The Slow Regrowth of Vulnerable Coral Reefs is Solvable

"Minds. Sarah, Hamlin I'm a scientist Mike Marine Lab in Florida and myself is growing car rates forty to fifty times a spade that Karl grows in the wild. Now there's a number of reasons while Koru is really important I mean who doesn't love going out snorkeling and seeing colorful reefs teeming with beautiful fish but they also provide us with goods and services whether that be tourism or employment the food table. And Florida align every system he is estimated to be worth about eight billion dollars not only that but these race protect I landed property from things like storm surge. So really good example of this is Hurricane Irma which was in two thousand seventeen had twenty five foot waves heating the Florida race track down in Lewke where I am and we had a storm surge at building, which is in Summerlin K. of only five foot. So we didn't have a rift system they're healthy ray system there you can imagine that that storm surge those waves would really decimate the land. So I I can hear your Australian accent Australia of course, famous for the Great Barrier Reef what's going on with climate change and coral reefs around the world? Well, wide was seeing a great reduction in live Carl Kaba So this is across the well whether it be Australia United States or any Pacific Ocean island nations. You might have heard of coral reefs as the rainforest say and that that's saying is because even the car reefs tyke out less than one percent of the seafloor. twenty-five percent of nine marine species actually rely on car roofs. At some stage of their life we're seeing Wolmar, she anik temperatures. We're seeing a lot more pollution going into the oceans, and this is resulting in las of live Carl tissue almost as much. If any consequences of climate change, I can think of the people who are really in contact with this are shocked and appalled and upset at a level that those of us who don't come into coral on a into contact with Karl on a daily basis. I don't really get I mean I have your you're in the Florida keys I have a nephew who's into a skin diving and spearfishing in Miami and he's a young guy, and just in the years he's been doing this the coral around Miami I mean he's like shocked and upset when he sees it and says, he can't really fish anymore just because of the change in the last decade, we have lost around ninety percent of that Caro cover in the last forty or fifty years and some of the race in the. Case now or the Florida Reef tractor as low as between four and six percent starting Caro cover, which is quite loy. So we're talking on zoom you have a fantastic backdrop of coral and I don't know enough to know what kind it is but we hear these terms like staghorn coral and I heard of Elk Horn coral what are the main forms of coral that you're working with and what do they look like? We have branching corals and we have massive Carl's so branching Caro's the Stag owns the call and you. Can picture what the antlers of a staghorn or alcorn look like they look exactly like that. So skinny branch is really perfect three dimensional habitat for fish and shrimp and all the Little Rafe critters out there, and then we've got a massive Carl's and these might be brain corals essentially look like the folds and grooves of a brain stock Carl's have They polyps alike little cop. So little stars and their every feeling Carl's they the Carl's that are creating the race and really growing that lodge Rafe structure that remained stable off the storms

Rafe Zonen's Rafe Sunshine heads the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State L. A. This level of resistance. The civilian oversight from the sheriff, which really did begin even before he took office between his election and when he took office is really unprecedented. He says. "Welcome to part two of our two part series on how the restrictions of Kovic Nineteen and the gym restrictions and not being are typical training environments or with our typical training. Groups is taking us to hopefully some new reflections and some new ideas in training in physical practice and its relationship and its relation to coaching. I know I've been learning a lot and been training differently in. It's really been good to sit down and talk to other coaches on how their training in how these restrictions are are bringing about reflections in them on Not only move practice but the meaning behind the movement and exercise and how this all relates to what we're doing as coaches and how we can all be better and stronger through all this last episode. We had Jeremy Frisch Rob sees and Dr Tommy John. This time we have Paul Cater Rachel Bell Covic and Raith Kelly. Paul Cater is the owner of the Alpha project. In Salinas California. He has over a dozen years of international level strength and conditioning experience working with teams like London. Wasps rugby the Baltimore Orioles. Usa Rugby as well. Having years of experience working with scholastic level athletes as well as adult populations. Paul has been a huge mentor to me. In My own coaching process. He is an insightful writer engaging coach and someone that. I'm really excited to have on this show for his first For his first appearance on the show Rachel Bell Covic made history as the first female strengthen edition coach in Pro Baseball and then recently made history again as the first female hitting coach. In pro baseball she was a guest. Recently episode. One Ninety three where she talked about not just coaching. But also organizational leadership and Rachel has an amazing ability to take many aspects of life that go beyond just just and coaching and related. Back to what we're doing and I'm excited to have her back on the show for this segment. Rafe Kelly's the owner of evolve. Move play he has done probably more physical movement practices. I could explain in the next one or two minutes But they ranged from anything from the martial-arts to basketball to working with fit and now his current work in natch Parker and specifically natural parker. Rafe is a amazing teacher. Not just of movement practice but also the meaning behind human movement practice and really what it means to be human in our environment. There's so many implications with what Rafe is doing and and training and also I. I really am excited to have him. Because if you are near trees if your nature you have a gin and so that and rave is going to get into a little bit of his own Natural Park Corps movement practice today. These are three guests. I'm really excited to have and this will finish part two of this miniseries. It's been a fun ride and I hope you guys enjoy it. Let's get onto it so your departure. You have one of the nicest and most awesome. It's like the Mecca Man Jim. I I've always loved going down there. It's it's I would say that the best training sessions that you have you and I have probably had together have been outside your Jim doing things like running the trails and the beaches and the dunes and and everything that goes there. I mean it's been good all around. But how's your Transition Ben? Getting away from the What did you call it before your gym? The pretty prison the guilded cage. How's your time away from the Gilded Cage Ben? Now in this return new essentials essentials. It's been it's been I would say career lifesaving. I don't use that. I don't say that lightly I think I gone so far away from my own. Trading Process Regurgitating you know novel ideas or but that our old for me Definitely not do my own training not not discovering and and we're just getting so let's say burdened by the administrative part of that. I became to begin to low My my career path and I think just training itself really I mean I I I throw a new a new baby and earn a toddler. Not kind of add some different challenges. But it's been it's been essential. I mean it's been an absolute use this word lightly either blessing in To just be forced to stay home you know. Fortunately I have a nice setup garage so able to mix in some of my favorite things but outside recommit to running really. Yeah that's something we talked about before. Too was.

Do I need to have a dedicated server for my website?

"I begin I want to emphasize the fact that your website is one of the biggest assets in your business. It's where business is done is where people find out about you. It's where they learn if they WANNA do business with you. It's where they buy things from you where they consume your content in the online world. It's like your shop so investing in your website is probably one of the best investments. You can make now. I'M GONNA explain if you actually need a dedicated server for your business. I'm going to talk about the different stages of business. Maybe you're not there yet. Maybe you will upgrade to a dedicated server later on. But how do you know win? I'M GONNA get into all of them. I A dedicated server is always going to be better than a shared server. There are so many advantages to it. Security advantages bandwith advantages support advantages. I'll go through them all but just to lay it out. Let's start with the one disadvantage of dedicated server. It's more expensive. That's really it. That's the only downside of having a dedicated server just to give you an idea. We have a dedicated server. We use a WBZ engine. It's the best hosting forward press sites. Their support is out of this world. It's the best in my opinion. I've tried a lot so much. So we partnered with them to give all our listeners and amazing discount You could check that out over at one zero zero. Nba Dot net slash resources. There's a link right there and a code. You can use to get twenty percents off your first payment whether it's an annual payment or a monthly payment. I would recommend it if we didn't use it now are dedicated server which allows up to a million visitors without a hiccup. Every single month costs six hundred dollars a month. Yep It's expensive but because I have my own server. I can all my websites on their can host my personal website. I can host My Ninja website can host my one hundred dollars a website. And it's not GonNa even bat an eye at that traffic because it's so powerful. Now we used to be on a shared server on wbz engine but it actually became more cost effective for us to move to a dedicated server. Because WE'RE PAYING. Nine hundred dollars in overages every single month because of the traffic we were getting On the hundred dollars because of this podcast good problem to have but we totally Didn't notice we're about two months in our overages or crazy. As a show is growing. Our traffic was growing so he realized We need to do something so we actually a message the BP engines support they said Hey. Your traffic is quite high. And you're sharing the server with other people so we have to kind of Slow Down Your bandwith to be fair with other people explain what that means in a moment might be more cost effective for you to have a dedicated server which costs six hundred dollars but that was cheaper saving three hundred dollars a month by going with a dedicated server. So let's get into the advantages and the number. One advantage is bandwidth. Now when you're sharing a server with other people which is a shared hosts this is very common in most website hosting you're sharing the ban with the speed in the space on that server with other companies so they're going to basically Monitor your speed and slow down your site if they have to to accommodate You know your bandwidth meaning that they're gonNA strict your bandwidth making your site. A little slow and sluggish share a bowl popcorn with your friends and one of your friends is grabbing handfuls of popcorn. Everybody's taking it one by one so the shared server host is GonNa say I'm sorry that's not fair for everybody else we're gonNA limit your number of popcorns so the there's enough for everybody else. The other show the shared service at some times. This is rare but it happens Somebody on the shared server has an issue has a bug has a virus. Something goes on and it takes down the whole server so your service totally down. You didn't do anything and neither to everybody else on that shirt server but one of the people had problems there for y'all suffer this is not common but it can't happen as happened to me in the past ten years but it's just something to keep in mind. The third advantage really is when you go to a dedicated server Whoever's supplying your servers like wd engine they're going to give you a higher level support usually comes to the higher tier of support. You're going to get technical experts. That can do the work for you like sometimes I'm having an issue. My website have a conflict with a plugin on wordpress. I'll go into him have been a bit of an issue. They go into my account and they actually just fix it for me. I don't have to do anything they don't say. Oh it seems like there's a problem with this plug in. Maybe you want to try this. No they don't do that. They just go ahead and they get it done for me. They say okay. It's all good now because I'm paying premium rate and the value as a customer. So the serve you at a higher level of priority and a higher level of service now when things go down when things are not well when your site is down. It's like Code Red Right and you need fast response of support so this is really really helpful when there's a crisis on your website and need to make sure it's all the soon as possible even if it's just a few minutes there on your issue asap and usually you're back in running with no issues whatsoever in a few minutes. It's not that simple to solve some problems If you're not a dedicated server sometimes we need to do rebut the server Respond the instance. And because you're the only one on the server that's totally fine. You're down anyway so rebooting. It is just a quick solution. You can't reboot a shared services. Everybody's GonNa go down We're talking about hundreds of websites so they got to find other ways to solve it. Migrate you to a different server. It's a little bit of a mess. Now Russ six hundred dollars a lot of money and if you are not getting a lot of traffic you may not see the Roi My advice. If you're just getting started shared servers fine. It'll get you started. We'll get the ball rolling. You don't need to spend a lot of money at the start but once I start getting a hundred a hundred and fifty thousand visitors a month and you can learn this from Google analytics. You can go to similar web It's a great website for you to check out how many visits our website gets. And it's just a ballpark number. But the point here is that once he goes over a hundred grand. I'd say a hundred grand hundred thousand visitors a month. It's time for you to consider choosing a dedicated server have traffic. Your Business should be rolling. You know unless you have a conversion problem on your website. You're converting all these visitors and it's a good foundation to have a dedicated server. Once you get to that point as you start growing beyond you know all these big websites all these big blogs the millions of visitors a month they all have dedicated servers because they know the value of up time of speed bandwidth and they don't want to risk it and disappoint people that come to the website. I got more in today's topic. Today's cuny Wednesday before that. Let me go love to today's sponsor support for today's show comes from Ernest. Do you have student loans? Nba Go to Ernest Dot com slash NBA today terms and conditions apply to Rob Teddy Skewed Wednesdays. Question from Russ Do. I need a dedicated server my website. I highly recommend you consider once you get past the hundred thousand visitor mark. There's a lot of advantages to it. And I find that. It's a great R. A. Y. The other thing you want to consider is that the faster your website is and that has a lot to do with your hosting the more likely you'll be ranked higher on Google. Google does prefer faster websites. If you WANNA know the speed of your website or how fast it loads or How well you're doing you can go to GT metrics. It's a great tool free online to check out your page speed and page insights by Google. Another one I remember testing out our page speeds before and after dedicated hosting and I realized wow makes a huge difference. Of course a lot of though you optimize your website. The images you know How much is being loaded on? Every page now has a lot to do with your page speed but those tools. Washy show you what you can do to speed up your

Bank of England keeps main interest rate unchanged at 0.75%

"Money tree policy committee meeting as the governor of the bank of England is one of the most unpredictable of his tenure money markets are pricing the chances of a twenty five basis point cut just under fifty percent same as a toss of a coin that's down from seventy percent two weeks ago as improving economic indicators may trade is less sure the bank needs to take action over to say joining us here in our London studio John Rafe UBS heads off you Kate rates a strategy will earlier Richard Jones called and said he reckoned it would be a cop today what do you think how you use the use the expression coin toss I think you're right it is a coin toss which is not in possession of some of the information the bank of England is what they've basically told us is that going to act early and aggressively if an awesome when they see a need to ease if I see anything in the data that worries them that likely to certify first and ask questions later have they seen something yet we don't know its internal intelligence some gets published next week which is quite significant there is the mantra policy report being published today which will have to tell for cost and information as well off he was that not gonna cut we've been saying that for a while and on the economic outlook I'm what we do know in leading indicators in terms of him awesome things we don't miss any case for them to do so we wouldn't be having this conversation were it not for the comments made about three weeks ago by Mister Khan and others yeah absolutely and I think that you know initially it really pushed up of bets on an interest rate cut but now they've sort of kind of waned essentially why do you think that that is what I think when they the comments were initially made the markets what was he trying to understand why they'd come out at that time it was any three weeks off the last meeting when they sounded much more sanguine that they came out with these much more urgent sounding calm and acting in a more private preemptively and there was a sense that maybe they were speaks about Walt had rob hadn't happened post election post clarity around that face the first phase of brexit that and the bounce back they were hoping for was materializing so that's why the market reprise so dramatically now we've had the PMR eyes in the CBI survey which suggest will be early in soft later and I'm very early stuff like that that's been something of a rebound people say well maybe they weren't talking about this meeting that just talking about that reaction function going forward and if the PMR is tell us anything it's that there has been a bit of an improvement that full they don't need to go as soon as today so this is just huge confusion and that's why the market split down the middle works I say to you have the C. B. eyes you said PM eyes with holiday of course it's backward looking I understand that is much less impressive I mean inflation weakest in three years British consumers shopping stores during the the December the key pad or if I mean if you were being really solid about what you believe that that that's going to be your main consideration I mean I think what what they really told us a nice comments it wasn't just that they sounded concerned it was about them saying pretty explicitly at least for those members from now on we can out act very swiftly and therefore it becomes more about we looking at those we are looking forward in two cases if they wait until the end of the first quarter to say well how did the holiday to look for January December their argument seems to be that'll be too late so they have changed the way they behave and that's why it becomes on certain for markets because they're looking at real time data the market often isn't privy to so that's why it's introduced this new amounts of volatility we thought and still think that they'll cut in may by which time it will be clear that Q. one wasn't grates and momentum starting to fade again as we head through the air in the brexit situation sauce come back in focus what they're suggesting and what the market reprocessing is happened is maybe they're not going to wait that long neck and what first and more about it often okay very briefly in the kills market is looking pretty cheap across various maturities I mean I'm in the hunt for yielded across Europe yeah well I mean that that yeah you need to say you have to call the law yes any of around fifty basis points that was awful costs for the end of the first quarter so we've got that by the end of the first month I'm at these levels you know guilt actually started a quite expensive to us partly depends on what goes on elsewhere if treasury yields keep falling away to have some of the last few days then you know never to be guilty of willful some offered the role that we think that they'll under perform treasury's in on the ongoing rally from here the front and we think it's likely to get a very dovish message today whether the MPC council not said every scarred for from ten years to for a bit further with

"Kiss let lie if I could be like go back in time and write about anything in sports. I might go back and cover like the Flint tropics for that, right. I would like the movie team. I guess if I had to pick a team to cover, I mean, the Pacers were like the closest dynasty and they're funny. Here in the by Floridians that was AB. That would be a fun one yet. Earl Monroe is thinking about signing with the Pacers goes in the locker room, sees three of the players put guns on top of their. I think I'm out. And that's like the nineteenth craziest day that was the most that was known as the most stable aviator for those. Those are the guys that everyone was like, those are good guys. I love this story about like George, Mike, and he's the Commissioner. He's the reason there's the blood red white and blue ball because he was blind and he couldn't follow the orange ball. So they, he thought he might be able to see the red white and then they're gonna have to paint it. They're not ready. So they paint them and then they patent them, but they don't get a patent on the color scheme. So make no money. It's all navy. They've only can't literally can't be. You just couldn't make the ABA stories up. Another ABA story that I want. It's just but you you bring to life those guys and, and you know that's the in all seriousness. Some of these guys were talking about Connie Hawkins Spencer Haywood like they were the league that said, okay, the NBA doesn't want you come play here. Make money have a career well, and they and I think Michael Goldberg. Who's also since past, you know, really, very clearly explained how they were just hanging on their. Their thought was never outlasting. NBA was just to get absorbed into the NBA and I think they spell that out pretty late in the chapter. It sort of comes in the more serious part of it in that the influence the ABA had on NBA basketball in bringing in opening up the game and using the three point popularizing shot at having Dr j. and David Thompson and the idea that this sort of more free flowing game that really sounds and looked like the basketball. We're used to seeing in the NBA now started there and then when when they're. Was the expansion merger, whatever, whatever you like to call it, bringing those players in getting Dr j. and George Gervin into the NBA Rick. Ever that that opened up the game, and then you saw sort of start to see it become this, the beautiful athletic high above the rim sport that we know of story that I just hadn't had forgotten again or or read in Terry's book and forgot the what, if of Dr j. going to the Knicks. I don't think I did. You guys know that. Sorry. I don't think I knew that story. I think Terry wrote a visit in the like, you know the master of the way when I looked when you go back to loose balls like every everything pretty much is in there, but it is. There's so much basketball. They're great these days he tells you spent and everything. Yeah, you just slip your mind. So so correct me if I'm wrong, Dr. J. story is this the nets get absorbed into the NBA. They have to pay some sort of territorial indemnity tonight. Which is like four million dollars. They are then broke, right? They can't pay Dr Jay's salary and I can't. I couldn't quite get specific handle on it, but this is the story is essentially if the Knicks in that position of power had just said, just give us Dr. J. is part of the deal. They could have had Dr Jane. They did not. And the rest is well, the seventies turned out quite nicely for the next. You know, in a weird sort of way. And that's essentially what Philly did do you know they've realized the situation paid up, paid up the debt, and then Dr James becomes a sixer. Now it's interesting to you mentioned you mentioned right? If the AB the echoes of the modern game in the NBA one of the things that's so you know, we talk all we in our little NBA bubble. We talk all about the on the evolution of the game, and there are more threes and five out, and these rule changes to liberalize zone defense and blah, blah. And those changes are real and they happen over time..

"So that when shack turned forty, he would make four million dollars a year for the rest of his life. Shack is a very smart dude and. He's had a lot of time to consider the whole shack, Kobe thing, and there is a certain detente there. But the one thing I called shenanigans on even when I was doing this interview was the idea that this was all for show and it was all good. You know, it wasn't only been broke up the team well, and the story about. You know, Phil, Jackson finally said the bickering that's in the book you to enough of the bickering. I don't want to hear another word and then Kobe went on. Did an interview with Jim gray and shack went to the. Shek lazy outta shape, doesn't care about basketball as much as I do and check. You just said it literally calls Kobe and says, I am going to kill you at practice and they have to have like people ready. I could prevent this Payton and Karl Malone witnessed cook, I guess, is a good thing. Carl Malone is there is there aren't too many other people on the right. Imagine having any chance at slowing shutdown when he decides tonight. After someone, you know the stuff that was fresh to me there because it had escaped through my brain or something was shack talking about young, Kobe rookie. Kobe was really interesting. I don't know if you want to. Well, one of my favorite stories about that was so Del Harris is the coach. Kobe jacking up shots jacking up shots, so del pulls him out of the game because he's out of control and he sits down and shag very clearly remembers a guy coming down from the stands insane, put put the kid back in and Del Harris is turn around and goes. I'm not putting it back. And he said, Dr. Bus says to put him back in, I. I've never heard that before. I bet makes me feel better because I don't remember that remember that. Yeah. And shack says he Coby played an one St. ball only could get buckets for himself. Phil trashes leaderships Phil stress Koby before right times over. But it was interesting to hear shack talk about him is this sort of young guy who didn't really get team basketball at all, even how to interact with your teammates. And Phil had some great quotes about that saying, Kobe, you want to be a leader, but you're not, you know, you don't ever talk to these guys like all they talk about is cars and girls and music. And so you know, feels like we'll try it out man because you you don't music are like perfectly okay. Subject matter for for young people. I mean, it's no that that chapter unsurprisingly is very entertaining from start to finish. Okay. Here's another one. This is this is a guy talking about being in the training room at a game said, I think the guy taping me was a poultry farmer. Well, that was from the VA. I think that's Larry Brown. Right? So here's my question was the most agonizing part of the book picking what forty pages worth of materials us about the ABA because as Terry Pluto shows in loose balls which everyone I would read five books about the the craziest validating. You're validating Mike engrave here because you wanted more ABA. Oh, well, he got more ABA. He Ridgely so we would split up these chapters we we did stuff together, but we take separate chapters in the ABA was one of race babies, and he came back and said, you know, I don't know what was supposed to stay to six thousand words chapter or something like that. Race like this is not happening. I was like, just go for it and let them cut it later. And of course they didn't cut any of it was also spectacular. We we, I mean, lutron, he trimmed a little bit of it. But yeah. Much enormous. I think we didn't care. We took some Kentucky colonels out which on me out because there's some good Huby Brownstone camp here. Stuff that was John y, Brown Brown, talk Ampere just gun to hold him a couple of years ago. Right. I believe Louie. Dampier. Finally, the veterans committee. Yeah. Yeah. Which was obviously long overdue. Yes, absolutely. As just I mean, brisker it's crazy. It's two days to it..

"Kind of like the struggles that that that women had to go through to Carol Blasio ski, telling the story about how she tells this story about how she had to basically strong arm her entire high school into giving them a women's team. She wanted. She threatened to play on the men's team if they didn't start a women's one another, I guess we got to give her what she wants and Nancy, Lieberman telling the story about America park and step out their stuff and stuff in her jacket to look bigger on the stuffing and saying, are you Mr. Rucker and like no is like, well, I guess I can play here that all that was something those chapters. Are something that you wouldn't. You wouldn't necessarily expect to see in the book in as depth as we as we fought to make things happen. And I don't know, it's really important is really related to that. I mentioned before, I'll give you some quotes in a second, but I mentioned before the sort of be endings that you get people on in what one of my favorite interviews, no matter how many times he does it in how many contexts I listen to Christian late in her talk about the dream team all day long and being the twelfth man on the dream team. It's just fascinating to me and he recounts in the book just this is a little random thing that stuck in my head. He's talking about Charles Barkley and Barclay was the best player for a lot of those Olympics on that team. He that was like peak, Charles Barkley won the MVP Ninety-three Lagos coming up on that and he talks about, you know, and we all think of Barclay as you know, coast to coast of just running over people rebounding post up. It's like, man, I'd crisp later says, I've never seen a guy who's maybe six, four protect the rim, like Charles could protect the rim, and it. It's one of those things where it doesn't come out unless someone is sitting down and comfortable and talking about something, they love like Charles Barkley and rim protection, like you just you don't hear about it and it was people forget what a great player Chuck was in its because such a larger than life personality now. And he has a lot of opinions and he's a TV star and all that. And and he did change teams and I think fair unfair. Back in those days, it deluded your career because you know the league was all about start to finish like bird like magic, not like Jordan because it didn't end up that way with Jordan. Almost. I like to pretend that Washington stuff we'll do right is Ahah Thomas start to finish in Detroit that was sort of a badge of honor. And so because Barclays changed teams a lot, I think some of that got lost, but one of the things rape and I talked about and this happens sometimes was one day I just remember I woke up in the middle of the night and I called Ruth. Next I go, do we have enough? Barclay start thinking. We don't wanna leave. These people out in Barclay, of course, was the star of the dream team chapter as as he should have. He was the star. I love. I love. The story, and I never get tired of hearing it is when they said, when Barclays coming down to shoot and it's bird Barkley enjoyed or coming down in its bird and it's Pippen and Jordan, they're like, yeah, yeah, yeah, championship ask it. Only you guys go down there. You know, that's great thing about Angola putting goals in trouble. Olympics. There was something else I wanted to say, oh, and also about the ninety two Olympics. This may be as petty, but also may be interesting Mark, Cuban randomly Chirps about the ninety two Olympics, and you have all these international players talking about how influential dream team was in in Turkey and palca, soul, and Tony Parker starting their career, and Cuban just out of nowhere pops in. And it's like, that's what happened was the internet happened and everyone could watch these guys play in technology changed, and there were more ways to watch games and all of this, like forget the dream team international Bassil would have happened anyway..

"Billy Packer tells a long. It might be the longest single quote in the whole. It's a whole page page of about Bob Knight and Michael Jordan on the nineteen Eighty-four Olympic team. And I, I was two years old at this point in time I didn't. I didn't know anything about this team really. Bob Knight didn't want to pick Jordan on this. He was coaching the Olympic team that you didn't wanna have Michael Jordan on the team because what is with these Olympic coach, our man, it's a power he's. He says, I can't have to guard, can't shoot. They thought Michael couldn't shoot, right. Well, that was well, he Bob in his head because he in the in the tournament that year, they Indiana had beaten North Carolina by forcing Michael to shoot from outside and Jordan had an off night. So of course, Bob Knight little will run with that for, you know, once you once you have confirmation by as you, you can. You can live on that for a long time anyway. He says, he doesn't want him on the team. But he has to take them, of course, because he's Michael Jordan and. Then Billy Packer keeps meeting up with Bob Knight as as they get further and further closer to the Olympics and every time he sees them, it gets better and better. He's like, well, you know, I'm still not crazy about the shooting, but the guy he competes, he's a real foxhole guy go to war with him any day. Then we need to refine to retire foxhole just needs to retire that. And tire Bob Knight. Well, I guess we already did that's. And so then they embark on this exhibition tour of the states, and this blew my mind to just this fact that the college players played nine consecutive games against an NBA. NBA selections. They somewhere all star team some had, oh, no, they were really good NBA. I'm young writer covering some of this and this team with Michael Jordan crew, Chris Mullin Patrick Ewing. They beat them. They went nine and oh, against the NBA and these eight were annihilating. And when you when you read about those, see I'd forgotten about that. It's like the version of the dream team scrimmages from nine. Like I just forgotten about point. Would you love to see video of those games? And by the end of that, an exhibition tour, Bob Knight comes back to Billy Packer, and he says, he's going to be the greatest player of all time. To my notebook disguise going to be the greatest player who ever lived right? The whole everything about Jordan that the way he signed with Nike, that's a great adventure that we, we detail, but even the vintage Jordan years, and we do have Steve Kerr in the book talking about his his clashes with him and even Jordan at the end of his career. One of my favorite parts was Doug Collins. So Doug Collins is coaching Jordan at the end in in Washington, and I think I forget what the streak was helped me out Rafe footed certain amount of twenty point games or double digit towards digital case something that's simple and he's playing on, you know, a bad Washington team, so they're losing. And Doug Collins looks, and I don't think he really realized that the time, what was it steak? But he's like, well, I'm just gonna take them out. So he took them out and you know the next day Jordan system, do you really think you know I'm no good anymore or do you think I don't have it and the cons is like, no, no, I don't think that I just thought we were working to win the game and really, no. So the next game Jordan goes out and he goes Yuli me until I tell you take. Take me out. This is what he says the Collins because he just goes by nana's scores like kazillion points. And Doug Collins is like, he's like, Nope, not coming out. Nope. Not coming up for like the next three games. He averaged like twenty five points ago. He's scored fifty one and then forty five names and it was. It had been became a big story before that because he had eight points in Jordan hadn't scored under double digits in over a decade or so. It was just and they're the media jumped on it and Jordan turned around. And yeah, he dropped ninety six and the next two? Yeah. And that's just Jordan and.

"W. e. the other piece that I'm glad you guys devoted so much space to are the point shaving scandals of the fifties and sixties and in particular, what it did to Connie Hawkins who was and Roger Brown and Doug Moe, but really, Connie Hawkins should be. Like a doctor j. level household name and instead lost six years of his prime. Part of the I I know that at ESPN were having discussions about like, how do we sell a movie to our viewers that's so much about the fifties and sixties. But like that is a riveting story that has to be told like what happened to Connie Hawkins and Roger bound is so wrong, and you guys really bring it out in the book I mean, and you mentioned he quit. He could have been Dr j. before Dr. I mean, Dr j. tells a story in the book about he first learned about Connie Hawkins when his junior high coach sees him pick up the ball, he's sees his hand and says, hey, little hawk, he says, well, who's hawk? That's Connie Hawkins. He's got the same big hands as you so that it really is that it's there. Yeah. And so for those who don't know, Connie Hawkins was a great high school player from New York City. He was going to go play in college, but before we ever got a chance, you got a call from the DA's office. He had to go back to New York City. He had no idea why he was interrogated left in a room for that. That's not an exaggeration. He was interrogated for three days, not able to put it out. I want to call my mother because he have known a Jack Molina's, Jack Molina's vob associated. So Jack Molina's was appoint shave. He actually played for the Detroit Pistons and got banned from the NBA because of his point shooter. That'll do it. They'll get right in and he was imprisoned. He was imprisoned at this time and he they, he, there was no question that Connie Hawkins, Roger Brown were seeing Jack Molina's driving around in his convertible. Everybody saw them in the summertime and Connie Hawkins is the first to admit that Jack Molina's, we give him money from time to time pocket money. He did borrow some money from Jack Molina's. When he he got his advance on his student loan scholarship money and went home is like a big spender and spent it all, and then realized, oh my God, what have I done and needed to borrow? I think it was two hundred dollars from Molina's. Paid them back, went back to school, his brother repaid the loan for him. So the idea of Connie Hawkins shaving points. He hadn't played a game yet. He hadn't played a college game, then he'd never lost a high school to high school game. So. How on earth could he have shave points? So the star and other star who's since passed? I'm sorry to say rods. Littman, his attorney, I thought was unbelievable. It was unbelievable, and she has since passed by the way Connie Hawkins systems pass. We were fortunate enough to have his interview in this book as well. But my favorite part of this whole Connie Hawkins thing was when this this attorney Roz Litmanen in her husband decided to try to exonerate Hawkins one night. Her husband came home and he said, well, we're going to interview Jack Molina's tonight. She said, oh, so we're going to prison. He said, no, no, we're, we're going to restaurants, he's well. He's in prison. So I show up at this restaurant there waiting for this Jacqueline Lee is he comes in, he's not in prison garb. He's got a girl on his arm and two guards from the prison standing there, watching them eat dinner with Roslin and her husband, and then they took them back to prison after the interview was over. And in that interview Molina's said, you know, I never ask Connie Hawkins to shave points. I never asked him to do any of that. It's this nightmare kind of situation that we sort of associate with. Documentaries about, you know, injustice in the in in the legal system and and cops sort of sweating, sweating out, sweating, confessions out of people sort of kids..

"I mean and Spencer Haywood Spencer Haywood was one of those. Larry Brown, hey, woods, Spencer Haywood stories about Adolph Rupp are not going to win him any friends in Kentucky. Well, it's a lot of stories about rate off Adolph Rupp probably met revere it off rope anymore. Do they still have the after they have the coordinator for him still rather arena that should probably not be. So that brings us back to John. This is going to be an unpopular in Kentucky this that'll bring us back to John mcclendon. So Adolf rob, there was plenty of evidence that he was a racist. I mean, there was he was, you know, they were. Pete was quoted calling at. Of the Texas western games. Don't let these coons beat you all sorts of things. And one of the things that I found fascinating was a guy named Ben job who had played for mcclendon went to visit him and he walked into mclennan's office and the there was a white guy and McLennan with his back to mcclendon said, hey, I'm busy. Come back in a little while. And so Ben, Joe Wade, and our came back and whoever the white dude was was gone bend. Jobs said, who was that? McLennan said, now you can never speak of this to anyone that was Adolph Rupp that was Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp. I was helping them out with some basketball strategy, but he doesn't want anyone to know that an African American coach was helping him. Now, this is a guy who was a known racist yet. He's he's going to McLennan for help. So two things on the race topic and just sort of bringing back maybe disenfranchised or or not appropriate, remembered people. The name Cleo hill is one of these footnotes inside any hardcore basketball fans brain. If. That right? And he played one season in the NBA. He was a star at Winston, Salem state under big house Gaines and you have Billy Packer among others quoted as saying, you know, I walked into that arena. Billy Packer was a Wake Forest and I walked into that arena. 'cause I need to see this kid play, and I thought, holy. This guy's better than anybody in the ACC right now just and there's no professional resume to speak of. Well, that's because he was blackballed by his own teammates. He's he gets to the hawks, right? Right. And the story goes now, this is the era where Bill Russell and others are speaking of about quotas and how we can I an Oscar players on the team and all of this. And even you have some of Wiltz white teammates in the book. One of them saying, I, I knew I was on the team. Yeah, Joel dot com. He didn't just of why he left. He didn't spot when they win this white kilter mentally, hey, and he's like, no, I'm not clear hill. I would watch your documentary just on clue. I believe he was featured in black magic was featured black magic like, and we should mention by the way that this book is only made possible because of Dan choruses documentary. This was Dan Clark is baby for our book was born from his wonderful documentary. We truly important to say that. Yeah. I mean without without that stash of interviews, this incredible sort of one LA show shine that that that that at at the the beginning. because saying a million more time. So we will. About to go on like a year long awards torso, it's going to be Danquah, but Cleo hill goes to the hawks in the sixties is clearly the best player on the team and the other players the so the story goes are like, we don't want this. This black dude can't be the best player a team. Let's get him outta here. Well, more importantly, it was the owners in the front office that were saying that because they said, if if I think the way they said was, if a negro is the leading score in our team, we won't get any fans credible, and he gets a decent amount of space in the book, and.

"Yeah it's going back to the artificial intelligence conversation we were having earlier the fact that net flicks can't find the right movie for me yet the fact that i have to scroll that long to find something shows we've got at least a couple of weeks until the apocalypse right because if they can't figure that out yet i mean maybe it's an unsolvable equation you know what that's a really good thing there's something next net flicks should work on because all my family has their own little net flicks icon rafe watches his cheyenne watch her mom dad so it knows it should it's worth twice the twice the amount of money if it can say i got a movie all of you will gonna like this this now instead their algorithm is such that you know hey you just watch lost in space maybe you'll like debbie does dallas same thing one thing in there one thing in there that you're just like i watched something like old industrial you know education films from the nineteen fifties i was trying to get something for something that i was writing and i saw this and i it was like old commercials from the nineteen seventies and i'm like okay and it's all it is just like ninety minutes of commercials back to back and so i just now because you watch commercials of the seventies i've got this whole thing that never ever no no i didn't like that homework you're much more industrious than i am in that i have only one sided under my name and you know the kids site in ruins so now like the my recommendations is it's either movies for four year olds or hitler documentaries it's the only two things so which one which one do you end up watching.
