I mean, once again, another reminder of the difficult winter that Europe could face here, I suppose. Potentially, yes. Historically, we've always looked at the dollar we've looked at the gold price. Now we're not doing that. We're looking actually at European gas prices. So, you know, that is the indicator to monitor debased on what's happening geopolitically and particularly what's happening in Russia and Ukraine. You know, a few weeks ago, as you mentioned, gas prices were up at close to three €50 per megawatt hour. We then went back down to one 70. And I think the theme that one can look at here is one can say with certainty. The supply of Russian gas through those Nord stream pipelines is not going to happen for the foreseeable future. If we look at other factors driving energy prices and gas prices, I'd just make two observations. First of all, this is very much a gas problem. It's not an oil problem. If we look at the performance in North Sea Brent, we're trading at around $85 per barrel. So oil prices are weak, and also it's a European problem. "So you're not going to sort of wrap up here but you know we're in the middle of august. I'm going to put you guys on the spot. What piece of streaming content or movie in the theater would you recommend right now and it doesn't have to be a journalism movie. It could be anything. Go neck well. I mean my favorite film of the year. So far was one for which i think. People had pinned a lot of hopes on as a sort of a return to a theatrical experience. Bad just flopped. I think relative to expectations. I know lou was a fan of this film as well as in the heights. It has the exuberance of of classic musical. You know louis certainly wore well-versed in this form than i am but i think probably was. The contemporary musical is that they're cut too much. They're cut too much to not feel like a classic musical to people who are somehow afraid of musicals in the heights does not feel that way to me but it still feels contemporary both in its story and in its rhythm and i just think it's a fantastic adaptation of the show itself that i was fortunate enough to see the show to make that comparison. You know i would say kind of second to that something that is currently streaming. I think in the height will be back on. Hbo max at some point soon but judas on the black messiah is currently streaming on hbo. And that's films from earlier this year. That actually contended for the oscars that happened this year because of the calendar shift for the pandemic. so it's already won it's oscars but is technically a from twenty twenty one so you had a lot of time to think lou. Would you thunder a little bit. Back up the support for in the heights. Which i think is a remarkable adept lately and nick mentioned on a fan of movies actually during pandemic downtime. Ish i've been trying to watch every broadway musical adaptation. That i somehow missed and i've seen about three dozen of them over the period. That's a remarkable remarkable adaptation. It's gotten negative. Flack for a very specific reason. I think a good reason the fact that they're sort of a for one of a better word whitewashing of the characters. There are a lot of variety of skin tones. Let's say in that film. It got a lot of pushback. And i think it's possible for a film to have a flaw and still be great and i think that's one of them. I had similar feelings about salt. Which is a remarkable animated film from. Pixar that i think has a core flaw but is a outstanding film notre two of my favorites as well as from last year. If you missed it at the end of last year my rainey's black rodham is terrific. And i'm hoping all of those plays continued to get adapted but i know both of those are feeder turned film. And maybe i'm betraying my theater interest. They're a little bit but a lot of a lot of adaptations don't work. They don't figure out a way to make the translation to screen happen. Then those those to happen to sometimes flaws you know movies succeed. Despite there's flaws as you sort sorta say without flaws i mean if we just dismiss great movies at flaws we wouldn't be watching apocalypse. Now which is a very flawed movie. But which is also very great movie. I've been talking to lou harry and nick rogers about the quills. Hundred ten actually. I didn't even go this. But you've expanded the list. How many hundred and thirty five. We're up around that number now and we have another ten or a dozen. We're going to be adding within the next few months. There are some exciting journalism films..

"The comfortable is still something that people can do and should do. That's a film that i went into watching having no idea that it was going to be a journalism movie. That would end up anywhere near i. I had the dubious Joy of Taking my son. Who's in his thirties to to go. See ace in the hole the big carnival for the first time and he came out of that movie and this kind of looked at me. He said man you know. Journalists are really terrible people that would be on the list of You know here's a great example of what not to do that movie. You just wanna take a shower afterwards. Yeah yeah for sure and there are others like that but they're also many positive ones and you've mentioned a few you know one of the things about movie criticism right now. Movie reviews right now because we have so much easy acts. that's a so much different type of content. Sometimes it's overwhelming for audiences. Where do you see. The role of the reviewer the movie critic at this point in iniquity you think to me it's finding finding someone who you can trust first of all. I think that anyone can do it now. Not everyone can do it in a way. That foments kind of a thought that this person has some. You know some formal background in this and can assess things in a way that feels like an analysis but it also doesn't feel too overly mannered or academics pedophile. Somebody who's conversational but you can trust. I think is is key but to me. I think that there's just there's so much content and between all the streaming services you know unsure lou will attest to this is just. There's no way for any one person to keep up with all of it. But i think to me it's just the role of it is almost sort of helping curate. What is worthwhile from this glut of content whereas you know even twenty five years ago. It was very much you know. What is in theaters right. That's a very big shift from that to where we are now so i think the role is just kind of helping helping people discover what kind of rises above the noise of that decision paralysis..

"The post is obviously a period piece. Spotlight exists in that era but it is not about that process of journalism. Would you put boron subsequent movie film. In that e probably comes the closest in the sense that you know it's obviously contemporary. As of last year. Even the premise there is that his daughter wants to become a broadcast journalist. Good point but there's definitely some of that you know. I mean i think the very running gun. Guerrilla nature of those movies feels maybe of that digital piece more than some more traditional entries. But that's a great question. Michael and i think that you know i think of this is not necessarily something that we put on the list but you have godzilla vs com which came out earlier earlier this year. That has a podcast. Or who is you know. I mean he's a conspiracy theorising podcasters. But there aren't allowed of you know podcast. You're movies yet. Maybe there will be in a in a few years. We'll we'll add to the list and there have been thrillers and horror movies that hinged on social media not necessarily you know newsroom social made right like did. Yeah and that's where we sort of wrestled if if media if it's sort of about media. Does that still make a film for this list. If a film can convince me that there is still journalism involved all elizabeth media on media's journalists. It's interesting because also on your list is the sweet smell of success. Which i always glad to see on lists to remind people to check out that movie and you don't think of it as journalists movie but he was a you know. He was a gossip columnist so and that's very reflective of of that type of journalism in that that period of time right and in that period gossip columnist for at least the big ones that we did a story actually about the maybe a year ago and quilt year and a half ago whereas influential as any news reporter. They were making a break and careers. They were aggressively pushing for scoops. So yes we smell. Success is certainly one in there and one of the more quotable movies in the mix as well for sure one of the best written in shot. Movies manny visuals task. So we've been talking about different types of journalism mov- movies here. What is hollywood saying about journalists. You know we've got superman on our list. So obviously we're heroic people in spotlight. Certainly has has a nice things but by and large what would you say is hollywood's sort of view of the journalist. I think we're all over the map. I mean if you look at this list where heroes and were signed me where we're geniuses were idiots out for ourselves and we're out for everyone to make the world a better place..

That people will discover from this list. Like i said that's a big one for me another one. I'm glad that we were able to get on. The list is a movie called nothing but the truth. That is a very good movie about journalism with with kate beckon sale. Whom if people know kate beckon sale they probably know her from the schlocky action movies that she seems to find herself. You know how many how many zombie reports killing this one. none it also has. David schwimmer in it. It's a very atypical. Cast for what turns out to be very intellectually media the about journalism movie movies from rod. Lurie who actually used to use to do don't criticism. It worked in journalism. And so so movie like that one. We just added that. I had seen but i had not seen it since it initially opened in nineteen. Ninety-two was the public eye with joe. Patchy as a a photo journalist kind of on the fringe of acceptable coverage right. I mean he. He sort specializes in these various cd but evocative portrait of new york circa nineteen thirties. "There. To be honest there was a time. Crunch and i thought you know what can i do that. Would spark up the issue. Maybe generate some interest and we could actually have some fun with it and i could get it done. We were also approaching the hundred and ten th anniversary and was planning to do a big issue that fall that would focus on more of the nuts and bolts journalism that would look at the history of journalism landmark events over the hundred ten years looking at the evolution of the society of professional journalists code of ethics and how that changed over the years. Getting somebody to speculate on the future of journalists and there was a meteor stories. That were planned for summer as well. And i also i come out of. I've worked a lot of magazines. I was an editor on staff at melfi magazine indianapolis monthly and a few other so coming from those regionals. I liked sort of big audacious packages sometimes in publications those attention attention-getting stories that take it to the next level. There's so many top ten lists out there so many. Here's the five best this kind of movie. Here's the ten best this kind of play. And i thought let's we've got that hundred ten number hovering there. Let's go for it. And i thought we could do it because i knew the folks that mid west film journal. That's knicks online publication. I've done some a little bit of writing for them. At the time. I knew they had a team of really talented writers who could sort of come together on this. So that's when. I reached out to nick in the folks at mit with journal to see if if this would be manageable. Nick you wanna take it from there. Sure yeah i mean this was something that you know as lou has mentioned you know he had done some writing for us and and a lot of us have known lou through some journalists association circles and just seeing him at at press screenings and so we had this this kind of existing relationship and when he came to us with this project. I mean. I don't think i don't think there was an ounce of hesitation from any of the kind of the five core team members that contributed i mean we. We all were immediately on board and excited for this. Just because of the scale of it as lou said it's exciting to jump into something that is audacious and bold and attention grabbing and just the span of movies that we would all beginning to watch from things that we knew and loved. Well two things that we had never seen. It was just an exciting combination of old favorites new discoveries and away to really just look at how this profession has been portrayed cinematic in so many different ways and we didn't want just hit the usual suspects right want to. We wanted to put that critical piece out there. We wanted to talk about the good the bad and the obscure which you know most list. Don't bother mentioning the brenda starr movie right or a lot of the things like you know ten days in a mad house Terrible woody allen scoop. Those tend to fall off the radar. But i think it's fun to bring them up. I knew we would have limited space in the publication. Getting one hundred and ten movies in their meant you know a sentence or two maybe about each maybe a little longer with some of the top ones but we have this thing called the internet. I'm not sure if you've heard of it. It seems to be a flood. Apparently really catching on. It's catching on and it. Has i believe in taking advantage of nearly unlimited space..

Its one hundred ten. Th anniversary by publishing list of one hundred ten journalism movies quill editor. Lou harry and writer nick rogers here today to talk about this list lou and nick welcome to. It's all journalism exit pleasure to be here. Thanks for having us so. I'm really excited. You know before we turn the mike stat We're doing this. Because i used to talk with a friend of mine. He was a movie reviewer on a fairly regular basis to talk about movies. And i haven't talked about movies in a while and this is a great list because it fits right in. Our podcast has to do with journalism but before he gets to the list. Let's dig a bit into each of your lives so first of all. What got you interested in journalism. And what got you interested in in movies lou. Why don't we start with you. I grew up at the jersey shore in wildwood new jersey and my earliest job was selling. Newspapers is the cell the philadelphia inquirer philadelphia daily news new york times and i would always read even at the age of whatever age. I was ten eleven twelve. I would read joe baltic. Who was the passionate moviegoer. The critic for the philadelphia daily news. He ended up going out to sacramento after that. But that's the earliest newspapers that i remember. Actually reading were moving reviews. Flash forward a number of years after that and i was at temple university as a radio television film major and a friend of mine became an arts writer at the newspaper and invited me to join in and start reviewing movies so movies were also my entry point into published journalism beyond high school newspaper. My first age me the first film. I reviewed for temple. News was the big chill back in one thousand nine hundred eighty three and i've been arts. Writing has been part of my my work ever since before going further need to ask. Did you like the big chill. I had mixed feelings about it as a nineteen year old. Or whatever i was i was the prime target audience for that fell but you hadn't been phillies. Thought the music that everyone was celebrating and buying the album for was a little too much on point so yeah it was critical. At the time. I also had mixed feelings needed to check that otherwise we would have had the end the podcast correctly. Nick how about you. How did you get interested in journalism. How did you get interested in reading about movies so i come from a family full of writers. At least i'm siblings side. My brothers newspaper editor. My oldest brother's newspaper editor by second oldest brother has had an advertising career for years and my closest brother in age is an advertising. Copywriter was also an english teacher for for a long time so our parents always instilled in us kind of a love of words and a and a love of of writing. You know certainly my oldest brother being involved with journalism bet sort of open that possibility for me and it's something i've been involved with in in one way or another for more than a quarter century. They started off at of doing. Sports stringer work as a as a high school student for paper near my small town in northwest illinois..

"And i think it would be important to know whether the quilt tracy was wrapped up in. Was this recognized by her family. As one that belonged to her or the family or is this something that we can put up there and say look this. This quilt did not come from the victim did not come from. The victim's family are most the best explanation we would have is that it belonged to the killer ball on the tough thing here again is if though point of interception or the point of abduction is her apartment. What was she doing at the time. She was packing up stuff so the killer would have plenty of opportunity. Especially when you're moving. You have your boxes everywhere. Things are open in your packing blankets. That you normally don't use. Did they pull this quilt from our own belongings to they move her body with her father's blazer Though these are things obviously we don't know but very good point if the family goes. We don't know who's quilt. This is never seen it before but then the difficult thing is if you say well. This quill is from her ex husband. One could argue. Well maybe she took that with her when she moved out So that that becomes the difficulty thin or if you go well that quill is from you. Know from his mother's house or something. I still think that becomes difficult to prove because they they did have a relationship they were married they did live together for a time period. Some of his belongings could have become hers. Zico has gumy's you combine us the taste terrible but they're gonna take a couple of those helps me sleep whatever okay. I was trying to help you. You sound giving her ammunition against you. Now i'm trying to give ammunition against our. It just helps me go to sleep. Yeah well see a weekend doing puzzles. Yeah and that's by choice. I could have been out be bothered and stuff like i can pick that one choice to be doing stuff over the weekend and even gummy taking nyquil for phone so to sleep when he'd waffles on a stick every it's like too much now. I like that you're enjoying this newfound youth and stuff but it is weird. It's like seeing your grandpa eat pez. You're like what are you doing with. Because i ate.

This is just one of those movie thing but again i tried to put myself into his shoes. Excuse me put myself in his shoes a bit. Like how would i. How would i. How would i react. If i found out that someone the woman i love my wife died at the hands of this person right. I don't know if my reaction would be just beat the hell out of them. I don't think i'd be in my right state of mind. Either right thinking clearly. She gave me in. The face does nothing him in the face of be. Like if you're picking on the like how it's the same effect like you're accomplishing. No you're not gonna hurt him or kill any shape or form. If he didn't have the gauntlet halts punches didn't really affect him. Like you're you're gonna do absolutely nothing but when you're not sorry not the dominate this. But when you're when you're in a rage states doesn't matter it does there's no rationality you are not in your own head. You're not in your own space so you're in a situation where i just need this thing anger in me. It needs to go someplace and it doesn't matter whether it's a table or a chair thrown or whatever else right like rages a very serious thing and not to get too off the field but you know it's it's a fun pastime. "We were getting into that one. Also you know the founder of or they see feeding america. Claire fun to know she's bought now. It's hard to pronounce. But she her story. I mean we were like literally crying on the podcast. Her stories really phenomenal to it. How she also overcame a lot of adversity. She was one her mom adopted tons of homeless kids and just has a profound story of light not wasting food and how you know how she built her life. And it's it's really beautiful episode to those are amazing and You mentioned the horror stories of not recording. I i know like. I've checked like fifteen times throughout this that we've been recording but i needed to check again when he said that. Just because you can never be. Yeah what is a quirk. You have maybe someone you know family friends. Kalsi out for a little quirky about your personality. But it's who you are probably like my kids like call me out like when i'm doing when i'm on instagram. Making a story instagram. They always make fun of me. They're like you don't really talk like that realize mike. What are you guessing new. So i would say they think like you know my my like persona changes. I really try not do that. But i don't know if it's just like in a you know quote unquote onstage. And i change a little. But i would say that's like a quirk of my personality. A natural thing. It's really funny that your kids have picked up they have more of you with your quote unquote onstage. Stage verse. anyone else. So i think they're the experts and then very very important question. What is your favorite type of fry. French fries sweet potato fries waffle fries. I would say like one of my favorite rising. It's probably a toss up between donald fries. China grew up on and jack-in-the-box curly bison have that seasoning on them. I love a good season fry. Yeah i mean fringe fraser. Like my brighter guys. I love them. Well that's really sweet to hear. I mean i think that that's what's been so. Probably the best part about this brand is how it's impacted people Yeah i don't realize that he would impact so many women have. And i you know i just liked my hair. You know being blown out personally. And i'm a longtime silence. My hair is really like crazy in But what was the surprise to be. All of us really was at like we were really impacting. Women's lives if they women were telling us they don't like board meeting without a blowout or an important event or a date or before they're giving bird or A funeral there's things that like women. It dr are has become sich like part of the fabric of their lives and i did it. Just like your example. You know it's like not only do women physically look really great on the outside that but that translates into feeling really good on the inside and giving them this confidence in his like pep in their step and you know once. We realized that we knew we were onto something that we always say we kind of inadvertently stumbled onto this Unity did not realize how big it was. "Hiring salesperson or any employee during the early stages of your company look for people who have resilience Those skills matter much more than the fancy resume with the bells and whistles and then the second advice they would give is. This is a little bit more directed towards women in our industry. I find when. I often look at my network. That women are afraid of being toupee united to promotional to assertive often fail to take credit for their own ideas. Anything when it comes to personal branding. You can only be your own kits. And so you just read those list of awards. And i will absolutely take credit for those awards because if we are not going to advocate for ourselves who will and we are essentially ceo's of our own personal brand great advice. And congratulations by the way on those awards because they're impressive and deathly. That's good message to to get everyone and you bring up a good point in. It was something that i would. I was hoping to get to. I mean you build your own business. In addition to helping others build their brand along the way. And you've already touched on a little bit alec expanded on in your opinion. What's the number one priority for female entrepreneurs. What should they be focusing on video. I think when it comes to raising capital. I think the stats last year. Was the average deal. Size for female at company was five million and the average deal size for a male at company was twelve million more than double in so there is a clear disparity in access to capital. I think the one of the reasons that there is that disparity is that women especially women of color fall under one of two categories. Either where some sort of a charity quota that people are looking to fill for some like minimal funding pool. That really doesn't really make that much of a difference on your bottom line or two. "And I can remember holding that bird in my hand. Shortly after I had killed it. And thinking I could hide it from God. And I buried it in the yard. Try and do that, but So those tiny birds even though You know, there were vultures that I Buzzard's as we call them back then that I laid out in the pasture trying toe. Attract and hearing while turkeys Gobbling on spring mornings or barred owls on summer evenings, bobwhite quail. Which are probably in this thicket here. I've got more representations of bobwhite quail around me than any other bird. Do you have any? I mean, that book ended things because those barred owls were often the last thing that you hear in the evening and quail might be the first thing that you hear in the morning. So in between that there were all these other birds, many of which I did not know the names of, you know, yellow billed cuckoos. My grandmother called them ring crows. And so I would listen to those birds. And who? That Cal? Cal, Cal, Cal, Cal, Cal, Cal, Cal, Cal, Cal Cal, Go go down. And I would hear that. And initially before I learned what those birds were, what yellow billed cuckoos were where they came from. Before I thought about the science of the bird. I thought about the rain coming because my grandmother told me when Mathis said, When you hear that bird rain is coming. So there was a different kind of ornithology Krista that I grew.
