"rafael devers" Discussed on The Rich Eisen Show

"And if you're a giant being on a team that's got a ton of money to spend and is an hour and a half from the small town you grew up in. And I'm a Mariner. You can look at all these different places. And in the end, I really do wonder money is going to be the tiebreaker because money can not value, right? Money says this is how much we value you. We can say it. All we want with our words, but we're going to show you instead of tell you. Okay. So it's going to come down to who pays them the most is what you're saying or that you general sense. I don't know if it's going to come down to that because I think there's certainly scenarios rich in which he finds comfort in a place or with a theme that may not be willing to pay him the most. But I think that to discount money is being hit an enormous factor here would just be ignoring human nature and ignoring the idea of achievements and wanting people to recognize that achievement in as many ways as they can, including the most tangible, which is how am I going to compensate you for your achievement? So what do you think the timeline is on this once the World Series is over? Or has it started the Yankees already reached out to him or the Yankees are still trying to figure out who's doing the reaching out? What do you got? To be honest, I don't have a I don't have a great sense on the timeline at this point. I look in the past at big three agencies. I look at Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. They didn't sign till February. I look at Corey Seager. He signed in November. The market has not established itself at this point yet. I could see him wanting to get something done quickly because Aaron judge's a very process oriented guy and somebody who's pretty meticulous in his routine and wanting to get that established earlier rather than later is always a good thing. But there's also a scenario in which the market is not what he's looking for and he runs the risk and is willing to absorb the risk of letting it play out in hopes of getting what he thinks is right and fair. So what are your thoughts on the market? Matt's Red Sox Dodgers. Will they be involved, do you think? In this? I think I don't know that the mets are going to be involved. That's not clear at this point. I do think the Dodgers will be involved. And I think a lot of the Red Sox depends on what happens with Rafael Devers. Because I don't see them extending Rafael beverage and signing Aaron judge. So if a Devers contract comes through, then I think they're probably out of the running for judge, but if one doesn't, then they'd be foolish not to at least inquire and see if they can tell them I'm going to Boston because you want to talk about a coup. Oh my goodness. Can you imagine Aaron judge with a Red Sox? Well, you would be derelict of duty if you represent Aaron judge and don't get the Red Sox involved and in the most public manner possible. I mean, that would be honestly, what is that straight out of the Scott Boris playbook? Put it all together, it's going to be a monster story in baseball, certainly because it involves judge the Yankees. And then also Jeff passing here on the rich eisen show, part of the reason why I wanted to talk judge with you is not only your remarkable piece with ESPN+ ESPN dot com and so much more is the fact that the Yankees got swept by the American League champion Houston Astros. And one would think one would think that in order for the Yankees to finally get past the team that Bob Costas called the Yankees daddy. I mean, even Costas is getting in on that sort of language, right? You'd have to have judge there. You'd have to. My sense is, how does the ALCS inform judge and the Yankees and how they can put together a team to get past Houston for a change? You think? You know, this is where it gets kind of problematic for the accidents, right? They have not shown a willingness to go payroll wise where they have gone in the past into the extremely high 200s. And. Three years ago, I would have bet every dollar I had that if it seemed was going to exceed $300 million, it was going to be the Yankees or the Dodgers and the mets. So not only are the Yankees being out spent these days. They're being outspent by the other team in their city. So when you look at what their payroll commitments are for the future, it's around $200 million for next year. And boy oh boy. $200 million, you add another 40 for judge and then you got to add a whole lot more on top of that because the team you put together, frankly, just isn't good enough. Not good enough to beat the Astros, you can make an argument that it might not have been good enough to beat the Mariners. Which is a wild thing to say, but I was talking to the plants of colors after the Astros won the ALCS in a pretty stunning sweep again. Well, no, it's not stunning. Convincing, sweep against the Yankees and he was talking about how he thought nobody else would have eaten Seattle. And maybe that's maybe that's just the ASTRO's way of propping themselves up. But I think in a series between Seattle and the Yankees, it certainly is not going definitively in the Yankees favor. Cleveland Cleveland took them to 5 games and I think Seattle was a markedly better team, especially for the playoffs than Cleveland. You know, I could you just named many teams, all of them who put the ball and play more than the Yankees. I mean, they are like that proverbial basketball team that shoots threes to win. That sure, they can win a lot, and they can blow you out, and they can come from behind. But if the shots aren't dropping, they lose. And that's about it for the Yankees. If the ball's not leaving the yard, they lose period end of story, and when you go against teams like the Astros or guardians or if they did have to face the Mariners, they are some good pictures. Everybody comes out throwing a hundred out of the pen now. They'll strike out. They'll strike you out. That's it. In this day and age. Yeah. I mean, listen, let's not discount that the Yankees this year lost Michael king lost Chad green, lost Scott after those are three really good bullpen arms and that their bullpen was as thin as it was in the playoffs in large part due to those injuries that they didn't have DJ le mayhew that they didn't have Andrew benintendi. Two guys who would have been part of that everyday lineup and strengthened it.

"It just doesn't, it doesn't resonate. It doesn't work. It becomes a pox on everybody's house. You know? Certainly you make 17 million. Already. I had ever amazing. According to bob nightingale, 20 minutes ago, the Nats have begun fielding preliminary offers for Juan Soto. 17s in the mix. Seattle. Oh, they have the names? They have the teams, yeah. Yankees? One of them? Yankees, Dodgers, Dodgers, Red Sox? No. I don't want to give up the young guys. You said Seattle's in, huh? Seattle. Okay. San Diego? Slam Diego. San Francisco Giants, Saint Louis Cardinals, and the New York metropolitan. Sandy alderson is the wags. Wags. They're ready. Without the pole. I don't think he parties like wax. Okay. 7 teams in the mix. All right, here we go. Three NL west. Wow. Here we go. So one of those teams is going to be the ones winding up with Juan Soto in two weeks. They're so maybe, you know? Wow. Price if the price is right? Red Sox aren't and you got a problem with that. What do we give up? I don't think we have the only thing we have enough to get to get them. So that you've got to be in it to win it. I would much rather resign. Xander and Raphael Devers. Did you see the story out of The Boston Globe? No, you had mentioned this. What happened? It made me upset. Well, I mean, Devers confirmed it, that the initial conversations between the two sides, the Red Sox offered a comp. For him. In their estimation, and it was Matt Olson. And I read that he's a terrific player. He is a good player. He said you mean? The guy made Olson. Yeah. What, a $180 million contract that the braves bestowed upon him after they parted ways or they stopped negotiating with Freddie Freeman or vice versa. I don't want to get sued. I want to get in the middle of all that. For one 68. One 68. Come on now. That's exactly right. If I'm Rafael Devers, I'm like, look, he is a very good baseball player. And his market value is, I mean, you know, it's a heck of a contract, but that is way low, way lower than what I'm thinking about. And the whole idea, though, is that if Devers hits free agency, the industry sense is that his contract would begin with a two. Right. Like 200 million in change. Yeah, like 7 for 200. So maybe not the three that he's looking for, but it would definitely start with a two, not the one that Matt Olson's contract starts with. And I read that and I'm like, uh oh. There's only 25. I mean, and but the sense is that he won't finish most of his contract playing third. That's why they're competent with Matt Olson. DH first. Yeah. Like he'd take a more poppy rolling things. Probably smarter, long-term. Which is why they were setting his value at that. Careful, you not allowed a curse. I know. Don't give me this Red Sox ownership is just so frustrating. So so many levels. They may get it done yet. With Devers, still time. May I guess. But I read that. Oh man, I don't want to either one to go. Two or three, but I want to get in on Soto, no? I guess not. If you're not paying bets that money and you're competent, then I guess they have a philosophy that they will pay, but they're not going to go on these companies, these 7 ten, 12 years old contracts. Yeah, they're not going to go three, four, 500 million. They're not in that game. They prove that with bets? Yeah, they're not in the 12 year, 350. They're not in that game. The Red Sox are not in that game. Which thinks, because they have lots and lots of money. Is that your professional sense? Like lots of it. They own Liverpool, the soccer club. Like, what are we doing? I know that. Among other others. They just bought the penguins. Like, what is happening? Do you have some baseball music for me? Do you have to the other day? Oh no, I can't play that. You couldn't play that DNA. I could flag. I got in trouble. You got flagged. I got in trouble. Okay. All right. You've got with the second half of the season beginning. So we have some what's more likely baseball. Baseball, what's more likely? For the rest of the world. All right, let's hit it. We'll do that. And then we'll get to George kittle. Have a nice fun conversation with George. Go for it. All right, let's start with hold on. We got a hold. We got a whole lot. More likely. Never say never, but never.

I love the day games and I love the 10 p.m. games because there's only like a handful of people watch and you're all on Twitter. It feels like you're watching together. There's always one that goes 14 innings, and you pride yourself on staying up the whole time. 7 o'clock starts to do it for me. That's the one. I don't know. You're like a 12 year old talking baseball. That's why I'm having you on, Alex. I sports like a 12 year old. That's just the reality of it. I still have my homework. "During the year. I think you got to keep him for the extent of this year. Bogart's maybe. If they're struggling? No, no, no, no. I meant bogarts. Oh, sorry. You cut out for a second year. Sorry, no, no, no, no, I meant. Don't blame your crappy headphones on the quality of your Internet. Okay. No, I met Bogart. I think with the Red Sox to decide to move on from Xander Bogart sooner than later. I think they could under the right scenario. I think the right scenario is the team is struggling. I think for them to trade boulevards this year. Trevor story has to be playing well. Because we know how PR conscious they are, the spin has to be there that. Well, we have. We can move on because we have our next short stop, right? If Trevor's story still hit like a buck 80, which I don't think he will be comes July. But let's say he is, they won't do it, because they don't have the guy. And then I don't know, they'll figure it out in the off season, but I think there is a situation that happens. I do think that will be better than that. I think there will be at least in contention come the deadline and they won't move bogarts that they have a chance to win it because you got to capitalize on the team you have right now with this window, especially since you could lose Bogart's endeavors. But it wouldn't be the craziest thing that's happened. Or you know what? Let me take that back. Okay. Even if they aren't contention, even if they aren't content, if they really need something, they move no more when they were in contention. Yeah. And now that's now multiple GMs ago and decades ago, but the other thing I would say about that is nomar was starting to lose value very quickly. Very quickly. And I think they saw that. Xander bogarts is not losing value. I think he's still a premier top 5 shortstop at baseball. Very much so. I mean, he doesn't have the range of some other shortstops. He's not Correa by any stretch. But he's still a very exceptional talent in this game. And I think they would like to hold on to them, but if the right situation came along and they were in need of something and they felt like they could restock their bullpen or they could restock another part of their lineup that was really failing, perhaps a first baseman, perhaps an outfielder who knows. But if they felt like or the at a starting picture, obviously. If they felt like they could do that and it made sense to them, I think they consider it. I'm with you though. I think it would be hard for them to move on from Xander bogarts in the middle of a season. Yeah, so it's the old Belichick thing, right? Move on a year too early versus a year too late. They traded no more when he was 30 over to 29. And I know you said like nomar maybe was losing value. He was hitting three 21 when they traded him. And I don't remember this as analytically because I was ten, but he was hitting three 21. He was slugging 500. He had, he didn't have a lot of home runs, but he had a lot of extra space sets..

"Think the question is, does he want to hit free agency again or does he want to correct in different places? Some players feel differently about that. He may want ten you may want 12 years. He may say I don't want to, I want to be locked up. I want to be good forever. Or he may say, you know what? I'd like to add freedom to see again in my early 30s and I don't want the long-term deal. So and I do either way, whichever way you keep them here for a long period of time, Anthony Rendon is currently the highest paid third baseman in baseball. He's making $36 million. That's a lot though. This guy's going to be an MVP candidate ever. If he stays healthy, I agree. And if that's the case, then, and a few of the Red Sox and you want to save some on the AAV, the average annual value of that contract, I think you're going to have to give him a long, long-term deal. And see if Devers will bite on it. Right. The other thing is Rendon. I'm looking to see when he's signed this deal. I think it was somewhat recently, yeah. So he signed that deal. It was 7 years, $245 million. He signed that at age 30. Boy, that's a lot of doubt. Endeavors is 25. Devers is going to get more than that. I think you're going to be a record breaking contract. It's going to be ten years. Ten years, 300 million is probably very close to the ballpark that diversity is going to be looking for. I would give them 30 million a year and what's Rendon getting? 36. So 30 million a year is actually underpaid. It might be more like ten, three 50. $30 million a year with time with Machado. He'd be the third highest paid third baseman. I'm not saying he's Pablo Sandoval, but I think in the back of the Red Sox mine, they privately would tell you if there's one concern about Rafael Devers, it's his weight, it's his conditioning, right? I mean, are we on the same page there, Alex? Yeah, well, so hang on. So we are. I'm digging in. So here's the cop, because I was going to say how many guys with the way teams manipulate service time. How many guys really become free agents at 25? Manny Machado at 26, ten years, 300 million. Yep..

"We're talking contracts. You know what that means, Alex. We got to bring up the number one story in Red Sox land over the weekend, June Lee reported this for ESPN dot com. Right around opening day actually right on opening day. Last week, and that was the fact that apparently Xander Bogart's not pleased with the Red Sox and he is looking for elite shortstop money and the Red Sox priority is Rafael Devers. None of that surprises me. Not anything that I just uttered in that sentence surprises me. You. No, no. Look, I think that they should try to bring back both if you have to pick one. It's diverse. It's obvious. Yes, I don't think that's any question. So I think Trevor story signing was the writing on the wall. Again, it would have been cool to have all three. You add casses to that. You might get the best offensive infield and baseball for four or 5 years, whatever it may be. We talked about this last time I was on. I think they should be able to sign both. There's no other big contracts on the horizon. The cassus might be the next one. And at that point, Bogart still might be over. But if they have to prioritize one, it's never. That being said, they have to sign Raphael Devers. If they're going to let zander Bogart walk, you can't lose both. No. And Rafael Devers is off to the kind of start that Red Sox fans would like to see one home run. He's got two doubles, 5 hits overall. In 16 at bats, he's hitting three 13. His OPS is 9 78 through four games, whatever that means. But I don't think there's going to be any slowing down. One thing I did notice, and we saw it on Monday again, Raphael Devers has some range now, especially to his left. And that play he made in the middle part of the game on Monday was very, very impressive. And if he can make those plays, then absolutely, he gets his wish of wanting.

"Great. We'll see what Joey Gallo is. So I think that they kind of remind me of the Red Sox where the potential is there. It's just, I don't know if they can do it consistently enough. The scary thing for me is if they are going to win, they're going to win hitting the baseball, right? Because where those guys are on Gallo, Rizzo. Yeah, go on. They can get stand judge. Thank you, dawn. The Jays, obviously, they can hit the crap out of the ball too. The Red Sox are designed to win games 11 to 8. And in a division full of teams that are also trying to win shootouts, I can get a little rough and the Red Sox probably have the worst bullpen of the three teams. That is the one thing I'd say the Yankees have definitively over the Red Sox. They have a good question. And that was the irony of Sunday Night is the Red Sox bullpen outperformed the Yankee bullpen. Not by a lot, but enough to make a difference. By the way, it sounds like Aaron judge they're not going to extend them anytime soon, and he's going to hit free agency. You know, why would they? Teams don't extend good players in Major League Baseball. Apparently, except the pirates out of nowhere cabri and Hayes, the first time ever spending money. I love that deal. Smart deal by Pittsburgh. Good for the fans to actually get to see a player hit the age 30 in their city. When's the last time that happened? Joey Votto, Cincinnati. I was saying in Pittsburgh. Oh, in Pittsburgh, a boy, go back to the old, the lumber company days. You have to go back that far. I can't remember last time. Even when even in Barry Bonds and Bobby bonilla days, they didn't extend their players, obviously that's why Barry Bonds left for the Giants..

"Talk about deek, man, right? I've deep minced numbers here. You go back to the last few years. Last year, three 8 6 ERA in Oakland, the year before that, O four two very good, although only in 21 innings. Before that, four 6 5 four 7 three two 5 three three 44 one, he comes and goes. He comes and goes. You don't necessarily know what you're getting with him. And they found pitchers in their mid to late 30s before and turned them into studs. We all remember Koji. That's kind of a one in a million. I don't know that DeepMind's going to be Koji, but at the same time, they've done this before. We just don't know. And that's what makes it so scary. All right, Garrett whitlock. You referenced it locking him up for four year extension. This year is making $720,000. After this year, four years, $18.75 million to me, that's a steal. And I give all the credit in the world to VP of baseball operations, baseball president, home bloom. 1.2 million next year, 3.5, the next 5.5 in 2024 and the final year of the deal 2025, 7 and a half $1 million. Don't you think that's a steal? It really is. I mean, for a top end pitcher and again, all the more reason you got to put this guy in starting rotation. That money for a top end starter is unbelievable. We don't know that he's a top end starter yet. He's 26. But he has the potential to be. He has the potential to be. I think you have a big difference. I think you have to at least find out. I think you have to at least find out. But yeah, no, it's I'm sorry. Not to dig back in my own narrative. You're right. Whatever he ends up doing. Even if he's a closer, what did Barnes extension go for last year? That was what, 12 per, I think of it here and just give me one minute. Keep talking. Matt Barnes, I got it. It was two years, $18.75 million for this year and next year with an opt out 24. Yeah, I did so much. I did all the research I need to for the show clearly. Yeah, you look at that money. It Barton's was obviously an all star closer last year when he signed that extension. He fell apart in the second half, but the ink was already dry at that point. Whitlock last year was an all star caliber pitcher. He didn't get in, but I mean, we need a one something ERA. He's strikeout ratio was enormous. To compare those two deals, it's an absolute runaway steal for the Red Sox. I'm surprised whitlock signed.

"Everybody, it is drags Mike petrolia back with you for another episode of Red Sox beat on the CL and S media network. My old friend, Alex barth, from 98 5, the sports hub is joining us once again to talk Red Sox. Finally, the start of the 2022 season. Of course, follow Alex on Twitter at real Alex barth all one word. Lo and behold, we have a season to talk about its underway, the Red Sox dropped two of three in New York to the Yankees. They dropped that kind of ugly, depressing game to watch on Monday in Detroit after The Rain delay before maybe 500, a thousand people Red Sox lose that. In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Tiger scored twice, Red Sox dropped that contest by a score of three to one. They are one in three on the season. Of course, they started 2021. Season in which they won 92 games losing three games to the Baltimore Orioles, so let's not panic yet. I'm not saying we're going to do that. But we are going to talk about some of the pluses and some of the minuses in the first four games of this 2022 campaign. And first of all, Alex, I want to get your impression on why you think the bats have started in a bit of a slump. I mean, it feels like that's always the case, right? And I don't know, I'd like to say oh, is it shorter spring training? And that's throwing guys timing off, but you see it around the league that teams are hitting, right? So I don't think it's not like it's the, oh, well, nobody's hitting so whatever it's just guys got to ramp up into it. It feels like it's hit the Red Sox the worst I saw the stat last night. I believe it's they're hitting one 74 as a team, which ranks 29 out of 30 teams. So it's an anomaly. Okay. Let me jump in there. The bigger concern. When you rattle off a stat like that, that, to me, is pretty arbitrary. They started two for 21 with runners in scoring position. That is more alarming to me than the overall. I hadn't seen that, but you're right. When you add that context, I think that's a more important number to look at. It's tough to tell you, you know, they haven't had Trevor story in the line of who's supposed to be one of their bigger bats, but he started, I don't think he has a hit yet, right before he got sick, he's walking. I can double check real quick. But continue talking, and I'll get back to you on that. It's just, I don't know if it's the shorter camp, I don't know if it's they're playing in the cold. I don't know if it's here doing all these weird things with the lineup like that lineup he had yesterday. It's Travis Shaw. It's 'cause you're not expecting to be in the starting lineup, right? I think part of that Alex is to get.

"I think a lot of people, at least around Boston, were surprised about the kind of deal that Boston got from because I think a lot more people expected to get more money on an average annual value basis. There's the contracts that you want to situation around Rafael Devers and how Boston I think in my opinion is probably going to prioritize resigning him just because of his agent's position and the quality of his bet. And then the kind of X Factor looming in the background of all this kind of middle infield situation for Boston is Marcel Meyer, who was the top draft pick for the Red Sox last year. And it came out of high school, but is given the kind of the player development trajectories that we've seen in baseball with the course of the last 5 years, especially we've seen guys coming up early and earlier. And so I think that this is we're in a little bit of a transition period where Boston, I think, has an opportunity to really have a strong infield this year offensively because of the value that they have at the shortstop position. But this might be a one year window to have an infield with the bad quality of Trevor stories Andrew bogarts and Rafael Devers amending that side of the infield. I love from the Red Sox management perspective, the idea that you have a safety net built in, if Xander does opt out, or if he stays, you know, I do think story is going to be their shortstop in 2023. One way or the other. Because as you said, Xander winds up staying, perhaps he's going to wind up moving to a different spot. We'll see a lot of that will depend on how they view Devers. Here's the other part June that I really think is great about this. From what I understand, you know, story had an opportunity to go back to Colorado. He had a chance to go to the twins who were improved, but we don't think of them as being in the big market, you know, Dodge your Red Sox Yankee realm. He absolutely prioritized winning. He's burning to win after all those years in Colorado. And just in my time at covering baseball, I feel that's important, even with really good teams, you know, guys who've been at playoffs every year, Xander has lived in the postseason, you know, JD Martinez has lived in the postseason. I think it's great to have someone coming in who's got that burning desire to win because I think that rubs off on other players. You buy that? Yeah, I do buy that because I think in a market like Boston when there is so much pressure to win, just on a night tonight basis. If story struggles at the beginning, he's going to be able to handle that pressure because he understands that coming to Boston means that you are trying to win right now. And if you're getting pressure from the fans, when you are struggling and you have the mindset that you are trying to win with this kind of burning desire, I think that getting negative feedback from fans could almost be seen as a positive because it means that everyone is invested in the same way. And so I do agree with you that that is something that is a major positive for this team. And I think it's really interesting in how you mentioned that story is kind of the safety net. I think bloom is not necessarily taking the approach that he took in Tampa Bay in terms of spreading out or not paying guys an trading guys because I think just because you have the financial back of John Henry, there's just much more financial flexibility. What I do think is happening is that he's trying to spread the wealth out across a lot of different positions to make sure that every single position is kind of above the replacement level, which is what has been done in Tampa Bay. But I think when you have a little bit more money, the level of the level you have above replacement level is a little bit higher in Boston than you can have in a place like Tampa Bay where they're trying to cut costs at all times. Two more topics we get about two minutes left. I want to ask you how you felt about the twin strategy and signing Carlos Correa. We talked in the podcast today yesterday about how, from their perspective, yeah, they're trying to win, but whether or not they're actually in contention or not, there's a lot of logic behind after you have Corey under contract. Knowing can opt out the end of the year, a flipping in midseason for talent that's more major league ready, you know, in order to sign Correa, they had to give a draft pick compensation, but if you trade them in mid season, you can get guys who are closer to the big leagues. So you're essentially from the twins perspective, you're buying prospects with the money you're investing Correa this year. I love that strategy. And I gotta be honest, you know, I wonder why some of the other teams, including the Astros didn't do it. Yeah, I think this is just incredibly creative team building given the construct of free agency today. Because Correa, I think, is in a position where, you know, he maybe didn't necessarily get the huge money deal that he was expecting just given the flood of really talented short stops on the market, the soft season. So he can kind of put himself in a position to go back out in the market after this season if he wants to. And the twins are kind of in this in between rebuilding position where they have some stuff there that.

"You know around if you want to count the welker games around. So i'm happy with that and you know we weren't. We didn't all predict that there are one and done so. I still think for all three of us. It is a success based on our prediction. I'm i'm happy with that. I'm happy to go down with that for sure. I mean considering that i can. I predicted a world series matchup with two teams. That didn't even qualify. I i i don't have a ton to say but You know what i like. The thing is the blue jays didn't end up making the playoffs. And that's obviously unfortunate but at least it's not because they were a bad team or because they collapsed because in order. They say they had made the playoffs. It would have been probably even better than the twenty fifth team all the the things that went right at once. Basically to get them in so i'm a little okay with it. And considering they won their last game like we knew they had to sweep baltimore they did they. They won twelve to four Easily like if aaron judge didn't hit that line drive or if rafael devers didn't hit that home run or or alex purdue go didn't hit that double or whatever bluejays would have probably been in a tiebreaker. That's all. I really have to say you hope next season things are different and even if the playoffs are the same which probably throw my computer if that's the case but even if they are i still think the team will make the playoffs either wildcard or maybe even the division. I know one thing that i noticed a lot in this episode is we all basically predicted the raise. We're gonna fall off and reasonable to sort of predict that when you lose blake snell. It definitely is something that i think we considered but a lot of us really praised the yankees and i mean good on them. They did they did finish with ninety. Two wins eight games back of of the raise. But i don't think any of us really expected this to happen and even throughout the season it was all red. Sox had a easy season. They're gonna fall off and it's it's basically bluejays either taking place or they take first place but i think this proves that the al east is probably the best division in baseball with the exception of maybe the nfl less with the dodgers and the giants having that great run that they had. But it's gonna be tough. I think next season it's gonna. It's likely to almost certain that they make it. But when you look at this season it. It i can't even really call it a disappointment just considering all the things that had to go right and that did go right and you talk about all of that. One thing didn't happen well. All we needed was not a one. Nothing loss from the tampa bay rays louise would have had their shot to punch ticket to the playoffs. But you know what it's i guess..

"Don't see why the nationals would not move forward without him. However you've got strasbourg sign long-term you're going to have to give soto a zillion will deserve in today's day and age. You wanna bring max scherzer back somehow next year. So there's only so much money to go around but trae turner's a better player than people think he is and among all these great shortstops coming up for free agency and he's not one of them yet because he's arbitration eligible next run here that that guy's really really good okay. I'm glad you feel that way. Our stick with the nats. And i will say what i've said to my son a number of times in the last few days. The clinical definition of insanity is to keep repeating the same thing over and over and think the result will be different davey martinez continues to trot out. Brad hand to save games who continues to blow saved games. He's awful. He's just awful are the does anybody want him and with the nets. Get rid of him. Yes my guess. Is brad hand daniel hudson. Who's good brad. Hand hasn't been good lately. Both we'll move. This is the time of year. Tony where relievers go to championship caliber teams and they make a difference. Given how important bullpens are to every game these days. Daniel hudson would really help a contender brad. Hand as a left-hander could really help somebody but probably not as the closer at least not the way he has pitched lately. I i think the nats are unloading or moving people. It will be those two guys. I as opposed to and turner and there will be people in line to get daniel hudson and there were people. There will be people who want brad hand okay. I'll get outta here on this and we'll go national with joe madden who everybody loves. Because he's a wreck on tour smart guy Thinks that there's no doubt that shohei otani is the mvp in the american league. No doubt and if you vote for somebody else you'd be an idiot. I think you could vote for blair vlad guerrero junior. I mean he could win the triple crown and the other part is Somebody on the red sox is someone used somebody in the last third of the season but just is dynamic on a on a team that is in the playoffs. The angels are not even in the playoffs at the moment. I could see giving it to them. But i'm wondering how you feel about what madden said with otani. Well of course. He's going to say that about his own guys. Yes it's been the most incredible season really that any of us has ever seen given that he got to thirty five. It got to a hundred strikeouts as a pitcher with thirty five home runs. The most runs before that of any pitcher got to one hundred strikeouts was nine. He hit us thirty six last night so he has four times many homers as any pitcher who's ever struck out one hundred batters in the season. That's how good shohei otani has been and yet if Black guerrero wins the triple crown and somehow toronto makes playoffs. How can you vote against him. I i don't think he's gonna win. Even if he wins the triple crown ted williams and forty two and forty seven one the triple crown and didn't win the mvp. Gary won the triple crown and thirty four and did when the vpn joe Chuck klein in nineteen thirty three. None of that matters today. Here's the different sony. It's not the mvp anymore for me. We are voting on this as the player of the year. It's no longer about. Did you help your team win and go to the playoffs. That is a secondary element. Now it's still a primary element for old guys like me. I wanna see you take your team to the playoffs. And you're right zander. bogart's rafael devers has an amazing finish here and the red sox win the division. They're they're going to get a lot of support for mvp and they should. But i'm telling you again shohei ohtani. This moment is the mvp and should be the mvp but that could change. I'll go way back on this. You'll remember soil versus of the twins had a great year. He was voted. Mvp twins finish like eighty games out. And you say wait. How valuable could he be. You know i mean just say most outstanding player. If you wanna make it that way right i mean that's it's semantical but it's a legitimate thing to say right right well. Andre dawson won the mvp on a sub five hundred. Eighteen cal ripken but things have changed in the voting process. And the way we look at things. And i'm okay with change but if i'm voting i'm gonna i'm still going to take a look at how many truly meaningful game that you play and how much you have to do with your team. Winning those are difficult questions today. But i still ask them. Thank you tim talk soon. Appreciated have fun doing the game tonight. Okay tony thank you tim. But do now tell me that isn't a tremendous need, a, what's your name that do bad? Do his sons cuz of his hair? No. Oh, does that sound like Fred Flintstone named him? You know, yabba-dabba-doo wage. Oh, yeah. I mean, it isn't that a tremendous name on the back of your uniform? Oh yeah, bad do. So I'm really rooting for the guy. Even though he's a tiger and the Tigers blow. That's a baseball name. I've killed by dog. Yep. Sounds like like something you say after a sneeze Zimbabwe. Donna Donna by he's oh goodness. Yeah. Yeah. Canadian good. Moring Connery and know that. That's your side of the family package. They told us anywhere from gonorrhea. All right. So where were we? Oh yeah. Well we're on the subject of baseball and I don't usually talk about baseball these days cuz I've lost my luster for the game and the last five years although I'm recovering from, I'm getting some of it back watching this year's Red Sox team because they are fun. The one thing, I don't know, all the players much based on over every place where he's born, how old he is, what are you when you hit last year? I don't do that anymore. I got too much clutter. So what I do now is I pick up? Oh this guy I like that guy. Rafael Devers probably not like that verse. You gotta love that kid. Devers Bogart's, he plays with a how do you say in French? Schwa de vivre. Is that the right term you play with a Panache. He plays with a certain Panache. Ed Panache was a shortstop from his minor league. It's just this year's Red Sox. Team should be likeable and they come from behind, you know, more often than Ron Jeremy. So they're really, really fun to watch and I'm, I'm not falling in love with him. I haven't been to a game since June 2016. Well, I'll write, and it's the first time that's ever happened. So we got kicked out of a sweet and Game 6 2013. Yeah. Who's responsible for that, Graham? Yes sir. What an asshole? He was. I didn't know he was I was just a joke that only pussy. Anyway, don't get me started. On Kevin grabbed. Yeah. He kicked him out of the This luxury suites so that would be room for some fat-ass clients. Will you guys being Rowdy know? It was three of us. It was myself my key and home. So can you guess the third person who still works at the station? Oh my God, I forgot. Now I was okay with him kicking mud out of there cuz I'm old stories, aren't they? Kooky know you guys notice that. It's just Smokey outside. Yes. Last week I came here just hanging around last. We came up with a solution for for the, the wildfires, in the west coast. Yeah. Did anyone do anything about it? Did they install one sprinkler system. One? No, they did not. Yet the show, is the, show isn't big at the White House. I don't know if he's noticing it should. Damn. Well be, you know, I make better decisions than Biden? Biden says, I want chocolate chip. Come on, man. So the smoke from a distance Distant Fire, who's the Sanford? Townsend band. Yes. Can you Google that real quick? What am I Google? Smoke From a Distant Fire. It's a hit from the 70s. A good one, too. And not smoke is, is is seeping into our lives. Its outside you go outside yet. It's like what it's hazy or coughing. We are now subject to. Yeah, that's the one right there. Smoke from a distant. Now, we have to bring that. Are that they caused. That's a commercial, right? Yeah, that happened. Yeah. Everything has a commercial attached to it. Now I pulled out a piece of toilet paper. Had an ad on it. Used to be just a smash. Now, it's on toilet paper. Ladies and gentlemen, wlob Portland, Maine your shit hole radio station presents the Sanford Townsend band as for the 1978 es is called Smoke From a Distant Fire. You let me Yeah, okay. Yeah, still got it. My key can I talk up an intro? That was awesome. I was, oh yeah, the smoke. So now they're causing us to, you know, we talked about pollution emissions and global warming hand smoke, all these things, that pollute the environment, you know, and what your carbon footprint, what is Oregon's? And carbon footprint now when they they half the States been burning and blowing our way? What are we breathing? We're breathing Chinese are right now cuz of them cuz they don't know how to put it a goddamn sprinkler system that would you should run for office. Mike you come? I should just run. Damn it. I mean I'm look I don't want to breathe it. I quit cigarettes for a reason cuz I didn't want to breathe that stuff. Now they're forcing us to And the sun's even mad. You see? A red, the sun, his lately? Yes pest. That's cuz Phoenix lost. Yeah, I don't know. Phoenix. I've hey, Milwaukee deserved. It was the last name. 1971. Lou Alcindor was before Easter Robertson before. He was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. That's the last fifty years, right? He sniffed. A couple of things to, I want to talk about, just throw them out there, you know, you guys can feel free to comment. Did I mentioned Jay Hardin construction out of Maynard and yesterday, you did made my deck looks so good. But the deck could I mentioned Mancini landscape design? Oh yes, you did. Most classic remade. My yard looks so good. Now I just wish my dog would stop pooping out there cuz then it would really look that dog and drop off some serious. Do keys out there just like his dad. You know, one time I was I was at walking through the quadrangle at Avon Old Farms prep school. Yeah. The one year I was there before I was expelled was a dead of winter. And there was a I was late late for class running. And I'm running and I see this pile of Duke. There was two.
