"randy arose" Discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast
"Who is young and will be on the team for a long time. I would not be angry if I'd done that. I don't think there's really much difference between where I ranked him and what I would rank if I could do it again. But it's the kind of name where you could sneak him out of the top 50. Take off someone kind of boring no offense to whoever I would take off for him, Randy arose or Anna maybe, boring now because he's no longer a postseason Joe democracy. And just have the interesting guy on there in case he pops next year. So I would put him on there. Turk's Google for the same reason. He also, we didn't put him on the honorable mention list, not because he wasn't an honorable mention, but because when I went and grouped all these people up, there wasn't a group that he fit into and then he just kind of fell onto the cutting room floor and didn't get into any list. I don't think he would have made the list to be honest, but he probably should have been on there. And I lied, I'm actually going to give you two more people. One Rafael Devers. I'm not going to lose sleep over that one because he only has a year and a half left on his contract. And I think that will really limit his trade return, but he's great and I think I should have done more mentioning that he's great. I guess I called him Juan Soto with every lever turned down slightly in the honorable mention right up. He did. So, you know, that's nice. But yeah, I think Deborah's could have been on there and I wouldn't have looked weirdly at it. And Andres Jimenez was on there, and I took him off at the end. And yeah, I don't know. If he was 48th, maybe people would have complained less about him not being on there. I think he's pretty good. Kind of doubt the power is real. I think those are the guys where in a year I'll be like, oh, like they were probably top 50 people, and I should have made it a top 54, but unlike Eric, I don't like making lists of non round numbers. So speaking of unique players, you did have to put Shohei Ohtani somewhere. And you couldn't split him into shohei the pitcher show hey the hair you had to figure out how to put the combined Shohei Ohtani who theoretically is also on the trade market. I know there was a report in the New York Post by John Hammond and Joel Sherman on Thursday, which basically amounted to the angels are not hanging up the phone if people are calling them to ask about our tiny now. It's still put the likelihood of an Otani trade at the deadline as very slimmer, almost zero, but it is not impossible. It sounds like one of the executives who is quoted here anonymously said they want something like your top four prospects, which I guess makes sense, but does that change your rating of where he would go and where did he go? I guess we should say that too. Yeah, I believe I had him 26th. I think I mentioned this in my write up. I left him off of all my first lists. 'cause I don't know. If I'm sending this list around to people and trying to compare the tiny to other players, it's just like so. Impossible. He's nothing like anyone else, and one of the best methods for doing this is to think like for like, like, oh, would I rather have Sean Murphy or Will Smith? Well, Will Smith, obviously. So like, okay, let's separate them. Like much rather how close myths so let's separate them by a decent amount. Like who's like shohei Tony? Yeah, no one. So it was very difficult. I don't have any confidence in this ranking. Why would I? It's an unprecedented trade situation. I don't think that war necessarily job of capturing his value. I don't think that years of service are service time left as important with Otani because he's so unique. And I very much hesitate about projecting into the future because he's like a fragile beautiful snowflake. It seems really hard to do what he's doing. And it would shock no one if he started pitching less frequently or took some more days off. It's incredible how he's doing what he's doing and you can't really forecast him for that reason. But it wouldn't be shocking to me if you're in the top ten for trade return because again, there are no other chalet honeys. Right, so I just don't know. If he gets your top four prospects, that means that either the White Sox got of or he should be higher on the list. I don't think that he will fetch that. The White Sox prime system is not great. Sorry. Yeah, that's the joke if people are like, why is Meg laughing at that? 'cause like, yeah, that farm is bad. And it's also doesn't have any obvious top end, like some of the other bad foreign systems. I don't know. I don't think he will move. I think that request is more of a like, you know, somebody calls you up and they ask what you want for, I don't know, your favorite T-shirt or something. I don't know why they would do this. And you just name something arbitrarily high, so they'll stop bothering you. Someone calls you up and asks you what you would want for the first pick in a fantasy draft. Did you say, well, I'd want your first pick and your second pick in your third pick and your fourth pick. So like, okay, then they don't call you anymore. I kind of get the sense that what would it take for a tiny? Well, let's start with your top four prospects, is kind of that. Like, stop calling us what these crappy offers for a guy at the back end of the top hundred plus a team control outfield.

They'd have to wake up earlier just a sheet. You just fade me now. I can find my food elsewhere. It's not just a feed me. I can afford my food and get it elsewhere. But i'm just saying that if they're a business wants to survive you know i mean i would. I would open earlier because there's a lot of people that are in back at work. I mean a diner did diners all over the place at all before. Seven o'clock twenty four hours. Twenty four hours jillian so not just the feed me. I'm not a baby. I could feed myself. We're gonna play nine innings. It's more fun you guys rolling. But you've you really dig deep when you're not and they weren't latter day one interesting thing. I said the allen the warm up show so the astros have the best batting average against fastballs in major league. Baseball to ninety two is the number as a team. No one's better than them lance lynn. Through seventy six pitches yesterday in a loss. How many do you think we're fastballs. And how many were off speed pitches i would say he. Seventy six seventy six pitches. Yes i'm gonna say. He threw six fastballs. That's what al said. Yes what do you think. Gee i'm gonna say he. Threw forty five fastball. Seventy four of seventy six pitches were fastballs. Oh wow i only bring it up. Because the allied we're in such an analytical day and age we small. Wouldn't you think they knew how good the astros were hitting the fastball ball. And he would do something else or just makes it up more than that was interesting that the whole analytics craze. While it's there it maybe it's not as impactful as you'd think it when it comes to a player by this way by the way this guy. Shane baz yeah. So he's a rookie for tampa bay as well. And his fastball is being compared to that of caracol so he'll be with the yankees in about five years. "A package surrounding malik smith he also acquired randy arose arena from the cardinals when the cardinals were becoming out of favor. And all of these guys arose arena. What al mvp now. Being a favorite to win rookie of the year so there are just able to turn people over down there in tampa bay. It's certainly very impressive. What neander stunned. And now the terms of the deal. They have not been disclosed. We don't know how much money he's gonna get but he received a promotion and is now the president of baseball operations up from general manager and vice president. So shout out. Eric and it certainly looks like he is there to stay in tampa bay jumping around the league now. Salvador perez continues to crush the baseball. I mean this guy is shooting up the charts when it comes to home runs for a catcher in a season. He now has forty two. And this comes with a little bit of a caveat here right if you look up some of these records the most home runs in a season for a catcher quote unquote catcher his forty five by johnny bench for the nineteen seventy rats. Well he hit thirty eight of those forty five as a catcher obviously playing first base. But if you play. A certain percentage of games behind the dish that constitute is being a catcher for that season so total forty five thirty eight. As a catcher you have hobby lopez for the two thousand and three braves forty three that year but forty two as a catcher which is the most as catcher in a season but second most overall and then you have salvador perez who sit forty two this year so third all time and obviously with three weeks left. It looks like he's at least gonna hit one more pass. Avi lopez could he hit four to get to forty six to pass johnny bench but salvador perez only twenty eight of the forty two. Have come as a catcher this season because he's played a little bit designated hitter so he's still qualifies as the most as a catcher when it comes to big picture but certainly fascinating couple of guys had forty one. You had todd. Hundley for the ninety six mets. He hit all forty one as a catcher roy campanella for the one thousand nine hundred fifty. Three dodgers forty of his forty one came as a catcher and then mike piazza hit forty and ninety seven for the dodgers and ninety nine for the mets in forty came as a catcher so every one of them was as a catcher. Mike piazza in both of those seasons and now when it comes to a career. Salvador perez isn't as high up on those lists of course number one is mike piazza. Four hundred and twenty seven career. Home runs three hundred and ninety six hit as a catcher johnny bench at three eighty nine hit three twenty seven as a catcher fisk kit. Three seventy six three fifty one as a catcher yogi bear up three fifty eight three zero five as a catcher. And then tied for fifth gary carter lance parrish with three twenty four and then pudge rodriguez with three hundred and eleven in seventh place and salvi. He only has a career one hundred ninety three. Now he's only thirty one years old so he plays for seven more years maybe he could get there but when it comes to a single season he's only four away from having the most quote unquote home runs from catcher during a major league baseball season. So certainly a fascinating story line to watch coming down the stretch here. But speaking of home shadow tabar pull's he hit a story book home. Run for the the dodgers against the cardinals pool. Halls was back to saint louis. Obviously he's been back before. But another return to saint. Louis and i got another standing ovation and then in his first at bat took him downtown. So that had to feel good for our pool horses he continues to rake. He's hitting home runs. He's doing exactly what he should be doing. For the dodgers we talked about you know the angels. He wanted to play every day. Well he's not going to be doing that with the dodgers and he's certainly fitting the mole and winning the clip. He's winning makes it a little bit easier to not play every day as opposed to be under five hundred like he would be with the angels. The blue jay as a squad. They've gotten hot. They won six in a row heading into wednesday nights recording. This late here on wednesday. They're continuing to beat up on the yankees. Only a handful of games back now in the wildcard two and a half out in the wild card. So i gave you guys my goals for each team and i said for toronto. Just make the postseason. I didn't know if that'd be possible but they're certainly making a push here over the past couple of days and then you also had blake snell. Who had a no hitter going in a perfect game into the seventh inning on tuesday nights l. to millie striking out eleven angels and he had fifteen consecutive no hit innings. So he had gone. Let's see what was it. I think six or seven in the one start. Maybe it wasn't fifteen. Maybe was thirteen but because he went six and then seven no hit innings to come out. I think thirteen straight no hit innings over the course of two different starts almost fourteen innings but yet thirteen consecutive hitless frames set a franchise record for the padres breaking the mark of twelve and a third set by bill. Laxed it back in one thousand nine hundred seventy four so snell in his last three outings. He's turned it around. He's got a one one eight five. Era in his last three outings and throwing a no knows pretty much last two times. Of course we've got broken up in. The seventh ended up losing the game in a four. Nothing lost to the angels is. The offense. didn't show up for san diego but san diego getting blake. Snell back coming down. The stretch here is exactly what they're going to need if they're going to hold off the reds to win that second wildcard as they have a tough stretch here with the giants and dodgers remaining on the schedule so another episode of The baseball podcast here with me in another update on wander franko. He drew a walk in the seventh inning. On tuesday night to extend his on base streak to.

And here's what we can't i was thinking about. Okay we always talk about personnel and rosters and and and the people that the hitting all single on so. I said let's leave pitching we talk about. Bullpen starting pitching of everybody's healthy the five teams that are in right now. Yankees red sox tampa has to and stayed same online ov make sure and who's a fifteen i leave out All chicago white sox. Yeah asked like we got the postseason schedule yesterday. That's officially out. How it lineup. He's suppose he's starting tomorrow. It'd be astra's white sox at minimum park okay. Also day for game. Seven of the series november third. Last time we played last time we played world series november and it was last year definitive anonymous. It was actually the astros while you're shopping preparing getting your boxes stove top stuffing for. I never thought that night in two thousand seventeen dodger stadium. You don't think about it's like oh it's actually november first. They're playing a world series. Game is weird when look back host halloween. Yeah so that. That's the key the key and we get that's the case right now with the scheduling all right so we got five teams in the american league playoffs right now and the old dreaded if it ended today and so we went down the lineup and said okay. Who's the best at each position. Not what you'd have over the next ten years right now. Their performance year take into account. Now you gotta decide at home and we're deciding here us three in the majority rules in this. So that's the guy that we pick. We gotta decide at home if well are you. Do you want just the guy who's a great deal taken playoffs. they need a great defensive catcher. Do i want good defensive catcher but a guy hits better all those things come into play so at catcher while we said if it was one dimensional all maldonado all the time defensively but this year based on. What they've done and sanchez has got power but liability on defenses anina. We gave it to him slightly over. Maldonado yeah third base. It was denver's and it was easy. Yeah and he said a a monster. He's an mvp candidate. Bregman hasn't had time but that's just the way it is. I know peacedale. I'll take bregman performance wise this year. That would just be while we'd love him next year different story and maybe down the stretch but for a full season denver's wins that shortstop The the really the hardest competition for the tim anderson. Good player strikes out a lot. And then you've got bogart's and korea. And i and i probably i would end up gone courageous because the defensive glove and arm agreed postseason. Resume that he's put up just as close as maldonado is does zeno is just as close as bogart system. Second base while you look at the tampa and say that's probably through causes your marketing but with everything reason right everything involved. It's out to young and it's pretty easy decision tyler. On board with all those. We decided right. Yeah i was on board okay. First base was interesting. Probably our longest toughest conversation honestly guys grand thing but because you got what you value at first base well we got a guy who we know. When he's on a roll can carry. It can carry lineup. He can't and the even their best player meaning yuli. Yeah when we know that he when he's right. Will i guess we say what is right but for the most part this season he's had a pretty good season right for a long time. Now star i two and a half months me a little bit of a wall. But he's tired. He's hitting three sixteen. He's got he's got no. Ps at eight sixty two. It's down to him and we decided to break it was now straight dealer's choice on what you want. That's honestly that's right. I take a break on. I think i would end up going. I think ended up going yuli. Because i i want i have become over the years i value so much in the postseason contact. And there's still there's still a lot of swing and miss braves and defensively you lose better. I oh you here's and Let's see a brave got what won. Mvp last year's down year he's always got mash right. He's hitting to fifty seven. He's getting he's got he's got a lower oh. Ps newly. i know that. I mean the homerun difference is thirteen. Home runs to fifty seven. Psa twenty-five he's got one hundred twenty three strikeouts struck out. What's the total here fifty two times and he's walked four. I would say if you're just looking for what this team does. You'd put great yulia. I i guess. I i just have a hard time. Picking guys of today's new after watching the have so much in the postseason based on they don't strike out. It matters to me right. I think it's an tyler bray you. I don't sit on the fence much. I'm sitting on the fence on this and everything okay. Better glove yuli better. Batting average elite better contact yuli could hit belong ball but if i need one swinging the bat it's braille and now i'm gonna make my decision based on what was tom. Glavin told me I've told you this. I can always get out guys who swam as power hitters but the hardest thing to do is get out contacted hitters on a regular basis. You is one of the toughest post-season de stress that that puts on a pitcher eight nine pitcher bats tempted overnight last yesterday tied. If i made this decision yes dad probably gonna bring you. But the more i think about it and situational baseball and scooping balls at first base little things. I should become big things little things. We don't talk enough about. I go slightly left field. Let feel so. It'd be michael brantley with the astros as your primary guy. Three sixteen eight forty three eight twenty seven if you go to tampa. They're primarily filled with this year has been randy arose arena to seventy two sixteen fifty five eight. Oh two oh. Ps he's pretty good in the postseason. Yeah he's he. I mean that was. I think it was one series type of okay craziness he's got. I don't know who you put for the yankees honestly because there when you go to baseball reference in terms of who's their primary left fielder guys played forty five games. it's har- three twelve. You're not picking them. The red sox left field now is do go to eighty seven twelve home runs. Forty eight runs batted in solid for them. But it's not in the conversation. Oh seven ninety one and then you go to the white sox there's is this is the one. This is a jimenez now right as he played left field because the guy guys guys played the most. There has been andrew von this year. He two fifty seven for fifteen and forty three but voices. Coming back is twenty five games to ninety three six and twenty four. Because well. we're going by this year and get the taliban play right contacting. You'll him in is in twenty four games as twenty four strikeouts. Yeah listen i i know he's. He's got the potential to roll now talking changer. Over the course of this season you can't choose especially with the injuries and not playing a lot of games If i'm talking ten years i get it but it brantley the guy has to be i would take centerfield. Centerfield for the astros. Of course i mean. You're giving it the chaz mccormick to sixty eleven forty two them all together. It's.

"But you also have really young guys like jonathan india. Like a jose barrio. And i know barrio obviously doesn't play as much as kyle farmer does short. I mean kyle. Farmer i mean he was born in one thousand nine so he's not that young but he's still. I mean if actually that. Read steve really. Isn't that young but do have some really good prospects like hundred rain coming up. The jonathan india is is the guy that they brought up this year they and they also have shogo akiyama who a good outfielder forum is just right now with tyler. Knick win and then center tyler. Aikman's a great defensive center fielder allocates. It's as simple as that for the American league cy young award or not cy young award the american league rookie of the year. The award was predicted to go to randy arose. Raina i mean. He was the number one prospect in all of baseball. He got off to really slow start and who didn't get off to a slow start. Els all these garcia at the at a texas. I think he has a pretty much locked up. And i think i mean like he could hit thirty home runs this year. He's i mean but he is a twenty eight year old rookie. So he's like right in his prime. You could make an argument. For like casey mayes or luis garcia at a houston. Honestly like i would probably go with luis garcia but i do think that all these garcia kinda has locked up as of right now randi arena a little bit of dark horse out in the al accu battle a great a great option as well but in the grand scheme of things. I don't really think that it's much of a real real race in the american league wild-card much like i don't think it's any kind of erase. Really four. Eighty buddy to win in the al other shohei otani in that at the i mean itani has elite league in home runs and he's also their number one starter. It feels like he's playing. Mlb the show like legitimately. You can do that on. Mlb the show. And i try it like dynamic difficulty. My is on everything. Like i'm playing it like everybody else. And oh my gosh. It is so hard to be shohei ohtani. I don't know how he doesn't out in the nfl. Though it's it's different because death really. The front runner diocese absolutely the front runner but he was out for a while. And did he give enough space to like. Did he leave enough space. Open for a A max muncie. I mean maximum. See quietly leads everybody in be war and left handed. Slugger has a nine seventy one opie s escape to bolt capable defender at multiple positions. You also freddy freeman you. Also kind of have trade turner. Turner is in the batting title conversation right now. Some dark horses. I mean buster. Posey's having a great year. Kris bryant was having a great year bryce harper. I've been kind of making a push for bryce harper. You can also make the case for joey votto also nicholas cassiano says well but neither of those guys were really getting much love in that aspect. But i think that i mean. Turner freeman muncie. Those are all very good options. Battiste definitely does not have this locked up like shohei does. It's going to take a lot. I think for show to lose it and fruit to go to to guerrero as good as guerrero has been this year. Now we're going to take a short break at least for you guys for me. I'm going to wait until the twenty second. So that way i can give you guys the most accurate standings updates before i up to upload the episode. Excuse me for stuttering. Over my words. But i will see you guys in.

"And i was watching at some of the the rhythms right because this is a slow time so man i was getting an unusual number of royals highlights right. So you're like because they gotta fill it up with something for an hour and there's just not an hour of stuff to do it with and so i'm watching and i'm super informed right now on baseball last night's development we've got the giants were and twenty-five entering the ninth. They won last night against the dodgers. So they're no longer owen. Twenty-five randy arose arena has had seven home runs against the orioles in eight games. I feel like that's the last ten years oriels baseball needed to put stats on the screen. Right i mean is that stat. They're just doing a bunch of to keep it going to keep the m- the machine moving but in the middle of this i saw a commercial. Maybe it's common to you guys. It was not common to me. Number two should be easy to do and it's a little ukulele and it's super happy. It's a super happy song. And i saw it a couple of times. It's fifteen seconds long. And i'm like wow that's a good commercial they're gonna get you fast because it's just nobody's watching commercials anymore. It's fifteen seconds of music and what's your product number. Two should be easy to do and then they go to pain. When you're trying to poo going sometimes feels like you push through pineapple or to a pineapple or to whom song fifteen seconds. Go to the bathroom better. And then the next commercial a little while later was similar number two should be easy to do and then there's the phrase pinching off a porcupine are you pinching off a porcupine and it sung happy and with a ukulele and i thought to myself that is good commercial banking because they got my attention with the idea of shifting porcupines and pineapples and i'm not used to seeing that on television. Have you guys seen this commercial. I thought to myself what i immediately thought to myself is my god the singer of this little song. What does she think about. What's happened to her life and her career as musician when she's talking about pinching off a porcupine and sometimes it feels like you're shitting two pineapples. Here's a happy song with the ukulele. The second pineapple would hurt more than the first the first one kind of like wrestling first one's bad jefferson's a new experience. Second time you're just kinda you know. At least what the you're ready you're braced for what's about to happen. Whoa wait. What was the product that was being sold while. I'm not good at that. If roy had seen this commercial it's a product that helps you go to the bathroom. It started with a c. The reason we learned that roy is good at these ridiculous. Bits of minutia is because that was the starting point when it comes to commercial television i have no retention for those kinds of things and every time ask roy would know the answer. Next time we ask. Roy will know the answer but this product that they were sit that that was sitting in the middle of the shitting. There was being done all around it in sports highlights and what i saw was a commercial that i was like man that would make me. Are we watching commercials anymore. I don't know but that met by the way it's called crap allot They did not call crap. A lot and rapidly. I have the commercial here now. We're generally Discouraged from playing commercials. But i feel like this company wouldn't mind. We played commercial this massive platform right like. They're probably oh cool. Thanks for the free advertising fired off in a second you can thank you for finding it quickly but put it at at lebatardshow when pooping pineapples which one hurts more. The first pineapple or question is never been or or the second pineapple okay. I've the part about this confused. Me and i thought for sure you guys have been watching this commercial again and again so you guys are telling me watching sports center for the first time in six years i just saw the first of its kind commercial on something that none of you've seen it because i know you guys are watching sports center..

Bogart's and the red sox then randy arose arena leads the raise against jose ramirez and the indians. It all begins saturday at three thirty eastern on f s one and the fox sports. Young's red sox. This weekend was wild. What's what's new. Cedric sabinas played over a decade in the nba was an all star in an nba slam. Dunk champion and it's interesting. His story so he played initially he played with dirk nowitzki and the dallas mavericks and dirk. Adjust come over from abroad into the states. He was young and skinny and talented and eager and ernest. But he wasn't the star that he later became and that is now the honest story. You get drafted. The team is patient. The mavericks were patient and tried to put the right pieces around him and now like that. Twenty eleven mavs team which finally put it all together too little lightning in a bottle..

"Ninety five point four and yu darvish at ninety four point eight and he runs faster than randy arose arena. He's at twenty eight point nine with the rose arena twenty eight point seven so three guys who are considered to be close to the best at their perspective positions or per perspective tools so to speak otani's best in each one of that and he leads the majors in home runs like we mentioned but he also leads the major league and bunt hits. He's four for four when bunting for a hit so is one hundred percent success rate when he bumps for a hit as well and until this year no player even babe ruth ever hit thirty home runs and made ten starts on the mount so babe ruth considered one of the best two way players of all time never hit thirty bombs and made ten starts in the same season and otani is done it in just eighty one games so far this year. So he's done that in half a season and no other player in the history of baseball has done it for an entire one sixty two. He's the first american league player ever with thirty one. Home runs at least thirty. One home runs in twelve stolen basis by the all star break so a lot of guys out there thirty thirty guys. Forty forty guys. But nobody's ever hit at least thirty one home runs and twelve stolen bases before the all star break i. It's just fascinating and on the mound. He has one of the most unhittable pitches and all of baseball. The major league home run leader otani also throws the toughest pitch to hit batters or hitting point zero eight three against his splitter which ties tyler. Glass now's curveball. For the lowest batting average on any pitch with at least seventy at bats ending in this particular pitch in fact otani has thrown. Let's see here. Three hundred eighty nine splitters in his career and allowed only nine hits for a point zero six nine career batting average on that pitch. No batter has ever hit a home. Run off of otani splitter throughout the course of his career and after three hundred and forty seven career games hitting and pitching otani has a higher slugging percentage than babe ruth did at this particular point. In his career otani said point five five two with the great bambino coming in at point. Five four one so again just absolutely outstanding numbers otani a- slugging point six seven four against left handed hitters only three left handed hitters have ever slugged that high against lefties in a full season. Stan musial did it. Twice babe ruth and lou gehrig each did it one time. Otani has thrown almost as many fastballs as he seen as a hitter. He's throwing five hundred fifteen fastballs and he's seen five hundred forty eight as a hitter. He has hit five times as many extra-base hits off a fast fastballs that he's allowed. He's got twenty five extra base hits as a hitter and he's only allowed five as a pitcher and just looking at comparisons to to all time greats when it comes to major league baseball through the first three hundred thirty two career games hitting willie mays had seventy two home runs two hundred and eighteen. Rbi's and a point five six five slugging percentage. So where does shohei ohtani compared to that. Well otani has seventy seven home runs five more than willie mays two hundred thirteen. Rbi's is five less than willie mays in a point. Five five two. Slugging percentage so only thirteen percentage points less when it comes to slugging as well for one of the all time greats across major league baseball as well as in their first twenty. Four games pitching roger. Clements had a ten in six record. Shohei otani is only at seven and four so slightly less decisions through their first twenty four games but era. Roger clemens was four point two three shohei otani is at three point nine. Seven and then. Total strikeouts roger. Clements had one hundred and forty three and otani has one hundred forty nine so he's got a better. Era in more strikeouts than roger clements through his first twenty four starts and more home runs than willie mays through his first. Three hundred and thirty two games at the plate and just all of those statistics are just absolutely mind boggling for again what show has been able to do here and he's really taken off this year. I mean again if you look at his percentile rankings when it comes to his peers for twenty twenty one when it comes to batting. His average exit velocity is in the ninety six percentile and the closer you are to one. Hundred is obviously a good thing. His maximum exit velocity is in the one hundred percentile. So nobody's hit a ball harder than shohei otani has this year his hard. Hit percentage ninety eight th percentile. His ex w. o. B. a. r. as woah expected. Whoa buzz in the one hundred th percentile. His barrel percentage is in the one hundred. Th percentile is expected. Batting average the ninetieth percentile his expected. Slugging percentage one hundred th percentile his. K. percentage or strikeout percentage is all the way down in the sixteenth percentile. So the guy doesn't strike out. His walk percentage seventy th percentile. So not only is the guy hitting the ball hard when he's making contact. He's walking more than the average hitter. He striking out way less than the average hitter across major league baseball. His whiff percentage swing and miss percentages in the sixth percentile so when the guy swings his usually making contact even if he's fouling the ball off he's not swinging and missing on basically anything and is chased rate forty second percentile and sprint speed ninety second percentile so the guy is fast. He's hitting the ball hard. His barrel percentage this year is at twenty five point six his previous career high with sixteen point four so almost ten percentage points higher than his previous best his exit velocities at ninety three five which is at a career-high his maximum. Let's see exit vilo as one. Nineteen which again top. One percent of the league everything. It just screams absolute freak when it comes to his. His stat cast in his percentages. And everything when you look at baseball savant. And now looking at his percentiles. As a pitcher average exit velocity thirty five thirty fifth percentile. Maximum exit velocity twenty seven th percentile hard. Hit percentage twenty fifth percentile. Walk percentage fourteen th percentile. I mean this guy is just an absolute monster. In both instances right. His slugging percentage is giving up eighty fifth percentile. Barrel rate seventy th percentile. K. percentage eighty four th percentile whiff rate eighty four th percentile so the guy is getting swings and misses on the mound when people are actually making contact with what he's throwing the average velocity and maximum exit velocity or in the thirty fifth and twenty seven th percentile. So he's not giving up any hard hit percentages it's just man his barrel percentile against six point five. His average exit velocity eighty. Nine point seven. So guys aren't able to square him up. He's throwing more fastballs. Then he has in years past. he's also using his split finger fastball more than in years past and he's gone away a little bit from his slider so he's changed his pitching repertoire to absolutely. Just be filthy in both instances and i mean my goodness. This kid is just an absolute joy to watch and it's a shame he's out in. La similar to mike trout. You have the conversation when you're on the east coast. You haven't seen this guy play. "Thirty four and thirty four th the central thirty nine thirty two thirty nine and thirty two from milwaukee in the cubs like. That's kind of crazy. And then we go to the nfl west who has both the worst teams in the league. And the best teams early you have arizona whose twenty and thirty and fifty two their role losing streak continues as they are eleven and twenty one at home which is terrible but good enough to be better than their road split which is nine in thirty one. I mean granted. They played nine less home games and they have road games. But i mean still like that road split like arizona. Just not good this year. that's that's just is what it is. They're twenty and fifty two twenty five and a half games out of first place twenty and a half games out of the wildcard there minus one hundred and six which is good enough for being for being a difference of two hundred and twelve runs for them to catch and thai and tie night even to pass houston for their best run differential in the league but colorado they are thirty and forty two in fourth place. They're fifteen and a half games out of first they're ten and a half out of wildcard. They're five and five out of their last ten that he lost one game. I will say though that Arizona there on a six game losing streak and believe that they're losing streak on the road has reached more than twenty games Which is really. It's really different than an air. That's a lot different than the arizona. Team that i was expecting to To see at this point in the season where Earlier in the season we madison bumgarner. Throw a seven inning. No hitter and the team looked really really hot. And since then they just have not been the same colorado. They we of figure that this is where they would be Thirty games thirty game. Thirty three team win Through the i seventy two games of the year like this is about. We're expecting them to be san diego though. There's forty one and thirty two five games behind first place but they do have the second wildcard spot. They're four and six out of their last ten that they're feeling really good about themselves. Winning three in a row they're plus seventy one and run differential. And right now i'm really only talking about run differentials for teams that actually deserve it like a the white sox who were plus ninety four tampa bay plus seventy seven. Heck even toronto and boston plus thirty eight and plus forty. I'm not going to be talking about teams. That are negative. Really and i'm like at cleveland really doesn't deserve to be talked about it. They're only plus two I mean the mets are plus twenty one milwaukee's minus four like. There's not a lot of difference in run differential right now but when you have a team that has plus seventy one run differential. It's it's pretty evident that you have a a team that is pretty pretty solid. They're forty one and thirty two. Like i said five games back i. They are winners of three in a row though going into a game against cincinnati here the dodgers. They are forty three and forty two in second place right here. We're and a half games out of first. And three and a half games ahead of san diego for that wildcard. They're eight and two out of their last ten and winners of tune row. San francisco is in first place once again. They're forty five and twenty six seven three out of their last hand. They did lose their most recent game. Going to our spring training are not our spring training our wildcard stats for the nfl. So right now. Our division leaders with the best record in baseball they get a w. that is the san francisco giants they would be the number one overall seed in all of the Earned both both leagues. Their forty five and twenty six. The mets would win the east. They're twenty six and twenty eight then the cubs and milwaukee would be tied right now at thirty nine and thirty two then. Our wildcard leaders it would be. The dodgers were. Were three and a half games up on san diego. San diego would be that second. Wildcard spot there on the inside looking out and the cubs in milwaukee are both right on their tails. Cincinnati is four games back and saint louis four and a half as or the phillies for that one so ending. Today's episode we'll go over some stats talk league leader in average right now that he's vladimir guerrero junior hitting three thirty nine followed by. Excuse me it's actually jesse winker hitting three forty four followed by nick casinos hitting three forty one in second place in third place is guerrero junior heating three thirty nine michael brantley enforce place hitting three thirty seven his his career three thirty seven number. I feel like michael bradley. Every time i think of michael brantley i think he's either hurt. Or he is hitting three thirty seven with four fifty on base percentage like i. I don't know why. I just envision him hitting in the three thirty and then having a ridiculously high on base percentage but adam frazier is in fifth place the he is hitting two or three twenty four And then on going on. Base percentage real quick or lea leader in on base percentage heating. Four forty four. Your on base percentages vladimir guerrero junior. Then you have. Max muncie at a four eighteen jesse winker at a four sixteen pays ronald cuny junior and johann moncada johan moncada and out the top five with a four on four on base percentage slugging percentage tattoos junior in first with a six seventy five in second place vladimir guerrero junior with a six seventy one shohei otani in third place. That is a heck of a trio at the top of the league. leaders for slugging percentage. Six seventy five six seventy one and a six forty three Slugging percentage for all three of those really young superstars in fourth place matt olson. A six twenty. And then jesse winker in fifth place with a six eighteen radical new junior in sixth place. The only other player in baseball right now to have a slugging percentage over six hundred going into our opie s are opie s leaders. Right now are vladimir guerrero junior with a one one hundred and nine eight eleven own nine slope a fernando tatis junior in second place with a ten thirty nine opie s jesse winker in third place with a ten thirty five ronald cuny junior with a ten four and fourth place and then matt olsen in fifth place with eight ten zero to the only other player within oh. Ps above one thousand or league leader in stolen bases so far is whip. Mary field with twenty ronald a- kunia and isaiah kiner fillet full philippa. Excuse me with fifteen peace with. They're in the top. Three or league. Leader in walks is money. Grand doll with fifty four. He is a one to one strikeout to walk. Ratio fifty four walks and fifty four strikeouts. Second place. joey. Gallo with fifty three walks. Max muncie and carlos santana round out the top five with forty six walks a piece leading in strikeouts going top to bottom here. Randy arose arena with eighty four. Joey gallo with eighty six brandon. Low with eighty-eight matt chapman in second place with ninety one and then happier by as with ninety five strikeouts. See i love him defensively. but i. I hate the fact that he is a real a real all-star contender and he's hitting two twenty nine with like eight walks. Sixteen.

"Oh you know you. Just look at the numbers. Know the ninth inning. The same as as the the fifth inning. But you know it's it's not These humans not machine what men not machines that was like tony larussa quote for a long time. But not i mean. I'm excited that. Alex races healthy and he his stuff. Is you know as good as it was when he was a big time prospect and if he can just continue to work on the command he can be an asset this year in the bullpen and ben heck finesse at going into next year and they still have them under control through two thousand twenty three. I believe That didn't he just he just signed his first arbitration eligible deal. Yeah i mean if if it wasn't for that first year in two thousand sixteen. When he came up and was healthy through forty six innings he would still qualify for rookie of the year considerations. Because he'd have been because he'd only have like thirty seven innings or he he he would've twenty seven innings going into this year. Well the two guys that won rookie of the year last year. technically qualified. They're not allowed to win it. Two years in a row but randy arose arena qualifies rookie of the year. It's it's just a weird year with with the pandemic in there but yet back to carlos martinez been. I felt even coming into this season. I felt like people were discounting him a bit. Like you're you're really going to challenge his ability based on twenty innings in two thousand and twenty amid a by a pandemic and he had kobe the hospital. I believe a few times for it. The guy had of an er a point three six in the first eight years of his career. Strikeouts are down this year. Which is kinda strange and of loss is down. It's actually from where it was last year. So that's purging. He moves further and further away from that shoulder issue. But you're right. The best case scenario for carlos is just to be a guy that can get innings every night and i would take that allows two runs a night if there's a blow up here and there there's a jamir in there that that's what you want is consistent starting pitching from him because it seems like every week. We talk chris. We talk about how worried. At least the first three weeks of the season we talked about how we were about that starting rotation not being able to work late into games which taxes the bullpen men if you can script bullpen out and you know. Have gaga's radius hicks helmsley tyler web. Emend they're all fresh. Then you feel like you. Can you know if you take a lead early in the game. You're going to close it out. And you know to have carlos being able to like pitch into eighth inning. Or was he pitching today. Yeah he pitched into the eighth scott yanked with one out in the eighth. It's it's crazy. He's twenty nine. You won't turn thirty until the end of september and just for context standpoint. adam wainwright's age twenty nine season. He missed it was two thousand eleven when he had tommy john right so great great years before that but chris carpenter his first year with the cardinals he was twenty nine years old two thousand four his first year with the cardinals before that he was a five hundred pitcher with a yar around five in in toronto and had never made an all star team. Like i'm not comparing. I know it's apples and oranges max. Scherzer had his breakout your at age twenty eight. I'm just saying like we take for granted. How young he is dude..

"We get stunned. It doesn't take much to surprise this bouncing baby boy. This is honestly the most stunned. I have ever been on the show to a news buddy, a show is stunned to a news. Here we go with another popular submission. Even Captain Morales sent me this one just minutes apart yesterday morning. Kevin Andre McKenzie was charged Monday with trying to smuggle 35 live finches from Africa. Mackenzie was caught at JFK with the tiny birds in hair curlers and then hidden in his jacket and his pants. Now I've mentioned this before I watch more than one show on Naji. Oh, it's about the U. S. Border Patrol and whether it's Mexico and the U. S were airports, the stuff they deal with. In terms of smugglers. I've seen people Do this before, Put these tiny birds in the hair curler, and then they put a piece of mesh on top, and then they hang them in their clothes to try and get them in the country. Didn't know why they did it. This is why they did it. These finches air from Guiana, and they are highly coveted for their singing skills, apparently much better singers than American finches, So these birds eventually end up in singing competitions. Second parks around New York City, at least where people actually bet fairly significant amounts of money on which bird is going to be the better singer. The guy that got caught those faces 20 years in jail for doing this good, so it's not worth it for him. But if you get it through, apparently, you could make some cash on singing African finches comic glory. Apparently, these finches can sell up to $10,000. A piece of this guy was sitting on a lot of money with 35 finches. But it's just sickening. You're gonna stuff birds and hair curlers now, thankfully. Kenbrell, but they can't flap their wings of shoved in this thing for entire trip from Deanna, but it's pathetic. It's gruesome. It's Animal abuse. It's awful and this'll guy should suffer the consequences of 20 years. My question, though, is how do you stop 35 finches from chirping. How do you not hear the 35? Different birds are in your jacket and your socks. Is that the dead giveaway on the flight when you start Hearing 35 birds chirping your seat and in your coat, especially if they're great singers. I mean, basically, you could have the bird version of boys to men on your back. It's your flight across, spot up down attempt to do Babe. Babe, How the hell do you keep 35 bird from saying anything If you go through the X ray machine, and you walked through T s a and board a flight, Ripley, check for broods. Raina. Hey. Yeah, I'll see. I'll see e overhead then overhead. I'll see. I'll see. Okay. Hello. I'm in the room were hanging out. I'm in your basement, but, uh Those finches could crush us in a cappella competition. It's perfect for the finches from Guiana, the finches. Oh, good job knowing how many pitch perfect. There have been all about it. I knew that, too. We've only had one member India show history that could out sing the finches, but he who shall not be named, is gone forever. Well, if that's the kind of person who would smuggle finches JFK to join him in Central Park thinking Yeah. You go and challenge the finches in the park. I can sing better than you bird. And you're a little, uh, Wait a second. You're singing Frank Sinatra again? No, that's just the finches in my It's a guy who hits his name is Randy arose Arena..

"We're here each and every week three at the same time talking the biggest names in sports. Let's continue our conversation with Curtis Granderson, former major League baseball All Star, of course, also president of the players, Alliance, Curtis, You know, especially the perspective of being retired as you As you look at the state of baseball and sort of sticking with the activism theme of it. You know, the MBA gets a lot of credit for this. You know whether it's LeBron James or other players who have been, you know, so vocal and have used their platforms. You know, baseball, you know, maybe doesn't get all of the attention. That it should or all the plaudits that it does. Why do you think that is And what's your perception of kind of baseball's place? You know, you described its place in the Big Four from a from a level of diversity, but What is baseball need to doom or of either from elite perspective from players Association perspective to sort of ensure that this continues, we'll definitely think that individuals like a LeBron James B, A, and even some of the players that it in the NFL. Not only are they talented individuals, they've done a lot of great things community, but they've done a great job in their respective sports and the sport itself of making sure that they're marketable. They're recognizable that they're known not only in the cities they play in, but throughout the country and throughout the world. I think that's one of the big areas where baseball has kind of struggled a little bit definitely needs to look to improve. If you think about just baseball fans in general, where you know everybody on this call grew up cheering for their teams and their respective areas. They found very regional. So whether you're a Detroit Tiger span in Boston Red Sox fan in Atlanta Braves fan you probably really knew and loved your team. But the other team didn't know too much about didn't get enhance the PM on TV that much unless they came into your ballpark, which the way our schedules are, you don't always play everybody. It makes it very challenging and difficult to know which player on that other team is doing very well. Maybe looks like you have the number that you like. Listen to the music that you like. Where is this uniform The way you like. You don't get always get a chance to see that. So I think that's one of the ways that we can start the kind of change that and it's gonna take some time. I think first and foremost, if you could make sure that every team is getting an opportunity to play on national television. ESPN. The TBS is the MLB network's of the world and playing prime time. There's some great teams that are getting an opportunity to play for example of Tampa Bay Rays last year playing in the World Series. It didn't get very many opportunities to play on the prime game. You didn't get a chance to see some of these great players that are doing amazing things out there. You finally saw in the playoffs. But at this point we've played up, you know, full season. We don't get a chance to see all these guys so Those are some of the little thing that I think that you can do to start, you know, Laying the foundations of Wow. I really like, you know that Randy arose arraign a guy from the Tampa Bay Rays. You know, he's hitting home runs. He's strong. He's got an amazing story he had covert. This year He was doing push ups, and now he's come back, and he's doing great things on the field. That story gets lost that he's not getting a chance to play in front of everybody. So those are some little things. I think that can easily be done to get these guys out there. So when they do speak up when they are out there trying to voice their opinions about change, people can hear it, understand it and maybe want to get behind it. Martin Luther King Day, and it's a day that many people have often and it's it's now fallen into the category of Maureen like Fourth of July Day. People have the day off, but maybe have forgotten the meaning of what it was all about, because I remember when there was the struggle to even get this as a national holiday. Can you relay your experiences of what it means to have Martin Luther King Day? It is amazing. Like you mentioned that it becomes a three day weekend. Let me plan my trips accordingly because of it. Go from there, which which is a, you know, a byproduct of it, And there's definitely nothing wrong with that. But like you mentioned, I mean, there's times where not everybody recognizes it and Understand what this individual did not only for just people of color for just rights for all people have everybody be treated to get opportunities to allow myself to become a major league baseball player to allow Just to have this conversation right now to allow the audience that's listening to be able to do so and possibly do it next to somebody that doesn't look like them and do it comfortably. Those are all different things that Martin Luther King was fighting for and pushing for and felt that we should have and Definitely shouldn't be for gotten. You don't have to take the whole day or the whole weekend to go ahead and fill Cabinet dedicate all my energy and all my time to him just a little bit of remembrance for sure, Definite goes a long way. Can't forget that. The reason that we're able to be where we are today, the penalty in part because of what he was able to do and what he stood for. My heroes were Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey. Reggie Jackson. They were the faces of Major League Baseball. On the opening day rosters this year on Lee 67 black players were on the entire rosters roughly 8%. What what has happened to the lack of black players in Major league baseball? Is it does it start at the grassroots level in Little League and high school? Is there no interest or is their lack of opportunity that there's a big question, And I think there's a lot of avenues of what's causing that nose. Actually two teams that started the 2020 season without a black player on their opening day roster, the Kansas City Royals in Tampa Bay Rays that even put that into even more perspective. And the percentages as you mentioned around 67 guys playing. I think it averaged out to about 8% off the league was African American, and then you look at the draft that happened this summer. 8% of the players drafted were African American. The numbers have been very consistent across the board. There hasn't been an uptick on it now. There has been a lot of talk about Hey, maybe at the grassroots level. We have to make sure that we concede the introduce the game. Make sure it's available. Make sure we get kids playing, but to my understanding, especially talking to a lot of our membership that is on the players alive, who has kids better in that youth baseball space. Seen kids of color that are playing the one challenge after running into is that we want to make sure that they continue to keep playing that they don't end up being priced out of this game. Whether it's from a travel standpoint, from in equipment standpoint, from accessibility standpoint, or even being scouted and recruited standpoint. Then, if they get the opportunity to play at the next level, potentially college that it could become affordable. We have players that are in the alliance that had opportunities to play college Baseball chose not to. Those two go to the draft instead because they weren't able to get that full scholarship for their ability and was going to be able to afford to go to college. But playing professional baseball was the better option for them. There's a couple little challenges that think along the way that if we could just modify a little bit here and there, but that only improves in the black community, but it improves for everybody continues to keep everyone who wants to play the game. Have the ability to do it. It was really an enjoyable and timely conversation with you were eager to learn more from some of your colleagues about everything is going on at the players lines. Good luck to you hope you'll come back and visit with us, especially as the season gets underway and Hopefully, baseball looks a little more normal and in 21 for sure. And thank you very much for having me excited that continue to see what we can do..
