"And storms on Monday with a high of seventies Make that a high of 90 right now it is 77 degrees. DFW Airport. Nobody be AP News Time is 6 22. Where does the House stand on the infrastructure bill? And why did North Texas Congressman Michael Burgess vote in favor of a bill to remove the Confederate statues from the Capitol building? Dave Williams and Amy Schade. Rob spoke with the congressman and pose those questions and more last week. All right. Let's start with the infrastructure negotiations. The president's making It sound like everyone's on the same page. Are you on the same page? No. Uh, look, there's three moving parts. There's a current expiring surface transportation bill, which is the one we're hearing on the House floor. Right now, there is a larger civil so called gang of 10. Senate deal that they're trying to work out. And then, of course, President Biden and the Progressives have this enormous, uh, spending bill that is the so called infrastructure or American whatever plan But look, the surface transportation build in some way, shape or form will have to pass because that is spending the money that's been collected in the highway Trust fund. It likely will require an infusion from the general Treasury, which is problematic, but nevertheless that is going to be approved in some way shape. Performed before the end of the fiscal year, which is September 30th. Or there will be an extension, which has happened many times over the past several years. In fact, I think we're running on an extension now. So the actual surface transportation bill They want to put a lot of climate stuff in there a lot of money that has been collected from ratepayers and gas taxpayers they want to use for electric charging stations in California. I'm not sure that's the highest and best use of our money when we need lane Miles in the state of Texas, But those are the those are the arguments are going on in the house right now, whether or not spend Highway trust fund money on art him. Transit stations swells of the kinds of Arguments going on. Right now. Most of us on the Republican side say Let's be practical. We've got only so much money to spend. We know we've got transportation. These let's try to meet those than the broader package. The pain, the sky stuff that I like as I like to refer to it. I don't think even though the president has said he's got a he's got a bipartisan compromise in the Senate. I'm not sure that was actually ever gets up off the deck. The scary thing is, they could move that with 50 votes over in the Senate, plus the vice president under a procedure known as budget reconciliation, and that's how they would spend trillions and trillions of dollars in the name of transportation. But on stuff that is absolutely unrelated. Yeah, from the outset, we've wondered How can you call something like climate change the minimum wage and all that. How can you call that stuff? Infrastructure and and ideas to to help people in need? You know, medically or with food? I mean, why Why are we always looking at the bills that have been That have rolled everything in the kitchen into one, you know, ridiculous souffle. Well, it's because legislation is hard. That doesn't mean we shouldn't do it The right way. I believe that we should. And I believe smaller bills give more more representatives would enhance more of the country an opportunity to weigh in on stuff, and I think it leads to a better legislative product. But you're you're right. You're absolutely right, David. Uh Things get bigger and bigger and bigger, so that everyone's back gets scratched in some way, and then it gets impossible to stop. But I don't think the you know, I guess purely on party politics that larger Biden infrastructure so called infrastructure bill that's a couple of trillion dollars on top of the trillion dollar that have already been Smith. But look, we got another worry right now, and that's inflation and it really is coming roaring back. I don't care what the Fed says. I don't care what drum, Powell says. Inflation go by a two by four it at Home Depot. Tell me that doesn't cost a lot more than until a year ago, we're talking with North Texas Congressman Michael Burgess want to ask you about the removal of the Confederate statues in Washington? You were one of five Texas Republicans. To vote in favor of removing those statues. I was a little surprised to see your name on that list until I saw your reasoning. Why can you explain why you made that decision to vote that way? Sure. Well, actually, it's the same decision I made a year ago. And And this is something that Speaker of the house brings up periodically, and the whole idea is to box Republicans in and make them be seen as a party of racial insensitivity. But in reality where the parties emancipation, we are the party that brought you the The removal of that abhorrent institution that was present in this country over 150 years ago, where the party that brought you the first African American representatives in the House and Senate. So why would I defend Democrats who want to? I mean, these are all Democrats of the statues that they're talking about Removing That's Congressman Michael Burgess. "Relief package recently passed by Congress remains in limbo as President Trump insists it be amended. W B A. P. S. Clayton Devil says Republicans and Democrats failed to reach unanimous consent on a key part of the legislation on Christmas Eve. The covert relief package awaiting President Trump's signature isn't the bill either side of the island vision, but it's relief nonetheless, in a time when many Americans are struggling financially amid the ongoing pandemic. The legislation was combined with a spending measure that President Trump said focus too much on foreign countries. It really is a disgrace. He pushed back against proposed $600 direct payments to Americans and asked for $2000 checks. $900 billion package provides hardworking taxpayers with only $600 each in relief, Pampers. And not enough money is given to small business. And it was Republicans who said during negotiations that 2000 was too much. But with President Trump's words, House Democrats called for unanimous consent to boost the check amounts in the session held Christmas Eve morning. It failed to get consent from Republicans who in turn as Democrats to bend on the foreign aid section of the bill. That didn't happen either. "I think that it's probably still advantage. Trump. I expected to carry Texas by three or four point, but I also expect him to lose nationally. What do you Why do you say that? Well, uh, they're they're just a massive amount of information out there Polling in particular on Texas, but also on on the rest of the country and in Texas. There had been a couple of Poles. Most recently, The Dallas Morning News and UT Tyler had a poll that had that had Biden by three or four points in Texas. I just don't believe that most of the other polls show Trump to be up narrowly meaning 234 points and I I think that calm Paris, Texas by three or four points But there are pockets all over Texas that are far more competitive than they used to be. Most of those are in the suburbs that the ring of suburbs around the The northern part of Dallas and southwest of Houston, Fort Bend County, Williamson County that sort of thing where Democrats are much more competitive. So while Trump I think will carry Texas on Tuesday I think Democrats will pick up two or three US House seats, and they're going to make a run at the nine seats. They need to take majority control of the Texas House. I'm not sure how close still get But they'll pick up a few teaching The Texas House nine is a little bit of a stretch, but it's going to be a very mixed bag on election day in Texas for both parties. We all know that the polls were wrong in 2016. What makes us think that they should be right this time around. Well of every time. So just think about yourself. If you did something wrong, you try to correct that you'd try to figure out what you did wrong and make adjustments, Which is what The pollsters have done so it's unlikely that they'll be wrong in the same way they could be wrong in in 2020 a CZ well, but they won't be wrong in the same way and they won't be wrong in the same places. So my assumption is that on election night if you want to know what's going on Watch Florida if Trump holds Florida Then you want to stay up and see what happens in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. And if he's got two out of those three, then you look to Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, where Biden is up in all of those states, but a Biden were to take Two out of three of Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania. You, Khun, Go to bed. Does. The rest of the country is pretty much divided between blue and red on. Biden has some advantages in places that Democrats have not normally had advantages. Arizona being the most obvious case where My guess is up by three or four points. Arizona has been a Republican stronghold for a long time. Last thing I'd say is that Hillary Clinton was up by about half a cz much A CZ. Biden is up right now. Back in 2016. So in a race where Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 2.5 Trump could one win the Electoral college. If Biden is up six or seven points, there is no path through the electoral College for Himto win. Alright, quickly count. I think it's arguably even more important than the presidential race would be the U. S. Senate. How do you see that breaking down? Yeah, I think corn and is re elected to the U. S senate. He's been very subtly up by about eight points. Their was a fascinating story in AA. And I guess Well, yeah, Dallas Morning is this morning about the amount of money, race and Senate races around the country and usually Texas? Incumbent senators and challengers can raise a lot of money that they were right in the middle of the pack. Far more money being raised in South Carolina and Iowan and unexpected places like that. I think that corner and hold that seat fairly comfortable. Yeah, But what about the Senate? Over all the makeup of Congress? Is it if they if the Republicans lose the White House, where they also going to lose the Senate Yeah, that's going to be that's going to be very close. I do think it It is more likely than not. The Democrats take control of the Senate and the states that you look at for that. Would be Susan Collins in Maine. The Arizona seat that Mark Kelly Cabral, Gabby Gifford's husband is contesting is very likely to go to to the Democrats. North Carolina Thom Tillis has been down by two or three points if they lose that, and Biden winds Kamala Harris within preside. In the Senate. You would be tied, but I think you also watch Joanie Ernst in Iowa. Very, very close Race. Iowa should be Republican. Hard to know how that one is going to go. There's a woman named Greenfield, who is running very close to Jody aren't so it's It's going to be a nail biter. I expect Democrats control it by one or two seats at the end of the day. Maybe a few news time is coming up on 6 28. We'll have another check of our traffic and weather in just a moment on the W. P A P. Sunday morning news, the Randy Williams and then more news and sports of the day with Dennis Martin. This is Mark 11. This election may be extraordinarily close. And so I don't want people to get himself. You know, I could have. What if it's too late? It's too late. Mark.

Aging in Place with Dr. Randall Williams of WellSaid
"Hey there it is a pleasure to have you on the podcast. That are Randolph Randall. Williams thank you for joining us. Hope we can take a moment here and first of all. Just introduce yourself to the listeners. Terry Good Morning. It's really great to be here. I'm Randy Williams am a physician by background. have a long-standing track record. I guess in the voice technology arena a applied to healthcare. So it's really fun to come and talk about that with you today and with your audience More recently or last year and a half two years Myself and Michael have been working on Applying voice technology to the challenges of staying healthy and active and independent as one gets older. And so we're doing that with a company called while said and we'll be happy to talk to you a little bit about that this morning as well. Wonderful just a little bit more of your background in terms of being a medical doctor. What kind of medicine do you practice and can Tusla but more about your practice? Yeah sure I trained as a cardiologist as a heart failure and transplant specialist In the Mid Nineteen Ninety S was recruited Here in Chicago to Northwestern University to A build a program for a heart failure which is Many of your listeners know is a chronic disease and it's very prevalent One of the things that I had the opportunity to do In my very earliest Kerr. Stage was to create a continuum of care for people with chronic disease. And that was something that was Informed by my Training experienced in the managed care world so it seen some of the failings of the healthcare system and how people with chronic diseases really fell through. The cracks. Were often readmitted to the hospital on -sarily and frankly lacked some of the systems and support That were needed. Stay a healthy in and out of the hospital. So we built a program Initially that provided resources both Obviously in the hospital setting but then in the home and community setting dwell and we had we had to knit all that together to be able to To help people in San top aware their challenges were arising sort of outside of the normal visibility of the healthcare system. And so we talk. We turned a two voice technology. Clear back then and Started with Interactive Voice Response and built a an application that had allowed Heart failure patients to report in every morning on how they were feeling and how they were doing. What vital signs were whether they're taking over Madison? Simple things actually. But more importantly it gave us in our staff daily visibility into how they were doing and whether there are any changes that needed support or additional services and low behold we are able to prevent you know about fifty sixty percent of hospitalizations in that group of people and That led to an opportunity for us to start exploring other chronic diseases and see if the model could apply elsewhere so we moved on and did diabetes and Lung Disease of Zima chronic asthma. Things like that And then I'm in early two thousands Low Behold Um had an opportunity to Help the US Senate Think through how they would like to see the Medicare program Adapt these kinds of approaches to save money and improve outcomes for the Medicare population Which led in turn to Taking what we had developed in terms of our technology at northwestern and began commercializing that as our first startup Back in two thousand and four I in two thousand nine After maintaining a day a week and clinic It became pretty clear that it was tough to negotiate contracts in between Patient visits and I was really Sort of doing a disservice to people to try to keep my foot into canoes and so had to make the choice to give up my Clinical practice. But you know it's interesting as Dr Amok Vanessa Miss Patient Care and the answer. Is You know for sure right. I mean I love interacting with people ella of Helping others and And fortunately many of those things have continued on in my entrepreneurial. Career what. I don't miss so much or some of the failings of broken healthcare system that really needs transformation and so Philosophically I just had to make the choice about where I wanted to try to help that. Transformation happen and And really enjoyed and thrived in Some of the business model innovation work that it takes to really transform IT industry I'm hopeful that over time my career will leave a A testimony of having supported the transformation of healthcare in a in a meaningful way. That's great that's great so I mean that's a very interesting background because when you talk about Ivy. Are you doing this longtime ago way? Before a lot of these people have entered the voice space as we know it today with the voice assistance but now in your latest iteration with this well said maybe we can talk a little bit now about that that that transformation so you went from the. It are and now you've got this company well said and what does that look like how how did how did that come about. And what does the product do? Yeah well let me start with how we got here. And then I'll tell you more about our company what we're up to but You know as we were Growling and and Building out Our initial company called Pharos Innovations We really started to hear about and see voice assistant technologies starting to emerge and Every holiday we would hear about how The Google assistant in Alexa devices. Were flying off the shelf and we we sort of scratched our head as a management team and said Hey. Wait a SEC. Maybe we ought to be thinking about bolting this technology on our Ivr Platform Armas another user interface opportunity and it had a lot of compelling reasons why we should do that but there were two constraints that we were struggling with one. Constraint was That the devices at the time were not set up for her. A compliant Interactions is that we had We had that challenge and then the other challenge. Frankly was that As a as a enabler of health care We are often at arm's length from the actual users of technology and that had some real disadvantages as well if you're going to iterating learn. I'm as as those of us know who are Into our lean startup technology or methodologies. You really need to talk to your customers you willing to talk to your users and understand what's working what's not again given the complexities of having worked with the senior population for a long time We knew that this technology would bring its own sets of barriers and challenges that we needed to understand how to overcome in order to do that. We had to get in front of older adults

"Google, Stitcher. Spotify a recent review travel? Buff wrote a long review really love the concept of this podcast. Interesting to hear the stories of people who've explored so much in here. The thoughts and places I've never heard of before do after admit it gets a little one note after while with people saying the same things to the same questions all of the time. Would be good to see some of the shows feature. More people with unique angles like DNA Busta Montes dancing goal LGBT travelers someone from a country with a week passpart so many stories and angles to hear or even better to hear interviews of travelers that are chasing the goal of every country. But only have fifty to one hundred visits in have them interviews from the middle of their struggle would be great to hear from people striving for it. In addition to those have done it or pretty much done. Still a great podcast. See I don't only read perfect reviews travel buff. Thanks for the feedback to point out a couple of things I've interviewed many people in the fifty two hundred countries category. When you have a chance checkout, George Casseus. Randy Williams, Rick shaver, Mario hardy in Petra from today in terms of unique goals or unique challenges check out David Lee. Langan who has mailing a postcard from every country Thor who's traveling to every country without fine. Anthony, William who's traveling to the mall in the wheelchair. I've also interviewed a couple of people from the LGBT community as well. But their sexual orientation was not a major part of their travel. And of course, I ended in a couple of travelers with weaker passports. Take a listen to pong from Thailand or an art me from Russia and Denise started off with the Cuban passport there now sixty nine podcast. So there's a lot of amazing and diverse travelers to check in with. I'll see if I can mix up the questions of bit more to get some varieties. Well, remember to start off your new year with an official counting countries shirt. Check the Winker go to Amazon, and as I mentioned before in the.
