"Well, even the referee in the fights I did in Oklahoma, this kid is getting beat up. And as the referee, Mark Nelson, comes to talk to him, he looks at me and I kind of give him a little nod of no. And he talked to the guy and said, look, man, do you want to continue? The guy said, nothing. He stopped the fight. But it's protecting these guys. When you think back at all the fights you've done, you mentioned Marquez early on. What was the hardest cut, the hardest you've had to work to keep a cut closed? This one, this is an MMA, Jay Haran, Jonathan Goulet from Canada. Jay Haran took a knee from Jonathan Goulet. You know that big vein we have right between the eyes? Well, he popped that vein and that's, when you do that, you're not going to stop it, right? I've never seen so much blood in my life in a fight. It was so much blood that it made me nauseated, right? And when the doctor came and asked me what I thought, I said, ah, no problem, I can stop it, right? I'm cleaning them up and all that. Well, I put the final mixture of Vaseline with Adrenochloride as a topical. It bled right through it just like a busted dime. So, but, yeah, so that one right there, you know, was kind of tough to work with. And he lost, but that Matt is at Randy Couture's gym right now. So that was pretty bad. Were you working with Vitaly for the Lennox Lewis fight? No, but Vitaly told me, he goes, if you would have been with me, I would have won that fight, you know. Do you think you could have closed that? Well, you know, with that, no, yeah, the one on top, yes, control it. But the one that was the problem was the one in the mouth. See, people forget about that. That one, he bled so much that you start, the Julio Cesar child, mild retainer scenario, where you get all this blood that goes into your throat. That one was bad. But, yeah, I've worked on those cuts plenty of times. When you go into a fight, what's the area that is your biggest challenge? Like, if a guy gets, what part of the face the guy gets cut on? He's like, man, I'm gonna have to do my work on this one. Right above the eyebrows? Yeah, right there. But that one, that vein in the middle, you know, you don't want to pop that one, you know. And that's a good question because when you have multiple cuts, then you've got to go with the priorities. The ones on the cheekbone, on the nose, those are the last priorities. The one on the nose, I did when Terrence Crawford fought. I was a guy from Australia. When he fought him in Vegas, I came in as a... Jeff Horn, yeah. Jeff Horn, as an analyst for ESPN. And Jeff Horn got a cut on his nose. I said, man, those type of cuts, you can't stop because there's nothing but cartilage there. I said, that's what we say. It's better you working on it than me. So you don't want those kind of cuts. They make a cut man look bad. Yeah. It's like any other kind of medicine. I'm sure the technology changes over the years. There are new tricks to the trade. I mean, how much have you evolved as a cut man since the beginning? Yeah, I've been through every scenario. You know, I've been through broken bones. I've been through... But the stuff you use... Well... Does that change much? Yeah. Everything is based on the athletic commission. Number one, there's three items that are authorized for now here in Nevada and pretty much everywhere. Adrenaline Chloride 1-1000, vessel constrictor, that's number one. Avatine and Thrombin are coagulants. And now I introduced a gauze pad called Quick Aid that's 100% natural and doesn't require prescription. And what it does, you put it on the cut and it dehydrates it. All these companies always send me stuff to try and that one works the best. And, you know, to get a prescription for the medications we use is almost impossible and they're expensive. A bottle of Adrenaline, that was like 300 bucks. This gauze pad, Quick Aid, and you can get that at cutmanforhiresupplies.com. Juan Ramirez, by the way, he does. He has it. Everybody should have it because it doesn't require skills. All you do is put it on the cut and leave it there for the duration of the round and it'll dry up that blood. And other than that, there's not a lot of new science to it? Everything's based on application. Literally, everything is based on how you do it and when you do it and saving seconds. And you look at fights, I always study fights and if you can get to the fighter within 7-8 seconds, that's good because you basically have 40 minutes, 40 seconds, 45 seconds, maybe 50, right? And like I say, if a fighter's cut and the bell rings and he's at the other side of the ring, I'll go meet him over there and I'll be applying pressures. I take him to his corner and sit him down. So you're working on seconds. When you go into a fight, do you hope to be busy or not busy? Bernardo asked me on the ESPN fights, Camposas got cut. I said, what do you think? I said, man, it's a piece of cake. I love this stuff. I'm waiting for cuts. I don't mind the anticipation. But just to work and I saw the tapes because I was in Tokyo. I saw them this morning and I know people look at the applications. The applications that I applied were applications that work at its highest level. So when you think back at all the years you've been doing it, what are your favorite memories of this job? God, I got tons, bro. We could sit here for hours and I could tell you stories with just about every fighter I've worked with. But working with the clinicals was like tremendous. That's a great experience. I, in 19, December the 12th, 1992, Vitale says, I said 91, he says 92. When the Soviet Union first broke, we took a team of professional boxers and kickboxers to Kiev, Ukraine to fight them. And I had a Mark Longo kickboxer at that time. That was a great journey. And then now to find out that I started working with them when they started training in Vegas and then they did Ocean's 11 with Lennox Lewis when the casino broke. Well, I was Vladimir's cut man in the movie. And from there, I see Emmanuel Stewart at an HBO fight. He's walking into the arena and I'm watching people walk in. And he looks at me and says, Stitch, I want to talk to you about Vladimir rubbing his eyebrow. And I look at my buddy, Steve. I said, did you see what I saw? Well, the next day he called me, says Vladimir wanted the guy that was a cut man in the movie to be his cut man for the fights. And that was me, you know, so that's how we got started on that. Working with Emmanuel Stewart was unbelievable. You know, unbelievable just to say I did eight years with him in the trenches with not only him, but Jonathan Banks and other fighters that he had. You know, you're just a master at what he did. Who are the craziest guys you've worked with? None, actually. You know what? Did you get to work with Tyson? No, I didn't. No, I did patch for Mike. So I'll tell you this story. So I'll tell you. So Mike Tyson, I think he had just left Teddy Atlas and Panama Lewis was with him. So I used to do patch because I was a trainer. When I went to Vegas, I didn't come to be a trainer because I had an eight to five job with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. So I came as a as a cut man, but I could do patch. And I was very, very good at that. Panama Lewis brought me in to do patch for Sultan and Timur Bragimov, the Russian guys. And, you know, so Johnny Tapia did pass for him and and all these guys. And so Panama called me to do patch with Mike. And I would have been glad just do one day at work. I did two days, two weeks of work with him. And that was good. This guy took a picture of us and that son of a bitch wanted to sell to me for 50 bucks.

"You got to look at Sarah. I mean, that guy is a beast. Really, I have some I have so much respect for all the guys in your business John. But that guy's got to be at the top of the list to do what he's done at his age. I mean, and then he's a lot more than just the toughest landscape of all time. Put it down. That's true. Yeah. I mean. No, I do believe of all the guys who have realized success at an advanced age if we can even say that, right? Go over to share a Randy couture, Daniel Cormier, I mentioned Andrea lobster, I do believe Glover Teixeira set himself apart, right? I do. Nature of the matchups he had against young, hungry, up and coming contenders and the fact that he was able to go toe to toe with them. I think you're absolutely right. That he has set himself apart. One thing that I did just want to bring up with you briefly, because again, like I don't say this because I'm here, but having you in this MMA space to whatever degree is a tremendous asset, right? I'm watching the telecast this past weekend, may rob dwellers, Willie, and pyotr Yan, and they show your tweet. And you mentioned the word deliberate, right? How pyotr Yan he just fights a little bit too deliberate for this type of matchup. And then a couple rounds later, you went back to that adjective, right? So I'm taking notes for my podcast that I'm taping later today. I write down teddy Atlas deliberate, right? And then you go back to it. And that's the adjective. So your wealth of information and knowledge, right? It transcends combat sports. And I was in your position, granted, there were only ten people listening. But I was hosting the mouthpiece boxing show in 2004 and people were like, why are you guys talking about MMA? And, you know, I couldn't get those ten people off my back. I'd imagine for you. It's a different navigation, but it's a real thrill for us to have you talking about this stuff. Well, thank you, John. It's, like I said, it's some, it's great to have you with us. You give us validation with them and they world. Yeah, you're probably smiling when I say that because you're so humble, but you do. You do, you give us our chops as the word you use earlier. A little bit extra that you aren't here talking to MMA with us. You know, you touched on, we touched on a fight with Jones, of course. On that card was an extraordinary upset. That upset in the women's fight was as big as they come, probably, have, where does that fit in upsets that you've seen and, you know, what do you think of when you were sitting there calling that? Because I love when you guys do this. Oh, well, hey, I mean, and you had to, I didn't see it because I was there alive with you. So I couldn't have the privilege of seeing that, but there must have been some been a few of those. There's nothing like it. It's the greatest unpredictable theater in live sport. And when I think back to maybe going to call a college basketball game, right? I just don't know how I would go back to doing that. This sport has ruined a lot of the other sports for me. But yeah, I mean, sometimes it's hard to quantify historically and upset until you have some separation from it. Certainly I was more surprised when giuliana Pena beat Amanda Nunes just given where Amanda Nunes was at that stage of her career. I don't want to sit here and say that this was a passing of the tourists because Valentina Shevchenko is probably going to be a three to one favorite if there's an immediate rematch and it stands to reason. She's got a great chance to beat Alexa grosso, but Alexa Grasso was elevating towards her fighting prime and everything was coming together and she had put in the requisite work with her wrestling and her grappling. Juxtaposed against Valentina Shevchenko, who might have been smarting after a split decision win last June in Singapore, but I do believe that some of that shot had come off of Valentina that the rest of the division felt like all of a sudden this champion wasn't so otherworldly and was a little bit beatable. But I do believe the grosso upset was rooted in two things. Conditioning and preparation, right? Those are two things that she can control. She has the best coach. I think that she can get in Mexico, her uncle Francisco grosso. Great jiu-jitsu coaches that drilled that flight ending sequence. But then just her commitment to conditioning. Not to mention that she trains granted. It's not Mexico City, but training above sea level, right? The ability to go 5 rounds. She could have gone 15 rounds with Valentina Shevchenko and I think she was buoyed by just the strength and conditioning. So the whole division is wide open, man. I mean, I always say, and I know I'm being a little bit long winded, but the best part of this job for me. The best part of this job for me is seeing a non champion become a UFC champion for the first time. And thus, the reactions were all very happy for Alexa grosso here a week removed. I'll tell you why it happens. I'll tell you why it happens. So that I can speak on from my boxing background. It happens because of Dana White and because really I'm not it happens because he insists unlike boxing because boxing has no regulator. Boxing has no dictator. Sometimes it dictator could be good. As long as they're not laughing heads off. You know, that's not good. That's not good. Right. But when you say it's my way of the highway, you know, and you say

"He actually had concussion problems. It wasn't that he couldn't see, but he had several concussion symptoms and because, you know, he's so wealthy and so famous. He went to the best concussion centers, and they were hooking electrodes up to his head. No one did anything for him. And I just said, I'm like, a couple times, and he was like, well better. Amazing. Any MMA guys or anybody that you remember specifically that was just remarkable story or just that's very memorable adjustment. That you can share. I mean, the only the only. Memorable many of the things. I think maybe somebody adjusted them, then they choke you out or something go like that. I mean, the thing that comes to mind is here's one, and it was actually not the greatest story in a way, but it was a great story anyway. So I'm not, I don't get starstruck very easily. When I'm around famous people, like I just don't care. And it's kind of funny. One MMA fighter came to me. And I don't know why. I just kind of got starstruck when I was around him. And it didn't really make sense because I was never like a huge fan of his, not that I didn't like him. I had nothing against him whatsoever. And I respected him totally, and I was a fan, but I wasn't, I wasn't a big fan of his. I wasn't a big fan at all. And there were plenty of people who were just as, if not more famous than him, who have come to me who I really liked. You think if I was going to get starstruck, it would have happened around then. I mean, I've just had hicks and Gracie. I wasn't starstruck around him at all. Yeah. But Randy couture came into me to get adjusted. And I don't know why. I got kind of starstruck. I don't even know why I did. It was kind of weird. And I'm not breaking patient confidentiality, which I would never do. Because he wrote this in his autobiography, what I'm going to say. So Randy comes in and I feel the back of his head and he had a chronic zone two, which means his a limited system had been out for a long time. I felt that in his head.

"Is wrestling. Hey, there's a punchline for you, kids. That's good for him. That's awesome. So cable Alaska is having Mark geragos defend him. You know, Mark Aaron goes, he's a famous lawyer. He just oh, right. I think he defended Michael Jackson, but he lost a justice Jussie Smollett, but how do you defend Jesse Smollett? That guy, that was just dumb. I don't know if there's a lawyer in the world that could have no. At that point, you're just doing it for publicity, because apparently that's what he was doing it for. Anyway, too? That's still one of the strangest stupidest fucking things you've ever heard of. So James Tony claims that Randy couture to avoid the rematch. Don, any thoughts on that? James Tony. That was the fact that he says that Randy guitar retired to avoid the rematch with him. That was like the funniest, right? When he just took him down and he just fucking, what are the arm triangle them? And Tony was wearing like flip flops and he had a weapon specialist train him, which was crazy because he's like, I don't understand that at all. Don, is your is your Wi-Fi okay? Kinda yeah, thanks so. As long as I don't move. As long as you don't move too. Nice. I appreciate it. Nobody move. So what did you say about a rematch? So James Tony says that Randy couture retired to avoid the rematch. Didn't wait a minute, didn't couture like just take him down and Tony just lay there with his legs sticking out? Yeah, yeah, yeah. He had no idea he was doing. I feel like he would love the chance to do that again. So Jason called out Barack Obama. So Barack Obama tweeted this. Can we just pause for a second and thanks, Jake Paul for ruining America. Well, he didn't really call him out, but he said, I just tested positive for COVID. I said Obama said, I've had a scratch. He wrote for a couple days, but I feel otherwise. Michelle and I are grateful to be vaccinated and boosted. And she tested negative. To remind her to get vaccinated if you haven't already, even as cases go down. So as Jake shields responded, I got my girlfriend pregnant while we're in a Trojan condom. But thankfully, I was wearing a condom..

"Slice. So stupid. What? This isn't real. It's so dove. This is what it's creating. This is what the Jake Paul thing is granted. Okay, yeah, so let's get yeah. So, you know, I've got to say, let's get horse shack, but they actually did a fight with workshop. You know? He said. Is that now? I know what he did one of those stupid celebrity boxing things too. You know? Dustin diamond, who's also dead now. So, I mean, it's like this is just garbage. Stop it. All right, there's a thread going on. Is Brock Lesnar the least skilled heavyweight division one champion in history. Yes. What do you think? Thoughts, Don. Yeah. I don't know. Are you talking about as a college wrestler or as a fighter? The threat is, okay, I saw the underground. He goes, Brock Lesnar. He's the only skill. He's super rewarded, and he win this fucking entitled power and fear. All the videos he's so far, people waiting to attack him. I'll keep looking. No, I mean, he was crazy skilled wrestling wives, right? He had striking was pretty bad. But I think he had the fortunato of coming into it when the heavyweight division was still pretty thin. You know? I mean, a lot of the really good heavy weights were aging out. There were very few new ones coming in. So we kind of had this great window of opportunity. And the only thing we learned was that he couldn't take a punch to the vase. Well, he'd be Randy couture, who was beat a lot of great guys. Yeah, but a lot of it was him just laying on them. He would pin him against the face. Randy actually outstruck. He actually landed a big one on Randy. And then he beat Frank Mir. Right, when he pinned him down and beat his face like a fucking, you know, made it look like hamburger. But again, a lot of it was just using his weight to pin guys down. I would say he didn't have a lot of great all around skill 'cause when he did get punched in the face. He folded like a fucking cheap table. Well, 'cause he didn't train with Don Frye. That would have fucking, you know, he could have trained with Don. He was there. He was at Arizona, and then marker kicked him out of the room. So dumb, so dumb..

"It's how you react. Right now, I think I'm reacting, okay. So Caitlyn Vieira versus Misha Tate. Kaylyn beer is coming off she coming off. He beat Jana, katana. She beats cigar Eubanks. She lost. I read out danya by knockout, but that girl I think has better striking than Misha Tate, just make sure doesn't have a grinder. Kind of an old school, Randy couture types, he gets you down and just lays on you and pounds you, not that you can't do it. But doesn't seem to have that one punch really pop. And sajara Eubanks does, but Cesar's jar Eubanks tires out quickly. And Jana has not really looked that well in her last couple fights. She lost she had knocked out by irina Donna. She beat Kaitlyn Vieira. She beat Bubba Wallace. She lost to ask them lab, I knock out in round three. So I'm saying, I think that Misha Tate wins his fight. I do. I think Misha Tate is a different fighter right now, and I think that she's fresh. She wants it. She came to my comedy show. She laughed. She seems to be at a happier place. Doesn't have all the stress on her. And I think she's a different fighter. I do. Michael chiesa versus Shawn Brady. This fight, you know, I think that I've been buying into the Sean Brady hype, which how can you not? The guy looks like a fucking monster. But you look at the guys he's fought. He Jake Matthews by triangle. That's awesome. Jake Matthews is a strong, strong guy. Tough guy from Australia. He'd be Christian or aguilera, he'd be court McGee. He beat his male nerdy up. All those guys are good guys, okay? They're all they're solid. But let's look at Michael chies resume. Vincente Luke, he lost. He beat Neil Magny bad. He beat how I felt dose anos bad. He beat Diego Sanchez bad. He beat Carlos Condit by Kimura. He lost Anthony Pettis. That was three years ago, actually over three years ago. He lost to Kevin Lee. That was a weird stop. Remember that? And that was just I think that was like the weekend after I got married. And then he beat Daniel Darius. And I was there for that. I was a weird fight. That was a very weird fight. I wasn't there for that, but he I couldn't believe it he'd be Darius. You see, like, submitted him. So look at level of opposition, and I think he has to take it, because, you know, Sean Brady is coming up, he's looking great, but he's looking great against guys on that be your sea level. Kiesa has this been in there with fucking monsters and has always come on the top, but experience is a bitch. And I don't think yes is ready yet. To say, you know, all right, you know, and also he also sometimes like, yeah, I think he's gonna win. Joanne calderwood. That girl, by the way, I took a leg kick from her because that was my pile, trained me to come do his, he was like, hey, man, let's do, you know, we could training and then he just, he started to pretend he knew it was a real fight. He's like, you got way in tomorrow, and you got the press conference. I'm like, dude. Fucking tired. In Vegas, I got shows all night, I'm not really a fighter. This is getting weird at the same time. I love the guy. Anyway, so he said, one of my payments to him was getting kicked in the leg by Joanne calderwood..

"No, I check off when we offer share. But my partner George made doesn't match making and, you know, he knows he's fine as well. They've been around for like 15 years so they know all the gyms, all the coaches I got, you know, some buddies of mine, you know, who fought and before UFC Bellator now was a little bit older, maybe on their way out, but they're training guys now. So I'm always gonna know who's who's up and coming and even on over their training sometime in the corner. I'm like, my eyes, my head is always looking like who's that kid and the black short? So I always got out too. I was gonna say, were you ever interested in folding your thing into another promotion? Do you always just want to have your own promotion? It seems like at some point, you probably could sort of damn it, you probably could have just had I'm sorry, scholars don't just call me at all. Anyway, you could have just kind of joined up with another promotion, but you wanted your own thing. What about your own thing was so important and what's different about yours and all the other promotions? Well, for one, you know, I've been around, I since my very first day would Randy couture in like 2006 and I just wanted to go in and get a little work and grappling and whatever and helped my football play. I didn't, you know, I didn't know that it was going to become like one of these things where I just was doing this shit all the time. And find myself around, you know, MMA fighters more than I did probably NFL guys. They would all come down to the games, hook them up with tickets and hang out and return they would train me. And so when I had an ambassador deal with Bellator from like 2016 and 2018, I forgot the exact time. But just getting around being around and you know, Scott Cole Grimm and that whole group over there, they were great to work with, but it was a lot of insight for me. The whole point of it was for me for me to have my own promotion. It was always bound to happen. And I saw an opportunity to grow a league that was already there. You know, rebranding and grow a league. And you know, anybody would tell you that this I wake up to the shit. You know what I'm saying? It's like one of these things were like, nothing happens during my day unless I figure something out with likes out and then okay, everything else, we got to talk to anybody else..

"By was a completely different story. He never kicked me once. I picked him a couple of times. Took him down and ended up finishing him in the third round. Even go the distance. So it really was a turning point for me technically. I learned a lot facing that adversity facing that. I fight aphid. Sign that contract and fight again right away Was was a big big end. That bite with josh barnett. You mentioned that was a big turning point for me to like. I said i'd been working a lot on my grappling and being on my back and doing all this stuff and the heat of that flight in early on we got into a scramble. And i pulled guard and josh were add on oppa me. I went back and looked at that tape. Like what the hell was i thinking or attend. There's no way that guy could take me down. And i put myself on the bottom. Which cost me the fight. I had to go back and really kind of realize what my mindset was why. I put myself in that bad position Eh go back to wrestling making guys russell me not pulling guard not playing this game. I was never going to catch up with those black belts in jujitsu any more than they were going to catch up with me at our wrestling experience. There's no way so at a really kinda shift my thinking that loss forcing you to do that really analyze what was doing and again. Sometimes those losses are just as important as any win because it forces you to analyze who. You are what you're doing makes you a better athlete and a better human being at the end of the day after josh barnett won you won the fight. He felt a drug test. One to ask you. How bad do you think steroids were in. Mma at this point where they started they started testing in two thousand obviously started fighting in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven. I knew there were guys that were doing it. It was apparent. But i never looked at it as as an advantage for them. I felt like guys that were doing. That were focused on iraq. They were more focused on their beach muscles in how good they look walking out it instead of their endurance durability technique and tactics to win bites so i was looked at it as an advantage. I'm rolling there against the guy that's been doing that for that. I suspect there's been doing that. I knew his head was in the wrong place. And i would have a chance to really make him. Work really make entire l. Push that cardiovascular system to the pump oxygen to all those muscles I just saw that as an advantage. They didn't really start testing with the athletic commissions until two thousand. Obviously that's josh popped because they started testing It was what it was. They tried to give me the title back said. No you're not giving me the tunnel back. In my opinion. I still lost that bite front. You're not a hand the bill back. i'll white belt. But you're not just going to give it back to me and applied. Rico rodriguez in the higginson. I was winning. That fight is a big strong guy taking me down in the in the fifth by around and catching me with an elbow right in the eye and fractured my eye of which absolutely exploded in my brain. I barely tapped instantly. I knew something was seriously wrong. So berry serious. Injury took me about six months to recover from that. That's the first time my mom called me. She she was at that by she saw them put me into the ambulance and the whole thing but she called me you know. I couldn't fly home for a couple of days because of the you know everything that was going on. She called me after. I'd gone and had surgery on the orbit. She's like hey you know maybe it's time to think about doing something to retire like now. I'm i'm fine. Mom gonna be fine. Got more to do and obviously recovered in my back fighting but It was definitely one of those times. Mom's worried about my being by their knows best. Yeah did you ever look at what kurt was doing on. Wwe programming and think well. Maybe there's a way to make a bunch of money. Keep my orbital bones where they belong. Does that never even cross your mind. Well i loosened. That did the job that kurt was doing weekend. Weak out night after night was any easier than meet on in that cage every couple months and getting potentially get punched kicked in the head. The the grinding grueling schedule that those guys in pro wrestling keep is no joke. Burke can attest to that Also i think because of our my collegiate wrestling roots and already being involved in may It never really appealed to me did. I don't know any other way to say why you are. You're heavyweight champion. What made you make the move to light heavyweight champion. What reason for them. Well i lost that. Fight to josh burnett in had lost the fight to riga. Rodriguez wasn't the heavyweight champion. I was a small heavyweight anyway. Walking around twenty I threw it out there that they had already scheduled to fight the last fight on my contract with andrea in the heavyweight division. I had thrown it out there to joe silva and company saying. Hey i you know i can make two five. There's a chance at or you're interested in me coming down at finding a light-heavyweight i can make that pretty easily I was scheduled to fight. Andre andre broke his hand relief before that. Fight the same time. This is going on in the lightheaded division chuck and and tito tito was the champ. Chuck was number one contender. For whatever reason they could make that fight hap and junk was pissed off. He wanted his shot to like friends. I we always agreed. We'd never fight So they were the processes stripping tito of his title and they asked me. If i said i wasn't gonna fight andrei because of the broken hand. Would i find chuck at light weight for the interim championship while they kind of got out of there and gave chuck his shot. I said yeah. I'll do that again. I think they expected my old ass was just gonna get beat by chuck in chuck would be the interim champ that will put more pressure on tito to have to find to unify the belt and the titles. Obviously again i was the monkey ranch. A record plans ready at beat chuck and now. I'm the champs. And so they they said hey. We want you to fight year right away. unified the belts and said okay. That sounds great. And so three months later i ended up fighting a tito to unify the interim championship. The and the championship belt in. And now i'm the light heavy champion so Again kawamata whirlwind. And i was the fly in the ointment.

"Of deal. I showed you type of thing. I didn't really have that attitude about it. But i definitely after finally giving up on. The olympic aspirations retiring early that summer was now able to dedicate and focus one hundred percent on on going out and be a world champion when i rolled into that title fight with most. I never set out to be a world champions. This new sport that i saw other restaurants doing that i wanted to try and low behold instead of a month on fighting for world championship. It just got to happen so as a little wellness it was like what the heck just happened now. I'm very focused to set the goal. Look no. I'm gonna win that tile back so certainly a sense of accomplishment to get back in get get another title shot to beat. A guy is formidable as as kevin To win the title definitely vilified achieved the goal. And something i set out to achieve whether you have see is a lot of upheaval at this point. Do for buying them out before the next time you do a ufc show. So in the meantime you return to japan and rings when you meet with the farinas and dana white here what they have planned for the of c. Yeah that's an interesting story. Because that december. After i beat kevin i was in japan. I was and dan henderson. And matt linlin was over there for a few weeks right before christmas. I was looking for new management. I'd i'd walked away from rico at lou There was a lotta headbutting. Going on between davis to who was running the show and me dante decided it was time to move on and get some some other representation. I signed with a a group called bala- management. Which was jeremy lab. Peter levin but i also talked dana white because at that time dana white which representing chuck liddell and tito ortiz is their manager. I sat down with him while i was in japan. Talk to him about representing me as well as a potential manager. I'd also met with jeremy and peter levin with battle management. I hadn't made a decision yet and then dana calm after we met and he said look. There's big things happening. You're gonna like what's going on. But i'm not going to be able to manage and i said you know i appreciate your call me but i already coincide with these other guys But thanks and i'll be watching out to see what's coming down the pike and sure enough that february. The for titas and dana white bought the company from bob meyer whitson. Sag now right away state. They you know they took a bunch of their top guys and they started this ad campaign with carmen electra khanna trying to mainstream the sport change the image of the sport. Make it a legitimate event. Not this kind of sideshow or freakshow that had become and they ran towards regulation towards unified rules that previous year With sag at the home. larry hazzard at a new jersey at the commission jersey developed unified rules that they started promoting all boxing commissions across the country. So you know it was again a bit of a wild west. There were underground shows and stuff going on everywhere but the rules of engagement were differ depending on where you went. Even what was going on in pride in japan at that time or shoot though and pancreatic japan at that time each one of those organizations different rules in different rules of engagement and these unified rules kind of leveled the playing field. Everybody was kind of made it a legitimate sport. these are the rules is what we do. and then they kept tweaking that every time there was a show in the rules would change just a little bit but The for titas had the savvy and the pocket book to really revamp the sport and push it out into the mainstream as a legitimate sport instead it is pay per view freed show band up to that point and they deserve credit for that they definitely had some vision. Did they ever lay out that vision to you as one of their cornerstone guys of hey. Here's what we're trying to do. Would you have ever envisioned that. It would become as big as it did I think we were all hopeful. We're all worried that it was going to die certainly with with. Sag running it. It was it was dwindling was on its way to to suffering and maybe going away and i think because of the lorenzo for tita especially but the potatoes and dana white they had the connections and the savvy to kind of revamp the sport run towards regulation. You know embraced the unified rules. Create rounds in ten point must scoring system. Those are all things from boxing in combative sports that we understand in the american market. So i think all of those things helped with sports to gain momentum but even then it was still struggling they. It's been about forty million dollars doing all that remarketing and all that and they still work getting back. The money in the paper abused. Stop money so. They came up with the idea in canada last ditch effort to do the ultimate fighter this in two thousand or they come up with this format. The only one that will put it on tv with spike. And of course everyone knows the story from there. The ufc got their big break with the ultimate fighter and went really mainstream and the sport just exploded But let's go back and talk about zoo. I took over and now you're thinking about coming back in. They bought the company They it signed pedro his it to a nine fight deal biggest deal. Anybody had gotten into sport at that point and i was an old. I was pushing push. Joe heddon hidden towards forty and their heavyweight champion when they bought the company. So i don't think they thought it was very marketable as an older champion They wanted this young brazilian kid. Who's a big stud great kickboxer Too i think they expected him to be in that fight and it didn't go out that way. I ended up winning. Three three of the five rounds and winning unanimous decision which i think kind of monkey wrench their plans for that for that. Beginning stood pedro. His oh They signed him to a nine fight deal. That was the first to nine of his fights with he didn't win the title so I was due to renegotiate contract. And they said okay. We'll we'll really appreciate what you but you have to give him an automatic rematch. I'm like well eight. Kick the dog snot out of my lead leg. I don't really want to do that. But if that's what we gotta do that's what we do. So i went ahead and signed. A new contract agreed to the automatic rematch and went to seattle and started training with most smith. The guy flapper my first title. Fight the great kickboxer that he was he he'll be changed my stance figure out how to check kicks out of throat kicks really adjusted and tweaked a lot of these in my style. I was to walk out there in a wrestler stand sixty percent of my way on my front leg and the other forty percent on my back leg Uses a rudder kinda change directions and penetrate to take guys down in in fighting and kickboxing. It's the opposite. It put about sixty percent of your weight on your back legs that you could raise that up and deflect kicks off of you shed instead of taking it to the meteor thighs That was something. I had not learned in till i started training with most mitt and getting ready for that second. Pedro is a fight. He kicked me fourteen times in matt. I by my legs swelled up in turn black. I still have a dent in modify where some of that muscle. It's dead the hell with you or not cover back so.

"Ended up being in that match. Three two one goes on and wins the battle in sydney in that way class And i retired. I decided it was time to hang up the wrestling boots and go back and just focus on anime and and really devote all my time to emma may instead of juggling both balls juggling stir wrestling and the fighting You spend a bunch of time in japan with rings. What was the difference between what was on in american. Mma japanese emma man. Well there's a very close parallel between pro wrestling and mma in the japanese market. You had guys like inoki who came from that pressing background. The shoot though guys They were developing the and they were using a ring instead of a cage Back dan pancreas. You could do rope escapes. you can punch kick sometimes. It was open hand shoe dole out of the rules. Were open palm strikes Instead of close this on the ground when you were standing you usually And punchy kick Just different rules of engagement and had kind of a different form of the same sport but it was a little more akin to pro wrestling. They liked ill the costumes they liked they would put on some works they would do. A worked shoot. Randy was apart work. Part shooter was for some or exci- sauce of bites. That i would swear works. Obviously that was common knowledge. But but you know again. I think that was a little more acceptable in the japanese market. That was not a fly in the. Us market if they smell the worker they bought guys weren't biting. The service should be fighting. They would say oh. This is a work. It's not a real fight and they would get disgusted. They they were irritated with that whole thing so there was definitely a difference between the japanese market. What was going on there. What was going on in the us so you take a break from him and made to focus again on your amateur wrestling career. Why did you think he needed to make that move in two thousand two to maybe go back into that. It's just the goal that i hadn't achieved. I sat out being a lithium in to win a medal at the olympics. I was getting up there in age. guys young guys like garrett lowney where we're coming onto the scene dude berbera well both nationally and internationally At some point push comes to shove you gotta you gotta make a decision that was going to be my last opportunity. My last quadrennium if you will to chase finally achieving making that olympic teams as standing on that podium which is a big deal Incurred can attest to that. Would a big part of his life that was and it was a big part of my life to is just one of those goals. I never accomplished able to put closure to that because i did win the gold. Madeline what i set out to do. So i completely understand rainy. I would've done the same thing jew. And i'm not saying i. I would have accomplished everything you accomplished. But i would probably done the same thing as you out to continue to keep trying. Yeah i just one of those things you just can't let go of certainly not easily you're hanging out with some friends and putting back a few drinks and few becomes a few too many as evening comes to an end when people start to head out you think of calling for a ride. You live nearby. You can make it home. Okay it's no big deal. What are the odds. you'll get pulled over anyway. And even so what's the worst that can happen. Your insurance goes up. You lose your license. You lose your job you total your car. You kill someone. Everyone knows about the risks of driving drunk. The results are tragic and often deadly. However that doesn't stop everyone from getting behind the wheel under the influence. That's why police officers are out there right now looking for impaired drivers on our roads to save lives. So if you think you're okay to drive after a few drinks think again. Play it safe and plan ahead to get a ride. It only takes one mistake to change your life or someone else's forever drive sober or get pulled over paid for by nitsa. Well you return to rings and go to know before the ufc comes back to you and offers you a shot at the heavyweight title. How did you get past what happened. Previously ufc wide. You wanna return. Well like i said that will happen in two thousand. I hung up my boots in dallas at those final trials So now what you know now. I can go back to just pursuing being a professional athlete in the fighter a they were having some trouble handling kevin randle men. At that time you know. Kevin was a pre boisterous personality talented guy but a pretty boisterous person for sure and he was giving him some trouble he was you know they. They were say they were very happy. With the way things will go with kevin. They reached out to me. After after a disagreement over the contract they offered me a contract and a shot at the at the championship. So i don't know anybody who's not gonna jump on opportunities from literally being on the outs you know with the company and and then the company reaching out saying hey we. We'd really like you to come back and fight for the heavyweight title. I said okay. I'm i'm happy to come back. And fight for the title against kevin what. I've already done the first leg of this tournament with rings. The finals are february. You have to allow me to follow through and finish that tournament. Go to the finals. They agreed to that they said okay. No problem you can go. Go finish the tournament in february and japan but we want you to fight in october against kevin around them and in in atlantic city at boardwalk hall and and said okay dear done and i knew that was gonna be a tough fight. I knew every anytime at based another guy with the wrestling credentials add. It was going to be a tougher fight. I relied heavily on my wrestling background and experience to put guys that didn't have that experience in bad places in bad positions and where the now that was going to be very difficult against a guy like kevin here is as explosive untalented. It's any guy. I've ever seen wrestle. Absolutely so i knew it had the potential to be a dangerous fighting in a tough flight. But i've been spending a lotta my time working on jujitsu learning how to wrestle off my back in for fear that some point gonna run into somebody that can take me down and sure enough. I second round. Kevin took me down But i had done enough and spent enough time there. Almost arm barton was able to protect myself and not sustained any damage in the third round. I took kevin now did the diet. Cockroach beth. Ours went straight up in the air. Like i climbed right to mount in and for mount was able to finish the fight so there was a dispiriting difference in the whole work and time. I'd spent kinda learning all this other stuff and it was apparent that kevin. Ill hadn't really been spending any time learning any of these other skills. He was who he was. Yes yeah now. That was definitely kevin. Yes well as you said You're going to get the the win with the tko finish now. You're the first two time heavyweight champion in the ufc and considering the sorta upset ufc plans once before when you finish vitor belfort their poster boy. This has got to feel good after that contract dispute to come back and win the thing again. Is this like a crowning achievement. Is this like Hey let's stick it up their kista sort.

"I think there's guy on the other couch. There it was a heavyweight happy to to make $50,000 a month. So this week in Bellator, musasi is fighting John Salter should be a good fight. Everyone's I'm thinking John Salter, I mean, he's a guy that he's what his last like, nine or ten fights. His only loss was to a guy who they were off the best guy in the world but the guy had the kind of a brain aneurysm. I'm thinking John Salter for the upset, you McCorkle, I'm going to solve things I've ever even. Heard of other guy, gotta go with what I know the same with you. Greg sure where we at. What are we going home? Yeah, one of the one guy is going to be the other guy and nobody's going to go for Bellator. One guy is going to beat the other guy. Wow. Well, I got to look it up now, they'll be find it. Musashi versus John Salter. Oh yeah, yeah, I gotta go with what with Sean's assessment. I've heard of Wisconsin wage. I don't know, it's alter so I don't really know this championship fights. Yeah, he lost half of the bottle. That was a long time ago and then the 4th for that he had lost his in like since 2010. So sounds of wondering that is this week where I mean I'm trying to show time okay I'm going to Rufio thoughts is a great fighter. Him on the show as fighting ma Gomez, Gomez Was Eighteen and one roof eons 15 and one that you defied I like that should be a very good friend. I am in the PFF, Jack's should be a commute that. All right, so and the this week Thursday, All right, you got it. Also on the 13th on Friday. Ray Cooper, the third Hawaiian do to win the million dollars last year, he beat David, Michaud of the final seems to knock everyone out. This guy, it's fighting, Rory MacDonald in the playoffs. Should be a good fight. Rory MacDonald is fucking serial killer, he's ripped. Now, he's got a whole camp with Timmy, come into pfl, unlikely was his first two fights. Now he won his first fight, he lost a second against placement email, but he really won that fight. I don't know what they were thinking, the same thing, but and then also on this card clay-colored, he's the guy that beat Anthony Pettis he's on the card. He Valla, pardon Curtis millender, used to be in the UFC off, so yeah, yeah, this is the fights in both the pfl. The FL has a weird. You know, they have all these like three weeks in a row. They take like three months off and then I play all starts again. They gotta find some kind of orange juice. Right, seems like I think we almost half. I think if they're Fighters a chance to to, to, to heal, you know, cuz they're fighting this tournament style, which means they're locked into the guys that they thought, I think they just gotta give them time, you know. I I don't think they really have a I mean they could force it to be a lot faster, but you end up with guy, you know, having people four different fights left and right. Because then because of the injuries right? B, f l trade, more millionaires, a year than the FCS I guess the craziest thing ever. I don't know. It's true. It's crazy. Yeah. But they also have like six guys in the roster, but, yeah, but you're right. It is crazy also. Randy Couture hopes to pfl, bring down to fight someone night, twenty twenty year. And he's an old-school guy, you know, Randy back of the day was a monster, just.

Those more will celebrity fights back in nato's new celebrity charity invites so for me. Do wanna find a fighting him. Go get you hit a lot harder than ben. Aspirin no doubt but ben went down from that first. Big shot that jake land did not i think jake while he's not a championship level boxer by any stretch. I think he can box. I mean what. "They didn't have an axe throwing contest of his top off is the counterpunch Dakota would laugh at his jokes. I made 10000 jokes about him, but when he came in came out the podcast listen to the show and he's like, oh, please not mention. I was like, no you make jokes once in a while. So tired today. Did you take a Redbull before this dog off now, you know why you gave me a fake phone number phone number before he got killed and sliced it made his own drinking his chewing it right now. It went to college. I never think eight for Thursday. I don't even believe he went to college by the way, you know, it's like, you know, they had a they had a underground they had a poll but college has the best wrestlers in MMA and it was you know, OSU and a choice cuz you gotta go OSU has has Cormier Hendrix fry Randy Couture. I mean those for all went to OSU and then this way I'll Crush Meyer who's coming out a s you had Cain Velasquez Ryan Bader CB dollaway a couple other guys, but it was it was pretty cool. Actually, I think towns is Saunders went to ASU. But yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know, I see Ryan Bader is the best one out of the out of the bunch After Me Song. Crap out of the Randy Couture. Yes, come on. Yes. No. Yes, no, no choice, right Ryan Bader played Randy just out-and-out wrestling anybody. He he only had two fucking fights and that was against Chuck Liddell Randy Couture or beat Vitor Belfort Tim Sylvia and everybody, you know and roughly how long do they like but you wouldn't put like GSP or could be even that category of guys who out wrestle guys who who to win fights? Yeah, but they throw punches and kicks too though, right? Yeah, I ran it through punches. All right fine. I will go on record thinking that I am guitar had the better and make her the Ryan Bader but I understand he was a two-time UFC champion or three time, right? We're Bader never know if you'll give me Tim Sylvia and like a race was pretty good. I mean I thought oh you got your on your fucking mind. He was yeah when it was the lowest it's ever been. It was lower than this now. I'm still a UFC champion in me. How low could it be if your if your if your best guide Ultimate Fighting but nobody shows up? Nobody showed up. Nobody come on little drawings value take advantage of a little dry spell. Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean McCorkle, how come it's on Facebook, but then here you still laugh the whole time. All right. "Year you two just Google American shaman and find the closest location to you. That makes three of us because I used the products as well, Frank for you. You mentioned it earlier, but I want to kind of re focus on this. What is it about American shaman? That makes it a brand that you trust in an industry that's got a lot of competitors. Well, American shaman wasn't my first exposure to the CBD industry. And I kind of really was not impressed. You know, I've read and heard so much about it. I really was enthusiastic about giving it another opportunity to try CBT. And in the past, the other products I've tried just did not come up to anything. What I was told to do it. Do It wasn't until I was exposed. The American shaman CBD that I actually felt market difference and started to see one was just how Smalling wasn't in certain parts of my body, my joints and whatnot, and that's why I was telling anybody like If there's any doubt whether or not you want to give it a shot. That's why American shaman even go in, get a sample at any of the stores and try it out. Because once you get first hand experience, you know, no real risk to yourself. Besides the gas, it took you to get there. Um, that makes no sense The world not to give it a shot. I tell people that the minute you try the product you'll see for yourself and then mount, actually, you know, Taking a tour the factories and seeing how it's made. It makes sense why it works so much better with the matter technology. How is broken down and becomes water? Sybil much more than any other city product before which were had men of that ability or all extremely oil based, I just didn't absorb nor in their ability that That the American shaman has for him. That's so true. American Shaman definitely is a superior performing product. I know that you had the longest tenure in New York City history, the fountain, Bela, Tor, and the day after that, I know you considering coaching basically, what's next for you, Frank in your career. I mean, it's been an exciting one. So far. We know there's some stand up comedy going on. But what else do you have planned for your future? And most importantly, how can American Chabon CBD help you? Don't you want to do You know? Honestly, I think that if you have asked about 15 years ago if I'd still be fighting for the one I would have said no. But now it's It's more less. I I kind of just want to see how far the human body can really go. I think a lot of guys we have these preconceived notions of what OK at this age, man should you know be doing this? I mean, hell when I was a kid, you know, 41. You're you know, you've got a big belly. You're grilling burgers in the backyard and you might be telling glory days. Stories of high school. Not actually still competing with other 20 something year old athletes and then and then waiting on. So now you know, the first guy that ever did. It was Randy Couture that damn Henderson thought into their forties and still winning titles. So now I'm just curious how far I could go and push and it doesn't help it. One of my main wagering partners and coaches make best if 51 years old, and he's still out. Lift everybody in the jet, perhaps down, not even a competition. And so I'm sure they're going. Wow. Yeah, I gotta stop making, you know jokes about getting older. You know, I can't because, well, here's somebody who's 10 years my senior who's kicking my butt in the gym on a regular basis and everybody else on the way out. Guys that haven't met twice. They can't hold candle to him. And so now that's basically what I want to do is just push as far as I can to see what really is the limitations of what an athlete can do. And not just be motivated by financial games. Because that makes sense to me Why semantics hanging up? You don't make much money. As you get older, You can transfer another field to do other things. And But that's not even really y sort of thing to begin with. It was always a test myself, and now I'm testing myself against you all the you know, Father time. Frank Mirrors are guests on the American Shaman show before I let you go. It's a thrill of a lifetime to be able to talk to you on the program today, But I gotta ask you I mean, when I grew up, but I'm 61 years old boxing was the thing and slowly, slowly, slowly you have see mixed martial arts has replaced that. What is it about the appeal? And the excitement about the UFC and mixed martial arts that you think captured America and the world's imagination. Well, you know, I think boxing before used to have a fear of guys losing A guy could be 32 1 and I sucks, And I think that they saw it was in the May because we don't protect people in the UFC. And then the top shows they, you know the best fight the best. Well, that means people lose. I mean, that's like finding an Olympic wrestler who's undefeated. It's difficult because of a certain level when everybody is that good. People end up taking shots and and and and lose, But it still doesn't take away with how great they are. So we get to actually see really great fights were you know in the past with boxing because the different promoters Will protect their guys all the way to the titles. You have a guy who's fighting and I go. Hey, man, this guy's you know, he's two fights away. Maybe a fight away from title Contingency. We're gonna feel fight tonight and then all the sudden you see the guy who's fighting like what they do get. The local bartender is that that guy is really gonna step in the ring with that guy. And that's what you would see. In boxing. We're now whatever may your guys that are, you know, they're years from a title shot. They're fighting other killers, and we get to watch that his fans He really got tested and push. That element has made it to where it's made it more entertaining and not just one sided battle that we see in boxing. I love it. Frank Mir two time UFC heavyweight champion thrill for me and I'm sure matters Well, they have you on the show, The American Shaman CBD show heard every Sunday and Wtmj Thank you so much, Frank.
