Flamin' Hot with Richard Montaez
"Though we have this gomez like behold ball and like. Put your head down to get to work. I think and you share it in the book. When the ceo said think like an owner richard back then was like okay. He asked us to like an owner. And then you started developing distinct and you got the courage to make that phone call roy. So we'll explore that later. Let's take it back a second. Who is literature. What's his heritage mexican. And i was. I was born here. My dad com from a water s. And he moved out paso from el paso. He went to new mexico and from new mexico. He went to southern california where he met my mom. And that's where it all started. But i was born in in what was called a farm. Count everybody in the area that was born. Take greater wass to california's probably about two thousand people. You know what the pretty cool about the history. There's people don't know this. The area that i was born in the ontario airport guadalete california rancho cucamonga. All that was acting the biggest wine producing area in the country. It was bigger than napa valley. That's where i was born in a one room apartment. I was gonna say my birth certificate doesn't have an address. It has a house number cost number eighteen. 'cause you know the gwozdecky. I never met him of course but know he from what i was told you know my grandfather stories of him was he was a good a good man you know. He built the housing for the latino. He built the school he built a grocery store. He built a church. He came from italy so everything was replicated of his hometown which was pretty cool You know my grandpa and my dad really grew up with a challenge. I got a little bit because we got out of there. Like eight years old or something. But you know i'd go back and visit but it was know a wonderful place to for me as a child. You know there was. There was no bathrooms inside. The one room. Bathrooms were outside. You know it was like a college or a school showers and all that and then there was no kitchens. The kitchen again were across the hallway. They were community kitchen. It was big stoves like a restaurant so every morning i had lunch or dinner with ten fifteen different families and you know i learned community because as mama grandma was cooking if you ran out of something the lady next to you would pass it on and she needed something you you pass it on. So i i saw community for san the other thing too that i wanted to say to is a. I'm not an immigrant. But because of being latino in the sixties i was treated as an

"Okay. Let's move on to a guy that's being compared by now to rashad. Bateman in that is lonsdale more. He went to the arizona cardinals in the second round. And this is a guy that a lot of people are on dynasty as well. Collier thoughts on rhonda. More from purview. Run more than other guy data you know. I like the talent. I kind of wonder what his role is going to be in arizona that they do have the passing volume there to support him to become a fantasy viable wide receiver. If he's talented as he can't is athleticism has shown. I think he can produce a to be coming up a pretty valuable fancy option. I just. I'm not really in love with them. Taking them in the first round though. Because i'm not confident that he ends up becoming a very coveted player long-term. I'm just not sure that he that it's without getting the volume that Some of these other top receivers. You're going to get. I'm not sure that his death. The targets are going to be Extremely valuable and so. He's renita rely on a lot of catches now again with the air raid being spread system. There should be a lot of underneath stuff or that. It can complement deandre hopkins. So you later in their careers and you might see these. Two guy switching. But as coming out of college rancho moore's is very limited in what it skills that is He did almost everything. From elias scrimmage whether handoffs or getting short yard passes and running after the catch which is it's good for a lot of offense is like i said he could be a nice compliment out nice Robin but to deandre hopkins. But i i definitely cannot see a batman batman Combination there so. I think that the upside is. The ceiling is a little bit low for me for wanting to spend a first round pick. I think that What you can do with a lot of these guys is if there if you're kind of not sold on them at a back in first or early second round picks you know people covet. Those rookie picks quite often. And you can sometimes get undervalued veteran that you know is going to produce next year i agree with you on wanda and it's baffling to me that these two guys have with similar with shout bateman in baltimore the guy. We just talked about a similar. Adp in dynasty rookie draft right now average draft addition. They're probably going round. Pick eight pick or so but like you call. I think that rondo more is more of a second round. Pick because of the fact that hopkins is already there and i'm gonna touch on that a little bit more and say that long-term if let's say rhonda more sticks with the cardinals. Is he ever going to be a number one receiver in target for cal for calamari. Because as long as the andrea is there and he's demanding one hundred seventy targets. There's not a lot of room. That offense to morris thrive. So that's why i'm with you on route. One del more. I think he's a talented receiver but Even before the draft i was not as high on rhonda with a lot of receivers seeing this landing spot to me makes him in less desirable of a prospect for me. So i'm not on the vonda more train either. And this is probably a guy that i will avoid. I have no problem taking him in the second round. But based on where i've been singing going i think he's not gonna fall to a second round. And if there's a toss up between vonda more rashad bateman the board that i'm gonna pick shot bateman That's what i'm going to be doing every every time. Because i just like Bateman a lot. More than i do rhonda more at this point. Yeah i do i. She liked the landing spot. You know. being tied to collar long-term is a is a positive. I think as far as you know where people are going to proceed even if he does come out and flashes rookie year. People are gonna get really excited to you. Know that that's one thing that i think that You either one of these guys are tied up the young quarterbacks that can rush around and can hit a deep ball i just wondered what his development curves because the way he was using college and if he does maybe this guy could be a terrific type because he really is at that super athlete of prospect. Tiger Woods seriously injured in car accident in Los Angeles but 'awake, responsive and recovering' after right leg surgery
"It was it was incredible. Um, look, this is the biggest story that we've had all day. Most of us spent most of the morning on early afternoon watching news coverage of the Tiger Woods accident and the update that we're getting is about as good as it could be after an accident. Like he had where he was driving likely at a high rate of speed is not known, but likely for the action that we had. That's what happened. He's on a stretch of road here and outside of Los Angeles and Rancho Palos Verde is That you can get to 80 miles an hour Really fast that really quickly And you know, Mike, you drove that same stretch of road over the weekend. You can go down one of those curvy roads and suddenly you don't even think about it. You're going 80 miles an hour, hitting the median crossing the road hitting a sign the car flipped over. Cut a path through the shrubbery on the side of the road. And Tiger Woods. In many hours of surgery, has very serious injuries to his legs, Compound fracture and at least one of them. We talk to Steven Gregory, who broke the news of the Tiger Woods car accident earlier in the show today and said that look, it was pretty gruesome from the waist down from the legs for Tiger Woods compound fracture. The bone was sticking out of one of his legs. But other than that he didn't have Any life threatening injuries. So now it's about Tiger Woods, his legs and what's next for him, which is as good as you could be. When you see the accent? He had that we're not talking about life or death we're talking about now. Hey, can he play golf again? But certainly for a while it was How is he? Can he live? Is he not what's going on with this? And it was just one of those. Stories where you want, it bore information right away. It's like I don't care I wanted I wanted I wanted because you hear the story and you immediately assume the worst. And of course you're thinking about Kobe Bryant. What happened? And Oh, Kobe and Tiger and now and it was the first hour or so of this story or first out 90 minutes or so. It was just an insane amount of what What is it? We don't know. We know it was serious and he's in the hospital. And the first reports were moderately critical condition. He was in which I don't really know that that's a thing, but that's what we were told. And it was. It was just information flying by you when it was hard to even pay attention. It was just tell me something. Tell me something. Tell me something. Yeah, He really just Carter started to flow right and we had a three man text chain going back and forth very quickly, based on whatever new information Started to come out Steve Gregory K. F I Here in Los Angeles. I joined the show earlier tonight. You know the first to start delving into deeper and giving some details, And then the speculation begins and all the heartfelt Wishes of support and sympathy, and it really just kind of escalated quickly to where it's like. All right, Let's push that away because you don't wanna call it noise because it was a lot of positive energy coming to the To the situation and a lot of love right thinking about all the different aspects as golfer and and well pitchman, Tomo every being a household name. Too, you know, looking at, you know the family man and then the gulf side of things. So, like all these different angles start flowing through and you're trying to just push that all out of the way to go. Okay, what happened? As you said, I drove that stretch on Saturday and they have a couple of spots in it where you have the runaway truck lanes. You know where If you're having break issues, right, it's a different paved differently. So it helps toe slow things down a bit of different incline, etcetera. So those air on the road and you get into these curves and bends that You know, In this case, it's visibilities not not an issue. Aziz. We've talked about it with other subjects that have come up. Certainly what we would think about the horrific tragedy of the Kobe Bryant incident a year ago at visibility playing in and if there is a fog on the highways there in that stretch, Yank it gets pretty dense and with the quick bends that you have You know, could be even more problematic. Obviously, that didn't play here today, but it is one that you've really got to, you know, tenant to as much as we may have laughed at it and driver's Ed This is one of those stretches of road that tenant to use the real thing because you go from 50 and you start going down that highway and down ramp kind of situation. All of a sudden you're at 70 75. You're not hitting the accelerator. You're just going with with what The road grade is so I could see where it escalates. And so now it becomes the Let's dial it back and figure out how this came to pass and And feel fortunate that as we watch the photos and video of the wreckage that he got into a hospital to get the first part of

Is It Addiction? Questions to Ask Yourself
"I'm your host William Moyers and today we're talking about the essentials of addiction we know that addiction affects about one in seven Americans in this country. But of course, our guest Christianity and can tell us addiction is everybody's problem. Chris. Thanks for joining us today my pleasure, William. Thank. You. We're here at the Betty Ford. Center where you are the administrator running the show here in Rancho, Mirage California how's that been for you? I'd spend an incredible honor and a wonderful experience. Obviously, we're encountering people at a very painful intersection of their lives, but it's deeply rewarding because of what recovery offers in terms of people getting their lives back who are struggling with addiction as you just said a moment ago it's everyone's problem. It's hard these days to find someone. Who doesn't know another person impacted by this disease talk more about that addiction discriminate. Absolutely, not we know the facts people from all walks of life and we see it every day. Right? It doesn't You know `economics doesn't protect financial backing doesn't protect someone from addiction it's. Affects, people irrespective of race or ethnicity or gender The, the solutions oftentimes have not always been equally offered to jewels. I think one of the wonderful legacies of the Betty Ford Center is early on the recognition of the way this disease affects women as much as it does men. and So that's a wonderful part of the legacy because it does impact. So many different people and families and children. So it doesn't discriminate at all. Unfortunately what are the signs that somebody might be struggling with a substance use disorder? Yeah. That's a great question The most basic sign is loss of control. a substance use disorder or addiction isn't simply just the misuse of a substance that leads to harm. addiction is really about compulsive use that leads to progressive brain changes. addiction is actually a chronic but treatable medical disease that impacts the brain It involves genetics the environment, a person's life experiences, and the interactions between those areas that leads to compulsive use often also involving harmful consequences That's the more technical. Definition from the American Society of Addiction Medicine but it's fundamental. Characteristic is a loss of control and part of the person, and is that true that drug is a drug is a drug and so if you've lost control over one drug lost control over all drugs I, think that's true of addiction right? The loss of control is addiction but depending on the drugs or the type of substances you're using it can have a different impact on the individual based on their genetics and based on the drug itself. If somebody's watching this right now and feeling a little bit squirrelly because they feel like you're talking about them, what would be the signs? The symptoms? The evidence that you would recommend they look at to determine if they might have a substance use problem. So squirrelly the juice. Yeah. Perhaps, Concern Yeah another great question you. First of all, you could see you could begin to ask yourself We'll take a look at the harmful consequences of us have you attempted to control or stop your US another good sign is to think about the amount of time you spend thinking about the substance or using might say preoccupation. So to what degree do I spend a Lotta time of my day either using or thinking about using or focusing my behavior on using, and that's also Another simple way to begin to think about the potential of having a an addiction or a concern here. What about other consequences? well, there's a whole variety of consequences. One of the older definitions of of addiction as I mentioned a moment ago that's been updated recently to include the concept of it being treatable, which is really important. But one of the older definitions broke it down in terms of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual manifestations of the condition of the disease, and so we can think about how it affects our body right in my experiencing harmful consequences in terms of anxiety, the inability to sleep well Other ways that it might be impacting me physiologically psychologically how is it impacting my perception, my emotions, my experience of the world psychologically socially. That's a real good clear indication socially and behaviorally as well how's it impacting my relationships and that's another key factor. So we could go on but there's lots of different ways that addiction impacts people powerfully,
California went from bending the curve to a major coronavirus surge. What happened?
"New Tonight for the fourth time in one week. Los Angeles County is breaking its own record for the number of people that are in the hospital with corona virus, which also means. California is inching closer to surpassing. New, York's record of having the most cases in the country. What went so wrong in California Sarah Gardner is out front. When you're sleeping on your belly. The staff at this California. Hospital is nearing exhaustion every minute I think about covid nineteen, a video diary from inside Eisenhower, health, Rancho Mirage nurse Catherine Davis says she's used to seeing one death a year in her unit. With seven hundred Cova patients treated here so far she's now seeing forty deaths. We would ensure that a patient did not die alone. So you know, we would take turns spending time with them and holding their hand and talking to them, doctors knew they had the beds to treat the surge, but not the staff when we heard that the next wave of relief might come in and two weeks three weeks four weeks. You know that's when things become a little bit desperate. They asked the federal government for help, and it arrived an airforce medical team of about twenty help shoulder the unending load. The stress here repeated all over California. So how did we get here? The state was the first to announce a stay at home order that was march nineteenth. This is a moment we need to make tough decisions. Seven weeks later, the governor reopened the state on. On May ain't. You have bent the curve, but that wasn't to be by early June. The seven day average for new daily coronavirus cases was more than twenty, six hundred by July, Eleventh at more than ninety, four, hundred, more than two hundred fifty percent, increase and rewarding. You are renowned epidemiologist. What went wrong? In California we opened up too soon. We didn't have the virus totally under control, experts agree. Residents and local governments got complacent. Back on the field now case in point, three suburban counties near La all lifted their mask requirements under heavy pressure from angry residents. None of this is based on science, but rather an affair is political agenda to silence, the people and Strip freedoms from hardworking Americans now. hard-working Americans. All three counties are seeing Cova D- Surge And Hospital? Beds are filling out and that's frightening 'cause. Where do we go from? There are patients telling you healthy might have gotten it. Yes, well, some of them are partners. Some of them have. Gone Out and gone to parties, no masks but Los Angeles County did and still does have strict mask, requirements, tickets, or even being issued. If you don't comply and yet, it's still the epicenter of the California surge. How much worse does it have to get in Los Angeles? Before you feel compelled to issue another stay at home order well I think we're on the brink of that. People are not following the rules or not wearing masks or not social distancing among them. California's forty and under who make up more than half of the state's new cases. Also hard hit the Latino community which makes up a third of the state's population, but more than half of Cova infections. Sometimes it's mom and dad's work experience that has brought them into contact with it, and then it goes through the whole family. Experts say fixing all this comes only one way you have to just shut down for now. I think they'd is our only way out. And that is really depressing for almost anyone everyone worrying about the economy coming back, but as a couple of people told us you have to have a healthy society to have a healthy economy and one of the big issues is testing used to take a couple of days now you can take up to a week just to get an appointment when you get your results back as a whole different problem
A Poets Path To Awakening With Norman Fischer
"Zen priest. Norman is the author of many popular books including his most recent publication. The world could be otherwise imagination and the body Safa Path in his fascinating conversation. You'll he norman share stories from his own spiritual journey from aspiring young poet living in the woods of Northern California to meditation teacher and celebrated author. Norman talks about how early encounters with death predisposed him to religious and philosophical inquiry. And how reading? The existentialist would pave the way for a fascination with sin. You'll also hear Norman discuss the topic of doubt rather than providing faith certainty. Buddhism provides a pop a set of questions in which we discover what life is and who we are. Lastly Norman talks about what it means to be a teacher of the Dhamma as well as his own relationship to himself as a teacher of Buddhism. I so much enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too. I did have the first question that came to me and it was when I was just sent yo bio and it said that you have a title Zo Kit Sue. I don't know if I'm pronouncing it correctly. That's new to me and I was just wondering what that means. And what does it represent? Well it's not a title it's just it's just my name. So so maybe you're aware that in Zan when you or dane either as a lay disciple or has a priest and a lot of people will I. Dane is a lay disciple and then later ordains a priest. That's fairly typical. Get your given a diamond name. And everybody has a person's personal name and the personal name usually has four characters. So there's and and and it's a two two character names so Zo Ketziot is to character Zo and Keto and those are the first two characters of my four character personal name and the characters translate as Elephant Cave. Zo Is an elephant. Like there's these Japanese water dispensers with like big long snouts on. I don't know if you've ever seen in those are called Zo shitty or something like that L. Elephant container so so as an elephant and catch you as a kind of a cave or grotto where people meditate so The they say that In Asia in ancient times when they were looking for caves to meditate in there would be caves where that elephants would be drawn to because the caves would have like some kind of. I don't know if this is true but somebody told me this. The cage have some kind of mineral in the walls of the cave that the elephants would like to lick on and eat for their digestion. So the elephants would go into these caves in search of this mineral and then they would over centuries. I rub their flanks against the Cave. Making the cave like really nice and smooth and pleasant and then later on meditators would go in these caves and they called him. Elephant caves for meditation so That's very unusual name. I've never there's a lot of names that are common in Japanese character names. You hear a lot of names. A lot of them are names that were given in the past that famous monks nuns. You know but this is a really unusual name. I don't know why I have this name. My teacher gave it to me and when I ask them like how come you gave you the name. He didn't seem to remember having done it. And that's because I think that he was a very busy person and he had a lot of students. I don't think he really particularly noticed me. So he just probably have random names assigned to people randomly so. I don't think there's any special reason why I have that many but it's so people yeah people often think it's title they think. Wow this is some very special title. I never heard this before but the thing is I don't like titles I I don't I don't ever like to use any titles Nobody calls me Rossier Censeo or anything like that. They just call me by my name and in fact hardly anybody calls me Zo Coetzer. They just call me by English name. I had that impression that you want to into title so then when I sold that bio and it intrigued me and I was like wow. Maybe he's I've never seen that title before. Maybe he's got the highest one I've ever seen before. And so he might be compelled to use it. No no no. It's not a title so Who was a teacher that gave you that name? Richard Baker Richard Baker. And and. How did you meet him? Well let's see. I was studying zen in the Berkeley Zen Center and but the Berkeley San Center did not have the opportunity for monastic practice. So the San Francisco Zen Center which is a much bigger organization. Had A monastery at that time just just opened a few years before call. Tuskuhara and I went there for visit and I really wanted to go and do monastic practice and so in order to do monastic practice. You had to be a student of the San Francisco Zen Center system so I started attending. Dharma talks by Richard Baker and And that's how I met him just by I. I didn't really I eventually. Of course got to know him personally and still know him personally now but in the beginning I attended his Dharma. Talks like a lot of other people and I was one of the many many Younger people who were drawn to the San Francisco Zen Center in the very early nineteen seventies. So he gave you the names. O Kit Sue and that was your deigned name is that is that right. Well I I got that name as a lay ordained disciple and then when I was dating later as a priest I retain the same name I'll k. And normally it's full syllables. Did you say yes? Yeah well Yeah the last. Usually you only go by to The last two syllables are a wrench. Oh so my second. My first name Elephant Cave and then Rancho can be translated in various ways it the character's mean something like to to to face something and to shine Saw My my route teacher from Berkeley Mel Weizman translates that second game as turning toward the light which is a really wonderful translation. So so my England in English. You could say my name is elephant cave turning toward the light. I love it. I don't know I'm fascinated by this. Fan is very elastic. The Japanese in fact I've given dominating so many many people over the years and it means a lot to people right because your teacher in my case. I don't think my teacher particularly no mayor new. You know why he was giving me that name as I said a minute ago but usually when I give names I know the people right so I give them some poetic name from the Dharma and they appreciate it right because it's like. Oh Yeah I have a new name now. This is sort of my new destiny my new sort of path in life and so it is a beautiful. It's a beautiful thing to have these Dharma names. People enjoy them and they take them seriously and the in charge them. Yes and you said when you're explaining it. You said that you grew teacher. Mel Wise Men gave you This had had a translation. What did you mean by route teachers interested in that as well? Well he's you know you can have as you know you can have a lot of A lot of teachers a lifetime. Most people will have more than one just one teacher. But there's one teacher who is closest in whom usually it's the teacher that you start with an imprint. Sue initially in Dharma and so Mel Who's still alive now. He's in his. He's ninety. He was my first teacher. And when I introduced me to the Dharma and later after my initial ordination when it was time for me to receive Dharma transmission and full ordination. He was my teacher for that process. Allow so he. He's been my my main really my main teacher and the person who's Dharma. I am following more than anybody else. And so that was at the Berkeley and center. Well well we. I studied with him at Berkeley senator about five years and then after that as I said I wanted to do. Monastic practice in the monastery for about five years and then after that. I remain with the San Francisco Zen Center for the next baby. Twenty some years and moved from the monastery to Green Gulch farm zen center where I lived for another fifteen or twenty years. You would be Abbott Co Abbot of San Francisco Zen Center eventually. Yeah Yeah
Tribal solutions and challenges
"Today. We're GONNA start off in Tacoma County in California. We Have Greg. Sarah's he is the chairman of the Federated Indians of Grayton Ranch Ria he is a tribal member of the Rancho Rio which includes descendants of the southern. Pomo and coast me walk. People are pleasure to have him here and Sarah's welcome thank you terra. Good morning and chairman just want to start off in understand more about what is your tribe is facing and where things currently stand in terms of facing cove in nineteen Well I think as with all tribes are. I thought of my first thought. Is the leader in. The leadership of this tribe is to take care of our tribal citizens How do we ensure their health? How do we continue programs at service? The elders and so forth With of course short with do less revenue At the same time we have a large casino One of the largest in California. We have fifteen hundred nearly fifteen hundred tribal citizens and at the same time we have over two thousand team members that work in the Casino Resort Casino. Close about a month ago And so of course. Revenues dried up. We've been very fortunate. I will have to say we've been able Well with spending money we've been able to take care of our citizens that's far and continue per capsule albeit somewhat reduced or You know pull back lever connector cavs ability to pay for caps. But we've been able to keep our been most of our programs going And we've been. I think very worked very hard. It's been very stressful for me to make sure that the all the team members who've been furloughed Since that time and for the indefinite future will be Will continue to receive their medical benefits. We will continue to. We have a very good plan. A the Chitral Cadillac plan whereby they pay nothing out of their paycheck so while they're furloughed. We continue to do that. We paid their salaries until many I After which we made sure that with the bump in the employment from the federal government to six hundred dollar bump that they will have somewhat close to equitable pay And so we figure with that and the insurance which will go on indefinitely. They're they're covered but it's been really really stressful About how to get monies We Hope Tara that we will get We believe we're GONNA get the employee retention credit Because we kept our employees. We have a hundred employees just in our travel office with our programs and we had to reduce furlough some of them and reduce salaries there We Governor Newsom here in. California has been very good he. We don't have to pay our compact fees. He's weighed compact piece for six months. Which of the Health? And of course we hope to apply for the Stabilization Fund for the tracks. It sure interment. Is there any talk that those funds will have to be paid back eventually the compact fees? No I don't because again The money the the casinos are closed down. And they're not generating any revenue and remember the very good question the compaq fees based on revenue and when there's no revenue that okay and I think the guy. I don't believe the governor's going to ask us to pay them back or if he does It'll be able to do away in a way that it won't break if he's been very good insensitive to our situation but for the time being of course the casinos are generating revenue and a big other question that we have right now. Those of us that are operating casinos. How do we reopen when if and when we do reopen? We're going to have to practice. The you know six feet distancing measure how do you what would you imagine a casino with Slot Machines and card tables? How do you open a large facility? Which is the one we have Where whereby? You have to have people six feet apart all of Asli. Your revenue flow is going to be greatly reduced when you do reopen so again. That is something that I will sit down and talk to the governor about when that time comes. I'm working on a model for how to do that with him. Now but again we have no idea when that limited opening will begin in. This is something in a lot of tribal leaders are thinking about 'em especially because the tribe makes the call whether it's open or not and A lot of tribes have just on their own heeded the call to Bring more awareness. And that's why a lot of them have closed down end so chairman says anything else you WANNA share about dealing with the state to either get funding or aid or assistance needed Often in the past. It's been the story That sometimes there are way too many hurdles when it comes to working with the state having a seat at the table. We've heard a lot of different things too when it comes to fema funding. Where do things stand now? That relationship with the tribe or with the state. Sorry well we were in A. We're in a very good place. We WE HAVE A. We are our particular type we have. I have a good relationship with Governor tribes here thus far have had a good relationship with governor newsom so Again one of the things as I was waiting We didn't want to furlough any of our people until I kept in touch with him until he negotiated with the feds to get that unemployment bump once he got that then for instance we could take care of our furloughed people and quit paying them salaries. We were paying the full salary until we heard that. But that bump so we waited we worked with him for that we also as I said are working with him. have worked with him to For the time being away the contact sees So So far so good I mean given the situation now regarding the opening I will. We will defer to him when it is safe and ready. I know that some smaller tribes others may want to do differently We also have as you indicated or inferred the option of not opening. But we're doing everything we can. And when we do reopen we're already looking into the various devices which To tell people have a fever coming into the casino An all that sort of thing. So we will comply with Whatever he suggests regarding avery opening my tribal I can't of COURSE SPEAK FOR OTHER TRIBES. Serio in chairman when it comes to your tribe are there any reported cases of covert nineteen? No not that I know of We have taken really strict measures to talk to. Our families are traveled families of particularly keeping the elders inside Sheltering in place a lot of things are kind of sad. I mean we were. We have larger organic garden where we were delivering vegetables and so forth to elders Our some of our staff were in. You know we've had to stop even things like that But yet our services are still in place so that if tribal elders have any health issues they are staff in the tribal office are in contact with the families and with the elders. So that if anything comes up There is an infrastructure in place to support our people in the matter of any health issues that arise

"So we'll see what their priorities for spending that battery currency this year. Yeah. And and I I have a feeling that this year may not may be another incremental update which will have things like, you know, doing the little things better. But I'm thinking by twenty twenty we'll probably see like a major overhaul of that operating system in. It'll look a lot different. It'll work a lot different. Have some big features. You know, what I love to see? And this is happening across the board when it. Comes to fitness devices like garment and Fitbit. I would love to see some women's health features that that a show actually in the health out that wouldn't be an apple watch specific thing that would be a health thing. I think it's great. I think we're finally getting a lot more variety with with with women's health issues in ways that we can track things it's not just like, you know, your monthly cycle. There's a lot of other things involved that women have to deal with and having these kinds of features that not just have you track, you know, thirty days or thirty days, but actually give you some advice on during certain weeks and certain times of that year, and you know, just eating habits exercising habits. These are all things that I'm talking don't do. You sleep. Tracking would be great too. I'm still on the fence about like, I don't think that because it in order to really get decent sleep tracking. You. To wear a device to sleep. And I don't think apple has created a hardware device that you can wear while you sleep by. There are some that exist. I think it's the motive ring that just your apple watch. And then if you accidentally hit your significant other does more damage, I mean like it's bonus. It's great great for everyone. So I think I think I will actually hold off on sleep tracking until vacant create a hardware It's great great for everyone. "There could be you know, any dozen number of people that could find that for you and take it up to the front desk. So that you can go pick it up. I I hope that's really comes out. And I look forward to seeing how they're going to do that. Because it's you almost don't need the hardware in order to just sort of like the way. The way use hand off when you want to send a picture, you can enable your phone to only share that stuff with contacts or open to anybody. So you could you could potentially with this new find my stuff thing, you could set your phone to not allow that that ping to come through from people. You don't know and that could be your way of sort of protecting yourself from just getting random Ping's from strangers. But then, you know, if you're at your friend's house when you lose your phone, or if you were at school when you lose your phone, your your friends in your family that do have it turned on for you. You could narrow it down to just them using using that to try to find your phone for you. So even though even with this idea that you could open it up to any stranger. You could also if I were to use his what Ardy exists in the world, you could also close that off to only allow it to be with your friends and family. Still a really great feature gonna great great way to do it, and you wouldn't need anything. But your phone for which I think is really great. No. I think it's I think it's awesome. It's there's just he he had a just going to list. There's just a ton of stuff there. I've done two videos on ready. I did the general stuff. And then I did the nerdy stuff. Video. And it were just go look at his articles. And there's just there's so much like sometimes you'll just drop a sentence in there. That's a whole big thing. I could talk about for an hour. Yeah. And he just keeps like finding new things in sharing them with us in almost every day. You're just so excited about. Oh. Wow. This looks cool. This is gonna be neat. They're gonna do that. Wow. Yeah. I was going to be big. Yeah. Watch US have have we heard anything? Great or exciting about coming anything to watch us. I mean, we've heard that the wash will be useful for more than it is currently with MAC OS. Like right now, it just does apple it does unlock Apple Pay. But it might start doing everything that touch ID does which would be super cool. But I haven't heard too much in terms of like got to imagine they'll be new workout. It's always like better indications. I don't think I'm not saying that like just to be cut about it. It's really important, but they're doing the watch the watch itself is a restricted device. So you can't there's only a limit to what they can do with it. But within those limits at least for now, they're doing more and better workouts, more and better communications more in better health. And what do they call it? An intelligent guardian. Whatever the hell beecher's like like, they want heart rate, monitor and g and all those kinds of stuff. So hopefully, we'll see more and more improvements along those. I think last year with watch OS four apple perfected. They apple watch. And I think now it's time for them to perfect watch OS like they don't need to work on the hardware anymore. They they did it. They finally did the the perfect thing. So now, I think definitely doing things like. Getting that batteries down as low as you possibly can without having to actually put in a bigger battery. So that Georgia can have her always onscreen. I think they could do that they've done that with IAS. They've they've they've proven that they can do things on the software side that reduced the battery usage, so that they can, you know, do other things that might take up a little bit more better usage. So I'm just spending differently. Like the first time. The got better usage down these spent it on faster app launch in the second time is spent it on better activity..

"Or are they actually working with tile? We we won't know until it's official with all of them is an API. I don't know. Yeah. I know. Yeah. That's another thing is it is it that apple is gonna make their own version of a tile like device or are. They. Gonna open it up to companies like tile to mate to add that to their to their device that that's all very interesting stuff. I can't wait to see that. I actually use a tile a use tile. If my stuff in our haven't lost anything in. That's great. But I do live one of the one of the things about tile that I love is that it's not just that you can paying the device or the tile when something goes missing. It's also that if you lose something indivisibility of anyone else, that's using that also has tile they can help you find that stuff. So it'll ping them and tell you, you know, there's a missing phone if you hear it pick it up or something like that. And so then if I let say go to the movies, I leave my phone at the movie theater and somebody at the movies also has tile, and they hear it, and they pick it up. They can get it back to me somehow or take it to the front desk, and I can go get it back. That's great. But that means that there has. Is to be somebody that uses tile. And there's not as many people that use tile as there are people who just have an iphone. So the ability to if if this were something that could be added into the into Apple's new find my stuff, the idea that you could ping a bunch of people's iphones for the. I've lost my iphone like that's a great. That's a great way. Because there's going to be way more people in the world that are sitting in the movies. And you know, I guess movie theaters about example, because nobody wants a notification going on their phone they're at the movies, but let's say a restaurant end..

"That was right. Oh, it's gonna bother me. Now, remember the water anyways? So like, then that's year high Sierra it takes a lot of the pressure off. So like, otherwise you just start sweating too much about like what's the perfect first name. But if you pick a theme, you just pick something from that theme, and then you can keep going. So with seem do you think the first I to that was at Mavericks Mavericks? Thank you. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm happy with Canadian provinces. But that doesn't take very far. So they can't really stick. With those super good question. Shirts was real clever. I would go with wars planets, but they don't have the rights to them. Stick with things that are pretty that aren't gonna get them in trouble for cover it 'infringement for sure I'm thinking, I'm thinking, it should be animals that exist in the mountains of. No because they already did that with with MAC OS. So you're bugs different types of bugs. No, you're right. That wouldn't work either. Yeah. You know? I hadn't really thought about it. This ends like a lot of fun to license do kit Kat have Iowa's Mickey IOS, the Batman. If they use Disney characters, I o s in each one of them, the first one, obviously would be Mickey because, you know, making mass would be the first, but if they could license from Disney each year, it would be a different Disney character now that would be fun. But I was still a cool sounding. Let's let Phil Schiller after famous race cars. That'd be fine with me. Yeah. Yeah. That would work. That's actually that makes the most sense. Stinger. Yeah. Using some things speedy. Yeah. That's a that's a good. So what kind of we've got? So we talked a little well, actually, we haven't talked about the the rumored features coming to us. And I know we're a little bit early on that. But we can talk about whatever we want. Just keep spoiling everything. I I think he told me how TV shows that haven't even come out yet are going to end. He's such a spoiler. So on the weekend with mentioned that NS north last weekend with the one password guys and year Emba in Luke who makes Luganda elements screens and just a lot of really smart developers with a lot of fun and Cancun to who did the keyboard for the iphone was a good time. I read his book, thanks to your recommendation. It's a good book. But yeah, I was there with I was there with getting a lot of fun and can can tell stories I was enjoying them. Nice. That's great NM where they are a lot of people in attendance for this thing. I mean, they had the hall, Phil. I don't know what their numbers were terrible number. Maybe a hundred people it was. It was good. That's great. Any all just kinda just sat around chatted about apple Steph. Yeah. Yeah. Totally. I mean, it was Larry like they were. Ken was telling the story about how the very first iphone video game was really they were trying to they were trying to pick the size of the icons because it wasn't obvious to them. How big the icons should be. There were con- before on Pomme Wes and on and on the Newton, but they wanted to figure out the ideal size. Like they were too small found it stressful because they had to hit exactly on the thing. But there are too big wasted space program to the video game where they covered the screen with different size icons, and you would try to hit them, and they would they wouldn't tell you, but they would internally record your accuracy. And then they found out that I forget what the size was forty two pixels or something was the perfect size. That was where you could fit all the full grid. But you didn't people didn't miss them or stress about it. So it was just a cute story. It's such a great way to win that again that that book by Ken kitchen too is so good for that exact reason is like the early development of IRS and the ingenious ways that they came up with how they were going..

"I would just own it. I mean, I don't know. I not at four and that means death in like half the cultures. Maybe they're not even going to worry about the I yeah, I guess now that I think about it. If they skipped thirteen there'd be such a hubbub about apple being a bunch of. Super super man that's a hard use the that apple superstitious won't use thirteen in what? I like the idea of like a west ten Mohave. And I love the Google has like razz, not raspberry pi. That'd be too cool. We're not there yet. But I loved it. They have like pie, and you know, all the different desert kit, Kat, all the different desert names. I'd love to have a name. I just call it Yukon. What's the big deal? It sounds cool. Sounds bad ass. Yeah. I I love the idea to in fact with with MAC with MAC OS. It's actually really easy to distinguish the differences between software. Yeah. Between the software systems because they give you these very easy to remember names, especially because MAC OS isn't. So I o s is like three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve MAC OS is like ten point one two point two ten point three like 'cause they're all ten just call it like fifteen to ten point fifty right anymore. Apple. But when they give you the the name, they when they name it you if it's it's so much easier for my brain to kind of like understand the separation between the two like, oh, you know, safari had these features in high Sierra had these features or sorry Sierra and high Sierra, and then MAC OS Mojave, they the you can kind of name them. And then identify the features that came out with them a lot easier than trying to remember the numbers. I don't know. I I like naming things I think it would be really fun to see apple go that we do have you heard any musings or rumors that that was coming because I know we've heard the rumor that they're changing the name of the iphone to to to just iphone twenty nineteen. So have you heard anything about Iowa's having? The internal codename for a long time. They were all ski hills. And then last year, they had that whole liberty and freedom and peace, and you know, everything was named after some I don't know some versus of desire to restore the newsroom style west wing democracies of this year. All we've heard is Yukon because a MAC version is not in the bills. You don't see it as easily. And but I don't know is that Yukon the the territory in Canada is that you con- potatoes. Like, it MAC is MAC OS. Russet. Like, I I just I love those names Big Mac OS MAC OS was wines for a long time. And then it was Apple's for a while like gala, and that kind of stuff to me is cool because it doesn't hurt anything. It's kinda it's kinda cool. I love the whole spies or codename superhero vibe. I would just like they came out of Asian announced, the IRS Yukon be all you. Yeah. If if they. No to valley if they were gonna switch over from a numbering system, and this was their very first year that they were going to do that. What name would you think would be perfect for for us? I don't think you can do what I liked so much about when they switched the names from the big cats to the California landmarks is that when you name the category. Takes the pressure off the initial one like I forget, it was the beach, right? It was was the first MAC OS, the blanking on the name. But it was the water the first MAC OS after the big cats that was them. See sierra. No, it was one that was a beach..

"All right enough. Talk about all of the things we live outside of apple. Let's talk about apple and how much we left her. What they're doing any given to so you, and I talked before the show about what we were going to talk about and one one thing you mentioned was how much I love to talk about right to repair was link. I'm not sure if you had read it this earlier in the week on I think it was thirty two almost identical stories one in California one on -tario, and they happened in the same week, which is bizarre. Right. So. It turns out that apple is is in talks with some groups of people that they're they're trying to say that it's a bad idea to allow people to repair, according to the article that we found on motherboard which will will link in the show notes that apple is is kind of suggesting that it's dangerous to allow people to repair their I phones because they they might be injured. They might get injured. Try. Battery how catastrophic failures and they're right. Yeah. If you puncture your battery, you could have, you know, burn your skin, burn your face burner stuff. So. Yeah. That is actually like a legitimate thing to be worried about and then you actually followed by the time. I started watching the Senate hearing in on -tario Canada. I had only cut the last end of it. So how much of did you see what kind of information? Did you hear about with that just for second with so interesting about this is that like apples involved in? I think it was like eighteen companies apple looks like it's got their own lobbyists. The other there's a bunch of organizations that represent like Samsung and the other companies and the all have different objections. I think apple took a part in. I phone in front of them to show. How dangerous it was and Kyle lions fix it said..

"And no this was not an April Fools joke. This was real that they're making a sonic the hedgehog live action slash CG. Like to. Yeah. And the I mean, there's so many things that seem awkward about it. Not just the fact that sonic is kind of weird. Looking people are upset about the poke him on in Polk. Amman tickets you as well because they're all furry and kind of a little bit uncanny like half animal half cartoon, and I'm not sure either really works. I think the difference between detective Pichu. And this particular version of Senate hedgehog, though, is that they gave this son at character. A couple of of. I wouldn't call them realistic looking aspects. But like he's got the sort of long legs, which makes sense for a runner. But it's it's he doesn't look like a cute character. Whereas in on it, he well, I don't know. I guess it depends on what what kind of idea or are you looking at. I don't think he looks like the original Sonic's, but I get where they were getting that vision from so it's not it's not that so much as it's that I don't think sonic translates to live action as well as Pika does believe it or not because I didn't think Pichu chew would translate to live action. But it turns out he's already is so good in that role. Yeah. Yeah. And so I think the difference is that the characters the Pokemon characters detective Pika chew are cuter. Even if they do kind of like send you to a little bit of an uncanny valley. It's not as bad as what they did with on which they're saying they're do. Weird. I know I think that was the right thing, especially because this is this is gonna be. The the knockoff copycat of detective Pichu if you're gonna come in onto the scene and say, we're doing the exact same thing. But with a different character, it better be better than the first one that pops up and if if if right out of the gate, their first teaser trailer is something upsetting to everyone. It's gonna bomb. So I think they were smart decide to change that as soon as possible even counting will actually I think Jim Carey, Jim Carrey's. Character looks pretty good. He he kind of fits that mold pretty well. So I think it really is just the sonic weird long legged thing that just long leg long, arm and human teeth. I dunno it just didn't it doesn't look quite as good. So I think they need to squeeze him down a little shorter are sonic again. Yeah. Exactly.
