"Is probably not going to be an NC double A. in ten years and even with him doing this if he doesn't go far enough, there still may not be an into blamed ten years. I mean, the the question is this I. Mean I don't think it's a coincidence, four gigantic defections to the G. League and they're getting paid. You know relatives peanuts says to the pros couple of hundred thousand here and there. I don't think it's a coincidence that conversations happening again at the same time, you know RJ Hampton Lamelo Ball, go over to Australia. So you're starting to see these floodgates star to open up and again tick tick tick they gotta figure this thing out sooner rather than later Brandt Brandon Jennings started all that about ten years ago. Didn't he did he did I mean he had no choice because he didn't he didn't qualify academically to play Tarazona. These kids are actually going when they have the option to play other schools and I've said listen. Is College basketball going to take a hit missing Isaiah Todd Jalen Green and I Day Sean Knicks is a really good player who's going to go to UCLA. Yeah but it was fine without Lebron. So let let's not get carried away. You're still gonNA watch duke no matter WHO's plan you're still going to watch Kansas no matter WHO's flying my bigger concern is why is Adam Silver doing this? Because if he wants to, he could pay fifty kids two hundred grand apiece if he wanted to. If he really truly believes that it's a better avenue to go to this new G. League developmental program than it is to go to college I don't think he's going to do that I think we're GONNA see five to ten kids a year from now do this you league program especially of Jalen Green gets drafted high and some of the other kids get drafted high ultimately that's the biggest measure of success. Why would he by that feeds him I mean you know there's there's a tension or align that you don't cross the NBA currently has a free developmental system called college basketball, right? Why would you screw that up I? Don't get why Adam silver is doing this because you're at the marketing is much better. You already have jalen green coming in to. A lot of the NBA GM's called me right after it happened jailing green they were like we don't want this. We'd much rather have a kid who's been in college for a year and already has. The brand and he's much more ready than being in the G. League Developmental Program We don't know at that point they were scared of who going to coach it or it's going to run it. They felt like it's much better to have a kid socially is well in college for a year Then Jonas g league developmental program where they're going to be around four or five other kids not play competitively all the time against other schools. So I listen I, don't get. APODACA dynamically. Want about whether these student athletes are pending classes, but you don't want to deprive the opportunity of of a four year education whether they choose to complete it or not is up to them but just like with Hall of fame candidates, the professor, the the rate of success of making it in professional sports is is abysmally low many are called fewer chosen, and if you go to if you're going to create a an exodus from big time college basketball to a minor league system, you can be putting a lot of African American men. Into situations where there neither playing professional ball at the end of the day or getting the right or getting a college education which is essential to meet. The Marketplace Listen Jalen Greens probably going to be fine. I mean he's terrific player..

"Pacific. Let's get with Jeff Goodman from stadium. Jeff how many guys are they actually going to have on this G. League select team? I think they want five. I think the the ideal number is five but you know again they got to convince the Reich asked to to make the jump Knicks was obviously big onto them because not only get him but you took him from Ucla and to me. He's one of the more Entertaining players to watch because he just makes people better. And that's kind of what you want out of that program. You're going to want to sell the fact that. Hey here's a guy when he gets drafted which I. I don't know where he'll get drafted. You know a year and a half from now but I think you could sell the fact that look at look at his. I Q look at what we did for him. Even if they didn't do much they could sell the fact that This kid is is ready from an I q standpoint to play at the next level. Yeah I I guess my my you know so. It's not the five guys they select. It's the and then maybe not this year but in coming years it becomes how many kids think they're one of those five guys they're going to select and does that then because that's really the issue with all of this stuff. It's never the top five guys that went straight from high school to the pros. It was everybody else who's never the top five one in Duns. It was all these other kids. That's one thing that's crazy. Transfer culture like if you're not leading your team in scoring or shots as a freshman you gotta transfer because as a one. You should be a one in done. That's really kind of what's at issue here. So are they going to officially cabinet a number like what what is do you? Do you know what the actual plan is? We don't know we don't know listen to go back to your point. I thought it is interesting because you know years ago before they went with a one and done rule and yet kids going straight out of high school to College. I look back and you know seven or eight guys There weren't that many that declared towards the end of that thing but now our culture is so different than it was in two thousand and three four With social media. And everything else that you're right you could be looking at thirty or forty kids that try to make the jump in and you've got to have something in place to me Tell them to at least go back. You know go to college even if they make if they make a mistake or what they think is a mistake And Go this route but I just read my big question to you. And the thing I've been racking my brain four is why is Adam Sober? Doing this is doing this to make the G. League relevant or the G. League programme relevant. Is he doing 'cause he honestly was upset? That RJ Hampton Lamelo ball went. Overseas is doing because he thinks this is a better avenue to prepare kids then college what is it. I I do think that it was. The we travel would Australia to see a couple of kids play when we should have our. We have our. It's this we have our own developmental program here right and I don't like what what's interesting to me. Is that kind of buried in this? Whole thing is the fact that the players and the owners could not agree on getting rid of the one and done. The owners liked the one and done rule. They guys to go to college. Because otherwise you make you make a mistake and anybody who draft you're GONNA at some point you're going to have to play and owners expect you to play that guy early on and some of these guys are just not ready and you know maybe this. I just this is trying to please. Everybody don't players older player. You more guys taking your jobs in the League picking your job yes and they also realize those guys are just not re- like it's it's the both now they taking jobs but they're also taking jobs before they're even close to being ready even might take. You could be remembered like that was not going during. This is doing this because he realizes he's screwed up a couple of years ago by saying we're going to push this back to to high school the NBA. And then he thought it through and he got some feedback. And everybody's kind of like. Hey you know what? Maybe nobody really wants this. So let's try something different and this is kind of an alternative to it to make sure that our after a year in this unique program. They're more ready to play in the NBA. Yes which which I guess. You're okay with like look. All of this stuff is great. But what's really? There's so many things that college basketball provides that you cannot artificially create you just can't and you know one. I want to see a guy dominate people at his age. I don't WanNa see him playing. I like the idea of playing against men but I don't have you know you play against college. Men as well are the college systems Is it the same game like no and I do. Think the NCAA's hurt itself by putting restrictions on how much time a kid can spend with his basketball coach which is crazy because like on one hand. The same people who want this to happen are the same people who go. If you didn't have a twenty hour rule or the eight hour rule in the off season. He's like well. These kids are just abused like their kids are in the gym all day. Regardless the only question is going to coach with it the best part of it is. Is that the republic team who runs the G. League in his out there trying to pluck kids from college. His son is going to Virginia next year as a freshman and really good player. But but why are you not bringing your son to this program? It's better than college. Well I don't think he thinks it's better. I don't think he thinks it's better than college. And shreeves interesting one right. He was a one and done but he went back. His degree got his master's degree like he benefited greatly from it. I don't think he obviously loves to college there. There's a ton of hypocrisy to it. They're just is What do you do you think that the new name and likeness rule change changes any does it. How does it? It's GonNa Change? Something wants to change what we we don't know all they've done right now. It said I You know they can. They can get endorsements third party endorsements they can set up their own businesses They can do things of that nature but they haven't put any details and anything to it yet. I think that's GonNa be the kid you know my thought Going forward was like okay. What happens your head coach? Doug and your head coach at you know down the road there. Lmu Or something. Like that. And I run an auto dealership and and I got a ton of money and I'm a booster army boy right. Why can't you just tell me? Can you do me a favor? The number one part of the country can. Can we offer a million dollars? And we're gonna we're gonna run this we're gonna we're gonna dominate. Lmu again we'll be back like the old days and we're gonNA pay per kids. Well how how is he gonNA stop that? Where are they going to decide is too much? Are they going to cap? It is data loud. If you're a coach can you I mean I just and for people who are people who say people who say like well you can cap it and one of the statements? Was you know like it's got to be a reasonable amount? Remember the last time. They tried to cap something in. Ncaa was when they had the restricted earnings coach. And of course all those guys at a class action lawsuit was disaster. Lost a bunch of money. Yeah I don't know what you do. I do know that. Then you know. You can't have conflicting brands. So does that mean if if a car dealership is the official car dealership of the program. Well then you can't do a car dealership ad with any other car dealership right. You can only do with certain stipulations and a lot of them and the Internet could not answer any of that. This morning are tall because they haven't figured that out. I think what they were trying to do today was hey listen everybody. We're moving forward with us. World King some level of getting paid up your name image likeness. We're not sure the details we still gotTA figure that out. Well that's the hard part to be honest Does it. Does it decrease cheating in college basketball? I don't think so I mean again. I don't think it changes it at all. I think you know you're going to have Again coaches trying to circumvent the rules. I'll give you a good example If I'm a a head coach in in college who may be played in the NBA? And I'm GonNa mid major level. I'm not going to say the name. There's a few of them out there While we continue Terry Porter Damon Star Donyell Marshall Their Portland reporters fighting for his job. Right now Portland. He's got I don't know how many million dollars in the bank. Why can't he decided? Hey you know what I want to keep coaching. I'M GONNA slip a half a million To my buddy who's running that car dealership and he in turn is going to basically offer it and I'm going to say to this recruit. Hey once you get our campus you got a half a million dollar deal waiting for you. What does he have to SA- understand why his main Dar's but you can't all I'm saying is he can if he's the coach and he wants to get this thing done and he's got a bank account of fifty million or a hundred million? Why can't he just take some of his own money? Which is illegal. The schools can't pay the kids directly. He's giving it to somebody that that runs our company and basically telling them to legally be able to induce it to the kid. Yes coaches have. Never been guys that come out of their own pockets. That's one thing so but if you're looking at the end game in the end game is nine only my job but I might be able to get a bigger job. Might be able to get a job for two or three million a year. You're just betting on yourself at that point and saying I'm GonNa Make my program relevant. I'M GONNA fight. I'm at least going to beat all the other schools in my league. I May Not Be Kentucky Duke or the Big Boys but if I'm GONNA mid Major League outbid everybody else so why would you would be if they're gonNA make you know a couple hundred thousand dollars as opposed to ten thousand? I think this can really help the mid majors. Who are the elite mid majors? And like I don't know if you WANNA call Creighton a high major fine I if I'm a crate..

"But if you if you if you got you go to Lexington and a recruiting weekend and the guy who's your host goes and does an appearance. It gets couple grand cash in his pocket. I think that's a pretty good recruiting inducement. Yes but if you want if you want to. You know advertise for Lexington Ford Under the way this is described if it all goes through then can I guess still get back to this and I. We were moving this direction. I think it's the right thing to do but I also really question the dollars. I just wonder how much money is out there. There'll be some and some players will get some by. I just don't think it's going to be what people envision There may be more dollars to be made in social media something that I'm trying to understand more and more through instagram. And and you know The way people can be influencers and stuff like that. That might be where more of the money is made in your world in this new generation than it is in just straight advertising places but I will tell you there's certain places go to Chicago right where you're in Chicago. There are very few bears. Bulls hawks you know cubs and white sox do add let alone a one from the Paul northwestern even regionally Illinois so You Know Boston thing New York same thing so a lot of these pockets around the country. La You know it'd be very good. Tell me if you're you're in. La How many people really know all the fires USC and Ucla yet? They obviously know the Lakers. And the clippers The dodgers but You know it's GonNa be really hard. Were those schools in pro dominated markets to get back those kind of endorsement. Yeah I also think that if you're a Nike school you can't do an adidas thing right so I do wonder if you can actually do the competing car ads if there's an official car dealer of school or of the of the program right there. There's a there's right so you're like and then like there's then there's the the elephant in the room is the taxes you know like right now you have you operating a tax free shelter but endorsements is not on a tax free shelter has stand on the call on. Wednesday made that very clear when he answered the question on this committee and he said student athletes we'll be accountable to the IRS. Yeah I it's just. It is a bag of worms. "But it's good and it's not like a long read either. It's it's quick but I like it was recommended to me in very very powerful book. Sounds great man. I'm going at this thinking about. That book sounds awesome and it has a bar in there. It basically it has a has a statement that basically says the most important person in your life their their opinion so basically think as a kid the most important person in your life is your parents usually. So you're striving you know to basically make them happy like their opinion of you is what you value most and then as you get older and Kinda shift into the working world your coworkers opinions of you is kind of what you value most Kinda shifts and it talks about that that shift. Can you relate to that though because you're in such a unique field like your coworkers or your teammates? So do you relate to that. Yeah in a sense of like I compare it to this as a basketball player. Although I don't care what people think about me because I've reached a point where I just go live my life and I know who I am and I'm confident comfortable who I am but when you're younger you want to you want approval by your peers. You WanNa be stamped like when another player says you're nice or like he's like that makes you feel good on the inside because they play with me there in the same level they see everybody against everybody like people always say like we know. Who's who as a player you know. Who's real has a journalist. You know who's good journalists and who's not so when you get approval by your peers teammates but people that work in the same Same career as you think it means more than a casual fan or someone just saying like. Oh He's nice. You appreciate the casual family life and your game but you really appreciate it when when there's an expert who does the same stuff as you saying that you're you're good at it and they sign off on you so I I kind of like I agreed with agreed with that part that point of it because although we're all self sufficient and self and self Secure after a certain point. Lives like you do love to hear encouragement and good things From your peers especially Even if it's co workers like I can imagine if I worked at nine to five. I would like to be recognized for being good at my nine to five by my peers. That people that work alongside being in other districts and in parts of the world. Yeah you're right about lie. Journalists Noah I didn't even think about it like that but like I got I know who's real and who who's who works hard and you know who's great is really the job of. Who's taken the easy way out? Learn all no genuine. Who's not exactly like all you can hide it but it comes out. Yeah how would you compare then the like assurance or respect from your peers so your teammates and other guys you play against compared to other coaches like. Would the comparison be no? I think I think that that falls under the pier catalogs Coaches are high level professionals. Who evaluate the game? You play against them. You compete against them so they have a great understanding of who you are as a player and what you're capable of so I think that's To be honest that that's equally relevant and sometimes in some cases more more relevant because they've been involved in a game For so long yeah shifting the page a little bit Trying to think of transition but I didn't have one. There's a lot of people out there who people. There's a lot of players out there who are in position to take control of their own brands. You haven't Lamelo ball of the world. We have another player. Who's taking a similar but different path in in deciding not to go to college Jalen Green One of the best players in the country has decided to take the NBA League path. They're going to be creating for him Jordan. You have a lot more details. The maze going to be making a lot more money than he would made by going to college and still has the opportunity to go back to college and attendant and get his degree. What do you think about this decision? So I'm not as surprised because I had been told months back that Jalen Green was considering the pro route. Although I thought would be more. So of like the Brandon Jennings go to Italy or RJ Hampton. Lamelo Ball. Go to Australia New Zealand. That being said it is a little bit. I wonder how much this is. The sign of the of the new times because as of right now. Obviously we don't have a high school to the NBA rule. There will be a new. Cba and that will be a significant. That will be a significant topic of conversation. But I I think that we're going to start seeing more and more of this regardless. Cj Jalen Green for those who don't know number one overall prospect prolific. Just an absolute stud and he if he was in this draft as a seventeen year old He would have been a one of the top picks. He's really that good. So my biggest thing is like big. Is the big picture here of. Is this more of what we're going to see regardless of what happens in terms of the The prep to the NBA rule. Just more we're going to see guys just saying I don't need to go to college. Let me just get paid a year earlier. I absolutely think player's GonNa take this route Especially due to circumstances and in the state of the NCW right now. I think a lot of players feel like instability. Times has taken advantage of them. They're like Mr Name and they have an opportunity to go make money right away while playing on a big stage. I think it's something you have to consider. Especially if you know. You're going to be a one and done type of athlete. If you know you're not going to finish college anyway. I think this is something you have to consider explore and you look at a Lamelo Ball. Who went overseas was paid in still maintained His chances of being a top top ten pick. I think he's still in consideration for potentially being the number one overall pick Think a lot of players are watching and seeing how that's going. Rj WHO's also in position to be a top pick. So I think a lot of players who were good enough Are going to consider hiring agents in and becoming professional a lot sooner than they they probably would an impasse years because of people's hatred for the incidentally at this point I think a lot of people were fed up in sick of it and wants and wants to take advantage of their name and likeness. Right away in Isaiah. Todd's another guy in their top recruit. He was committed in Michigan. Blue Chip player says he's now going pro. So you can start to see how this could domino. But I wonder like so the whole deal is that the G. League was paying guys. One Hundred Twenty Five K. Now they're opening a now they're upping it to five hundred it. What point or what's the number is five hundred number where it's enough It's enticing enough for players of that calibre to say I'M GONNA go. I'm GonNa go that route because they're our downfall supply in the G. League empty jams bad travel. Batta combinations stuff that you wouldn't have to deal with if you're playing at a major program like a Michigan or Memphis or wherever I think if you have a chance to make a half a million dollars While competing at a high level in front of MBA executives. You have to consider it especially if you know you're going to potentially go pro early for some guys. I think college is necessary. I'M UNI time to develop a plan from scouts. You need to go compete at the collegiate level and you may not be ready to to be an adult so to speak when you become a professional athlete and give up your amateur status. You're basically saying you want to become an adult and assume adult responsibilities paying bills Being being more Responsible for your actions as opposed to when you're in college you're excused for some of the things you do because you're still considered a kid but now I think that the money is raised for those levels. I think people are going to be invested in potentially making that that opportunity available to them and see the reason why. This is really good to me when I think about the ramifications of it is to your point about the NCAA this now puts pressure on the NC double A. to improve their status for players so to say to their kids. Okay maybe we can allow you to profit off your likeness whether it's for Jersey or a video game maybe we can give you a larger stipend for food whatever it is to me this move by the NBA by Adam. Silver and the G. League while is now putting pressure quality pressure on the NCW. That never had before I like it. I like it a lot. I think that is going to be at a crossroads here where they're going to lose a lot of high level players due to either going overseas or going to the G. League especially if these if these potential freshmen have a chance to make a half a million dollars. Taking Science shoe deals right away they can begin taking on money on on differ. Endorsement deals and campaigns. I think it's a decision that should be thought about carefully. Obviously but if I knew I was going to go to school for six months and then go to the NBA. I probably would not go to school if I had a chance to make a half million dollars in. I knew there was a proven track record of players who had done something similar to this and gone on to become professional athletes in NBA. I think you have to consider it nine times out of ten unless you just want that college experience. Yeah and that's that's a great point as Ahah Todd Jalen Green and now a few others veil be the original first domino's to fall if they have success especially early on now. Let's say their first two three years and then get a bigger deal if they have success real tangible success. And I believe we'll see more and more of it. Moving forward Regardless of what the does yeah we're definitely going to see more and more of it. Incidentally at some point is going to have to pay players they don't know how they're going to structure and how they're going to go about it but it's I think it's inevitable Part of the NC Double A. And how it will kind of progress so to speak. Yeah five hundred feels like about that number. Half a million dollars feels like the right number. It depends on the player someplace worth more honestly some players worth less so I think it depends on the player what his ceiling is. If you're particularly the first pick in the draft and as you said before this kid is good enough to have gone pro right now and been picked as a top ten player. You look at the contract still a slave for a top ten player in the NBA draft. You're looking at anywhere from one. Point eight probably two million slotted to two million to what three point three million over the course of three years after taxes. You're looking at a fraction of that. So I think depending on the player and how long this season potentially is going to be because think about it. They have to structure a scheduled. Have to figure out the travel accommodations. They're going to play. Are they going to Europe? Are they going to play? Nba teams will the preseason games. There's a lot of things they have to steal factor in. But I feel like they're in a position to kind of experiment and as it goes on as progresses it's only going to get better and and attract more and more players. Yeah and remember when you when you take that step toward the pros and you go to the G. League not only is Jalen green getting five hundred thousand dollars but he's now much closer to a studio. He can talk to shoe companies and get an endorsement contract..

"Kevin Danna right after the break. Hey Audrey Cooper here editor in chief of the San Francisco Chronicle and we've ramped up the news coming at you from fifth emission except not the physical that the mission since we're all working at home the fifth and mission. That is our flagship news. Podcast were interviewing anyone with anything to say about the corona virus so that you have the latest information as soon as we know it so check it out the mission wherever you get your podcast. One thing that's interesting is how this whole thing kind of came together Normally when you have A major announcement like this you would you would just you know. Have a big press release. Maybe have a news conference. I know that would be tough given the current state of things. But you could do it on zoom or what have you You would have something to to to to get out in front of it. But what happened was Jalen green announces that he's going to the G. League. He says that he's going to this. This this player at this Pro Pathway thing and when he said it you know I I've written extensively a big feature on Jalen recently. I've spent time with him. I was even confused by what exactly that. Man. I'm thinking. Is he going to a team? Is there is there? Is this something else like I know. I know that there was the pro pathway but the way he's announced it kind of made it sound like he wasn't going to an actual team that exists. Currently so I was confused and then shortly thereafter yes. Pin Drafts a report with full quotes from three from door. Game and other guys. You know that it already reported this detailing the intricacies of the situation so my understanding and this is just an assumption based off the series of the time on events is that G. League decided we need a guy who's GonNa be the face of this guy who can bring excitement to this in legitimize. This jailing green is the perfect player to be that guy because jalen green is one of the best high school prospects in the past decade. He is he's drawn comparisons to Lebron James to Kobe Bryant. I've watched all his highlights. I've spent time with them. I've seen him shoot. Seen him play he is a guy who I honestly think that help an NBA team. Right now And he is to me a sure thing and a lot of these other guys were talking about the cash sodas in the world. I have no idea if they're how if they're ready for even a G. League Environment Jalen Green will if he was playing just in a normal G. League schedule next season would be probably the best player in the G. League. I think he is a future. All Star that type of Guy So he is the perfect person to be the first and I think what happened was they recruited him. He said they said. Hey you gotta be the start of this new thing the face of this exciting new program. We got going and then you know what since we? We want to be as minimal to you as possible. So we'll let you have your little moment. Let you announce this you know on your instagram live. And and and and get it out there before we even released details this and Oh yeah by the way you know how everyone has been saying. We're only paying one hundred twenty five. Yeah we'RE GONNA three five hundred thousand dollars and you can also because you're going to be a real. You can start sending endorsement deals. It's already coming out that he's getting seven figure. Offers Shoe deals so You know how how is an eighteen year old? Can you turn that down? Yeah I mean what he could be. May I know? But that's seven figure shoe deal at three million dollars Messer. No yes and and that was a good point. You bring up house announcing on why he said. I'm doing the new something like I'm joining the new league team for the only thing right when he? Yeah when you check out I'm like wait has like at first. I was like he he's He's got something wrong about this. There is no nothing announce a new team outside of the team in Mexico City right there I hope the God who Jackson and then of course All all the stuff comes out. And I see the shops ron okay. All right that's what you're talking about and then it's like oh there's going to be inserted in California. The first thing I'm thinking about well they used to have this place. Where the Bakersfield Jam Player? They'RE GONNA play they're like Oh then it's in La. I'm like. What are they gonNA play? Where the Lakers old practice facility is like? I'm trying to think about the personalized and all that stuff. And then of course all that goes with windows. Ten to twelve exhibitions potentially. I'm not sure if all those details are official official yet but Yeah stuff's came about like the yeah. It was interesting to kind of get all this information in about forty five minute span. Where like someone like me? I had no idea that all this was Kinda the word I think they did their best to make this. You know exciting to make this year's Eve They tried to keep this a secret. The best they could but obviously this had to have been in the works for a while. I went to Napa three or so weeks ago. It's been an afternoon with Jalen and his parents and his sister and for a bigger than that bigger profile I talked about earlier and You know whenever right talk to him about his decision. He was very reserved. Not Not giving up a lot of details but talking to the people around him It sounded like what I was hearing was. He's probably not seriously considering going overseas. But you know when I when I say these people We'll Jalen said that he's there's the thing about going pro us. And in retrospect I'm really mad at myself for not connecting the dots there But the reason I didn't is because this was not considered a viable thing for players of jalen caliber until now Under the heaviest model. I don't think the G. League would made sense for someone like Jalen And so but but now it's like okay. Well he's not going overseas going pro so I guess you would. Have you know the obvious thing? And he he he He kinda he kinda tried to throw people off the past yesterday. He had a an instagram video. Where he's a big decision. Come in and you had the Memphis hat auburn sweatshirt and then. Nbl shirt not nothing and someone had actually gone back into his his instagram and found a picture of him in his apartment with Geely cat on the on the table and actually went out and circle the hat instead. Someone's photo shopping stuff into my pictures. And then when he made the announcement today he was wearing that hat Yeah I know I was talking with. David Resnick He's less veteran takes products. Asir Guy Friend of mine. He's like I didn't even know they made she leaked faster those you got a collector's item there but You know it was really interesting to see how that all played out any kind of like what you were saying. I mean the Guy Kinda get your back on this like even I who protested the G. League for eight years I but to say there are. I kinda got professional tactics because no one was on it and Oh okay. I guess this didn't work. Maybe it will work in the future like I literally think about it for for a good. Wow because if it wasn't us and so I think a lot of people could be forgiven for like not really thinking about that seelig often all that seriously L. WanNa take it out there for quite high. Yeah and you know I think that that had to be disappointing for the G. League and for for the NBA. And you know as a top league in in the world. That's not even debatable. And I think there was a little bit of embarrassment. When RJ Hampton Lamelo Ball went to Australia and and you know everyone's streaming their games online. That got a ton of attention. I'm sure out. Silver was privately steaming thinking it makes literally no sense that someone would need to go across the world to do this when we should have every thing in our disposal to create that opportunity for them stateside and you know spent eighteen year olds you know. Generally speaking they. They want to do with what they're comfortable with. And I'm sure the average eighteen year old between going down to La and and getting a nice apartment or House with their family for for a year As opposed to going to Australia or country where they don't speak English. I'm sure they'd much rather go. Yeah exactly and forgiven Greenwood. Was that a two three hour time. Fresno where he's originally from so yeah I mean it's even Even more convenient for for a guy like Jalen Green and from an NBA perspective. And this is one thing that I've been saying for a while. And then you know as you lead players tried to get higher salaries and there has been progress in that with The the salaries to thirty five thousand dollars. And hopefully that's an he needs to know if you're the MTA the bachelor world she wants to have all the best assets under your umbrella and so what. What's the way to do that? Is You know one thing is to raise the pay. Puff that up to five hundred thousand dollars for for the professional pass for this new team for the school guys in and Yeah you want to have the best prospects. Possible the best you know. That's not gonNA be Declared Street wants to help for them under your belt. Many of them as possible is so today was definitely a big step in the right direction. And I'll be honest with you. I'm I'm happy about this because I feel like Hollywood sports college basketball in particular has become such a mockery It's such a Sam. I mean you have especially with these one and done guys you have these these five star guys now a Lotta them as as has been reported now as FBI. Investigation revealed are getting money under the table and from different back channels. And you know what to go to school for a semester. You as you know being in college you can. You can fail. You can literally not go to class and also master and you can still survive that semester in fail out and then just move on and go prepare for the NBA. So the entire entire ideas these one and done has really in a lot of instances become a charade and it gets to a point where it's like if we're if we're just going to if we're gonNA just let's stop pretending that these guys are student athletes and let's call it what it is if you. WanNa go if your goal is to be in the NBA and you've proven and showing that you have the potential to do that can just go pursue in. Do in let's not let's not let's not playing games here you know and so. I I respect someone like Jalen coming out and saying I want to be a pro and I'm I want to do what's best for me and and I'm not gonNA pretend like I I wanna be going to classroom. I mean if I had to do the exact same thing. Yeah Yeah I hear people say oh. You can't put a price on the college experience. Well it's like well you're you're not gonNA make a million dollars is a twenty year old or whatever like you need to go to college. I. It's like college experience. I mean these guys are literally there for a semester. You know they. It's.

"I remember that was literally a fear that was in the the recesses of my mind for that extra year because I'm like damn you already messed up Now you've you've literally basically flunked out. Dropped out as a senior You don't walk you you're you're you're GONNA be eighteen in August and you don't have a high school diploma So that next year for me was like you know I'm I'm on edge. I'm trying to do everything right. I'm in a military school. That's crazy guys getting kicked out left and right and I'm like Shit I cannot. I can't take another bad step and I just felt like even at the time I felt like Dan. Why do I have to go through all of this just to play bat like just to play basketball and have an opportunity to play basketball because ultimately the desire to play pro was always on my mind? That's what was like the the carried out there dangling in the wind and it was I. I remember saying to myself like man. This is doing a hell of a thing like not having a diploma. You're going to Virginia to military school. We've guys who were you know guys on our last leg behavioral problem kids like you know psychos man. I mean just being honest with you and you know it was just one of those things where had I- made and there were guys at on my military. I was the least recruited guy on that team and I ended up with the best outcome. You know not being not being selfish or whatever. I'm just saying I played longest an MBA. There was only one other guy. I wasn't a guy that was going. We had guys GonNa Clemson Florida all types of stuff and at some point even in that in that military environment. They got tripped up. Couldn't survive it and their whole career with different directions so it was very very risky for my part my family's part and the PC L. doesn't present that type of risking my in my in my opinion right. It's like I go ahead and graduate high school even if you gotta point nine or one point whatever it is. Let's find you a trade that you can do. Let's get you in front of media people get you. You know used to answering questions. Let's get you literate and up to par in terms of your reading level. Let's do some very basic fundamental things that will help build you from a different perspective. And like I said if you give guys these opportunity if you present them with the option on top of hey man you can get compensated You can go out and start representing yourself as a brand as a as a professional brand. I think that opportunity is something that guys particularly. Someone who might have been in my position would definitely take a look it. It's interesting to David as you relate your own story and the benefits that could have that you could have had from a league like this because you guys are taking this holistic approach and I think people just Kinda give the benefit of the doubt to the idea that when kids are going off to college environment that the college is looking out for you because this is a place of higher learning these are these these revered institutions. But the fact is especially for the guys that they're recruiting. That are the big time schools that they expect to be one in duns. They don't care about the students at all and they're not looking out for whether they've got the proper media training or personal finance training or life skills. Whatever they're just they're just a machine there to you know. Put YOU OUT ON THE STAGE. Make some money from you. Sure elevate your your own brand and all that too and you'll you'll you'll get something from that but then you're out and you're the grades don't matter we all know that and there's a lot of cheating that goes on around that and you know this. This sounds like for for all kinds of reasons for an probably for a lot of players would be a better opportunity. That said there's going to be out of the obvious things which I'm sure you guys have addressed at points here so I'll throw them out there. The college is obviously a system has kind of a stranglehold or just a captive audience. Right people love March madness people if they went to a lot of these schools. There's just that emotional tie to programs Kentucky Duke North Carolina and so like. There's this built in emotional tie and obviously any league that starts from scratch has to establish that over time but breaking from that I think would be would be tough and then obviously got this massive platform all these the national TV deals. What are you guys doing in terms of you know is is there a TV deal lined up yet or streaming? How are you guys? GonNa Approach that part of it and then how do you just? How do you counter that that aspect? Where the college system has a very strong hold on just the minds of the American Sports Fan. Yeah I mean those are definitely fair and great questions as far as a couple of data points that I think are important starting with viewership. So there's a lot more volatility within watch programs get watched which ones don't and a lot of ties to talent so like Duke last year rated. I think two point two million viewers per game which ended up being slightly higher than the NBA average. It's out because there are more duke fans than there are fans of individual MBA teams. It was by virtue of the fact that Duke had you know a once in a generation talent on their team. And that's even been seen in the differences Some Duke UNC last year. The shoe blowout game prior to the shoe blowing out. There is about just under four point. Five million viewers for that game This year when Duke and UNC played there was about two and a half million viewers for the game. And so I would pose the question of what did all of a sudden two million fans disappear or is there the idea that there's approximately two million people for a game that went to watch elite talent and also another point? Rj Hampton Lamelo ball playing in the in the NBA. Also again. We talked about earlier on the other side of the world. Thirteen hour diff. You know the the the first time that they played against each other the game was streamed on Facebook Live. It was at eight or nine. Am East East Coast Time You know so five. Am Six am west coast time and they had over two point. Two million viewers for the game on facebook. Live so the idea that the eyeballs go where the talent is is something that we truly believe in. Yes dukes going to sell out there. Ninety three hundred seat arena every single game corona virus. You know pushing that's a side You know in normal times they will sell out that that arena every single time but the digital fan which quite frankly is the bulk of the fan base that person that has the ability to put on six different games or TV show or whatever else they might WanNa Watch at that point. You know the the only thing that's stopping them from clicking the button and going to the next channel is if they're entertained. The idea of like Michigan basketball. You know being associated as good basketball that ties back to the fat five prefab five. No one really cared about Michigan basketball. So you know the idea is for us and and this is pretty much what our entire business plan is based around. Is the idea that star players dry fan interest more so than the universities do mean even this past season prior to March Madness Being canceled viewership numbers were down and part of that is going back to well. You had Lamelo and RJ overseas. You Have James. Wiseman he's not playing. You had a couple of other top players that were injured and weren't going to participate in the tournament. And once you start losing Matt Star Talent again fans have other options. People have other options to to watch and to consume whether it's sports or otherwise so for us you know Again going back to your point about the stranglehold of the NCAA. What makes us different from other startups is the from other Star Leagues? I should say is that once upon a time you had three or four channels and that was it. Those were the only ways that people watch games. Today you've Got Stadium Caffeine. You've got the Netflix Amazon Hulu. Vod options you've got all these different platforms that provide fans with the opportunity to watch sports and not all of them have relationships with the NCAA. In fact you know fifty percent of the Marceau maybe more don't So we do not have a deal in place right now but we're fully confident in our ability to whether itself distributing which is again something we're starting to see more and more of or being on a stadium or caffeine or something like that There is a way that if we have the talent the fans will will follow the product in that first time they tune in we just have to give them a reason to stick around weeks with the you know the xfl. Afc of the world sort of have failed to do was because you eventually realize it's a lesser product then the NFL. It's interesting because this season in college basketball season or whatever this past year has given you guys like such an obvious platform to make this case because yeah if you guys already existed were established an RJ Hampton and Lamelo and even been because. Obviously that was that was an NCAA like those guys. If they're playing in your league this past season there are no issues and there's no time zone problem and everything and people are definitely watching because they know those names because we're all talking about them because all the mock drafts have them up there and people love to obsess about you know. There's different kinds of college basketball fans right. There's the people who like all right. I went to Kentucky. I went to Carolina. Whatever I'm GonNa Watch because that's my team. Then there's the people who just you know our our basketball fans or MBA fans and want to see who the next potential stars are they. WanNa see Zion and so like the eyeballs will follow the talents and this is a really interesting year for having very obvious examples. I guess of that if you guys were had been up and running. So how are you like just briefly to get this going by next Memorial Day Corona Virus Notwithstanding? And everything else going on are you. Is there a recruiting process here? Is there like how does this work in terms of like just filling these rosters between now and next May yeah? I'll let David Finish because David's the director of basketball operations in addition to the the COO. So that's you know really his territory in terms of recruiting but will function similar to an athletic department. Just you know. We're controlling eight teams rather than one so identifying talent scouting talent. Obviously there's challenges that everybody is dealing with right now in the recruiting space the difference for US versus the NCAA at this very moment is they have their no contact period. That's been extended now through may thirty first. We're twenty-first-century Remote Company for the most part. Now I'm coming in from Cleveland. David from Raleigh are teams all over the country. So we're already used to to operating remotely largely through online mediums. Like this and so you know. We have no restriction on being able to contact players families. Obviously we're not going to put anybody at risk and do it in person but You know so. We have a window of opportunity right now to continue to educate this next class of athletes that being the high school graduating class of twenty twenty one will be our first full recruiting class and then in addition guys that are from the current class..

"I think it was pretty it was pretty if you enjoy charge spanking off the glass he's holed up for if you're the NC double a. you got to be really pissed off at Rj Hampton Lamelo ball who could be two of the top five guys in the draft Ashir two of the top five or maybe he's trying to come around screen and Brandon Clark was picking them up off the roll I mean this is it's a big moment because it is going to kid looks I can they have another scheduled one too so there's two chances right as I said the caravan will head on to the Oklahoma City but your initial reaction is you really liked the guy yeah I like him a lot he can score it's GonNa be interesting because it's the first time in a long time that We're really going to have to pay attention to a Luca was I don't remember keeping up with Porzingis and with during the year like that was still at a time where you weren't really going out and seeking out Those games you know to evaluate you would you would basically see on Youtube but people are GonNa be trying to seek these games out this year to watch Lamelo and to watch Rj Hampton to your point about them not playing college basketball you know it's different than Hey trae young Oklahoma's playing you know Texas tonight flip on espn two and watch it like were in order to decide who we think should go high in the draft unless we're going to do it on Youtube clips we're going to have to seek out these games find them to see two of the best prospects of the NBA play which is not common. I can't remember Luca was the swath through youtube we're gonNA take a quick break when we come back we are going to discuss five things each that have stood out to us in the preseason so far we'll do that after these words the Google assistant is ready to.

"To check out the jazz and with the jazz everybody's hot pick this year they're sort of off the radar finals team I think we talked about this earlier in the show early a couple of bucks you could you could just eliminate some of the guys from college it makes the hardest Gal and and I and I can speak from experience there because when I started in the Celtics Front office in two thousand skier and five we drafted Joe Greene out of Houston Texas and then that was the last year you could draft high school players the NBA shut it now so here's why it's harder in college you're doing business combined large with the same people every year you have relationships at Duke or Kansas or Kentucky or North Carolina even some of the mid major programs you have strong relationships us with the coaching staff starting with the head coach and the assistant coaches and maybe even some of the support staff the trainers and strength coaches and people like that you have access to a body of Work it is by and large standardized if you're playing a BCS conference usually the level of competition is relatively stable. I think about high school you don't have any of that stuff you might not even have a schedule into no one a prospects playing a lot of times especially if you're a big like Kendrick Perkins Ralph Jefferson you're so physically dominant in high school that it's hard to get a lot out of those evaluations well I think the League needs to be really careful about reopening the gemstone to NBA evaluators the upside is there could get Kobe Bryant you could also get in the EIB in their out obviously a lot of cases in between that as well but the thing that teams want guy just so you know what all thirty team NBA teams want is if high school players are eligible to be drafted again in the future and it looks like that may happen as soon as twenty twenty two NBA teams are saying look we need medical records those prospects because we don't have good stats we don't have good film we don't have a lot of relationships sometimes those programs so at a minimum we're going to need mandatory medical testing for the draft which is currently a sticking point between the teams and the Players Association let me ask you this question because I've I've it's great that we haven't gun a on because he went through the fire as opposed to the rest of the world like it's Rudy's buddies playing fantasy basketball picking they know everything right but from from my perspective of seeing young players without a G. League at the time the D. League was not a big deal now it's a huge it's it is night and day different to what it was two thousand three four five would that factor into it I mean why not open up four rounds of the draft why not drap you know multiple guys and have them common go to your G. League and it's not that much money to support these guys on small salary if they're playing in your G. League and if one guy hits every five years and then you have his rights for the next six years or five years ever it is isn't that worth all that all that time and effort and the money that you put into it doesn't that all payoff one guy hits for you I completely agree with you scalloping on my soapbox for a number of years as an executive and now as a member of the media because think of what it would do for the G. League the top high school players or players finished high school were playing in the G. League and for example when I when I was general manager of the Phoenix Suns were to really talented young players who were finished agents in the Andrea Eytan in Marvin Bagley who from Arizona spent a lot of time here if they played from the northern Arizona Sons Phoenix Suns Minor League affiliate I think of how much more interest inattention that team would get from the fans media sponsors on on so I completely agree with that my suggestion the league would do would be to what major league soccer did I think what they did if you guys remember when they got David Beckham that come over from Europe I think they have one uncapped salary slot where they can pay David Beckham same million dollars a year you're gonNA favorite player in the major league soccer with making fifty thousand dollars a year I think the NBA should do that I think for a long time the NBA has gone out of it's way too how to be a partner with the NC double A. I think the NBA should be a competitor to the NC Double A. and try to get a lot of the top players because look let's be realistic US Brandon Jennings I did not want to go to Italy Emmanuel Moody did not want to go to China I don't think RJ Hampton Lamelo ball wanted to Australia but they did because there are no other chins and they can get paid a little money not a lot of money but a little bit of money to go play there instead of playing in college so if the NBA is willing to think with the pay for play L. Some laws that are being passed in California and other states in college athletics I think it would be the perfect time to say okay look we we've we pandered to the NC double a long enough we've tried to be a good partner now we're going to do our own thing in fact top high school players come plan the G. League for a year it'll help the players develop it'll help the league develop and I think it'd be great for the growth of the NBA a. and especially the growth of minor league basketball so sky appreciate you asking me the question I'll get off my soapbox now I feel like the old man yelling my lawn but that's something I pushed you know when I was in front office for a long time and I think something the league should really take a look at what you've piqued my interest here with all the scouting stuff you mentioned that you were out of international scouting in your past like our international guys the hardest guys to evaluate our high school players be harder than international guys does the Extra Year of college which actually give you anything really when you're scouting players like how how would you rank those three as far as the most difficulty to scout I think high schools the hardest because I think of the level of competition most nights if you're a dominant high school player if you're a top ten high school player usually you're so physically superior anybody you're playing against in highschool so that's the first challenge the second challenge is as far as injuries as far as far as starters statistics come on around high school program they have relationships with that player in and you never know they might have some kind of financial relationship with the player where it benefits them to see that player do well so far to me highschool is the hardest Europe I think would be second on that list depending on the level you know if if a guy's playing it at Euro League level for an established team and playing well against men like look for example you'd probably have it in he's GonNa be a pretty good NBA player and then colleges it's not the easiest but again it's the most standardized Duke and Kansas and Kentucky North Carolina those teams play each other every year they play against other tap competition in their conferences you have relationships with the coaches and people on staff so I think that's the order high school hardest then international and then college again it's not an exact science for any of them but I think if the NBA does reopen as Jim to high school players need to be some structural changes to help protect NBA teams and the players themselves mcdonagh I'm going to tell a story so bear with me the question might not be great but Danny Aines said when he was scouting Janas he went to Greece and I think it was January or early February and he said he will never ever ever do this again he liked Janas he was like six seven and a half you know he played super hardy had a huge passion for the game but he just thought like man I don't know if he's good enough in the NBA he did not take second look at him before the draft and he heard that he has grown he heard stories like oh man guys grown two inches he said he'll never make that mistake again. How did you Scout Jaanus did you end up passing on him and when did you realize that you made a mistake We'll scale give you a spoiler alert here there's one other guy with Danny ainge on that trip that was you you look you're looking at them yeah that was that was in twenty thirteen I remember legit legit story Danny told me that I said it was it was in two thousand thirteen I of the year I was assistant celtics it was a month or two before a few months before I got hired by the Phoenix Suns is GM and any age and I went to Greece and I remember it well this is playing in the second division he wasn't even the top Greek division teams like Olympia Cosa Panathinaikos who have great history and tradition and and play in the Euro League play in the second division so thank junior college basically or division to to use a college basketball analogy and Dan I flew into Athens Greece we drove to a small town called Volos which is a couple of hours north of Athens right on the water and basically guys I felt like we were watching a rec league game now you can see honest you could see the length see the feel at that time he was super skinny he looked like a kid in could not shoot at all Dan I or sitting there so I don't know I don't know and then a few months later I got hired at GM of the sons we passed on them. We drafted Alex Len with the fifth pick and then Danny Patent and the Celtics passed on they drafted Kelly Olympic I think a few picks before you honestly but nobody guys and I get John Hammond the former GM of the box who's now with the Orlando Magic a lot of credit for this easiest thing in the world would be to say I thought this or I thought if you're John Hammond and the bucks nebula chest puffed out nobody thought it would be like this because if you go back and look at the videos even the draft express videos of Janas pre-draft the process and look at Janas now it doesn't look like the same person honest then looked like a skinny little kid now he looks like the incredible Hulk and they'll put a statue of Mutt side the bucks arena at some point so yes that is a true story yes I think Danny and I are pretty similar regrets I was in Phoenix at the time but in two thousand thirteen summer league sitting there watching Janas who had just started to grow point and we're sending that we we we might have made a mistake here but this this guy's pretty good and he's only getting better yeah so did you back the right Danny told me like he janas came out for warm ups and he was like Oh no what did I do he's like who's Zach and he knew it was has but he's like no no who who is that that's not the same kid I looked at in January did you take a second look at you on us I did film and that was a challenge scale because I got hired by the sons in May of two thousand thirteen and you guys think about when you get hired as a GM OF NBA teams? the team that we inherited Phoenix won twenty five games and finished last in the western conference the year before so we want to make a number of changes staff changes starting with the coaching staff and the adding staff.
