"Angles especially around some of the remote stuff. A lot of things you guys do work with like Rovers. You talked about spirit just to have a conversation with those things is like we complain about late and senior website was slow or I was playing this game and it was hard because there was. Two hundred milliseconds of latency. There's different kinds of latency out in space. Right? Wouldn't the speed light is not enough. So he can some of the smart and putting it on rovers and other stuff. Some of this ai work that you're doing. It sounds like it might have some lakes Ai I. Hope. So and we think it does too. So Michael, basically the work that. We're doing for your listeners. We have a project that we've been investigating now. So let's fast forward the clock rovers nowadays the last one that landed on the planet. I won't say that we shipped because we just shipped one, which we'll talk about called does a couple of weeks. The right we did pandemic shipping and launching of rockets, Rovers, new fad but yes, for pre. That pre pandemic in two thousand, twelve, we ship the the Mars Science Laboratory or the Curiosity Rover, and that one is about. So spirited opportunity just the size them ver- you know your listeners it's about the size if you have kids of one of those cars that you push maybe or something like that or maybe like a power wheel big wheel type of thing that size. Of Spirit and opportunity the MSL rover is about the size of a small car like Volkswagen bug and if you came to jpl and it was open to have these some day and things like that, you could walk into our building agency a full scale model of to really get the feel of it but that's the size rover over that we're talking about now that's. Sort of the modern class at them and so twenty, twenty s the perseverance, the launched it's the same size. So we've got MSL still operating spirit and opportunity arts anymore because they were solar-powered MSL is powered basically by nuclear fission uses an rtd power source and things like that. So it doesn't have to worry about solar panels so it can go for quite a while and. Has Been. So it's a great test basically as long as it mechanically is still functioning right? Absolutely and so challenges with mechanical functioning are like, Hey, we learned a lot about the wheels for a car sized thing as we drove over walks in it toward the wheels up, you know and things, and so we did we learned a lot about them if you look at one. Quick Update and twenty twenty as the wheels have little homer simpson speed holes are not speed old but holes to prevent having just track and tread that dies catching on everything and that's just one thing we learned amongst other things. We've got smart engineers JPL. MSL's agree platform to test stuff out on. However let's talk about AIML L. I'm going to dispel some missing rumor so. MSL and space assets and others they all need right we gotta do computing we need a processor and A. And things like that they are running off of an old the what is that the latest? GP probably like a Invidia like twenty eighty something like that. Yeah. Everybody thinks that and I know you're being facetious and I liked the snark it's awesome. But yes, no, and that's the challenge. Everybody thinks that and it's not it's running off of a rats fifty, which is a be a h that's as bad as powerful as a POWERPC chip and process or in so and why real quick y right when we crash something in the government, we've got a congressional inquiry that we have to respond to. This virtual companies do it and we love the commercial companies where partner with them. Now, they don't right they I mean not to say that it doesn't ruin their value stream or their reputation or things like that. But they've got a little bit more flexibility to do testing and stuff like that than we do and so we are risk averse by profile definition, and so because of that, we were only use things that are what we. Call radiation hardened, which means that when it gets up there in space, a space does and cosmic radiation do weird things to your hardware they flip the bids amongst that's the easy stuff they do. They do a lot of other nasty stuff and so you gotta make sure that the hardware works in space and so because of that the technology, the Gartner life cycle for what we could use for that is real behind and so this big. Smart this big. Potentially smart you know and it is smart. They did great things on MSL and they're going to do even greater on twenty twenty is writing off of an old processor. So the I is human in the loop even more. So coupled with the fact that you alluded to, Hey, you know bandwidth latency you think that's an issue the lifetime from Earth to Mars eight minutes round trip. So anything you send to Mars you, gotTa. Weigh eight minutes to figure out what the heck happened or even what happened for your report back. Then you know that's not it doesn't all have to be synchronised. They're asynchronous ways. There are ways to kind of achieved some advantages and key things up, but it's still it's eight minutes basically, and so because of that, there's a video on youtube by the way for your listeners. If you haven't seen it, it's called the seven minutes of terror. Closer to eight. Yeah. Yeah. That's a great one. Yeah. Yeah. That's for the entry descent and landing. When they landed MSL curiosity, they had to use a big sky crane instead of the typical big balloon rap the rover to balloon it let it balance which was the way they did it before it was so big they had to have this elaborate sky crane thing and in that seven minutes when you go into entry descent and landing there seven minutes before you knew, Hey, what the heck happened and all this stuff had to happen autonomously and things like that, which is great. But yeah, normally eight minutes and so if I told you today that the Mars surface operations people use about two. Hundred images a day that are taken from the rover from its NAVC cans, which are camps by the wheels, and it's Mass Cam, which is the big head that take selfies and other things that you see what it's arm. If I told you that today, they only use two hundred images to plan what to do for rover operations. The next day you'd understand why we're bandwidth limited or Ltd what we can process on the reverse sucking them down to the ground and making decisions. What if I told you tomorrow? We'll get close to that nvidia chip maybe not exactly but there's efforts called high-performance space like computing to build a multi-core. GP. Like chip that is radiation hardened. It's a big government project. That has an emulator already that they're making and that we also today have Mars helicopter I'm perseverance, which is a little drone that went along with it that if successful is running a qualcomm snapdragon, which is gp like chip and why are we not fully radiation hardened and all this? It does we've tested in whatever but it's not like has the years and years of testing. Why are we doing that? Because it's a technology demonstration and we have a bigger like the mission is still successful even if Mars Halley you know is not successful with that what you call ingenuity right and I. Suspect that the risk to a little drone helicopter thing

Roku and Peacock made nice. Will HBO Max and Fire TV follow suit?

"So going into last week, what was the status quo of the standoff between Hbo Max Peacock on the Streamer side and then Roku and fire TV on the devices I'd. So it was a rollback to May, which was when if you're Max launched was surprise honestly all of us that HP the Roku Fire TV, we're not going to have the HBO AD and. That's still the case today You know it's been said launch. Max's not been on either of those two devices against super popular like you said, Roku TV, they're really the least expensive streamers out there and you could you know so many people have them on TV's on on the street devices themselves. So and then peacock which debuted nationwide in July also didn't have HBO Max and didn't have. Sorry. Didn't have a Roku or fire TV. So again both those major services both you know had a lot of hype leading up to them in both kind of like. You know they're not on these super popular devices. So last Friday that changed and Roku peacocks deal. So finally, Roku owners can watch peacock just like everybody else right. So what are the I'm sure that you it's been similar for you like me I've even people that work at c net with us have message to me occasionally and been like w why can't I watch the streaming service? On my Roku or on fire, you have you been getting a lot of reader reaction to the fact that. We had readers were really like I think a lot of years that are in the know are Kinda like at this point like they're they're they're they. They know that it's an issue in the they do complain about especially when they hear about new stuff on on either service potentially but we had a discussion internally about the editor's choice award, which is something that we give to products. We really like currently our editor's choice product is a roku streaming stare. and. We're like is worth polling this this this award, you know give them a little bit of time still especially going into the fall season, but you know it's a big issue offer us evaluating these products so yet again it was it was a surprise. People are still kind of mystify that these massive services from the media companies they can't agree to deal to just get the basic APP on their devices. So also, can you talk a little bit about? What are people missing out on Hbo Max Peacock in addition to being new services especially with Max been a little confusing for people to understand any way. It doesn't help if you can't watch these services on like the most popular things that people watch the but give people sense. You know what are they missing out on if they are Roku or fire TV users, what are they missing by not having a up until last week not having access to both HBO Maxine PGA While I. Think Big Picture. You're missing more on peacock the Max at least in the beginning because. If. You're a Roku or a fire TV user. You can get the regular HBO APP still. So you can watch you know all the shows that are on HBO succession, which just one. In the EMMYS did really well, all those hbo things there on both Max and regular HBO. The things that you're missing on MACs are primarily friends which obviously is is the big marquee feature there and those Hbo, Max. Originals. So that's on there. If you're if you're Roku or five TV subscriber, you can't watch those my kids really like the elmo show on for example. Like he gets up at elmo goes and does a late night show. It's called the not. So late show with ELMO and You know we watch that on our apple TV you know the one time we don't use Roku our house right off because you can't you can't watch it on the Roku. With peacock I think their catalog is a is a little bit less compelling overall You know it's a less expensive service. It's free. But. Again, you're missing a lot of their back catalogue ABC has or NBC. Sorry NBC shows. law and order Svu as well as a parks and recreation thirty rock big names like that. You can stream on peacock and you can't get those on other services however for example, those are both of those comedies thirty rock in. Parts of the wreck are on Hulu. Hulu Subscriber, obviously, you got Hulu APP on your fire TV or Roku. So you're not missing quite as much I think if you're a again a Roku Amazon Rtd user with peacock. So you know it's it's it's it's very complicated, and then these services have different tiers right so at the end of the day, it's it's hard to Parse it all and you can get a Lotta these shows on different services. If you look around

The Great Lego Scam

"There's a massive scam going on, but this GAM isn't about the coronavirus or vaccines it's is about Lego. Tom. Glasgow lives in Dayton Ohio and he got scabbed he has three kids, seven eleven and sixteen, and they all love go, which is how he got into trouble. He'd been looking for a Lego X ray resistance fighter for his son that's the spaceship that Luke Skywalker an RTD to fly in star wars and so perusing facebook one day I saw an ad for it for what seemed to be a low but maybe not a too low of a price. and I thought Oh good. Let's grab that real. Quick Tom's is at the time x wings were going for about sixty or seventy dollars but the addy clicked on facebook listed it for a lot less the X. Wing was half price just thirty bucks but when the box arrived in the mail and Tom opened it, he found out that this great praise it came with a big catch. The pieces weren't the same quality they were. They were marsh more flimsy and they didn't have the same tolerances. They didn't go together quite as nicely as regular legos. The. Helmets for some of the mini figures weren't dual mode molded with a transparent pieces and solid pieces. They were just all solid and painted over yellow. Transparent Tom had bought what turned out to be a knockoff Lego set a counterfeit. He admits he may not have paid as much attention to the ads as he should have. But you know like it was this great deal and he trusted that in AD online would just be Like a group, the company that makes Lego in Denmark it more than five and a half billion dollars in sales. Last year like Oh is a huge business but this is not just a toy. Lego is an investment. The company retires it's kits after wild stops making them. So if you buy and hold something really popular and the price goes up, you could make a lot of money.

The Impact of Voice Tech on Human Communication

"What do you think about? Do you have an opinion on the use of human voices with these devices and things like that. In general when you hear a device, should you know it's a device talking to you? Should it be differentiated from human voice are in your mind is the ideal for it to be indistinguishable from human I. think There's two elements I mean there's the the naturalness of the humanist of the voice, and then as knowing it wasn't a human who actually made the. Response. So I think having a human voice is beneficial and I understand the studies have shown that people respond better to human voices that more motive etcetera but I think people should know that they're not talking to a human. They're always talking to something that was designed by human. It still contains human bias. You know these questions not came from somewhere but I don't think people like to be tracked and at this stage in this kind of early stages talented. Build the trust in the TAC. I agree with that and there's no way when you're looking at that device on your countertop that you're like, oh my gosh, I thought there was a person in there there isn't like. To me, I think it's a very interesting question about. Because you can see that like Amazon gave their device a human name Alexa. Supposed to hearken back to the. It's got the hard x so it's easy for it to pick it up and it hearkens back to the library at Alexandria as I understand learn. A. personification and and what's interesting to You got like RTD to see three Po. Those characters would have a different feel to them if they were named Fred and George. Right because. I wonder about the act of naming something and embodying giving. An actual human voice I wonder and again, this is probably one of those things that I'll probably be revealed to be quite provincial. If that is not going to long-term corrosive to the notion of human rights in general. There's anybody thinks so yeah, just. Send a movement against the name Alexa in itself. There's obviously a movement against all these voices having female sounding voices, and now that people are generating these non binary voices. To give it the kind of sound of a robot, but still with those human element so it still sounds personable, but it doesn't necessarily sound like it's emulating. or account to the find real life someone childlike was submissive or any of these characteristics that you might not want to replicate in a robot. Right? You know when Alexa starts to say something and she ramble on something I just tell her to stop just like tell her shut up basically right do you think that affects human interactions more inclined to cut other people off if that just becomes the norm or do you not think that's really an issue. I reckon does to some extent especially, if you have kids who learned from an early age that cater to to have those kind of conversations, the more practice you get with these kinds of woods, the more likely you're going to let them slip into normal conversation with real humans. It does kind of reminded me a little bit of the Duval. Video Games caused people to be violent kind of question that we've been going. Around on and I tend to err on the side of no for that, you can tell the difference between fake onscreen violence and what real violence actually looks like. But when it comes to compensation given, our aim is to make these conversations as life as possible. I'm not sure whether the boundary there is as visible as is noticeable I would be hesitant and if I had kids and they were being extra retail voice assistant. Cut Out. Yeah. You know and it's interesting because we've had to claw early as a species to get to hiding this notion. Of Human Rights this that there are things you do not do to another person no matter what. Entertainment doesn't matter who they are, how bad they are, whatever you just don't do it because being a human nobles view and you wonder what happens if someday you build a device that looks basically ninety percent like a human and talks ninety percent like human and all the rest, and then one day when it's not working and you just throw it in the trash heap, and by Newin, is that corrosive to this very fragile thing we've made that there's something uniquely special about being human, right? You know. I was GONNA. Say I weighed by before she is read the heart of the machine is wonderful book talks about a motive machines, emotional machines, and after reading that book it was it was a good summary of all the different affective computing technologies that are out there at the moment and paint some examples of how they could be used and it did make me think at the end that if you do create these machines are more personable, more natural to interact with the number of fantastic use cases that you can. Use Machines fall well, really open up but at the same time, maybe make appreciate each other as humans because they won't be exact human they'll be nearly human and maybe it's in our interest to make them nearly human but not exactly human. You don't want to cross that threshold and I thought it might be similar to US discovering extraterrestrial life another planet that suddenly win alone sending we've got this other forced to contend with and we appreciate each other a little bit more because maybe that's naive you but that's why. Well I shouldn't familiar with wise and bomb and Eliza. Like the setup for this story is in the sixties, there was just fella named Weisbaum at early computer science guy and he made a chat Bot called Elisa and is a very simple chat bot because the computing power they had and you would say to allies on your touch about it. You would say I'm having a bad day in the program and say, why are you having a bad day and use having a bad day because of my mom is your mom making you had a bad day. And so on and Weissenbach bomb. Everybody knew it was a program but why isn't bomb saw? People pouring their heart out to it. And it disturbed him so much that he unplugged it and raced it said no because he said when Elisa says I understand. It's a lie because there's no. And there's nothing that understands anything and. oftentimes, the answers that they put in these systems. Where the devices purport to have preferences or things they like or don't like. I find it creepy and again, maybe that's just my I'm kind of Weissenbach. Of person there. There was this twilight zone episode back in the sixties where. Sky Stranded on some penal planet all by himself in solitary and they bring him a robot to keep him company, and then he gets a pardon because he turns out he didn't do it and they send to spaceship to get him picking up and they only have enough wait for him. You can't take his robot with him and so he says I'm not going I'm staying until I don't know that it's a great time to have those conversations because all of these are still open questions. I hope the technology develops in a thoughtful way and. You know not just like, Hey, we can make sound exactly like a person and give it a person's name and have it purport to have feelings let's do it because people want that

"Welcome to you now. Podcast where we discussed stories in science and Tech. Make US ask exactly that everyone thinks for listening. I'm your host Stephanie Educator in Science Aficionado and I'm Michael Programmer Technology Good Afternoon Stephanie. What'S UP Well have you ever been stung by new murderer when it's yet have you now yet? I but Not going outside anymore. Never leave your home and you should be okay. Yeah no I know that a lot of people are still dealing with the coronavirus right now. I am just so grateful that there are smarter people than me out there looking for ways to help you know. Find new cures so just wanted to quickly mention I ran across one. That's in my on the Monitor. Ut Austin that's where. I graduated from Hook Them. Horns there are. There's a professor out there he's Actually GonNa Cure Krona virus with a Momma's Rama's yeah. Yeah Yeah you didn't know this but are actually on some pretty amazing creatures because over the past years to hold on the face masks. I don't understand. Yeah Their Superhero Llamas. So we can actually They found Antibody produced by these llamas and it basically binds tightly to the protein on on cove. It so that it it can attack you and so there is a potential treatment that they could Produce these antibodies mass quantity and distribute them to people who are at risk or who have already been diagnosed whereas you know obviously people are working on a vaccine which is good But not everybody might have access or want to get this vaccine so have a Lotta Shield Shield Allama Yeah we all need to get our own personal a basically no they are in the preclinical studies right. Now so they're testing it in hamsters and a non human primates which I thought was an interesting way to say you know monkeys there phrase before. Yeah so they're they're going to try it out and see if it could potentially be a treatment for us so yeah Llamas Obama's I have problems llamas or any other variant of whatever species a lobbyist so Stephanie Was Star Wars. Movie date here. Well we were watching star wars movie last week. Actually for a May the fourth be with you. Yes I mean. Everyone wants to start saying I just heard there. There really isn't a new one. I forget the forget. The woman's name is GonNa help write it but it seems promising either way it does break my heart a little bit. Though that when my kids think of Star Wars they think of the you know the. The newer movies is more than the ones that we are up with. I'm not sure I know if my kids know what star wars is it was. It was a happy meal toy for a little while when the movie was added December. Yeah they got. They got the toys. These little stupid star wars looks like a little longer thing but it's not really a Hologram is dumb. But they're still a bit young yeah. It was an awkward conversation. You know when Antigen kind of goes on his rage and kills like the whole village and everything he. He's the bad guy it's weird. Yeah it's definitely I mean. People talk about the right order to watch star wars and all that when you show it to your kids but I don't know you just never replicate how how we came just hours. Not even I mean even necessarily. It's it's so old. I watched all the star wars before I came out on ninety nine but I was seventeen when when episode one came out so like I knew. All the twists stopped but not it wasn't like ingrained the same way it was like you grew up. Watch if you're a teenager. We saw star Wars Serb return. Whatever yeah so for my parents they got to see it in the movie theater for the first time and I just kind of watched it on video. Yeah you Kinda delegates you. I don't know if I don't I don't remember. I was young. Probably younger than maybe. What the target you had you got and see the movie but like the elevators father. I don't know if that hits the same way. Twenty years later as does what did you know in the graphics of the silly laser. That's it to like. It was space fights and his lightsaber stuff. That was like ingrained culture by the time he saw it and now kids like the stuff is but what does that. Yeah like. My daughter was asking watching this movie and she was like wait. A minute is good or bad guy. And it's like well just star. Just keep watching and you'll see you know it's not going to have to have the same effect for her because she is starting out with a an thinking of him as a good guy you know whereas we came from the opposite and love okay. Darth vader was definitely the bad guy. And then okay. Let's watch the the PREQUELS and like oh. He used to be a good guy. It's a completely different experience. Yes we isn't it. I always like stuff like that when you come to. I mean I wish the movies were better than the first three really star wars. Isn't that great? A movie from a cinematic like sinophile. Kyp- story Oh critic is interesting. How the stories come out differently the way you watch them and it's always neat when you can watch something different watering a different experience and learn more I was so but specifically joints. You'll have joins now right. You have a little helper. Droid running around. I mean we do have like NBA's and this thing but rt to is going to be probably one of the most beloved star wars characters. Maybe the only put a number one. Yes I would agree with that Do you lake deviate will ever come close to rtd to it with the generation. Now well I guess I guess ask arcades kind of thing but like archie. Just been around forever. And he's like the he's the prototype of the first one that we were really introduced to and fall in love with his beeps and stuff and you know he. He's the U. N. title that. I'm not nerdy enough to know but like he gets in the back of the starship and he's helping guide and will connect to the computer. He's like he's a he's a helper droid and that's something that people are thinking about now is. Are we going to need help? A robots getting around

Expose with what we what was going to the cinema of unease great movies banking then and hasn't been a lot since then but it's still a very select kind of universe down there and and united something people talk about law in strive to be So yeah among crowds in your community and I think title what Katie said the same thing at the Oscars. I have to say though. Your Dad loves since cinema. Your Dad loves film. As you're growing up clearly has a love of all things. You know acting films cinema. That had the rub off on you. Talk about his love of the cinema in movies and how that might have impacted your love of movies and got to where you got you to where you are. Today he was a he mental Talks about a lot which I see but you know you eat a lot of film. Generals around discussion was the thing. We'd always father was very interesting. She against you as a Sanath Tinder. Coaching and a lot of discussion with him and exposure to things. That will come. Unusual film. Specially like a two lane blacktop. Very early on the picture and it still remains to be one of my favorite movies on but yeah I remember funnily the early days of cinema discovered with day so I have to ask you just as we hear terms all the time. Those of us on the outside not familiar with the industry. Is there a difference between a DP director of photography and the cinematographer the same thing or are they different in any way? There's more is a more European called fries. Photography dirctor photography's squealing. Hollywood comb Tune and you have this really interesting beginning where you're enrolled in school. You're old in film school and you know you reach a point mentally in your life where you say you know what I can kind of and I think this is how it unfolded where chief my goals without having to get a degree from school without having to get this degree so you ended up leaving. Just talk a little bit about a clarity Klein from the school though pretty much like you gotta listen. You WanNa be a cinema Taga. We can't teach you a cinematography specific stream. It was much more of a A Meta film school. That was more about Criticism and you know it was associated with hoping to find out school so they simply didn't have the tools to teach me technique. I needed to learn so it was an agreement between both of us and they are answered. The time was like listen. You need to discard join the industry which which is was then served me the only way forward to become listen in New Zealand at the time. Nigel was that a tough. Call for you to say you know what I could do this without degree. I don't need school to get where I WANNA be. No it wasn't. It was frustrated a little bit with the school at the time. And I've been there for a couple years and it seemed like exciting to go during the real world and I wouldn't have load magazines so it was. It was time the time it was fine and I have no regrets looking back. You know. It's I'm not dissing foam. Schools folk schools are incredibly places. In fact I went to the Australian After that film school because it was specific to cinematography but I think the schools are the ticket you get out of it agree or whatever. It doesn't really mean much. It's the experience of a narrative thinking film living breathing film being rounded making mistakes. That's welcome schools. And I have to believe Nigel. Things like the report you had with your father and his love of cinema and how that kind of transcended to you I have to believe that also had an impact on where you are today. It was always fung love of movies rather than a love whole photography. More importantly announce a combination of two and. I don't know if he's still with us or not. Niger but did your dad grow to see how successful you became your accomplishments. Everything you've achieved in life. Yeah Almond data. Solar added love a actually went back in time this year. For Christmas there was a screening of peanut butter Falcon at the little village that we live in a house in New Zealand. So early lovely time to bring it back and share. The local people in impact audience and everyone was very excited. So yeah it's it's it's it's it's lovely to Ivan they're on. I'm proud to Sharm suffering growth. Get to make stuff. Your Dad's love a film aside. Nigel the fact that you know. His son has become so successful and achieved so much. I mean that has to add so much to his already standing love for movies and cinema etc humour is yet years he loves and I'm very proud to be able to share. My sister's also direct a by left sharing that with him so clearly in your life. You've you've made tons of sacrifices commitments. You know dealing with hardships really kind of putting yourself out there whether it's dropping out of film school or sacrifices being away from family for long periods of time that I'll certainly has to add up. Nigel is there a way to handle deal with manage those sacrifices so it doesn't really weigh on people in the long run? Weigh on you when loved ones in your life too. I think are more privileged than a sacrifice whenever I have the privileged to work on something that I'm passionate about. That is that is amazing. I'm the sacrifices don't so much that the difficulty with the lifestyle to be honest this is making choices and putting yourself in a place where you can afford to make choices. And sometimes that's easy sometimes. It's not as easy especially now. I have a family. It's it's tougher. Detained things down but that is the for me. Is the secret to to to to being a full stock and can believe in work is that you have your -tunities to do the things we want to inhibit. You have saved US off. Open away that you had the opportunity to turn things you don't want to do down because Biz nothing worse than doing things you don't you don't passionate about. I've always had the privilege of doing this passionate place it's never been like. Oh I'm GONNA work now. You're so it's it's Anita feels like I'm GonNa Work of a day. It's it's just it's what I wanted to choice maiden and I think that's a healthy thing which making films is not high is not easy and needs to be able to wake up every morning inside Anyone do this Les Han Solo to do the best job possible. And that's why even went around to expes so this whole there is literally. I really love your comments on passion. Nigel because I see that all the time in the podcasting world or people trying to be something. They're not. Is there a movie or an actor that did it for you? We talked about Your Dad's passion. Was there that type of movie actor for you. It's a law of movies in a lot of people but the standout from as well as tune. Blacktop been tablets Correctly Y on. It was something about seeing that movie that time when I was about thirteen It was it was. It was a simple phone. It was elegant foam. The story was very simple. Skase but enough and those meditation to it just didn't feel like a regular American film. It felt like an Italian film. Which should sort of course MONTIEL's making this Spaghetti Westerns? And this is at that time and yet there's something about the simplicity clarity the study of and the the space in that avoid been really attracted to. I'm I'm very attracted to these stalls. Foams are and nets. That's really what I want to make thumbs with spice in time that have a major elements Humanity people on. And that's that's one of those. You Know Nigel as I look at. Your filmography Lord of the Rings True Detective. Two different seasons The unbelievably awesome The peanut butter Falcon. But when is the moment that comes for Nigel where you were you realize you know what I've made it at? Maybe after completing a certain. Was there a certain project you completed where you know the realization comes to you know what? I'm pretty good at this. I I could do this for a living. I mean the first film. I shot which was very young. I did Stick Mamie plays was at once the most difficult thing most hiring for the done but it was the most rewarding in wonderful in that was just feeling that existed in every day and challenged Wasn't right feeling and Amid repeated since I think that's just the first Things new every tax for hangers new in its unconquerable Today the more who make the issue of easier gets my vote. But that's some garment profoundly me and I kinda missed exhaustion. Sometimes when it comes back after a tough day will solve metallocenes. What then I I do. Welcome and embrace

HealthTech - The Wearable Reducing Hospital Readmissions

"Today, I want to turn my attention back to health tech. Current health recently announced that he's a powered remote patient monitoring wearable device. Receive class to clearance from the US food and Drug administration, the FDA for hospital care, and this current wireless device provides continuous ICU level patient monitoring, which essentially enables clinicians to better determine the hell trajectory and intervene early an ultimate -ly improve patient outcomes and current health. Ceo, Christopher mcken has been on the podcast before. But I invite him back on again today. So we can discuss the advancements being made in healthcare an IOT and out together, the helping improve patient care so book up and hold on tight as I beam your ears all the way to Edinburgh in Scotland. So we can speak with Christopher mcken CEO at current health. So massive warm. Welcome back to the show. Chris can you tell snooze? Labat who you are. And what you do. Yeah. Hi, Neal delighted to be buying. I'm trust me cannon. I'm the CEO and cool friend or of current health. And I think the last thing we would on your show we were knowing not forty but we've saying helpfully changed name though to not cut it. We health tech company based in Edinburgh and New York, raise the eleven million dollars and employees currently people although were were growing rapidly at the moment. Now, we last spoke on I think it was episode six hundred sixty seven where he revealed your ally powered patient monitor solution and just went on it Mr. episode, can you give them a quick overview of what current health is. Maybe the story behind your rebranding and the problems that you set out to solve a cool. And so my my win by in the computer science and then medicine, and I started the company with my cool brendor actually is a major who shouldn't. And the the problem are our meshing that we had was really simple. We just wanted to help help them to identify patients the at risk of getting that on Ilia point. And Ray, no, the don't really have a way of minting visibility of patient hell on those signing when that patient is stopping to deteriorate on and getting to go and see that patient Elliot here that is both an exact. So we do is winnable on the upper arm of the patient. We monitor them across a whole bunch of ideological matrix where and super high accuracy, so things like oceans accusation and responded to rate, and we integrate with a bunch of other devices are in the body from things like Spiro McRae or wait. And then we take all of that information and use it under signed as a patient health trajectory, and can we LA are a health care professional much much jelly appoint than currently possible. So they can intervene L E R, and we rebranded because our or existing name Billick. It didn't really really set with what we were trying to achieve then really mean anything until I actually am. We just happen to the dot com. The name and went with it. So we decided that we would we would try and fight the name that was more fighting for the mesh that we were trying to achieve and we went with Conan hill. I playoffs a fantastic move as well. The difference between snap Fulton and current health. You just know exactly what it is straight away. Yeah. We we think we feel much happier with it. And since we last spoke you recently, an absent your AI, powered remote patient monitoring wells device receive class to clearance from the US food and Drug administration the FDA old for hospital offer hospital care. I mean, that's an incredibly big deal for you. You guys he told me a little bit more about what that means for you at current house. Yeah. I mean, it was an amazing. My also in forest is the culmination of 'em yields of walk on the part of our team, and we're one of a very very small number of and devices anywhere in the world. Weser vacation, and it gives us actor the US market, but it's also an enormous validation point from and one of the world's most most diligent regulate does it was a huge amount of work and photos together, and it was a huge sum Hove stamp of approval for his when we actually go to 'em celebration for the team and all the work that the. It feels like a huge step in the right direction. But how did you see the advancements in healthcare, and I oversee and how to get how do you think that can all actually improve patient care and move to more than like a proactive approach to healthcare all the traditional reactive? Yeah. Well, I think if you will through waned one hundred years the disease that we saw for indict from where different than the RTD and infant mentality was higher and hundred years ago and life expectancy was lore, and we tended to die quick are from shore or Talamo Lucy's whereas today, thanks to the incredible environments and science and medicine, we can all live longer disease that would have been a death sentence one hundred years ago, or no, long-term lovable and chronic. And that's great. But the flip side of that is or health systems are no facing real strain from an older population who have disease that require and more frequent contact on long management. So, you know, shoe

"And instead you can use this money. To help with a babysitter. To help offset cost a private tutor offset the cost of a private school offset, the cost of some sort of educational program. Offset the cost of online education. You can use this money. Now, why doesn't the board do this? It's their call. They could make it very clear it could be part of their plan. And could you imagine if they had planned it because they've got all sorts of contingency plans. And in the folks at GPS have been figuring out. Well, what do we do if there's a strike? What do we do as a kids? What do we do with empty classrooms? How do we keep them entertained and not killing each other? How do we feed them? How do we try to give them some bit of education? This goes a long way to that Majid if they were as they were laying down those plans. They said, well, we're gonna have strikeout Shire's. If there's a strike that money that would be spent on teachers will go towards strike vouchers. And what those strike vouchers. We. The union would understand. Oh, we're not going to get back pay. What an amazing motivator when you know, you're not gonna get back pay in the private sector people go on strike. They don't get back pay because nobody's buying their product the private sector. You're not forced to pay in the public sector. We this opposed customers are still paying in paying and paying even though the money's not being used use the money for the kids. It's a pretty simple idea. Tell me why this wooden work. Tell me why you wouldn't like it. Why did the governor? Let this strike happen. Why did the governor let this strike happen? There's something in Colorado law government goes too. Was to strike the. Governor usually can force it into binding arbitration to one of the reasons why lots of companies love to strike lots of governments to strike like RTD because usually the democratic governor sends it to arbitration, and it's binding and whoever the whatever the arbiter says goes. We talk a little bit about the last RTD strikers. Oh, my God could could've been a decade ago already. The one before that was in the early nineteen nineties interestingly when RTD had a bus strike back then traffic actually got better because the lumbering buses weren't clogging. The roads. Well, there was a strike in the two thousands. It was an embarrassment for the union. Here's why. By the time that they're a second strike in the two thousands came RTD already contracted out nearly half of its service nearly half which means those private operators. Who run the same buses same route same schedule same uniform same everything they were still operating RTD? Then said, all right. We're going to contract with you guys to run these backbone routes up and down colefax some of the major regional routes because there wasn't one union that covered every single bus driver. The union only covered about half the bus drivers private operators did the rest. The the strike lasted like a d and a half or something. And the union caved. I mean, they got some sort of face saving something, but they caved because RTD was getting the job done with half the people and still doing the bigger routes the more important routes. What would happen? If DPS did the same thing here. What would happen if GPS said? All right. Well, if you're not teaching we're going to give the money directly to the parents.

Selden acid free throw line jumpers too. Strong rebound tapped out by Lopez right over to Hutchison hutcherson throws left side to RTD guarded out there by Monte Moore's bounce pass on the elbow to Lopez. One on one with Lyles. He starts backing down turnaround sweeping hook shots up in in. Wow. Lead down to one twenty six to twenty five up the right side as Martine Morris. Top of the key to Mason Plumlee Plumlee throws it over to Gary Harris gets Plumlee pick Harris will shoot at three jumpers way. Off. The Mark hit the rubber to the bottom of the backboard left side is to Bari Parker hands off behind him to Selden leans in layup. No good. Offensive foul whistled against seldom how I'm gonna tell you what. There's no way Lyles was out of that semicircle though. No easy. Don't see. This. Either goes up and tries to readjust the shot in the air. Okay. Whistle there against Chicago? Here comes bonday. Moore's for Denver one minute left to go in the first by one twenty six to twenty five. There's a high pick from Trey Lyles Monte shoot three jumpers. No, good, rebound tapped and grabbed by Lopez outlook pass over the Jabari. Parker. Parker has it up the right side out there by trae Lyles fake the drive throws back behind him. Archie stops free throw line extended back over to Parker whistle and a foul called on Monte Morris. So the nuggets switch that action right at the top. It was kind of a hand off whatever. Actually, it's a swish it Monte more on Barak Parker when the ball got back to Jabbari Monte just grabbed them rather than allowing him to get all the way to get to the real. Jabbari Parker to the free throw line and the loss against the Lakers. The other night eighteen points on seven of ten shooting. That's the most points. He scored since December first free throw number one form is up in right? He's had a it's been a saga with Tamari Parker at this particular coach boiling who basically cut his playing time to nothing when he came in and got it. He got injured. But this is the reason why is back on the court. There was a lot of trade talk around him as well window Carter juniors who got hurt might have been might have been him. Yep. Second free throw for Parker's up in nuggets. Now trail twenty seven to twenty six Denver could go to one that got a hurry Harris gets it down the lane Bank shot is up in wanted to whistle. No foul called by Ed Malloy. And now the nuggets will get the two for one barring an offensive rebound. That was a foul that was blatantly obvious to the right side of the mid court circles. RTD Shacklock at ten gets a high pick from Lopez throws left side over the Parker. Parker in the corner to sell the catch and go in the paint goes back to Archie down the corner Parker and a step back. That one's good nine point one seconds left here for Denver thirty to twenty eight. The nuggets are down the last two I quarters for Denver. They've given up eighty one points. I right side is Lyles Lyles stutter step at a drive goes to the baseline can't shoot kick out. Three Montek missed it. So the Denver Nuggets trail to the ten win. "Ever was done. Exactly. Yeah. They're like, you know, taking all these special effect shots from different parts of the movie and making all those things happen at one time. Whereas in the movie, they had ten different droids. Each one did one thing and the same thing for like the BB eight that you always joked about the ball rolling around poop hat, like in the actual movie, that was you saw combination of pup. It'd version CG version, you know, like one with that's remote control to a point. And so none of the ones that the actually used it all the things, but people have made a real one, multiple ones that do all of those things. It's amazing just to see how people can take an idea that's fantasy and just turn it into an actual. People could actually make it real. Can I ask you? Do you happen to know where the I've been to industrial light magic and I don't remember seeing the RTD to there, but do you know where the ridge twenty or fifty are. They've been sold into private hands. I, I don't know. I would imagine they have the crazy archive like Lucasfilm has this archive with all sorts of stuff, and I'm sure most of them are there, but some of them probably got sold off. I don't really know. Has there ever been is there is there wet is there must be a convention where all your to get together and drive them around. Well, I mean, anytime that there's a get together, they the clubs like the local kind of regional clubs will come and bring all of their droid. So every maker faire has a bunch of them there. I mean, it's absolutely meaningless. And we're going to break down. Exactly what it is. She has said we're gonna break down where the issues are. And then where I think we need to go where do I think we need to go? I think we need to go to confirmation because the Democratic Party has done something horrific here and the trolls can complain, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. They don't have the argument. "With the exception of a sprinkle here, and there you should be okay. Once against the afternoon hours, though, just like yesterday, we're going to build a new spotty downpours. Maybe a little bit of lightning mixed in. But we are not expecting any severe weather, but some of these downpours could provide some localized flooding across parts of the area. Now as we transition into Saturday and Sunday, it's more of a steady rain where the rain being heavy at times, especially Saturday evening into the overnight hours into Sunday morning. And by the time, the rain tapers off by mid morning on Sunday. We're looking at probably about two to four inches of rain widespread, but I would expect probably some area navy gets five even six inches of rain. So this is a good old fashioned soaking flash flooding certainly going to be a possibility that in the coming days next week. Even after the rain ends we'll watch a lot of those rivers start to rise. And of course, all that water flows. Downstate so river flooding might become more of an issue. So certainly rain gear is going to be needed. Saturday's probably the worst day of the two on Sunday. "Well, let's actually find out what's going on, especially in children. There's that there's panda's which is a brain encephalitis caused by strip that has children are susceptible to which can cause like immediate behavioral changes. Right. I wonder if there was something like a strip outbreak. I think it was just fragile masculinity, but what possibly. Just to just depend fear of witching Zack. Aki wants to know is antibiotic resistance, a critical issue, heck yes. Okay. Oh, I can say hell hell yet even say yes. We don't cuss on our guests. So this is new the microphone? Fuck. Yes. It's a huge problem. Oh my God. It is. It is one of the scariest problems for sure. Like antibiotic-resistant strep in or staff in hospitals is massively huge antibiotic resistant. My dad got sepsis from antibiotic resistant UTI infection. It was awful antibiotic resistant to rookie Lucy's is Terry. XT RTD. It's what they call it. And what about Mercer Mercer. Exactly. That's staphylococcus aureus in. So now the the fixed that is stopped taking antibiotics, medium viruses. Yeah. So there's definitely like the the doctors shouldn't be prescribing antibiotics for things that they don't know our bacterial. But a large part of the problem too is like the agriculture industry and they're, they use antibiotics profile prophylactically. So we're just going to give all of our cows antibiotics so they don't get sick. And so- prophylactic antibiotic uses a huge issue a well that is helped driving it. So it's not. It's kind of the same thing when you talk about like, how can we solve climate change or stop putting trash everywhere like, yes, we have personal responsibilities, but there's also this systemic responsibility that is not being addressed as much. Right. So on the personal side of things, if you are prescribed antibiotic for something, take the entire course of it, don't don't save a few pills for own case. Next time I have us do that lady that people will do that all the time. Don't do that. Take. Every single pill because that what that does is it basically when you take, let's say, three quarters of your antibiotics, you're gonna kill. This is very basic, but three quarters of the bacteria in your body and your your, your body will fight off the rest of it, but those or it might just be selecting the ones that are resistant. Strongest ones are like, yeah. Oh my God. It's the people who are left at your party at like two in the morning and the worst people go home. Oh, yeah, exactly. I should've left forever ago. Yeah. Yeah. So, okay. So keep kicking him out. It's funny in our healthcare system is such a beautiful thing that I have friends who are like actors who don't have health insurance who are like, oh, if I get strep throat, I just order fish antibiotics online, and you're like, oh, America. You use them in fish tanks, but you can also take him for like, yes, people do that. Like there are whole read at sub threat. Like it's about like this is such a good learning extreme like veterinary antibiotics that you can get for your dogs and cats that are China remind. Yep, don't Don't do do it. it. Well, okay. Jon Wurster an Stephanie Hancock. Both wanted to know, is there any care for the Lone Star tick bite that makes you allergic to me? And do you think there's a possibility that the Lone Star take is Evelyn's way of helping with global warming moving to a red meat produced society? Oh, that's a fun thing to think about, but it's that's just not how evolution works, but you can answer this. Take one. I actually do love every time. It's always brought up as like, oh, every time that someone says, oh, the red meat allergy from onstar. They're like, maybe that's a and I'm like, well, yeah, it's kind of a good thing. I mean, it could be a good thing. So the almost dying part and not a good plus I have. I have some anecdotal evidence, not not personally, but so it seems that the strength of the allergy varies depending on who you are and it might depend on what tick bit you, but some people, it seems to be last decades or even a lifetime. And anytime they re expose themselves from red meat, it's a really bad reaction like NFL axis at cetera..
