"Pace of both North Korean weapons tests and U.S. South Korea joint military exercises has accelerated in the past year. It is peak bloom time for the cherry blossoms along the tidal basin. And while this weekend's rain is not expected to affect the cherry trees, the annual blossom kite festival has been rescheduled. The kite festival was originally set for Saturday, but in pursuit of better weather, the festival made a date change. The event will still happen 10 a.m. to four 30 p.m. at the Washington Monument grounds. The blossom kite festival is free to all ages and attendees will be able to make kites listen to music, watch performances and even compete. Californians eager for sunnier days after relentless winter

"After years of drought, it was too much rain in snow for California. It was a strange stormy and cold winter for the Golden State. This week's atmospheric river was the 12th such storm in the states since late December. Californians initially welcomed the precip in chilly temperatures after a record hot summer and many years of drought, but the relentless storms busted the drought in two thirds of the state and broke precip records along the way. The national weather service says San Diego has already recorded 5 more inches of rain than normal and Los Angeles had the wettest beginning of the year since 2005. I'm Shelley Adler.

California gets a break from drenching rains

"California is expected to get a few days break from the weather. Powerful rainstorms of drenched parts of the state flooding roadways, causing landslides toppling trees and flooding hundreds of acres of strawberries, national weather service forecaster bob orwig says the state is getting a break. California's weather is much calmer than it has been. We do have some generally light rain potential coming up for part of the weekend mostly on Sunday. But or vex says next week could bring some issues. It looks like we may have a more significant storm affect California Tuesday and Wednesday with the potential for some additional heavy snows throughout this year. And some heavy rains at the lower elevation. So we could end up with some flooding issues as we go into the beginning to middle part of next week. So Californians will get a chance to clean up before the next round of winter arrives. I'm Donna water

Atmospheric rivers flood California with more rain, snow

"Thousands of people are under evacuation orders in Northern California, with flooding from the latest atmospheric river. Santa Cruz county is one of the areas hard hit by this latest burst of storms called the pineapple express. In SoCal, Nick muleta tells KG OTV, a flooded creek destroyed a portion of Main Street. I've never seen the creek go actually through the road, so it's just nuts to see, you know. It's really crazy. Dozens of homes are under threat and Watsonville and Lake oroville spillways are being open to head off flooding from the reservoir. In the Bay Area, a business roof collapsed, killing a worker at a Pete's coffee distribution center. Back-to-back atmospheric rivers are plowing through California

"California's bracing for another series of atmospheric rivers with a chance of flooding in the coming days. It's already raining in some areas with the heavier precipitation coming in a day and lasting through the weekend. Flood watching effect through Sunday morning. Northern and central California are expected to get the brunt of the storm. Melting snowpack in the mountains will intensify the situation. Residents are urged to be ready for rivers and creeks rising quickly. Forecasters warn mountain travel could be difficult with higher elevations expecting several more feet of snow. So much has fallen in the Sierra and other mountain ranges, residents are still stranded and struggling to dig out.

The men lift the body into a body bag before carrying it off into a truck. Authorities have deployed more than 200 rescuers to search for over 30 people still missing. Many were apparently trapped in houses that were buried under the landslide which according to officials was 13 feet deep. California, beleaguered by earlier storms, gets fresh snow

"A powerful weather system could affect the lower 48 states. California continues to be battered by fierce weather with fresh snow falling in the mountains, and even cold temperatures in the San Francisco Bay and elsewhere, but national weather service meteorologist David Roth says another storm is expected to target all 48 lower states, and the precipitation you get depends on where you live in relation to a warm front. If you're near and just north of the warm front, you'd be talking about heavy rainfall. If you're far enough to the north of the warm front and the cold air, yeah, you'd be talking about freezing rain and snow. And in the west, since it's a cold enough system, there'll be snow. That means at least a foot of snow for northern Arizona, southern Utah, and southern Colorado. I'm Donna water

"Michigan is one of the states being hit with icing conditions for a second round this week, and for some customers, that means they're still no electricity. A new storm teeming with freezing rain and strong winds is socking Michigan, creating a new hurdle for power crews, trying to repair lines that snapped in last week's storm. For resident Joanne Davis in Livingston county, no lights, and no water since last Wednesday, because she has an electric pump Davis tells the AP she just really wants to take a shower. She and her husband have been carrying buckets of water from a creek to be able to flush the toilets. California faces more wind, snow in multistate storm

"California is hit by a powerful winter storm while Michigan is trying to recover from one that left hundreds of thousands without power. Several feet of snow and several inches of rain are possible in parts of Southern California along with gusty winds while frigid temperatures are forecasted in the north as the storm moves out Saturday, says national weather service meteorologist Zack Taylor. Flooding threat, there have been reports of like mudslides and washed out roads and that kind of thing, but the worst of it is kind of winding down. In Michigan, rinker has been without power since Wednesday when the ice storm hit and I knew immediately we're not getting power back for a minute. I didn't expect it to be multiple days. You know, you wonder what the intelligence analyst in Richmond, who was hunting down traditional Roman Catholics at attending Latin mass, might have been doing if they were hunting down Russian spies. U.S. and European security services have been waging a parallel visible campaign to cripple Russian spy network. The German case detailed above, which also involved the arrest of the senior official in the BND, Germany's foreign intelligence service, followed roll ups of suspected Russian operatives in Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Poland and Slovenia. 400 suspected Russian intelligence agents, many of them with diplomatic cover expelled. What We Know About the Train Derailment in Ohio

"All right, let me just talk about this real quick and then I got a couple of people calling in. I love to get your take on this. But the chemical spiel collision in Ohio is I'm very concerned, right? They know exactly what chemicals were on that train. They know exactly what chemicals were on their train. I don't know if it's because they don't want to scare people or because they're disingenuous. They won't explain what chemicals are on that train. And what will it do to you? If you get direct exposure from those chemicals burning into the atmosphere, for instance, you have plastic just sitting on the table. It's not going to really hurt you. If you begin to burn plastic and you inhale that, the fumes from burnt plastic can really mess you up for a very long time. Same thing with tobacco, same thing with any other thing that you burn into the atmosphere. The burnt version of it, the combust version of it is very different than the chemical stable chemical form of it, which would be liquid form or power form or whatever form they have it in. Once you start burning it, that can be detrimental and it gets into the sky and it just don't somehow dissipate. It's going to come down in the form of, you know, when the weather turns, it's going to come down in the form of rain. Some of the particles are going to just, you know, I would argue, the particles would drop back down to earth. Soot and chemical compounds are going to be on everybody's house. you don't know what that's going to do to you.

Mark 10: 35–45: An Ill-Timed Request

"It's not unusual that people today are interested in these same things. They're interested in a kind of gospel that offers all the upside and none of the downside. But such a gospel is neither true to what Jesus is proclaiming as we're about to see. Nor is it true to human experience. No, Jesus says, let me tell you what it means. For me to go. And let me tell you what it means for you to follow. And then look at these fellows. It's quite incredible, isn't it? And then James and John, the sons of zebedee, from the fishing business, they came to him and teacher, they said, we want you to do for us whatever we ask. However, he was going to accomplish it. They recognized that somehow or another. He was going to introduce the messianic age. By the time the resurrection has taken place and before Pentecost, you will remember in 8 chapter one, it is these same disciples who come to Jesus and ask him the question, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? When does the good stuff start? Jesus, when do we get all the good business? You're going to rain on David's throne forever and forever. We understand that part. And that's why Jesus we want you to do for us whatever we ask. Well, what do you want me to do for you, he asked? Well, they said we'd like to get our reservation in for our seats. It's never too soon to reserve good seats. Jesus is talking about suffering. They're talking about status. They had enjoyed privileges to this point, hadn't they? The particular privilege of the transfiguration. Peter James and John taken by Jesus into a unique and wonderful opportunity. Perhaps that it made them think that they were deserving of such experiences. When God draws us close and introduces us to the wonders of his love, it's not because we're deserving of it. It's an indication of his amazing grace. But maybe somehow or another, they said, you know, there's a reason why he took us up on the mountain of transfiguration. We are the key guys. So why don't we just go ahead and ask him and see if we can't make sure our seats are reserved. One on the right one on the left. That would be nice Jesus. If you could do that for us.

Today, non binary model and activist rain dove is here to give us a pep talk on breaking the gender binary. And Kristen rain did not always plan to be a model. Nowadays, rain is hired for modeling campaigns of all genders and that's the way rain likes it. In their personal life, rain doesn't go by specific gender pronouns, although for this pep talk, we're using they them pronouns. We first came across ran on Instagram. There they post images of themselves dressed in both men's and women's versions of the same outfits. One of rain's mottoes that I really love from the pep talk is fuck the limits, basically saying like, okay, I'm tired of code switching from the female box to the mailbox or with mail to female whatever. I'm just gonna be me and kind of come out as me. And that doesn't just go for gender. That goes for sexual orientation as well. So y'all without further ado, let's.

This is something that was papered over way too easily and not addressed in a real manorama especially looking at you night wing super boy in this regard. I thought that was something that could have been some pretty good dramatic moments have been handled by people who know what the hell they were doing and so it just feels like a lost opportunity. Like it's there. Are things there that you know that. Kinda get okay if you're going to introduce this. There needs to be a payoff and for me as a viewer. It gets frustrating that there isn't the payoff that you you know you go to great length to set something up and then you don't do that and it. Just i think it feels more like a letdown because of that. So that's why you. That's what i think. I felt cheated new. You know not not anymore than normal Probably the biggest impact has been the number tree limbs and trees down. That's kept our forestry department fairly busy keeping things open especially when we got that real intense rain on saturday. A as was mentioned with the meteorologist of the ground is so wet. That when you get that heavy rain it doesn't have the capability to kinda soak it up. in a way that normally does so we're seeing the threshold of flooding. Be a little less than normal and we do get some situational flooding some of our low lying areas which can certainly Impact traffic in the flow of traffic. But nothing too severe at least so far. "This is radio boston. I'm john daring. It rained today again and all this rain is starting to take a toll for example in worcester. It's already the wettest. July the city has ever seen and we have eleven days to go in july by the way. So we start the week and the hour looking at the implications of this precipitation whether it's crashing long awaited summer plans or it's flooding basements or helping cause a shellfishing ban across most of massachusetts. Let's start out by talking about the weather itself checking in with. Wbz you are meteorologist dave epstein for look at when we might finally dry out and what kind of impact. All this rain is having dave. Welcome back thank you very much. Good to be here good to have you. It is not your fault but it is hard not to say to you dave. Come on hey you know. i'm. I'm suffering this with everybody else i have. I was walking around this morning. And i've got plants in the garden. That are doing things that. I've never seen them doing before. And it's not all good so any sun in our future let alone whole day of sun tomorrow looks actually pretty good. I think it's actually a beach day. In the middle of all of this temperatures will be up near ninety degrees. we should see mostly sunny skies. I can't rule out an evening thunderstorm but beach time. It should be a really nice day. you know. It's just one of those hot and humid dates that we have had so few of this month. So one of my favorite questions is how bad it just. How unprecedented is all of this rain. We've talked about worcester having the wettest july. They've ever had we discussed before how. We had the wettest first week in july over one hundred years. A here in boston so okay. Several days have passed since then. How bad is this relatively speaking. And after great question. Because i think sometimes our perspective on these things can get a little bit skewed and so it's helpful to look back at our records which go back to eighteen seventy two and if you look at the record since eighteen seventy two. There's a few things that stand out. Number one is. Today is our sixteenth day this month with measurable precipitation now. The most number days with any measurable precipitation is april. Twenty nineteen twenty one. So we're getting close to that and we're probably going to have more showers As we head for wednesday so that's another day as you mentioned we still have over week left in the month so it's possible that not only just july end up as one of the wettest. July's on record. But it's also the frequency of the rain that's really unusual Eighteen is the most number of days in july. We've ever had rain and we will get close to if not surpassed that kind of like a record. You don't want to root for that..

"Von. First time shortwave reporter. We're talking geos spin which we associate with the smell of fresh rain fresh oil and you said it comes from a bacteria yet it primarily comes from a big group of bacteria called tina may cds and the men in soil mostly comes from a single genus called streptomycetes streptomycetes. I love that keep going. Streptomycetes have evolved an uncommon survival strategy for bacteria. I mean you're a microbiologist. Indeed what bacteria do when conditions are good. When they're happy well it went. Bacteria are happy. They make more bacteria that's their whole vibe. So one cell splits into two. It's called binary fission right and if you're a type of bacterium that can swim sort of wiggle around before you divide you'll maybe try to situate yourself somewhere with a lot of good food for your offspring but for most of its lifetime. Streptomycetes isn't mobile. So if it's in a location with not a lot of food or if it starving it has to do something else to be sure. Its offspring have a good shot at survival. This bacterium is actually very weird. That's mahmoud abbas. He's a researcher. At university of california san diego and he worked on the same study as close as the starves to make sure that is offering will survive it start to produce doorman cells and these doorman sales can withstand dryness Lack of food and then once the environment is favorable so they have food they have water. They can grow again dormant cells. Okay that that means. We're talking bacterial spores. Which is very exciting. Basically win some. Bacteria are stressed they can produce these tough little cells called spores and those can withstand things that normal bacterial cells probably couldn't survive

"We're going to actually take real steps now. Yeah now oh. My god. I think they have to. I think they should be required to admit when it doesn't work like like i if you're going to call him elected official you have to you off when it if it doesn't if the rains don't come after that you have to like go on television and say well guess god doesn't want this so we have to do some shit and frankly i wonder if that's what he's doing i wonder if he's playing the utah politics game of. Maybe i can rally them. Maybe i can marshal them. If i say i started with magic. We'd you ride the magic okay. I didn't know okay That's interesting because my thought was more along the lines of a and it has the same lead in that we had to this conversation. Which is you can't get these people to listen to government on anything right So can i get them at least two to think about the fact that we're in a drought and to acknowledge that drought. Yeah by just doing prayer right then because there are now now now they've accepted. There's a drought. And there's there's something that we have to do about it. All he got from them. And yeah i you get them to buy in on their terms. And then as time progresses it's a little bit more what you're saying without the full acknowledgement. It's like so now when you're asking them. Hey you know like remember that thing that we had to pray for for a whole weekend right lake. We also in addition to that need to maybe water our lawns. Less right. 'cause you prayed you admit it. It's real exactly. You admitted it so now we all have to thing. Yeah and i'm wondering if there isn't some psychology of about sort of the kind of this kind of specific religious mind whereas if you if you can if you go at them i with hey these are the things that we need you to do from a civically minded perspective right. They will never fucking do it right because they do. Not think that way. I'm drinking extra water. You liberal cock. Here's how i'm yeah that's how you own the lib tards right right exactly. Just lake stand out in the street. Just like with your your hose on your selfie. Just wasting water right exactly while you are wasting though only water we have. I just don't want to give governor cox dot kind of credit but then we don't have a beat on this guy yet. They don't have a beat on him. If it turns out that he then you know in a week and a half or two weeks says here are the steps. We need to take I might be i'm Interesting is this how you manipulate religious people that it would be deeply sad But so brilliant. Yeah because yeah because they want to use magic that this is the problem everybody wants magical thinking to be the solution to get it. We all would rather magic. Be the the solution to our problems rather than us having to take concrete steps that mildly inconvenience our lives and maybe make our lawns. Look bad but jesus fucking christ man. Yeah i think take some steps. Yeah alright well. That'll be interesting to watch. We'll let you guys know. If if he does actually start taking steps fairly soon he will. And i think he would and i. That's gonna be proof for me right like because we have to take the has to start citing with concrete steps at some point right. You'd think so it's a it's a it's a an emergency. Yeah i i think though the confirmation for me would be if you see utahns starting to actually behave in on this issue and sort of collective and and community sort of way. Yeah that would be amazing. Because yeah i don't know what else is going to get through to some people. We have really really poor opinion of our fellow residents here it's well earned opinion. Works and i'm going to give it to them. Well kids Send us water. If he can dr. Terry i know you're up in the pacific northwest. Rebecca knew it was too late so she went to his house again. Forced to leave someone behind the tehran down. The old man's cheap like navigating a minefield but rebecca did it quickly and skillfully. He caught her. The crunchy heard wasn't lines like snow. But heavy high gloss lifting a boot. She saw it embedded in the madness. Desensitization kept moving. Despite the appalling discovery beneath her foot there was no mistaking any all. She knew she had been right. She had stepped on a watch through the cavernous more of the blobs. She made it to the porch and she found the door unlocked. The house was abandoned as far as she could tell. She called several times to check but no one responded that made incredibly thankful. She wants to alone show but she didn't want anyone in house to see what had happened to the opened. That was a picture frame hung askew on the wall and the old man stood with his family. He was about five years younger than and his wife for three grown sons. Smiled with the eldest son sat a toddler on his knee. He probably be about eight now. She dreaded to even imagine it was a stroke of luck that the keys were on the counter and uneven biggest stroke of luck garage door had been left open inside. Set a ninety eight chevy with battered red paint. Rebecca look the path before the truck would hopefully do. Those things couldn't stop her boots anymore. They show us how we're going to stop a truck. I would dry and that meant they could be easily navigated. Hopefully she hesitated getting inside the truck. She imagined dreaded. The idea that the rains would return. They would foam and a gain. She'd be trapped this time she'd be without hope and without hope the single counting breath she pulled the door open to casey. The engine and it was the sweetest noise she'd ever. The terrain was bumpy at first. But she got used to it fast. She said of course across the alien. The road was lost beneath the surface of flesh but rebecca found her way. Houses though covered offered plenty in the way of navigation. They made the skeleton of her mouth memory filled in the rest through the atrocious unspeakable landscape. She drove this. Blondes sprung up unbelievable numbers. The rain must have infected anything that touched the larger the annum larger the plan passing a farm. She observed large bush size. Growths sprouted from used to become mayor barrett. "Would play the musical time in like we didn't watch singing in the rain which i'm honestly really surprised about because i know he liked it because he would sing singing in the rain all the time like all the time and especially when it there. Whenever the rare occurrence of iranian california occurred. That was like you just singing all day and it'd be like oh shut up like please stop. We've heard it twenty times today but like it was still fun in that way and so like i feel like that's a big part of it of like. The musicals ended up liking a lot of the time. Have like some like attachment to my daughter in that sense of like Like i know he really liked this or like. I assume he really liked this musical. And so i think that's also why a part of why like like the young girls more than i thought i would. Is that like. It feels very similar to singing in the rain and greeson in a way of life the vibrant colors and like it's always like a good time during that movie And so like. I know like i don't i i don't know like i don't know if you watched foreign film at all but like i would assume that if he did it would be. That would be another. He would really like and so it's fun like watching stuff like that and being like i put my dad would like this like this is fun so kind of i like musicals I definitely see your point about like. I mean i mean it kind of goes back to what i was saying about like the escapist where like ending i think greece and and the young girls a road foreign saying almost more than sound of music The nazi stuff yet. Pick out but like those three especially to sort of embodied escapes joy that sorta can offer. Yeah i just. I just think this this movie the epitome of that in some ways i agree i liked it a lot..

The movie sort of acknowledged he cannot have to like. Take whatever you can get in get the chance to be a star in like the same thing as acknowledged in like don lockwood lake scene. Where he's like dignity always dignity like he was looks like eventually the way the movie sort of acknowledges like you just have to make it in any way. That that that you can is especially embodied Yeah was your favorite favorite scene your favorite musical number I think it also say seeing the rain. It's just iconic in the dances just super cute and sometimes when it's raining i think of that off number and i'm always like kind of makes rainy days little happier. I really liked that number. I love so much. I was walking around in the rain today. They put it on. My my airpods and i was just like i just wanted to lake. Walk up to everyone. I pass by like shake their.

"We launch sloss lorsch lonard. Yeah bring it back wonderful together but yet gene gene. Kelly is like absolutely captivating. It's all brings us back to the singing in the rain number. Which is the one raise on his own. Your first impressions of that number. Because that's that's that's the that's the fucking number fucking number. I i liked it i. It's one of those things where it's like. I'm more than familiar with the song. And so it's interesting seeing it like in its original context finally after like pop culture references after pop culture references after reference again and again and again like i feel like just about any relevant sitcom or tv show tries to some kind of spin on it in some way so so it was really interesting in person. He's so much fun in it. And like i love like the rain they have. It's not just like drizzle it's like dumping dumping dumping dumping in a way that like arguably no one would be outside if it was raining like that like you would stay indoors especially in. La like you doesn't rain water. Also when he filmed that scene he had a fever of one hundred wide. Yeah matt crazy you think you can have a cocktail clara trite rain number. Oh my god. I'm such a wimp. The true it's hit a fever hundred five And he still managed to dance because he's just he's just a frigging professional. I mean he he manages to just you know. I mean like you said make everything look effortless because he's rehearsed it to a t. Where a smile on his face in magalogue ladies just tossing out bytedance number. When he's been working on it for like six months ye-ye-yeah he's absolutely incredible in this and the other thing i know about this. That scene is that they ended up. Having to put milk in the water to make it. You could see the water a little more because you see the splashing a little more Something that was more opaque in the water. Oh my god. Yeah just make sure like people aren't like throwing popcorn was like okay. I remember specifically like hanging out sort of especially just in the middle of that movie and seeing the singing in the rain number with like five hundred people in the theater and you just sort of like this is so this is so cool at work here and i get paid the lake. Watch singing in the rain with a bunch of other people and dislike. Yana it really a really adds a lot to the experiences. An audience member to like see while those films with my dad or with you like we had a lot of dates there but And it really does. Change the experience in a big way totally. You're kind of. I don't know it's something like you're transported maybe back into the time Into a place where it was meant to be seen like people weren't really meant to see vs on their laptops. Yeah just being a big crowd of people like a grand cinema with like a with velvet seats in the whole like shebang. Just really love that. It's so fun you'll have to come check out the stanford theatre sometime.
