Glendale California just outside Los Angeles Los Angeles is very very different But I can't complain too much. My heart goes out to these communities. That are really getting Turned upside down. So that's that's that's what I'm thinking about. I mean I feel like you probably have more free time than usual to sort of sit play. Are you able to like? Are you finding that the inspiration is coming as you're at home? Are you finding the time to play? I am I was supposed to be on tour An dog are cancelled very quickly. Because half of our touring party was coming from international airports. And you know the federal government shutdown really quickly cancelled really really quickly. Yeah I mean you you are doing some of those like I think. A lot of artists have been doing a have had similar experiences. I know spring is a big time for touring and a lot of people have had their cancelled and then it's like boom in live streaming and a lot of it is you know. Turn on your camera sit there and play guitar. Your livestream that you've done. It was a little bit more elaborate hen. There were there were videos. There were multiple cameras. I was wondering how you were bringing the experience of your show to people when you can't be there in person in how you're thinking about doing that sort of thing. Yeah I wish I could say that I designed it myself in But I did not I. A friend of mine label came in. Set up some cameras and They did a great job. I if the weird thing is I never saw momentum because we're keeping the quarantine rules you know. pretty You know in Los Angeles Toronto Right now but it's the same kind of gang at six feet and stuff so They came up and set up some stuff. It was fun. A collaboration with a with an art director in a in that way so. I learned the ropes on. Set up a projector and DIY says diy filming. It was a fun Yeah I feel like one of these small silver linings of all of this at least will be that people end up with some tech skills. They never work. I'm speaking to 'em word on roll cafe. "You're listening to World Cafe. My name is Raine address today. You're headed to the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia Richmond for our sense of place series. The World Cafe team visited Richmond a few months ago to explore the music scene there and found a lot of really exciting stuff. Coming out of a studio called space bomb. Space Bomb is not justice studio. It's a creative hub in Richmond. There are a label they do publishing management. They do it all. I met up there with a fast rising. Richmond band called the sleep walkers. Their sophomore album ages is out on space bomb records and I talked to ban members and brothers Austin and Michael York about that album and about how Richmond. Virginia's music scene has evolved. And what makes it so special but first you get to hear this song from ages recorded live at space bump studios for World Cafe. This is the sleep walkers with wake up Off Short we can scum cute heart. Wake up from sleep. Walkers latest album ages unroll cafe. I'm Raina DERAs in Richmond. Virginia for World Cafe Sense of place and I'm with sleep walkers right now the two brothers from sleep walkers. Could you introduce yourselves Austin and I play bass in singles Michael in I play guitar and seeing now usually I don't ask about ban names but yours has a real story behind it from when you were kids why you called sleep walkers did you actually sleep walk. I did yeah. What movie were you sleep walking in? Oh my gosh. Maybe like Cincinnati since ability. Something like that. Maybe pride prejudice or something you sitting in the front row and like during the movie he starts stood up at the movie. Walking around cousin. Had it slapped me in the face to wake me up out of this nightmare which had scary for you and for everybody else there. It stopped when you know about fifteen or sixteen. So if you can't tell you're listening. They are brothers. The York brothers are a part of sleep. Walkers new called ages right now but I wanna go back for a minute to your debut album shade. That debut came together. Pretty quick. How did it happen? Essentially I mean of course. We were playing Together and we were living in place right outside the city of Fremont road. It was really kind of a fun project. You were just going to do some stuff. And then we met Alex Our engineer. Who basically just recorded some demos stuff and then we played a show and then we booked our album released before we started recording So we had. I don't know it was a month to record and prince CDs that everything. Why would you do that kind of like a push to make us? WanNa make a record Yeah it was. Weird thing worked. We put a record out in a month so it's pretty fun. I'm talking to sleep. Walkers unrolled cafe. Its sense of place Richmond. Virginia I'm Raina Durris will go into your new album in a minute. But you said you were listening to a bunch of different records when he recorded agreement shade. Yeah we're GonNa hear a song called images from that album. What were you listening to when you came up with this? One anything particular. Peter Gabriel Ritchie. Yeah all right. Let's take a listen from greenwood shade. Sleep walkers live unrolled cafe. This is images do your don. Yeah asking tab on Much love I'm Raina Juris. You just heard images from the sleep walkers. I'm talking with Michael and Austin. Your of sleep walkers in Richmond Virginia at Space Baum Studios for world cafes sense of place your scientists space bomb records in Richmond. Virginia where we were in the studios right. Now they're known for doing kind of the the tip to tail thing here like they record. They produce they have the label. They manage Richmond Institution what makes Richmond Virginia? Such an attractive place to be an artist. I think a big part of it. Is You know the diversity but especially since we're involved with baseball they've they've created this platform for a lot of people You know like this conduit that brought a lot of people together out. See the diversity. I think it's also because it's been overlooked in it to a degree. I mean back in the day you know was kind of a hub for music and then you know the original like Nashville and then it got up but it's beautiful. The architectures really cool. I think it's becoming like this. You know people from Trans like coming from like Winston Salem or something treat it like New York like are we gonNA get Richmond. It's now become this cool hub. You know for music and for art even making music for a while. Have you felt a change in the last few years? Yeah I mean. There's there's definitely it's definitely shifted over the years In a good way I think With more diverse artists We advance before and it was somewhat of a predominantly a rock and roll scene. You know and like metals a lot of metal but now we've got some of the best jazz musicians in my opinion no ten years ago or whatever it was like you know the metal scene versus the rock scene or and now. I feel like they're shows that it'll be like it'll be a metal band in a pop band and hip hop group in to some degree. I think it's it's a good mix of just everybody fighting against each other to like. Hey this is. This is a metal city. This is the rock city or you know debt might be the seismic change where it's like there. There's just less competition between all these musicians. We're all working together and creating wave that's happening you know. You're listening to sense of place on world cafe in Richmond. Virginia I'm Reiniger as with Michael and Austin York of sleep walkers I do want to talk about how you right because there's an interesting line that I read from. I can't remember exactly who said it but that you require kind of a sensory deprivation to write in a certain sort of way Austin. You're laughing at that curious. I mean what that means at hand. What sense do you need to deprive yourself? And how do you do it? I think normal everyday work. You know for me I'm sure you're the same way it's like happen. The shower you take up some garbage and that keeps that followed. Kind of sidetracked. So a lot of boise notes. Yeah a lot of buoys nodes I mean. How do you go about writing? I mean it's different every time man. Sometimes it'll be sitting down at somebody else's piano even if you have a piano at home and just doesn't do the same thing you know. And then you know recorded on a voice vote or garage band or something you know wherever you are. I mean I recorded a ages in the ban. Yes sitting outside of a starbucks civil you. Just say you to sit in the van with your phone. Yeah do you. Do you think we could hear some still on there? I got it on my phone. Okay that's ages on.
