"Within Welcome. You're listening to the crosswalk with deacon. Kevin Andrews a show about living life at the intersection of faith, family and vocations. And now your host in Kevin good afternoon and thanks for tuning into the crosswalk this afternoon. I'm your host deacon. Kevin Andrews in the studio with me as a very special guest traveling to our area here in northern Michigan all the way from halfway around the world father meal on d d Meech is here from Slovenia. Originally. Now living in the United States in serving as a priest in the diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Father Demeter was born in nineteen fifty eight and Slovenia, which at the time was Yugoslavia, tend to elementary school in his hometown and afterwards entered minor seminary in the capital of Slovenia. He served briefly in the military and then studied theology and turn Italy and was ordained to the priesthood in nineteen eighty five. For seven years. He worked in different locations within Slovenia, and he came to the Holy Cross church in Fairfield, Connecticut, in nineteen Ninety-two after five years, he was incarcerated into that diocese of Bridgeport and after eleven years at Holy Cross served at Saint rose of Lima church in Newton, and then for a period at Notre Dame church in eastern two thousand fifteen. He was appointed pastor of St. 'em reach in Fairfield father. Milan welcome to the crosswalk. Thank you. Maybe just give the listener, you know, maybe just a little bit of a background, your your Slovenian background, obviously, and they'll pick up on on your accent, but maybe give them a little bit of a history of what it was like growing up in a communist country in growing up Catholic one one for sure. Was that. Let being member of Catholic church growing up and parents also an traditional Catholics. I mean, so it was noticeable then because that meant that all high places were reserved. I mean, you couldn't advanced in your career very high. I mean, if you were not to member of party or if you didn't nod today are directions, say this was clear from early years. I mean, I still vividly remembered now even fifth grade f his old where the teacher that was stunt communist party member in one one afternoon, we were sitting in classroom and it started to rain, and she pointed out to me is that's God's will. That is raining and you're going home now in rain. And you have to swallow things like that in not to say, you know, that would be a pressure, but episodes like that. I mean, you know how they tried to put you down because he go to church as a fifth grader. Yeah, but yeah, say, and then even when I would go to military service, I mean standing in front of commission there and because I was a ready, no seminarian. So the officers straightly. As are you freely there in seminary or they brought you in. Force you to do that said, no, I am really there. I mean, and I will stay. So is the military your military service required then by the government that all men of a certain age enter into military service that's vacuum? Yes, there was no exemption to the rules to say. Yeah, so yeah, and and also than it was clear that that others would get to serve nearby. I mean in Slovenia, I mean, but I was shaped like thousand kilometers or seven hundred miles down to Macedonia over there was a strong experience. Even in military. I mean. I mean that was brought up again. I mean all your seminarian. Alright. So you'll get a special duties to. For that. So in reality, I mean, they, they allowed you to practice your Catholic faith, but then they kind of tighten the screws to you and your family and other in other manners. Well, you can do it, but then we're going to get you in other ways essentially is how it played out. Exactly. Yeah, yes. So that's why then you start thinking, I mean, all right. What is this system and all that time in? Is it really what what they are advertising is really so freeing and equality and all that said, well, now it's not

"And really, I would be so happy. I mean in one day to have this celebration of Saint to were visual Bhargava we'll we're world praying for for for sure, and you can go on our website and find the prayers for for sainthood for Bishop Barroga. We're doing everything that we can to assist in the in the cause for sainthood in in in again, offering our our prayers for him. And I think actually Bishop Raica. You can hear them on the radio station praised the prayer for for sainthood for Bishop air. So we as a diocese are definitely behind it. What is this trip? This journey that you've taken in following the footsteps of Bishop bear go, what? What's the impact it? What do you think the impact will be on your own priesthood? When you go back to Connecticut. Sure in that is necessary to pursue. We're even in difficult conditions. I mean, even the say I was following the news in this days and of course is not so promising so positive. I mean, but even this kind of hurdles is necessary to overcome an and to do the best we can still. That's the task. I mean, ding. Worthwhile to pursue high main is is easy. So. Where really of that. I mean, any of in in the parish in Connecticut. I'm at right now. I mean, I realize I mean, it is a long way to go to improve the situation, but it is just simply necessary to persevere and also to have that in mind that only one is needed. Yeah. Yeah, I think I, for sure. I mean, obviously there's been a lot of talk in on, you know, on all the different shows here on the radio station and the news online. Lots of different ways to come at it. But I think in this, you know, like like Saint, Paul says in his letter to the Romans at where cinnabon grace abounds all the more I think in, you know, in this troubled time and we look at the life of father, Bishop Bishop era. Back before you even became a Bishop what he was doing that he was essentially just drawing on the strength of all the hardships in the things where he could have just packed it in and said, no, it's too hard. I'm going home. You know, we just heard in in the gospel last Sunday, you know that the that the Jews said this teaching is too hard. I can't follow him anymore and they left Jesus side in, we're kind of in that kind of in that same situation now where you know some of these stories are coming up again, those are those are stories of human weakness. They're not stories of the weakness that we find Christ. We only find strengthen in Christ. That you know, our faith is rooted in Jesus Christ. And and so when when we're unfaithful, he's always faithful. And so in in those hardships, I think you know, especially with Bishop era as an example that Christ is the only place that we draw strength to get to get through it, and it is worth it because the other option, you know, to leave his side only leads down a darker path and in. So I think, yeah, it's, it's a, it's been a tumultuous tumultuous time, but you know, hopefully your your trip here showed some bright light on that and some maybe some some renewed vigor that you can bring back to the diocese Bridgeport, that's for sure. And I concluded my journey yesterday, I went to Grand Rapids, and I found the nothern the exact location where father bargain that time started his no missionary efforts, and impressive thing was. That that he had a deed from the government United's of United States that he can purchase another grounds, I mean, and build the church there. And so I was those grounds there. I mean, this parking lot right now, but you say, oh, well, but this was the regional mission. Everything started from there and I kinda like concluded my journey. We're all started so that I can remember then. Well, all right. That's the beginning and well, one day we'll we altogether. I mean, I I would like to see. Not just the journey but to for all the efforts. Well, Milan I wanna I wanna thank you for coming on the crosswalk today. No of my prayers in your continued in the blessings upon your your ministry as you head back to Connecticut in for safe travels for sure. And I think you for coming on and sharing, you know your story. In your insights into individual Barroga. So thank you. And I wanna thank you for two and into the crosswalk today. Again, it's always a pleasure to have you join us here on the burger radio network. Just like Bishop Barroga life doesn't always doesn't always lead us down a path. That's the easiest in. Sometimes there's going to be hurdles and there's going to be obstacles, and there's going to be times where we need to get in the boat and get out of the boat and put on her snow shoes and trudge through the snow and in the path isn't always clear, but just like Bishop Barroga, you got to pick up your cross in follow Jesus in every journey begins with that. I now pray for you today. The you have the courage and the strength to pick up your cross and follow on beacon, Kevin, may God Bush. Are you a business owner or take maker? Would you like gain disability for your business? Thanks And so for part listening Catholic to radio the at crosswalk the same time, with underwriters deacon Kevin. are important part Join of the team. us again That's next our week operation exclusively call on eight, four, four, fair two, radio. three,
