Rachel Nichols On NBAs Return To Action Outside The Bubble
"We've been getting clarity about what this season is actually going to look like so it scheduled to start december. Twenty second and the finals are expected to end sometime in july. But i wanna talk to you about everything may or may not happen. I guess between those two dates because this is not going to be a bubble situation. Now what are the broad strokes of what the league is planning for this season. I think one of the most interesting things that's going to happen to the nba. Is that the situation in the country. Should hopefully all fingers crossed significantly change. Through the course of the season rachel nichols is the host of espn's nba show the jump. She's been reporting on the nba for nearly two decades. It could be. Maybe i'm being optimistic that there's enough people in this country vaccinated that the numbers of of infection or lower in deaths are low and that we have a full city to city. Travel fans in the stands. Nba finals when right now a majority i think of nba teams or at least a big chunk of them can't even have a single fan in the building. And i think that the nba is smart and taking sort of month by month approach. They're not even planning to release the full season schedule at the beginning of the season. Has it ever happened before. I don't think so in any sport like it's it's it's all a little bit up as they go along because that would imply that they didn't know what they were doing. And i think the nba has shown they really do know what they're doing as much as anyone can right now but we don't know so much about what's going to happen in this country that i they can look at the first chunk and just say okay. Here's what we're gonna do at the beginning and we'll see after that give you the basics. Though in terms of how many games we're playing year where they're going to happen. What are the fundamentals of what the first half of this. Season's gonna look like right. Well they're trying for seventy two games in quote home markets in home arenas. They've talked about trying to do the puzzle pieces of the schedule in a way. Where teams if they're you know a lotta times. Nba teams love to tell you how bad the league offices screw them on their travels. Because you know if you're portland and all of a sudden you're going to miami and then you're going to utah and then you're going to new york and then you're going to denver and then you're going back to brooklyn you're like i was just in new york. They're going to try to not have that happen. The thing that they have on their side this time is that there's really not concerts at arenas to schedule around the ideas that if you travel to a certain region of the country baseball style you can maybe play all the teams all of which is great and they've told teams when you do travel. Obviously they take their own plane they will get to a hotel but a hotel with other people in it so they've given them rules and there is this you know. Nearly one hundred fifty page rulebook. They dumped on the teams and thanksgiving weekend and one of them was. Hey when you're at the t. motel. Your guys can't use the gym and the only way they can use the gym if the hotel agrees to clear every other hotel guests out of the gym keep it closed for the entire duration of the stay. Have it cleaned between each player when they use the hotel gym. I mean there's just that's the level of Of sort of detail. They've gone into which is great but the bottom line is you're playing a sport on like football. Unlike baseball that has played indoors. Where the guys are breathing and sweating wreck on each other with no helmets or equipment in between so the league. That didn't have any player. Positive cova tests through this whole last. Six months of on-court play is going to have them this season pretty much guaranteed. So you're in the bubble.

"So as the team's number of teams here, contract the teams that are in some of the quote outer hotels are going to come in to this main hotel, the tier. And that's GonNa be a whole thing because you're going to have the eight teams remaining by the time you get to the second round all stay in the same place in the same as and all of that stuff. I. Do think once when you say, Oh, teams are gonNA see other team's leaving I think the whole look we had one two three Cancun when people weren't trapped in a place outside of their families and friends I think if the team gets down in a playoff series and it doesn't look surmountable that pep talk from the coach about, Hey, we're gonNA come back is going to be a lot harder, right? Yeah and that's where I think all along down here the teams who came here. With purpose, who said, we have a real purpose here. and. We have leadership. Because there's some teams who have purpose who I'm not sure have great leadership and vice versa. But if you have both to give a better chance of of Pushing through look at the blazers, right. That is a team where Damian Lillard said throughout the shutdown and he caught a little flat for at one point but he meant what he said and he was right he's like. I don't want to go down there if we don't even have a to win if we're just window-dressing if I don't have a path to the playoffs if I don't have something to play for, why am I going down there right and eventually they came to this decision about the playing games and it's never going to be fair to everyone. But at least this was the most fair to the most people and they felt going in fun. All right. You're giving us a lane at least have a path to get there. The leadership on that team is strong the purpose strong and they by the way think we pull first round playoff upset even though it might be an eight no one. Because you've got veterans that's not a normal eighth seed with rain and. What, that team if Trevor Reza had been hearing in another wing player. They'd be even more. I, mean right now they're going to be dangerous Gary Trent Juniors Bender kind of revelation here, and and now we get into this last week of the seating games rage and you saw it yesterday and I wrote about this today, some of the teams were competing for the to get in the playoffs. They weren't thrilled to see the jazz set everybody in a game against what would have been really an eminently winnable game against the Spurs Spurs are in that group. And the jazz at everybody, and then they play the Spurs again, the last game X. Thursday. In the seating game and you wonder at that point if a team like the jazz who solidified sure how many there guys are going to play then the rest or the end that kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah. But especially against. When you've got all these teams, who said we're GONNA come down or told we're getting a fair chance to to compete to get in the playoffs and then a team competing with just gets a Freebie that you're gonNa to you're to see more guys sitting this week. Now the blazers benefit today because he doesn't play right there's but but that part of it is You're going to hear more talk about that this week. Yeah. But my answer to that is, yeah what's new rate playoff races every year come down to a couple of games land for couple either seating guys getting into the playoffs and there's always teams the benefit from twitter the end of the season, the teams that are safely in often rest there guys arrested people and even in a completely normal regular season, you have teams who are competing for the same playoff spot where one team excel and they're playing the team resting there guys I think the argument, the counter to that is was supposed to be different. and. This was a different scenario like we all accept that we finish out our seasons. We didn't. We weren't finishing our seasons. We all came down. We thought we had you know Kinda this. Plainfield and so I think there's more sensitivity to it because. What you had to go through to back and play, and so again, it is this your it's exactly how this goes down the stretch of any season and by the way if it's Milwaukee or the clippers, I would look at any of those teams or the jazz in this case who were saying Oh this isn't fair. Why aren't you fully participating and saying I'm not wrecking my team for your benefit right? I think my guy needs to rest going in the playoffs. So yes, I'm all for the sense of fairness and Everyone giving it a shot. But when I feel like it actually starts to damage my teams playoff chances. I'm not going to do that and I don't blame them right if they feel I'm again I'm pulling this out of the air but if they feel after rescue on us for the final game of the regular season or whatever, they're not going to not do it because San Antonio needs to feel like they had a fair shot against whoever I mean the they wanna be short for the playoffs and it could be anyone. There's going to be. I think the Camaraderie of Hey, we're all in this together. It's important for the League. We've got to think about something bigger than ourselves. We gotta get down there. WE'VE GOT A. Like our league depends on this I think that's going to get chipped away out here and self interest starts to drive starts to drive it absolutely as as expected and by the way fans complain about players being to collegial now, right Back in the nineties whatever well. You know they're only collegial up to a point. Though is going to be fun. We're we're listening we're. Almost. To the playoffs. You know week. Loose track dates. Let's. Say. About. We've got about a week, Thursday Friday the end of the seating games and then. into the playoffs some this was fun rich. Thanks for jumping in. You've got another. Week or so here, and then refuel at home and then come back. Out Yeah absolutely. But it's it's fascinating and I will say as the last thing being here you have a great awareness of just how complicated this was to pull off that every decision but gets ten more decisions. Okay. We're GONNA them food. Well, how are we bringing in food who's bringing the food who's cooking the food or are they doing it in the quote safe zone and a separate zone or they bring it? In I did a piece on the mail room here, which like it's a mailroom right it shouldn't be that complicated. It's really complicated how packages and everything or getting in here. So the scope of what the NBA has pulled off here even as we start to worry about next season, it is worth noting that when you were inside the bubble, it is tremendous. It is so impressive and it says something about the League. Absolutely rich. Thanks. We'll we'll. See Round here soon absolutely..

"Back into this bubble Rachel, think prior to when this was being laid out to the players in the teams and what everyone's concerns were about. How everyone would handle this? What's been your sense around players? About think there was some fear of guys. We're going to be climbing the walls in here that people were going to be so frayed by the how contained it was. Now, we haven't been in. There's a long way to go in here. What did you guys in terms of? How they're handling. The limitations of being in a bubble in. The environment around this place it's kind of interesting right I mean everybody out there can make the same designations within their friends circle. Especially, in the first few months where of the pandemic where everybody was really in their homes, there's a huge split between your friends who had kids and your friends who didn't rate my friends who have kids were constantly like God I'm trying to teach eighth grade math to my own child while also working while also doing this and I can't go outside my friends with little kids We're we're climbing walls because the. Kids were contained in a space and they can't go to the playground anymore anything my friends who didn't have children were like, oh. What did you binge this week? What? What did you do? Whatever you know that sort of thing so I think you're seeing the same thing in the bubble where you have players who are in their early twenty s who live an apartment anyway who basically even when they're back in their. Home Market live in the apartment, hang out with some other guys on the team and maybe some other random friends and who they've met in that market or whatever, and sit around and play video games. We'll the bubbles better for them. This is actually better. They don't have to worry about getting themselves. From ADP, NBA players lives are already pretty catered. Now, they're completely catered like literally from the moment they wake up to. The moment they go to bed someone's planned and thought of everything for them. They get to hang out with a bunch of their friends, not just on their teams but other teams to now they can go anywhere. They want to other hotels in whatever the Lakers have this madden football tournament going on where each guy put in a few hundred bucks and they picked a team to be for the whole season they have. Complex they. By weeks. They have a whole schedule. I believe they're in week seven quote unquote of their tournament You know. So for some of those younger guys I think. Quite except for some of the very specific G, they can't be around. Women or the public in the same way. But I think for a lot of those guys, it's actually for the eighty percent of their lives is a great set for them for the older guys with families. It is very impactful enters hard and I was talking to I. Think it was Kyle Korver about you know I've said to him Oh you know that's a team Milwaukee that's a team that intends to be here for a while and. You know are are you gonNA. Bring Your family brain and he said, you know I don't know he's like the policy for families is that you've got to come into the state. You've got a quarantine in Florida in a strange place that you don't know not at home, and then you have to come in here and quarantine in a single hotel room for I think four days he's like my wife with young kids and and she's a single hotel room with the children and they can't go anywhere and they can't go out and do anything. The process to bring families into the bubble is so stringent. I understand why? But I've heard players say I don't know if I'm GONNA bring my family in and then that's a very different situation for them and I think it's very hard to those guys I think are feeling the impact of the bubble in different way. was talking to a GM about this the other day, and he thinks that once team start to be eliminated and they see guys leaving. that. It'll be interesting to see the impact on the guys who are staying and I think it's going to get I think it's already there was a Toronto. Boston game the other day. That was it was chippy and it was a physical game. It was a it was. What you're going to see is we get in the playoffs and There's a lot of curiosity about I. think so far it's been pretty collegial in the. Rival like their rival teams in the same hotel down the same elevators they're coming through. It's going to be different when you're in a seven game series with somebody and something happens because something's going to happen. and. Now you're going back to the hotel now. The Environment And oh by the way, the referees are all living among you. Yes and the referees are here and All the are going on like these speed walks around the campus or coaches get out is a staff just to get out of their head and referees or there and. It's going to be a different environment I think as we get through his is the first. Group A, teams, leave, and then we get into the post season I. think the feel around this place is is going to dramatically change i. feel it in some spots already was it kyle lowry who shouted out his remember to someone the other day on the court and said, you can catch me here you're that interested in it. And also all the are going to be moving into the same hotel. So as they advance now we're spread around three Disney properties and that was part of the arrangement with Disney. The Disney would close those properties to the public, but obviously just needs not making the money from the public on those properties..

"Whiteboard I don't know if there's literally whiteboard since probably nobody's in the office there. Maybe and Adam Silver's house but. If the season were to start later, do something similar to the NHL which was a an Olympic break and then come back and finish. For a couple reasons, you'd allow your players who to go play in the Olympics. Also it allows you to not have to go up against the Olympics for television. Even beat Olympics. Two, thousand, twenty one, that's the other as say I'm not sure there's going to be an Olympics, I mean you and I have covered a bunch of Olympics and we know the scale of that and the idea of bringing not just the athletes but all the team people and that coaches and trainers in from all of these different countries all over the world to basically have the. What would turn into a virus summit and then have them bring that all back to their countries and fans the Olympics really runs on ticket sales. So if that see, you know if I don't know what the State of Japan is going to be, and whether they're going to allow fans in the stands, but that would obviously be part of the Olympics, but even if there is an Olympics and. Even. If the NBA figured out of which take a break again you're dealing with it's not just a break of Oh. We're going to let the players go home for two weeks in the pot idea or go to the Olympics for a month. You then have to have that re ramp-up of anyone who went has to a get back into the country which we've seen is now a border problem. Because of different countries, closing borders because of Corona virus, and then do they get tested when they come back and how many of them have caught something, and then how many of them have to be put isolation when you're trying to plan a calendar of Oh, we're going to take a break for ax. You then have to basically add a month to everything to really ramp up for a safe environment. How much do you think what baseball or the NFL does this fall and whether they have acceptable losses quote unquote of like Oh hey fourteen marlins players got it. But we're still going we're not shutting down the League when fourteen MARLINS members organization. Got It. And if the American public is okay with that overtime with baseball and football, how do you think that's going to influence the NBA with how tightly sealed? They feel like they need their bubble bay. My Sense. All along Rachel is that the League has. I. Think has in the Players Association and that's where it gets back to I, think when you compare the NBA to baseball in the NFL. The biggest difference in how I think these decisions are made. It is is far less of a adversarial relationship. With the League in their player Association versus the NFL and baseball which are. Baseball's extremely cereal. I think football. Might know better. I. Think you do know better somewhere in between baseball in the NBA quite as bad as. It has certainly has its moments maybe it is as bad but they're certainly not good. And I think that. Impacts how the NBA. And the players. Work together on. What they allow and I think there's more I hear it all the time and we're seeing it in other sports and I talked at team people whose research and data. You know the really concerned about the long term impact of getting the virus on people's bodies on the lungs on the whatever they they don't have that information you're starting to see some instances. That are very alarming people in sports and so this idea of well, I'll just get the virus and then I'll be immune and there isn't that jude, it'll be two weeks it'd be it isn't that attitude and I think so I don't sense. There's this cavalier now individually, are there players who I think in some instances thought that way that way? Yeah. But. Just like there are people in society who think that way I don't think. But I do think there's concerns and so I think there's less. I. Do think that the the NBA as a whole when you count the players and the League have less, I think less of a willingness to just have. An acceptable level of. Of loss personnel over the course of a season and I think. Barring. Dramatic turnaround in. This. country. I have a hard time seeing them trying to play this league. Outside of a bowl. And remember to basketball is a sport where everyone's breathing on each other the most they're shouting within distance of each other baseball says the advantage of haywar outside and guys aren't banging into each other in the same way all the time. But I am curious again would goes back to what becomes normalized right what would people just kind of deal with an accept and if we go through an entire baseball season here and then start up an NFL season here where team seemed to be okay. If there's a rash of eight players who get it and then either they. Cancel that game because they can't put a baseball roster together or they don't cancel that game because they complain NFL game without eight of their guys, and then that just becomes a normal thing and acceptable thing in sports I wonder how that impacts the NBA thinking even if they are league that has historically even historically care more about their players and certainly now have the best relationship I, mean the the stuff you'd have Jeff Passan NBA, versus baseball with so eye-opening but even then I just it's again what's normal in this country and every day changes I think. For the League now. There's a lot of negotiations and have to go on about next season between the players association the NBA. A great deal of it hasn't really started there. They wanted to get through the beginning of the restart they wanted to get off. Kind of keep their focus on. Getting through and beyond solid footing within the bubble but those conversations are going to start I think more in earnest. Now I mean, we're not far off..

"People who sit courtside and pay the most money the people in the sweets because in the end it's going to be you're gonNA try to raise as much money as you can off of however many seats people you can get in you're GonNa, make this exclusive experience. There's really no other way to do it if you're just trying to pin so many markets, it's not up to the NBA is not going to be there are some governors there's. So many governors who have already said we are not allowing mass gatherings at sporting events and I think even two thousand people qualifies as mass gathering to them in the northeast. All of those governors have been very strict about what they've done, and by the way it's worked the coronavirus numbers are lower there than anywhere else I live in California where several NBA teams are the governor of California back in April said no more fans at sporting events for the entire calendar year. and. Then the one other idea that I think is I think lowest on the Well. There's a lot of them are neutral sites. What if? Let's say you're in L. A. Washington new. York. You cannot have people in arena and there's more cities than three. But there's a city where you could. It may not be an NBA city, but it may be a metropolitan enough location that says, no, no, we could. We could accommodate fans maybe it's Vegas maybe it's Nevada maybe it's now again to think that that there will be places in this country that can put thousands of thousands of people in an arena within next year Harder. Budget. But that's again one of the they're trying to roll through every possibility. That's another one of them. But what's the demand then to rate if you're only one neutral site? People. You and you even if there is a way to put fans even if you've got gotta state to let you do it for the first week maybe you'd have enough people who are in that state wanting to come to games. But at some point, you're not really gonNA have fans travelling in for those games in the same way because there's so many travel restrictions in places and a lot of people are like on like getting on an airplane right now or that kind of thing if you want to have an eighty two game season with thirty teams in one site. Because you can have fans in their what the fan demand going to be. Once you get to game forty two. And I think teams. Now you talked to them and they're really struggling with the idea of you keep telling people no fans in arenas. No because it's reality. No fans no fans. It's not a great most places. You are really trying to market organization to sell tickets, sell outs or not automatic. Anywhere but a few places. and. You have an audience that you're chipping away at here, and that's why the teams who aren't playing. Now the Atlanta's in Cleveland's and Minnesota's and Detroit's who need to be in the news they need to be have a presence in their market. If they're all rebuilding teams. Some have more to sell than others to their fan base the idea for them, not just that they can't get their team together and they see the wizards and sons with younger rosters here getting training camp and Games and like what advantage this is. But in. Chicago's who aren't in this. Like not just that you can't get your players. Organized in the gym, you further distance from your fans hang customers who? Stuck in assume they're all gonna come back in the. For the following season. It's a lot of trouble for the league. That's why I am concerned about this idea of let's push it off. Let's push off because I think what we've learned in this country this year with this virus is the end is not as insight as we might thought, it was at the beginning I think that when we were all sitting in our houses at the end of March, the assumption was well I mean certainly by the fall we'll have football back football sitting there being like Oh yeah the NBA and Major League Baseball figure this out but it'll be fine by the fall and of course, that's not the case so i. Love reading every story about a promising vaccine literally, the best news in my day when one of those pops into my timeline but we also being told by medical experts that even once a vaccine comes out the first crack at a vaccine is not usually the best one and the distribution for vaccines taken entire calendar year if not more to sort of cycle through country. So when I hear the Oh, what the League wants to start December first but maybe they pushed back to February again in your story today about the idea of Martin Luther King Day at the end of January or February around the all star typical break or something. I think banking on the fact that it's going to be better by January or February does not seem to be in line with the news. I'm following right now and so I do worry to your point about presence of mind not just for those markets for the twenty nine markets in thirty teams is if you just kind of keep endlessly pushing back until quote we can have fans you go year without basketball and I think that would be so detrimental to the league's a whole teams i. mean you know the financials better than me like I don't know how teams could survive that you're going to see tremendous. Lay Offs. There's been some I. Think you'd see mass layoffs and organizations. They go a year without fans and without that revenue for most. You'll see dramatic cuts which the average fan may or may not care about but the financial impact on organizations will be. Dramatic and how they operate and You know back to the vaccine I know the League has told teams. If there is a vaccine sometime. And of two, thousand, twenty year beginning two, thousand, twenty. One of something is you know expect a year for the distribution like you said in so that doesn't just mean magically we're gonNA. So. Those are all. Factors and then the Olympics and how the Olympics plays into in Tokyo and July. Part of the thought of starting December one was got the season over in time for players to go play in the Olympics one other idea they have brought up in his on the..

"The virtual fans thing took a minute for everyone to get their bearings on what it was but the fact that you can have celebrity cameos at NBA game still, which is an essential part of this constellation of what makes the NBA kind of glamorous the you can figure out a way to do that in Orlando in the middle of pandemic. Pretty Brilliant. So we're almost to the playoffs. In this bubble. No positive tests. The basketball has been pretty good that it's going to get better. You Start and see the intensity of the Games. There's more on the line now. With especially with Memphis losing jaren Jackson and they're fighting to just hold onto the eighth seed. Portland San Antonio. Phoenix still tried the those three. Had further to come from behind. But yet when you talk to people around the League. A lot of the focus is still on next season. And what next season's GonNa look like I wrote about that today and laid out a lot of. A lot of the brainstorming that's going on. And I think I, do too. I think there's two things that people really WanNa know thing internally externally. When does! The season start? Right. Now, it's pencilled in for December one. And and is there going to be a point this season? Where they're going to be fans. And I think both those questions are still. I think they're on answered I, think again and. Bubble or Even if there's no fans, 'cause you do at home markets or would you have to do it in a bubble exclusively? Yeah and if you're GONNA, do it in home markets with no fans you're going to probably do the practice facility. You're going to do it in venue that number one cost less than half to open up, you can dress it up, for TV, a little easier. Perhaps, but then you're asking your players to live. The way the baseball players are living here, NFL players living in communities. Where there's no in many cases no handle it all on the virus were or. Michelle Roberts is on the record of saying. If we see then what we're seeing now, we we need to be back in a bubble and then the bubble conversation right now I'm told is. More than one bobble. Maybe. Almost, a pod. Idea and nobody knows team in a bubble for longer than a month. So you might go in for a month budget teams play each other everyone goes home. Go back to your family you go back to practice. And then you move onto the next pot. The next group of teams you plow through a bunch more games. With the idea that at some point in the season Can you get fans in arenas? That's the most important thing to owners. Because of the impact, it has on revenue. And and what they've said to me is if we're GONNA push back from December one or push it back significantly the reason to do so as we think the will be a point where. We'll be able to get people in Arenas. I have so many questions about this. We've been talking about this for weeks. I'm fascinated by what they're gonNA do for next season I think a lot of people are because this season feels like, okay we have a plan and we don't know how it's GonNa work out but we do know the bubble seems to be working at least now we see the teams we see the structure we know how it's going to go but let's take the mini pod theory right if they did that. It took about a month for them in the NBA was so smart in the way they manage coming into this bubble for to start testing players member. They started testing the first week in July, and that is where the net had to be to catch guys who Were positive and didn't even know it right those guys had to be home and quarantine for a minimum of fourteen days. It took some of them longer right. Then by the time they get to the bubble they still caught the net still caught two people who made it all the way here to Orlando, and we're quarantining in their rooms and had positive tests and then had to be isolated, and then you basically got to the point where you could get two zero positive test for players in the bubble but it took about four weeks to run everyone through the cycle of testing and quarantining, and then having teams have their full. Failings players if you're talking about many pods right where you have players in for four weeks and then out, I believe you had your story, the idea that it would be what two weeks out. Well, if someone goes home to their family and even if they're not reckless, you don't have to be reckless to to catch this virus. So they go to home to their family and their kid play date with someone or something like that, and ten days into those fourteen days. They become positive but don't know yet, and then they're showing up for the next pod and get tested and what I mean by the second pot, I can see half the teams having significant player loss players in quarantine, and maybe that's just going to be reality from now on. But even that seems to be an issue I don't know how they're going to do it. You know teams are. Modeling. All kinds, different scenarios internally, what would it look like an arena with two thousand fans or four, thousand or eight thousand are there points where we could bring in?.

"Here in the bubble with ESPN's Rachel Nichols. Rachel. How are you? I'm bubbalicious. Thank you. Saturday morning in the bubble and. We have a little corner of. The the resort here's a little. Corner of ESPN people and. We get on a bus we kind of move around here. You've been here. What made him month a month? Long have I been here? You lose track of time I mean let's be honest. I was losing track of time this entire shutdown rate. How do you differentiate a Tuesday from a Sunday when no one's actually going out of the House to work or school or anything like that. But yes, down here absolutely. One of our colleagues was coming down Forecast Hubbard? She's coming in. And she texted me the other day and said Hey I'm leaving. What should I bring and I go I. Thought you weren't coming to like August seventh or something. It was August six. Yeah. Oh, that's not two weeks from now. Now that's that's now. There you go. When people ask you? Rachel. What it's like in here especially. To Watch the Games because people are watching the Games on television. And what I get a lot of like you guys aren't carrying the sound in there. Right? The players don't hear the piped-in sound. They're not hearing. The music this is just for TV ragged there's a lot of. People. Think that we're just sitting in A. Quiet empty studio we'll part of that is because they used the scrimmages to experiment with what was in the gym versus what was on TV and at the start in the scrimmages, it really was a lot quieter in the arena. You could hear the squeak of every sneaker they weren't piping in the crowd noise they were piping and music, but not crowd noise for the first couple of scrimmages. It was silent at the free throw line to the point of Jj Rettig told me he hasn't shot free throws without noise. He's not even duke he said a Duke. You'd have the student student section hushing each other, but there was always some guy from Maryland yelling. At me the other way and here for the first week or so of games, they cut the music out for three free throws and he said he was so unnerved at absolute silence when he was trying shooter the he looked over Jamal Crawford on the bench at one point said, can you start heckling me or something like come on and that I think enough players said it's weird when it's completely silent. So they did start piping in some crowd noise and things like that and it's late I don't think it's heavy as it is on TV but there is no point in the building now where it's complete silence and it was for the first couple scrimmages. I've told people it feels like you're on a spaceship. Watching like holograms like you have to you sitting there. And you've got the virtual fans in the background and then the benches and then nothing else around it and you're going well. James Harden, right? That's definitely honest. That's Libron. But it doesn't seem like it should be them but it is. For the first few games when you're at because we are at almost floor level or floor level depending on the arena but we're basically right there on the same level as the players and for the first few games to me it felt like we were actually inside a video game video game graphics are so good right now that it really felt like with the video board surrounding us it felt like I'm like, Oh, I'm in trouble now like this is what's happening. But I think it's remarkable and I'm wondering if it's the same for people watching on TV how quickly it feels normal and maybe that's an analogy for all kinds of things in our country that had been normalized but it goes pretty quick. I'm watching the Games now and I'm not thinking, Oh, I'm not seeing so and so in the Super Fan in the stands or any of that, do you feel like when you're watching to get lost in the game being normal now? Does, you get used to it and I've watched I'm obviously watching games in the arena, but I'm also watching games back. You're not there all the time and and so. It does I. Guess it's like anything else. It's funny when we first talked about Orlando and playing here in the division I had I've seen games in. What's called used to be called? The Milk House I guess they call the fieldhouse. Now I've Seen College Games and there I remember being here. I. Guess It was a Thanksgiving Tournament and I stayed a couple days. Later I remember it come down with my family and I knew there are a bunch of NBA scouts GM's at one of the college thing. So I stayed a couple extra days. And so I remember watching like a Rhode Island. Whoever they were playing a game and it was empty and it was like. And the seats were largely empty and you're going so I'm picturing. Are. An NBA game with all these empty seats in the background. not this the very beginning before you realized. How they were going to frame the court and they weren't going to see any of that and it is from what I I imagined because of my experience having been there to what it's become, it is pretty remarkable. I think it's brilliant I really do I mean given the limitations of what you can and can't do. I. Think it's pretty incredible with the sidelines they've created for fans to be able to see and the virtual fan thing is so funny you and I talked a few months ago. The last part I did with you about what were they going to right and what Korean baseball had done, and now what we see American baseball is doing with the cardboard cutouts in some cases and whatever..

"What can I ask you in your in your reporting and all the people that you do does the timing Jive to you because one thing that Adam said to the players on the call was. We don't have to make a decision in May. We don't even have to make a decision by early June. And I'm listening to Bobby. Run through all of these gymnastics and I think he's very kindly. Simplifying them for the purpose of this discussion. But that we're talking about what sounds in my head like yes. Robbie two months of negotiations at best right. And don't they have to have those negotiations done by the time they bring everyone back? So addition to figuring out the testing issue figuring out where they're going to play. I can't wait to see which players would rather be in. Orlando near Disneyworld. Would you rather compared to wish? Flairs would rather be in Las Vegas. That's going to be a humorous EIBAR Depending on what? Your vice is And all the other complications that go with figuring this out if Adam silver says hey. We don't have to make a decision now. We have to make decision in early June. How do they see the timing working out wo Jr so they actually get a season in before Thanksgiving well? That's their willingness. A few weeks ago or a month ago I had been reporting that they they're hopeless to have it wrapped up by Labor Day weekend that they wanted to be done before. Football started if if indeed. Football's GONNA start then but they become an that was wishful. It wasn't a hard deadline and the they're willing to go especially because there's such momentum towards starting the season mid to late December regardless of whether they played on pushing that back and then getting on a calendar that takes next season into August. Your power long would have to be that gives them more leeway here to delay and hold often. The Players Association told their players when they agreed to basically almost a second escrow of with the force majeure basically they were gonNA take a little withhold players money so that if games are cancelled which we we know they'll be regular see. Some regular games would be cancelled and the owners take that money back that the players did have to give it all at once that they told the players then we will know we believe we will know by June fifteenth and that was a little bit of an estimate. I think that's I can't imagine a scenario where we're in the middle of June and they haven't set guys were were. Were GonNA Open Up If you decided on June first opened up training camps you're not opening them up on June second and so it's GonNa take a little time to get them open. How long are they going to be? I think they're not going to be six weeks or not. Going to be five weeks and I think Adam put three to six weeks. I think three is the minimum Chris. Paul talked about at least three weeks of and I. I would be shocked if it was more than I think what they'll end up saying is hey. We opened up the facilities. You guys are getting back into it. Counts for some pain and so it but but Rachel you're right like I think they can get the season going to finish and resume it right bobby without needing to have next year salary cap because you pushed it back to the autumn. Let's let's say the draft and free agency are going to be at that point October and we know we're not I mean. They haven't cancelled the draft on June twenty fifth yet. it's coming. They're going to push that date back by all indications and so And if you're pushing the draft back you're putting free agency back with that. Buys THEM TIME RIGHT BOBBY? Yeah I mean I think I think when you look at it of course the cleanest way to look at it right would be. Yeah we get through. All the finals would be mid August right drafts. The end of August basically just pushing in September first agency starts right. We're just me basically pushed the counterbalance. The draft agencies have free agency. I'm GONNA have like a pig by on line..

"A good neighbor state farm is there. Let's start to kind of play out one Return to play might look like the season. Adam. Silver told the players that he would like to have not a shortened postseason. Best Five in the first round or a best of three than a best of five in two seven game series that he wants to have a full full playoff scenario. Best of seven series ideally and to do that. Listen there's only so many days they're going to have to play. And so if you want to try to put as much legitimacy as you can on a champion than on the front end which would be comedy regular season. Games might be played or a play tournament and when you talk to teams there's been an and atom didn't rule it out with the players on the idea of some kind of a play in tournament because right now the the eighth seeds in each conference are you're not gonna catch either of them especially if you're only going to play a few games before the playoffs the is not gonNA get caught but you've got incentivize for these other teams to go through training camp to put players out on the floor. I've had a number of teams. Tell me who are in that nine to ten eleven range. They're going to be more motivated to play their key players. If there's a chance they can get into the post season and I think that's what we're going to start to see a lot of people aren't going to get. It's not gonNA feel fair. It's not going to be what they want. And it's going to be Adam sober to sal. Everybody which is what he's been trying to do through this on the greater good of the NBA. Like for owners. This may not be good financially for you to have to play these games because you're not getting gate receipts your team's not in the playoffs and you guys in the Senate Seats Dallas and your Memphis you. Have you have thoroughly outplayed? Those teams are outside the playoff picture. And it doesn't feel fair that you can lose it in just a couple of days and they could gain in a couple of days but those are all the questions like that again. It gets back to the idea of the best of a lot about ideas. I think though it's an easier sell two teams in that eight. Who feel like man. We just deserve this outright than it would be if you were talking about the top seeds because realistically there's only one year in NBA history. Right where the she has made the finals. So the idea that. Oh if you're in the AFC you could have had the this year but you're going to get knocked out from a plan tournament and that's not fair and you would have been in an eight versus one you pro. I mean the statistical likelihood is better no matter how plucky everyone is that eight seed. They would have been eliminated after the first round so even though it is not fair maybe this year to have a plane tournament when you would have won that. Eight seed outright. You're talking about Uber. Take One playoff round as opposed to give or take of much chances of a title. I feel like maybe that's an easier. Sell two teams but I. I don't know I would say the counter to that. Rachel's if you looked at let's use the example of the NCAA basketball tournament right like the eleventh or twelfth seed knows. They're not going to the final four or they're fairly confident they're not but if you say hey we're not gonna put you in the NCAA. But I do think that's but it gets but you're right right so they're not GonNa win and it is in the end. Who Cares but I do think that's what's GonNa come back to this over and over. There are GONNA be a lot of scenarios and this is going to be Adam silver's job with the owners with his players. He's got sell them on the greater good and the importance of creating some interest doesn't play in tournament was probably coming in next season anyway The owners were getting ready to vote on it. That was the one you know. Some of the players Chris. Paul was not really. I talked to Chris Paul about that a couple years ago when the idea was first coming up he didn't love the idea and there are a lot of players who felt that way. Hey we earned our way in the playoffs. We did it over. Eighty two games like somebody should be able to jump in the league saying. Hey we've got a. We've got a drive. More interest in this thing and driving interests will be a big part of any return to play while I think the enrich the interesting thing. Is You know they'll be training camp of three to five weeks. A month may be but what happens from training camp to the playoffs right. What is that in between layer? If you are the Lakers for example are you going to allow them to jump into the playoffs? I is going to be some games before that. Is it fair to them that they will play the winner of Memphis verse? New Orleans were those teams of hardy. Played Games before where you actually played at series here. So I think that's going to be doing. Is there a your bring back all thirty teams to play or regular season games at the end of You know at the end of at the end of the regular season here. I think that's going to be the big part. As far as is that you know that next layer in between phase will the stakes are so different for every team right now this to me some of the most disparate situations we've seen among NBA teams in a really long time and was to your point teams that are completely out of it like the warriors? Mathematically statistically out of it we've discussed a lot in the past few weeks they have almost no incentive to play other than for that quote greater good being good team players that kind of thing whereas team like the Lakers you mentioned bobby has completely wildly different incentive not just because their title contenders not just because of the marketing and their deal with their local TV provider. Were if they hit that. Seventy Games work and all that stuff. But because they're one of their star players is at an age where this season is more valuable to him. The next season right. He's going to be thirty six next season so not as valuable as season so to them their incentive to get something this summer is maybe even greater than say the bucks right who hopefully they're hoping have centered. Kubo for years to come so it the sense what you had in your story a week ago. Where you cited general manager saying it's hard to lead by consensus in a crisis has stuck with me ever since that article because I think that it is one of the biggest challenges facing the NBA. And Bobby you can give us insight into this in my mind. I'm imagining every front office. Every owner having wildly different needs in wants here in pushing for wildly different things. And that's got to be true on the players side as well. You're right I mean it's interesting because Joe Side the owner of the nets was on a a Stanford Business Conference with some students in any basically said he didn't want to fully Say but you talked about thirty honors. Everyone has a difference of opinion as far as the top eight. WanNa start playing. Well maybe teams Thirteen fifteen see. WanNa get going for focus on the draft. It's that were they're gearing towards so you're right but I do think you know Bob Myers came out yesterday. Guess there they were sent like. Hey we will be good partners here right like we if you tell us. The comeback and play three or four regular season. Games are fifteen regular season game. We will be back. We will be there yet. I I think for the players that listen. There's financial incentive for every player to play as many regular season games as I can to to get their money because whatever games are cancelled the NBA's go to invoke force majeure which basically allows teams to take back about one percent of your salary for each game missed and I've heard discussions among teams of. Should we have a scenario where we just do a play in tournament of seven through twelve and the rest of the teams we tell them to pack it in we tell? Atlanta GOLDEN STATE CLEVELAND. You guys are and we'll share the money that they would have to create some share of revenue to compensate like. I don't imagine that happening and I don't know that Adam Silver's even considering it but I know in front offices when people are bouncing around ideas that's been a conversation. This tolerance of risking to bobby mentioned I think is the other sort of third rail sideline issue of getting players at a point where they are comfortable with the level of risk involved. And it's such an interesting thing for the entire country right is not just. Nba Players. Every time you drive down a highway you are taking a risk and obviously I'm not equating highway deaths with corona virus because highway deaths are not contagious but it is an example of assumed risk in this country. If we just shut down the highway system in this country tens of thousands of lives would be saved. People would never drive more than forty over forty five miles an hour but we have decided over time as a country. There is an acceptable tolerance of risk. And you are trusting. The people driving speeding hurtling toward you. The other way and we saw so tragically Monty Williams a few years ago. His wife died because they're distracted driver driving sixty miles an hour the other direction and killed her and mark. Cuban came out this week and he said players have to decide with corona virus. Who are they trusting with their lives or they trusting the person at the hotel or they trusting? Who Do you trust with your life? That is the question and it is. It's very dramatic for market. Taught that way and it feels very dramatic as we sit here and try to make these decisions from scratch. Nobody told the entire country to decide from scratch in one month okay. How many people do we feel comfortable with dying on a highway this month? No one ever had to make that decision. Just kind of evolved and that's how we have a comfort level with risk. We are being asked to make that decision all at once here with corona virus. And I think that is very difficult for people to do even if they are regularly taking other risks in their daily life. It's hard to unilaterally. Say great were fine with X. Many thousand people buying it should be hard that that that's not a natural thing to want to do and yet there is some element of that equation. Is Adam stressed on the call with the players? There is no zero risk situation here. The only way to zero risk situation is to just shut down each other's vaccine and that's just not something they're looking at right now and and Adam silver talking to the players yesterday. There's going to have to be a lot of cooperation trust. There's GonNa be some some very difficult negotiations that will go on because they've got to collectively bargain almost any of the changes. That would come whether it's going to a one or two site bubble or pushing the start of next season to December regardless of whether they play or not Any number of things have to be agreed upon with the players. And then there's going to be like real financial realities in bobby paint. The picture for people of what Free Agency is going to look like How the salary cap is going to impact. What the not just free agency how. It's going to impact the draft going into next season and and what players can expect to see. I think the the commissioner painted outward. It's basically going to be two years of negotiating. Cba crammed into too much right. I mean that's that's the reality of it in. Its you know so you look at it a lot of ways and I think the big question. What is the salary cap into? What is the luxury tax going to be in the equal? The easy answer would be if we go by the letter of the CBI. The salary cap in luxury tax is going to crash right. It's going to go from a project that one hundred and fifteen fifty million dollar cash to ninety ninety five.

"And turn to Hollinger behind you will that guy is and I love Chris. I love grandma everything about Chris. Not right they have no expectations so they go in whoever they face in the first round he's going to have to play the rockets in the first round that was on the table. That would've been interesting with Chris. Paul going up against Brusson James Harden whether it's them or Denver or Utah. Forget the LA teams for Second Oklahoma City team. Riding on free money found money is going to face a team that put a lot into trying to win this year and maybe beat him and that's fun as Hell Right. Yeah I mean there's yes there's so many things that that this is this is why people in the NBA. One at least finish something right. Because there's so many questions left unanswered and so much more for for guys who like their stories aren't written yet. One thing that Adam brought up to me again in this interview last night is he said that there are players competing against father time which is a battle we know no one has won so when you talk about a part of you says oh. Cancel the season start again next year. Maybe it's in two years maybe eighteen months. Whatever it is that the health providers are telling us in this moment there were players where that is effectively. Gone and their careers in the most dramatic is. Of course Vince Carter. We saw him in. The final minutes raise inside was incredible. And maybe you know Gosh. I know he didn't get Dwayne Wade. Ask You know plans tribute final game where you can know about it. Three days going into it and all of that but just the moment and the organic nature of everybody standing and clapping and then him. Making the shot was so incredible. So that's that's the most dramatic rate but then think about some of the players from that these great draft glasses that we've had that we are the older statements basement of the League who only only have two or three more years left. We were just talking about Chris. Paul how much more we Chris? Paul be playing where this is a huge chunk of of the end of historian. He might not get it. Yeah and I don't know. Vince really wanted a the HOOPLA. I think that was that was part of the lingering like Vince not being a presence. At All Star I think was indicative of that Yeah and you bought the race for the eighth seed. Lucan porzingas together in the playoffs for the first time. What the hell are the rockets? GonNa end up being another up and down team but these are all these are all just US searching for creature comforts amid a much much bigger thing. And that's that's sort of that's sort of what I want to. I want I guess for me like I don't think having a twenty minute conversation about fun stuff about basketball and Gee we only saw Zion play however many eighteen games or whatever it was and what do you think that could be if he gets a full season. It's okay to have twenty minutes of that conversation. It doesn't mean that you don't care about people getting sick or I don't think people can spend twenty four hours a day only thinking about the things that make you anxious. I think it's okay to watch movies and I think it's okay to talk about sports and all the while keeping the perspective that we know what's important and what's most important. Is that the people on the front lines of this. Our health providers. The people have what they need. We can't predict the future. We can't predict with this virus can do. Unfortunately you've they just have not been able to save every life but there is a difference between the countries that have armed the doctors and nurses with the tools. They need to make people better and as long as we can do that and move toward that. It's okay to watch a movie. That's my thing and I hope I hope as Hope everyone cain everyone stays safe. And there's few people suffer from from this virus as possible. I also just the mental effects of this is GonNa have on people are scary and the isolation and the forget the mental effects linked to the economic disaster. That is coming and just you know like I think my daughter like how much development is she missing. How how can I fix that? You know how it's like. They're just it's just the anxiety. People feel crippling twenty four seven anxiety about their parents in their loved ones. That's GonNa take a toll on it. I just hope everyone does their their best to to ride this out and be okay. Because it's it's scary. I don't know what else to say really when you. Innate did not live through the Great Depression we did not live through World War Two so we we just have not grapple with something. I don't know what the end is. We don't know how this is going to happen. We do know that society came out of both of those things that's hopeful that society will come out of this and we do have some of the modern comforts that people in those times didn't have you mentioned face timing with your parents. And having them have the ability to see their grandchild That's just not something that would have existed. She very enthusiastically gave them a virtual tour of.

"Spirit. What'S THE NBA? Storyline that if the season is over and or sobre vacated that it feels like a fake season were were stored were storyline. Fix Strong where you feel like. You know all teams have this sort of organic journey that they go right. So the internal storylines organically resolved themselves. Or whenever what's what's what are the story lines that you feel yourself longing to be like. Oh man I feel like I watched a movie and I didn't watch the last thirty minutes where everything's going to be wrapped up or fall apart or end one way or another well. Let's say I mentioned a few minutes ago? It's not knowing right. So I love Superhero movies because I'm a giant Geek So I watch every marvel movie that comes out every DC comic movie that comes out every star wars everything all of that and I watch it because I love those little worlds that they build. I love the characters but I'm not kidding myself in the Spiderman movie. I know what happens at the end. Spiderman is going to win. That's how that works. And even you know even vendors and a cliffhanger at the ending of one movie but we knew how the next movie would go and how that cliffhanger would be resolved so I I think what sports offers us and what. I always find so fascinating. One of the reasons I wanted to do this for a living to my job is that you don't know what's going to happen. Rate You have heroes and villains in storylines ethnic clashes and you don't know who which team has spiderman in which team is is arch nemesis. You don't know that until the end and in the NBA for the last five years. We didn't know for sure who was GONNA win right. The warriors didn't win every title. But we certainly had an idea of what was gonNA happen toward the end of the season. We had four straight finals where it was the toussaint teams. We knew who was going to be there. We knew who the odds were stacked against it with. The most likely outcome was in for a little bit the NBA felt a little bit like one of those spiderman movies. I knew who was GONNA win? And for this season I n no idea who was GONNA win and I. I'm going to be so mad if I don't get the resolution of that because it really is a movie that you don't know the ending too and we're not gonna get it and that's that's the thing I'll miss the most you know what's good though. We can't be wrong like if I to win the championship. I think the clippers are the best team if they don't win a bit well it's just best. Three flu doesn't count. Of course there were the best team. Let me just go down and look. Let's just go down the line ready for Eastern Conference standings milwaukee. How does Janas look in the playoffs? I suspect that a lot of the is the MVP race or race. Talk with which I disagree. I don't really WANNA get into an MVP thing. Because I don't care right now I think this is the MVP. But I think a lot of the race is disarray. Stock stems from in some voters. Mind this sort of lingering feeling that Lebron's game translates better to the playoffs or will translate better to the twenty twenty playoffs the game and that sort of just colors. Everyone's perception of them as players. Even though every indicator says that one player has played better than another player this season. And by the way I don't think that's crazy or wrong to factor that into your voting. Because you can't help it and because that actually does matter if you want to translate or or like I understand. It's a regular season award. But if you think that and you have and there is reason to think that Lebron Lebron's multi Champignon. This is not like there are obvious reasons to think his game translates a little more cleanly to the postseason than Janas. Even though you honest has a chance to prove that wrong and that was the fun part that I miss like I think that's informing a lot of the perception that this is a close. Mvp race. And I don't think that's crazy or wrong. And and just not not getting a full shot of seeing Janas be able to do that is one of the things I will miss. You want to add anything. You want me to go right down my list. Well I just. You don't even have to get that far in the Howard. Their Games being the playoffs like you had another. Twenty Games of the season laughed. Jaanus got hurt and we thought it was a minor. Knee sprain right but what if it turned into something more serious? If you're honest missed the final twenty games of the season. Then it's a race then wrong wins then Lebron winds so so there you go like that. It doesn't have to be some complicated. How do you factor that in? Is it fair and postseason this season in whatever we didn't know how those final I don't remember eighteen games that the bucks had left weather? Janas was going to play in them or not and that was a real thing because he missed the last two so to me that is sort of where that great unknown of the MVP races. Because I agree with you honest. My youngest is my leader in the clubhouse. We've still got quarterback seasons ago and John is missing. That last quarter of the season would have been impactful. I think on the racing on people's votes don't you ado. I do Toronto I have not been this excited to watch team defend its title than the Raptors Autobahn. How much fun they've been and I don't think they would have won. I do think they had a punchers chance to come out of the east as I've said that before the one of my last podcast before all this happened was about the bucks in how I do. Think the bucks a win the east but I don't think there is sort of invulnerable as their record suggested I think. Toronto IS A LEGIT TORONTO. Just like Toronto just has it like when you win it real they have a swagger and a toughness and sort of like. I wrote this in a com a couple of weeks ago. When you've been through it together and you can look around at everyone around you and say I know that guy has it in the fourth quarter a championship game. I know that guy has it enact guy has it in a toughness isn't just like it's not just grit and physicality and like boxing. Out For rebound. It's it's it's knowing that I can fall. I have good instincts in the moment when I have a split second to decide whether the past or cut or drive and I'm going to make the right decision under pressure because I already did it and I know that guy will in that guy will not I will. There's such a power in that collective knowledge and confidence and they have it and I'm GonNa miss not seeing them and you're right. They've Been Fun Boston. Jason Tatum how? How real is it? I think it's pretty real. How real would it have been in the playoffs? I mean you could just go down the line of all this stuff going including our own depot apple. By the way who the Pacers. I wrote this in a column for the trade deadline. The Pacers and Victor Oladipo broached the subject of a contract extension before the season and agreed. Not Not now. Let's let's put it off. So like how does he look in the playoffs? How do they look in the playoffs? Sixers already got to Western Conference. I think L. A. L. A. It had a chance to be so special relics. Oh special to right from the beginning you live there. I don't I visit often because of you. The clippers right away. Lean so hard into the Anti Lakers of course and they can all down play. It's just a regular season game and when I know because I was out there in LA. Maybe a two weeks before Christmas or a week before Christmas and they both played separate games. Everybody on those teams would come up to you before an effort to game and say I know I know. We're publicly downplaying it. I can't wait for Christmas. I can't wait and it would have been awesome. Go you pick something now. I'm sorry I don't know. I think those are all good like the thing too. I was fascinated to see the logistics of that right because it would would have been the first time if those teams have met in the Western Conference finals. It would have been the first time we would have had two teams that share a building. Right I lived in New York. You lived in New York during the subway series. That was amazing with Major League insults. My worst sports moment in history sub. Please happy I could bring this up to you. Come on the mets. Were in the world series. How is that your worst moment game? One were in the world series. Since by definition time game one are Mono Benitez blowing that save which every met fan new was going to happen. Every met fan new In every new when you blew that save the series was over Just felt it that that a a essentially ended a relationship for me because I was so angry immature about it and be a I just. I've I've never been the same as a sports fan since that game. Ed Gutted me to a degree so thank you on my own podcast. I feel Armando girlfriend. That got dumb. Because of the mets come on. I don't I don't even really know who dumped to. Just there was there was just no one could once. That moment happened of like a twenty. What was I twenty. Two year old man or something storming out of a room like child slamming the door cursing about the mets. And how he hates like. There's just no going back from that you just there's no there's no. There's just nothing to be done anymore. Well I will say that while that was for people who might not have been mets fans that was a cool series to be able to see the Yankees a match playing each other. And we've had things like that before not in the same building rate so the idea that he would have in the same building. The Lakers and clippers going on it for the right to go to the NBA finals. And you've been in. La For those games. The Lakers fans by up the clippers seats so on one hand. Neither team has to travel there in their home. Locker rooms their around their families. There they have all the creature comforts of the workouts. They like to do. There's not that like cramp visitor's Locker Room in Boston or any of those other cities that Kinda purposely make the visitor's locker room unpleasant but then they would go out on the court. And if you're the clippers are you playing in effect? Seven awakenings no matter whether they're covering up the banners above you or not and whether it's technically whose true leaders get the stage the fans in the building. I I could not have waited to see what that would have looked like because I don't think we will have seen anything. Like it is bomber. GonNa fight someone like in game five to two and something bad happens to the clippers. You just GonNa fight a fan like a Laker Fan. But I don't know and by the way people who who here are excitement about la La will immediately say you're discounting everyone else in the West to things on that number one those teams I think a proven head and shoulders above everybody else in the West. The default assumptions should be that that is the conference finals number two. That doesn't mean I'm any less excited for any of the following things can Denver get it together after a shaky season for essentially everyone on the team. But you'll get you kinda will Barton. Utah has had the strangest season of every team in NBA up down. Conley starting injured off the bench starting again and they've just fine and then they go on a four-game you've been a four game winning streak right before this all shutdown. They finally had a bench unit. That started to produce. It makes sense. Are they going to get it together? Now they have all other sorts of chemistry questions answer under get to thunder. I WANNA see that. What what that's Oklahoma City? Are they just going to just have this pride of? Oh we're not supposed to be here like we were the throwaway team. Everyone was GONNA get traded. Guess what a were good. Be Tough the last game I saw in in the NBA. This year was thunder at Celtics on Sunday. Whatever that was March tenth through March eighth someday that existed and the thunder came back from double digits in the third quarter. The second quarter will the Celtics. One of those runs that home teams going relegates over. That's the game and they came back to win. Crispell had that stop on tatum. Late in the game and like a bunch of just like man that due to pain in the ASS Chris. Paul play like I turn. He got an offensive rebound and a free throw late in the game..

"There's so much news. That's like terrifying and shocking. But the medium-term is his is like strange and uncertain. And I don't know that were guaranteed like any N. B. I don't know like I don't know and look obviously there's more important parts of American life You know the election is supposed to be six or seven months. You've seen states right now. Postponing primaries you know is there going to be moved by one of the parties to postpone. The national presidential election is going to be moved to have the presidential election because of all of this You know I just saw that. The Governor of New Jersey enacted a moratorium that people cannot be kicked out of their houses for not paying the rent or there can be no foreclosures. I don't know how many states are going to enact that Are we going to be dealing with people who no longer have access to jobs and no longer have access to healthcare now no longer? Having access to homes. I mean there's so many big huge issues that the country is grappling with on one hand. It doesn't make sense to talk about any of this at all on the other hand you have a you know when it comes to basketball or Sports Banou hand you have people sitting at home trying to find a lens to deal with all this through and in some ways that sports or the NBA is their land. Yeah I do feel like very soon. We're GONNA reach a point at which chronicling the day to day of. Nba News feels almost stupid. Like Oh you know like Oh this person. This team tested had a disdain. Get tests in What's the latest plan that they're pitching in the League office for saving the playoffs or X Y and Z? I just feel like in a week like am I really gonNA Is Anyone devoting mental and emotional energy to those questions? I just don't I don't know I'm scared. I don't think I don't think so. I think I think we are GONNA move great. We're going to move away from that sort of day to day stuff and is going to move much more into being a Netflix version of sports. Right let me call that championship game. Let me let me go watch. That movie again. Might be here guys talk. You know who were involved. Talk about this game or something like that It will be much more featuring existence for the NBA and again. Some people are going to want that as an escapement. Some people are going to be like. I'm not interested. I'm turning on my cable news the whole time They really stats about cable. News that I think You know compared to this day last year Cable News shows or seventy five percent up in ratings but the flip side of that is that Twelve percent of homes tuned into some sort of cable news in some way. Cnn MSNBC Fox News. Yesterday that means eight percent homes didn't rate so that means there are people who clearly are interested in may be turning the news off for some time or maybe all the time and just kind of being with their families and thinking and talking about things if they can't control the big wide world of their they wanNA control you know what moves they watch and what sports they see and things like that and it. Is You know the old favorites that I think are gonNA come back a little bit more. I wonder how an NBA finals. I'm just making this up. Like people say this is under discussion. That's under discussion. Everything is under discussion. You couldn't pitch a crazy enough idea for how to salvage his Adams said last night the NBA season that it hasn't been discussed yet or that they would. They would refuse outright to discuss. I just wonder like how a best of three NBA finals with. No fans would feel like would we? Would we get excited for that and then arrive at it and be like boy this sucks? This is disappointing with the players. Be like with the players like feel inside themselves like yeah. We're trying to win the championship. But it just doesn't like it's like I. I know deep down that this is going to be like A. I hate the word ass risk but just like a championship that it's just it's just not going to count the same. It's not going to be the same. I just wonder as excited as we would be to have. That experience enhances basketball back. I wonder if they would have this sort of hollow like the no fans like the sound of it. The homecourt advantage of an even only rich people can go to the finals like it. Would it would just. I don't know how it would feel. You know there's part of me I don't really actually mean this but there is a part of me that's like let's just move on to next season. Let's just like let's just it's cleaner it's easier it like but I don't really feel that but there's like part of my soul that feels that a little bit. Well animus talking last night. He said that look he understands. Having Games without fans seems like an anathema to so many people exactly what you're talking about but his point was hey. Technology allows us to do all sorts of things you talked about American ingenuity and how things are invented in the time of crisis and that ninety nine percents of NBA fans don't ever get to watch an NBA game live but they are watching it on TV anyway and he you know spit out there he said. Hey maybe there's some technology that lets people you know shearer from their phone or their TV and that gets broadcast into the arena right and then everybody instead of having twenty thousand fans in the arena. It's you know two hundred million fans in the arena so to speak because that can get broadcast into the arena. He obviously again just throwing things out there. But I think if your standard is gonNA feel the same. The answer's no no. It will not feel the same. The answer is just no absolutely no nothing I think in this next year is GonNa feel the same and maybe longer than that I read that same report. Eighteen months But will be something that.

"Across from Staples Center in our La's studios so I'm able to just hop over there You know the Lakers and clippers hosting different teams coming in from other parts of the country. It's great you can come and catch up with guys. And maybe I'm setting up an interview with James Harden interview you mentioned. The rockets came in played the Lakers. Not that long before the All star break and I knew that I would You know we will be in the same place in Chicago for the All Star break and I might have an opportunity to sit down with him. so I went to talk to James and talk to the Houston. Pr Staffers Talk to some other people. to try to them groundwork and set that up and then of course. It's more than just that night. It's it's weeks years months of Covering James Harden and do another interviews with him and having confused feel like. He's been treated thoroughly enough that he's willing to take time to sit down and then she like again going to get an honest conversation out of nowhere when you're interviewing him and he says you know. I wish I was seven feet and I could just run into Dunkin. That takes no skill. How excited you get when you when you get a quote like that. I mean it's funny in the room and this is something I've learned over the years and you know this too because when you're interviewing someone and then you go back and look at. Your broker listened to the tape. Sometimes it plays differently right and in the room he said `and the best player in the NBA. We're definitely GONNA win a title to me. Those two things click is like this is what people are gonNA be talking about out of this interview and it was only later. I was like Oh yeah I took the Saudi honest there. And then you know as we as we did the edit. I was like yeah this is GonNa be also something people say I still think him saying. He thinks he's the best player in the NBA. He doesn't believe that he's not the top five on the NBA's MVP ladder and that they're deaf weren't GonNa win a title or all statements that many other people might argue with the youngest one is obviously the one that got Got a ton of the night before the interview went on TV. I actually reached out to the rockets James and said. Hey just you know. Here's here's what is coming tomorrow. Because again I. I don't think there's any value in Gotcha and I think that you know it. Just giving people a heads up Again with something even as controversial quote unquote or hard hitting CENA Mark Cuban interview. Everyone knew ahead of time including mark. Hamill asking you questions about Excellency. 'cause I just think it's a better way to do it. I honestly think you get better. Answer people if they feel prepared definitely wasn't a Gotcha. I mean Janas made the comments and you just he could have easily James Harden Veasley said to you. Listen you know He. That's his opinion entitled to it. I'm not worried about you. Know he he went out of his way to take the shot. Janas not only made the joke on broadcast that we refer to but after the All star Game Yonhap said they asked him about about their strategy down the stretch and he said you know we give the ball to whoever James Harden was girding so that goes goes both ways and Yannis is is a certainly knows what he's doing to as an adult and knows how to make little jabs when he wants to to. I think it's fun. I think it's all good to be. Neither Guy said anything that was so out of bounce. That was like you said that. It's just a good natured. Trash-talk both both sides were restricted. The Fun stuff that we'd love about again all right in New York and Chicago and and all those guys player crime is always going to do better than a guy predicting a title did you see by the way After all the Spike Lee drama that Reggie Miller posted bike? It's finally time to come up. I thought that was a phenomenal use of trash talk ends. That was that was Reggie. Reggie how to do that was that was. That was great. Do you for anyone listening today. I even myself. I'm always asking people tips for doing interviews a any any wisdom for anyone who does interviews any advice because it's a tricky thing when you you know you're you could be doing this for as many years you have been. You can have all the training. You could be doing all that. No the people but when you're sitting a foot away from Lebron James you know it's still you have a job to do their Any sort of advice or tips on interviews. I think the most interesting people to interview or people who are going through some sort of change rate so if someone is doing the same thing they've been doing for so long There's there's not as many good questions to ask them right and you can kind of go back through their catalog but You know I think I think finding people the interview where something is going on with them. It's a good start to have good interview. If you find some over the subject matters good and then also it's just about being legitimately curious There's so many times where I will have a base group of questions that I'm looking at and trying to figure out what I should actually ask when it once it gets today and stuff where I can look at the question and pretty much already know the answer of what the guy's GonNa say he's just GonNa say Axa. Say why I don't ask that question and I know some people feel like. Oh well you gotta get this subject in the interviews not complete without this subject being covered for me and it's just my opinion. I am not interested. I'm interested in stuff. I'm legitimately curious about the stuff I don't know and I think if you're asking those questions it's GonNa be a good interview It's GonNa be good interview for you certainly right to find out cool stuff and then you just have to hope. Other people are interested in some things you are. It's funny it's really funny that that was your answer because I do. I just had this conversation maybe twenty minutes before we jumped on this podcast with co workers. Because I'm going to be speaking to not for this podcast but for my column. Well maybe speaking of Joe Borough later this week and I was trying to figure out what to ask him and I'm going into like to ask him like. Do you want to play for the Bengals? I is like what's the point of that question. At this point. You know the answer. You're going to get. I'd like to play for anyone who drafts me to play in the NFL. So yes there's certainly people who asked that question. I don't begrudge that but for me I'd be more interested if you asked other stuff and you know it's funny you talk to the beginning of this pot about. Hey we've been talking for months about when we were going to actually do it and I said to you the very first time you each that's me. Hey let's wait until I'm starting to do they. Abc Games because again. That's a change for me right. I was doing the daily show. And then starting this year I'm doing these. Abc Saturday Primetime Games. I'm going to have this big world during the finals and You know it's fun to be able to talk about that stuff it's different. That's cool since you brought up the Saturday. Nba countdown. And I'M GONNA. I'm GonNa ask you a question where I know what your answer is going to be but I'll throw it out there. Well here. I'm going to start with you. Nba countdown Saturday nights. It's the junk jump right. It acts as the pre-game show for the Saturday night game. What IS THE PRE game? Show Yup absolutely so inevitably whenever this comes up. It's always you know the ESPN TNT comparisons. Because they have inside the NBA. Everyone who says you know legendary show iconic show if people go through the history of studio shows they say that's the best one college game day usually the first to mentioned when you even though it's the jump but when you were offered the Gig as as the to do the pre-game for the Saturday night did you have any trepidation. In terms of being compared to that show is can you even can even bother worrying about that. You just gotTa do what you do. Is there any Envy of that show. Wh What's there's always going to be comparison so now you're in that slot so what's your take on that. I don't think there are direct comparisons only because you know most of inside the NBA is a post game show They sometimes have ten or fifteen minutes pre-game sometimes during some playoff weeks that expands longer. Or if they you know. There's a core commodity schedule and I'm apologizing upfront. Because they don't know how many times a year they get our the half hour but I do know from working. Tnt for three years We were I would get interviews and say when can they air air pre game and they'd be like well the only got eight minutes pre-game. It's really were post game show. And that's the lion's share again. I don't have the proportions. But it's the lion share of inside the NBA is post game show and this is a totally different show right. It's a loose one. Am environment you're reacting off. What happened in the Games? It's just a different thing. it's also mostly in the studio inside the TNT. They go on the road during the playoffs. They're on the road. I think during All-star but it's largely in the studio and for ABC. Saturday night. One of the great concepts that I was so excited about taking the some unpleasant was not only going to get to be the jump so it was gonna have our flavor And our tone and sort of what we I think sort of jump brings to the NBA Conversation. Which is something. I really like in addition to our NBA countdown or inside the NBA. Brace of the conversation which cool things But also it was going to be onsite and Connor. Shell and Jimmy Ktar when they talk to me about this. They really wanted to have that feel that I kind of call it A mix between the old Monday night football feel of you never know who's GonNa drop by the booth and trl enough of a mix of references. I love that reference big Ali Fan. Yeah because because that's kind of what we want and some weeks you know. It's it's kind of who you'd expect to come on but some weeks it's really random and You know we had Travis Scott Puff on in in Houston which makes sense for that game and that market When we were in Philadelphia Joel embiid wasn't playing so he was injured so he came on the show. And Alan Iverson came on the show. Because I think Alan Iverson our greatest living American and patron saint of all NBA players..

"I worked at the Washington Post for almost a decade and everything that meant from the grounding I got from the phenomenal editors George Salomon to working when I was I was twenty one years old. And there was Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser and Christine Brennan and Thomas Boswell an and Jubair and those are the people I went to work and saw every day and they're just legends in the Journalism Sports Journalism Business So so being able to learn. Have that grounding in really doing things that were always me about doing things. The Right Way Being a beat reporter which by the way I hated and do when I got out of journalism school because I was like I want to raise future. I WANNA do projects I WANNA know. Whatever and I had very smart people older than me. Who Said Kid you know? Go learn covering a beat is lake so you can know how to develop relationships over the course of a year where you have to both the liver and cover the tough stories. Ask the hard questions but also be able to come back the next day and be responsible for what you say and right so that you can feel that even if it's something someone didn't like you were fair and and that way you can sort of face them the next day and that's an important part of what I do right now also. I learned to write on deadline. I was a hockey writer at the Washington Post. They started out you write a deadline story where the score is one zero. That's running that you have to file as soon as the game ends before you can get any quotes and by the way. Can you give me twenty inches on that You definitely learn to do things quickly and in a different way and that really helped me to with the writing. I do every day on the show right and some of it is as I said breaking news and I'm writing in the commercial breaks or I'm writing up until the last second because to me. That's just that's just daily practice. Because I did it for years interviewing something sort of big picture stuff is something. I did insert later jobs When I was working for. Espn making that transition to television. There's a lot of how do I bring my writing skills to TV? Which is something that is a big part of the job may be more so than some of the other shows Eddie. Espn it was covering the big picture league stuff like the NBA. The NFL the weekly Games. That I did to the NFL. Where I would do start for sports center and I was just talking about this with some of our producers the other day You know they were years. I was based out of New York where there'd be big football games right and it would be a giants cowboys game. Jimmy remember giants. Cowboys was a big matchup. Right I do. I do comparing it to the Knicks. Though the giants cowboys is still a big deal in New York. I'll say all right so anyway but yeah so I'd be stationed out a giants for a week. Right and Edward or would be stationed a cowboys for a week. And we'd spend a week finally daily stories to sportscenter about like. Oh here's the Eli manning versus the cowboys. Db's matchup for something. Like that. And then it would just be this. You know sort of built this blockbuster. Game on Sunday now in those examples. Fox's getting the rating bright for that game but we're talking about how we can kind of use the jump to build some of the storylines that will go into our Saturday night games right something like that. So little bit is like building these storylines of the NBA and my experience in that coming in When I left. Espn to go to Turner and CNN. my own show on CNN and CNN obviously is not as heavy a sports network in fact obviously news network had Topic specific shows so Sanjay Gupta had health show and I I had a sports show and crossfire was sort of the more heavy politics. Show as opposed to just news information and stuff like that There's an entertainment show that like that But it was still trying to deliver that to a CNN. So during that time it was a lot of. Hey can you translate this issue to give it the larger context in society? What is this really about right? What does it mean? What sort of the larger conversation going on here whether it's something as straightforward as the bring rice relation which is obviously about domestic violence and kind of how we treat women and children and laws and and who to believe in and all of that in our society to You know things that were simpler sort of more fun raid on Sports. Is this big tent. We all gather in not. Everybody watches the same movies anymore the same TV shows but sports we a lot of US watch the same. Sporting events took wait praise to have all these conversations. We do that on the jump on the sideline reporter TNT and got to be part of those broadcasts around the inside the NBA guys and sometimes jump on that show or sometimes jump in host on NBA TV and a very different perspective than ESPN Da much looser right. Show show ethos that. They subscribed raid. They have less tight to the rundown about discussion More about letting things just sort of go in crazy directions. Obviously if you have Shaquille O'Neal Charles Berkeley you have to subscribe. But it was definitely education for me right and then also you know the value of big personalities and and getting to sort of really take people inside where it was like for those players and people and all of those different things for all of those different years. I mean I've been covering the am one way or another two decades. I've had nearly every job there is to have bring the NBA We get to do now on the jump and it Kinda makes us Nimble enough that You know when the when the Dallas Mavericks situation went down and I had spent months sort of talking on and off the Mark Cuban about doing an interview I was ready to do that interview and I got the report. I think. Two hours before the Interview so it was really just and it was a I. I don't have a number in front of me but it was dozens and dozens of pages of legal stuff to go through And again that kind of went back to my hard news. Journalism background of highlighting circling. And all of that and being able to on the fly over the course of an hour to me really felt like a parse a lot of the stuff that was going on in that with Mark Cuban and made it in an interview that Soak into me. Because I had some of the women in The Dallas Mavericks Organization. Come back to the afterward and honestly of all the people of all the reactions that was one of the most meaningful because they just said. Hey you ask the questions. We've been trying to ask for years and so being able to do that was great. Also being able to show all about the most disrespectful dunks of all time is awesome and feeds into my sense of humor and things that I wanna do and stuff that I really encourage the staff. We have goofy photoshop. We have all of that stuff to me is what's so much fun about sports and fun about the NBA. You mentioned being distracted by from Corona virus and Super Tuesday. People are looking for that. I'm looking for that so I'm weren't that stuff in there too. So the fact that we've been able to dislike crazy stew is a very long answer to your short question but I do consider myself a little bit of everything in the show a little bit of everything and it's a fun way to sort of put a bow on all the stuff that I spent years.
"rachel nichols" Discussed on SI Media Podcast
"We taped one on Monday with Andrew. Marchena The New York Post to break down the Tony Romo Contract Tony staying with CBS NOT GOING ESPN. So if you haven't listened to that you can dip into the archives and check that out this episode features an interview with ESPN's Rachel Nichols and We talked to her about hosting the jump in a variety of topics including the Spike Lee. New York Knicks feud and interview process and several other things so Tony Romo podcast from Monday. We taped it is out in the archives and then This episode here Rachel Nichols will get into it. Right now on the media. Podcast you joining me now. I guess that's been in the works for a long time and we are finally doing it from ESPN's the jump. Rachel Nichols Rachel. How are you thank you so much for having me my pleasure like I said we? We've been going back and forth on this for a long time. I'm glad it's so funny because I actually saw a tweet from you yesterday. That kind of took too. I was taken aback by it when you said that there's only six weeks left basically in the NBA season that little by right the NBA season. I think now is what four hundred days out of the three hundred sixty five days a year. It's always said we got through six the regular season as you and I talk. I feel like the jump has contributed a little bit to the fact that the has now like you said four hundred days a year. 'cause you you know in the off season when there's free agency and Trades and trash-talking and all that stuff going on you guys are there and you're getting all the people that fans WanNa hear from for sure so we've kind of grown together. When the show started it was supposed to be a seasonal show and in fact our first season it was a seasonal show. Just sort of from a little bit before training camp to a little bit after. I don't even remember. I don't think we went into free agency. I think it was a little bit after the draft. I'd have to look back to double check. But that's my memory and then of course now you couldn't do basketball shorts. You didn't include free agency in Yeah I think it's all kind of cyclical there was more going on. We did more that may have created a low more disgusting. There you go did you did you know. Did you think the jump would be as popular as it's been obviously like you said it has grown and I think it's become one of those shows that fans really enjoy But did you expect it to become what it's become honestly? I'm so excited when I hear someone like you say it's popular people are watching it because when you're doing it you're just sort of in the studio right or maybe sometimes a games in your in your little world or bubble of Reno or any all these places that I've spent the last two decades and sometimes it's hard to tell It resonates a lot in my little bubble because I talked to basketball players all day. But it's it's sometimes hard to tell how much it sort of hanging out with the radar to the outside world so I get excited every time we get a little hint from someone that that it is making an impact beyond our circle obviously producers you have co hosts You're the face of the show. How much say do you have in the show? Are you a big part of the planning? And the what goes into. You know who you're going to have on interviews ordeal leave that up to the producers. How much hands in it. Yeah No. It's a big team effort and we all have a big say because we're kind of small group The show really has grown from something pretty small. We were a.
Lakers' NBA Cares event in Shanghai canceled
"The commissioner was going to go to Shanghai events have been canceled I don't know if the Lakers in nets are going to plug banners are coming down Rachel Nichols from ESPN has done a great job over there and she had some photographs of banners being taken down the rockets logo on the basketball floor heated over I don't know where we're headed I don't know if if this is bill getting towards the end or maybe you were right in the middle of this Adam silver the commissioner he is it feels like it if you were going to do one of those editorial cartoons he'd write beat be right at the great wall in just holding it with two hands trying to hold it up that's what it feels like right now and you're trying to pacify everybody here your try to check all the boxes you don't want to upset anybody you're just trying to get out of there you know this started as a perfect storm so you have Daryl Morey the rockets GM who tweets support of Hong Kong now this is before the trip and then all of a sudden end in let's say this is the GM of the Cavaliers I don't think this is going to be a big issue but the rockets are going the rockets are Chinese team the former rocket yell being head of China's basketball league lebron's flying over commissioners flying on and here we are I don't know what all that means but I'm sure that Adam silver is just hoping that let's just get out with any further damage here here is the commissioner trying to find mutual respect in China it's my hope that when I'm in Shanghai I can meet with the appropriate officials and discuss where we stand and again put those remarks from Daryl Morey and my remarks in an appropriate context of a many decades long relationship and see if we can find mutual respect for each other's political systems and beliefs thanks to the commissioner he also regrets the situation we are not apologizing for Darryl exercising his freedom of expression I regret again having communicated directly with many friends in China that so many people are upset including millions and millions of our fans hi this is what I don't understand what does China want now they want an apology and what are they telling what other citizens finding out like like how is that this being translated what is the coverage like because if you're a communist country do you mean okay are you embarrassed is that what it is that did you been embarrassed by what has been said about Hong Kong and what are your yeah these citizens so you're gonna take the will take away the NBA does then your your citizens ago why you're taking away the NBA I don't I don't know how it's translated to them el what the coverages like with the communist country here and what if the NBA just says Hey there's only one NBA deal with it you know we had somebody who made comments this is how he felt and you know what we want to be great partners with you but I understand this is who we are hello we believe in capitalism we we believe in freedom of speech and we can still be partners here we just don't agree politically yes right that's what I was saying yesterday about this in the NBA have more leverage here to say okay then don't take our product I mean they have a product that's highly valued in China that's why they're making so much money off of it is because people they're consuming it at an unbelievable rate and there's power to that there's real leverage that you can use that not that being said it's a hell of a bold step to take but you can right now you're getting absolutely destroyed in this discussion here getting crashed here's the commissioner telling us that he's not here to tell everybody how to govern I don't come here sort of either as the commissioner of the NBA is an American certainly to tell others how they should run their governments I I think though at the end of the day though I am an American and there are these values that are deeply rooted in the DNA of the NBA and that includes freedom of expression for our employees and I I'm I'm hoping that together Yang Ming and I can find an accommodation yeah I understand it now you're tiptoeing find an accommodation okay that means can we go back to business here can we put all this to the side here can we just go back to acting like this wasn't an issue already anyway and just go back to making money that is the naive days yeah can we go back to acting like we don't care how you treat your people you ever try to remember what we used to just push that all under the rug and just act like it wasn't a thing let's just go back to doing that sorry about the tweet move on buy
NBA working on relationship with China after controversial tweet
"Lakers are in China Darren Shanghai right now they're gonNA play a game there Thursday morning early our time four thirty our time and then they're gonNA play another game Saturday in Chins in but there is a lot of controversy swirling around something more the rockets GM tweeted last week it would be would it be misleading to say things have calmed down but Adam silver's over there he's in Shanghai he's attempting to deal with it and it's hard to say if it's down or not the original Durham won't Daryl Morey tweet fight for freedom stand with Hong Kong and China and when I say China it's not just the government it's it's actual NBA Fans in China have responded and said they basically cancelled the Houston Rockets. Yeah I which I don't know that's fair enough but it's it's realistic they really have they shut down the Houston Rockets The Houston Rockets have been the heritage beloved team in China going back to Yao. Ming and that tweet is unbelievably incendiary in Hong Kong there's a separatist movement movement and the Chinese are and when I say the Chinese it's not just the government Chinese citizens an NBA fans in China are dead set opposed that separatist movement and so it's caused a gigantic controversy here's a little bit of what Adam Silver said about it this afternoon. CCTV announced that because of my remarks supporting Daryl Mores freedom of expression not the since of his statement but his freedom of expression they were no longer going to air the Lakers Nets preseason games that are scheduled for later this week a and it's not something we expected to happen I think it's unfortunate but if that's the the consequences of US adhering to our values we still feel it's critically important we adhere to those values my plan long has been to travel to Shanghai tomorrow and I plan to attend the Lakers Nets game Thursday night it's my hope that when I'm in Shanghai I can meet with the appropriate officials and discuss where we stand and again put those remarks from Daryl Morey and my remarks in an appropriate context of a many decades long relationship and see if we can find mutual respect for each other's political systems and beliefs but I'm a realist as well recognize that this is this this issue may not die down so quickly Daryl Morey has apologized actually James Harden also made this state apologize you know we love China we love playing near I know for both of us individually we go there wants to twice a year they show the most important love so now we appreciate as a fan base and we love everything you know they're about in in no way appreciate the support that they give us individually and as an organization so You know we love you if you're wondering why Adam Silver has is kind of taken the position that he has he is he's issued a couple of statements this was too and and you know to give us a little more background Shanghai is fifteen hours ahead of us so it's tomorrow morning in Chiang it's Wednesday morning Adam Silver's already there and he's hoping to have those meetings today in his statement that he issued on Tuesday when he was in Japan he said the NBA will not put itself in a position of regulating what players employees seasoned team owners say or will not say on these issues we simply could not operate that way so he is standing up one hundred percent for not necessarily anything Darryl said or tweeted specifically but for his right to say it yes in in that's why and then as you point out there are many many people's very upset in China and we'll see what happens next but you know Michael and I are hoping touring the Games a Thursday morning and Saturday morning it'll be four thirty am both days if you want to get up early you can listen to us or we're going to simulcast those those our call on spectrum sports net too so we're just waiting to see what happens next in the story but we're looking forward to doing those games I said earlier in the show it one thing I've learned about sports and you understand this steve better than most people because you've covered so many Olympics is sports can be a great unifier it really can it can bring people together you can you can see people jumping up and down and hugging each other we don't even speak the same languages so I I'm hoping we can play the games we can bring him to you and that cooler heads will prevail but we'll see we'll see yeah there's a lot of upset people here is Rachel Nichols who's actually in China the conflict with China top of mind for the League office the NBA is actually facing backlash on both sides here they're facing backlash from those who support the anti-government protesters in Hong Kong who feel that silver hasn't gone far enough to support rockets GM Daryl Morey but they're also facing backlash inside China from those who feel that silver has not gone far enough to condemn what more he actually said one of the loudest voices in that WHO's actually hall of Famer Yao-ming who is now the chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association Yao is one of the people but silver is hoping to meet with when he gets to China which will be on Wednesday yeah he sort of he's taking heat from both sides now sober both from both from people think he didn't go far enough to support Daryl Morey and people in China who think he didn't go far enough in condemning them here's Doc rivers this is new uh-huh doc rivers talking about what's going on with the NBA in China hit for saying what we believe we did as we disagree disagree I disagree with everything you say I have the right to do that and I have the right to Silverstone Tom and that's good that's good that's what this is about freedom of speech and and we should always have who consequences for what you say and that's why we get back to the Lincoln Body before you say there could be possibly and that's by the way what we're seeing we're seeing enormous consequences for Daryl Morey exercise his freedom speech and as of now Darryl still the GM of the rockets tillman for t- to the owner of the rockets came out right away soon as Daryl tweeted that and said he doesn't speak with Iraq it's he doesn't speak for the NBA. I have no problem with Daryl does her his personal views I don't think they're gonNA lose his job over this we we shared with you earlier in the show if you don't listen to US regularly we uh-huh Darryl he's been a guest on this show probably ten times he's one of the reasons he's crazy we'll talk about anything and so Adam standing behind him and saying look whether you agree with what Tara said or not he has the right to say it I think probably means I was going to hang onto his GIG but I'm speculating I don't know yeah a lot of that came up over the weekend and it seemed to calm down a little bit but again this story is continuing to unfold and we don't exactly know how it's going to turn out when all is said and done what will the relationship between China Chinese fans in the Houston Rockets be what will the relationship between China Chinese fans in the NBA be how will the be altered how will that be changed in any way we don't exactly know where it seems to me the one of the things that will be important as if Adam silver can sit down with the Ming who is a great ambassador for Basketball Chairman of Chinese basketball so that could go a long way in mending the damage that has been
NBA boss Adam Silver addresses China tweet controversy
"It NBA commissioner Adam silver's spoken regarding controversy caused as a result of rockets general manager Daryl Morey's tweet supporting Hong Kong that caused outrage from China remember the NBA's in China was set to dedicated to learn and play center in Shanghai is part of the NBA cares program that event was canceled by China's education department on Tuesday afternoon local time according to ESPN's Rachel Nichols this is commissioner Adam silver and what he said yesterday
Pelicans win No. 1 pick in 2019 NBA Draft
"Though, we had the NBA draft lottery. Elegant had the seventh. Best odds to win the lottery, but they come out on top. ESPN Rachel Nichols host to the jump. Nobody knew what was going to happen before we started reading off the names because hey, we knew this draft lottery was the most unpredictable they have ever held an NBA history. But the fact that everything went to chaos right away. And you had the Knicks and Lakers in the mix and the final four. But then they're not even the ones who get the top two picks the top pick to New Orleans. Pelicans zion. Williamson is now not only the beginning of changing for that team. He is going to be a valuable chip for GM David Griffin to try to use to keep Anthony Davis there. Here's why push back on that. Anthony Davis himself was a number one pick, and you know, the land the land here the guy wants out of town. He's been with an organization he doesn't think can win. I get designs a nice piece, but Davis has been that piece himself. Why would that change his opinion that I wanna go play somewhere else? Well, you're right. I mean, this is a guy who were that's all folks shirt his last game. So we know where his mindset is. However, they have made some changes to management there does really like coach Alvin gentry the fact that they are bringing in help in the shape of Zion. Williamson they hope is enough to convince him. Hey, why don't you just play out the rest of the year here? He doesn't control where he goes next. He can ask her trade, but they trade him anywhere, Scott and David Griffin can look at him and say, I'm in charge, and I'm gonna make things better for you than I if it works. We all exist in this space where we we see that people trafficking conspiracy theories in the Nixon the Lakers ended up with some version of one into the world would have freaked out. They end up getting at all. And as it turns out that three teams at the best chances that tried the least in the Knicks and the Cavs and the Suns three five six you can get nice players. But this is the least conspiracy slash rig kind of an outcome. We could possibly have gotten him, right? It's also a clear message to the entire league saying, hey tanking is not your ticket to attornal happiness. If you put on a badge show, it will in no way guarantee, you that good things are gonna happen down the road. We want teams that aren't good teams to get better. But not in that way. And I think that message was loud and clear tonight last quick thought, and all all these things are sort of seeing through the prism of Ziyad. And I I have to push back remind myself, he's still a kid. I know he looks like he's a young man. It was there any read as this plays out any realizes. Okay. It's New Orleans that's likely where I'm going to go. Are there any any read of like, okay? How did he react to that? At all. Yeah. I mean to me he kind of looked like he'd been hit by a truck. I understand that. When he woke up this morning Orleans was not what he was thinking. Maybe I'll have some as I actually got a chance to chat with him a little bit before all started. This is a kid who has such calmness about him. He is ready for the moment. And I'm sure once he resets his mindset to think. Okay, Norlin he's gonna say Benue sound pretty good. Let's see what happens next. They are. But you got you gotta be careful those I got reckless with some venues, it'll put you in a bad
New Orleans Pelicans land top NBA draft lottery pick
"Though, we had the NBA draft lottery. Pelicans had the seventh. Best odds to win the lottery, but they come out on top. ESPN's? Rachel Nichols, host of the jump. Harden says streak reflects necessity of situation
"Meanwhile, James harden says necessity is really the root of the storage storing scoring streak stressing that the rockets have needed him to go on this run that hasn't chasing will chamber hard to scored at least thirty points in thirty one straight games tying will still the second longest active streak in NBA history. Also, the all time leader is will Chamberlain with sixty five straight games. But he said this in his interview with Rachel Nichols on the jump in. Here is part of that. From James harden, especially now seem double teams I've seen triple us zones. Literally guys and trying to get the ball. But I mean, it's not like the scoresheet. This is something I have had to do because of our situation. We had all the guys lineups and things like that. So I think the street just starting. Have something to talk about. But it's not something that I'm really honestly focused on. Like to do in order to give us a chance to win the game. While I listen, we've heard Kobe Bryant about another former players come out and said, it's cool. What he what he's doing a lot of that is out of necessity which can't win a championship that way. The only thing I will say there was the one game they won by like what sixteen points and he needed eleven points like later in that game like in the fourth quarter to get the thirty. And he had he had the sore shoulders. Well, interesting how he stayed in that game. You know to make sure you've got the thirty to keep that going when they
Kevin Durant: 'I Just Don't Trust' Media; 'I Have Nothing to Do with the Knicks'
"Well, we're talking a lot about Kevin Durant. And what happened last night Durant had not spoken to the media for eight days that ended last night the warriors smoked the San Antonio Spurs. And after the game Durant sat down and spoke with or you might wanna say spoke to the media here was Durant. Pushing back at a column in the ass by Ethan shrouds. You gotta do Ethan Strauss who come in here. Yeah. Just give his whole opinion on stuff and make it seem like it's coming from me. And he just walking around here. Don't talk to nobody just walk in here. And survey is something like that. And now. Yeah, pollen on me because I don't wanna talk to you about that nothing to do with the Knicks don't know who traded porzingas. I got nothing to do. With me. I'm trying to play basketball coming here. Every day actually about free agency is my teammates. My coaches roundup the fans about it. Let us play basketball that's all along sand. And now I wanna talk to you is a problem with me. Woman grow up. Yeah. You grow up. Moreover, I come here and go to work every day on 'cause no problems. I played it right away or try to play the right way. Try to be the best player can be every possession. What's the problem? What am I doing here until the grow up part? I think people would have listened to that and said he's mostly being reflective, and he's trying to figure out how to handle this tough situation that he's in with everybody talking about New York and him being a Nick. But then when he says grow up, and he says, yeah, you and he's literally talking to one individual, which is Ethan Strauss. That's a little condescending. And that's anger. And that's obviously frustration coming through in Durant. Just sounds awful, especially when he gets to that point of that comment. But he he wasn't finished here. He is on why he avoided speaking to the media. Why do I gotta talk to you? Tell me is that going to help me do my job better. Talk. I just don't trust time. Anytime. I say something is get twisted up and throwing out in so many different publications. Tried to tell me down my words, I say so when I don't say nothing surprising. I just want to play ball. I want to go to the gym and go home. That's all that a problem. I mean, how are you planning house a team plane? I'm done. Don't care about that. I just asked you. I laugh every time. I hear that the ending of that, you know, you don't care about that. I just asked you and good night storms off defensive angry. And I understand why he's frustrated I truly do when your name is all over the internet and all over Twitter and people are talking about what you intend to do. And how you feel without you telling people specifically what you intend to do. And how you feel it can be frustrating, but the defensiveness and the anger doesn't help. And let's remember that Durant. He's part of the problem as to why this drama exists in the NBA when he decided to go to Golden State. He helped this move along. This is not going to end. It's not going to go away. Reporters are going to continue to do their job. They're going to continue to talk to people ask questions. Ask durant. The tough questions. And his job is primarily basketball. But when you're the face of a franchise. He's one of many and Golden State. He would be the face if he goes to New York. Yeah. It's part of the job. It's part of your responsibility to have to answer some questions in every once in a while at least every once in a while, it's not going to be just about basketball. So that's Katie last night. The other NBA soap opera is of course, Anthony Davis. And where he's going to end up the trading deadline in the NBA is now just under ten hours away, three PM eastern standard time. We'll find out if Davis is still a pelican or not. And when I look at this situation between New Orleans and LA, I believe and this has been my belief from the very beginning this entire Davis to Lakers scenario was first created and then pushed by clutch sports, Rich, Paul and LeBron James. Lebron James is one hundred percent calculated some people try to act as if he is almost naive to some of these things he's not he's calculated. He understands he went back to Cleveland because he knew Cleveland had the pick that they needed to move to Minnesota to bring in Kevin love. He knew going back to Cleveland. He would be part of a super team. Kyrie Irving was already there. He knew how things were set up that they would be able to get love. And he understood that a LeBron Kevin love and Kyrie Irving trio would do some damage in the Eastern Conference. He also understood what was happening when he made his decision when he went to Miami. He's always making calculated decisions. There's nothing wrong with that. He's meticulous. He's methodical. And he's well thought out. So if you think LeBron had no part of this whole story, then I think actually you're the one being naive. He's cal. Rich Paul is calculated. And when you look at the timeline, it all makes sense, right? There was that dinner between Davis and LeBron then you add kyri publicly apologized to LeBron. Then LeBron goes on social media, literally singing, his heart out. It's a Kyrie Irving. Then you have all the Irving. Rumors. Oh, he might want to go to LA. You might want to go to New York. Then you have Davis come out with his list of teams his preferred destinations with really only one team with the assets that can make a deal which oh just happened to be the Los Angeles Lakers. And then the other night you had bench gate that was fun. Lebron has three chairs in between him. What's happening who should he move close to his teammates should one of his teammates move close to him? Where's Rajon Rondo sitting? It's been calculated by LeBron and clutch sports to get Davis to L A. And that's just it's obvious. But this off court game has not been one-sided. Here's Rachel Nichols. And Brian Windhorst discussing an interesting theory on ESPN's, the jump do you think that they were upset enough? I have no knowledge. I'm just throwing out a question that they were upset enough with what they have made clear they felt like was tampering and they felt like they were going into reach in after their player, and 'cause all this disruption in the middle of the season when they thought they had at least to this summertime. Do you think that they never intended to really engage with the Lakers that much? I kept putting out publicly all these trade offers. So that we saw last night it would ruin their team chemistry at least temporarily disrupt all their young guys make things miserable for this team. Is that possible? It's such as possible. It's what happened. I know that the pelicans put us let's go now the pelicans had a method to their madness. And the way this went. I love that theory take that theory injected into my veins, I love that theory from Rachel Nichols. The pelicans were upset about the tampering. So they set their part of this whole thing up saying, yeah, you know, we'll entertain a trait. Sure. Give us a call magic. Magic calls them every single time. He calls them New Orleans. Del damps the GM says nine not enough. But I'll give you this not enough. But I'll give you this not enough. How about this? No, thanks. Okay. Well, I'll I'll I'll also throw in this. I need more magic. I need more. I love that theory. Love it to try to get into the fabric of the Lakers in bother their youth. That's that's a juicy theory. And if it's true in Windhorst knows an awful lot as we know that it means that both of these teams are throwing food at each other. We we have a food fight west coast, east coast or more, you know, southeast throwing food across the country at each other right hotdogs hamburgers getting tossed, but the critical question the most important question. No matter how you feel about the drama who started the drama who continued the drama what if LA doesn't get Anthony Davis. What happens then? What if all this work by clutch, sports, and LeBron fails what if Davis stays in New Orleans what if Davis gets dealt to Boston on July first because Boston decides to trade Jason Tatum? What if
"rachel nichols" Discussed on Pardon My Take
"We now. Welcome on one of our favorite recurring guests, it is host of the jump on ESPN. Rachel nichols. Thank you for joining us and. I just it's been so long that we were just saying beforehand like it's you've lived a whole Jimmy Butler, experience and bang. Speaking spoken to you four we jump into that real quick. I wanna get I wanna get an update. The last time we talked to you was back in the spring. When Bill Walton stolen of your pictures off your wall has he returned that. Not. And because he is irreplaceable. The photo is replaceable or our show has no budget. I can't decide which it is nothing has been put on the wall. I did make him. I tell you sign the wall where he was like, we gotta leave something there. And that has just been there. I will say we were able to get a couple of those like potted point setters for the set is it point setup Setia. I want people listening to know it's Christmas. Because apparently, that's how every television show tells you it's Christmas. Dammit, we have points that a no photo back in the spot the Bill at the photo. But we have said so clearly work it put a frame around. But yeah, let the cast about Jimmy Butler because we talked about it a lot when it happened, but we didn't have young. And the biggest question is. I mean, obviously, it all it was all kind of a whirlwind. And you went interviewed him in Minnesota. And before you interviewed him he did his on the alpha. You guys need me to win practice. Did you did you feel at any point? Like he was using your ESPN to like get his weird message out there. It was just such a weird story. Here's their whole canal. Gee, what happens? So we I'm Jimmy since his rookie year. We talk a lot. We had talked through the summer. And of course, the story leaks out that he wants to trade and the first thing. I do because I'm the big J journalist check with him. Hey, Jimmy, come on. Joe talk about this. Not yet not yet. And we talk a few more time sort of through the following week. Jimmy wanna come out and publicly talk about this not yet not yet. So the week before all that happened. He was actually in Los Angeles. And we had talked about him coming to the set the jump and actually coming on the show on Thursday. We had started to have that set up. And then as that was the night before his agent kind of win that they were talking about trade to Miami. Right. And if you look back like that's where that whole talk heated up that he was gonna get traded to Miami. And they're like we don't want to come on the set if the trait happens, and we don't want to do anything to ruin it. And it got to the point where over the weekend of that that weekend. There was it was so hot and heavy. It was kind of big before like, oh, all they're doing their necks changing medicals deals almost done and then the deal falls apart rate. So by Sunday morning deal falling apart and Jimmy goes bras back in Minnesota and Monday. Hey, I guess he needs with kids in Minnesota. And that they feel like I'm not trading. You you're gonna have to come back to practice. We're gonna stop calling this like what do they call it? The first couple of weeks his training camp like hand injury or something recovering. Right. So basically by Monday afternoon or evening, you know, this whole process, right? I have been checking in with me. Like, hey, are we gonna come down and interview and Miami like what are what are we going to do this because he hasn't spoken publicly at all since the spring since the wolves have been eliminated from the playoffs..
