"And there it's almost real money when you get to about five hundred million dollars fall. When nowadays in college football, you're you're you're finally starting to get somebody's attention. Hey, Ralph great to have you on. Oh, always a pleasure. We will talk to you very soon. Nightfall? Ralph Rousseau one of the great voices in college football from the Associated Press. You were also among the great voices. And we will talk to you when we come back. You're listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We're back to get back to your calls, and Matt is up next in Mississippi Hilla, Matt call you gave out a one bit kind of a hard time, you won't even let them defend himself or you just totally to look inside the wall. Well, gee, fair. I'm not really sure fairness comes into play. Would you like to pick up the his his side of the story? It's all yours. I'll give it a shot. I mean, I can give you the simple legend entrance. Tell you that winning is not in their DNA. But I'll go into a little bit more than that. If you will allow me to it's all yours. Look, I mean, they got always having fun. If you wanna go back, and they beat us pretty good. The last two years Bill. Let's go back the last twenty. And I mean, you obviously should know what the record is there. If you wanna go physician physician, we can do that all day long to four and has better wide receivers. They have a better defense. They have a better running back corps. Core. Now, what is Georgia have a better offense of line? Will you know, what they better because last time I checked their backup quarterbacks playing football in another state. Now, if you wanna go to quarterback, and you you know, we know you love some J Trump what was your stats last year thirty one six well what we're fleet pay Franks's thirty one in six and who who's who's got a better upside you ask any of your scouts and marry hope Matt hold on one second who's better upside between fully pay Franks, and and Jake from I would say that's pretty easy to to answer Jake from. We're not. Okay. Well, if you're gonna say upside I disagree with you. And who's got a better coach? Better coach in terms of what head coach or? Yes. Better for you better quarterback. Listen, I I think it's obvious have upset repeated that Dan Mullins arguably the best play caller in the country. So I don't need to repeat that. But. Who would I trust more running a program? Dan Mullen, Kirby, smart, I think that's a pretty good question. Well, we know who's back man just got food. But you know, I won't even go. It opened up a whole other flood if I have to tell you, I'm I'm I don't maybe I don't read enough anymore. I I'm not sure I understood what you just said there director of would that be they're director of recruiting. Not sure, but I'm not gonna go there. Because. You've already gone there. You you just got through come on. You're throwing pathetic fools out left. And right now, I'm about forty bag. Bag. You got as a gator fan. You have just accused the director of recruiting at a competing school being a bag, man. And then you want to say, well, I'm not going to go there. You already you've already gone there. Well, first of all, I'll we'll go there because he's no longer there is he I listen I saw the same door you did. But not knowing explain why left. I have no idea. It's may we're having fun. But look I had I have news for you. There's nothing having fun is not impugning someone's reputation. I don't have any idea why he left if you do then you're welcome to to spit it out. Georgia fans, especially your most famous one gets on there phones, his gums all day long. And you know, nobody challenges them, but I'll tell you what saved my number. "But they've also had campus level issue. Larry Scottish, not responsible for the fact that USC has been a dumpster fire. Right. I in just in many ways, and Larry Scott is not responsible for the fact that UCLA in football and basketball has had a hard time getting out of its own way. And if those two programs are are are are floundering along that's going to be a real problem for the Pac twelve, you know, listen, there are also issues, and he talks about all the time. You know that that are not conference related that are not Larry Scott related. They can't do anything about the time zone. They haven't issue as far as recruiting base out there being two centered on California, they could use a bigger footprint. Those aren't Larry Scott's problems. But all these things are now hitting at once, and it it does it creates a bad narrative for the league. But a lot of this could be cured Paul if they just win some more football and basketball games talking to Ralph Rousseau's, speaking of some of the dumpster fires. I'm sure you saw the story yesterday. Reggie bush. Not credible. But still he's a pretty famous name campaigning for urban Meyer. You know urban you've covered him for many many years after a year sitting on the FOX set doing college football on Saturday morning. Do you think he could be enticed to take that job assuming it opens? Yeah. I have been a visit another issue with USC, right? We're already talking about who could possibly replace clay Helton. And we have it. We're not even close to the season got. So I my I will go I will speak with my initial spot on urban when he retired. You know, not that unexpectedly what was it in December January. And that is I really don't think he's gonna come back to college football. And I think I'm in the minority on that. And what I said Ben was urban Meyer has too big ego to go to a job what he can't win an actual championship. So that eliminates almost every job in the country. Right. But USC is definitely a place where you can win a national championship. So. That's the one place where I look at it and go boy if urban wanted to be an empty nester with his wife, and and move because they have, you know, their their kids are sort of moving on and go, you know, live in sunny, California and transform that program and be a conquering hero, then that would be a place to do it. I do think if something were to happen soon this year, there are some other issue. You know, what what what partially ended urban Meyer's time in Ohio State, the allegations against Smith and his handling of them will US's got issues beyond their football program going on obviously in that university. You know, and we talk about the emissions scandal. There's also scandal with you know, that has sort of harkened back to Larry Nassar scandal at Michigan state so urban somewhat problematic pass, then you can be a judge of how problematic that is might be an issue for USC. If it comes time to hire a new coach. So there's another ops. To urban ending up at USC. So again, I've always been skeptical that everyone's going to get back in just because I just don't think he's gonna go. Do what these Spurrier didn't go, South Carolina. Right. I can't see urban Meyer doing that. And if you and if US's not the right fit will then where. Yeah. I'm trying to as you talk about that. I remember the president got dumped out there because have a. The some really serious allegations on his watch. That's a fair point. I I would agree with you, by the way, we're we're we're now in may we're finally getting within range of the college football season. And all the prognosticators seem to be saying the same thing Ralph, you know, the sport as well as anyone. Is there a school that can enter the Alabama Clemson party and break this up? Yeah. I suspect we might be marching toward coins in Alabama again in some way in the playoff..

"Let's bring in Ralph Rousseau Ralph. We've had quite a conversation about this new proclamation from the pack twelve as we say Hello to you. Give us the backstory on this. And and we know they're not going to change. But we're does it really matter what they do out there. Well, I mean, it matters to them. They were becoming less and less relevant on a national stage. Least lately now that could be cyclical, and and we'll see what happens in the upcoming years. So will you say does it matter? I I don't know how much you would should matter to the big ten in the SEC. And folks of major college football teams around the country back twelve is sort of isolated itself a little bit by not being as good in the last couple of years now again, these things are cyclical looks like off Oregon could have a pretty darn good team. And we'll see what happens at Stanford, and there's all kinds of issues going on with the LA schools. But yeah, I mean, ultimately, they can complain all they want about. Well, we played nine games, and we don't really often schedule ex US schools, and because we play nine conference games. And it's well game in a twelve team conference. We are really sort of the numbers are stacked against us. We're going to accumulate more losses are good teams are gonna play each other are going to be more likely to play each other in crossover games. You know, that's all true. But what you do to fix that. Is you have one of your really good teams? Be better pay. No, you win more non conference games. You win more bowl games to sort of set the stage for your reputation and things along those lines. So yes, they have some issues as far as equity and and conference scheduling things along those lines. But they're bigger issue is their teams have been good enough. What's till the camera back for a second and just talking about the league itself? Because I mean, it's hard to find an article on the Pac twelve that isn't negative. And I know this maybe picking on them, but it starts with Larry Scott the Commissioner at you know, a lot of investigative work out in Oregon that has been done on him in the league. And and they're, you know, forget the scandal. That's going on with Shawn Miller. I mean that's been going on for a while. But it it just doesn't seem like this league can really catch a break and on top of that you had the UCLA basketball. Coaching search which was both comical and tragic all at the same time. So where did the Pac twelve overall before we even get back to football? Go wrong. Yeah. I think there are two buckets here. And there's some stuff that definitely lands on Larry Scott desk. Listen, it goes back to the the TV deal, which was three what was cutting off three billion dollar deal way back in two thousand twelve and it was revolutionary, and it was a Norma stuff both for conference that was a power five conference being run like a mom and pop shop. It was transformative. They've created a yellow network, but you know, stemming back from that they made some mistakes as far as not partnering with another network or having a partner in their in their conference network to help monetize it. So that's held them back a little bit. And what was one day revolutionary TV deal has sort of been passed. And now the gap between the Pac twelve and the other power five leagues as far as revenue was growing, and you can throw some of that on Larry Scott desk, then you could throw some of the leadership issues he sort of cut out. The more of a, you know, Commissioner to president model, and that chased a lot of a dis, and he's made missteps as far as just overall leadership, and and sort of perception things, you know, the way he goes about as far as his own salary and moving the league and sort of opulent spending. So a lot of that is fair criticism of Larry Scott net land on his death..

"He needs them think about just walking into the will wait which way shin right now is made. I mean, I know I know I listened to him on earlier. And I know it sounds like it's all resolved and stuff. But there's part of me that sitting there going how much of that might be contractual. And just kind of you know, they can't just let him go right now. I to me it just seems like you're leaving Kush situation for one that that has its fair share of of issues and instability and uncertainty. But again, I mean, this is something I, you know, Scott, I know Scott, it's not an oh, he's not going to make no night. No, no. He's gonna limit. It wasn't Billy. I I can't. Thank you enough. I know you're in the middle of a breaking story. But thank you very much for being with us can tell you this day trade coaches a lot between shavers and Woodward and they almost did with a random. I know that Texas they will not be idling Joa liba. No. We have that. I'm sure buzz Williams and JIMBO Fisher will probably skip the farewell party for Scott Woodward who brought both of them in. Hey, thanks, Billy. We'll talk to you tomorrow. Paul. Thank you. I mean talking about a bombshell on a day of multiple bomb show. You could see a leva getting fired. But before that the ink was even dry on the statement announcing that he's moving on to this assistant to the president's role. Whatever the victim, Billy Lucci just broke on this show. A story that said Scott Woodward is definitely going back. According to his sources makes us even more stupefied. You're listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Ralph Rousseau joining us the college football writer for the Associated Press Ralph it has been a busy day down here with Joa livas removal, and the likelihood of Scott Woodward going from AM to LSU as we say Hello to you. Good afternoon in your reaction to all of this. Yeah. Busy day in LSU. You know, the Aleve thing has sort of been percolating what for like three or four years now. I mean, I essentially starting with him trying to oust less miles at the end of I guess it was the two thousand sixteen season. I'm getting a little blurry here. And it wasn't that LSU fans necessarily. We're sad about trying to get rid of let's miles. It just that they did it in such an awkward and disrespectful way and ever since. Then it hasn't been a very good look for Aleve. I think that he has not been a very popular guy at LSU. And then the we will the will Wade thing happened this year again the fans come down on a lever. So that wasn't necessarily shocking, and nor is it shocking. That Scott would would would be the replacement because he is a Baton Rouge guy with ties to the school. The fact that it happened. So quickly clearly says that you know, maybe a hat to LSU that it had all of us in a row here and wasn't just going to, you know, No, not. not the nicest thing to do to Joe alita to negotiate with his replacement before he even out the door. Nonetheless. I think it inefficient day for LSU if they can get this all tied other way, or less less miles on line. One thing if the terrible thing to do he agrees with you. It by the way. Scott Woodward has such a deep ties that community not only did he work as Mark emerets right hand man, when he was the chancellor at LSU, but he was also in the political consulting business air for a number of years. So it might lotta people would say why does anyone want to get into that morass?.

"And I say that because at this time of the year, we're always talking about targeting and you talk about the concussion lawsuits. So I think for college football to a certain degree. We're going to spin around and we're going to spend some time talking about how those rule changes could come about. I know, you know, player coaches had had said, listen, we we want to have a two tiered system where some players are not ejected. I don't see that happening. I think they're there. There at the Commissioner level at the administrative level of college sports. They're still not comfortable with that. I think there might be some things that they can tweak in the replay system to try to, you know, have a few less players injected. But really, it is that compensation case when you talk about all of college sports, I think it's the compensation case that, you know, should get a ruling in February that could have some long-range ramifications, though, am no matter what happens out of that case. I think you'll see some appeals, and it could be a while before anything truly happens. There's a result from the case that impacts, you know, the way schools have to operate, and the other thing is, of course, the the ones that we're still working our way through the college basketball scandal trials, and the odd thing about that is you're likely to have another NCWA men's basketball tournament March madness that sort of held under the cloud because I don't think the NCW will really be able to Dc into infractions cases that could. Out of that until you know, probably next, you know, this summer or even into next year UCLA move very quickly. Of course, Ralph great to have you on. Thank you very much. "Do you want to ahead or not you want to maga- hat? We already got to. For your birthday glower to listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. And there is some very serious news to pass along to you. We're just getting bits and pieces of this information to our newsroom right now. Breaking news. According to informed sources Jim from Tuscaloosa. Has resigned. From the finebaum show. I do not have any details. I'm going to rely on our team of sources here. But according to Dany Bramlett in John Hayes in the booth this occurred apparently in the aftermath of his Taytay with. I man in squirrel, gentlemen, Phyllis. Po I actually can report directly from the front lines. I spoke with Jim a moment ago while you were handling the other news great job in that segment. Jim would like to do the show he enjoys during the show. He's good at it. But unfortunately, you've been catering to the liars too, many times the haters and to the interrupters and it's making physically ill, and he can't do anymore. He asked me to tell John to tell you. But I just felt that tell the viewers straight straight from. Yeah. That we were on the same page here. So I realize this is a news story that that's just breaking a one wouldn't you detail wurley for sure we are new organization. We're not to some crazy talk show. But John you, you know, Jim, very well. What what do you think was the quote, unquote, tipping point? Well, I think you allow slander as behavior from people like I'm and squirrel talking about a birth date that we can or can't confirm. We don't know that. And I think that ultimately push. Him over you think the birthday next February next February fifth next Tuesday, which they are going to proclaim. His whatever birthday was the was the straw. That's right now, you'll tend to get emotional on the birthdays, I'm just going to say that without any value, judgments, Jim said his birthday is in may wouldn't tell us when but sometime in may may have thirty one days is that correct believe so. Confirm that as well. I'm pretty sure it does. I was thinking maybe Jim was born on February twenty-ninth. There's something some situation where we can now confirm mate has thirty one days for Jim was born somewhere between may first and may thirty first according to Jim, and when we do know Paul is there is reaction both on Twitter social media, Instagram Facebook as well as our phone lines to this now breaking news interested to hear what the public thinks. Okay. We will try to effort this and make it easy for you to react. But again, recapping this hour's top story Jim from Tuscaloosa, arguably, the most famous caller in finebaum show history. Once appearing on page, fifty four of the New York Times bestselling book described by some author as the best caller on the finebaum show called twice during our number one. Apparently did not like this is speculation. Now, we have not independently confirmed this. But apparently did not like the fact that squirrel said his birthday was Nick. Week next Tuesday. And I have a feeling squirrel was going to reveal the age of Jim which he hasn't a pass at some. It's something over seventy Jim disputes. That has no nowhere close to being true. Jim said his birthday is in. May. He did not tell us which date between may one and may thirty first that was so if we have any other breaking news, we here at the show will pass that along. You're listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. I to talk about change in college football. "Glad you're here. And we'll continue with more your calls more guests with that's really interesting. So far, Stu Mandel and Ralph Rousseau for starters. And look forward to talking to Dan dockage a little bit later on about Tennessee's amazing run as well. As what about Kentucky are they now squarely in the conversation for run at a a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Let's get some more phone calls here at eight five five two four two seven five two four to seven to eight five and Greg is up next. Hey, Greg, Nicole, thanks for taking my call. Thank you. The the route gristle interview was pretty interesting and discussing the options for fixing the overtime games. But he brought up something that that reminded me about an article ESPN did think it was last week, and it was discussing how. The number of insurance companies who are insuring football at all levels has dropped down to one or two companies. Did you read that article? I did that was fascinating. Yeah. Because you know, we we always think about you know, sports is being irreplaceable and everlasting, and you know, if you would've said even ten or fifteen years ago that this could be a problem people would have laughed out of the room. And I think it's something that needs to be looked at carefully. And hopefully, the powers that be at each level. Our trying to come up with some alternatives in the event that this does happen because although it's unlikely at this moment, it's still a possibility. And if you lose the ability to ensure these people than these sports are going to go away. Yeah. I think what you're seeing here. You're seeing a lot of proactive steps Tara. Geting is another big thing. He alluded to when I was in California. I walk past a room and a number of people including Commissioner Sankey, and Steve Schell were in there in a very long conversation about targeting that that goes in line with the overtime, which I think goes direct, not directly but indirectly in line with what you're talking about insurance concussions. It's a it's a new it's a new world that we're living in. And if you're not careful, we'll have a next world at all, you're right. Because they're you know, they're still a lot. We don't know about the correlation and causation between football and head injuries. But the bottom line is down the road. Some of these people are having issues and now it's been twenty years in the navy and one of the most common problems amongst guys that served in the navy is their exposure to us Festus. And when I was on a submarine. The you would think that water would be the most threatening thing. Because we're underwater, but it's fire and fire in the lagging material that they use covers the bulkheads where you're living. It's it was made of as best as back in those days. And when it caught on fire it turned pitch black. So you couldn't even see the fire in front of you. If you had to combat it because it was smoke the smoke in in the late eighties. USS bone was a diesel submarine that Colin fire and four crewmen lost their lives because of the smoking elation, and it lead to some changes in the way that they do the interiors of these submarines, and so hopefully, they will take some practice steps. One of the things that you said the other day about fixing football. If they move these important games up instead of having this whole month off, I think would be one of the easiest things to do even before you get to talking about expansion and having a whole month off just kind of. Kills the joy for everything sort of building a crescendo. And maybe having these games a little, you know, two weeks out instead of a month out. Even Greg with the Super Bowl, and I'm not trying to diminish the importance of the Super Bowl. It's a singular biggest event of the year on television. But I I mean that week off and I'm sitting here watching all the analysis, and I'm going man with this game ever get here. I understand why they don't play the week after there is a specific reason for that. There's not a lot of time. But but but even even some of the momentum of the last two games has been diminished in in my estimation. Thanks for the call..

And Roger Goodell spoke about it today. But Steve Shaw who is the SEC head of efficient also heads the national organization has been looking into a way to avoid what happened in the LSU M game. Ralph Rousseau writing about today. Two point shootout since he w looks to limit football games. Ralph everyone had a good time watching that an LSU game. But it looks like maybe it's sparking some conversation. Good afternoon in tell us what you know. Yeah. Hey, paul. You know, I think the main thing is nobody really wants to blow up the college overtime rules. I think everybody within the game understands that they're really exciting. But I think watching LSU and am play seven overtimes as fun is. That was I think it caught a lot of people within college football going. You know, these teams just played two hundred and ten plays of SEC football. I is that fair to the players. These games are very very rare seven is is an overtime record. It's only happened. They think four or five other times, very rarely do these overtime games. Go past two possessions. I think last year there were five games that went more than to the average over the last four years. I think is a little around six games that go more than two overtime possessions. So it's not like this is a plague on college football. But again, it sort of as fun as it is to watch. Are we asking too much of these players to play these marathon games? So with that in mind is there any way that they can tinker with the overtime to make it less likely that you will see these these marathon overtime games. So what are we talking about it because I know there they've had conversations. And there are ways are there. Not. Yeah. I mean, you know, I think you have the drastic step of of something like the two point conversion shoot out the idea that once you play to full possessions at that point. We're just gonna lineup each team for two point conversion one play. They either converted than the other team gets his chance, and you either, you know, you either outscore the team where the first team to get a stop in a score win essentially there's things in line with maybe eliminating field goals in overtime, which also plays into a little bit of a strategy thing. Because right now, if you get the if you if you play offense second, you sort of have an advantage. I think some of the numbers were almost surprising about fifty six percent of the team's win when they play offense. Second. Those are a little more drastic. What is more likely to happen is something as simple as right now. After the first two overtimes the teams have to go for two after a touchdown. Maybe make that from the start. Overtime on. You can't kick. No more kicking extra points. You have to go right to the two point conversions. And that makes it a little less likely to be have again these marathon games. Maybe you start the teams a few few yards back instead of at the twenty five. Maybe you go back to the thirty five or the forty five to eliminate some field goals. I think what will most likely happen is not the dramatic the more dramatic changes that essentially cap the games at two wartimes. And by the way, we're definitely not having ties. But I think they'll probably try moving the ball back going to immediately to two point conversions and see how that works again. You know, some in some ways, it almost seems like a a solution in search of a problem because I see people on Twitter saying, hey, these were great. Why would you wanna stop these games? But I do get the point of how much football is too much for unpaid college kids. Ralph in terms of the numbers. What what's the average how how long do these things?.

And I think that's what the show is supposed to be. Unfortunately, Jim, even though he talks about the bible, and even though he talks about certain things where we should be forgiving and. And I turned to politics on your show. Does it say in the bible because we love and forgive each other. It does say that. Yes. Well, I'm gonna come. Hey, I I'm not considering myself, a theology expert or. Or I I have friends who are ministers. But, but I I don't know anything. I just try to live my life as well as I can. But I do not remember ever seeing anything in the bible, Matt or anywhere else in in the Koran or the whatever relation nineteen the tour that I never remember seeing anything in the bible where you are encouraged to say about your fellow man that that he or she is spiritually evil. It was not in L as she was in co- station tonight about that we're going to win tonight. I don't think. So I think LSU's really good now in Greece. Yeah. We're playing that game. But you guys are time by schedules. Get her day Paul if you had to split Ainun schedule without Bama schedule in Alabama. I play Clinton early who'd win game, Paul. So you're saying Alabama at I am versus I know one thing if you had to flip Alabama schedules Ainun schedule and dam pike Clemson early who win that game. I think Alabama would be Clemson early. Clemson is going to be a disadvantage early in the season. They're going to be really young on defense. Again. That's not saying nice damn point. Am scheduled in. I would take Clemson in in September. I know that sounds crazy. But I think Alabama will be a little more experience and Clemson at that point in the year up against the break. We have plenty to do on our program. Couple of great guests coming up in more of your phone calls. It is Wednesday. And Ralph Rousseau is next to listening to Paul finebaum show podcast. "Great to have you on board here. And we hope you're warm. We don't think you probably are. It's one of the coldest days in modern history. Especially in the great midwest all throughout the Great Lakes and the mid mid Atlantic east coast pretty much wherever you are unless you're watching us from elsewhere in another country, you're probably not very warm, but speaking of hot how 'bout Tennessee basketball team went into Colombia last night. And made a statement we are the number one team in the country. And we don't care what anyone else thinks it was another double trouble, performance, Scofield Williams. They not been down from everywhere in Carolina simply had no answer in a twenty two point loss. Fifteenth straight for Tennessee that matches a Mark set in nineteen seventeen missed. That one. Josh Jacobs played for Alabama three weeks in two days ago. And in an interview today said the tide was not focused. They lacked focus now have you ever heard that before a Nick Sabin team in an important game? Did not have focus more on that to come. The vortex Chicago grinds to a halt the polar vortex has arrived another day of it. It will finally begin to break. But we're talking about pretty serious temperatures in Columbia MO which is cold on a hot summer night, six below. Lexington. Cold, always six degrees. And we were in Fayetteville Arkansas this year on the first weekend in November. It was seventeen so sixteen doesn't do much to scare me anyway. But it's nice and warm here inside this building, which is currently undergoing construction. I would say guys, it's maybe what thirty five or forty. Not unless you're wearing a hard hat. Welcome to the program. We will take your phone calls. We have a number of guests that will join us shortly including Louis Riddick from Atlanta where it's cold but warming up with the Super Bowl on Sunday. Ralph Rousseau on some of the new proposals in college football, Stewart Mandel has come up with a list of best jobs in the game. Tony bar NAR. Always a main stay here. And Dan dockage getting us ready for the night in college basketball. As we like to say, but I your phone calls. Eight five five to four to seven to eight five look forward to hearing from all of you. And let us begin in Atlanta. We'll how are you get after name? They will good afternoon youth. I wanted to talk just a second about something. I've not heard about much when Rick Barnes was fired. It catches several years ago. They got a shot, the smart, and basically, you know, he was supposed to be the best. You sit sliced bread in Lawrence was supposedly kind of sent out to pasture, Tennessee.
