"At Breaking the Glass Slipper we believe it is important to have conversations about women and issues of intersectional feminism within science fiction, fantasy and horror. To continue to do so we need your help. Please consider supporting us on Patreon. Join the conversation by following us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Hello and welcome to Breaking the Glass Slipper. I'm Charlotte Bond. I'm Megan Lee. And I'm Lucy Hounsom. From the very first tales of the supernatural, vampires have held a special place in the hearts of storytellers. Over the years they've been reinvented again and again. In movie terms we've had The Elegant and the Elfin in Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, while Gary Oldman gave us a seductive but sinister version of Dracula himself in Coppola's film. With regards to books we've had endearing but vicious vampire children in Let the Right One In, and Stephen King himself claims that his vampire novel Salem's Lot is one of his favourites, linking the dying of small towns with the curse of the vampire. With the exception of the Swedish Let the Right One In, most of our well -known vampires are decidedly Western. But in The Vampires of El Norte, Isabel Canas has created her own brand of very savage vampires that face off against Vaqueros. Isabel is joining us in this episode to talk about what inspired her Mexican vampires and what her novel says about being a woman in 1840s Mexico fighting not just against supernatural beings but against the expectations of society. Isabel, thank you so much for joining us. Please tell our listeners a little bit about yourself and your books. Thank you so much for having me. I've been looking forward to this. I love, love, love this podcast. So getting the email from my publicist saying that this was in the books, I was like, yes, I'm so excited. Oh, it's lovely to have you. I am a Mexican -American speculative fiction author. I live in the Pacific Northwest. I'm a recovering academic, so we might get a little nitty and gritty when it comes to my research and talking about folklore and the kinds of things that informed Vampires of El Norte, which is, I guess you could bill it, and it has been billed as a supernatural Western set in what is now South Texas in 1846 at the beginning of the Mexican -American war. And it's about two childhood sweethearts named Nena and Nestor who are separated at the age of 13 because of a tragedy and are thrown together again nine years later on the road to war. And they have to defend their home Rancho from threats, both human and supernatural. And the supernatural, like spoiler alert, is the vampires. I have to admit, I've read lots of vampire novels, but none quite like yours. So how are vampires traditionally represented in Mexican literature? Are they like you present them in your books, which is kind of not quite human, but humanoid and sort of vicious and savage and unnatural? Is that what they are in Mexican literature or is there a branch of them in there? Do you tell us? Well, yeah, when it comes to Mexican, when it comes to literature, I would draw a line between literature and folklore. This is my academic coming out. But also there are, I guess, many kinds of vampires when we talk about literature and folklore in Mexico. I think Mexican literature in particular, in terms of genre literature, we have Silvia Moreno -Garcia's Certain Dark Things, which features a vampire in modern Mexico City. It is fantastic. But when it comes to modern literature, there's a lot of influence from the West. The Anglo American tradition of the vampire is, of course, something that occurs in pop culture. When it comes to folklore, however, when I was researching this book, I came across some interesting stuff. The original idea that was like the seed of this novel took place in a different part of Mexico, which is where the book ended up being set, which is now South Texas, which is where my family has hailed from for generations. Originally, I was looking at more central Mexico, maybe like in the environs of Mexico City. In the state of Tlaxcala, there are legends of what are called bloodsucking witches or Tlahualpuches and these entities, I guess, could fall under the heading of vampire, given their predilection for blood. They're very different from the Western European vampire that most people are familiar with from pop culture. So I was fascinated by these creatures who are, I believe exclusively women, and their affliction is something that they are born with and that manifests with puberty. There's so much to pick apart there. When I was putting the book together, I realized that they deserve their own novel. I was kind of back to square one.

"You know who else was there was that was like an elite junior player Philip Francis. I remember seeing him thinking like this guy is national junior golf scoreboard numero uno and then Ricky, it was just like those two guys were Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson out there. They were. I remember stepping on the first T playing Ricky. I was dude. That's probably one of the most nervous first tea tea shots I've ever hit. And I step up on the T and I look around and there's probably 50 college coaches. I mean, no less than 50. And 49 of them were for Rickie Fowler. And then the chuck with chuck was over here. Let's go JP. They had the local juco guy out there for Petey just like he was close. He's like, I've never been in Rancho Santa Fe. I'm not allowed. I might as well go out here and we'll pretend I'm watching somebody. Yeah, Philip Francis. I just looked it up. Dude, he won. Phillip Francis won this, yeah. I would do that. You didn't even go to college. Didn't he turn pro like right after you went to multiple schools. Oh, he did. Oh, it's one of those. I think that's quite a practice round. You were already committed at 14. Was I? You had the head cover and this I had the head cover. I was basically committed. I don't think I committed to a couple of years later. But I just remember, I remember hauling out on the 9th hole on after round one, and then I think I missed a couple like one or two. And you made the cut for match play and played like Ricky, didn't you? That's a hell of a memory there, SK, yeah. I actually got through in a playoff for the last few spots in match play. "You're listening to the best of the Jason Rancho look quick hit. You know, we talked a little bit earlier with our friend Tiffany Smiley, who, of course, is running for Washington State Senate. She is running against Patty Murray, who's been during this entire debacle in Afghanistan. Kind of silent if she said anything, she's not making a big splash. Hasn't really said anything that's cut through. That's caught my attention. But as we talked about earlier on this hour, the speech It was awful from Joe Biden just yelling and B and a ring around repeating himself, but most concerning to me. It was just dishonest. I mean for him to explain that what we just witnessed was an extraordinary success. Means he there has no clue what's happening on the ground, or he thinks we're all stupid and don't have access. Two news outlets completed with the biggest airlifts in history. With more than 120,000. People evacuated the safety that Newt was more than double what most experts solar possible. No, no, no, no, it's not. I mean, the context is somewhat different here, Correct? You're saying that you put yourself in a position where it was nearly impossible to get all the Americans out, which you promised to do. You did better than what folks thought you could do because you didn't start at the time that made sense. You stranded Americans there. And you want us to think that this is a success? No nation. No nation has ever done anything like it in all history. How many nations decide to tell the Taliban that they're going to leave the country and hand over seed? All the power of security to to them. How How many nations say hey, terrorist organization. I'm gonna let you handle security for us. Yeah, we could have started this process earlier and done the actual permanent er security ourselves, But we would rather have a group of terrorists do it. The only the United States had the capacity and the will and ability to do it and we did it today. Extraordinary success of this mission was due to the incredible skill bravely and a selfless courage in the United States military and our diplomats and intelligence professionals. Now what he just did. There was kind of clever even though he slurred his way through it. He's trying to frame this or any criticism of what happened would be seen as a criticism of our troops. No honest person thinks any of the criticism is geared towards our troops. There's not a single person who is acting in good faith who believes that But he's framing it specifically to get you to stop saying anything critical because they normally none of us would want to criticize troops. Almost they need to be criticized. They did nothing wrong. Everything that went wrong was not due to anything having to do with them. But everything having to do with Joe Biden, who managed to blame Trump yet again for what happened to those who would say we should have stated definitely. For years on end. Yeah, they asked. Why don't we just keep doing what we were doing? So you're referring You're you're giving a speech based on what, Like four people are saying that That's what Okay, why do we have to change anything? Cheetos Star Is a Flaming Hot Liar

"This story was originally spread by the guy Richard montanez, who's told this story for the last decade about how he invented flaming hot Cheetos. And the world has been eating it up. And if you haven't heard the story, look, the guy was working as a janitor at Frito lay and Rancho cook among at the plant out here in California. And he dreamed up this chili covered Cheeto. And his version of the story is he believed enough in himself to call up the chief executive to pitch his idea. And, you know, people tried to sabotage it, he said, but he said he out hustled him. Because he had a hundred to succeed. And of course, flaming hots became a runaway hit, and montez, rose through the ranks, and became this icon. He had a lot of speaking engagements, the guy has a lot of, what's the word? A lot of pizazz, and it's easy to see why this story is taken off. The road is charisma. It's got some charisma. And he tells this story of a Mexican American underdog who conquered the corporate world. I was a rag to riches story. People love that shit. Problem is it's not true. That's not true. And I told this story because it's becoming a Hollywood movie. And I thought, wow, this is fun. This is a really fun story. What a great no, it's all bullshit. It's all bullshit. Believe this? So this guy basically built this second career out of telling and selling this story. And he would get fees of ten grand or 50 grand per speaking engagement. He wrote a book called flamin hot the incredible true story of one man's rise from janitor to top executive. It's coming out in June. I didn't publish it himself. Random House is publishing it. There's a biography based on his life that's gonna be directed by Ava Longoria, produced by the super producer Devon Franklin. They're filming this summer. I mean, the book and the movie, there were bidding wars for this shit. And none of it's true. He didn't invent flaming hot Cheetos. The people at Frito lay said none of our records show that Richard was involved in any capacity in the flaming hot test market. We've interviewed multiple personnel who were involved in a test market and all of them indicate that Richard was not involved in any capacity in this market. It doesn't mean we don't celebrate Richard, but the facts do not support this urban

Tiger Woods seriously injured in car accident in Los Angeles but 'awake, responsive and recovering' after right leg surgery

"It was it was incredible. Um, look, this is the biggest story that we've had all day. Most of us spent most of the morning on early afternoon watching news coverage of the Tiger Woods accident and the update that we're getting is about as good as it could be after an accident. Like he had where he was driving likely at a high rate of speed is not known, but likely for the action that we had. That's what happened. He's on a stretch of road here and outside of Los Angeles and Rancho Palos Verde is That you can get to 80 miles an hour Really fast that really quickly And you know, Mike, you drove that same stretch of road over the weekend. You can go down one of those curvy roads and suddenly you don't even think about it. You're going 80 miles an hour, hitting the median crossing the road hitting a sign the car flipped over. Cut a path through the shrubbery on the side of the road. And Tiger Woods. In many hours of surgery, has very serious injuries to his legs, Compound fracture and at least one of them. We talk to Steven Gregory, who broke the news of the Tiger Woods car accident earlier in the show today and said that look, it was pretty gruesome from the waist down from the legs for Tiger Woods compound fracture. The bone was sticking out of one of his legs. But other than that he didn't have Any life threatening injuries. So now it's about Tiger Woods, his legs and what's next for him, which is as good as you could be. When you see the accent? He had that we're not talking about life or death we're talking about now. Hey, can he play golf again? But certainly for a while it was How is he? Can he live? Is he not what's going on with this? And it was just one of those. Stories where you want, it bore information right away. It's like I don't care I wanted I wanted I wanted because you hear the story and you immediately assume the worst. And of course you're thinking about Kobe Bryant. What happened? And Oh, Kobe and Tiger and now and it was the first hour or so of this story or first out 90 minutes or so. It was just an insane amount of what What is it? We don't know. We know it was serious and he's in the hospital. And the first reports were moderately critical condition. He was in which I don't really know that that's a thing, but that's what we were told. And it was. It was just information flying by you when it was hard to even pay attention. It was just tell me something. Tell me something. Tell me something. Yeah, He really just Carter started to flow right and we had a three man text chain going back and forth very quickly, based on whatever new information Started to come out Steve Gregory K. F I Here in Los Angeles. I joined the show earlier tonight. You know the first to start delving into deeper and giving some details, And then the speculation begins and all the heartfelt Wishes of support and sympathy, and it really just kind of escalated quickly to where it's like. All right, Let's push that away because you don't wanna call it noise because it was a lot of positive energy coming to the To the situation and a lot of love right thinking about all the different aspects as golfer and and well pitchman, Tomo every being a household name. Too, you know, looking at, you know the family man and then the gulf side of things. So, like all these different angles start flowing through and you're trying to just push that all out of the way to go. Okay, what happened? As you said, I drove that stretch on Saturday and they have a couple of spots in it where you have the runaway truck lanes. You know where If you're having break issues, right, it's a different paved differently. So it helps toe slow things down a bit of different incline, etcetera. So those air on the road and you get into these curves and bends that You know, In this case, it's visibilities not not an issue. Aziz. We've talked about it with other subjects that have come up. Certainly what we would think about the horrific tragedy of the Kobe Bryant incident a year ago at visibility playing in and if there is a fog on the highways there in that stretch, Yank it gets pretty dense and with the quick bends that you have You know, could be even more problematic. Obviously, that didn't play here today, but it is one that you've really got to, you know, tenant to as much as we may have laughed at it and driver's Ed This is one of those stretches of road that tenant to use the real thing because you go from 50 and you start going down that highway and down ramp kind of situation. All of a sudden you're at 70 75. You're not hitting the accelerator. You're just going with with what The road grade is so I could see where it escalates. And so now it becomes the Let's dial it back and figure out how this came to pass and And feel fortunate that as we watch the photos and video of the wreckage that he got into a hospital to get the first part of

Is It Addiction? Questions to Ask Yourself

"I'm your host William Moyers and today we're talking about the essentials of addiction we know that addiction affects about one in seven Americans in this country. But of course, our guest Christianity and can tell us addiction is everybody's problem. Chris. Thanks for joining us today my pleasure, William. Thank. You. We're here at the Betty Ford. Center where you are the administrator running the show here in Rancho, Mirage California how's that been for you? I'd spend an incredible honor and a wonderful experience. Obviously, we're encountering people at a very painful intersection of their lives, but it's deeply rewarding because of what recovery offers in terms of people getting their lives back who are struggling with addiction as you just said a moment ago it's everyone's problem. It's hard these days to find someone. Who doesn't know another person impacted by this disease talk more about that addiction discriminate. Absolutely, not we know the facts people from all walks of life and we see it every day. Right? It doesn't You know `economics doesn't protect financial backing doesn't protect someone from addiction it's. Affects, people irrespective of race or ethnicity or gender The, the solutions oftentimes have not always been equally offered to jewels. I think one of the wonderful legacies of the Betty Ford Center is early on the recognition of the way this disease affects women as much as it does men. and So that's a wonderful part of the legacy because it does impact. So many different people and families and children. So it doesn't discriminate at all. Unfortunately what are the signs that somebody might be struggling with a substance use disorder? Yeah. That's a great question The most basic sign is loss of control. a substance use disorder or addiction isn't simply just the misuse of a substance that leads to harm. addiction is really about compulsive use that leads to progressive brain changes. addiction is actually a chronic but treatable medical disease that impacts the brain It involves genetics the environment, a person's life experiences, and the interactions between those areas that leads to compulsive use often also involving harmful consequences That's the more technical. Definition from the American Society of Addiction Medicine but it's fundamental. Characteristic is a loss of control and part of the person, and is that true that drug is a drug is a drug and so if you've lost control over one drug lost control over all drugs I, think that's true of addiction right? The loss of control is addiction but depending on the drugs or the type of substances you're using it can have a different impact on the individual based on their genetics and based on the drug itself. If somebody's watching this right now and feeling a little bit squirrelly because they feel like you're talking about them, what would be the signs? The symptoms? The evidence that you would recommend they look at to determine if they might have a substance use problem. So squirrelly the juice. Yeah. Perhaps, Concern Yeah another great question you. First of all, you could see you could begin to ask yourself We'll take a look at the harmful consequences of us have you attempted to control or stop your US another good sign is to think about the amount of time you spend thinking about the substance or using might say preoccupation. So to what degree do I spend a Lotta time of my day either using or thinking about using or focusing my behavior on using, and that's also Another simple way to begin to think about the potential of having a an addiction or a concern here. What about other consequences? well, there's a whole variety of consequences. One of the older definitions of of addiction as I mentioned a moment ago that's been updated recently to include the concept of it being treatable, which is really important. But one of the older definitions broke it down in terms of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual manifestations of the condition of the disease, and so we can think about how it affects our body right in my experiencing harmful consequences in terms of anxiety, the inability to sleep well Other ways that it might be impacting me physiologically psychologically how is it impacting my perception, my emotions, my experience of the world psychologically socially. That's a real good clear indication socially and behaviorally as well how's it impacting my relationships and that's another key factor. So we could go on but there's lots of different ways that addiction impacts people powerfully,
