"ray ferraro" Discussed on The Ray & Dregs Hockey Podcast

"Recording this post NHL creed deadline Friday night, so we're aptly calling this our special NHL trade deadline recap episode, ray Ferraro, comfortably in his hotel room in Boston, spent the day, right? With lucky it did some cameo work with TSN, but the majority of the day it is, man. By the way, that brings us up. Our brings this up, I tweeted about it 'cause I just saw it one of your ESPN colleagues. Isn't she funny? 8. Well, the only reason I found it amusing is because you and I are essentially the same height, right? I mean, I might have achieved under 6 feet. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Anyway, for anyone who hasn't seen it, Alvin look, I mean, there you are, sitting comfortably, you know, minding your own business, but your feet are like dangling in the air because they don't quite get all the way down, and I mean, that happens to me often and happen to me for most of the day behind the desk mind use. So nobody would rudely take a video in the fashion at age 8, but good fun with that you guys were having some laughs. Well, the funny part about that is AG was at home. She picked that up off the TV. And that's even better. Oh yeah, she's and she's also like seriously, she's three to four inches taller than me and so she can make any joke she wants and I got nothing. What I saw, I was like, oh, now I got to get to work. I got to get back somehow. I was excellent work, but it was fun. It was fun. And look, we're going to investigate some of the NHL trade stories, not just deadline day being Friday here, but the last couple of weeks, you know, the lead up to. And I mean, it was circus chaotic. But first of all, and we're going to talk to Chris Abbott a little bit about the trade deadline and how this might impact the Stanley Cup favorites from botany coming up as well. You know, I'm sitting in studio and there are a mass of people around us, of course, studio 6 at TSN and you're joining us from ESPN. And it dawned on me as I'm watching all of the shenanigans go on like, you know what? Maybe we maybe were finally getting this. So there were 21 NHL trades today. I mean, there were 40 plus leading into the day, but if you don't have the entertainment factor, I mean, of course you need the breaking news and you need the analysis in the opinion, but I think sports fans just demand a little bit more too, right? And I mean, you got that in your analysis and your time at ESPN today, and I'm looking at it again at all the craziness going on in TSN studio 6 and going, I mean, I think I'd be entertained by this if I were watching from home because you can't always rely on the blockbusters because today we're in any blockbusters. No, and that you go to your TV for two reasons. For news and for entertainment. Yeah, right? There's no other reason to go and watch television. So if there is no news, there better be entertainment. That's really it. So I think there was a time when we always expected more to happen on that day.

"I'm leaving tonight Thursday night on the red eye to get to Washington for rangers caps on Saturday afternoon. However, hoping all the flights can act that I get there. Otherwise, I'm just going to go fly around for the weekend. It's one of the two. Normally, see, this is the more zan ray Ferraro, because three, four or 5 years ago, that would stress you out. You would have been bothered by all of this. I'm going to ask you right now. You know, you've cleaned your driveway, partially. You've cleaned or you've helped the neighbors. Any chance to get note to Pearson so you could make sure that runway tonight is just cleaned when I land. You got anything to do with that? No, no, no, but I haven't checked on Twitter. Normally we have pictures of all the shenanigans and nonsense at Pearson by now. It's like a habit. It's like a part time. What's the weather like there? The early drag or why the report was too bad, but Islam looking good. You know what? I think there's freezing rain. That's what I read about. That's no good. It's no good because again, I don't know, you know, Pearson is 45 minutes from me. It's on the west side, so I'm assuming they got a similar amount of snow. It's not the snow. It's the freezing rain. So here's hoping that is the goal. What about you? What about you? What do we got? We got that leaf game on Friday. So looking forward to that, Toronto, and mini showed a wild, not much on Saturday, but we're on full on call watch here, right? Yeah, yeah. For any trade that comes along. At some point, you know, I don't know if you can tell or not, but so my hair dresser went down with COVID this week. Yeah. And my hair goes from just okay to long in like, it's like a chia pet, right? Drake's do not complain. My hair goes from nothing to nothing. Well, I'm hoping that, again, given the time away that Maura is no longer symptomatic and can cut my hair. You need a trim for the deadline. That's what you're worried about. Oh boy. All right, buddy. Well, travel safe. Thank you. And hopefully we get in and out of there into Washington, do the game, and then back home for Sunday.

"Got two games in hand on Seattle. If Seattle drops back into that into that group, they're one behind Minnesota in the central, and they've got it two games in hand. I'm not worried about Colorado. I really am not. What I'm curious about is, what do they think of their team and how does that relate to the deadline? Because they, when they lost kadri, don't forget, they lost burakovsky to Seattle, free agent deal, 24 goals last year, something like that 27 goals, maybe. Kadri had to close to 90 points. He's gone. They haven't had land ascog all year. Because of injury, like they don't score. I think in the abs and I think a McKinnon and these ranting and in the car and high flying offense, they're not. They don't score a lot. If they can find another forward and maybe their trade chip is Sam Gerard, who seems like a bit redundant on the blue line there behind my car and byram and caves. There's zero power play time for him. So maybe that's a trade for a forward a center that comes back to Colorado. But I honestly, I'm not worried about them. I think they're in. I think they, well, they're not in. But I think I will get it. Well, there's lots of pedigree there. There's no question. Those are your headlines. Brought to you by Boston pizza. All right, resetting post Super Bowl, Chris Abbott joining us. Presentation botanical dot CA now available in Ontario, the tano says the game starts now. And all right, you submitted all the prophets, Chris Abbott, and we had some fun at your expense in the last episode of the ran drags hockey podcast. However, as I peruse the outcome of these prophets, I see ray Ferraro going three and 5, me three and 5 and Chris Abbott 5 and three. So I can't really, it's hard to suggest, ray, we were being set up in all of this because they're pretty simple basic 50 50 answers, right? Yes, no. Field goal touchdown, all that stuff. But apps came away smiling, still didn't catch you, ray in the overall standings, 15 and 12 impressive. But abs climbs to above 514 and 13, which means I finished last. That's a good weekend. That's a good game for you, Chris. I've been average my entire life. And I'm happy to be just a smidge above average here. After the full season is finished. I thought I had a lot of fun. I bet on the chiefs the other night. I understand why some eagles fans feel like they might have been, I won't say robbed because they still would have kicked a field goal and went ahead and there was still a minute, but maybe could have been a different ending. It's funny because during the game I was like, hey, you know what? The referees haven't been that involved here tonight. Third downplay, but maybe it was. Because I'd also don't think Patrick Mahomes misses a pass by that much on third down in the red zone either.

"That perfect shot. What were your thoughts of the broadcast? I know we don't usually get Sean McDonough and ray Ferraro and Emily Kaplan and butcher grass and all those guys. I just felt super underwhelmed by the ESPN broadcast. I wasn't overly impressed myself. I felt like I was watching a game in preschool. I don't know, maybe it's because we're an intelligent fan base and we have the Internet at hand and we have the stats and so on. But it felt like they were really teaching the game to new fans. And I really, I didn't really appreciate that. At the time, I know that you're going to go off on the time and everything. You know, if you're a national program and it's a national broadcast, I mean, plan accordingly on when you're supposed to start and so on. But I really didn't enjoy it at all. I mean, I basically just watched the game and kind of tune out the play by play anyway, but yeah, it was kind of ridiculous, but it made it for a pretty long afternoon. I mean, I can't believe I'm sick as I miss Jack Edwards. I missed somebody calling the game and not having these stupid goofy Adobe graphics of the, you know, let's go to the capitols on the Ferris wheel or the freaking roller coaster. Like, wow, and then how many times are they gonna show the graphic of the bruins, little bruins cartoon with the number on the back of how many wins they have? Like just talking about. It was. It was like watching the magic school bus. Like, what are we doing? And I get that you want to teach the game to a new audience. I think ESPN is like, well, people don't understand hockey. That's part of the problem. But like, I got no benefit. I got no benefit from them putting like whenever somebody would have the puck they'd put their name above it and then they'd pass it and then they'd move the thing. Just leave it to EA Sports. Like, that looked like a jumbled hot mess. Like, there's three players, there's this thing coming off with their name and you can't tell who it is and then the graphics switch. Leave it alone. If you want to put a little gray shadow on the puck so we can follow the puck, that's fine, but they don't need to know that hampus lindholm has the puck. Just let it be from player to player and leave that up to the commentator to say hampus lindholm with the puck. Like, I thought it was very childish, like you said. I thought it was amateur hour. "It's a seven year contract. That turner has now. And so i guess they got some other guys to. They've already linked up. Kenny albert as their play by play guy eddie olczyk in their ray ferraro is also going to be part of it. I don't know if that means he's going to cut back on his tsn duties or not. Brian boucher in. There's also an analyst and leah hextall female play by play analyst. So they've got a nice little stable already early in the game here but Yeah i'd say wayne gretzky he would probably be giving ron maclean a break today saying he probably shouldn't say that and always ri- steak you know cooler with that stuff. Don't let it happen again and we move forward and i think what you'll probably get steve. He until now at the same time gretz gets it. He understands he under. He's always understood his role. He's always understood what's what's expected of him. What's expected of people. What what the fans deserve you know. He he understands that better than anyone. He's always had a great knack. Great street smarts. Great you know. He always has so. I think what he'll be able to do. Steve is he'll he'll be able to point out mistakes. He'll glaring mistakes turnovers and stuff like that. But i think you're you're going to see it done in a way that that he'll explain why that mistake happened You know 'cause we all look at it and go you know the the overtime winner in fourth game edmonton and winnipeg giveaway. Yeah it was a guy trying to throw it around desperation times anyway. It was giveaway guy. Picked it up ripped in scored the goal. I think wayne would point point out that you know yes. That's a turnover. But here's why here's what the guy was trying to do. Here's what he's thinking but you wouldn't want to that again. That's kind of how. I hear the tone of stuff going with wing yup. He's not going to bury anyone personally. Guarantee guarantee he's never you know he's he's not he's not going to say this guy should be on the fourth line and not the he might. I don't know he might tune in for sure. Big challenge for them those stevie. No i agree. It's a big challenge. And i don't know that i know what to expect at this stage. He will have to go down that that milbury lane a little. A johnny miller thing not be afraid to say the odd negative thing where it where it's needed because that's you know that's kind of what the viewer demands and Certainly the doors wide open. And i mean the paycheck speaks for itself the superstar name the biggest name in the history of hockey. That's huge for tnt to acquire. That said it's not an automatic that it'll be a success. I think about joe montana for example as an nfl analyst at just ten out he was not good so there will have to be Yeah they'll have to be some performance from wayne gretzky if that job is to be something that he stays with long-term so we wish obviously you know what they're looking for stevie because of the recent experience over the last..

For another edition of america's sports talk shows sports byline. Baseball season is about three weeks away and our fan poll question getting a lot of play. How fan safety you think going to a game. We'll be and we have a tie in the top spot. Not at all thirty eight percent enough for me to go thirty eight percents so apparently you fans are still thinking about sitting on the fence a little bit and also another category in the question not worried at all getting twenty four percent of the fan vote so check it out it's on the homepage of sports byline speaking of major league baseball. There's going to be some rule changes for two thousand and twenty one. Both the universal designated hitter in major league baseball and an expanded postseason reportedly aren't happening in twenty twenty one. Those proposals are considered dead issues. But listen to this. Aid can't completely be ruled out that the league in the mlb won't reverse course but that both sides are proceeding as if the twenty twenty one season will be played without the d. h. or an expanded postseason. That news shouldn't come as a surprise considering spring training has already started and if a universal d. h. Was going to continue being used that change should have been implemented early in spring training so that every national league team could build its team. Accordingly and while some and l. teams like the atlanta braves the brewers and the washington nationals might welcome a change. Even now others wouldn't be prepared if the league suddenly changed course. Mlb and the mlb prove last year. They aren't averse to last. Second changes both sides literally agreed to expand the postseason during the first game of the two thousand twenty major league baseball season. We're going to spend the hour talking hockey. It's going to you know it's gonna be a long part of your history and it's it's our logo and and quite frankly the typeface when you look at the type face that that the la is in when you go to the king's office and you see that typeface on the wall the same one that's been in use since nineteen ninety nine in theory will there are a lot of the design elements including a jersey. I'm looking at. That's right behind jim. In march twenty fifth anniversary with the club the number on the back the typeface for the number hasn't really changed in a good twenty years. Do you see an increasing trend of tasting Taking icing type shots at empty nets with a one goal lead is posted to because it always seems worth because of the four point swings. Interesting question i to be honest. I think we have seen this going back. Perhaps two years there was I apologize for not being able to come up with the exact year or date or season. But i think it's at least two years now in the books where the analytics have been presented to teams the teams presented to the players. And they take shots at that emptying way more than in the past used to get to the red line. Don't risk the icing. Do whatever you can't get the red line then take your shot now. It is get the puck. Take the shot. And if it's icing you live with it so i i don't have any raw data with that. I'm pretty sure you know then now with the analytics you can take a look at how many face offs you win after an icing. All those types of things You know what the percentages are when a and i. i think it's just the numbers for them are to the point where i don't think it's overwhelming but the predominance would say that the odds are the risk reward ratio is take a shot at the empty net. Come pick it has to do with issue. It used to be well. You don't want to risk the icing. 'cause you're tired you lose a face off in the automatically score and but you think about what it would take to to score in the national hockey league shooting percentages right of you know a good shooting percentages twelve percent of shots go and that's a really good shooting percentage so in those situations okay. How what percent of the time do people actually score. If i hit the empty net gains over right like it's a binary outcome it's either game over or game continues with a chance to score like i. I look at it like kind of makes sense now that you think about it a little bit more. The the numbers this year are up on five goals when you pull your goal tender. Yeah they're up. And i think it's i think the it falls into the category of cycles that powerplays in pelicans go through where where for a two year span. This certain thing will work and dan everything catches up and the adjustments made..

"Gave lardy. So that's the it. So and then i know like well might as well take advantage of kelly and ray and when we do these and so we stay on for an extra ten minutes after you know just chat and ask questions and see if we can get up to date on what's going on with them and the music for our podcast so able to do that and talk retro when i start with ray first question with this ray. Hey ray tell about your first goal. Beauty was awesome. There's no video of it. So i can make this up however i want renew fell slapshot. We're on the power play in the montreal. Four it's me on the inside of the left knee and goes between doug so tarts lanes so i like to say it was a slap shot. It just wasn't mine that's right. It's good sometimes not to have that video review that we see so many times nowadays. Jump radian ray players that catch your eye nowadays. Don't three four or five of those guys really jumped out at you. I know there are some that are going to be obvious but maybe then some that are just kind of closer to to your heart so to speak that they catch your attention and you really think they're exciting to watch while i mean the obvious of course is mcdavid given mckinnon. Yeah eyesight of matthews. I mean those. Those guys are are just so good and it like right. Now as we're as we're taping this matthews is on a fifteen game point streak. He scores every game. It's like he's playing bantam his his but his game is just expanded into a two hundred foot sort of monster game. He's he's amazing. What connor mcdavid. I think he is. I think he's the greatest skater in the history of the game his his agility and speed. And what he can do with that speed is astounding. Dry seidel is just as powerful beasts thicken past and pass a pop. Shoot the puck. You've got a heavy shot and mckinnon is just a given to me. Looks like he's playing the whole game downhill like every time he gets it. He's like he's going faster than everybody else. Who's more powerful than everybody else i. Just i just. I love a love watching him play in. There's a there's a ferocity to to his his compete now. The the guys like there's a couple under the radar guys that i really really like You see him a lot in in arizona. But i i love connor garland i i think he is..

"Would you want a locker pickup for concessions. Would you want pre wrapped food and drink versus somebody. Who's making it themselves you know would staff wearing protective gloves and masks. Make you feel safer and i wonder too. How much of this at least for the next few years is going to go beyond the the nut symbols of actually what he's safe and what's not and arenas ours included making an investment in making you feel safe so it may not make a difference wet. Were wiping down. Handrails of you talked about a couple of weeks ago. The self cleaning buttons in the elevators is staples center. Who knows if that makes a difference or not but but it makes you feel safe right no question. Necessity is the mother of invention so when it becomes necessary someone will invent something to make sure it works better and i. That's the one thing that i'm call me. Patriotic or whatever i believe the united states will continue and they will take the lead in that area. They will find ways to invent giving. You're just saying i. We already have it. The contactless payments. We already have that. I don't really use it that much. I haven't non Who knows what further is going to be done as far as innovation. I did find it funny. By the end of the survey they asked if you want the universal d. h. Or not say or demographics. Like what you like about the gave what you don't but that's a separate story for for the summer. Once hockey season is done. I've onto hockey topics now. This is something that came up during the week and actually we. We showed it. In our telecast earlier this week when the kings were at home minnesota was coming off the covert pause and we've seen all these teams around the league whether it be dallas at the start of the season new jersey recently minnesota recently philadelphia's played a couple of like teams that. Come off the pause and remember there. They don't have access to their rank. Facility is shut down for several days comeback practice for a few days and they rip off. Wins like nothing happened. How is happening here. it's. It's something i put a lot of thought into since dallas had to do it right at the beginning of the season.

"It was played on a friday night friday night in october october. Friday nights in texas are football nights right so the games on friday night. It's our opening night. Game building is sold out. We're actually at six thousand people in this building and it's friday night. Analogy is football building full period. One end sir. It's a great great game. It's close. We're going to the second period. The second period ends nyerere. Watch the crowd. And we see a lot of people getting to the exit doors or thinking. Each other gs a lot of guys. They're leaving ruling and we realized he it was halftime. Game is over there leaving so we quickly get everybody that we can together. We run outside tried to stop. Lost a thousand fifteen hundred people that we couldn't get back into the building because they thought the game was over. But that was one of the ones we always. We always talk about so many others that many other stories but that was one i well. The next time we cross paths with browder. Jim tra- living will off to cornerman. Squeeze a couple more but wreck before religio. We've gotta talk about your days. Coaching ten tech. The nights and time spent with i guess both ray ferraro end. He reminded me. That you know brent hall was part of the the night's organization at one point as well you know. Yeah the favorite race story. Because i mean you're talking about great for sixteen seventeen at that. Time was a sixteen year old. I can think of one really quick and it's not necessarily race specifically but in those years we had a tremendous rivalry with colona so clone. A bucket reuss penticton knights. I mean that was bloodthirsty in those days. I mean the games were savages. Ray will remember and and we had a pretty tough team. A pretty good. And i always remember this game. The game is going. And it's it's intense rivalry and one end of the rink. Rafer goes into the corner to get the puck. And tommy martin the infamous tommy martyn. Who was traded for a bus later on in seattle to victoria. Whatever dougie martin hammers from behind backwards just hammers him and he didn't have penalty now. Tommy martin remembers. There's a few tough guys on penticton team. So ray goes down. Referees armed goes up pardons or the penalty box and he's going to the penalty box. He's not staying on the is waiting for someone to fight or to stand over top rates going to the to the penalty box. And i can't remember ray whether it was ken. Car or berry. They're coming and they go right over the top of the penalty box right into the penalty. Box with martin. Listen say we have all made him in the building but did they get any of that era. you got most of. It's the one the one thing you might have left out a. It was both berry. Huber and ken carpark wasn't one it was both and to was was berry new the linesmen because he was just a couple of years older and berry can trying to convince them to let them go and eventually bury somehow got loose. And there's a picture cozy i have it. You can see the the guys in the penalty box. They're volunteers are working the penalty. Box store and hugues berry. Uber is in the penalty. Box car parks around the other side there in the box. They've got a call mark cornered in there and bussey. Who's become a good friend. He's in there fighting for his life. And that was that was one of our adventures in cologne. It was a tiny little bandbox old style building and man. It was wild and cozy. Was you know look ricksen..

"We get their jack Had some questions for craig button about the kings prospects up in edmonton all right. Joining me now is former. Nhl exact and former scout. Mr for tsn craig button. How are you in the house. The bubble up in edmonton. I am doing great jack and happy new year to you. The bubble has been fantastic. It really has been in the beautiful thing about it is is it the. Nhl had their return to play Now there was a template and following it to a t. Is exactly what's happened here. And as we get through near the end of the tournament It's been phenomenal. Really has some bumps at the beginning but it's been superb and i can't. I can't speak highly enough of all the people that collaborated in their daily efforts To to ensure that the players and the teams could perform at the highest level at the junior championships. Will i wanted to bring you on to talk a little bit about our nine prospects in the nhl or in the world. Junior tournament Again the the most for an organization two years in a row with the kings We'll start with the perennial favorites here and Know team canada. Obviously they're loaded. They've nineteen first round draft picks. One of those being. You know number two over wrong clinton by field. Now you and boat you both you and ray ferraro of talked about clinton's growth not only from last tournament in last year's world juniors but also just from the beginning of this tournament to present day. What have you seen in. Where's that growth specifically while. I think there's a couple of things that we need to back up on so quinton played his last game. In march of twenty thousand nine hundred know. And so now okay. You're not playing. But what does he do he does. What every player does and certainly quinton is determined and dedicated. He works on his strength. He works on all the things that he needs to improve upon to ready himself for the nhl. Because you know. I mean there was some uncertainty around when the draft was gonna be but you know you ready yourself and you get yourself in a in the best physical condition you can so that you can whoever drops you you go into training camp and quit yourself very well. Well he did all those things and then there's no training camp. There's no play and always shows up at the At the team. Canada selection cap and donnelly. Does he show up without the benefit of playing. He's also delayed by two days as a protocols. So you know. He doesn't have the better but the minute he got on the ice now. Jeff jackson his agent had said to me and and i knew this equipment put on a boat. Thirteen pounds to author. Piloted its natural. It's but he's getting stronger but this is this first time. Dow really tested himself carrying that way rafer. Oh made a great point he says..
