Letang's OT winner lifts Penguins by Rangers 3-2

"Crystal tank scored on a power play in overtime as the penguins topped the rangers three two. The tank school helped the penguins maintain a two point lead for the Eastern Conference's top wildcard spot. It doesn't matter where teams are in the standing. We need to climb and we need to rack points up. So that's how we approach it. Jason Zucker and Ricard Raquel also found the net and Tristan jarry made 27 saves for Pittsburgh. Winners of 7 of their last 9. For New York Chris kreider and Barclay Gujarat scored and yaroslav halak made 32 saves as the rangers will have two more meetings with the penguins this week. Parise scores late, Nelson nets 2 as Islanders edge Penguins

"The islanders three game skid has ended with a 5 four victory over the penguins. Moved up to the top line, Anders Lee had two goals and an assist to help the aisles move ahead of the Panthers and capitals for the second Eastern Conference wild card. We found a way tonight. We stuck with it. We got to our game. And we battled all night, and that's what ultimately I think pulled us through. Brock Nelson also had two goals in an assist, but it was Zach parisi's goal with two 43 remaining that put New York in a virtual tie with Pittsburgh for the first wild card. I was looking for breadcrumbs along the road of sex symbol DOM, you know, okay, now what do I do next? And I couldn't find any that were very positive. While Welch appeared in other lusty roles, she also won a claim for her performances in the three musketeers in the James coco film wild party and in the TV movie right to die.

"So to me, I feel like to be able to take control of your mind and really step back to think, do I truly believe this or is this from a previous relationship, a previous trauma that's feeding into this information? I always think about this idea of how you would act differently if you were given different information. Like for example, for all of the data is out there, what if someone told you your person's right around the corner today? How would that feed into a different action for you today? Versus, I'm going to tell you now the next person you're dating is going to cheat on you. How would that feed into your actions? Treat them totally differently and then the worse you treat that person because of this preconceived notion, the worse a relationship gets and that's when you get into that cycle of the self fulfilling prophecy. So we just have to keep that in mind that our brains are just so powerful and it's hard. I think it's a hard thing to kind of come to terms with that it's you that could be sabotaging your relationships and your dating life. I think it's so much easier to blame other people or the apps or your city or whatever you go to. But I think there's so much power of taking accountability. Owning it because ultimately we said this shows up for everyone and it's up to you to figure out how you're going to deal with it. Are you going to be the couple that lets this continuously become a thing and stand in the way of happiness or are you going to get ahead of it when it starts to come up? Because now you know where it's coming from. And that word deserving Raquel the way you said it. I mean, it's just so powerful to think about because we all get in our own minds where we think we're not deserving of the love that we've been seeking. And that feeds again into our actions and I recently watched the stand up special

"Now you won't find a good match if you're not looking for the right thing. And sometimes even in the profile they will say, I'm not looking for a relationship and then we select, oh, that's a good idea. Right. Believe what they put in their profile and don't think you're going to change them. Look for what you want and be brave in selecting that. We've just had this guest in the past that got on this podcast for over an hour and talked about how they were not in the place to have a relationship. And you would not believe how many people reached out to this guest. And then we had all these other people saying that they were perfectly ready. No one reached out to them. No one. So I'm convinced people don't know what they want, a lot of times, or just maybe aren't ready to face it. Because I know for me, when I wasn't in a place of really being ready, I was picking the wrong people and focusing on qualities that didn't matter. Yeah. That's a great example. And why, if I'm looking for a relationship, why wouldn't I reach out to someone who is talking about wanting a family having values or whatever it is, or even like when someone told you they didn't want a relationship, almost feeling like you needed to win and prove them wrong. And then if it didn't work out, you're like, oh, well, it's them. It's not me. They told me that from the beginning. But it's also like why were you spending all this time? It's so much easier to go for someone that's just willing to be in a relationship. Yeah, people definitely complicate dating more than they should, especially with this win lose mentality of like, I'm gonna win this person over. I'm gonna change their mind. This is my project. It's really fascinating. But Raquel, you do give us some hope here because you talk about three ways to get out of this cycle. Self sabotage. Insight, expectation and collaboration.

"Relationship sabotage, we've all talked about this in our previous episodes. We've talked about it with our listeners, but what is relationships sabotage and can you imagine having a career around researching where relationships sabotages and that is who our guest is today? Her name is Raquel peel. She is 35 years old, lives in Brisbane, Australia, originally from Brazil, and she is married and just had a baby. Congratulations for Cal. Thank you. I'm still recovering. The word recovering also appeared in your bio and Raquel says she's a recovering romantic self saboteur. She was abandoned at birth and adopted by the nurse who looked after her, so at the end of your TED Talk that just went viral for so many reasons, but at the end you say, love will never be easy, but without self sabotage, it is a lot more reachable. How would you define what self sabotage is in a relationship? Think of that. The way I've defined it is attitudes and behaviors that we employ in a relationship sometimes knowingly, sometimes unknowingly, that inevitably helps us damage the relationship justify the outcomes and withdraw from the relationship. So sometimes it's good that we can say I knew it that person wasn't good for me anyway and now I can move on. But that's the type of attitude that damages the relationship. It's being able to inevitably win. You win because you've damaged the relationship that you knew was on good for you or you win because despite all of the tricks and things that you done, that relationship survived. Well, we definitely have experienced that either ourselves or through our listeners, this win lose mentality and a lot of it comes from ego. And not wanting to look sad or that you did something wrong. How do you help people get over this piece of it? Because I see it as a self protection mechanism, but ultimately it's not serving you. So how do you advise people to move forward?

"We are so driven by fear that we're paralyzed by fear. Fear drives us to do nothing. There's this great quote by Buddha, fear doesn't prevent death, it prevents life. And I know that's a very extreme way of looking at fear, but if you apply it to dating, it's like fear doesn't prevent the bad outcome. It actually prevents anything from happening, right? Which is a bad outcome, yes. It's a terrible outcome. And when we feel that paralysis, that's when we give up on dating. That's when we become tired and exhausted by dating. That's when we take a dating sabbatical because things aren't happening because of fear. Yes. So we'll get into all of it in this episode. This is such a meaty one, so if you need to listen to it, multiple times, even editing it, it read listen to it. I need to take it in like a third time. There's so many aspects of this episode that all phases of our relationship from early dating to you've been with someone years at this point. This episode is for you, essentially. And why is our guest so essential for this episode? Her name's Raquel peel, so fascinating about her is that she calls herself a recovering romantic self saboteur and she was abandoned at birth and adopted by a nurse who looked after her. But she researches relationship sabotage because she's had to build relationships and love. Ever since she was a child, she didn't have that safety net. I'm so glad you found her UA because you found her from a TED Talk, right? What's great is most ted-talks are very much about business or I don't know. It feels like they're a lot more. They're a lot less about romantic relationships and hers really stood out to me because it's one of the only ted-talks I've ever seen about love and relationships. And when it panned to the audience during her talk, it was so wonderful seeing people of all ages, all different cultural backgrounds, nodding their head while yup.

"Know if I'm easy to get along with. A bit of a stretch. That thing. I mean, I have to say, you know, actresses are self centered self serving. And you have to be to get certain jobs done, but you have to also know that when you're not doing a job that you're just yourself. But I'm usually just in sweat pants and some kind of raggedy shirt and my kids. Oh, pretty raggedy. Oh, you know, for a whole year, actually, when I did this book, I just, you know, I went to pot. Was it cathartic for you, though, to go through? I mean, I loved it. I really loved it because what you said before was really key to me. I felt like when I came along in that poster, I was a thing to be seen and not heard. Yes, yes. And you know, by the time you get to 70, you might have a couple of things you'd like to say. What do you want to say to women about getting older? I want them to stop being scared of it because it's just another chapter in life. I want to encourage them not to be discouraged and to really embrace it and go with it. It's not time for you to give up. Don't keep comparing yourself. I mean, when I go to my workouts and I go to my yoga class, I can't do the same things I used to do. And it used to bother me. I thought, oh, I'll never. I can't even. And then it got to me that if I'm consistent, I'm going to build on just where I am now. And little by little, I was able to get better and better, never, ever. Would I be able to repeat what I did before? Because I'm not 19. I'm not 20, 30, 40, 50. You know, I'm 69, almost 70. But owning it. This is the quote I was looking for. Think of aging gracefully as a game. We might as well make up our minds to play it or just bow out and be spectators. There's nothing wrong with the latter. It's a valid choice. If you don't mind hardening of the arteries, osteoporosis, arthritis, and senility. In other words, sitting around doing nothing is far from the best option. Just as you maintain your home, your car, your garden, you should look after your greatest gift your body. I love that. Black cow has two children, tawny and Damon, and you're very honest in the book about your feelings as a mother. You say, my children, I've had some long tier soak Sessions. There was a lot of troubled water. There are moments when I've apologized for my shortcomings, beg for forgiveness. When I'm running around the world and being miss sex symbol and having this big, you know, career in film and everything, you know, I'm running from place to place to place to place. And I couldn't always be with my children when I wanted to be. And I would have governance is, of course, and tutors and this and that. But that's not the same. Yes. And, you know, eventually, I could see that this was taking its toll on my kids and it used to just break my heart. Now, this is the question, even when you were there were you there or were you really someplace else in your Raquel nest? Because even when you were there at home, were you there for them where you present? Were you fully engaged with them? Or was the Raquel less of your life so big? I think I was often preoccupied. I felt loving towards them. And I would, you know, tuck them in. But it wasn't the same as being there for them as a mother 24/7. Yeah. You know. In the book your daughter, tawny talks about how you would occasionally sign cards and that sometimes you would put Raquel and not mom. Isn't that sound awful? You know, I sign a lot of autographs. And I just get used to doing a Raquel rock out Raquel. And I have an automatic thing, you know? And if I was in a hurry, I would sign something and, you know, you know. How was your relationship with your children now? Because I'm sure they missed you as well, mother. You know, you know, no fault of my own, but they're both great, great kids. There are people of character. They're wonderful. Everybody knows them, loves them, because they're just decent human beings. They're fun, they're smart. How are you able to mend those fences? I just started out realizing that I really needed to swim out to the way I needed to take a lot more initiative and just keep letting them know that I wanted to be there in their lives with them that I had something I could offer to them. And little by little, you know, the disappointment or the lack of confidence they had in me in that area. Because melted away. I read of a time where tawny I think was in a private school and you went to school as Raquel Welch and all your Raquel. It was just dressed like a young woman. You know, I had like tight jeans on and hip boots. And it didn't go over so well, right? Parent teacher meeting, you know, for the parent teacher meeting. And so then, did you stop going to the parent teacher meeting? No, I tried to realize hello, you know, reality check. You know, you're not just doing your thing, you know, you now have to change gears because it's not all the same. It's not all. It's not all the same. You know, you representing their mother. And so that's a completely different thing than you're used to. You were just talking about Halle and Beyoncé and J lo and you were saying those women have something more than just their bodies and their faces. Yeah, exactly. There's a spirit and a yeah. Well a joy. There's a joy and there's a femininity and a kind of warmth and some kind of heat that comes from them in a nice way. Yeah. You know? I like to think that I'm not just wasn't celebrated just because I looked a certain way. Because the world is full of good-looking girls. Yeah. But it's because of something else here in the heart and soul of mind that comes together and makes it makes you you. Absolutely. Make you approachable enough that people feel the heat. "You know, your heart, soul and what's going on inside. You see, I'm the opposite. I love being with my thoughts and sitting with myself. Well, I do now, but I had to get over that. Yeah. Well, that's exactly what I was talking about. I am sure if you are a rock el Welch. And when you walk into the room, everybody stops what they're doing to turn into are those really our boobs. You know, they're looking for the cleavage. They're looking for the body. They're looking for, as you say, in the book, you are every man's fantasy when you've lived that your whole life when you're now sitting at home alone, what is there? Well, there's plenty I have my children. And I do have a mind. And I have my emotions, my heart, my soul. And those things are still alive and well. I just had to unravel the things that hadn't I hadn't been dealing with because I was just too busy to rushing rushing busy busy. Well, coming up, she's been married four times, had a string of suitors. Can you imagine? Miles long, but says sex is overrated. Raquel Welch says sex is overrated. True. So all the women watching tonight when your husband comes home, say, Raquel Welch says sex is overrated. Rachel Welch has defined sexy for generations of men and women too. And in her book, beyond the Cleveland she mentions, spending time, I love that phrase. You're so discreet. Spending time with everyone from Dean Martin to Elvis to Burt back Iraq, you name it, Burt Reynolds, Bob Dylan, also made the list. So what does spending time with mean? I sort of set a category about all the famous men. I'd had, you know, spent time with while I was working and getting friendly with them and if you hang out, you're on location, you know? But I made it a kind of like little multiple choice quiz like out of all these guys, which ones do you think? Irresistible to me. Yeah, you asked that question. Because I don't believe in kiss and tell anyway. You know, it's just tacky. I would think Elvis would have been. Irresistible to you. You know? I Dean Martin too. 'cause I think Dean Martin would have been so fun. Well, they were all interesting in their own ways. But actually, those two guys love, but not no. That was not the one. Not the whole, you know. The whole 9. Not the whole enchilada. Enchilada. Okay, so tell us who this is about. He's like a heat seeking missile, a smoking hot romantic, a heat seeking missile. Who are you talking about there? I was talking about Richard Burton. Richard Burton. Yeah, who I did a movie with in Budapest. And he was just so charismatic. He was just really something. A heat seeking missile. Uh huh. I love that, okay? You say, this one, he was like, high octane energy who was that? That would have been Elvis Elvis. Yeah. I octane. Oh, energy. Yeah. He had all this stuff, you know, in him. He was like, charged up. But then he had it was all contained in this cool demeanor, you know? Okay, so I'm going to just ask it. Elvis ever seduce you? Oh my gosh. No, actually, Elvis never seduced me. Did he ever try? Well, he invited me someplace that I decided not to go. No, because you know, I just didn't want to be another notch in his gun, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So tell me this. You write on page one 91 that sex is overrated and constantly hyped far beyond what it can deliver. If you're lucky, it occurs with some regularity, but it's not the whole enchilada. That's right. It's not the whole enchilada. No, I really think I mean sex is great, of course, but sex to me is an expression of the relationship and the feelings that you have for somebody else. The exchange, the nurturing, all of those elements, you know, sex is a beautiful thing. But I just think it's hype type. It's like addiction to sex here in this country. You know, the thing about it is you're all for everything. When you are Raquel Welch, looking like you do and looking like you certainly have in the past when you're at the height of your Raquel Elk ism miss. My raw calmness. Your Raquel mess. Yes. Okay. Everybody thinks you're having sex all the time. Well, that's our problem. That's your problem. No, I mean, I'm not a prude. I'm really not. I just feel like people are looking. You need that chemistry. That's part of it. But it's one part. It's not the whole thing. One of the things you say now. And I think this is interesting. You say that we have become a society of sex ambitions. Yeah. Sex ambition is. What do you mean by that? Well, I mean, everywhere this is just me, but every player I turn, I see porno queens and pole dancers and I mean, even little kids, you know, that I see like three, four, 5 year old kids, you know? It's actualized. Well, they got the big hair, and they got the little things in the midriff showing, and maybe a little, you know, things thinking in the belly button and going, what? You know, this is kind of crazy. We're sort of programming this kind of an attitude towards life when it's really about developing your whole self. I mean, I'm a professional actress, so this is part of a role I play, you know. And I'm good at it. But it's not me as a person. And all the men that I have really fallen for are those men that have reacted to me and have made me feel like it's I'm a person and it's not that they're going to bed with rock out Welch. What kind of man would that be? Ah, you can sense that that person sees you. And not just what you look like. You know, if I find that the rapport is there between us as people and there is and Denny, oh, she's that, you know, and people get a little tongue tied and they're over impressed with it. I mean, I do understand, but after a couple of days, you know. You have to, I mean, am I getting through to you? You know? Somebody that sees you. I'm just a human being, you know? You know, put my high heels on one foot, you know, and shoot at a time. Yeah. Exactly. Now, do you think that you are high maintenance? Oh, I am to work, but not the rest of the time. Not the rest of the time. No. So a man with you would have an easy time. You would be easy, easy. To get along with..

"Anything to you. You are listening to The Oprah Winfrey Show. The podcast. For four decades, she has reigned as one of America's most famous sex symbols that killer body and Maine of auburn hair made her a worldwide sensation, but despite being a household name, Raquel Welch has rarely spoken about her life offscreen. Now, at 69, Raquel is opening up in a deeply personal memoir. But before we get started, let's take a little peek back at this one of a kind career. The year was 1966 when a 26 year old Raquel Welch appeared in a dough skin bikini for the movie 1 million BC. Almost instantly, the mother of two became one of the world's sexiest women and began a remarkable 40 year career. She has starred in more than 30 movies and dozens of television shows. Along the way, Raquel Welch landed on the cover of time and acted with some of Hollywood's most legendary leading men, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin Elvis. She starred on Broadway and even won a Golden Globe for her role in the film the three musketeers. Offscreen with more than half a $1 billion in sales, Raquel's signature wig line has proven she has got ahead for business too. Recently, she made the list of GQ magazine's 25 sexiest women in film of all time. They said, back when women had bodies, Welch was the body. Oh my God. Well, this is what 69 looks like. Bring it on. "Hi how you doing are you. Who's your favorite batman. We were just talking about that raquel. How your question i apologize. I wanted to do questions. Jimmy jimmy is being often is a bully. I apologize to the joker. I want to talking about it near a big bully and you ruined my question. I would use your favorite batman in which is very joker as in the movies. Yes and if you don't watch. This is jimmy's ritual question. That's the perfect reaction to that question jack on purpose just anybody dark knight inc. It's dark night okay. Jokers you know what you answered the question to me because heath ledger christian values the boat mail of it. Now that sadler. What's up now. Are you a big comic book movie person or or what do you enjoy i. It just kind of depends on my mood. But i mean for the most part. I like comedies. Like action films wrong calms. It really depends on what i feel. Are you streaming anything. You watch any theories out there. Honestly i haven't been watching much. tv. I don't know i this camp. I've been doing like a lot of shots in journaling at night when i chill out and then i A yo meason books. And then i knew Like i've been reading. Oh what you've been reading on both my purchase guys. She's kicking you out late a guy. That's a ball stuff with there right now. Currently reading a book that some friends recommended. It's called the perfect marriage and it's like it's like a crime series right now. It's actually pretty good so like snapped episode. not i. He like his wife like a top lawyer and He ran had an affair They have a lake house. He had an affair and then the mistress she was murdered. Ally wife is defending him but then she also just found out he cheated. So it's this whole ordeal. When i was just like all right. Lots of drama. So is it true or is it a novel or is it true. Crime novel okay. But i'm sure it's related to many true stories. I i watched too many of those either dateline to a snap and i'm like all right. I gotta watch something to bring me back up because it's too much it's too much. Evil dead in the seth rogan movie or. Watch one of jimmy specials on netflix. That's also depressing now are you. Are you engaged. Am i get you are you. Are you teaching engaged now. All you know. I thought you said you're engaged. Okay listen busy for everything. What's that life is too busy for honestly. Have you ever been married not me neither. It scares me the older. I get the more and ain't nobody wants to so there is that but i mean it does kind of freaked me out like relationships are great but there's something about being married. That really scares the shit out of me. I actually the same way. It's funny do you want to married at some point. But i believe in marriage wants some like but then when i start thinking about it or start planning it gets a little sketchy and i'm like oh You know we're we're busy. We're busy yeah. It's no rush a jimmy. That was anybody else you gingerly going around is but this is a. I'm just saying it's funny. Somebody will be like. Why are you put the pressure on me. Joan calm down with that question. I know what the heck it's fight we. Let's you're right and i apologize. What happens we prepare by going over our prep sheets and they all give us facts and that was one of the fact that was listed so i figured i would just talk about that but it's not true so i'll forget i even asked and i'll after he wants to us to read that really read it. I wouldn't just make that up all reduces the that's i wouldn't just make that up for no reason. Just throw check great. Oh shoot a. You might want to pretend like you were engaged. The get our guys out of trouble because they're going to hear some shit evidence rock cal. Oh that's okay though it's going to weaken it's been a year to have we chomping at the bit here or what. I mean. listen. It has been a long ass year and a half i I cannot even explain emotions for this week. Like i am beyond excited This year has been like a lot of self grows for me in general But just kinda. I don't know there's been a major shift and mentioned like i said i mean having such a lengthy time off like where the heck is the motivation. Not like i am so motivated back out there. Yeah what have you spent this year kind of doing. What have you been concentrating on. Or what have you been focusing on that you wanted to. That was something that you feel. Kinda wanna put some energy here. You know. I focused a lot of myself. There's i'm super. Ocd unlike artists. Like my life in general and so I mean. I have nothing else to do. Besides kind of hang out for one and i got a lot of stuff done outside as far as my house projects. I've been putting off for ages but then on top of that like you know. I've always been the athlete in the person. I coach highschool gymnastics and stuff and then I'm always sitting here doing guest speaking's everything and at some point. I don't even know where kind of lost myself a little bit. it's like i wasn't paying attention and my mouth or what i'm telling my athletes and then i've always like watched my film. I've watched my opponents film in kinda just always grown mike. It's like okay. I pick apart things just grow and i've got to a point that i quit paying attention to things like just like where was like my true passion where it was my grind for all that so Kinda hit the reset button and like faced all that stuff really pick myself part And realized like a lot of emotions that i was actually holding in for a while now and then you know i mean this whole thing with you saadallah. It's been extremely frustrating. So kinda just like understanding and learning a lot of patients are how to learn a lot of patients when it came to my long way off of eighteen months in surgery on a broken leg and all this stuff so now this kind was just like the cherry on top of everything In there i went through a bunch of sports psychology and like just found like a better place with that Act like i really like human tune with myself. I started I switched up some stuff in my camp sir turning different and are focused a lot on like my emotional and mental state but then on top of that i was telling my thyroid issue for the last three and a half years and i finally got that under control in a natural way to get past this Bullshit in so. It's just been one thing after another. I think a big part of me you know. I didn't realize how like sometimes fear can actually get you. I didn't realize like i have such an outgoing crazy busy lifestyle that i didn't realize a part of me was like living in fear and let those emotions gets me and i actually was supposed to fight a penny on the.

I'm where i'm wearing my actual by mac walden's but i apologize. I can't have my air on. it's too hot in here. And the air conditioning makes too much noise. So i have to put this. I literally blow this thing on my bare legs. Like an old lady. It shows you that. I just don't miss says i listen jimmy day that about being and you're on the way but that's the reason i'm doing is not because i think it's completely sensual. It's not because hot and it's bliss this cool air blows on my legs. I was reading up about ariana lipsky or we reading here. she was in. Everybody loves a comeback store. Yes they do and you know. She's down a couple of fights. Yup not only she down a couple of fights to doodles fights second round. Tko's yeah good fighters them. Give me the fucking dan. They're all good fighters. Well no well. What are you trying to say. Nothing who do you got a bone the big with honestly no one. I know. I know you got nothing. Who's bronchial bending fighting pennington. She is fighting penny kyanza panicky. Did somebody have a name would like a a bone in. It gets the wrong nickname with bone. Something possibly. I don't necessarily read the nicknames. Waiter the whole purpose of my joke. I had a panic. It makes no sense now. Okay i thought some i do. He talked about the nicknames or something and somebody said something that ryan won't know many bomb sunday nickname. That's her name that she's undefeated seven. I believe her first fight. She's fighting lipsky. I got confused. Yeah no there's no bone she's fighting lipsky. You have a bom to pick with somebody. But he does now. That should sail queen sale. That ship sunk we. We've get that whole thing happen. No no that should be. That should be the promo for this week's episode. I don't know what happened. That should be the promo all the episodes now. That should be the promo for this week's episode we don't it makes no sense exactly perfectly right now at the end of the promo who's on today's well we have our yanni lipsky. You know that and kell pennington. She has a bone to pick with her opponent. Does it work. Jimmy jimmy without the setup. I wanted to do a rigor but it's not good at all though. There's no no because you were saying. Glenn doesn't someone have a bone in their name bone but i already wants you to fix it in my china fixed it. Yeah aged jimmy of c. Unfilled russell the pricing. Just bermuda back down sure you know. I was devastated. And i take a totally fucking turn for the you know to be depressed. I'm so upset about norm macdonald. Pay me to jimmy. I just. I'll tell you right now. Yup i i watch when on board or does not out of in in my bathroom. Whenever i'm i'm on my bed i watched so many enormity. Donald is pies old podcasts history. His he's a so dude he was sobre larry as as a comic and i don't know he stuff. I don't like stories too much. I don't like long winded comics. His locking i would listen everything from his most joke on on conan to To what is he did just stories. He's fucking it was just a just. What do you think of him as a comedian. Larry norman's amazing because he could do one of two things he could do the meandering silly slow story that would kind of pointless asides that were just funny because you knew. He didn't give a shit but he could also do a perfectly constructed brutal joke like he could do whatever he wanted and he when he would like when he when he hosted the espy's when you watch that some of those jokes were amazing and it's one of the best jokes ever written is his. Oj joke at the as we could do work brilliantly crafted jokes or he could do the long stories if that's what he felt like doing just to sit in the discomfort. He's amazing. I seen him if it's on youtube doing the presidential president correspondent. What has the. I thought that was first of all. He yearly chuckled himself. He doesn't care if jokes a i'll tell you know they were laughing. It's not all the times. It was just so awkward for everybody. But had he never got uncomfortable in order munich. It's almost like like when he was telling his stories of jokes care landed. I don't know if that makes sense. They didn't lay it. He was still just like just happy. Go along just just he was just as please the thing you're right and i'm sure he cared if they landed but his way of being on stage was so he always seemed like he was in a pretty good mood too and i think that helped to is that he was just up there feeling. Good enjoying himself. And i think that kind of help people through stories. Because they're like he's enjoying the fuck out of this and it's funny and it's fun to kind of go onto this little trip with them or for lack of a better word and plus it's just. His delivery was perfect His cadence twenty spoke was very easy to listen to and great. It was just an incredible and it's like heard. Nobody knew he was sick. No nine years. He had lung cancer. And i'm sure that like his closest closest friend might have.

"This is what book hooked you actually and thanks for listening. This week. i'm talking to raquel was who's a sophomore book. How moon fuentes fell in love with the universe is out now from simon interest for books for young readers now in this episode. Kellen i get into. her journey. Started out as a visual artist and how she ended up finding her way to writing through the use of poetry. Great conversation so. I hope you enjoy and listening to so cal. What book hooked you. It was christie's great idea from the baby's club series by anna. Martin i remember how although is when i read it but that was the first book i remember. I had to be like every single one of the series that i get my hands on on. I logged i still. I still remember it very clearly. Now we didn't. We didn't have a lot of money growing up. But occasionally i would get a babysitters club book as a present like for birthday. And i would like breed them over and over and over again till i basically had them memorized. So that's probably why. I remember them so well. And my first attempts at writing china right babysitter clubs fan fiction. That's and was a reason why christie's great idea is kind of the one from that series that sticks out for you just that it's the first one i think i'm just a made have not been the one that i read i but that's what i remember is starting starting without on south and so by the sounds of it with the babysitter and beyond it sounds like In your young life you were You very much flocked books. You an avid reader. Am i assuming that correctly. Yeah actually i resist reminded of this. Recently i went out of town with my mom. We visited my grandmother is Burks town on the border. And like when i'm traveling i get over stimulated overwhelmed really easily by everything So it's a lot worse traveling It's hard to retreat. On from the stimulus so Also i live with chronic migraines which makes it worse because they the brightness millstones can be very pain fall a instill in order to cope. I read and i have a specially traveling. I checked with my kindle. And i ride and i think like three or four novels last week and my mom got really irritated with me and she tells me the same since Telling me since i was little. Which is you re too much to read too much. Why are you still reading. My mom trying to survive right now. So yes i. When i was little she would take my books away to punish me so he had. It was like my great love since i was little so reading. It sounds like was and still is sort of this comfort. Place that you can carve out for yourself Does that does that. Resonate doesn't make sense when you agree with that. That's the comfort room. And in the books i was reading war romance books. And so there's his guarantee of a happily ever after and which makes any anxiety. I'm experiencing like in other parts of my life. I don't mean to transfer it to this book. i'm reading. Because i know it's gonna work out so and then but i'm always interested especially for people that write for young people when you were a young person because you had a childhood says that sounds very much Centered around books. How did your relationship to reading change when you entered kind of your teenage years for some it kind of falls off because adolescents. They get busy social life in school and things like that others. It's still there. But they're reading. Focus changes as far as what their likes. Aren't things like that so for for you as a teenager. What was your reading life like I still read a lot. Maybe not as much as when i was in grade school or middle school but I attended a dreyfuss. School of the arts in west palm beach my major was visual art and i specialized in painting and so i guess i maybe focused less on books that focus that create a focus shifted to visual art. I yeah. I even went to art school and college for a little bit or an art college. I should say and I did some illustrating later on Painting sculpture ap classes portfolio review days etc was like very intense but also very cool. So because you Were creatively focused. When but you know working in different mediums working in visual art. At what point did the idea of being a writer Kind of enter your life. I was in the fourth grade and it was mysterious class. And i just said i want to write books. I wanna be an illustrator and it's really cool because actually attacked him miss berry and she has. My first book was really cool. My mom face time. I got to see her. So that's worth great. Yeah it's awesome and you know in fourth grade. You know that was a dream that that we're working towards because you know every kid around that age is ask what they want to be what they want to grow up I wanted to be. I think a veterinarian at that time so of course. I am not a veterinarian. I became an english teacher in educator and it sounds like you kind of Maybe keep state a little bit closer to that dream. But was there a time then in adolescence or adulthood in young adult life where you kind of went back to that dream from a fourth grade and really had your motivation are you were more driven to wanting to be an author like i said. I went to art school for high school. I'm on. I attended an art school in college but i for all kinds of reasons. I dropped out and attended a community college in a journal. A and then. I transferred a Near west florida where. I got a degree in cultural anthropology and i specialized in the study of shamanism so From there i attended The fashion institute of design in los angeles and i studied jewelry design but while i was studying.

"I feel like there's an extended family of listeners. And my guess become part of that family and and being able to share like you've been on before and and and i'm thrilled the heavy on again so we can talk about what's changed in your life and what you've done. What new beauty. you're bringing out. There is just very rewarding for me as a host and i hope for my audience. Thank you know yet. Has i think if we n the beginning. I felt like we were all kind of like what do we do. And you feel like. Oh 'cause i think about all the times. We said. If i only had more time in a day i sometimes it's the opposite that you didn't get anything done because you had so much time that you didn't get anything done and i felt like it was like one of those things. Where like in the beginning. They couldn't sleep. I couldn't sleep at all. I was up to like three or four in the morning. Like this is crazy because the days were so long but Yeah i feel like. I think it's all on how you look at things and i felt like i really did embrace the gratefulness of having that extra time with my family The one on one. Like you know in my family. And i would zoom at night to like my my aunt's like my aunts and cousins and my sister we would all get on the phone on zoom and we would do theme nights like we did like a kentucky derby night where we all dressed up in like big hats wonderful and my aunt had this little old fashioned little horse racing machine when we were all betting on. It's just silly stuff and we are dressed up of course from the waist up right because you can be in your pyjamas if you want to but It would make a theme like then one night was game night for something else but just trying to like keep your brain going. Keep your keep your minds working so that you didn't fall victim to being depressed or or you know just falling into that little rabbit hole. It's very easily many people did. Unfortunately i've shared this a couple of times in the podcast but it you know apologize listeners. If your board hearing the story. But i know raquel hasn't won positive side of the pandemic is In the past you know. I used skype to record my podcast and i would often get guest. I understand what skype is would. What do you mean. I have to download something. Well how does this work. You know Trying to get a phone number at this point ninety nine percent of people recognize them. Like i went out. Got a zuma count you know and and because now then you mentioned your ants. You're like oh we know how to zoom now and so that has been a a small kind of blessing. Now than i have been there. I mean in fact when guests reach out to be the or we're going to do this via zoom while another way and so it is easier communication about getting guest out. Everyone understands that and it just makes it so much easier. I know when when you said zoom. I my saw it as i go. Cool. 'cause i i wasn't sure is going to be on the phone and i was..

He's going to you a and the fall. So that's coming up like an august but yeah when i'm not doing music on the golf course somewhere in tournaments watching in place. That sounds awesome. Sad play yourself not really. I used to play But i definitely need some lessons in it's gonna take awhile. It's gonna take a while to give me back. So how did your boys and kind of if you don't wanna talk with us or not but no how did your boys find this niche that they were good at that and well a lot. It's gosh years ago. I think there were seven and nine My ex husband joined a country club down the street and they started playing. And before you know it they just would go every single day and just fell in love with it and then before you know it. Can we play tournaments. And i was. I said i don't know can you like are you are you a. I don't even know if you know how like let's try it. So that was kind of the beginning for them and never forget it at seven and nine was their first big you know. Us kids Junior world tournament that in it was fun. It was really fun to go. Watch them and see but they're out there every day rain or shine you know one hundred fifteen degree weather out here. "raquel" Discussed on How to Be a Better Human

"Had in a ray of attitudes and behaviors that would contribute to someone getting to that stage where they are joined the same things again and again defensiveness so feeling victimized feeling misunderstood feeling like that is an attack coming whether it's real or not perceiving that you are about to be attacked also trust difficulties carrying the heavy From one relationship to the next thinking that you're going to be betrayed at any time so no being able to trust the romantic partners checking up on the social media feeling really agitated uncomfortable in a progressive if not with you controlling to to to certain level because of that to me. The most interesting factor was lack of relationships skills and elect talking about that because as humans. We don't get taught how to love. we don't. it's not something that we sit and think about. It's all part of education. I would like to argue that. We need to be taught how to love. And you might be looking at. You have a partner. Who is quite insightful. In that person cheese you how to do it but some people are not some people stumbling on relationships not knowing what to do not knowing how to navigate. It's okay and i think that's been having that incites that i need to learn how to do this. I need to be kind to myself. I need to be able to communicate to my partner that this is new to me. I don't know what i'm doing. Can we learn together. Can we do this together. It's interesting because i feel like that sense that you just said even if that it's okay to learn and it's okay to not be perfect. It feels like so many of us come into this thinking like if i'm not perfect. That is my fundamental core right. I'm not worthy of love. If i'm not already perfect that love. I don't think a lot of at least. I don't i certainly did not think about it as a skill. Although it is one that you.

"raquel" Discussed on How to Be a Better Human

"I'm chris duffy and this is how to be a better human today on the show. Let's talk about love specifically about how sometimes it seems like people keep finding themselves in love with the wrong people over and over and over again. Maybe you identify with that for yourself. Or maybe you immediately thought of a friend or family member who seems to fit that pattern before. She met the love of her life. Psychology researcher kelp heal. She self identified as a romantic self saboteur and her early experiences. They hit affected her attitude and behavior towards love. Here's how she described it in her. Ted talk my name is raquel. I am recovering romantic self somewhat. I assume that people in a relationship with me. We will eventually leave me. I also assume the my relationships will fail without much evidence. Consequently i am often thinking how best to protect myself and i count on the four horsemen of the puck lips to do the job with criticism defensiveness contempt and stonewalling. Just ask my husband but let me tell you. It doesn't work so a lot of people come to me and ask. How did things change for you. what happened. I have been conducting research into what works to maintain long-term relationships. But before you tell you let me just say we should be pursuing a relationship. That comes our way. I would like to tell you to pursue those relationships to have the potential to what they are good in. What standing in your way is your self sabotage tendencies. Change is really hard but not impossible. So if you are someone who needs to break the pattern of self sabotage. Please be kind on yourselves. It's natural to protect yourself but the way out of it is to have insight into who you are in a relationship your expectations of your mental honest and how best to collaborate with them. Because after all if you know who you are in a relationship your will also have a chance to get to know you and together that you can break pattern of sabotage. So what do you think does that sound like you or does that sound like someone that you know for me. I think that anyone who's interested in having a relationship should be thinking about these questions. That raquel is asking. Who are you. What are your expectations. What are you looking for. So many of us end up undermining our relationships in ways big or small without even knowing it and today on the show. We're going to hear from her. All about how to break that cycle of romantic self sabotage and how she.

"That's nominaux by. And that dreamy voice belongs to use half of the INDIE pop duo. The other half is her partner Co, parent Louis value. The couple started making music together while living in New York, but after Hurricanes Maria hit Puerto Rico. It decided it was time to go back home that return in the very meaning of home inspired their new first album. That could SA. I am not a native Spanish speaker, so I had never heard the word was skull Ya and so I loved it and I love the definition being a troublemaker. Are you by nature a troublemaker? I mean I would say no. But I do like i. kind of like what it implies in a way I do think that I'm always curious. I don't know I feel like I. Do have may be a troublemaker sort of nature when it comes to maybe making music like I like to take two worlds that are not supposed to come together and bring them together like to create and work with tension, so maybe in a way. That's why I was very much drawn to the name. Growing up in Puerto Rico. What kind of music was on her? On my Dad's side, a lot of so three. Oh Music Rock. He loved rocks and on my mother's side. My mom was more like an MTV head like. She just loved Madonna Prince Chardonnay. She was like more like mainstream. So I think that she will was more to English meet like English spoken music, and Spanish music, so we heard a lot of that, and that's mostly what Puerto Ricans here like we you know. Our airwaves are all like top forty American music, so we grew up with a lot of American music on the radio. But also like. And a lot of the Puerto Rican music was really has always been really important for my dad and my dad really taught me to love the music that was from my home country. Sucre up on the island. What's the turning point where you decide? You want to move to New York. Well I mean I studied architecture and design, and it was working at an office, and then I felt that really that may be. Our design wasn't really what I wanted to do. Like a wanted to be creative. And, so, I got I got into Rhode Island. School of design for my master's degree and I decided to textiles, and so I kind of knew that I might ticket to get into new. York was to actually go to maybe a school where I could get a job in new. York because I always dreamt about going to New York I mean my. My mother was born in the Bronx, and my parents were flight attendant, so I saw them come back and forth, and you know. New York has such a powerful presence in movies in the media. always felt like as a creative person that I wanted to go to New York and see like like I wanted to kind of find myself creatively there. How did you meet Lewis? Lewison I met at a friend's Party I. Mean I feel when you're Puerto? Rican your Puerto Rican near New York. You're bound to just be in party you'll. You'll probably meet anybody if you're around the same age I had the sort of like Make Ban with my friends Ban The way you putting it in quotation marks. Because I think it was sort of like mostly like a band that we never really kind of record anything we had songs, but it was mostly to pass the time and have fun like it was a timer. Like single just writing about like you know like just being single in the city, and it was kind of like a silly kind of project, but we were kind of playing our songs and. We used to do like weird like Spanish covers of pop songs, and we were doing a cover of bed romance of Lady Gaga in Spanish. and. I didn't know how to finish the song. I didn't know the cords Lewis comes in. I know the course of that song. And then he came in, and we finished a song from there on I knew he made music that he had like a whole history with bands. He had actually come to New York to make music end. Just like that we connected. We started hanging out jamming and. I showed some demos that I had with with the beginnings of what was boost cowboy Dan was super excited about it and immediately we. We hit it up and we started making music and we fell in love. But which came first the music or the Romance I have said a music came I for sure I. Main I'm seven years older than Louis so in a way I kind of felt a little bit like I. Don't really know if this is GonNa be a good thing. Again felt a little bit nervous, but I'm like, but I have a lot of fun with this person and he's super talented, so the music did come first.

How Is The U.S. Economy Doing?

"Begin today a little piece of audio you a mere twelve seconds. Not Too long won't be too painful but inside it. There is a whole lot to digest. Here you go. I believe that monetary policy is and a good place and should continue to support sustained growth a strong labor market and inflation running close to are symmetric two percent objective. Those those of you recognize that to be a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Not too tough really given the subject matter. Go to the head of the class. If you identified the Speaker as Richard Clara the vice vice chairman of the Fed a gold star to you. Now why are we starting with him. A couple of reasons honestly number one because the Fed has been taking some heat it lately for having gotten a lot of its economic forecasting wrong. Hello inflation number. Two because Clarita said today and chair Powell says often the really the economy's pretty good number three because pugh is out with a study today. That says not everybody out in the actual economy agrees with the fat so so two interviews with which to test those premises. I about the Fed Sarah Bender. She's a professor of Political Science at George Washington University where she studies the Fed. Welcome to the program. Thanks thanks for having me. What do you make of the vice chairman speech today and more importantly how the feds sort of is positioning itself in this economy right now? Well the Fed is saying saying so far. So good The comedies on a good track Congress's given us a dual mandate of low sustainable unemployment and low inflation Kevin. And we're hitting him. He's not telling us really where things are going in the future. He's saying data dependent meeting by meeting. But he's telling telling us the economy is on a good course he Said and and chair. Paul says this all the time that they're going to you know work to keep the expansion going as as long as they can and one of the things chair Paul says and Clark said it today was that You know the longer expansion goes the more it helps people at the bottom. How much can the Fed really do though for the people at the bottom of this economy but the fence so far is doing a lot by keeping a monetary policy not so loose and accommodative right and you see wage gains at the lower end of the economic spectrum at a certain point though? There's only so much that monetary monetary policy can do and absent fiscal policies. That might say deal with job training or job relocation or healthcare. There's is only so much weight that can be put on monetary policy makers. Let me carry that forward to an interview. We're going to have here in a couple of minutes with A upholster from pugh who has a new study out today about economic inequality in this country. What can the Fed do on economic inequality which consistently ranks pretty high in terms of what what people are worried about in this economy? Well the best contribution they can make is to keep an eye on employment and do as much as they can to Stoke job growth but without sparking inflation keeping an eye on the health of the financial system so that people have access to quality and so forth at the end of the day though. It's really the limits of what monetary policy makers can do. The really simple line is heading into an election year. Right is. It's the economy stupid frame that for me in terms of the Federal Reserve and the role of the economy in the next eleven months of of our common experience. Well Congress gives the Fed to commands. Keep inflation low keep jobs growing. That's what the Fed is aiming to do. Oh here and the extent that they're successful it means the economy's growing and on an even keel in. That's what helps incumbents get reelected Sir Bender under she's At Brookings also Professor Political Science at George Washington University professor. Thanks for your time. Am I appreciate sure. Thanks for having me okay. So all of that said interview number two now from the Pew Research Center who study out today shows as I said that not. Everybody agrees that the economy is all sunshine and Light Ruth Galmoc. She is a senior researcher at Pew Rookie to have you on for having me if I say that seventy percent of respondents to this Survey that Y'all did if if I say that they believe the economy is rigged. Is that too strong word. I would say that. They think that the economy is unfairly favouring powerful special interests interests so we asked whether the economy was generally fair or whether it unfairly favored these powerful interests and seven and ten Americans that they did not think it was fair. We should point out. There's as a partisan divide here as with most things in this country now that's right. Republicans are about evenly split with about half of Republican. Same economy is generally fair and half of the economy saying unfairly early favors these special interests whereas Democrats overwhelmingly say that the economy is not fair. okay so Brass tacks your who's got the power so we asked Americans who they thought had too much power and influence in today's economy and about eight and ten or more American said that politicians Titians corporations and people who are wealthy had too much power we also had majority saying health insurance companies banks and other financial institutions and tech companies had too much cower Let me ask you then who doesn't have the power or is parallel. I suppose another way to put it. Yeah we asked to people. Apple felt did not have enough power and Americans pointed to people who were poor the middle class and interestingly small businesses. Yes say more about that because when I read this in small all businesses came up I was. That's the thing that got me on the phone with you to be honest. Yeah I'm and one interesting thing was we saw a partisan divide and how Democrats and Republicans on looked at a number of these groups. Republicans were less likely than Democrats to say that large corporations had too much power but when it came to small businesses Democrats and Republicans were largely in agreement that that small businesses did not have enough power. Today's economy. So what else do people need to know about this. I mean as they read this and they hear that you know seven ten people think the economy is is unbalanced. Silence shall we say instead of rigged. What are they supposed to do that information? It's hard to say What people are supposed to do? In this survey we did sort of dive into what Americans think about economic comic inequality in general and while most Americans say that there's too much economic inequality in the country. They didn't rank particularly highly as an issue. So it's hard to sort they how that will play out Raquel Nick. She's a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center. Thanks a lot. I appreciate your time. Thanks for having me
