Now that was a splendid dog portray if the dog world say nancy. Congratulations for being from there. yes so nancy back kicked out of thank you so much into all the others that have introduced show this week. We really appreciate it and yeah. That's why we able to do this every single day of the finals. And we've got a few more to go. Today was a funny all day. We kind of previewed. It didn't we last night as much as the afternoon. Look like a much meaning to it. There was just not meaning. Those they were dead rubbers after all posted doubles and the singles and then the evening section. We always knew is going to be a knife edge type scenario you win. You guys drew you lose. You got home like a normal tournament. Let's start there showy because rough on the dow has beaten stefan pass in three sets. It wasn't like last year's when i didn't feel i thought it was. I mean i thought the dow played really. Well i've role. But i mean obviously there's no crime but last year they played a three center in and it was just epic. Wasn't it every every point felt like a a saga this. This didn't feel that that to me what to you. Know i felt like steph sits pass could have been prepared to die out there tonight and it still wouldn't have been enough He he cannot get close to the dull serve. I know there's the anomaly of the fact that he is beaten in one song clay Madrid in one thousand nine hundred. But let's just take that out of the equation and it's possible it's possible that sits has a bit of an adult problem And one that he's not getting any closer to solving think it's more than possible. I think he has a nidal problem. And i think he's a pretty big one. It's okay to have nato problem. Nidal is really really good. You know most of the world has had an adult problem for fifteen years. But he's not getting closer. It would sing and sits up past. Thinks he's got into dow problem doesn't am and he he's i it is he having seen his press conference. We'll talk about that in a minute. I think he will be going an obsessing for the next six weeks. Ah bat how to solve his dow problem matt's you you watched it what what jumped out at you from their match or yeah if i if you've got an adult problem. You've got a bit of a men's tennis problem haven't really because nadal is always going to be. There is a constant if you can't overcome the dull you're going to struggle to win the biggest tournaments i would. I would suggest certainly at the moment for the next year or two wall dolls exactly around anyway So yes short turn. That is going to be interesting to see whether sit to pass can overcome it. I think actually on one of those ones on clay. I think he's got so much more time to return the serve and he can step back and take some swings. Maybe that actually does help him against the door. But i completely agree with what you said. Catherine he just didn't didn't get near serve really for the whole match other than a fifteen minute spell which was weird and bizarre and suddenly he broke nidal twice twice in a row three times in a row. Maybe it was a very strange portion of the match. But i guess my main takeaway was kind of comparing to team the dull because that was the match we saw most recently and it felt like team has sustained threat against nadal whereas sits pass to me felt like he was relying on little moments and flashes of when his game was on and hoping that that would be enough to get him through. I didn't i didn't see a complete game plan really from him. And i think feeds into this wider thing of him being a bit confused about how to play a dollar and therefore it just always felt to me like the dole would win that match and in the end he won that third-set pretty pretty comfortably after after a shaky start

Fed Cup to be renamed Billie Jean King Cup

"The Fed Cup has been renamed the Billie Jean King Cup and there's those big plan fair announcements about this week and it's a lovely lovely thing I think it feels so so right there is I think one caveat David that you pointed out on twitter which. Which I very much agree with. How How how much does it really? Well first of all, I agree with you I think I'm ready that it's been renamed. That's The. Caveat was the if we are renaming the Fed, cut the Billie Jean King Cup. It feels even further away that we're GONNA end up having the the great mixed team competition or Fit Slam slammers I'd love it to be. A combination of the Fed Cup or the Billie Jean King Cup in Davis. Cup, that I think the sports so. Hugely needs that feels further away. But maybe maybe that's maybe that's not the case. Maybe the fact that her name is on it and she is may be involved more. We'll bring that closer together because she so much wants that is well, she's. The biggest campaign for. Men and women working together and and being on the same page and being on the same bill for goodness sake. and. Hopefully. That will come in the future I mean. There are those events just don't exist this year. So this is the news news, the renaming, and and that alone really really about just one article Chris Clare in the New York Times right timing done an interview it but a Jianqing, I really enjoy a recommended he coach Bud Collins. Once. Saying that the Fed Cup is a splendid idea with a lame name and he quotes spitting Jean King saying. When a woman does something always think we do it for women when a guy does something, they never say they did it for the guys and so one of the changes I hope I can talk about more and more is that I would like people think that we. Are Doing it for the sport not for Women's Sports and I I thought. Absolutely right. It's It's about time attitudes changed. Yeah I thought that was. A perfect summation of both what Billie? Jean King is about an also how how this could be a a way forward for kind of mixed event and and a combination of men's and women's. Competition together but I mean personally that that that's not been my vision for mixed team event I've I've not thought that it should replace. Davis carpet. Now, village Inking Cup I genuinely think that it could go along alongside them. Both I don't think you need to. Get rid of them and combine it into one I. Think you could have a mixed team event like we had with the Hoffman Cup but make bigger thing out of that, and now we've got that point in the calendar with the ATP Cup and that I think that's the point. Many Times. Cup. Turn. So. Many cups when you did all the cups said back to back, it's Oh it's cup overload kind feels to be redundant to be talking about the of the moment you. Know. What the tent tennis Kinda is anymore but I mean personally I'm just saying I think there's room the space. It would be a great thing for a mix team competition to exist alongside. The Davis Cup in now Billie Jean King Cup that we already have our cup runneth over. A. Carrillo.

Artist Bruce Sulzberg on painting Rafael Nadal

"Welcome to the tennis dot. Com Pot guest. I'm one of your host. Nina Pantic joined in this episode by my co host. Irena Falconi! Hey, guys! How's it going? And we have a very interesting episode of everyone today we are with the owner artists of cells media. Fine Arts Bruce Cells Bruce Welcome thank you, thank you so much for having me. Bruce? Do you have a very interesting story? I don't think a lot of people know it has to do with Ross doll. You don't usually have artists on our show, so that's why this is very unique and special you wanNA. Tell everyone story when it comes to tennis. Even if you're not a player or coach or tournament organizer, so let's start with you know where you are in the world during this quarantine and how your life is going these days, it's been very interesting. Interesting just like I would say probably ninety nine point. Nine percent of the world is trying to figure out what the hell you're. GonNa do during his time. you know the one fortunate part about it as being an artist, I've been locked in the studio painting new paintings and working with different ideas and working with RAF and his team Carlos Costa to figure out new and inventive ways to drive in bill business and do things that we are currently not used to doing. So it's been. It's been a wild interesting two months of figuring that out. What's your interest level tenants? Do you play? How did you get into this? US Fascinating I'm actually one of those weird concoctions of I'm an artist athletes so I was a big time athlete. As a kid played eight years of Baseball's all-star in baseball play basketball. I was all star in basketball. Basketball led me. Tennis I was a basketball player. Freshmen in highschool and kind of got into. An argument with my coach basically just decided to leave basketball. And I picked up a tennis racket and I had just. It was a natural thing for me to do. And before I knew I, had a professional coach, and my coach was played played on the tour and played John McEnroe. He saw me play and before I knew I was training with some of the best players in northern, California. And so I played high school career. played college and I still train. I still training a tribe while afford the pandemic I was out there every week. just started getting back out there about a week ago when they released the courts, but tennis is definitely in. My jeans had so much, so that my son plays college tennis. I'm actually had a scholarship to Chapman University as I used to play and made teams freshman, and he's also coach now, too, so and even though he still in college, but yes, definitely in my blood and strange enough. Raw Molly the owner of art encounter. That is my distributor. It turns out the way that we got this deal with him. Was He was tennis player in his whole family's sex players, and when he saw the original painting that I did have all sprouted in hadn't seen them in years we. She just freaked out. Saying Oh my God. This is unbelievable what I told him. I have five hundred signed by the dog himself. Personally and myself and we did a whole thing back in the day. When we have this painting, he's like. Nope, that's it. We're going to do something, so it's been a very unique tennis story all the way around. I can honestly say I think it's been a while that I've actually heard someone say that. They're both an athlete an artist. When was When was the moment where you're figured out like? Wow, I actually have a knack for this whole painting thing. That was easier. I I was asking rg by the time. I was five six seven years old. My parents had me in special school. Special Art schools and You know it was something that they noticed when I was one years old that I can draw and I'd actually kept first painting I drawing than I ever did when I was one and They just knew my dad was artist. He never followed that trade. Actually went into corporate business, but my dad is very artistic used to do paintings. So I kind of had that gene in me. And I just knew at a very early age. That was what I was going to do my life. We hear so much about young athletes figuring out their skill set at a young young age at like three, four five, and to see that art is very similar as interesting for those who don't know the story Bruce is the owner of Salzburg Media Fine Arts, a broad range of professional sports team three. Of National. International athletes he got three D work of Rafa. Nadal for those are not watching this on video. It's behind him, but it's also going to be a link in our episode information. He's also got artwork of Muhammad. Ali Michael Jordan Prince. Fielder Dirk Nowitzki. Irk Nowitzki I'm not a basketball person. I'm sorry. Most importantly. It's the tennis painting that we're really here to talk about, and it's Three D. art, so I want to start with what is three art. What's the process for making an artwork like this before we get into the Roth story? This was very unique idea. That I came up with lean back in nineteen, ninety five, I was doing my very first art show at the New York our next on back in those days that was the largest art show in the world. Everything was painter of any place anywhere was there exhibiting in was at the Jacob Javits in New York City, so as massive and I back then you the jury to get in so jury to get an shared a booth with another artist, and when I was there, all brought was abstract paintings on canvas, because that's what I was painting at the Time Big Love Klee Miro. Picasso, that was kind of backroom basically, and we've been in the show for five days and insult. Damn painting and I told. My My. Fiance at the time in my mom was there with me. I gotTa Take I. Just need to go walk the show and I said. You know if I'm going to do anything in my life I've got to figure out how to do something that no one has ever done and for some reason and it's time. My Dad owned art gallery. Very very successful one back in San Francisco. East Bay and I just something popped in my head. work on glass. Just a glass on the second I got home I started Phil around layers of plexiglas and low and behold. That's how it was born I. Just we just figured out how to frame it how to do the whole thing in. One, doing where usually as an artist you paying on one level is a canvas most most of the time. You're just doing everything on that level of what I wanted to do with cigarette how to take a look at an image of a painting in break it up and put different parts of each of painting on glass, and then use spicer's to separate them, so there's space in between each layer. You get that natural three d look with no gimmicks, no anything no lighting. It's all based on different layers and different perspectives, so that's how it was born and. The risk on history.

"Hello everybody happy while wherever you are on this glorious year revision we can came under your Eurovision Song contest fan you. I think you're even begin to it this year. Weren't you in in Rotterdam so? Have you been coping without the prospect of any sort of live dies than well getting Easter? Now Joel tennis being canceled Irvine being cancelled. Yeah I had tickets for the first time and it's law it was council but hopefully out next year and we had celebration on on the TV last night and had some Swedish food and some cocktails to kind of raise a bit of a glass to what what never happened. But but yeah I think I think you were watching us. Well Joe. You're right yes I was. I catch Lubbock came. I'm going to hold my hand up here. Johnny Logan he comes on the TV and have no idea who he is by turns out. He's he's pretty much the go of of the on contests Mariah a bit. Like the Federa of of your vision life. If you don't tennis you you at least know the name federal. Maybe Johnny Logan could could be a bit like that but yeah. I was quite surprised. You shouldn't you've never heard of him. He's one well three times twice as a singer songwriter. Say He is the kind of the winningest person in in your vision. I guess you could say but yeah maybe actually we can do a European podcast as well. But let's let's go to tennis because we're going to be looking at the Italian. Upn and top eight movements. The happened in rave the last few decades. And perhaps I should lead on this one job because I'm going start with a moment featuring the man himself rapper. One of surprise well yes and listeners. And said he'd rougher bear with us because we all see you're not the end of the alternative Casey's season I mean let's be honest because light Madrid. Rome is Dallas. Hi I think he's one like what nine titles zero something ludicrously say is as as hardly a surprise to kind of see him featured this list say yes came. More is was the first moment. We're WE'RE GONNA be reliving. Well I thought we have liquor two thousand five. Which was you know I play horses and really where he takes. The kind of took it by storm. He won the first time. Yeah his first of nine titles. I think back in five and so he came up against Korea. Who at the time I guess was probably the most to stop ish claycourter of over air or at least one of them very face competitor for sure but the final was another five-set Masters Final five-set thriller? It was over five hours long. Which if you think about now if they were doing that consistently Austin Final Monte Carlo Madrid. That would just be insane. I mean I actually am believe that they used to do this to be called with the but yeah it was. It was a real ding. Dong to one of the better word. Joe Six four three six six three full six and then rougher one at seven six on a law set tiebreak but think about this much. Rougher was a double breakdown and fifth say. Who's three lockdown Sakaria? Really could've gone on us up momentum going away and one but I think really is kind of weakest point throughout his whole career was was his mental strength and he kind of collapsed that combined with with. Rafa you know. Obviously he's attitude his diehard shoot. Never giving up. He was on like a sixteen match winning streak at this point and say obviously he. He had a lot of belief in his game. And but I think Korea would be very devastated after this loss at I think. Actually in his post-match she interceded say this was one of the hardest defeats of his career. I think it was interesting to is. I think Korea probably getting into this matching gains clay season. Yeah he's probably thinking. I'm beatable on clay call. There is no one else out there better than me and who comes along on the Dow eighteen year old teenage eh relatively unheard of and I think this match proved that even when Korea was playing his absolutely best tennis possible. That was someone else out there better than him and I think he was kind of disheartened by that and I think this much great show us. You said mentally he you know he wasn't as strong as some of his other competitors or I think when you're three love up Double in the fifth set us really should be closing that match out and he wasn't able to do that. I think that's one of the things we might associate with a player who you know as brilliant as he is in Korea kind of on the mental side of things. I don't think you could put him up there with the greats and I kind of look at this match. I look at the two thousand four French Open final as well where he Gaston Gaudio. In the final game was five sets but again crucially he was two sets up. He was six love. Six three up was unable to close out the the match. And you know he's probably one of these as you put in the category of greatest players never have one. Ud wonder if if he hit if he had won if he had won this final in in Rome beaten Dow that would have given him the confidence indicate and reinforce that belief that he was and he was at the time the best the best clay court player in the world. I think obviously that loss against scout and then going into this match against Rafeh just his. His mental side of things just wasn't subscription. A Rafeh had beaten him in the Monte Carlo. Final just a couple of weeks before this so again he knew he was up against and he kind of let it. Let it slip away to be honest with you and Yeah so I just thought you know. Obviously this was this was a great match and it was symbolic because again you have this is like the birth of of Raffarin. His kind of play. Call dominance in this. Totally kind of pulsing off of his. You know the best steak or two at the time we had people like Carlos Moya one Ferrara Cowdrey. Kara in a sort of all very good establish trae which just as soon as Raff kind of started working his magic. He'd I guess it kind of became almost impossible. Perhaps to argue against for being the best. Geico

My favourite tennis match

"We'RE GOING TO BE KICKING OFF. A new series and looking at some of a favor owed time tennis. Matches will also be catchy on the tennis news as well a little bit catch on with the virtual Madrid Open. That's just happened Andy. Bari Packard a virtual school as well as the news. The tennis is actually starting up again in some parts of the world in Germany. But before we get into that Kim how you doing. How is how is lockdown? Treating much the same as last week H. O. By fairly fast actually despite the lack of store which is really weird. I think I've kind of just go used to it now but having said that I did cheat in worship Madrid. I didn't won't should awful. I have to say it was. Radi my cup of tea just kind of saying it on a playstation today. What is g thing? Yeah it was a bit of kind of a completely new scenario new situation and I think it's kind of recognizes that living in these times they can open up new opportunities and of course you know this is one of them in the tennis world and I thought it was kind of really interesting to say I think in terms of what I liked. I absolutely loved the place. Be BUYING INTO IT. And procreating like the war codes Up there that the herbs to the controller I really loved that I'd like pretending to warm up thumbs and I really liked the way that kind of the players go invested in it and we're kind of really enthusiastic about getting creative and and kind of showing it off on on social media See I think that was kind of one of the things I I really liked. I saw I think it was Belinda. Bench really went. Allow it like a tennis gear. As I said could walk up the stairs a yeah just thought it was great to see getting really enthusiastic about it. 'cause we've not seen them on a TV. We're not seeing the you know what she pilots. Whatever as fans over the last few months it's just almost kind of great great to see them again really. Yeah I thought that was. That was good like the best saying the players saying the engage with the wall. I thought bench probably owned that one. I just like the little bits in the corner. We can just see their faces as they're playing. You just want to see their homes in the pack right to see what what. They've gone like their bookshelves or like. I just find it really interesting is like through the Keyhole. But he the past and that is really hyping. The stands framed in the background. Well potentially coming up in this focus on his lovely shorts but no yeah I. I didn't really like actually watching this. Nsa Watch just liked having the players kind of interacting having a bit of a laugh so that was nice to see the thing. This format would. I didn't think I'd want to see this every week. I think it would get a bit repetitive. After a while but I think it was a good kind of one off thing and obviously Andy Murray one that we should give him credit for that because he's now won the tournament on three different surfaces. If you can cool the virtual sphere surface adolphus. The Andy has donated his prize. Money half is going to the NHS and half is Gordon to the players Relief Fund. So it's obviously for Good Kohl's and Kiki burdens won the women's event as well and I think she was actually due to defend. Muhtar to say she has succeeded into that are mixed in our love. I love that idea. She's she's the non virtual virtual back to back very innovative. Double D for a champion. But yeah I think yes kind of great to see I guess. Play his Getting involved I think one of the things that I think they could have done. Better way of is the had this common tree over the top of the of the players. Now I I was kind of the point where I think it's more insightful. And more interesting if you just let the play is very commentary because Y- They are tennis players that professionals at the end of the day you'll be ready. I think what bringing up level is kind of almost kind of getting them to kind of talk about the tactics or you know that sort of that sort of level that sort of layer that. Yeah well my sick on a Royal Corps And it's like if I was doing this show in real life. I would choose to go here because of X. Y. And Said Yeah. It could be more of an educational thing as well I think what I did. I cheat and they lost connection because I was watching on light-years addicts correct show. It was just having to could LE- sort of chats while they were waiting for everything to ten on again. Did you see the I think Diego Schwarzer was best. Play at Deborrah. The savvy FIDO's but due to a weak WIFI CONNECTION. Debry a sorry. Schwartzman had to concede walkway. So I mean I love that idea. The like I think that's going to be one of the VAD. The walkover reasons happens to the best of our good today that like even top tennis players have poor Wi fi and all safely on. La has had a bit of a Jake because he said that Rafa could play because he'd like injured his back reaching for his game controller. Which and everyone believes here. I think I mean I think we believed him as well. As we've always believed tweeted about be cowed they gig for Geria- saw and I thought this this off to the best of the fortunately that was not the case. Rafeh was able to play. But we'll just very gullible but yeah if they're going to do this again like I think it could cost you on. But just every now and again maybe they do in other Walden on like Wimbledon. I different surfaces. I assume this playstation game has all the different surfaces they do girl scout one. Couldn't they maybe federal workup? That yeah that I think it could work. I think it could coexist when the tools get back up and running. I wonder if it's a sort of you know in the in the grounds of the events and you have fans can go line up for like an autograph from players and I wonder whether you could be like. There's a stand somewhere grandson for example. Oh face off against some. I player playing tennis against them. Virtually Sake I could see that happening. I know there are a few comments. The game was almost up to like up to scratch And you know whether it's the improvements to be made with with the game and you know I think I think potentially peop- governing bodies like the ATP liked the W. H. E. A. Maybe they should be looking at partnering with Game's about to really kind of Mak- licensed game like fever. Because I think you know I think this is as you said. This is very new is almost kind of this was a test and you know. I think there is appetite for it but I think there's almost kind of a lot can be done on that so a product side of it. Yeah for sure. I'm sure that's an avenue. They could possibly see going for. It's an yeah I like the idea that you could maybe have a bit of a play on it while you are an event. Perhaps if during a rain delay or something and even on Joe we actually have some real tennis. That's happened this weekend in Germany. It's kind of the first actual players of setback on cool so they've done a little exhibition featuring Dustin Brown and seven other players including randomly the British benign. Yon Shouldn't ski. Who I think is based in Germany. Anyway so yeah. That's been happening this weekend. We'll see JEB. So you fall head of other countries. Getting back to normalcy. So they've been out to do this. Little event Neko blends at the Base Tennis Academy. It's GonNa oversee how necessary health and safety measures in place. So they've obviously not touching hands at the net. They're going to touch rockets instead. There's no ballboys fans line judges. They're obviously doing it. Very watered down version is not for any points or or anything. It's not count I guess. Prize money's involved. So it's I guess aimed at lower ranked players to to kind of keep them earning something during this time and I think it's only for players based within about ninety minutes of the event so it's overseas a very limited

It's Sharapover: A Complicated Affair

"Thought we had the weekend off. I thought we had bought ourselves a little bit of time doing that. Mailbox episode but Maria Sharapova decided to upend our brief break and announced her retirement from tennis. Let's not do a whole lung. Preamble about this. We're here because Maria Sharapova has retired and we're here to talk about that to situate her career talk about the the ups and downs of her career and put her career and her into some context. She announced this week via an essay that she wrote for Vanity Fair and Vogue which were released at the same time both conde nast publications. It's the sort of flex that only a player of her magnitude can do. It's been interesting to me to watch her over. I would say probably the past year or a little more and an observed how little attention and how little fanfare has followed her around considering that she was once the highest paid female athlete in the world. She was tennis's biggest superstar for for many years and this latter stage of her career has been quiet. When you say only a player like her obviously Serena can do that too. I Know Naomi can do that too. I think those are the three players in women's tennis who have that kind of stature status to be able to call up an A. Winter. And be like. Hey can I can let y'all know in your publication regardless of who can do it. The point is that Maria is bigger than tennis. In the same way that Serena or Roger or Rafa are Novak are bigger than tennis. They don't have to go through the traditional tennis media to do these things they can call on their sponsors their friends mainstream press. They have that freedom does afford them because they are successful and they make a lot of money. Of course I knew what you meant but I think dealing with a complicated figure like Maria Sharapova comment on us to be as precise as we can with our words so as to not open up ourselves controlled. But we're not doing this. The whole episode. Every every statement about Maria is not an equal statement about serene. We're just not. I agree I'm just saying we can easily cost nothing to be more precise okay. You see what you did there. You put me in a position to be the bad person. Well maybe you shouldn't shouldn't do it anyway. Maria wrote this essay. I think there were probably a few journalists and people within the sport who was coming and we can't release it as a massive surprise considering that her body has been betraying her over the past few years. It's been extremely difficult for her. To stay healthy at this point for even a match or two in a row. Her events have been sparse. It seemed that the writing had been on the wall for a little while. What's interesting to me is that there is no retirement tour. There's no final triumphant moment at a Grand Slam. That meant a lot to her. There's no on-court Farewell. It almost seems I know. Use The word quiet before but it. It just seems a little anti-climactic for somebody who has meant so much to the game for the past fifteen years. Sure but to me. It makes sense because to embark on some kind of farewell tour. You'd have to be able to count on your body to a low to show up for right and I think that's what the bottom line is here for Maria. She told this story in her Vanity Fair Vogue Essay. That just getting on court for her match at the. Us Open last year. Felt like a victory getting the shot in her shoulder Infos cortisone or whatever but just being able to play to numb the shoulder and play in the first round was a big achievement and so she was past the point of being able to plan anything tennis related because their body just wouldn't let her right and I don't think she's the type to be like well. Let me just show up for this first. Rhone have a cute little moment and lose six two six two like. That's not the kind of scripting that she would one. No and she's had an interesting career injury wise because after that big shoulder surgery that she went through with that had really compromised her play. She had to rewrite the way that she served. Her game. Looked quite a bit different than when she was seventeen. Eighteen nineteen years old but she learns how to move on Clay. She wins two French Open. She becomes a dominant player. Again will maybe not a dominant player. But she reaches number one again. She's part of this triumvirate for a little while with Serena and as Aranka all the while dealing with this shoulder issue. That is still very much a problem. It's not just that she won the French Open. She was winning tournaments on clay. Yeah her up until two thousand ten. I believe she had one or made. Just one final unclean. It was green clad. Amelia Island But from two thousand ten words you see Maria making a ton of clay finals in fact the majority of her finals that she makes I believe in the second half of her career come on clay winnings took three times and winning Rome three times. So that's like you said a complete change of course from what we conceive of her to start her. So where do you WANNA start here? Do you WanNa talk about her career on the court and just kind of give a little background where she started where we are now and then I mean the extracurricular things are huge story with Maria as always I wanNA talk about first about her influence one of the things that I've seen since the the announcement that she's retired is some folks. Scoffing at just how much her actual influence was and how much she inspired people and I don't think you can underestimate. Just how much influence Maria Sharapova had in bringing people into tenants. They might not be the reasons that you would want people to come to tennis. But Maria Sharapova is Bar. None globally the most well-known women's tennis player. And we know this. Because Jamaicans don't know what Serena Williams looks like. We know this from schools John's quits. I can't tell you how many times I've interacted with people and they're like what would you like? Well I have a tennis podcast and like Oh Maria sharp over. I'm like do you follow tennis. No but they know who? Marie sharp over yes. Her Persona has cut through so many different facets of life to the point where random people know who she is on top of that. There are a lot of people who the very first match they saw was Maria Sharapova match. And that's the kind of thing that can't control. I was a Cheetah van because the very first match I watched was a continue to match the very first men's match. I watch was an Agassi match. Those are the things that that people hang onto. Because it's their first introduction right so there is that there is the fact that she occupied this place of prominence being the top paid female athletes in the world. For so long we can have a totally different discussion about whether that was warranted or deserved that separate and apart. If you're able to separate those two things then I think you can see clearly that Sharipova mental out to a lot of people and had great influence within the tennis world the sporting world and in society at large globally as well within tennis. She is a polarizing figure. We are not going to pretend like we have always been kind to her on the show. We've had our fun roasting Maria over the years. You've had your fun today with the title for this episode and You know. I'm going to be totally straightforward. Maria is not not a player that I loved to watch play tennis. I can appreciate her place. I respect a lot of things about her. She's not somebody who's matches I- flocked to watch and we've been critical about the way that she wrote about Serena and her bulk about how she handled the IT F. and then water ban and there's a lot going on but she is not an a boring character by any stretch. If you were to look back now and Marie his career what is the one word or the one thing that comes to mind what well? Unfortunately right now. It's Mel Donen. That's the first thing that comes to my e. Yeah like if we're doing plane Word Association. I'm not saying that's fair. Okay but I think when we have some distance when I've been thinking about her career. I'm thinking about winning Wimbledon at seventeen thinking about having a career slam on Sugar Povoa. Her tennis achievements are huge. Because very few women have won a career. Grand Slam. Her off-court achievements are also big and they're also painted by the fact that her blindness and her whiteness made her the perfect foil and the perfect heroin. As opposed to this dominant black champion Serena Williams you know she was the great white hope right again. Another consideration of the great white hope for me. The word is complicated when we covered the muldoon thing. We came down right in the middle of the fence. We come down on either side of the. I think I'm still there actually. It was kind of interesting to go back and look through some of the research done for that episode. What like what three years ago? At this point I'm early. Two Thousand Sixteen when it when it came out so almost four years ago we would have covered this on the show and to now be going through it again are thinking about it again and and feeling the same way like not much has changed for

Nick McCarvel on covering tennis in new ways

"Guest today is nick mccarville he is seen and heard all over the world according as well as on-court emceeing and he got his start as a writer nick mccarville joins us in New York City which is where he lives and we talk about everything from how he got his Argentina's reporting and how he made the switch from writing to being on camera we also go over his schedule and how he manages traveling all over the world as well as his memories that include interviews with Roger Fetter of course who else let's jump right into that interview with Nick mccarville thank you for joining us thanks for having me like our makeshift midtown studio fancy podcast stuff happening or in New York and we caught neck on his way to fly because what else would you be doing it's actually funny because When I was an intern at tennis magazine actually to get an internship at tennis magazine I brought a suitcase into the lobby to go apply as I was of as headed out of town in New York I was there here visiting friends for Thanksgiving and literally twelve years later here I am back at Tennis Channel Tennessee com with a suitcase things have changed but we're still in New York City with our suitcases dragging around makeshift studio so yeah life is good life is good tell us a little bit about post. US Open Life what he's been up to Yeah I post US Open had some time off which was great and then it to Geneva to Labor Cup which is really cool I'd never been to Switzerland which was awesome and it was pretty cool to see that whole set up with I mean is essentially the Roger Federer Copen the Roger Cup In Geneva the fans were so into Federer in Switzerland and I think that when they have that first iteration of Labor Cup they wanted to have it in Switzerland very soon after it started and so to see all of that fanfare for Federer for Labor Cup in Geneva was really cool and I did that social media hosting and some stuff with tennis Australia team that was there and I've been hanging out just like catching on a lot of work stuff that I had during the summer that kind of built up okay so nick I have to ask I am like super huge fetter fan and you know people think that if you're in your home country like they'll probably leave you alone if you're such a big deal but like can he even walk around without being bothered like I've always wondered that Yeah I don't have a clear answer it's a good question but I saw a couple of times we did events within the city and there were like active crowds arounds ederer and obviously you know they opening ceremonies sort of thing at the government building that was really cool and there's a huge amount of fans there I think most of them for Roger and then a couple times we're leaving the hotel he was staying at and there were definitely people gathered around to take pictures and stuff but I did see miracle at one point the kids in the minivan I don't know where they were going but like she was driving which I was like a little bit surprised by was like Oh America's driving the kids around Switzerland which makes sense Ah I we didn't follow respecting America's privacy because I know it's good for me yes I mean that's like a half answer but I think that obviously people everywhere in Switzerland know him know who he is but I think he can still lead somewhat of a normal life esh you get nervous interviewing him because you've done It alive my my most memorable standout Nick Macabre moment is you interviewing Roger Federer in the twitter Blue Room in Australia after he won you also have been Serena select course everyone got to go through the twitter blue room but is there a bit of a different level when you're talking to him or you kind of your professional your cool I mean I'm never professional or cool I always attempt to be both and I fail but no I mean Raj at Labor Cup is so chill because it is his vance right and so he was so easy work with Joe I mean he's always easy to work with but especially in Geneva like I pulled him in for a few things kind of last minute because social media's always on the bottom of the totem pole after the you like TV's and newspapers and that kind of thing so the one that's still gets me a little bit as Rafa like I feel like sometimes rough does or doesn't want to do stuff so I try to be that'd be calculated when I actually asked Ross to do something because I feel like sometimes he's not in the mood to do things I agree I get that vibe and you're not alone there they get that vibe to I'm not even work with them now nowhere near as much as you have but Roger makes things Kinda feel comfortable especially Labor which is what you said it's like he's way more relaxed but ofo makes me feel anxious and kind of makes everyone feel anxious and it's no knock on Rafa either like he is just kind of his personality also comes into a room and he'll shake everyone's hand and say hello and be you know very cordial but I think he's they just have to do so much that I try to be a little more like on my game whereas Roger may be makes you feel relaxed like that's kind of his approach do you do they recognize you does he like South Nick No yeah I actually don't know I I mean I always say hey roger how are you introduce myself every time but I've kind of gotten past the point of carrying if the players know my name I used to like I used to be a thing where I was the player to know my name and I'm just like okay I'm as long as we have a good interview and they feel comfortable and I'm asking somewhat interesting questions than I'm pretty that'd be lovely okay so you've been to all the grand slams so you were at Labor Cup I mean what kind of energy was that like how different from Grand Slam to Labor Cup I mean what are the major differences that you found being there well it's just a completely different event overall fan energy was really awesome and I did Chicago last year as well when it was here which is really cool and the energy in that stadium I the one thing I always sort of given example of Labor Cup because they're still those people out there that are kind of like what is this event and it's so funny it's flooding I mean I I agree with you like we've got to figure out what it is and I think hopefully in the next few years it will but last year in Chicago the entire United Center getting rowdy for Diego Schwartzman that to me is like a pit of misers layup sort of its power but Irene I think it's just a different event overall than a Grand Slam I mean you know it's particular sessions the matches are shorter there's fewer matches it's only three days but the energy is big and the team aspect like people buy into more the demoralized vs Europe thing than I thought they would which is really cool when you're in the venue and it feels like Europe definitely felt like the home team in Geneva which school I love it I was in Chicago last year so I know you talking about is a different different five and as someone working at you feel a lot more comfortable oh I think because there are more comfortable and laid back so I totally get what you're saying but I want to ask a little bit about your star you know I know you started more the writing side than being in front of the era so let's go through the timeline of Nick mccarville tennis reporting career was God because I know a little bit about it but it's it's good you can't see every night and the podcast but she just yawned as you ask that question so I had to call you I'm not I'm sorry I just had a rough night asleep it's funny I know that I shouldn't be ups come on Tell Jet Lag oscillators real so much more annoying than Australia jetlag don't like what is going on I'm so sorry did not could not be worse No it actually I mean I I kind of a little anecdote at the start but I literally was here being friends in two thousand six when I was in college and was like I really want an internship at tennis magazine that was like the big thing for me and I was flying out that Monday after Thanksgiving wing and rolled my suitcase into the office and went up to the front desk manager and was like hey can can I apply for an internship and that summer I interned at tennis magazine we're just cool it was like kind of my first foray into tennis journalism I didn't tennis blogging college and then like they're soon after once I came to New York I was still doing a little bit but kind of my like big break within tennis journalism was in two thousand nine I had been in New York for a year and the New York Times I just started like a whole family of blogs and one of those blogs was called straight-sets which was the tennis blog for the New York Times so I started writing for them most of an unpaid they paid a little bit for certain blogs that they would end up using on the website in different sections but that was kind of my I like breakthrough and then from there I worked on some side projects and got my first writing job with them. MSNBC DOT COM in two thousand and ten the next year and then slowly started making my way into the tennis world that's like way way back I remember for some reason the first memory our first thing I came across was USA. Today I mean so I I worked so I was with at Msnbc and then the daily beast which is a news website and then in the summer of two thousand twelve I got offered to do NBC Olympics coverage for their website as well as work on the US Open APP I was like the APP copywriter so I did all of the copy for the US Open Up in twenty twelve which is it's so funny like how different apps work now like I was specifically hired just for that but those two gigs basically spurred me to start doing the tournament work as Irena Sanger Donald at the Grand Slams and that got me into like writing for tournament websites social media helping people manage their websites overall like digital content and then in two thousand fifteen USA Today hired me as their tennis reporter so I did that for ears Twenty fifteen and sixteen and did that cool feature about Irena in Paris and her

"And she is that when I go in there, I can put her to sleep. It was a lot getting there. But we figured it out. I can put her to sleep, and she's a very very very heavy sleeper. It's amazing anything could be going. You can turn the lights on you can talk really loud. She will wake up Rafa is my three year old very very very light sleeper. Very difficult to go to bed. Leo and Rafa sleep together. Really nice in some ways really difficult for going to sleep like really really difficult. So when I put them to sleep they're both fighting over. And I know you're not supposed to be in the bed with them. But it just like they they they convinced me to and then like, then they want me to be in their bed both of them at the same time. Then they start fighting over then they get out of bed and they start beating each other. Or they have like their beds like the heads facing each other in this table. Between all sit on the table and put like stretch, my arms and legs. So they each touch me. But then it's like sometimes two hours of that before they'll finally falsely, it's it's torture. So I'm wondering though, because I've listened to a few of your podcasts, and you talk about your very structured bedtime routine. But it sounds like somewhere it falls off the rails. And you're not in charge in that moment. It's that one. And it is the mommy factor. Like if Alec goes in there. So I'll disappear at one time. I know not good to do. Because then they don't trust you. But I'll disappear at some point. So I have like my structured routine. I'll disappear Alec will read them stories. Tell them to go to bed, and they just do that. Whereas if I'm there gateway and it's funny because I am the disciplinarian Alec does not discipline them. When they've done something bad whenever anything, I'm the one that's a disciplinary, but it will comes to comfort and sleep. I nursed all of them have been pregnant or.
