Oluwatosin Olaseinde Africas Financial Literacy Queen Says Be Careful Who You Trust

"Fellow risk-takers. This is your worst podcast host Andrew Stanton. I'm here with featured guests tosin on the say in day tosin. Are you Menu Rock. Yes, I am ready to rock. Let's go. I know you are and I know because I see you rocking it every day on Instagram video. So I've been trying to get you on the show and I'm so happy to have you and let me introduce you to the audience tosin is a professional accountant with over ten years of experience spanning across accounting audit financial management and Taxation. She is the founder and CEO of money Africa and edtech platform that enhances financial literacy and Investments leveraging on technology person is a Washington Mandela fellow. She was a finalist at the future Awards in 2019. She was selected as one of the top 100 women by the leading. Ladies Africa. Spoken at tedx and It's featured on BBC UK Al jazeera's Guardian as well as others. And of course you can hear her and see her every day on many Africa on a gram but doesn't take a minute and fill any further tidbits about your life. So Monday Africa started as a passion project you just wanted to teach people about money that you got my first degree at age of twenty. And even that was an accountant. I struggled with my money. I was living from hand-to-mouth. So I wanted to change that for other people to didn't have to make the same mistakes. I did so after letting about right and district and speaks and wanted to speak to a Nigerian Market using the same language using the same examples things that you can relate to and that's what we did. So we have over 4,000 subscribers in our platform and we've reached over a hundred thousand people online and offline. I'm really excited about it. That is exciting. I'm curious when you started it. You probably had some Vision wage. But in reality things went a different direction, but we're successful. I'm curious. What did you think you were going to be doing with it versus what you are doing or or was it straight on target to be very honest. It wasn't really just the hobby. So I just opened an Instagram page and I just wanted to share my lessons with people right? I just turned Thirty and I was like gosh, you know, I made so much so many mistakes and when I was younger, I just wanted to teach people and I just said I'd posted and like wildfire 1000 followers then we so 5,000 followers. Then we saw $10,000 then then Instagram had only one that needs to be viewers. You couldn't do more than that, right? So they were like, oh totally what more we want more and then we said we go let's go and let's have horses were being as you know, let's have physical classes. So in all honesty, I did not see any growth this way. It really just happened the markets responded positively and they were responding to them as well and just collect get creating products for them. You know, I I can totally picture that wage. Cuz I mean here I am in little old Bangkok and I really know nothing about Nigeria and certainly about the Nigeria Market. Although I'm learning a lot these days as I was talking about with you before but but I can say is that when I saw you on the video it just you know, it makes you just want to stand up and cheer because you know, you bring so much energy so much passion to what you're doing and you know, sometimes you know, you're just talking about Bank earnings, but you know, you still bring that energy and passion to it. And so I always try to make a comment like whoa. Yes awesome. So I imagine that it's growing because I think you do have a lot of passion and I think you share that with the audience. So that's also one of the reasons why I wanted to get you on the show to share some of that passion with my audience. ATT I'm very excited to be here. Yeah. Well, so let's get started. Well now it's time to show your worst investment ever and since no one ever goes into their worst investment thinking it will be home. Tell us a bit about the circumstances leading up to it and then tell us your story a fantastic. So this was in 2017 and at this time of the year off, right the Bitcoin was gaining so much momentum at the beginning of the year was like $2,000 and it was $3,000 and it kept growing now remember I'm straight account and I only I know about basic things and I know the stock market and all this other thing but click on just sounded very futuristic. It's not a very abstract. I just don't understand it now. He's a friend and he always tells me about his really oh I made so much money this I did that I did that. I wanted a piece of the pie right? So what I was accustomed to I a mutual funds or stocks, I think know I got a job. I do understand it. So I was living on my friends knowledge, right it kept telling me about all his wings and then in the midst of it all it went from two thousand to five thousand. I remember when it hits $10,000 and I can't wait anymore. I need to get it. So I reached out to him and I said listen, I want into some of those pie and was like definitely that's not a problem we can get you in now at this point, but Bitcoin now was about $18,000 way about so I handed over a large sum of money Andrew huge sum of money to this person to help me investigate cause I thoughts because I was so futuristics. I can understand it. I wouldn't know how to navigate it and I needed to actually speak to this person that actually knows how to go about it. And

New York's JFK Cargo Heists Hauled In $6M Worth Of Goods

"Accused of stealing millions of dollars of high end goods. WCBS reporter Marla Diamond is on the story. She joins us now. Marla, the Queens district attorney, made reference to an infamous cargo heist at JFK during her announcement. She said. This theft was even bigger. Who's accused and what were they able to pull off What Melinda Katz said that this hall was larger than the infamous Luton's a heist. Portrayed in the movie Goodfellas in 19 seventies, a former Delta employees and to airport truckers are among the six people arrested in this ring. The Cats says they use their inside knowledge of the airport and then forge documents containing accurate details of arriving cargo to haul away $6 million in luxury goods. Well, what were the thieves? After anything, they could get their hands on with the designer label, Gucci, Prada, Chanel handbags, shoes, clothing accessories sunglasses, which they stored at an empty hair salon near the airport. Eventually, authorities were able to get into That hair salon and they found just boxes and boxes of luxury merchandise worth about 2.5 million. That's what they were able to recover. Is anything being done to prevent these crimes from happening in the future? Well, it's it's hard to imagine that much merchandise making it out of JFK with nobody knowing, but apparently it does happen from time to time. Cat said that one, you know thing that people who are at the airport should rely on is safety. And for that reason, she said, that they are increasing surveillance at these hangars. The FBI was also involved in this because of the international scope of the case. They have NYPD monitoring these cargo holds in the hopes that it doesn't happen again. And you know what I love? They didn't do the whole stage the fake, you know, applause. I think it's still seem like an orchard. They just like they put on a great show. And so instead of the stage they had, you know, like a couch, and they had people just chill in talking about the the category, And then they would give away an award and then in between there and mix it with these dope performances. I mean, they had little Wayne and two chains close out the show. They had a really great performance between big shot and she may just seeing them together was so Q on DH then, of course, the ciphers that everybody talks about who had the best this in that. For Trump, Conservative Catholics Are The New Evangelicals

"The Republican nomination in 2016, he gave special thanks to one faith group Evangelical Christians this year. President Trump has a different favorite. I grew up next to a Catholic church in Queens, New York, and I saw how much incredible work the Catholic Church did for our community. These are amazing people. NPR religion reporter Tom Delton has been looking into what has changed. Trump's new interest in Catholic voters is probably the result of realizing what actually got him elected. It was not the evangelicals, says Mark Rozell of George Mason University. People were quite amazed at the overall impact that the white evangelicals had in the election, but I think what was missed was the critical role of Catholic voters that we barely appealed to them. Trump managed to win the Catholic vote last time. Former Republican congressman Tim Hughes camp is a political advisor to a new group Catholics for Trump. There was less recognition four years ago. I think many were surprised about what happened in Michigan and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. It was the Catholic vote that won those states for Donald Trump Lesson learned. This year, The Trump campaign is focusing less on the evangelical vote and more on Catholics. This administration has made a concerted effort to reach out to Catholics in a way that we haven't seen in the past. Brian Birches, president of Catholic vote dot or GE, a conservative group, wholeheartedly supporting Trump's reelection. The group's been around for 15 years, but this year is special, Birch says. We've grown every year, but this year we we grew exponentially Catholic vote dot or didn't even endorse anyone in the last presidential election this year. Even with a Catholic candidate on the other side, the group is running ads that leave no doubt where they stand. Joe Biden would force American Catholics

Names erased: How Indigenous people are reclaiming what was lost

"You don't have to look very far to find Examples York region Ontario was named after your can the UK Regina is named after Queen Victoria Regina being the Latin for Queen and well British Columbia obviously. For Christina. Gray reclaiming those place names is vital and it's personal. The Simpson and Denny lawyer is one of two researchers behind reclaiming indigenous place names. The policy report was released in October of two thousand nineteen by the Yellow had institute at Ryerson University in Toronto. I've reached her at her home in Prince Rupert BBC. Welcome to unreserved thanks for having me. So you are a CO researcher with Daniel Ruck and you looked into naming practices and the erasure of indigenous place names. What did you find? We really wanted to do a cross section of the history of settler colonial renaming practices from indigenous place names to places that are an English or in French, or there's also note anglicised version as well and none look at what is the practice of reclaiming indigenous place names that is happening in various places are ranging from like the Northwest Territories, Quebec B. C. Saskatchewan Manitoba to give. People a different idea of what's going on across these places and territories, and so how do original place names get changed? You know from from the original indigenous words into you know the things that they become how does that happen? Basically what's happening as a result of mostly white people or settlers who were? Changing the names to suit their whims, our desires or values when places were being changed from indigenous place names, saedtler place names like we have to remember the population of Canada at that time was a lot lower than it is now yes. There were indigenous peoples on these lands and territories, but there is also a different perspective by settlers at that time as well, and so they I think they wanted the the places to reflect. What was going on in their life for different ideas that were important to them. I can think that Greek in Vancouver I was looking into the two sisters, which is now called the lions and a lot of people go heikal lions in in Vancouver, and they kind of overlook how sound and you can see them pretty much any point in Vancouver. But before they were called the lions, they recalled the two sisters and it relates to an oral history. Of The squamish nation and it's an oral history that also relates to northerners like myself because the oral history it's it's about making peace offerings between the northern and the southern people's. used to war with each other and so that has much significance to me as a simpson person who used to live in Vancouver the two sisters in Vancouver is definitely one that I've heard about Are there any other striking examples of renamed places that you found y'all like almost makes me want to cry actually there's a place that was called Lake Squat Kit. It's like near Kenmore, but the word squad specifically, Drago Tori term to refer to indigenous women and. Terrible. Stereotypes associated with it as well, and those are based off of how some settlers song about indigenous. and so you can just think about like it's a Grayson, deeply misogynistic but. People like had such a personal connection to the place name of squash it and like didn't want it to be renamed and. But like that I think has such a affect the way that you call places. And think about there are so many missing murdered indigenous woman in Canada and how you referred to that something that. So awfully in calling squad like those have affects real-life affects on people it's not just about placing. And is renaming more. Can it be more than just a symbolic gesture you know on how is renaming more than just a symbolic gesture i? Guess I think we always hope that naming practices or the revitalization of indigenous place names will go beyond just symbolic gestures who also have substantial effects as well and sue. Enrich policy really wanted to also look at like what are some of the mechanisms. In which indigenous people are. Using policy and Law to revitalize indigenous place names and so we looked up land use planning conservation co-management. Events and also modern day treaties and self government agreements in which indigenous peoples are using these different mechanisms available to on to re attribute and revitalize indigenous placing you know this work is being done by indigenous people. So think it's really important to attribute that recognition to them.

Heather Holm on Bee- Friendly Gardens

"It dawned on me that as much as I know and as many experts as spoken to over the years about pollinator plants and pollinator gardens. I. Don't know as much at all about how a B.'s life history really works and what is it? What's a BS I view of my place other than the flowers and I wondered if you could kind of. Introduced us a little bit I know there's many different species of native bees but sort of generally speaking clue into how A. B. C.'s a place like our gardens. Sure. Yeah. As you said, the big the big take home messages just be diversity, right? So thirty thirty, seven, hundred species approximately in the US and each has. Basically, each overwintering in a different life stage than another So it really makes it challenging and our gardens before trying to supply supple supplemental nesting sites. For example, I always get the question well when the bees leave and and it always goes back to well, it depends on the kind of be and the thing to for people to remember is. You, know of those thirty seven hundred species about ninety percent have a solitary lifestyle. So they really have this narrow window of time during the growing season that they're active as adults. So we have you know it or the first base to come out in the spring in our active for four weeks maybe in. April or May depending on where you live But then on the other hand, we have a social be such as our bump native bumblebees and they will be active throughout the growing season and have very different strategies for overwintering. So I can see continue. BUMBLEBEES. Bumblebees I think is a good a good group or whatever to kind of start with them and give us examples of you know there. What are they looking for a? What are they see as a good place you know, etc.. And again beyond the flowers right I, mean, right long long beyond the flowers, the flowers particularly for bumblebees the fall blooming plants or critical because what's happening in the fall is the new queens produced in a bumble bee colony or coming out and they're practicing forging, and while they're visiting flowers to consume nectar, they're they're building up fat stores which will help them for their winter hibernation. So, most people are aware that bumblebees our annual colonies and unlike the European. Honeybee. which you know can survive the winner in the colony can be perennial at the end of the growing season. No matter where you live the bumblebees will perish except for those those new queens that are preparing to hibernate. So they're they're hibernating as adults and they go off and disperse from where they grew up in the nest where their mothers raised them and they're looking for. A, really nice insulated place to spend the winter. So that can be a number of different situations in a garden it. It could be that they tuck themselves into abandoned rodent hole. They may find a a most nest often they they're attracted to mouse nests in I live in the upper midwest we have very cold winters. So they're really looking for you know an insulated place but if you're further south, they may talk themselves just under a heavy pile of leaf litter. some hibernating Queens will people will find in their in their compost piles. Or at the key is you know a place that's

Who Was George Fredrick Handel

"Welcome back to another episode of five minutes in Church history. On this episode, we're talking about a composer George, Frederic Handel and I resist the urge to have upon here and say that we going to get a handle on handle. But let's get a handle on hindle. He was born in sixteen, Eighty five in Hallo- Germany the importance of that year is it was the same year as the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach sixteen eighty five was a great year for the birth of composers apparently, and now Bach to handle and I promise. I'm done with punts. Well handle was originally set to be a lawyer but he loved music and he quickly showed his prowess as an organist and at composing, and so he said off to be a musician. He spent some time traveling around Italy and then he was musician for the elector of Hanover. Now, the importance of the elector of Hanover was that he was the heir to the throne of England and when Queen and died childless the elector of Hanover became King George the. First of England handle moved with him to London and the year was seventeen off and from then on hand spent the rest of his life in Britain, and he's while born in Germany and German descent is known as an English composer under George. The first t founded the Royal Academy of Music, which he directed for fifteen years early on in London Handel composed for King George the first his famous water music or as in handles beloved German Tongue vassar music. The first time it was performed for King George loved it so much. He ordered it played again and then he ordered it played again. So debuted three times in a row in seventeen seventeen. After. He finished his time handle finished his time at the Royal Academy of Music. He spent much of the Seventeenth Thirties writing operas, and then he said about to write what might be considered his magnum opus the Messiah. Handel. was by all accounts obsessed with work. We would say today a workaholic and he poured himself into his work as a composer as a musician. Sadly in seventeen fifty one he went blind and then in seventeen, fifty, nine, the age of seventy four he died in, London? He was buried in Westminster Abbey and of course, the grand organ of the Abbey and the choir played his beloved. Messiah. Handel one said I should be very sorry if I only entertained them referring to the people who listen to his music, he wanted people to not only be entertained but to beat moved by his music and that was certainly the case with the Messiah. The Messiah was first performed in Dublin on April thirteen, seventeen, forty two it was performed the next year in London and King George the second was in the audience attending and when he got to the chorus for part to the Hallelujah Chorus King George, the second was moved that he stood up, and of course, when the king stands everyone else stands in. So the whole theater stood alongside of the king and that started tradition of standing during the Hallelujah course. The Messiah is in three parts. Part one begins with prophecies of the. Coming Messiah from Isaiah and Psalms, and takes us right to the shepherds watching their flock at night on Bethlehem's hillsides. Then part two covers the passion, the suffering in-depth of Christ and ends with that Hallelujah course part three picks up with Christ's resurrection and continues with his ascension and what theologians call his present session in glory, and then it ends with the day of judgement to come as the Messiah the king comes in glory. Well, that is Handel's Messiah and when he was finished writing the musical score, he signed it s D. G. Solely Dale Gloria.

Breonna's Law: Why we need police reform

"And. I'm really excited talk today's and gas. We know that one of the things that's going to be on the ballot this election season is criminal justice reform and we think about criminal justice reform. We really don't think about all the ways all offices where we vote for people and they have an impact, and today we're going to be speaking to two women in elected office who had been leading on criminal justice. Reform issues. We have state's attorney I-I've brave boy from Maryland in Kentucky State representative. Avocado. Scott in true fashion I we have to start with having you tell us what you're you into politics and we'll start with you state's attorney. Well, that's a great question. Actually I, had no intentions in getting into politics really it was my father who want to work on a campaign. He knows sometimes you have the your parents even as adults. That's. Asked. Me I was going to be a lawyer told him down and. Then, he told me I think I like you to work on his campaign I. Think you need to get politically as like now they're not. WanNa do that. But that the person who? Wanted. To work for happen to have graduate from the same law school that I will. The Howard University School of law. I'm did okay. Another in help bison out. Ever since V. I love how Howard alums Y'all always get an issue it can do no. Just regular conversation. How are you today? Oh I went to Howard. Thank you. Scott. Tell us whether you into politics. Definitely, you know state's attorney brave boy our fathers I mean you know it's their fault. So. I was born in. My Dad gave me my name Attica I'm named after the prison in upstate New York born a few months after the uprisings there in. So I didn't have a choice Ashanti really didn't in. So early on I got involved in a right out of college classmates run for city also in Knoxville Tennessee because I went away to ABC you is well, it's our on his campaign and then my full time job was at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and director was a county commissioner who became the first woman mayor of Maciel Tennessee and I came back home and I was involved with organized Labor at jobs with justice in ended up having. To me that I needed to run for office in. So because my friends mostly black and Brown women encouraged me to run for office. That's how I. Got Involved I love it in Y'all Attica is my emerge sister she went through emerged Kentucky and I remember the first time. I. Got to email her for something and I was so excited because I finally get to work with Atacan. Something is your pie vaccine my email she said, hey, queen and I almost died unlike y'all Attica call me queen because that's the way I, feel about her so you are just so fabulous and I wanNA start with having. US. Talk about retailers case because I think there's so much here particularly with you wrap Scott you just had an op Ed in the Washington Post after the verdict you are out protesting with your daughter named Ashanti another reason why Atacan I are meant to be best friends and you were arrested in. You've been dealing with the aftermath of that. You've sponsored Brianna Law for Kentucky. You're the only black woman currently in the Kentucky State House. So let's let's dissect this case in state's attorney boy I. Know You have a lot to add is the fact that there were no knock warrants how they handle just paperwork body cameras the grand jury I know that something that has really piece Pete People's interests about this grand jury in Oh what does this attorney general deal? So Rep Scott First let's talk about your op-ed why you felt you had to write it in a cave really personal place you said, this is personal to me. Sean in and I'm on this podcast with Queens. Come on State Attorney Ray boy This is power in so. Yes I happy that Opportunity Washington Post invited me to write a piece just from the perspective whatever that was on things going on here in Louisville Kentucky, and so that's exactly what I did I poured my heart into it as a mother of two black children. Masan is the same age as Taylor Madonna's nineteen. She wanted to be an emt in them. Brianna Taylor was murdered and she said to me Ma that didn't protect her from police violence I'm not sure this. So this is really pulling on us in shanty the people relieving leading the Front Lines here in Louisville for justice for Taylor are mostly women is so we're feeling this heavily. So yes, we've back to now to grandeur WANNA speak out. So that says to me that the Attorney General for Kentucky was so inept that in such a failure that you have rand jurors who want the right to speak out to say, he did not give us all of the options in front of us. There was no one there to speak for Briana Taylor in that this whole process was a sham that's where we all right now that says something about the continued. Kushner justice for Taylor in that's why we won't give up and that's why this movement is sustained
