"I want to talk about Chris herring's favorite team, the New York Knicks, they are surging right now. Winners of 9 in a row, they are sitting in the number 5 seed at the moment in the Eastern Conference. They just won a thriller in Boston a couple of days ago, being the Celtics in double overtime. Manual quickly, a tour de force in that game, just a ridiculous performance by Emmanuel quickly. The Knicks are in, I believe, as we speak, the top 5 or 6 in offensive rating, they are top 15 in defensive rating. They're playing with confidence, they have all stars and Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle, Julius Randle rather Dylan Brunson on that level. I guess the question I'm going to ask you herring is that two years ago we kind of saw this, right? We saw a great Knicks regular season team. Is this team different? Does this team have playoff success potential or at least more playoff success potential than the team we saw a couple of years ago? Yes, just to put it bluntly, yes. I think two things. One, yes, they are not an elite team defensively on paper. They are a lot more formidable when Mitchell Robinson is there. And he missed a lot of time and they were playing 500 ball. During the time he was out, which for them is not bad, but they are an elite team, defensively, especially now with Josh Hart. They've got so many wings they can throw out there. That are disruptive. They've got everybody kind of playing on a string, playing hard. Hot heart was a sneaky good pickup. Josh Hart. Thank you. He was. And to Chris point, I don't give a damn the Knicks win, lose, what have you, but I do pay more attention to them just by having covered them before. I follow so many Knicks fans who were kind of like angry that the Knicks were giving up on reddish, angry that they're giving up first to get Josh Hart, and I was like, have you watched him play? Like the team struggled particularly with Mitchell Robinson was out with rebounding. Josh Hart is great at rebounding. He's great and transition. He was one of the best single transition players in the league just coast to coast. He's a guy that hustles like he's Tom thibodeau's fever dream. Like he's perfect for them. And that's even if he's not shooting well, he has a role on that team. Not to mention that I think advertently inadvertently he's someone that went RJ Barrett is shooting you out of a game that you can plug in. And it puts pressure on RJ Barrett that he doesn't just have carte blanche to shoot poorly to not play with effort. It is a great pickup for them. And so I think the addition of him and their rotation, Quentin Grimes has obviously been there. It also puts pressure on him from time to time when he's not playing well. You know, you don't have to use Barrett, who was shot poorly at times, but has been okay lately. And, you know, to the other part of Chris's question, do they have more of a ceiling than last time, yeah, they have a point guard now. They don't have to rely on Derek rose playing 35 minutes in a playoff game off the bench or having to start him all of a sudden when he's come off the bench all season because you have Alfred Peyton as your point guard.

And people are really doing this because they don't quite trust plan a right now. And Cohen says it's fine to go job hunting behind your boss's back on your own time. "Star team just having somebody to settle things down, get people in the right spots, control the offense, make it easier on everybody so that to our earlier conversation. A guy like Barrett's not having to overdo it, right? It should hopefully get easier shots because of Brunson being there and them having some semblance of an offensive fulcrum. I have to say, not to make everything about transactions and contracts, but I feel a little different about the moves to get Jalen Brunson. I was sort of pricing in well and then RJ Barrett get a mattress extension and blah blah blah. And he actually got a very reasonable from a team perspective extension. And so from a future ability to continue to add talent. It's not that the Brunson contract is not as much of a salary cap brick as it might have been if they had already had all the max money going out for RJ Barrett and then whenever they end up doing with quickly and if they keep topping and then Quentin Grimes is going to insult all these things. So I think that makes me revise sort of how I felt about that signing a little bit. Yeah. All right, I had one other one, but I want to flip this around and let you go 'cause I did ask you in advance. Give me a few things that have kind of percolating. So give me two or three things depending on timing here and when you need to jump. Give me something worth noting based on the first couple nights that again, small sample size, but given what we saw in the preseason, given what we already knew about a team or a player, some things that are worth noting now through small sample size theater that may or may not mean a thing when we get to April. So there's three players that kind of run together and one of them I expected it to be a problem. One I expected it to work it out and one I wasn't sure. And it kind of didn't quite work out that way. I'm talking about, you know, the three problem was ball dominant players in the NBA. Which are Luka Dončić, James Harden, Trae Young. Now, I kind of expected to their detriment because of losing Brunson and not really adding any more on ball creation or ball handling that that was going to steer even further into Luca does everything offensively.

"Even RJ Barrett, a guy that I'm exceptionally high on and that I think the Knicks would be or that I think the jazz would be crazy, not the demand in a Donovan Mitchell deal, despite the fact that it kind of seems like they're not demanding it. Does that sound right to you? Yeah, I think so. My feeling on RJ is less say like reporting with sources, the jazz are not pushing to get RJ Barrett and more just kind of connecting dots. So shams and Tony Jones reported last week that Utah once guys on team controllable, rookie scale contracts. And RJ is technically on a rookie scale deal right now. But he's on the last season of his rookie scale deal. And that means that he's eligible for an extension before this season starts. And if he doesn't sign his extension, he'll be a restricted free agent in 2023. Just next summer. And they're going to have to pay or whoever he plays for. The Knicks, the jazz, whomever, they're going to have to pay him, whereas like a Quentin Grimes, just finishes rookie year. You got three more years of him on a rookie scale deal. I don't know if Utah is necessarily in a place where they want to decide if they're going to give somebody a max contract or not. I think they might prefer to push off a decision like that and other year or two. So for me, if you're moving Donovan Mitchell and you're entering a rebuilding phase where you have all of these draft picks forthcoming from this deal and from the re to go bear deal. You're going to be fine in terms of money long term. It's like your books are going to be clean. I would just take the most talented player. At the end of it. Yeah, that's RJ. I mean, look, the thing that you have to consider here, Sam though, is also like, it's not do you want to take RJ in the deal? Or do you not want to take RJ in the deal? It's what are the Knicks removing from their offer if you put RJ in the deal. And if Utah is saying something along the lines of like, yeah, we want RJ and the deal too. And then Nick say, great. Well, if you're, we'll give you RJ, but then you're not getting 2025, 2027 and 2029. You'll give you one unprotected pick. Utah might just be like, no, we want the draft picks. We're not going to be good for two years or three years or four years or whatever it is. These draft picks are really important to us, especially like a 2027 unprotected, like who the heck knows what's going to happen in 5 years, you know? We thought Brooklyn was going to be a dynasty in the greatest team of all time. And 8 months later, it's a totally different story. So like 5 years from now, who the heck knows? So there's that element of it too. Yeah, no, I think that that's also a really important point in regard to where Utah is within their rebuild. Like they shouldn't waste years of RJ's extension. If it would be four years

"Is the Bloomberg business of sports show where we explore the big money issues in the world of sports I'm scarlet fu I'm Damian sasser And I'm Mike lynch And of course a lot of big money issues when we talk about college football let's continue our conversation with American athletic conference commissioner Mike or eco Mike we had started to talk about conference realignment Obviously a huge topic among the NCAA ever since the original big east collapsed Now we know that losing Houston UCF and Cincinnati a big hit for the AAC What have you done to stabilize the AAC And more importantly what's the plan for the future We recognize the fact that conference realignment has been effect of life for decades literally decades going back 30 40 years And even prior to that you've had movement These are voluntary organizations If you pay your exit fee and you stay a particular amount of time you can leave And teams tend to leave for what they perceive as greener pastures Texas and Oklahoma are leaving for the SEC That created a domino effect That's typically what happens Usually conference realignment plays when these spasms occur when these earthquakes occur Things play out there aftershocks and they play out over a period of maybe a year even two That's what happened back in 2010 all the way through 2012 which definitely affected the big east I was commissioner at the time So I'm through this before This isn't my first realignment rodeo unfortunately and I've been on both sides of it and neither either side of it is pleasant But you'll make a long story short here We basically have reconstituted and we can talk about that if you'd like But we reconstituted with 6 we think really good teams that have tremendous potential And some have already realized some of that teams like UAB UTS in the top 25 right now We've got teams that are in big markets that fit our philosophy So we think that although we're losing three very good schools the incumbent schools in our conference have been very competitive with those schools that are leaving Now these aren't dynasties that are leaving We've had tremendous success against those schools and they've been great for us too We feel that ultimately we help them by being a conference that has a great TV deal and great TV exposure We help them build their brands but they helped us to develop into a great conference And I have no animosity toward them and leaving You can not take this personally It's not a personal thing Well Mike you know I mean my question for you is this I mean with the 6 new teams that are coming in obviously you know it changes the talent pool that the American is going to basically be leaning on right And so for my question you've been able to despite all of the turnover in the AAC since it's really been formed players like Antonio Gibson Quentin Grimes you know I mean you've still been able to generate elite performers at the next level And so my question for you is how does that the talent pool that you're accessing change and how do you see that kind of evolving over the future Well it's really going to be a factor of whether the change coming in can elevate their game by virtue of the tremendous exposure we received from ESPN We have a great TV deal that helped build our brand to get ABC appearances Memphis when they went to the cotton bowl appeared four times on ABC during that season back in 19 UCF built its brand with all those great national appearances four times game day has come to our campuses Think about that four times If you had told me in 2013 when we were reconstituting that 5 years later or so Memphis and SMU would play on national TV on ABC at night and game day would be in Memphis You would have said what is this guy doing here The point is it did happen And I think it will happen again We have brought in some really good teams Now we have had a lead performance performers all along the way I don't think that will necessarily change One issue though is the transfer portal and the elimination of the here in residency for transfers That's going to have an impact on everyone I don't know how many players will lose as a result I don't know how many players will gain as a result SMU has built its team through better recruiting but also through transfers because being in Dallas they get a lot of players who played in the area and then want to come home at some point whether as grad transfers or as regular transfers We typically concentrate on teams in big markets where there's also a real passion for football which drives us but we also want to be good in basketball We really do And I think we will be that's another factor But I think we'll get we'll still get great talent coming to our schools and I'm pleased that the teams that are coming in I've made real investments in their series If you don't make an investment you're not going to get there And we think that that's a hallmark of what this conference has been about All right up next on the show we're going to continue this conversation with American athletic conference commissioner Mike rusko We're going to discuss name image and likeness better known as NL That is straight ahead on Bloomberg business of sports I'm scarlet fu I'm on Twitter at scarlet phu And I'm Damian snap sour and I'm on Twitter at D sass hour And I'm Mike lynch you can follow me at lynch EW "That's kind of the identity here which is you know New York Knicks basketball right? Yeah I think they got harder to play against offensively because they're actually going to be able to be creative and space the floor and shoot now. Going out and getting avan fournier going out and getting. Resigning Derrick Rose and going out and resigning Alec Burks. These guys make that harder to play against. And hopefully they even Kemba like Kemba hasn't looked like Kemba in a while but he's still a very solid high volume three point shooter and at the price they got him. If that's even like 70% of Kemba that's that's awesome. Yeah totally. So they got harder to play against offensively which is the thing that they desperately needed. And they still have a lot of the same pieces that made them very difficult to play against defensively. Like RJ Barrett was a really good defender last year. I know this was you know the the analytics say he was not a great defender. He was really good. Last year on the defensive end I thought. You know obviously getting 48 minutes of really high level rim protection from Nolan's Noel and Mitch Robinson for a large portion of the season. That was huge for the Knicks. They were really good. Julius Randle is big for a four man and can move his feet and can do some different stuff. Taj Gibson was really effective defensively. Like they have guys that are good defensively they did lose Reggie Bullock and if it was me I would have kept Reggie Bullock over Alec Burks at the price tags that they each signed for. But you know what? Yeah that's kind of parsing a little bit I think. And you know on top of that they go out and they get Quentin Grimes and miles McBride and Jericho Sims all three of whom I think are genuine plus defenders and project as genuine plus defenders in the NBA. So yeah I like this off season from the Knicks. I think they did about as well as you would think. Yeah you had Sims like at the near the top of your pick and roll defense bigs right? I did the subject category rankings yeah. Yeah potential G league blocks leader Westchester Nick's defense is going to be unbelievable with if McBride and Sims spend time down there. Yeah they are. And you would think that they're going to given the fact that New Orleans Noel and Michelle are they getting money? And miles McBride and yeah they're just not getting minutes. "Okay we're back. Let's talk about the New York Knicks. They got Julius Randle decide his four year $117 million extension. They signed Ivan fournier and a lot of these deals by the way we're going to give the full full deals here because I think that they look a lot better now that the full details have come out. If on fournier four years 78 million last year team option neurons Noel three years 27.8 million last year team option not three 32 like was initially reported. Kemba Walker two years 18 million Alec Burks three years 30 million last year team option. Derrick Rose three years 43 million last year team option. They exercised their team option on Mitch Robinson which was interesting because they could have made him a restricted free agent this year or they could have rolled it had him cheap this year and he now will be an unrestricted free agent next year. Very strange not a strange choice but what kind of talk about that in the context of the neurons Noel decision which I thought was interesting. They signed Taj Gibson to a two year $10 million deal where the last year was also a team option. Finally they drafted Quentin Grimes miles McBride rokas yakub itis in Jericho Sims rokas is going to be a stash with Barcelona next year. Miles McBride has signed a three year deal for $4.2 million I believe that the first two years of that deal are guaranteed. In Jericho signed a two year two way contract. That is that's so it's like malpractice level bad. For me I can't remember if it was was it you that when you came on the draft pod with me we talked about I ranted on one of our podcasts about this recently at the athletic and the two year two way is not a good deal and I don't really understand how like even a one year two way has such awful RFA rules where the qualifying offers just another two way with 50 grand on it and there's not a lot of freedom there for players. So the sign a two year two way is you know I guess it's a I don't know it's like a backward bet on yourself where it's like oh I'm betting that I'd get converted but it's also you're giving yourself a two year window..

I think my favorite out of all of these right now is under on Jason Preston under 41.5 gone and I don't know that I would say that this but I just think there are enough teams that really like him. He's a polarizing guy, some teams just don't believe in it cuz they don't believe in the athleticism, like handle all shooting combination but some teams just really loved the feel and think it's going to work..

"And that's that's the hardest thing about working out because you have you have workout player. I means they went to. Do you know gino eight. They look grief in workouts. But when there's real actual people in fun of them doesn't work so well then you have players who their speed just doesn't i catch him like he looks a little lazy doesn't really look like he's knowing hard. Then you just have is who are just dangerous like something about the lights in people in like. That's that's that's where their talent so you know it's it's your job to really understand your a game to know how to put you so you're so your ability stands out if you're playing one one two one two and you're going through this methodical movements. He's lazy he doesn't want it my speed. That's just. I mean. I'm here and be the run around here but i don't think that's gonna make me look good. You know because they don't know what they're looking for the most part they don't know what they're looking at. You know what i mean. They don't they don't really know what they're looking. That's why don't like the way combines. Are you know because at the end of the day. how many. How many guards did you action against this year. Did you get any one. Doesn't want the one. How many how. Many lot of regard are gonna be four. I'm trying to think he played in both night. I'll play last year New planes last year Navy on of baylor. Daily deep. One replay sharieff cooper right now. He didn't play. Oh that's right. Yeah going so like when you go into these drafts. It's like the the people not supposed to be top thirteen. How many other players. They played at caliber. That i'm ranking on like i'm ringing you top to top three peak but you didn't play against no one that was actually challenging you. So it's like. I wanna see the cream of the crop. Actually go against the criminal crop like so i can really evaluate your actual talent. You know what. I mean because you know you you you sit here working out by yourself and all that how do i know what he looks like when competition fixing what is going to look like when he gets fouled two times like. I mean you know you're to you know he's now we're going five. He's down four now. He has to do line drills and did he goes on five will run. I will never see that in the work myself myself. Like is one of those things where it's like you just gotta is just one of those things just got to get mean as we said cream of the crop right and it doesn't matter yes. It's just like this is like football and they run yard dash. Oh my god he then drop three rounds because he did a four to. Can you catch them all. Got any catch all.

last year three rounds five two times this year both night sharieff cooper One four top thirteen eight two one of those one three of gino

"Trying to figure out like when we went into camp. You know instead of going. And john wall a out born. I'm coming for you and that's how we started. We started three. We started three small lords. I'm trying to think of an example of guy. He's doing that now. Which one had to dame is a guy that said look just put me anywhere as guard. J. c. j. c. j. c. j. Of course you have the whole team also under you know what i mean is all six five and under him. Miami's team But you know it's always about adjusting anyway. That's the most. That's the most important being just adjusting being able to just don't be stuck in a position because it's not a real worry position lists dumfries. That's the currently own combo early steph. Curry is not planning five okay. He's not playing five. So obviously it's not position lists and it's just big man that can place monitors but you wanna be able to be one of those players that like they keep. You wanna corner matter. What it is you know is like i can't tell you i can't go small small. We go big ball. You know we just gonna find a way to keep you on on court where you're playing thirty five forty minutes forty eight. I mean being in shape. Just understand that you know the role so well that they can put you anywhere and you can. You can drive. Call that. Mia hooper hooper. Stay on the floor. I don't know what you call it. I just said hooper use that term a lot to.

john wall Curry three Mia hooper six thirty five forty minutes five forty eight Miami three small lords j. c. j. dame J. c. j. c. one of those players one hooper

"Was like like. I'm just like i'm trying to put me to work out with him. You know what. I mean is booming. Just need one again with as showed him on one on one skills. He was more of a gamer. He was more five on five. You know he can take advantage. You can use that liberalism. So that was the first time where i had. I had to process. Is not about specialties. So i have to be able to do everything. So that's why. I said it was like one of those things where i had to craff game. Like even even if you look at the drab. I was the best one on one player in but they didn't let me go one on one against most people most gars dodging me. So i'm i'm sitting there working with richard jefferson. Sean lampley joe johnson. No point bars. I didn't i. I never seen tony parker and a workout jamaal tinsley into workout kidding. While lopate i never seen any of those guys and work. They just dodge and shit outta me. Well talking about chasing workouts. I've been doing that. Is that your mindset right. Now you want to smoke by gimme. Anybody rheinland got to his best win. Like i'm not as no san pablo or on the jabil. So i got but you know that you're cool with that put on the floor and going back to what you say like pushing each other every day. John wayne for the opportunity. Because you know you've been we're gonna awesome. We've been pushing each other for the past month. Just kind of waiting to people say you bet. Even i got will with him again. Then see were to foil and we're you said q. More in that space of gil. I think there's a lot of similarities in that sense of the combo guard. Definition to where you can score you. Can you know you can run. Offense make decisions not combo or so early two thousand. I'm bringing it back a bit now. Just guard you want. you want to be a guard. I can do everything like you. Don't wanna be limited to. I run the team. Well or not i do. I can do everything i can do. You can throw.

"Kids stopped. Like i don't know why they put so much emphasis on what your background is at that age is its own meaningless to me like it. Just doesn't make any sense like it's okay so the emphasis should be on. What does you want to play busy. Wants to get better. Does he want to be the best. Like if i give this kid. Three million dollars. Five million dollars dollars is he gonna wanna get to that twenty million dollars. You're going to want to get to the fifty million dollars or does is three million dollars just enough for him like you know. That's that's my question like that would be my question from june manage. Eight seven million dollars in four years. What should i be giving you. Should i mean you. Should you be a max player. it'll be like. I need to know like what is like what are you. What are you going to turn into like. It's an investment right right right. I wanna know like okay. I'm invested in the seven million dollars into you or are you trying to triple this. Triple this let's go but if this is cooler know take care of a family by my family housing about this. And i mean he's going to get this money give up on me versus. He's oh he won't he won't he won't he won't that maximum okay cool. I can work with that player. Because i know i don't have to worry about it. I know he's going to be in that. Jim preparing getting better trying to trying to get to this level. He has not yet. I think everybody wants to be to some people. Want to be the best but any usually at how they work in annually trying to be the best. Can i wanna be with in lifestyle again in life thousand harder and get him out. La glowing. I in la because how many going on everything we gotta move is we. We were in the morning. Go straight to the second workout. Didn't get the third workout. So we kind of just real focused could like you say which they get. Everybody gives it a drafted kind of assess salary. I said already so trying to work that the second contracts being physical helps keep your mind on a on a straight path and stay folks oughta you guys are in that grimaud now we know as guild that just when you get drafted in you make it. You're just getting started and rookie deal. It's nice but that's just the entry point you want the big deal the longer. Nobody ever wants to talk about it. How i said. But that's that's the reality of it. You know what i mean like you made it to the nba. Now what is that now. What you're here you re part of the roster. You should jerseys team picture now. What the mean is like you know. That's why i say so. If i'm a general manager and owner like like i i i want players. That wants that one meter write checks. I want to write checks. So let me use if i'm if i'm writing. These big checks means you're doing big things. That's just that's just how it is like i i want. I want to write you. Two hundred million dollar.

And he don't like to do. don't lie. We do like to do so if lake nona today accent laser player but i started off in college enough definitely to have in the league. Next love become started off a little bit in college. Low bit wisconsin force. And all that but then you also see how they react. You don't forget that so when you're in that that that gladiator fit and he's in new during the test your opponent. That's that's the other way to go at it. You study them but they got to study you to see what they know about you key working on your game like you said last night at the gym. So there'd be someone again like when training like you know like most of the trainers now right. No knock on them but because they've never actually made it to the next level most of them. They don't really know how to train train like they don't know how to like really like mimic what you actually go through. So you know it's like a summer comes and you guys are just training okay.
