"You know crap bar and order fried potato skins so they include the skins. You go to a steakhouse or someplace that they're overcharging for whatever right and they just eat the inside of the potato touch the skin though. I I just don't get it. Yeah okay. Do you always need assault. Your water before boiling. It never knew always saltwater after you boil it you never add salt water before you boil. At least I don't because it can scar your pots. I use core salt or kosher salt and when you put heavy salt into boiling water it dissipates. It gets melted before it hits the bottom. You put into cold water drops to the bottom. It will break down but it can also Scott. Your pots depends on what type of pot you're using but it's just a habit. I only copiously salt the water that I'm cooking once it's to a full rapid boil and I always save the salty water right before you drain or remove the Pasta to your sauce. It is essential to heap HALF A. Mago about three quarters of a cup of that water. It's what Mary's the Pasta to the sauce and always undercooked pasta by at least one minute because of carry over cooking in continues to cook while you're marrying the positive sauce. I know this stuff. This law this is known as the Pasta water. I always like Scuba Cup drain. Hey Kids if you're listening to my pastas about to get so much cooking. Okay rinsing chicken before cooking. Necessarily I mean if you're chickens smells you have a rotten chicken. Chicken is one of those things I buy fresh from my butcher I don't know what spreading poultry juice around your sink in kitchen counter is doing for you. I typically do not if it is a Thanksgiving Turkey or very large bird yes I would give the cavity a check if it needed a ransom there's a little bit of Gizzard or injured. Left in there if it serves a purpose certainly generally speaking no. I'm pretty good to go. Okay does cooking remove nutrients from vegetables depends on how long you cook something? I mean if you cook something till it's dead. And Yeah you are you are depleting its nutritional value. You never going to negate it. I mean a vegetable and fruit. They're always going to give you the nutrients and lots of fiber and they're good for you whether you like canned vegetables or not is up to you. The the the fresher you can keep food the more nutrient densities. But that doesn't make it unimportant and it will still be of great nutritional value even once it's cooked. I mean in telling people eat a lot of overcooked. Green beans in my weight depends on if you live in the country or the city you know if you live in the city. Things are cooked tender crisp and more trendy if you live in the country things to be cooked a little longer. You know 'cause it's about the crock pot in the slow cooker the braise or you were out working all day and you had to leave things on the stove literally all day but look eating. Fruits and vegetables is great for you and then honestly I think that the argument about the amount of nutrition. That's lost a little BS. I really do. I mean it's it's just good for you. Eat more fruits and vegetables period. Eight lots of color period. I mean are we really going to? You should spend your time looking at how much sugar is in your food. How much additives? How many words you can't pronounce should not spend your days comparing well. Gee If had this agreement can cause I guarantee you if your ass was hungry and you're standing on line for food you would love love. Green beans Ns okay. We'll make this little loss on. Well done meat. Is it safer again? My mother and my sister will only eat. Well done meat. Which I think ruins meet in. I'd rather Potentially die maybe from even some immoral green means in a candidate in under-cooked then not eat properly cooked steak overcooked meat. Just like why bother you know what I mean? Yeah so could you do you? Can you get more sick? From undercooked will you're not gonNA eat a medium. Rare Turkey Burger. Yeah Chances. Are you GonNa meet Sal Salmonella? You know you're going to get. You'RE GONNA get some sort of food borne illness. If you eat a lot of undercooked poultry. You can eat raw meat of course yeah stakes tire. Yeah and you can eat raw seafood. Lotta people prefer raw food cooked. It's about where knowing where the meat comes from. I don't think that over cooking meat is making it safer for you ground meats. I would agree I I I could see where the argument if you're buying process meat and you don't know where it came from the butcher that it came from which. I wouldn't do to begin with yes. You are safer if you cook the Meat Patty through depending on what's living in it's right but it's GonNa tastes like crap anyway. So why would you don't necessarily buy meat patties price club so when you're spending your money at the grocery store you're spending it on quality me. Every single person in America should notice every single grocery store and website. Okay every place. You buy food in every way we buy. Food has a policy of loss leaders shifting specials that aired not always seasonal or in tune with nature. Whatever they're just meant to get your business in bring you in every time there's a great price on great quality Meat Fish. Chicken your favorite vegetables. Whatever it is. That's when you over by something and take the time to put it away properly Cook it then freeze it? Whatever you're going to do but every single week or few days every place that you buy food does that. So that's how you pick if you're living on a limited budget. I'm going to make more Broccoli this week and I'm not GonNa make this this week. You can write down a loose game plan of what you want for your weeks meals for yourself or your family of four six or twelve. Who Cares you have to be flexible enough to also be intelligent when you shop and say Oh. I'm going to change the game plan. I'M GONNA make Baba this week instead because the price on that beautiful. The tomatoes are looking. How great those green beans are see how people to switch up the game plan a little bit. That's why learning some basics of cooking. How who needs to be hot. I then you need some sort of source effect to cook the product. That's going into the band. Learning basic skills is important. We used to do that in public school in this country. Saying you don't anymore. Yeah but you used to be able to graduate high school. Know How to cook for yourself so on a button fix a car at heard about these days existed and you had boasts programs where kids could work as teenagers. Basically what what we call in turns out you could go and work in a mechanic shop in a restaurant you could go out in the world and experience life and learn actual skills that people need to survive. The point of cooking is to be self sufficient and improve your own self esteem. The point of cooking is to feed yourself mind body and soul and then feed other people. The point of cooking is not to show off. The point of cooking is simply existence and having more fun while you're here that is the bottom great way to end. Where would someone go to learn their cooking skills? You know there's a woman who's thirty minute meals for twenty years now. They're all really accessible. She's written twenty six books on the subject and has currently a magazine called in season that you can find many things including three minute meals in meals and picture goals food food. Do I write a meal and pictures every two three minute meal and I read all the thirty minute meals every month that I write every meal we cook for. What'S FOR DINNER TONIGHT? "Dinner table as long as we were listening more than we were talking as long as we weren't route. And could you eat at any time of the day or did you know that she would well? My mom worked in restaurants and a lot of the time. We were with her and she would say. Are you hungry inch put down dinner? Find as we got older and we were more like Latchkey kids. She would leave. The food in the fridge. Should Cook on whatever few hours she could steal here and there she'd cook ahead and he'd be in charge of it. You know when you're hungry. Put it in a pan and turn it on your case. Put it in a microwave case. Yes she's baking cakes in a microwave day. It's like maybe once or twice a year you can skelly brings me to the Freezer. Finish with the picky. Forget to the advice on the picky eating children. Guy Hide it like puree and had vegetables tomato sauce NAM cauliflower to the buttered noodles. They have no choice if they're just trying to get the butter noodle and you have chopped up cauliflower. They've no choice but to eat it right. That's where what they want is yep so sausage you can just you know. Puree it at the butter to the pureed white thing and then put it with noodles so you puree you hide it you mask or you make it. So they can only get what they want with it. cheese case Diaz Brad. They hide a multitude of stuff when children. They usually children aren't picky eaters if you're giving them whatever you're eating until they get to school and then they're influenced by other kids That were poorly fed. And they come home and say what's what that's when you lie and or become a comedian when my knees started asking let. Cnn Area John. One I would say dinosaur boogers. Poppy would make her laugh. And just say like you eat it. You don't eat it you know. Be Hungry go go God again. Go outside and play then. Sooner or later you'll get hungry. What we're eating have a nice said. They'll have different acts and everything else starve to death. Yeah I know they're like I'm not GONNA eat this. I want a cheese stick. We'll don't buy the freaking cheese. I just tell not that everything has cheese in it and then she'd do no matter what it is cheese in here one cookie that we had in my house. When I was a kid was the Stella d'oro breakfast tree like that was a big deal. Yeah Yeah my mother just never bought that stuff home when she sticks Now not bad though. We serve them for lunches. I don't even know you're talking about like Sri. She drank right and those are tasty and man. I don't know we never achieved in my freshman head cheese and you could see a piece of cheese. Yeah when a piece of cheese was always presented with fiber or fruit it was always presented with cup vegetable and or fruit or dried fruits. And Yeah we never just had a cheese stick for us. Everything was bought the cheapest way to buy anything is by unit price. You never my food by the price on the tag or the shelf talker game you buy things by their unit price everything in the world in a grocery store and in your food world whether you buy it. Online grocery store has a weight to it. A measurement of some sort The price is the measurement divided into the cost of food. Man That is the price per unit of measure. That is the only way you gauge. What you're actually paying for anything. So when when I buy spice cheese protein vegetables I look for the best unit price for the quality of that thing that I want I I don't buy pre cutter prepackaged Chee anything in a while. I mean if it's something simple like shredded pepper jacker something or you know topping a chilly for big parties. Of course they will. Yeah I'll pay the premium it's already shredded. Take the time to shred it up in the kitchen. Yeah but generally speaking. No I buy a chunk of this Jesus chunk of that cheese and you take some of what you need and you go about life. I buy bulk spices and in the amount that I need so that I can keep the spices. Fresh always rotating I buy the produce. They need unless I know it's something that's going to last a long period of time. I'm failing this test by the way already everything's Test. I don't know but I'm our great. That's so ridiculous to eighty seven things. I can't talk about ice cream for segment. I might add glitter all over my face a little bit over my fingers. She was delicately doing this. And that and the other. I'm like a mack truck. My parents used to award me. Twenty dollars restrained as and soccer goals and it messed up my whole every six now. That's quest quick. You have dropping guests. You didn't know they were coming. You don't have any fresh food. What do you make? What's in the freezer? You pull it well again. Always in the freezer there's chilies pasta sauces in your pantry. You should already be stocked up to make in my case We're Mediterranean Diet. People So I could always make Putin ESCA okay so spicy red tomato sauce with capers and oil cared olives. Email anchovies into garlic oil with chilis. And you add canned tomatoes so Putin ESCA. I'll Yoyo garlic and oil pasta. I have everything in the cupboard to make a variety of different seafood pasta dishes. I always have eggs. Most people have bacon you commit Carbonara always in the freezer always always always I have compound butters which we just used in his last show. Can you explain the difference of those compound? Butter is when you take a soft stick of unsalted butter okay so that you can control the sultan it. Okay and I make deviled butter or in this past show. I made Makhadov butter which is just garlicky. Herb butter basically It has capers in Dijon in his flash wish to share and lemons as soon as possible lemon juice and dill parsley chives. You put all of that into the butter mix it up and then you roll it in parchment and keep them in the freezer new mark on the outside of the package. This butter that butter the other. It's good on any protein. Any grilled vegetable. Anything literally anything you can put on anything and it takes it to the next level. Always freeze pro team of any kind okay. Shrimp steaks chicken cooked cooked raw. Your well you can. You can freeze cooked through to that and then gets all the important part. Is you freeze it in portions so it's quicker to defrost as if you put an exchange of water and a dish you know large edition you turn the water on and you let the water run over the deep. Fry ANYTHING TO DEFROST IT. It'll happen in just a few minutes visually. You're cooking food and turning it to rubber. We already talked about this. But if you have things that are single portions they defrost almost instantly always have pets does in in the freezer always always always again put in addition warm water. It will defrost just a few minutes off always have in the refrigerator. Fruits vegetables cheese shark kind of thing that you can put together to make a little fruit. And she's board for people so that they can be snacking while you're taking something out of the Freezer Pantry. Exactly I mean on and on and on you to go on with us all day and all night. It's you just have to set up your kitchen for how you like to eat And I think it's lovely. If people stopped by when my was a kid on Sunday everyone in the on the peninsula on Lake George where she grew up. Everyone would come over to their house in. Stop in my GRANDPA would have to take the kitchen table outside. So he can people around you know and love that And giants are just always prepared to feed as many Italian. Everybody can be Italian. I actually wrote a book called. Everyone is Italian on Sunday. Two week we need to rebuild. You have no choice. It has to be done. The epic fiction podcast. Tumen Bane returns. I we met before. Oh yes general from creators John. Scott Dryden and Mike Walker. I need soldiers and I need them. Now Maya is defeated. Don't you see it's not a gift? It's a cuss Vista God. We're going to end with a little fun. Game of cooking myth or fact will alternate. Okay okay do you really need to Polka potato before putting it in the oven? Well Yeah. This team's escaping the potato as it's cooking down and I never well I won't say never occasionally for a fact I'll I'll put a potato foil But I always scrubbed my potatoes with a brush and put a little spray of olive oil on them and kosher salt and pepper potato skins are really nutrient dense. And I wrote them on a little tray rather than Iraq so that they're like good to go and I can eat the whole thing like nine people are so weird they'll go.

"Morin and this is a production of iheartradio and Britten. Co All my life. Everyone's told me I should focus on being good at one thing but the truth is I'm curious about a lot of things. But how do you learn about everything? The answer make the world's best experts teach you in less than an hour so come along with me as we all learned something new in today's episode. Were chatting with the one and only Rachel Ray. I'm so inspired by this woman. She someone who is truly found a way to turn her passion into an empire. I've had the honor of being a frequent guest on her show. And My co-founder engine. I recently had the chance to drop by her studio to try and soak up all over cooking secrets. Hey guys it's bread and an and we're talking about cooking today fired up in my shoes. Would you consider yourself a good cook? So I consider myself a creative and efficient cook. Ooh What does that mean? I like experimenting with lots of ingredients but I feel like in the last couple of years mostly because of kiddos. I have everything really fast. And it's like about perfect preparation and mixing ready made things with homemade thing rank vibe. Do you repeat your meals. I have go to meals like what I always like. Jane chickpea Lentil Pasta with home. But I do homemade. Pesto Andras Vegetarian. At Fi- I am. I need protein so all I want to eat as pasta is chickpea your favorite. Oh the chickpea pasta not with actual chick and lentils okay it's all about Pasta substitutes and a toddler I have now bought like eighty versions of different forms of Pasta to g Lintel Mixed veggie. Lack beat carrot blend. Oh Yeah Squid No. I don't do that well. That's why you'll know that's a classic Italian flavor. It's not actual close squid really. I Cook Vegetarian. I consider myself more of a Baker Than Cook. I can cook. I can follow recipe is I can get creative. It's just not as fun and creative to me as baking. 'cause you like the art piece. The Art of baking feels more scientific and precise interesting now. The big struggles though for me like you are time. Yup We're working women. We're working working. Girls pay where mom career woman business grows. So I was actually intrigued by Rachel Ray from an early age. Because it's like thirty minute meal on the table. I'm really excited to chat with her today. To get more tips. I totally agree. And actually we're recording on location at the Rachel Ray Studio in New York City. We've been sneaking around of it and it smells good in here. Rachel thank you so much for joining us to teach me something new about cooking. Sure what would you like to know everything? I think? We have quite enough hours in the day to give everything right before we get into cooking though. Let's talk about your business a little bit. So you've got your TV. Show countless cookbooks multiple product lines. I am a hard worker. I like to draw like draw furniture dishes. I like to draw food and recipes. So I'm very creative person and I see things in pictures so I just go to work every day and try and make the pictures sort of happen. What's how you measure success? The just getting up and working and at the end of the day if I am capable of being grateful for it whether it was what other people would consider a good day or bad day or a fun day. Can I find gratitude for that day that that is a successful day now? I don't care about things I never have when I made next to. Nothing a tried to provide insurance for my family and with my friends I have never gauged my life by what other people consider the markings of success in fact many times in my life. I play long ball many times in my life since I've had the choice since since I've owned you know television shows and rights to this and that and I've made business deals never based on money but based on quality of life and how much money could pay other people. The only reason I go to work as for the work itself because it's fun and I enjoy it and when it's not fun hour at something else. Yeah I love that. What about the show? Can you even keep track? Do you have favorite guest? Yeah favorite moments was at all Blah every day is so different here There's always something surprising and fun. It over the years. Of course her favorite moments for our two thousand episode Oprah hosted me. All of the guests were a surprise. Other than Oprah of course over here I wish somebody who told me that my husband was going to be here because another surprise guest was my mad crush fifty cent. A made me video from the set of power apologizing that he couldn't be here and while I was hugging the Monitor. Saying aw thank you for sending me your best wishes. And he is standing behind me holding flowers and Tom Ford seat Really Sweet Planet like a tree obviously and the entire time my husband John. My poor judge. Did you have a little talk about night? Talk is really more like watching John. Be Really Sad. All like there wasn't yelling it was just like I had kicked a puppy. Yeah a lot repeatedly. It was terrible. I felt really my husband. Have our list right. Johnny has a list to of course because the top of it. He's always like why could I welcome? You couldn't bring her whole John Now. The problem is everybody's ever been on my list. I have fed them or they have come to the show so and the way too early pisses him off stunning. Exactly I see that yes so yeah so I mean going back to your show. A lot of cooking shows and cookbooks. I feel like our super intimating like I just want to watch them. But that's not the message of anything that I talked or a part of. I want people to feel good about themselves. This is not aspirational television. One day. Maybe you hand listen. I make great food. I write great food and I make meals here that I'm proud to share with people and I put very special meals in my most reason. Cookbook my twenty-six cookbook is a mash up and food from my private life. So there's things in there that takes three days to make you know but I write in a style. That's not intimidating for people. So that literally anyone whether it's a great chef or someone who cooks very infrequently or just lives on meat and potatoes. They don't have to be intimidated by it. That's my job is to make you feel good. Even if you hate me you could do what I do and feel a little bit better absolutely. That's my goal. How did you get into cooking? Someone teach you restaurants. There's no choice well first of all. It's an Italian family. My mother's side of the family's Sicilian. My mother is one of ten. My GRANDPA was one of fourteen in large families. Everyone knows the basic skills of life. Everyone can take care of themselves. Provide for themselves and cook period. But my mom worked in restaurants for sixty years. She didn't like strangers watching her children. So we were simply at her side. I'm the only one of her children that chose food. Is it profession but I like it. It's an innocent way to make a living and now I get to do everything. Really I get to travel to talk to presidents and First Ladies and movie stars. The thing I'm most proud of with our show is that we don't always have celebrity content. We let people see themselves. Everyone is of equal importance to me. And I think that that's what I want the show to project and I think that's why we're still here after fifteen years quite frankly. Thousands of shows over the last twenty years alone have come and gone especially daytime television. But if you look at the the grand scope between cable and syndicated. Tv. It's astronomical that the amount of shows that have come and gone in the in the fifteen years I've been ear and certainly in the twenty years I've been at food network so you've inspired this whole generation with things like thirty minute meals. I'm curious how you adapt the way you teach cooking skills to neutral new. You have to be curious and you have to study and you have to write for what people want you know. I've gone through so many I mean fifty years old so I've gone through all the trends of. I never want to touch another car by Kenny. This I don't eat.

"Been doing for the last five hundred years but it is scary to think that that might. LGBTQ community members out. There are at risk I remember when gay marriage was Or same sex marriage was was legalized in. I remember thinking. That's not the end of it like there will be more that comes up and here we are. You know we're we're talking about are trans brothers and sisters not being able to potentially not being able to Hold a job or stay in their home home or be just being able to raise raise families if they WANNA tim be safe in the place that they call home. Cumin lives are at stake and and Were were in solidarity with With our our trans community members and so while I am scared him also really hopeful hopeful. I mean this is a new generation of activists across the country and I'm I'm hopeful Again whatever comes out of the the Supreme Court I know that people who really care and people who are the most impacted are GonNa come together and continue doing what we've been doing and I love that so you said that you're still hopeful. Because as I was following the conversation the other day there were people who were saying the exact same thing that regardless regardless of what happens we will continue to fight and we'll continue to make a way and even in this political climate. I love Wick Harrison. Awesome Anna Presley says is we can't let people take our hope and were still able to find joy and live our lives the best way that we can. Yeah absolutely and you know as a as a light skinned indigenous percent who is non binary but very feminine presenting like it is. It is my responsibility to make sure end. It is especially white ciswomen responsibility to ensure that we are creating safe we're helping create create safe communities And that were not just allowing ourselves to to find joy but to make sure that it's not only creating safe spaces safe communities for our most marginalized community members but that we are giving them the space That they are taking being space to find joy themselves in I. I want to be very clear that I may not live at at all of the intersections. That Black Trans Women are a- and that it is incumbent on of the the people who don't live at those intersections Help create the safe communities. Is that that we need most definitely and it's one of the things that I love about you. Is You always point out the intersection now at peace and and the work that you do because I was having a conversation the other day in someone was just asking me about feminism and I said Ed when you look at feminism because we're talking about policy making it better for women is you have to look at all the angles. It just can't be. Oh this is GonNa work for women it has to be. How will this work for? LGBTQ women how will this work for black women how this worked for native women. How will this work for disabled women? How will this work for women in rural communities even the were all women? You still can't put us in this one box when it comes is to policy solutions exactly and it goes back to that old political saying we're not one issue voters. We're whole people. I think our political system in our our society is slowly but surely moving towards a place where we are seeing people holistically and not just I as a certain sect of voters or special interest group so I have hoped this season as we focus on service and waste give back. "Well the more you breakdown garlic or onion there's enzyme activity released compounds and you're absolutely right onion juice if he process in a food processor does have bitter compounds and that's been actually studying lab now I- oddly enough make tomato sauce grated onion which I really love but the greatest onion doesn't really released that much juice so it's the juice juice sits around and gets bidder I you have a suggestion for you though about chopping vegetables the Japanese vegetable nice thinner blades and they're sharper and they also have handled I think are easier they have octogonal handles traditional Japanese knife and when they chop vegetables they slice them you know they slice through them. They don't chop the way inch too so if you've got a good Japanese knife it's a vegetable knife like an aquarium which looks like a Chinese cleaver except it's only two inches high I find as those nice for vegetables and my hands don't hurt and it's much much less work that's one thing but you're right the juice onion juice is not a friend if you don't like bitter taste well the more that you chop an onion or rough it up the more you develop those compounds lies thing I've found I almost never only chopping onion anymore. You can coarsely chop an onion for most recipes soups stews and that sort of thing so I was trained in the French method which everything has to be SARA is looking at it depends on how long it's in the recipe if you're doing a quick saute onions than it should be fine but ninety percent of recipes of course shop is fine so eight five five four two six nine eight four three that's eight five five four two six nine eight four three or email us at questions at Milk Street radio DOT COM hi my name's Kelly Hi Kelly where you calling from I'm calling from Maryland in between Baltimore and DC Okay how can we help you well I had a very vigorous volunteer mystery plant show up in my garden this year and I've been able to positively identify Fi is a purple she so plant and I had never heard of that before and I thought it would be fun to ask you all what I might do it I said well I might make the best use of it I think the first thing I'd WanNa know is is it really is it turns out something very close with poisonous s. i. positively identified as she so so it's like Basil I guess except it has a stronger flavor and you could use it like that fresh on top of things as crap of some kind you could also make a pesto out of it you could use Sabih so instead of pine nuts and making a pesto cheese that might work this is strong basil so it's fresh urban used to me it reminds me a tiny has a tiny bit of a liquorice taste to it stronger than it's in the mint family but I agree with Chris I think anywhere you'd use basil or mint you could use it a she so Mojo you there we are with cocktails and you know it's mostly you find it in Japanese dishes but there's no reason you couldn't take elsewhere I like the idea of using it with me so for a pesto that sounds like something yeah good it's also with fish or with some sort of a roth I love we actually yeah thank you sir you're tough well all right Kelly thank you thank you I have a lot of fun ideas I appreciate you taking my call thanks bye bye you're listening to milk street radio up next it's Rachel Ray that's coming up right after this break how would you like to take it a private cooking class in the likes of Gordon Ramsay Wolfgang Puck or maybe even Thomas Keller or maybe you want to know something about comedy from Steve Martin or the art of magic from Penn and teller or maybe aboard were course on investigative journalism well now you can online at.

"We went through everything that I disappointed going there the types of attacks that are being leveled everything so I'm like bringing godless ideologies into the church to I should be in how we understand grace and forgiveness but such that abusers there is willing to get education because scriptures doesn't stop every single detail scripture does it have the federal world evidence in scripture doesn't have what we understand about how our logic systems process trauma and how many razer retrieved after someone has been abused and so we could benefit wise teaching in a lot of areas and you know obviously you hold that up cannot be able to see warning signs I do not understand how to respond when those in the happening in their church but because most of imbalance in church is found in improper or imbalanced theology it makes it very difficult to deal with because what happens is when you speak up against the about these churches against what he points in Christianity immediate response is you're attacking the Gospel you WanNa see the church destroyed bringing down a godly man you're creating tation you can apply enough outside pressure if you're lucky you can apply enough outside pressure that it motivates them to the next time because they don't want to be you know they don't want suit they don't want to have to pay damages to victims they don't WanNa lose their reputation they don't WanNa lose their credibility the churches don't don't work like that most of the time honestly believe they're being persecuted for the Gospel and then buckled down Haga and that makes it very difficult to change the tone of what happened in the Church today that was Rachel denhellender her book what is a girl worth is out now I would really encourage you to pick this book up really just listened to everything that Rachel does she's he doesn't really want but she is choosing to fight anyway so that other people don't have to it it's incredibly admirable and and I've loved reading the book moved by it we're GonNa take a quick break when we come back it's ask is there something that interferes with.

"Z. Congress is just getting started we're like we are going to take a quick break and there's no pesticides on it and they've been doing this for hundreds and hundreds of years smuggling Jay doesn't change at all that's exactly what this these scientists yes when that happened so I re- is GonNa take any credit for that was I leave and the whole country falls apart yeah really the week we had peace would you guys did man that's what he made it a place so I brought I brought in and true host fashioned here one is an actual musician well Tim leary musician too and John David you and I are fans of music even if we are not necessarily great at making it turn on so the rock and Roll Hall of fame nominees were announced today to a lot of fanfare a lot of people on here who seem like they deserve some attention and the Rock Hall of Fame You have folks like Whitney Houston is on their Judas priest nine inch nails aureus was nominated t-rex thin lizzy Pat Ben Atar we also have Dave Matthews Band somebody had to slip through the cracks I don't know what kind of vetting process happens but they've got his nomination to so that's all interesting we can go back and forth about who deserves to be in or who doesn't have to be in but otherwise wondered about the rock and Roll Hall of fame that I find to be that I find to be a real issues the first one is pretty specific the rock and roll hall of fame do you guys know where it's at it's an Ohio isn't it it's in Cleveland Ohio maybe no no judgment on the good folks of Cleveland and I have good friends in Cleveland. I've been to Cleveland one of the best concerts iris on my life was in Cleveland but Cleveland doesn't strike me as a rock and roll city by any measure it's cool until you find out that it's in Cleveland it's like Oh is that just like a little side like what is like what does it look like who landed in the country music fame is a Nashville that makes a Lotta sense if there are any other music Genre Music Hall of fame where they're based out of Cleveland and Nashville where being said L. A. or New York or I feel like I feel either of those or even like Detroit even like like that like that kind of blue-collar you know I don't know born in the USA Vibe of rock and roll Cleveland is just like the baseball yeah they like baseball and they have the browns who have orange helmets which is very confusing Mary drew Carey drew. Yeah are there any I think Howard the duck was based out of Cleveland strange that is in harmony from are they from Cleveland are you kidding me man the whole thing I didn't know that at all they would be thieving up in Cleveland Yeah remember they ended the thuggish ragas bone when she's like Leveland deathly have I feel like I'm really I feel very because I like to think that I like to think that I could say oh yeah of course they are from Cleveland but now I did excuse and bone this is news to me Ohio has that the like the idea of the quintessential heartland of America thing social trying to nail the like Oh this is rock and Roll Hall of fame this is the heartbeat of America is rock and roll our and our musical angst the maybe somewhere in the heartland would make sense but at but it's still you're right it doesn't it doesn't feel like rock and roll town he's a little too buttoned up to me it feels that kind of gets at the second part my second issue with the Rock and Roll Hall of fame is that there's nothing less rock and roll than like being drafted the status of a bunch of voters in suits like gathered around to be like who gets in this year into the cool club it doesn't that go I get what are these guys grew up listening to to whoever let's just say to the Doobie brothers like you know what I want to be just like them and hopefully Day get whatever they make some sort of like Madame Toussaud's Type wax-figure Italy in and this is not a knock on this is knock on holiday house of in general I think the best thing you can do for your rock and roll crat if you've got nominated for the hall of fame is just tell them where to stick their nomination and go back to making music because that feels way true or to the rock and roll eat that feels rock and roll like I feel like it should be some sort of like like Art Installation Hotel that's just like trashed where your your year like your your your reward is you get to go up once they're like all the rooms are trashed because that's the way what the winner gets you get to go trash a hotel when you win you just have been der- in just like trashed a hotel and now that they're inviting hip-hop things in so it's just like we're just gonNA have to alter it for just like you throw just some sort of Dope House party or something like and that's what we get to do if you're a rapper and you get inducted into the hall of Fame Just House Party I think that would be more interesting to visit to to walk through into the showing so partied in or it's just like this right and look at the difference level the threat levels of destruction and everything that could be interesting especially if it's like a posthumous award like what Biggie was nominated for to have his friends and family his loved ones go in and trash and throw a huge party and his name that would be that would be like a really legendary House Party notorious B I g memorial for his induction into the rock and Roll Hall of fame it'd be way better the whatever they're gonNa do to the somebody in a Tuxedo he's given a speech about how much this would have meant to big win it wouldn't have meant any anything to him to be like the what that's not that's barely a slice but I thought about it and with as much talent as like it's cool that I kind of hope the I'm a big nine inch nails fan nine inch nails a spy only nominated I feel like maybe Trent could do a little bit of like a like a little bit of like a screw you to the man little tongue in cheek I all no exceptions speech kind of thing if they get if they even get it to him I don't know that's going to be the threat make money though man humanitarians anyways so the second one is more on brand for us and you may have seen this story going round but we didn't get to talk about it here on their own podcast so I wanted to bring to the attention. I'm sure we're all familiar with the preachers sneakers yes I I think we've talked about a number of times here it's it's a very funny accounts still going strong I feel like the buzz has kind of dissipated a little bit like people got it right but but it's still the critique definitely stance but there's a new contender on the preachers and sneakers game there's a new a new challenger has approached for maybe the title of the ultimate preacher sneaker so there's a street wear brand that I'm not familiar with called MSCE ask and for one thousand four hundred twenty five dollars so you can get this pair of sneakers a pair of Lati- Pretty Standard Nike airmax ninety seven's but he got some special features to help you quote walk on water each saw the souls of each pair of these shoes have been injected with water directly from the Jordan River which has been blessed by a priest before it was put into the shoes there's also a crucifix that's tied to the that's tied to the sneakers there's a Bible Verse Matthew Fourteen Twenty Five is on the well that's the that's where Jesus walked on water Nisa few other just kind of like tacky Christiani symbols That are that are present on it which I feel like somebody had this season the preacher and sneakers thing and be like we were talking about with the with the scientists tabulate yeah we could do there's material here we could and I find it really I find that whatever the you make the president sneakers account I know there's been that one's been talked around a lot I find the recent kind of like hybrid of Christian type stuff with high fashion to be really interesting and really bizarre and I don't know where it came from like not just the people who dislike pastors who wear high fashion stuff but like bringing actual Christian symbols and making them a part of high fashion items of which this is just the most explicit example but it's also these shoes are fourteen hundred dollars like these are very expensive shoes to be tied to that so I didn't well the truth is Audrey Assad has the best take on it ever okay she tweets I really hope they call these hurt Jordan's man not only to the slice Andris be meeting with a way better joke they're gonna come so good oh I just out audrey dog I was like Yo this is this is the content I signed assist here because it's too dumb to even get mad no this is bad that reply I to something this preposterous this is why you can never delete twitter ship someone's going to give you a gym like that and you're like the assist you just you just captured all of it in that makes call river joy is not the same to find out via screen shot on facebook you gotta stay on twitter you have to see it in real time I'm glad you told me I'm sorry that I missed about him ladder you've talked to me were you in the Jordan river when you're over there prop did you and my me and my wife got we got a it was like our anniversary's this month so we took his trip as like a ten year anniversary so we did did a double talk baptism in the Jordan so that was pretty Rad it was like a rededication for our marriage and ten year celebration Yada a dove flew who in landed not making that up dove came did you hear a voice from the clouds I heard a voice from the shore I say hurry up her also heard the sound of sound of money changers selling us photos of the moment yeah I've I've never been I've never been to Israel visit people always people talk a lot about how it just changes you like that's the thing like that how I dislike puts its like seeing the Bible in color for the first time would you say that it was a would you call it a transformative illustrates formative for a number of reasons one was like yeah like the idea that so you get you're getting these moments are having these like you're standing on the Mount of Olives Oh my God this is the Gardner assembly or maybe the garden look like this like wow this is incredible like oh my God I'm having his spirits a moment on this land and then like a group of kids just being out of school just like walk by you you know throwing stuff at each other dropping trash and just being kids and then you're snap back into reality of like Oh yeah it's just the hill actually just live here are here every day and for me that was actually helpful in spirit to experience so that you don't like start you know worshipping saying being like y'all it's just a rock man you know what I'm saying like so for me that part of the the the actual like earth the newness of it was the most transformative and granted it was like knowing what's happening in Palestine and just like all shows church modern political drama really clouded a lot of the like for me a lot of the just suspending reality fantasy like it was just like man there's like actually like real suffering happening.

Rachael Denhollander on the power of Larry Nassar's manipulation

"But I every investigation into wrongdoing begins with one person coming forward publicly in the case of USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar that person has been Rachel denhellender islander during Nasser's trial more than one hundred and fifty women and girls got up to speak about the abused they had been subjected to for so long the final victim to give a statement was Rachel denhellender there she asked a question how much is a little girl worth now she's out with a new memoir and a children's book with the same name spoke with Rachel from our ABC C. Studios and because we think our account is so important we wanted to bring you the whole interview in two parts in the first. She discusses coming forward with her story. When you first went to Larry Nassar when you first went to him you or how old it was just after my fifteenth birthday you right so much in here about that time period it and and some of the things you talk about not being ready to go there yet because you weren't quite sure what was happening and it's a familiar I heard from all the girls in the case. It didn't know yeah and that's actually a very familiar dynamic with childhood. Sexual in general most abusers are some of that you know awesome that you should be able to trust and so being able to reconcile what's happening with the person that this you know who this is supposed to be is almost impossible. Most childhood sexual assault victims victims don't really fully grasp what's happening to them and when you add a medical veneer over the top of that makes it even more difficult and then you add to it that most abusers are to an extent pillars in the community and you definitely had that that dynamic with Larry and so a huge factor that that kept me silent and kept me believing that this must be medical treatment was that I trusted everyone everyone around me not just my abuser trusted the community around the institutions and authority figures that surrounded Larry to have insured that he was doing accurate medical treatment and you also also did talk to one person and that was your mother who you guys rent went through all the scenarios of if we go forward what might happen at the time when you were just a teenager it yeah so. Larry abused me for almost two years and it wasn't until very near the end that he crossed the line that I knew is abuse and at that point I just froze and so I didn't know what to do with information and I didn't tell my mom for about a year because this shame was just such a heavyweight that verbalizing the abuse wasn't wasn't something news capable of yet but when I did disclose to her and we began having those conversations you know at at seventeen years old I had seen enough of how the culture treat sexual assault victims to know what would happen if I spoke in the last thing I wanted to do was speak up and not win because I knew that would empower Larry to be able to continue and I knew if I pulled that string with Larry I pulled the string of big ten university and I touched their department and I touched a United States Olympic governing body that made the most money out of our summer Olympics six and that touches the USOC and that touches Senate and so I was very acutely aware of the dynamics that I was up against an when I was seventeen I said to my mom. I can't do this without media media pressure. It won't be successful and I can't do this anonymously and so even had that discussion. What do you do do you walk into a newsroom and you say here's here's a story and you just hope they do something with with it? We didn't know what to do with that. We knew what it was going to have to look like to speak up but we didn't know how to make that happen and so really for sixteen years. That's what I was waiting for. I I was waiting for an opportunity and you really kind of put it behind you. You talk about the story of how you met your husband and how you had your kids and you moved on and you were ready ready to go okay. I can move on with this and then Cain that Indie star piece that you saw and you said no enough. That's it and that was the catalyst right yeah. That's what I was waiting for. You know I got to a place where I realized my healing can't depend on whether or not Larry admits what he does whether or not I ever see the justice or whether he stopped and I moved forward with my own healing but I was constantly watching for a chance just following his career looking for any crack that people were believing vink beginning to believe what was taking place in USA gymnastics because I knew if they could see the abusive culture at Sag they might be willing to believe that their own team physician could be the an abuser and that's really what I saw with at Indy start it was the first time that journalists had been able to gain traction pointing to the abuse of environment in United States gymnastics and being able to say this is happening and it's wrong when you went forward and made that decision to say this is what I'm going to do that was difficult for you because you wrote it all down and then can you write about how you thought about it and you said and then I just hit send. Sometimes you just need to hit send yeah and it was you know I'm I'm fortunate because there was was there was the internal battle of knowing what it was going to cost but because I had been waiting and watching for sixteen years I knew exactly what needed to be done. I near how I needed to be done and it really wasn't toys. I had always known if there is an opportunity. This is how it was going to have to be done and I saw that opportunity than as a shot in the dark but you have to take it how much of your legal legal background helped you with this case and knowing what to do and some of the things that you you knew were really important with all of this it was absolutely foundational because it allowed me to review review the case law and the statutes to look at the evidence that I had to be able to approach the prosecutor in the investigator insane. We have a case here this is this is how it can be proven. This is the evidence that I have and just guiding me through the process understanding the dynamics of communication and how to get the story out of Larry's control how to get out of the control of the university and the institutions that were surrounding him so that they couldn't control the narrative anymore next week. We'll bring you part two of that interview with Rachel More Oscar what it was like sitting through all of the impact impact statements and being the last woman to testify

"That forty nine dollar deal at tribe easter dot com i snatch any kiss you some bistrot eat in the of your best life okay. We've covered a lot already. Honestly you talked about walking. <hes> is walking a self care ritual for you yes yes. It's a it's a physical and mental l. Health little ritual for me yeah and you know i've i've seen doctors that said all you really need is to walk half an hour a day. That's all you really need to be doing keeping the body moving yep so are you just you said you get tired. Does is just the exercise that you found that works for are you weren't really lifestyle and i'm like i'm naturally like really muscular so if i do say i would've thought you definitely swim or run track or something now i i'd build muscle real easy so if i was to do like cross fit well i mean that's an extreme example. If i was really do anything other than walking i would look like a little bulky. How interesting. I'm i feel so bad for me. I just build muscles so quit. No it's not the cute guide. That's really muscular giller taller resisting ballerina muscle memory. That's good yeah if you set yourself up for your real young. It just really carries it so really. Does it really does that weird yeah man. Why did i do anything athletic child bogging sims and j you know because you were like i have good genetics. I don't need to do anything. I guess but we gotta keep it together. You know what i mean. I'm so jealous of people with just naturally skinny jeans well. I worked though i do pull out okay. I do that too. I do this l- agree thing like twice a week but besides that psych it's only twenty five minute song. It's like i like super reformer. Okay okay so like you're going to be like you'll be in the plank right normal pilates machine and then all of a sudden they will like tilted side to side. It's like a little robot. They'll like like raise it up and down. It's crazy. It's like the <hes>. It's like the mechanical bowl inside of sunset ranch. Orange yep totally wild wiling mechanical bullpen. That's really. I like a short. I just get bored. Yeah i hate it. I hate it but the whole time i'm doing. I just go. I'm gonna fucking hot. I'm gonna fuck yeah and i'm like it. Just that's how i get through it. Yeah my vanity will prevail. My vanity will prevail yeah. It's two point oh right now. 'cause you get you're going through a breakup you. It just really come out. Come out of the gate. Strong trying are single. Yes so let me ask you something. How do oh you've. What do you think about like sending nudes sending <hes> not don't do that until you really know the person yeah. That's you don't want those floating around but do i do. You do want them kardashian so i've always been everyone listens knows that i'm i consider myself a never nude very uptight about my body and very tight about showing my body. I won't go to the korean spa and kind of that kind of thing but now that i am going through this i can reinvent invent myself yeah. It's like an it's like an open opportunity to reinvent weird friends. It's just always naked. I have friends like that was always you don't need to walk are renner. Our hotel room naked always don't wanna see right right so there's there's i would say so happy balance. Yes i would say old. Jackie was the extreme in the other direction direction of that. You know what i mean like. It's like bachelorette weekend. Everyone's changing. I would like go in the closet. Nobody look at me. I would shower a swimsuit. You'll you know what i mean. Okay again. Not that extreme but you know what i'm saying so like i was about to read the other weekend. I was like you know what i'm going to take a shower and i'm gonna leave the door open so people could get ready in their shower. Yeah you could see straight after the shower glass like here's my here's my ass all your chance. Here's a new never knew. Jackie can't come to the phone right now. I'm a new woman. Yeah your new and so. I never took nude photos of myself ever because i was like someone's going to see them. They're.

Okay it's super old but it is a few months old and i wanted to warn you about that. Why is it a few months old. You know what because life kept getting in the way okay <hes> <hes> my episode schedule kept getting a little wonky. I had the florida girls on you know they had to promote their show. I had travis calls on needed remote. David makes man. Are we all watching by the way incredible <hes> so you know i had a schedule and then the schedule got off and then i've been recording nannies and sometimes i make a mini real up. Make a real up a mini and i'm on the go as you know. No i keep getting swept away to delaware on a moment's notice. New jackie is living her life long story short. I'm releasing its episode. It's a couple of months old okay. Also i told a personal story this up so that i was gonna cut out but then i was like you know what fac it okay so enjoy it. All you lookie not lose or in this case the listener lose also the past episodes and ask you would have been very light on the makeup chat this one. We'll scratch that each talk makeup honey any and then <hes> next week's many will be all about any beauty expo. My discoveries is going to be lots of fun stuff so be on the look out for that okay last disclaimer in the interview i did with tyler abbott from aether beauty. I was originally going to make that a mini and obviously she was so interesting and we had such a great talk that we ended up gavin. I made it a full length so while i was there oh so i didn't record a song for her app and then ended up needing one so i chopped it off of this episode glad to hear and put it on that one so you know what i'm keeping it on here. I'm keeping it on here. You're gonna hear cream in my religion again. Okay and you know what i'm fine with that and i hope nobody judges me. Okay just surprise when you hear it on being real sometimes the pressures to do these them into songs gets to me. Sometimes i might repeat okay so i wanna say get excited for that. Okay it's so random because i've recorded several things over the past couple years and then for some some reason again they were shelved and i'm going to pull some stuff out and i will always warn you. I have a bra episode coming up. That's really exciting that i just kind of forgot about so just be on the lookout..
