs to go, and it's time to stop comparing its popularity to football, That's that's their stuff to worry about. If you're a fan, What do you care? You know I was Amber and I were having this conversation this morning. Golf is my favorite sport. When I'm watching golf over the weekend. I'm not sitting there thinking to myself. I wonder if this will be good for the rating. Well, I wonder if this is in the big picture, good or bad for this world like I never have that conversation with anybody. I'm just watching an event that I like and that's how we feel about baseball here. And so that's what we're gonna do, and we'll get into it. Now. The commissioner Rob Manfred did have some interesting things. To say and one of them. He addressed this topic that we blew up into a very big deal yesterday because of your frustration over the players that didn't show up, and this is what he said quote. We have a basic agreement provisions that with certain narrow exceptions, participation in the All Star game is mandatory. We will post all Star game review with the union How all of the people that didn't come fit within the exception to the rule. We bargained for that and we intend on enforcing it. So I don't know what these narrow exceptions are Do. They include cowardice on the part of the Astros players, as does that fit within that that does it include just a desire to spend more time with family it cannot. It cannot include. I just want to be at my best for the second half. It can't include that I cannot. I don't believe he can force players to play, particularly you cannot force pitchers to pitch. But you can force them to show up absolutely and and and to your point of the other day, it's not too much to ask. I don't quite understand this narrative that so many people believe that you almost have to choose between your player or your picture performing in the All Star game and them also being healthy in the second half, named literally one example of someone season being ruined. Aside from Ray Fosse from playing in the All Star Game in what? Give me Give me an example. Give me the pitcher who blew out his arm in the author game ruined, ruined his career. For those who don't know Ray Fosse is the one who got trucked steamrolled by Pete Rose in the All Star game, something like 50 years ago. That's what I love about him about Hambo can drop a 50 year old reference any time that That happened before I was old enough to be paying attention. What year was that? 19 seventies, right? Something like that. The most common piece of feedback I got yesterday on my rant was that I'm way too young to have done that. And that's right. But people don't know you because you're a perfect example of your chronological age. And your emotional age being two totally different things. Yeah, Your chronological age is what I'm 31 eur 31. You were born in what year? 1990? Okay. I think that your emotional age you were born sometime in the mid forties and my dream world. I was born in the mid forties in New York and I grew up a giant fan. And I think you would you, would you? You grew up at a time when men wore hats. That's what I picture you wearing a hat hat like a suit to the ballpark, sweating through it and watching a doubleheader at Ebbets Field. You know, my dad did that too. Throughout his life my father would wear would be dressed to go to games. Really my dad, we would go to, um Nick games and Jet games were primarily the games would go to and even late in the season freezing right. That's a jet game. It's you know, it's 1976 were three and 10 and it's like a December day. Oakland is beating us, 51 to 9 and my dad and I are under a blanket like we literally would have a blanket with us that we bring to these games that we kept in the trunk of the car, But he's in a sport jacket. My father was dressed and Nick Games a suit. Always always. That's just, you know, That's the way it was. Then you would have loved it. Okay, as we continue with the question of the day is about the All Star game and all Star games in general. We will get to that plus news yesterday that suggested to me We have seen the end of one of the greatest careers in sports history. Get to that and more as we roll on your listening to Greenie on ESPN radio..

"Uh, Yankees cheated. Yankees cheated. Yeah, exactly. Thank you. Every bit the cheaters every bit. Every bit. Such a stop. Just stop Andy Pettitte. Well, he he should be a Hall of Famer Well and and the main argument over and over again. Well, Andy Pettitte admitted it. Shep, Is there anything you need to admit now? Because I mean, I want I want to make sure we've got clean conscience here. Is there anything you need to admit There's a lot Was a thief. I was a thief when I was a kid. Well, you know, Jake. I mean, here's here's the other thing. And I, you know, listen. I mean, I'm not trying to pick holes in your argument here, but Just have to understand. He was so a saleable to the media for Tony 20 years. It wasn't a very bonds. It wasn't a Ken Griffey so they think that is bonds, but they were very luth. They were very distant. And Oh, yes, and that should keep you out of the Hall of Fame, right? Why should that keep you out of the hall of Fame? What does that have to do with anything? We don't live in a world where people treat others differently because relationships chicken? No, but it shouldn't matter whether you're in the Hall of Famer. Not okay. Mike. Guess what? Mike Mussina does He belong in the Hall of Fame? I don't know. He's really good guy. I don't care who's a really good guy. I care about the Hall of Fame, Not a whole of very good. That's why I call and by the way, if you cheated the game, you're not in the Hall of Fame was the catcher JK that Pete Rose ran over the All Star game. Was it Ray Ray Fosse? Fuck Ray Fosse. If Pete Rose was stand museum had that jovial type of personality had that positivity radiant all over him on a 21 year career, he would be in the Hall of Fame. Oh, I know. I believe that the No. The baseball outrage media know would would continue to would continue to make excuses for well, We can't have cheaters in the Hall of Fame. You don't think Mariana Rivera was voted unanimous because he was the most beloved pitcher in the history of baseball. I don't know where that comes from. JK marries Mariana Ribera Pitches one inning. Yes, Mariana Ribera Daisy's first ballot, You know that it was a favor. It was a it was an app and and again the fact that he was unanimous and, like Henry Aaron wasn't Ted Williams wasn't I mean, seriously, What's the fact that prickly JK value exactly by this? Because I don't give it And guess what? I don't give a damn Who treats players nicely. I will tell you a story. I'll lay it out there because the story changed over the years. When I came to Atlanta. And being in a prominent sports talk radio role. I became a person that had very vocal opinions as you know. Bobby Cox was already established in the town long before I came here. Bobby Cox couldn't stand me. Couldn't stand me the sight of me Annoyed him. But you know what I kept doing? Kept coming around. I kept chipping away. And to the point where I a couple times, let him Tell me What he thought about my act as it was called at the time and that went away. That he didn't like. Let him have a form. We had a dialogue. And him and I ended up having a beautiful relationship. Very friendly, very cordial, very but I never once told my audience. That my opinion on Bobby Cox changed. My opinion on Bobby Cox was overwhelmingly positive the entire time the entire time he just couldn't stand when I would be critical of his team. Be critical. The shortcomings be critical of him, but I was rarely critical of him. He couldn't stand it because he protected his players. He protected his clubhouse. You protected us. And it all worked out. Never once not once. Did I ever let the audience know, by the way? This. The manager of the team hates me. Because you know what? The manager that the fans don't care. They shouldn't care who the medial Who? The media again. What? What coaches Nice to them, because here's what I'm gonna tell you. From my media, brother and I'm gonna tell you this right now. When athletes are nice to media members. They get free passes. When coaches air Nice to play people, they get free passes. And so many media members. Cozy up like kittens in the lap of a teenage girl. You know, they just like they're like your favorite pet. They just want the affection. The fact that Derek Jeter created a website when he retired from the game. The players Tribune so the players would finally have their voice. No player in the history of sports got more lapdog media coverage than Derek Jeter. I'm surprised that the people who covered Jeter didn't get gift baskets like he reportedly gave out to the overnight guests. They all deserve them. Cause the way they treated him. The lapdog coverage that he got? No, not he was a great player. It's a great player. He's never questioned. It was never challenged Jake. He did that ancillary to the media members, and he made that clear. You know what I mean? That wasn't to replace media. No saying enhance He no, no already covering Senator. No, he said it's time that the players had their side of the story told he's not. He's not right. He's not. You don't believe there's validity and dressed like that. I'm going to tell you this right now. The players Tribune. I will. I will ask anybody who's an executive of Players Tribune and I'll put $1000 on the table. And I'll say how many players wrote the piece that appears with their name on it. And I'll tell you I don't believe 25% of them Religion. Right now. I don't believe 25% of the religion. They are so well written. And so well done. There's a ghost writer involved, which in turn takes the entire idea of the players Tribune out the window. It was the players Tribune. There be grammatical mistakes. There was the players challenge than that, Jake. I bet $1000 on it, Shep 25% of 3/4 of people that write articles and the players. Tribune's. Somebody wrote it for athletes. Somebody wrote it for somebody wrote it for so somebody didn't give a second eye. They wrote it for the No, they said. Here's my story. I'll tell you my story. I'll give you the story. You write it. But it's supposed to be the player.

"She can download stuff, maybe off MLB dot com filling room and I'm sure the Asia their own library to be able to do this. We can take ipads on the dugout bench of action of him, but It would be earlier starts. And maybe a look at everything. This is unbelievable. Yeah, I just I mean, I heard about it, and then I Like when I was watching Dallas cycle. I want to go back and watch his last start. But I don't know when this guy started and he started on the do you remember the 21st night of September? We made a start. So I mean is this fire's getting a handle on this guy? He's very different. Julita is different. Mike Ike a list like 180 degrees from Giolito. There is very different. This guy. He's kind of young Mike fires where it's over the top throws hard. A lot of above the hands fastballs has a wipeout. Slider as well. So we'll see what they give him. I mean, now you're enjoy. This is a game seven. This is your season Somebody's eliminated today. And also you don't play until next week. So you are everybody's available and as far as Mike fires When they made the trade to get him. And if you recall, you know the Angels could have blocked that. Or Seattle's GM could have blocked that. And I was like I got fired That guy. I mean, how would you not know that Billy's gonna go get this guy? So, but they they bypassed him in 18 against the Yankees, and the big thing was Thegame was going to be in the Bronx and I wasn't going to be in Oakland. I think of that game, and it came right down to the end and the wild card game. Where is that going to be? He had faced the same Yankee lineup. Against them in Oakland and done well and I just You know O'Quinn's more of a fly ball bar parking on the day. You know it could jump today it could play small. That was going to be a night game. But in any event when the getting went to the Bronx and that band box in the jet stream, I think they just decided we're not going to do that. And look where they are Now. Liam Hendriks started that game is an opener. Now he's your closure on what you got after 49 pictures yesterday. And then you know last year when they bypassed Informa Naya. You know, that was hard as well. You know, go into a veteran guy, even though it's not the playoff experience. He's a veteran guy against a young guy. I am and I did not pitch well. So now you know you're saving him for Game three have already tried a couple. But this is it. This is in his jazz. Ray Fosse was saying, John, they're gonna lean on him today. He's rested. He's not pitch since the Thursday game last week at Dodger Stadium, so he's got a full week. So he's not throwing quite as hard as I remember. I remember fire's blowing pretty hard. Above the hand. She's nice watch his last start. It's about 90, but he's got the split change off of it down low. He's got a pitch that moves away from right handers. Good lineup, so but today, this is Bob Melvin, This is on you. This is it. This is ah, one game and you play on and to get the Astros and the ultimate You know what a serious that would be. So it'll be really interesting to see Just Obbo..

"Elimination game over the Coliseum today, white socks and a cz like Bobby, You know this song. This is one of Jacob's honorable mention. What is this rusted root? Jack White Sox underway Why we played the song very much. And let's get right into it. Ray Fosse to join us and hopefully the get the win and move on for the first time in a while. Ray joins us, courtesy of the guest line. How are you? Guys, I am wonderful. You know that? Not a nano. Yeah, I have to tell you quick, Pop. How you doing, buddy? What's up Fuss? Is that a White Sox song? Is that a White Sox song I remember years ago. You know what I finished actually before became a free agent I was with Seattle is a funny story. I went to the mound with the pitch with Seattle. It is almost crisis. I can't leave the game because they're going to sing that song here at Comiskey. So it's a white Mickey Holliday. I call Anu in committee. I can't I can't get it all these Naming rights and steps will. Yeah, exciting day and I appreciate being alone with you guys. I don't even know what the new place in Oakland's called What does it ring central? Something right out of the night yesterday, So whatever it is, so what about college? Yeah. One thing I think about you during just you're working with you For all the years 14 years we were together. Is, you know you you are so much of a presence inside the clubhouse and you two go in the mail room with booze and it is the way you broadcast is interacting with the players and the coaching staff and Billie and David. So how are you doing this sheer like today? Did you get out? I don't see your getting out of zoom conference call with Bo Mel. Do you call them? I mean, how do you get the insights of what's going on with the team this year? I've talked to Bob Melvin, and I'll be honest with you, Pop that they gave me this. This thing I put around my neck and volunteer three, which we cannot leave the press box. I mean it. It's unbelievable the restrictions and you know I can appreciate it. I drive out of the We can park on the ramp when the team is home. We can't even park in the lot because again of the restrictions, their quarantine, you know, and you have to understand. I think all people do that Major League baseball and I give them a lot of credit for being able to Play the 60 games and postseason. Obviously, there's a lot of money on the line. And so these players have been in a hotel sequestered kind of quarantine. If you will, and I've seen buses. I see him every day when I leave the Coliseum. And I hope those buses were taken the airport after today's game to the Los Angeles and get ready to take on the Astros, But you know to your to your question. It has been a difficult season and you know, I try and unfortunately, I've been able to get the winter addresses which have cell number, so if there's something, but I'll be honest with me, Papa. I can't go into club. None of us can get the clubhouse and we all like to be out on the field in the clubhouse. It's been a very difficult year in that regard, and you know, there's always questions that come up following the game. Why this? Why? That, you know, you know and had somebody on the back. Can't do it. And then you know, we understand the situation and hopefully this is just a A one year fiasco, and we can get back to some normalcy next year. As you know, in your experience with the that oblong ball. We call it a posy is joining us, of course elimination game over the Coliseum. So so take us back when you were. You were obviously with those great A's team 73 74 with with the AIDS just Going into a game like this and how the guys were feeling and just all those kind of things. What is it like, is a player. Well as a player in an interesting guys where Joe Rudy on a little bit earlier, Chris Townsend does his eight cats and we contacted Joe and I was on with Jo and we were talking about because they had the similar situation that I experienced in 73. They had 72 With the Tigers and five games, which at the time was there was a you won your division named Championship for five games straight to the World Series, so I'll be honest with what I played my first World Series game. It was like, what's the big deal about this? Because getting through the Orioles in five games? I mean, that was that was the pressure because it made it tough, But you know, Jo said, And and I agree with him because I was traded with the Dick Williams. God blesses. I mean, he was just a tremendous manager. First thing, he said. We do two things here. We catch the ball and we pitch that. I've always said you know, as a former catcher and broadcaster and player that if you can pitch and you can catch the ball You're going to win games and you look at the most scoring games and we had him in Oakland. I think that's the biggest thing that really helped having played games throughout the season that were no storing. We had tremendous pitching in 73. We had 3 20 game winners, which I think is the last time that ever happened. At three. Very you get 1 20 game winner in the lake now had 3 20 game winners on one team and 73. I think that's the last time it happened, but I know going into the postseason against the Mets that year. When we got off the plane in Oakland, down three games to two with two to play at the Coliseum. And I say to you because the best could have one game Game six and it's over. But I remember telling somebody we're gonna win. We're coming back home. We have the pitching. We have the defense. You know. Reggie came up big in the World Series, but it was because we had played so many games like that during the season. It really wasn't a big pressure packed situation. And I think in today's world, guys, but the biggest thing of the analytics that you know Ah, talked to Jo about how important steps were at the time in 72. I know in 73 against the Dodgers. I mean with the Mets when I played against them, the scout came in because we hadn't seen the mecca of been down in Florida. We didn't know already play, so you had to depend on the scouts. Well, that's not available today because nobody's allowed on the stand, so they have to watch the television monitor and try to scout Players and teams like that, but it's a different time. But I think because we did have the opportunity play low scoring games with great pitching and defense during the season that once we got post season, it was just like another game. A fostering the early days of the pandemic. I don't know if you saw this MLB network replayed like every a CZ World Series game 72 73 74 even 88..

"Twitter feed during a game's a Specimen elimination game. And then I sent you a text the other day because my son does the same thing completely ignore school and watches the A's from home and he's already texting and he's already pissed about Mike. Fire starting, But look, you gotta start writing today. Can't start, man. I there now 15 0 against lefties and I was looking at the splits, and it's It's very Very different readyto lefty Ray Fosse at 10. 30 is going to join us. Dame Dunning, by the way, is the White Sox pitcher who dominated poor competition but struggling the last couple of starts against the Indians. And the Cubs. So hopefully that continues, so we've got the great Ray Fosse to talk about the game at 10 30. It is the Tim Ryan. I think they call it the bull rush, but he likes he prefers the rip move. He's going to join us from 11 to noon to talk everything about the 40 Niners. We just like to call the Tim Ryan power hour. Then, as you said, a lot of issues around the NFL with the Steelers and the Titans being postponed, he's going to join us. At 12 30. Then we got a late call from Sal pal, your buddy Sal Paolantonio Nof course sound of your shoeshine box. He's awesome, and he could talk all about the ESPN. But he is in Philadelphia. So obviously we'll talk about the Eagles. Sell Powerball ashes in Philadelphia. He's the mayor of He's a man, and as such there, we'll get into obviously eagles with him, and Carson's already has six interceptions with that's going on. So I'll ask him all about those things. So a tremendous guest list to rip off the knob once again today, the one thing I was I was reviewing the sales game was. What did you think of? What do you think of the live mikes? Justin Turner had it. Canada had it and I was thinking what if Canada had to make that catch while he was talking to Dave and Jessica Mendoza now he didn't. It was the inning before, and he was making jokes about it, which I thought was awesome. The next inning. But I'm all for all access for the fans. I think it's very cool, but a playoff game All Star Game one thing playoff game That's well elimination game couldn't lose yesterday. So we I noticed that we're doing this show, so I did not see the can it catch for some reason. Maybe you distracted me That's going to stop today when the started known Tim Ryan comes in 11. You'll get very, very little for May I let him do this will be a change of a Let him do all the talking. That would be great to take on watch baseball, But I did not see the can it catch until I watched the game back. This morning, and it was a terrific play, and it was right before I did see the interaction. We talked about them. Mike and Kanna during the game. And my first I saw you. It was just during a break when I watched it live, and I thought it was just okay. I watched it back this morning. The catch was terrific. But he was even better when he got might. I mean, he was really playful? Hey, talked about the catch. That was a tricky one, and he said, I played it perfectly, and it was funny. Hey, doesn't play left field every day. We played right field the day before. So I thought it was terrific. What was and I think Flam and And Jessica asked all the right questions, and I handled it perfectly to take you inside the game. The batter in the box he was talking about. And I don't see him buggy whip in here and pulling the ball is going to go straight up the middle. He appears to be on the ball, so I'm not gonna play to the poolside. I did want to know about. You know what he pulled out the notes in the cap. Which they used to have in the back pocket or try to hide him a little bit and where to play in the outfield, and I don't know if the Dodgers were the first team to do it, but I remember the Dodgers really doing it with far on there. What 45 years ago. You know what are the landmarks where they actually saying? I actually thought they should go and spray paint on the grass, you know, set up here for Tim Anderson. Where did my goto I have landmarks that I have a GPS track. Just upto left right there. Stop right there. But he was saying, You know, we're athletes and we're smart and we'll move around. I thought it was really interesting, but I was surprised that the manager of the age did not know that he was Mike at all. Which may have been a good thing. Because I'm not sure he would have allowed it. And Bob Melvin is the great communicator. But you're in the middle of Ah Of a huge game. I don't think it would have distracted him. But we'll find out with Ray Fosse thinks about it. I thought it was I thought it was really Ah. It was great. It was a great touch to the game. And there's one thing to do it in the spring training and all Star games Bryce Harper and in flipping his hair out in the outfield and lost our game, Nobody cares. We noticed the Cardinal second Basement. A shortstop got Mike on a Sunday night game, but to do it in elimination game, then you mentioned Justin Turner. It's extra, obviously for the fans. They're trying to win back America after what happened this year with the labor impasse, and all of that. So I enjoyed it. I just, You know, I wonder. What did Billie know about it to David Force know about it if the manager didn't know about it? That's interesting. So just for that. But the one thing you mentioned Derek and now that the Raiders are gone, and they're in Vegas And the Warriors are in playing right now. His his sports obsession is the ace. And I thought J. Fleming. Jessica Mendoza did a greatjob Dave's in Charlotte, North Carolina. I mean, there was one fly ball by Sean Murphy right before and extending and his bomb. That clearly was foul. I mean, I don't think there was much debate. I was surprised to come so long to look it over. Dave had no idea what he's in Charlotte, and he said he had 16 screens in front of him. 16 screens. What? Hey, watch it. So, but how hard would that be to call the game so far away? And there's things going on that you just want to see And if he's got 16 screens, there's probably showing them you know everything. But the one thing Derek and this is just I think it's the The ears of the listener. And Derek loves Flynn. You know, and Derek was young. He would come on the road with us. You saw anchorman with flam years ago and I love's flame. But he said he texted me. Flem launch the age to lose like he's getting out through because flame does Giants and Dave Wass. I want to say critical But he first guest Liam Hendriks got up at 7 30 last night. Yesterday. This score was five. Nothing. So it was like, Wow, you're bringing him in. But it was a part of the order where you wanted to get the big outs, but he didn't pitch well. You want up throwing 49 Deke, you know, struggled a little bit, so that was so deep ball was was rocketed to say at the end, Yeah, for the last out, but it was right at the second baseman..

"It is 14 home run last night. He's in the top five in the American League in home runs and R B eyes, But he's batting less than 200. So I'm not sure quite what to make of that goingto paradoxical, But like I said, I think that in lost Ella Has really helped because he moved the ball around is kind of like a jet. Valerie's type of guy has a great approaching a Jed was a switch hitter. It Tommy about its left, but you can do things with him. You know, he puts the ball in place, so But like I said, I think that there there may still be the opportunity for this to get hot. Like last year, going into the wild card game against the Rays. They scuffled offensively for the last. You know, the weaker attended before that. You'd like to take some offensive momentum. I think Bill into the post season this year. Yeah. And you talk about the offense. Now we go into the pitching side, the starting rotation. I think Bassett last night just really impressed me with the three pitches that he was consistent with. Now you look into the young guy today. And that's Jesus Lassard. Oh, and I was I was watching him several times this year, the Seattle game you could even see him in the smoke was so thick. It was ridiculous to even play that game, and he ended up playing a double header. The inconsistencies that I see on this young kid. I mean, he's getting thrown right into the fire. He'll be in the mix most likely during the playoffs. What do you think he's missing as a starting pitcher? And what do you think His positives are as a young pitcher? Well, first of all, let's preface by saying he's only 22 years of age. You're right, and he didn't push that much in the minor leagues he dealt with had Tommy John Surgery actress, senior Year of high school. You know whether nothing serious after that, But the occasional aches and fans will a shoulder problem last year that Curtailed his activity in the minor leagues, so he doesn't have a lot of experience at the higher levels. Of baseball. He has great stuff. The fastball change of slider combination. Maybe it's good. It's pretty much anybody. In baseball. I don't think that's Ah, you know, piece of hyperbole there. He's really special. Uh and I'll go to something that Ray Fosse talked about the other day, because, like you said, One of the doubleheader games on Monday up in Seattle and glad you made the brutal conditions the giant because of counsel That name and you know, Ray said something said something that I think is very accurate. And that is that if he learns, so maybe just take something off his fastball. He doesn't have to throw 95 96 every time. And I'm sure you learned that bill because you had a really good fastball when you came up that maybe to throw at night is nothing wrong with throwing 91 92 then having 95 96 When you want it, and I think that's that's part of the maturation process for him, so all he has to do is just pitch more more innings and gains more experience that kind of learned how to take a little bit off and add a little bit. Sometimes, but he's really good and they're going to need him in the postseason. Ah, it's hard to advance in the proceeds unless you have dominant starting pitching. He's gone. You can dominate Frankie Montas is a guy who can dominate as well. But You know, Frankie has been inconsistent as well. Speaking of Ken Coric on the baseball Talking show, Marty Laurie is out. Dyleski's in and I tell you some of the key points that you just said about Ray Fosse is being a catcher and watching so many great pictures. Develop as you as you get into the game, and you had to run a point. He's a young kid. He thinks fast is supposed to be the answer. When you get to the big leagues, it's off. Speed is the answer. And we saw that with Bassett yesterday. And and I agree with you. He's got a dynamic arm. I watched him in Vegas last year. I did some river couch TV games and he was really good. I mean, he spotted the ball roll well, but again in Tripoli, you can throw 95 every time you guys blow it by you. That's why You're in triple A. You either can hit a 95 or you can't One of the things that I noticed with him is just a little stutter in his in his wind up. He's a little a little different motion, and I mean, I'm sure that's going to take place is he gets older, too. A little quicker to the plate. Little slower motion. Do you think sometimes like that? What young pitchers get out there that they get so in tune and getting a ball fire. Get the ball fired. You think those things hamper young guys too? I think so. I mean, I'll leave it to you because you said in the big league, you know, I barely pissed in high school. So you know, let you analyze that. But God, everything does a very good job with this fishing staff and their five legitimate starters in six if you had Mike Minor, so I'm sure there's something in what you're saying as faras the delivery and you know, I'm really glad eventually Chris Bassett Because he's had a long and twisting path to get where he is right now. Tommy John Sony Pictures deal with Tommy John, but his recovery was anything but a smooth ride. A lot of ups and downs, and he was really good for the AIDS in a kind of a swing role last year. He has been the most consistent starter this year, so I would think there would be have to be a spot for him in the postseason rotation. Well, let's get to the bullpen because your bullpen has been lights out for the Oakland A's and closer down there. Liam Hendriks just does not get the praise that he should. Beginning. He's one of the top closers in Major league baseball. And I bet you if you asked an East Coast do you know who Liam Hendriks is? They're going to go. Who? What? Because that's the kind of guy he is. He's a very aggressive pitcher coming out of the bullpen throws hard and comes right at you. Tell me your thoughts about him. And why doesn't he get the exposure that he deserves?.

"Dave Armbrister, the Reds were finally back at Great American Ballpark this Friday night as they welcome the Chicago Cubs to town for four games. It'll be a chance for Cincinnati to gain some ground right now they trail the Cubbies by 5.5 games. This is the Hall of Fame. Alight with Reds historian Greg Roads. One of the anniversary dates we missed this year due to the late start of the season was a big one, the 50th anniversary of the opening of Riverfront Stadium. 50 years ago. June 30th 1970, the only time in club history that the Reds have opened a new ballpark in the middle of a season that wasn't supposed to happen. Riverfront was scheduled to debut on opening day 1970, but numerous delays push back the opening and made for some very nervous Reds executives who had promised all would be done in time to host the All Star game in July. Well, they just made it. The All Star game was held July 14th and gay Riverfront, the first of its many highlights, the famous home plate collision between Pete Rose and catcher Ray Fosse. Riverfront was the first all Astro turf baseball field, the plastic stuff even covering the infield. Major league Baseball didn't like that plan when they first heard about it. They wanted to see the traditional dirt of the infield and asked the Reds if they couldn't paint that part of the turf Brown so it would look like dirt. The Reds after Monsanto, the manufacturer of Astro turf about it, but they couldn't guarantee a paint. And so we were spared the sight of freight grass painted to look like fake dirt. Well, it's all a memory now. Riverfront demolished in 2002,.

"Hustle. I should have started this. It's six o'clock tonight aren't out Sportstalk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet Memories of 32 plus years of Riverfront Stadium tonight, the anniversary of the opening. I just tweeted this. I remember begging. My dad always wanted to stop it. I think it was called the 5 80 gift shop on the walk to River Fried and I wanted to buy Reds gear or like the Reds your book that year and we would stop on the street quarter and get peanuts from peanut Jim Shelton. Who was in a tuxedo and a top hat selling peanuts on the corner. I don't remember I was not here in 91 but Brian Hofstetter on Twitter tweeted me a picture of a T shirt from the Gus Smacker tournament. He's at an entire weekend of pickup basketball for all ages and abilities. I watched Coach Brandon Win a title in 1991. You see, Chris just tweeted a T shirt from this tournament sponsors being Gold Star Chili Wsbn holiday in Wilson and others. I assume that took place on the plaza level outside of Riverfront Stadium and not inside, but I don't remember the Gus Smacker tournament. Go back to the phones. How about Gino? You're on 700 wlw. Gino. Hey. Oh, no, he was on hold for so long and Gina, are you there? Oh, he's gonna put it back home. See if I can get him later. Finney Town. Hey, Mike. Hey, Lance. Hey. Hey, I just I first of all first time caller talk with you. Thank you. A real quick story here for you ever front. I could tell. I could talk all night about my about my experiences here, but my dad God rest his soul. I remember 1971. I was 10 years old. We get to the stadium. My dad got tickets through his company. Um, and so sometimes, and we sat about 10 rows behind the dugout. And they were playing the Cubbies that night and doing up the endings were going by and the Reds weren't hitting. That was the Li Mei Tommy Helms team on DH, and I'll never forget the last pitch of the game. 10 Holtzman yet you know what I'm talking about, Got to see a no hitter. Yes, I did. Last pitch of the game of 10 years old. I remember Lee may swing and a miss The crowd does not come sit in my chair, and I'm like Dad. Why is everybody cheer and we just lost and I'll never forget you look down, he said. It's not every day you're going to see a no hitter side. That is a cool story. Love. I am so glad you called tonight. Please call again sometime. Will do. Thank you, Mike about that is a 10 year old. Got to see a no hitter. Englewood, we go. Hey, Mike. Good evening. I'm well, thanks for calling Good. Yeah, I had a good story. My I think was when the In 1993. I think itwas my daughter and I went down to Riverfront Stadium. We taught a CD classic high school CD class and we got two buses and we've got loaded up with kids and went down there to the game. And the game went extra innings and when, when the game was tied, and the nine my daughter jumps up in front, everybody else OK and some of the paper over there. We're not all that happy about it. Oh, that's good. That's good. That was something. And another thing to was. The All Star game was played in 88 there at Riverfront. Yes, and I was At that game. That was when Pete Rose hit the catcher in the game. And the catcher was never the same. Ray Fosse Ross, you go. Yeah, I was there for that. 12 Hey, I'm so glad you called tonight. Thank you. Alright, pair have a have a good night. Yes, Rosen Fosse and 70 88 was that's when say, Bo didn't get into the game, right? Didn't Whitey Herzog not? And say, Bo didn't even get in at all, even as a defensive replacement, and I seem to remember people not being very happy about that decision to Ah to play spuds. How about Ah Dil Hai Dug 700 wlw. Welcome to sports talk. Land that you don't like. Very well. Thanks for calling a real quick. Yeah, my senior year in high school 1990 we've got Tio got a little bit of freedom, so we were going down to get top six. Reality sent tickets. Went to probably 20 games that summer. One of the games I believe was 1990 or 90 91. Barry Larkin. Gamely rat gets three home runs in a row that day, you assume or next to half past five in a row? Yes, In fact, the anniversary of that it was earlier this week and I have video of that in my blood. You're exactly right. He had 21 day and hit three the next day. One other quick memory. We were there for a game. Ron Robinson melded with the one in the ninth inning. I believe it was the Montreal Yes, yeah. In the ninth inning, two strikes. The umpire called Ball four walks about her next batter off. It's a two run home run over that old man, man. Oh, man, I love the stories, Thanks for calling. Have a great night. "John matterease channel nine don't waste your money coming up here in just a very short. But in the meantime, we're gonna just to revisit sort of a sports thing here, as far as the where you and I were talking about this off the year and the warriors getting beat last night. Well they, they lost a couple of key players, and there was no way they were going to there, we're going to win. But what was it Durant that came back? And. Yeah. There's a lot of pressure for these guys to come back and do it in number one. I applaud Kevin Durant. I again, I don't follow a ton of basketball, but I felt I like him a fan of him. He seems like a good dude. And I'm more a fan of now. Believe it or not, because he had everything to lose right? Come back and playing. I mean, they're you know, he's playing for thirty million bucks here we shouldn't get a contract for two hundred million. It's going to be insane but because of his love for his team. And you know, of a basketball, he came back, and with a bum leg and tried to make a go. Now the disastrous did happen, which is super fortunate. So, but again, I think I, I like that he came back and kind of put himself every, every purchase agent is families. You know, whoever everyone wants to don't play don't play you guys are down three two one. This thing is over. Don't get out there. But he went out there. So I'll give him credit number one. But also, I just think it's going to be interesting from this point forward in any professional sport of the amount of star players that are going to be less willing to play injured. You know what I mean? There's kind of an expectation, especially in football like, look, if you can, if you can run around, and if you can play enough to be still be able to protect yourself. You better get out there. That's kind of the expectation, but I think especially star players are going to, because they're going to have that fresh in their mind and say, wait a minute. The good of the team, my rear end, you know, Kevin Durant went out there. And now he's looking at took one for the team and he really took it. Hard took hard. He's looking at, you know, potentially a very detrimental injury to his career achilles are hard to come back from. So I think we'll definitely think we'll see that moving forward. And I also think it kind of couples with what I see in football right now. Which is when I played which wasn't that long ago. But it was the expectation. Nation or should say expectation, but the mindset was you play into the wheels fall off you play forever and you make much money as you can until they got a wheel you off a field. I don't think that's the mindset anymore because of the concussions, I think it's part of, you know, because the players are in the NFL are making a lot of money, these days, you don't see that mindset, you see guys are more apt to say you wanted to get that Ben big second contract, and maybe I'll play six or I'll play eight years, but I'm not going to try to play twelve or fifteen like the guys in the seventies eighties nineties in in early two thousand day. I, I just think it's kind of a different mindset now in Gaza more concerned about their health and they say, look, I want to be able to do things after the game. I, I just think it's interesting that none of a great amount of time that is changed. But I also think we'll see this in their fan. Bases out there somewhere in this country. They get mad because her favorite wide receiver their favorite linebacker favorite. Whatever is not going. Gonna play because he's saying, look, I'm a free agent next year. I know you want me out there, that's kind of the expectation, and I think he's going to have a lot of support from other players as man, we saw what happened to Durant. Don't grow. But these people are bitching about these college kids who aren't playing in bowl games who or who are shut down. Look a Boza did that this year. Yeah. Or was that last year that he just he got hurt early in the year and just said, I come back. Yeah, I I mean I in general, I feel like if you do things different with those guys is like they were you know, a lot guys that didn't play. I mean both ahead he had surgery and all that, but some of the guy that didn't play. They didn't have an injury like they were just saying, I'm just flat not playing. I think if you have an injury, if something's a little questionable, and you got a strain, or you have a this, or that I can see that more. But if you're healthy, I think is, and I'm sure people will disagree with him, but I feel like. Your healthy you kind of go to the game and you ought to your team to play and it just shouldn't matter. If you're a potential first round draft pick or you're a potential fifth round draft pick. I mean the guy making, you know, going to go in the fifth round. His life is still going to potentially change dramatically from being draft as why his why is he a, a box of nuts and bolts in the guy who in the first round all well, that's fine. You usually get in the first round is fine if you didn't play well, it's fine for it was fine for the guy he's going to get drafted later, in my opinion. Well, the, the leg I stay on the guys who are playing in bowl games and whatnot and also players now not playing an all star games. Seems like the NBA guys do. And the in baseball guys do because you know after Pete Rose lit up Ray Fosse all that time ago. Nobody's taking a game that seriously because they saw that man suffer a career ending injury. Because peop- wailed on him. And I don't know if anybody if Ray Fosse even expected that to happen. No the day rare-breed, and that was a rare instance boy think. Say, but look at the, the Pro Bowl now that's Patty cake. Man said this disgrace fares. Move the game of football but remember when we had Steve spec head coach Saint Xavier a couple weeks ago. He what he's seeing is, you know, guys, I mean, the highschool all star games, people aren't playing as much him. But even what he said, was these guys that are committing to colleges. Major colleges as a sophomore junior are kind of pulling back on their senior season. You know, I don't know if I want to do this, or if I want to in, I feel like that is completely wrong. I mean you owe it to the game you'll have to life to get out there. You're healthy and play your damn senior year of high school football. No one could tell me differ on that. But it's interesting we're seeing that trend go all the way down now into into high school and junior high pretty Sam. John matterease is coming up. And now rob, what's going on with the traffic? And don't forget the peewee all star game though. There'd be that, too. To. Yeah. That guy was. I mean you laugh about it. But that guys like hey, you know, I'm getting or in middle school. Hey, I'm getting ready to go to elder high school next year and play. I'm getting ready to go to col- rain and play do I really wanna play this is eighth grade. See a year at singer true, too. I don't know. I'm thinking about giving up my second grade year. You're gonna do that little bow, aren't you like he's holding hold now. Throw him right on the college football field played street to the pros. What he's eight peewee. I risk and not risk. Give that little kid the ball. From the UCLA traffic.

Which is why we talked about him last week and had a guest on the podcast last week. "In the lineup today side absolutely want to get him before you think could manage. I mean could be on the radio, so Eric I just want to tell you in Maryville. I saw you hit one about four fifty. Yeah. They all count the same. Just as long as they go over the fence. That's right. Alright. Becoming a giant. How did you find out? What what you thought about it? House out to dinner, and I got a call that I got traded. It's it's always it's always a good opportunity when you're in a big lake sits. Not not taken lightly not taken for granted by me and my family, and so it's it's a co opportunity to come to organization and a team that wants to win. What are the challenges few coming in? Now, I remember years ago Ray Fosse traded to the as and he had a catch catfish hunter, and Kenny Holtzman these names out of the past at a learn the staff really fast in spring training of one thousand nine hundred seventy three I think so they got to be challenging to know these guys it is a challenge. But I think it's always I think pitchers are always changing, you know, they don't feel the same as they do in spring training. Fifteenth started thirtieth starts so it's trying to get the most out of each of them each day. No matter what it is. But it's also, you know, kind of getting to know these guys in what they what they're able to do and not necessarily what you know. I think they should do or the pitching coach things they should do or anything like that. But just what what they're able to do. To be successful. Are you on a crash course right now just to get to know anybody for sure. Yeah. I wouldn't say I'm a big name guy. So hopefully, I can get to know get to know people like that. All right. Eric Kranz is with us. Of course. One of the newest giants catcher on the team last year from walkie great year for you for the city of Milwaukee. Put it in words, I with that was like last year. Honors. Was incredibly honored to be able to play in the playoffs at some. That has a team we fought to get there. You know? I don't think anybody expected us to be there and didn't really change our outlook on it or something that you know, we had a goal set set out to do that. And we didn't. Quite get our goal fell one game short of making the World Series. But it's something that you work for every off season. No matter if you're gonna start in the minor leagues or your tenure bigly. Your your your.
