"Them out. Jesus here on the ground. So i'm just going to grab that hamas has made it rain topic. Yeah that one that was sitting there. Oh here this is another one of mine. I'm gearing this one more towards kahlo. oh shit the hobbit. Are you assigning this to me. Yes i am signing this to you so in the very first lord of the rings film the excellent in home says a line he. He tells gandalf that he feels like butter scraped over too much bread. And that is the analogy that i will use for the entire Hobbit film trilogy. This is a novel that is less than three hundred and fifty pages folks and they decided to stretch it out into three films that are equally as long as the novel. That is over a thousand pages. And what you get is a whole bunch of filler and a whole bunch of bullshit. That never happened like the fact that they actually asked eric gordon. His name is Vigo mortenson can think of him off time ahead at any point in time amazing. They actually asked viggo mortensen. If he wanted to come and play airborne in the hobbit poll mortenson was like. I mean i love you guys but not in the aclu goulash. Israel's not in their not like in it No actually i don't think he is. Passively mentioned he is not like a main. He's not like there with the chick. I think the chick remember her name. The elven the character evangeline lilly plays does not exist. At all any token lower anywhere exactly fabricated her for the movie. Yep and so what you also got here is. When i heard that manitoba was gonna be playing as og which by the way has like a minor character. He's like a nuisance in the book. He is not like the like this overarching villain or whatever and so. When i heard that mandate was going to be playing him. After his incredible ronald sparks. He is going to be awesome. East eros spoke but he was also get stroke district on arrow. The the best we've gotten on screen does far but that could be a whole nother being said we. We got these three bloated filler stuffed movies and they had the nerve to make extended cuts of them. But i have not forced myself to suffer through. Yeah like non like I i enjoyed especially the first one. The unexpected venture i felt was real. I felt it was good news. An art kids. Maybe yeah because that was the whole nature behind the hobbit. Anyway it was. It was supposed to be more whimsical for more a younger audience And lord of the rings being you know what it is. But i guess me again the dm fantasy side of me is like i enjoying seeing these characters. Come to life which is great but i do agree with you. I watched the first two all the way through. And then i tried to watch the very last one. And i'm i could barely make it through the first fifteen minutes and i just i was like. Why am i so bored of this movie. Why the lessons atrociously bad and the main reason that none of those movies even come close to living up to any of the rings..

viggo mortensen eric gordon Vigo mortenson Hobbit mortenson three films less than three hundred and fi Jesus over a thousand pages first two first fifteen minutes kahlo first one first evangeline lilly three bloated filler stuffed m lord of the rings gandalf one East eros

"Twenty nine points certainly wasn't good enough as the Sixers have the worst defensive efficiency in a game over the last twenty seasons red brown I mean I thought that our defense was was was poor you know when you create three turnovers for a game it's just not a reflection of who we are I think with a third of the fourth best defensive team in the NBA and we weren't even close to that tonight searchers within thirty one point loss marking their fourth losing streak of three games or more this season I had just one all of last season for general like ESPN radio searchers what the loss now thirty one and twenty said what a football since thirty one to twenty was the score of Sunday's Superbowl fifty four seven years ago Patrick my holds wondered publicly on Twitter how amazing it must feel to be the guy who says I'm going to Disney world Sunday of course he said after earning the Superbowl MVP Monday Adam silver fastpass news at the Magic Kingdom it's a really really is it adds also fell and I could even imagine this when I said that so we now do so be able to be a civil champion at Disney world it's one of the best on the minds our lives seven years guys they were like seventeen years old just a kid first question how much sleep did you get last night any I got a little power nap and I'll just say that celebrated with the other guys in the early press conference in at Disney world but it's been a it's been a lot of fun I'm enjoying it you probably know the numbers that many of us but you've had five double digit comebacks just this season Patrick how do you just flip that switch and get it done yeah I think it's a it's a credit to teammates in the guys I'm around me they never give up they they find so the very the very end of when it says zero zero zero on the clock and I we just compete and I think country instills that in us and the beginning of the I'm training camp NO two days and now we have that mindset going throughout the whole season but last night was different because one of those four previous double digit comebacks came in late in the game of the dead last night and course at the Superbowl your entire offense struggled but specifically for you Patrick why do you think you struggle so much those first three plus quarters yeah I mean all of it obviously I was in plans the best of my ability and and doing the things I usually deal with about that same time that is a great needs and so when the defense is I faced and and and my entire career and so those guys were were making plays and then the whole game and we just we just found a way to make some at the end of the land yeah I think everybody agrees the turning point was down twenty ten midway through the fourth quarter at that thirty fifteen you launch the ball a tie retail any rain topics that you call it washed two three judge walked me little he said you put this thing err on on but I hear you call that play Patrick is that true and why why then well whatever they're doing revealing the the the cats before that that is the meaning completion I'm so country we needed it I why I suppose it was go to display we had ran one that's very similar in the First Avenue and covered it well but how they cover it we had this in that kind of went off of it he went along with the safety and so we we we we we call the plate office line blocked a long time a long long time giving them time to get the ball out there and now it's hard to make the flight and when he made that plan the other and what went through your mind yeah one second please I know we're gonna get a role and and we hadn't gotten to that two minute mode got down there got its first touchdown and then I got the ball back to the defense of the right now no one on their scored again I last thing one of the things people love about you Patrick is is easy go lucky attitude you always seem happy and you're so humble now you're at the top of the world when you think back on my home the little kid with a dream setting that tweet about Disney world what goes through your mind today yeah I mean it it's it's crazy and honestly as I. something back when I was I was in high school playing quarterback first year starting to now it's in a lot of growth and I'm just glad I got to do it here with all the guys I'm around me to hold the cheese during the Superbowl victory coach Andy Reid of course picking up his first ring in over twenty years as a coach and he's hoping for more realistic the guy's a PDI exceptionally realistic I mean you can bowl I'm not saying that they're going to supplant everybody at the top it'll lead to eight years I'm not going to like people would even say in basketball was more possible all the warriors can win six the next shot up they're not cause injuries happen more often in football than even do any sports other sports yes so I mean if you I know this always starts with relative help because of the relative health for Patrick my home to some of those burgers and Kansas city seems to know how to draft a to fill in spots in the keep a personality I think yes I think that there's any chance of the favorite odds on to start the season I'm just gonna start with Andy Reid because everybody's happy for him because he was going to go into the hall of fame and now there's no asterisk none whatsoever I'm struck by how much his players like him I loved in Philadelphia as well I'm struck by how much other cultures like I'm I'm struck by players leave his team who still love him is this realistic not necessarily to me because you won't hear because football is a sport we'd take Tom Brady on this makes all right take him out and ask yourself how many guys get back all right as well just in one shoot threes has been one big rock this burgers three Russell Wilson the too I'm not sure any other active quarterback has been to more than one and a lot of guys we don't know any so I'm not sure and go back I like the Seattle analogy they went back and if they have just done this in awhile so we would have one fewer I know it's only it's hard not seen anything about as easy understand Kansas city they still seen in ascension to me but to this team didn't take off until the first of November I think they're going to go this way relative health presumed for little ones that all by the fact that early in the game Andy Reid would only gone on fourth down ten times all season went twice on fourth and one fourth in a yard had no nothing if it if it looks okay for orders only twenty five in the first quarter was you know wasn't there but I was surprised he didn't take the second I was I was she's was truly.

"Are you guys. It's Nice knows always. He's hardest in the fall. Somehow in January I feel if it's like minus eight thousand. I've gotten used to the fall when it first is cooler. It's just it's just cruel. It's Oh I love the novelty of it though ended the first tryst days or like spectacular. They get your blood pumping start to think about thanksgiving. It's GONNA be Great. Thanksgiving is one of those great celebrations. Lots of family and lots of food which is good and really looking forward to it before we get going. The three of us were talking about the mail that we've been getting income. Just huge huge. Thank you to all of you out there. One of the things that we were talking about before we hit record was not only how thoughtful some of the email is but the tone with which you guys engage with us. You hear all of this conversation about how toxic the world has become and then you look at this email and it's just the opposite. It's so thoughtful. It so kind I just been so struck by it. Yes and it's not that everyone always agrees which I love but that it's always in the spirit of figuring out like what's a useful helpful way to think about the difficult topics that we think about which makes it really great to read any any kind of extends the conversation beyond our conversation which I really liked to. which makes you feel like you're conversing with our listeners? And then also giving rise to conversations because that's what the world needs more so so thank you to everyone so we have topics for this week. We never really talked that much about personal finance and so I wanted to talk about the biggest money. Mistakes people make and here. I know you brought in a topic as well. Yeah so I thought it would be fun to talk a little bit about the rise of the micro influence and and a good thing or not and what its influences on. The marketing landscape is a huge trend in marketing. Right now great so recently Felix. You're telling me when you were running the MBA program. You helped launch his course top by one of our colleagues on personal finance finance yes. That's why you were talking about how popular it is among our students even though it addresses what on the surface seem like a bunch of really mundane rain topic. Or maybe. That's part of the secret so when you have conversations with our students about you know how to invest in the stock market. There's just amazing how much they know. And how how much many of them have personal experience. Also but then they're these other aspects to more personal finance like with artificial implications of getting married. Like how you do you think about buying a house. Is that a good idea. Not such a great idea in the lives of our students and in our own lives these other really big decision set off matter and and it's also interesting fields because the field is of personal finances populated with so much garbage and then also personal kind of hived off right which is these are enormously personal personal decisions and their complex psychological decisions. Yeah because these are not like. Should you buy a house. It's really about well. Wait a second. What does it mean to have a home? And do you need a home now in your life or value mobility take. Let me start with this question. Very simple what do you think are the biggest mistakes. Young adults make when managing their money. So we'll get started. which is I think? The first thing is that people can understand the importance of savings. It's not the dollar amounts that you save. It's the habits that you develop as a saver when you're young that end up being the important things over time. So yes you should save when you're young because Oh compound interest and Blah Blah Blah but the real recent. You should say sorry sorry. That's a big idea that I just blah blah away but the real reason why you save when you're young and you try to save a fixed percentage is because you developed the habit and so much of this is about developing good habits so I think that's the number one mistake I'll give you a couple of others and it varies by country but in the US. We still have a preoccupation with owning a home. I I think and I think we are fixed on the idea especially young people that we should own. And I think that's a mistake for a lot of people and so they want to own too early and the undervalue renting and I think renting at certain times in your life is really powerful and really liberating and understanding that those are alternatives as opposed to I got got to stop renting as soon as possible. which is the logic you hear all the time? I think that is kind of problematic and then the third one I'll just mentioned they're just briefly. Lee Is there are so many programs where the government gives you an incentive to save that young people don't take advantage of so that includes things like employer matches. It includes things like health. Savings account includes five twenty nine for your kids. The first order rule for any saver should just be Max out on everything that is tax advantaged. And just take that for what it is which is a boon. I really loved ideas that me here just explained I think the first one about about saving to me. It's often part of a bigger issue of procrastination. You know no one thinks Oh my God. This is the weekend when I sit down and I think about my financial future. That is just link not the weekend you ever want to have right ahead of you and so ver putting off saving but also even if you jump over that Hump then the question becomes or do you have a vanguard account or do you not have an accountant. So it's it's all of these little decisions that then prevent you from doing something dat in your heart you really know. This is writing to do and so my advice is always non on of this really matters. Open some account with one of the big firms and you don't have to do a thousand hours of surgery to figure you're out who has the lowest fees and you don't have to think a lot about chilly. Invest in mutual funds or ETF's chew some day targeted fund and just make it a habit. So this is your point here. Just make it a habit to put a little bit of money away and don't be deterred by the seeming complexity of making these kinds of decisions in my expense. Many people get stuck by just a multitude of decisions that you have to make. They also get confused about they. They don't observe kind of the rewards very quickly so in a way if you focus on the dollar amounts then you won't observe rewards quickly. It's not about the dollar amounts it's just about the act. It's not about the payoff today. But it's about the payoff over time. You know another thing is I've always been struck. By how every big life event creates a financial inflection. Flexes Point Buying a house getting married having kids and it's always struck me. How much pressure there is at every one of these big inflection? Flex points to buy the bigger house to have the more extravagant wedding to put your kids in the most expensive private school. I think it's so important to really think hard at at every single one of those big life events about what's right for you and in particular not falling into the trap of buying the kinds of things that demonstrate eight that you have arrived at. You're doing well buying into the most expensive zip code buying that house. That has a larger floor area because those those are sort of simple metrics on which you can compete so I think in addition to I I loved me. Here's point owning a house is not foregone conclusion in fact just financially speaking seeking when you think about how concentrated your investment is in an asset that at least over long historical periods sometimes speeds. Inflation sometimes doesn't doesn't beat inflation. That's a financially completely not obvious position. And there's no overarching dominant financial logic. That says buying a house is such a great thing to do. I particularly liked this idea of young me that you raised kind of you know a weddings and housing and education. So I I think it's so interesting when you make a comparison between a lavish wedding and a down payment on a house like a significant down payment on a significant house. People don't make that comparison right but that's the relevant comparison when you think about starting your life with somebody and so it's okay to have a lavish wedding. If that's what you want but understand the tradeoff which I think is what people don't often do the other thing I was just GonNa Mention is ultimately he housing and education. Like you have to get those two things right. A lot of other financial decisions are kind of rounding errors in that context. Right so it's really worth just focusing in on those two and making sure you're good on those two and I think what people get confused about. Is they confused about whether this is consumption or invest. Yes so true and so I think in housing people under appreciate how much actual consumption is going on. And they over estimate estimate the amount of investment there like should by the ZIP code is the price is going to go up Blah Blah Blah. But I think what you really want to understand with housing is there's an investment component. But it's fundamentally how are you gonNa live your life and where you're gonNa live and what is your life look like data day and is it GonNa work right and in some way with education I I think will there be a payoff to the education for your children. You know I think higher ed I kind of believe. There is private school lower K.. Through twelve I'm not so so sure. There's any evidence of that and they're you're probably consuming you're probably not investing You're consuming the fact that you like your kids go into that school or whatever it is but I'm just being truthful with ourselves. I'm not saying it's good or bad. All I'm saying is be truthful with yourself about whether you're investing or whether you're consuming. Is there any advice out gary that you see quote unquote experts giving that you just fundamentally disagree with Herman de idea that you can know which stocks we're going to appreciate which is of course. What like seventy two and a half percent of all financial advice industry which is completely ludicrous? I mean just think about the logic of any one of the people you see on TV recommending a particular stock if they really knew that that's stock with appreciate Shea considerably do think they will go on TV and tell everyone I don't think so Felix you're getting to a point right and you're going to heart of the entire financial advice industry so send send the email to Felix. But but I'm joking right. which is one of the crazy parts about the last twenty or thirty years as we've convinced ourselves was it markets are grossly inefficient? And if you just talked to the right person that you'll get to be able to beat the market and the reality is no. It's not the roughly efficient and and certainly for the vast majority of people they should be saving and barrel Tivoli simple ways which include indexation ending. who'd keeping fees low now on the aside again for consumption purposes if you WanNa have some fun and you like WanNa go like you know by some or short beyond me you? Yeah but you know you go do that. But don't pretend like you're being smart. Pretend like what it is. which is you're having some fun? And that's great and and you may learn something. What is the biggest regret? You have about the way about a personal finance decision you've made do you remember we talked about out the financial freedom idea. I think that was sort of a watershed moment rather than thinking. You know. Easter a job out there TAT would provide greater financial benefits to just think much more.
