"What does he hit me up with? Okay, So the one thing that's as I'm reading our select Channel Santa and it's a good point. Sant there wanted to see Kershaw silences critics more emphatically. As did I. The difference between me and Mike? Is that I realized that in the year 2020 you are less in control of the circumstances. Then you were like in 1980. You know, Tommy Lasorda comes out to take out I don't know. You know me? I don't even know Fernando could speak English. I'm not trying to be funny there. I really don't know if he did speak great English, more Mexico. I don't know. But like you take Burt Hooten. I don't know anybody from the seventies that were 81. And bird who's got a better chance to win that Tommy John. Better chance to win that Skip. I'm good. Then you know Blake Snell, who's got no chance to win because it's already predetermined. So Sanders point And we could we could get into this a little bit here is that you know some of the great pitchers of all time. Randy Johnson. Great postseason moments. Greg Maddux. Not that many. Actually, Pedro some good, some really bad by the way. Kirk Gibson, October Beast Roger Clemens some really good, some really bad. It's kind of a mixed bag like I feel like you. Just lump it all of it. Not all the old time greats were October demons. No exploring, and I don't think they need to be in I mean, if you're looking for that emphatic moment for t justify Clayton Kershaw's greatness than then I'm sorry way want to say like exactly Clayton Kershaw. And I think we have the sound on this, You know, talking about what it means to when the wind is violently when a championship It was. I mean, that's what it's all about the him he doesn't care if he silenced his postseason critics and why would he? He's got a championship ring, and it was part of he was part of a great team that should have, you know, probably one more. Maybe they will win more. Who knows? But that That that that accomplishment you can never, ever ever ever take away from him, And that's really all that matters. I've been saying, you know, World Series champs in my head over and over again, just to see if it'll sink in and Just so you know, I can't put it in a word yet. I'm just so so very thankful to be a part of this group of guys. And that's what matters. You know what I mean? It was the the narrative that we want to talk about with Clayton Kershaw it in the day. Who cares? He's kind of ring right now, But I think he cared up until last night. I think he could get into the thing. I don't think I only cared Is the right word. I think he was aware of it. No, Take care. Yeah, because cared if a PT, you know this, you go out and you play a game and you do it the best you can. It's not like he's out there, you know, messing up on purpose. But to think that he wasn't so motivated to change the direction of that energy that that negative energy toward his legacy. I think it's rolled him. Yeah, I really do. So what changed this year from previous? Nothing change. He just I believe he really now Khun exult that exhale in the in the accomplishment Now it loosens him up. I believe that it was I think he's always been lose. I think he was just managed better like so let's let's let's not forget that there was there were moments Clayton Kershaw as much as we people want to bash him about his postseason failures. Even with those per season failures with his accomplishments. He's still one of the greatest postseason pitchers of all time. You know what I mean? What I want? I'm saying, even with his failures you did. You put him put him right there. Next to his accomplishments. He's still one of the greatest postseason pitchers of all time. Right. And now maybe one of the altar, not post E one of the all time well, like I'm all time, best singers of all time, but he, but he's had some great postseason moments. Also, for sure, right, he's done. He's got 10 games of giving up one run in victory. There's Clemens and mathematics and not automatic. Clemens and Smalls. I forget the other two. He's tied with its its seventh of all time with that, that that number. Koufax might be Kovacs, but he's done some epic things in the postseason. He's just never won a ring, and he's had some epic failures. And so when I talk about how he's managed, this is an idea. This was the idea that people have been putting out their free for years. "Tiki and you don't take the vehicle nature of the way we per speed perceived. Sporting icons, both in the playing sense, but obviously also in the coaching and managerial sense, Right. I want to point out something about Dave Roberts and the point that that I made earlier and and nobody really vehemently disagreed that Clayton Kershaw was an all timer before this championship was punctuated. But now you know you have all those lines, The MVP the multiple Cy Youngs, blah, blah, blah. Five times are a champ, etcetera, etcetera. A World Series champion, and in the eyes of some will now catapult him where I believe he rightfully belonged anyway. You know, top 10 12 pitcher of all time. And some modern names that are on that list for me, you know, without going back to the black and white pictures paid no order. Pedro's there for me. Seaver's there for me. Greg Maddux is there for me, Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens, and that's where it ends for. For my as I comprised my old time pitching a list, but About Dave Roberts, right? Think about the narrative with Dave Roberts before he gets his first World Series championship. Dave Roberts was on the brink of getting fired. If they don't win this world, Siri's he really might get fired and if they don't want to fire him In the aftermath of a pandemic season. Then you'd be fired next year if they don't win the World Series, And suddenly you go from that to Wow. Look at Dave Roberts Back in 2019 106 games. Wow! Back in 2017. He won 100 for games. He's got three penance is the World Series champion. He goes from a guy who was almost on the firing squad line, too. He's another world. Siri's away from being a hole. The Famer. Yeah, No, it's crazy. How Winning a championship can just change your perspective on on somebody and again, it's It is unfair because he has been such a good skip. You don't know. You don't win 100, plus games and get to the You know the the world. Syriza's often as he did with this with the right, like attitude, the right demeanor and he's a professional. Skip made you feel it. You see it, But when you keep fallin short, you get there and you keep fallen short. Then obviously there's something something wrong. And now he's he's he's erased that it's no, it's it will never be a conversation point with Dave Roberts anymore about not being able to win the big one not dissimilar to Clayton Kershaw, because that was it was kind of the same thing. Now. The greatness of Clayton Kershaw wasn't in wasn't up for debate. The postseason issues were up for debate. But the greatness of Clayton Kershaw wasn't up for a debate, like the greatness of Dave Roberts was up for debate because a sous manager You gotta win. You know a za player? Yeah, you can. You could mask it by being elite, You know, I mean, winning Cy Young's doing things in the regular season that we always talk about. But as a manager, you better win the big one. Otherwise, there's always going to be that that thought that you you just couldn't pull through. Well, you say you could mask it, but I would challenge you and I would say it depends on the support. James Harden can't mask it. Yeah, well, I'm talking about baseball. No, I know, But I'm saying that there's a huge difference just to point that out from Yeah, I mean, if James if James Harden Ends up winning. Yeah, You're probably right because basketball is it's so it's an individual came even though it is a team was on it, and it's a two person game. I look at it like if you have two guys, then you should be able to win a championship type of thing. Where is baseball? You could be one of the greatest players of all time. Top two or three even and never get a chance to win a World Series. Looking in the NFL is the same way. Dan Marino's one of the best players to ever play the position. He's certainly the best in his era ATT quarterback he played in one championships. It's so much about all the other Like teammates, and it's circumstances in certain circumstances and other sports other than basketball basketball. If you are like the man, you better win a championship. Yes, the only problem with the circumstances They get blurry, and they eventually evaporate over time. Like you know, a guy the players who had their championship blocked by Jordan, You know, it's not just doing its Reggie Miller as well as few others, too. Barkley Thiss the that will. I mean, for those of us who are still around to say it in years, years years, it will be said, But you know, the circumstances of the pursue will get, you know, old and gray wither away. If they blend in, they're not important. Did you win that you lose? Even like what? Marino, you know, Think about this. Like they He had a couple of great wide receivers. But, you know, I never really had a great running attack. Never had a great diva like you Almost forget about that. You know, Andi, it's a shame because the circumstances are paramount. And and highly influential on the outcome. And, you know, even as a manager. I mean, think about this. Joe Torry. Joe Torey was a middling manager for a long time loved he was a broadcast or matter fact. You know, a little revitalization with cardinals, but with the Mets they were terrible. He got lost 100 games pretty much every year. Ah, lice renaissance with the Braves in the early eighties..

"Mlb The show. Because it's something that clearly a lot of guys are starting to get involved in and more guys are getting interested in opening twitch accounts Lucas Jr Alito Chicago. White Sox. He just opened up a twitter account. After after seeing Carlos robot enjoy it so kind of thing is is starting to grow and I think guys starting to get a sense of how not only for for for players to connect with fans. But it's also a way for them to build their brands and you know build for a life outside of baseball as well. Yeah you could see it like in the regular workout regimen for some of these guys Blake Snell lifts weights on Wednesday. has a bullpen session. On Thursday Has an off day on on Friday Saturday Sunday. He plays video games with fans during the course of the game. I mean baseball. Baseball's almost uniquely positioned to to. You know there's so much downtime. For a lot less players they can just sit in dugout and talk and you can get a sense of what that dugout chatter light. I mean I think it's I think it's a really good idea. Honestly now that I think about it twice to to Michael Guys who aren't playing in the game having a starter on his off day just chat with fans might be really good wages to get a get a different players and I think create a kind of a more uniquely intimate baseball experience. Yeah one hundred percent you did that in the clubhouse that that that would be pretty cool. He brings people into that that atmosphere. That was the amazing. All Right Jim. Thanks for doing this. They have bus really appreciated luxury. Walters manage twenty years in the big leagues. Fifteen hundred fifty one career wins in bucket. Bring YOU IN A. I'm excited about this conversation. Because they've known you for a long time. But as I said the Aaron Boone when we had him on a couple of weeks ago I never had asked him about that home run he hit in two thousand three AOL CS. Because I worked with him. I didn't want to be like the green fly. You know the fan boy asking questions so this kind of gives me an opportunity. Ask You questions like that. Don't ask me about the anything. That's really painful. Please buster. It's part of. It's always a back story. Those things you know so many things. I wish I'd asked people on the way. Never feel like you're putting them out. Well I appreciate you taking the time and joining us. I storytelling one when we're out without baseball games A few years ago I think your last year when you were managing the Orioles I I remember how you invited Dion Sanders to come to cannon yards. And I didn't realize up until that time that you guys are very close and that you know. Then I've made sense. Dion was in the Yankees Organization when you were in the Yankees Organization. Tell me about him and how you guys always connected well beyond you know. He came from somewhere area of the country. There was a real connection theon personality of the football player and the way he projected himself as a baseball player. Two totally different guys. He wasn't primetime in baseball and Very Smart Guy He's still lives here in Dallas. We is son over at Soda. Messes we sit together sometime at basketball games but Beyond that group we had a group in Albany New York in the Eastern League that won that year and beyond was probably the most popular teammates. They're not because he's Tom COM. Just the way he treated everybody was he was just one of the guys. He understood that the difference between but I remember calling him to tell him he was going to the big leagues and he thought I was telling him to go. He's going to AAA and I called him at home one night. I said it's girlfriend. John say whatever answer the phone I said? Hey can I speak to be honest? Theon would eat beans pork chops and skull potatoes. Almost every night loved him and he finally he finally gets to the phone. That's what's up. He goes I'm just eating. I said listen They want to call you up. They want you to go up and it goes fuck you know I. I love the guys here man. We're GONNA win this year. I think and subway triple as kind of a lateral move. I assume say here and I said you don't understand you're going to New York. And he dropped the phone. I hear him going baby baby coming here. Pick up the phone talked about. It was one of the it was one of the great send ups. Oh I can't I couldn't hardly get him back on the phone but A lot of people didn't get dion and I enjoyed getting things about him. He was a fast guy. I ever had not even close. Think about your fast. It's got and there's another year there. He could actually outrun the baseball. It was breathtaking to watch him. Run triple out. It was. It was worth play being there and just the things that you can do. Tell you through. Well he had a lot of power. That people didn't know if you've been full-time baseball sky was the limit he was. He was a special talent. You Know Buck. I'm so thrilled to hear. You say that because when I have friends family or if I do stuff with fans and people ask me. What's the coolest thing that I ever saw a baseball field? I said watching Dion Sanders. Senate triple. That was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen but for people talk about stuff in the big leagues that I'm remember the most. It might have been coach and third base for an inside the park. Home Run Dion Sanders. Look it up sometime Bo Jackson him. We're going back and forth before we play Kansas City about. He couldn't tackle and beyond with say Akkad out running. And this guy was smartness. Got What smart about time they got to New York. It was on. I mean it was on. We weren't very good. We hadn't scored a run in a month and the first two times a Bo his whole months and the little down the Doug because you know it was beau versus beyond. I kind of walk bombs to come home and I got a Lotta game. Let's go well. He hits the ball in the right. Centerfield and Bo Dives Fort Separate. The shoulder vouch for the year by the way ball. Rolls to the fence comes around second and it is beautiful. I mean there's dirt Flying Jerry. Curls are working and he gets to third and I think those Bianca WanNa headed back to the Infield just thinking. It was a sure. Stand UP TRIPLE AND MCFARLAND was out in front of the plate and I start pumping and like I said. We haven't scorn awhile. It's two outs and beyond guessing another gear. He looks at me like this crazy. Guy's GonNa send me and I gotta say Dirt Meryl's Home Played on par and the ball comes in. He's out by maybe Tennessee. I'm running down the line with him. Obviously behind him and the ball short hops in hits off McFarland's chest. Dion has to go up in the air over the top McFarland. Get his hand back on the plate before he can retrieve the ball and tagging bang. Bang safe and I gotTa tell you the place went crazy crate. It was I. I got to go back to third base. I'm going back in the dug-out Denman's found migos brother. He said if you lost your mind what you doing I said de Vaux showing up out there. You gotta see it you know. Take it back man. That was fun. That was sound blaster. Yeah that I was. That's great I was GonNa ask you if you want to ask. You set a ask you about the decision to send him in that situation Yeah he he. He would have absolutely been amazing. I WanNa ask you about working for George Steinbrenner. What was of course People know that behind the scenes. He could be so tough. You know all those years going through managers. What was the most angry that he ever got it. You Oh Jeez Buster While you know I think he would. He would try to get it through coaches. He knew that my sauce fought would for coaches who are good coaches and doing their job. Release reason why I left. New York was over for four coaches and he wanted to fire but I if he would live through I was lucky to have jean-michel deflected a lot of those things but he got a little easier to work for With every manager I think you know I think Joe got a softer guy. I think the guy behind Joe got a software guy was I you know there were some some very private moments where he would just hammer away and there. It was just like you know anything that was obvious or he had told you about happening I remember he came in one morning early. One morning. Brian butterfill now. We're going to do in the schedules. It's been seven o'clock in the morning and he came in all he said. Was you out in call butter by name. And so of course you know clete boyer gets a big name placard and puts it over. Brian's Locker W. e. new name where you out but you know there was a certain there was a certain Fraternity and Camaraderie of guys. You know you Kinda took it. You know it was coming your way. He made sure he didn't crack somebody else. Enter IN OTHER WORDS. The pitching coach. You don't say the INFIELDER OUTTA position or they've made a bunch of errors behind your Fisher to try to support your yourself because now you have dragged the infield coach into so there was no. You're going up the elevator late at night. Form of meetings. Everybody knows. Somebody's got a bullseye on their back. And you just need to wear it take like a man 'cause no it'll be somebody else the next time and guys would get back on the elevator and pat each other on the pet. The guy on the back of that war at that time and it was part of the job description. I understood it when I took the job that he was going to be. Part of the job description. But you know you can only take so much. If if he knew that he could run all over. You're going to be there at some point. You hadn't expand all right. Tell us about Don Mattingly in the nineteen ninety five playoffs. I was not covering the team at that time. But Michael K of course longtime broadcast for the Yankees. Tell stories about about Donnie ramping. Up for that series knowing that that would be it started about three weeks earlier. You know we had probably one of the best September's and Gangqi history to get in the playoffs. We we had the replacement camp and all. This stuff is awful Donnie. I'd taken a lot of grief about continued to play Donnie hitting third. Because he was he said but to sixty with not much power numbers in it but I knew his back was killing and also knew that our our players just funneled and and set off him so much. You meant so much to our club. This being on the field. Donnie came in one day. So that's I say I'm going forward either. You not hit me thirty. I said listen. Don't tell me where my hitch in the batting order. I he said You I'm going for it. I said what do you mean? He said I'm going to start talking my back and this and that whatever and eat it blows out doesn't blow out. He said we're not getting the playoffs. And let's start acting like a first baseman of the Yankees. So he went for. I am their eleven o'clock in the morning with all the stuff he did with his back. Just try to get and I gotTa tell you buster for two or three weeks it was don mattingly all I was like. Oh my God every swing you might be his last and he put on a show in the playoffs but also remember coming back from Seattle. He came up set down. You know you're talking about three games on that turf out there to the buck. I'm done just once. You know I want you and stick the no before also even gets here that I'm done. My boys need me at home. He had some situation at home. Back won't let me do what I need to do. I don't I the surgery I can't. I'm not sure about it. And so him telling us that. Ukraine-Bound Boeing Jet Crashes in Iran, Killing All on Board

"One of things that went on last night aside from the the missile strikes was this Ukrainian airliner and in the middle of all of this stuff this Ukrainian passenger plane is shot down as it's leaving the Iranian airport and it crashes and everybody on board dies so again I ask the poll question lightning do you what what do you think happened I was like that was an accident coincidence or did Iran take that thing down in seventy two percent of you think Iran took it down why would they take it down they give me the the reasons why I have no idea why they would take it like you don't know what's the pros of that just because you know it well so let's break it down this way one did they take it down on purpose the reason why I ask that is you've seen this conspiracy theory right the theory is or some have posited that a ran was nervous about a response and missiles coming in so either somebody had a jittery trigger finger in set up like an interceptor in hit the plane or they launched a bunch of these missiles and one of them hit the plane on the way up okay now I can't yeah right the odds on that I'm more likely to believe that then they did it on purpose but even that seems very very unlikely the odds are that are like when Randy Johnson hit that bird when he was pitch in well yeah that's what I think I mean only the audit of the bird just disintegrated because Randy Johnson through that hard it's unbelievable that that but that did happen but I don't think that's what happened here I have no idea what happened at Ukrainian plane it's a awful story obviously over a hundred and seventy people are dead but what happened originally did this story that we were getting right off the bat was they thought it was mechanical okay but now people are claiming that based on the debris and the way that stuff was ripped open they think from it I'm actually looking at images of it right now on TV I mean it's awful but it is reported there would have had they think it would have almost had to have been struck by something in order to to end like that so again why would they do here's where you'll know from Iran yesterday lightning right the reef goes on TV and says you know we're gonna have a very measured response that's going to be by the box and then when there is a response he says it this is our response by the way literally by the book but then they shoot down a passenger plane to in the middle of that why would they do that if there that night either to go which is going to kill some people I don't care and I'm not gonna be Iranians well then you're not sending out the tweet to say this is the U. when code number that we're following in order to do the thing and please don't hurt as we don't want you don't send out we don't want any trouble also we took down a passenger plane what would what Iran team from taking down that plane it makes zero sense but what the hell did happen then

What...Just...Happened?

"Dozo with Sunday it baseball's Jessica and does and Jess Wow that game last night was insane that's the kind of name I got to tell you do the post-game work and you go back to the hotel and you're staring at the walls in the hotel room wide awake because you have so much his rental in and I was what about you because eventually I did go back to sleep but you had to get up like three hours later to get up this morning yeah it was up at five and then you write everything and I know now I have such an appreciation for writers because I like to give all of because I know that everyone that I'm working with this morning didn't watch the game and so I basically the right everything that I feel like we're the highlights of things I want to get into all the stuff I need them to look up graphics Oh that's put me up until one two in the morning and the I'm upset if I walk into work and getting ready to go so I'm a morning person it's been the nights that like that's why I'm so excited about this game six because I'll tell you what there's been a couple of games this world series where I'm like fighting sleep in the sixth seventh innings. I've only got a few hours this one I mean buster there were times I was jumping on my bed in my hotel room liking the TV Blake I'm sure my neighbors the hotel do not appreciate I'm like come on the world series game six you should be watching it was it was a nutty gate for the most part we'll put it this way in the first five games the world series there was one lead change last night we had two plus all the craziness for that game distinguish itself from the rest of the world series and I've got a laundry list of stuff to get tune we'll get into all of what happened last night but let's start with this I thought you know Dave Martinez what an emotional night like he goes absolutely nuts during the course of the game we're in the seventh inning stretch and he looked down the field and all of a sudden I see Dave Martinez being restrained by one of his coaches and he's going after the umpires he winds up getting a in our life by the Japan and their life go ahead the one who's restoring him he's gotTa winds up being rejected first manager in twenty three years to be objected from a world he's game and then after the game you get knuckleheads like me going in there and ask you know the right questions about how he felt in that moment and what did you think about the call I Dave Martinez handled it perfectly because he's like you know what I don't WanNa get any that I don't want to talk about that and he said it respectfully he said I I understand but you know what it's all about game seven in so many words and that's exactly what I thought he should have done in that moment considering what the outcome was there was no reason for him to relive all the details game unless they lose like I feel like and not that you want to relive it anyway and you WanNa take the high road but there was a moment there and this is for the people who weren't watching the game live but when you're watching it live during the entire time empires had the headsets on that that the showing trae Turner in the out just the emotions completely I mean honestly watching the broadcast they were bleeping out every other word was coming out of that dugout because it was so much emotion it felt like that something we're gonNA WE'RE GONNA be talking about this moment for years because in that moment it felt like the nationals are gonNA lose this game and this is why it's GonNa be because of this so I think Dave Martinez would have been a completely different person had anthony rendon day income and hit that home run I think then he would have been a lot more but when you win the game and it's like why go back in blow up that entire call a hundred percent and that's what I thought was really smart by him to not go back and relive that because they won the game and they force game seven and game seven will be started by Max Scherzer who chess on Sunday comes walking stiffly into the interview room in front of reporters he When he was answering questions he wasn't turning his neck he was sitting in his wheelchair and turning the whole swivel chair to talk to reporters and he was so down he gets a cortisone shot which pitchers talk about is being such essentially a miracle drug and then yesterday when we walk into the Ballpark here in Houston he's in catching the outfield and goes to Intel's Day Martinez I'm ready to go and you get the feeling that this could be something that could fire or at the players I asked David about that before the game yesterday about you know whether or not the players might rally around this any mentioned that time when Max fouled the ball off he was on face broke his nose and the next day Texan picture instead I'm good to go and he started that day with the black is Dave said that got the players fired up I gotta believe tonight there'll be so much adrenaline Max on the mound especially because I mean from that press conference buster and and for those of us that know him he was devastated Leanne devastated on Sunday that he could not help his team and I felt like it worked in the reverse like he could not hide the emotion of how much he felt like he was leading his team down and because of that and not because that's the sole reason they lost by any means at all but I felt like the team reacted to his devastation and not just him not pitching the overall vibe that he was giving like I feel awful that I can't pitch in game that I'm supposed to I think it works in the reverse for game seven because he is battled on everything he can the cortisone shot I think my only concern was shirt tonight is we've seen in his starts in this postseason him go one hundred ten and plus pitches how much length can't he give this team now the good thing is you know Daniel Hudson Sean deal those two pitchers you can use anybody pretty much out of the bullpen and there is more options for Dave Martinez out of the bullpen but what we've seen is they need length from these starters how much length can shares her bring your stuff was just flat from the get-go the guys more pitches than anybody in baseball this year over four thousand he just he just didn't have it and I think it was because he he's tired at the end of a long year and right that's the question about Max tonight on the other side we're GonNa see Zach ranking who's also looked tiredness postseason and I would assume that he's he followed by Garrett Cole I talked to Garyk before game six and asked him about how his ability with game seven was something he was handling because of the flight on the day last turn it had a similar situation where normally I would pen on day two but since we were flying I decided to it settled in DC and throw my pen on day three which for this week sets up pretty much the same exact way and I felt really good last week on day three so I'm just taking the same routine did last week to prepare for the bullpen as I'm doing this week to prepare for possibly having to pitch game seven yes I think he's GonNa wind up pitching like innings four through six tonight what do you think yeah I think so I think this is something that you definitely see and I think just for the royalva nats I mean to be able to get to that grinky you know the point that they want to be able to do they're going to have to do it early and once they do that knowing what is looming in the bullpen and that's one thing opposite of the nationals is the astros have so many guys that they can go to and Garrett Cole who has been the ultimate throw down the hammer are you know for the scene the one point I have to make with Garrett Cole and I know we've seen it so much but the last time he has pitched in relief you go back to his freshman year at us Cla I went and looked at this against the ant eaters gave up a winning run I mean this is like I know it's liked onion cheek like it's been how long since he was a little frothy with the Bruins this is something that I do think fans that now we've seen it time and time again from Randy Johnson no Madison Bumgarner these star pitchers come out of the bullpen it's not as easy is it looks folks he's talking about it being similar to bullpen game he's never done it really he's never done it as a professional he's never done it with the Astros this is something that I think you definitely look for especially early on if he's coming in mid inning what what is he doing where's his heart rate because it's definitely different than than coming in just as the starter all right let's dig into game six last night we'll start with this golf clap or Stephen Strasburg watching that last night just reminded me of how I felt during the two thousand fourteen postseason watching Madison bumgarner where he seemed so in control where even when there were runners on base pitching backwards coming back and counts by throwing off speed pitches he was just absolutely composed and in the end despite the fact that Max Sherzer got up at one point in the sixth inning there Stephen Strasburg still out on the mound in the ninth inning what a performance the fifth five no yeah this amazing to me again Jose Altuva and I remember in the moment I sent this note to our producer in the moment I was like I don't know what's GonNa Happen in this game but to me this is the stories this isn't even the game like that fifth inning at bat it to Jose Altuve to me was the series why I mean you have a pitcher or a hitter up to bat similar to the Anthony Rendon in the first inning where all you really gotta do is put the bomb play take one of those breaking balls fine whole get to the grass score some runs and respond and felt like to all the guys in that order that's what he does I mean that guy can hit anything and Stephen Strasburg you'll get three pitches he started on what the

Great. When the greatest left handed pitchers in baseball history. He killed a bird. You know? Oh, he killed the bird so bad in spring training through. He threw a fastball and that bird exploded. So he had the he had the biggest and most expensive house in Arizona. Arizona. State record. Wow. Oh, yeah. Okay. So he's trying to he's trying to sell it. And he hasn't been able to. I think they dropped it to sixteen million. So that didn't work either. Because if you Randy Johnson, you of all the money in the world you buy a mansion and now it's thirty five million. And then you let it go. Who do you sell it to you? I don't know there's no one of the rich. How about how about a current tea bags player? Nobody's got that kind of money. How about Paul Goldschmidt? "I'm very familiar with what you're talking about about where the trends are in this game and there is you as you say more strikeouts but it's interesting that you don't have pictures like you did in my era that are known to be power pitchers that are are are racking up the strikeouts i guess it must be evenly dispersed over all of baseball and not any particular handful of pitchers i know still like to watch watch matt scherzer because obviously i know him playing here with the diamondbacks he he seems to be the big power pitcher if you will and has been for many years but he seems to be racking up all the strike kouts that i guess outside of that it's all pretty evenly distributed throughout baseball with the strikeout rate being hired incidates game the one thing that i'd never quite understood that i would love to debate with anybody would be taking a starting pitcher out after you know you've onto the rotation or gone through the lineup a couple of times turn to line up over a couple of times i think you're doing starting pitcher a disservice in some ways and what i mean by that is when the starting pitcher gets in a tough situation and he's he's right at that border line of whatever your pitcher limit is for that particular pitcher you know he's a little tired winded and now let's say the go ahead of the winning run is on second base and you take him out of the game and now you're bringing someone else then.

"The scene you know so it could be really anybody but on that particular day i it was kinda funny i got my camera out and tom glavin who i obviously played against is from my era i grabbed him and we were having a cocktail and then sandy colfax wasn't too far off it so i grabbed him and then there was next thing i knew it was up the left handed convention going on what was he colfax like is he's someone is you know who is generally been very private and keeps to himself and doesn't do a lot of media events for you what was it like to get to know him well obviously you know he is who he is one of the greatest left handed pitchers one of the greatest pitchers period of all time in i i have had the opportunity to meet you know some of the the greatest left handed pitchers that that have pitched whether it you know it was steve carlton or sandy colfax or warned spawn but to me sandy colfax obviously when people talk left handed pitchers that's the first name that comes up and i know he is pretty private and didn't really see him too often when i was playing baseball and so when he is that the hall of fame these last three years that i've gone now i've had the opportunity to always go up and shake his hand and and that's the same case with a lot of other people you know obviously being a pitcher i didn't talk to hitters tomb much but now that i'm retired you're sitting mostly i'd say i'd say the percentage is a little bit greater position players and pitchers there you know and more of the induct tease there the hall of famers are starting to become closer to my era that are that are showing up to the event now so i have a little bit more in common with with some of these hall of famers but it's always fun to you know the year that i got inducted you know tom seaver was there nolan ryan and oddest the nolan ryan was playing still before you know in my era i got the got the face him once and grabbing tom seaver for a pitcher he we both played at usc so we had something in common there so it's just you know these these names in these people right karnik in just still get goosebumps when i go to the the hall of fame and they have the induction at the hall of fame and now it's a lot of fun to watch what i went through and not nearly as nervous and becoming more acquainted with everything that goes on and looking forward to going in a couple of weeks again ran a year ear known when you pay for the strikeouts in is you know the game has never seen more strikeouts than what we're seeing right now in the month of april and in the month to june for the first time in baseball history more strikeouts than hits you're also seeing a situations now where teams are almost uniformly taking starting pitchers out after two times through the order you seen a lot more relief pitchers when you see the trends in the game what do you think about them well and i and i am still around the game quite a bit i i do some work for the zona diamondbacks i worked for derrick hall and i actually just got back from from gene county of geneva are single a baseball team the king county cougars of the diamondbacks is just outside of chicago so i still watch baseball and and.

"Rena banana says was the nationals sweep by the dodgers result of building momentum for la or just an exceptionally unlucky weekend for washington boy it's a combination of the two we talk last week how really when you look at the dodgers and you look at the landscape of the west in justin turner coming back there's still time for them to work at but man you talk about like a series it took down players yet how he can't drink blew out his achilles heel he's out for kelly's tendon he's out for the year he had richhill go down after two pitches his blister pop the dodgers saying he's going to miss a list lease four weeks ryan madson went down i i mean that that series brutal to watch in terms of the amount of injuries this is an interesting one buster from andrew munos at benji six with jordan hicks touching a hundred and five miles an hour on the radar gun on sunday who would you not want to face right now in the batter's box where i guess ever hicks chapman roger clemens randy johnson or other so here's an andrew it is a great question because you think about the options you just gave jordan hicks and let's face it when you watch him pitch not entirely sure he knows where the ball is going right and he's throwing one hundred five and it's moving all over the place and you have a role this chapman who looks like if he wanted to quit baseball and become like an ama fighter yeah he could do that and then you've roger clements who was mean and i saw him at times throw the ball right in the middle of the opposing hitters back with his brady anderson robbie alamar then you have randy johnson who i saw lose his temper couple times and that was a little scary for the better of the four probably jordan hicks like i because the other three i think egot the field they generally have a better command jordan hicks right now headed scary watching l much his fastball moves any hope we don't have that situation where it gets away from him josh yeah the uncertainty of it is definitely scary i was expecting you to bring up josh hater though buster the greatest pitcher of our generation right.
