A county with his directives. A big one was reducing eliminating sentencing enhancements, which adds significant prison time. Of course, he has no interest in the death penalty. All he wants to do is chase after police officers. That's this big thing. He wants to stop enforcing California Three strikes law all of this stuff. That's what Gascon has decided to do to L. Or jack kirby all the singlet will read a minute. I got this whole page workers. I want to do the whole design. You all sudden you know they they treat the the page you know. They're not just looking at a cheer. They're looking at entire page designing the story realm yet and that's an period of important artistic. Leap is made with comic books which the early artists didn't have you know it. Took these guys these geniuses. Like furry creek starring in tolls. Ill these other guys who call on in totally changed idea of design. That's interesting do you think i in your that kinda ties in like in your research. Is there it of you know black artists that you're identifying. Are there some of them. That are inventive. In ways that may be the medium like didn't get you know like that credit would go to like you just said all those names that that comics history is familiar with like what are what are some of the inventions that you saw as far man baker again back baker meant it was probably one of the five most influential comical arms all time even though people don't realize it yeah. Tired me biggert accountable. There's always like a sexual element that that they had. You know an underlying sexual element because they knew that most of the people reading comics for young boys. Yeah you know it's just like you know of the like sexual violence you know. So when it was kind of understated in a little bit all sudden you get. Baker comes in one thousand nine hundred forty four in his his. His point of reference. You know wasn't You know looking at just illustrating a story. He was interested in doing like. I feel strongly all sleep girly artwork. Yeah he totally changed the comic book industry. I mean after he started his he worked for jerry iger shop. I realize this wholesome media in. He started on june covers. Well he came with every single. Cover front center. You'll this girl was her skirt Way up rules. No close on an upi cini type thing like the phantom lady something like that in a totally crazy so everybody was copying him. Well that carries over even today. I mean if you look at concentrate in the nineteen nineties even you know whole period of time there which you know semi pornographic alms stuff that they're putting up debt is all over Bigger actualized comic book artwork for by for veteran for worse defend right. Yeah i mean look like ling. Last week in this one talk. I said that was close to pornography is a folk your way was gonna get in nineteen forty five. Is these kind of books. Yeah looking to cover see did or even especially the interior artwork. There's no doubt about what he was trying to sell their. You didn't care so much. I'll tell the story at the time. And it's because it was one learned a few areas of. Bob are that would hire blacks and also is worth. A few areas of crucial art was really a burgeoning at the time And even though he didn't make a lot of money at least you can pay the bills so about three or four years. It's just amazing story of this man. I mean jean. He'll literally out of nowhere. Yeah he'll sitting in prison stuff. Used one many people like that so each one of these guys at a unique story. Yeah no it's a remarkable life and and so many of them do We're one of the. I think really fun pieces of this book is is the you know interspersing the actual comics that these individuals created right and and really giving you a feel for the golden age. Work that they were doing much of which is very much. If you've read your golden age dc stuff which i think is where a lot of like readers today might go back and be like what was superman like what was wonder woman like right. It's got a similar vibe and feel right but the reprints here are like the really high quality it gives you a good sense of these stories. Were but also like individual artistic merits and inartistically. Ticks of some of these creators. How did you go about sort of securing these these reprints and like getting them to look so good. What was that process like to me. I'd give all credits my publisher. Who's craig yo but it's been around forever net as a writer. Artist's publisher edgar is done..

"Of invisible men the trailblazing black artists of comic books. It's a really interesting historical book. Struggle work about the golden age of comics and these black readers black artists. Who were really here to for a very very rarely discussed if disgusted it. all right. This work was was often Dramatically dramatically overlooked in kenya. This amazing amazing historical work here to sort of not only talk about the work in the comics you know impact that these individuals had but just you know their lives in kinda who they were and and what got you into this point and sort of their contributions in the industry but then also elsewhere i think has made it a makes a really fascinating read so i enjoyed digging into this. I wanna talk to you about the project Let me start here. How how did you get started on this work and kind of how did it come about Because i know. I i've seen in other interviews. You know it's a fifteen year process research on but what was kind of the. What was the thing that got. You started down that path. Well i've been writing about and researching the comic book history or about fifty years. I started back whereas the seventies do this in my focus. Mainly on love craters themselves yards the writers and some types of publishers put comics together and that was up twenty years back Wonder something about matt baker. Who's one of my favorite golden age artists net in a lot of people golden age collectors will recognize. This work is known for what's called girl. Art work a lot of these jungle cleans and phantom lady stop. He's just tremendous artist. Well anyway nobody knew anything about matt baker time other than the fact that he was black he died young but there was no biographical information about him anywhere. Long story short. I did a lot of asking. A lot of all. Throughout researchers historians and finding somebody directly toward a retired black cartoonist. Sam joyner who lived in philadelphia and they said that He knew a lot of these older black artists and he possibly be personnel. Should talk to anyway way. I wrote the mr joyner. got back. A four-page letter from the Not mentioned that. He met matt baker but he met some other cartoonists in his youth. Any he sent me a whole pack of clippings and newspaper articles everything about saudis different ours just opened up a whole new world. Two days in a it was something i if that time. I never even considered that. You know there are a whole array of black artist. You know because if the time lock people thought that baker the only black artists work during the golden age of comics during the nineteen forties s. Yeah which if you think about. It doesn't really make sense. you know. Even statistically show did more than one thousand persons working in outlook industry anyway starting with what. Mr joyner gave me to work list. I started looking into the background. Saw these artists whether it was nothing to find at least not in the white media so are totally changed. My focus in what i did is i started researching black media particularly newspapers and magazines and was it was a project because there's no single resources united states for that unlike white media where a lot of libraries of we'll have our ties them like say new york times or washington post. There's nothing like that for black newspapers. And so i had literally start scouring the country writing the different people in looking on internet tackled people piecing together what i could find I would find steed newspapers in one library or You know a one of a monster to another lackner..

"Yeah. So today we're discussing Michelle. mouton. A woman. We've this is this the first time we've discussed a woman on the show. This might be the first episode dedicated to a lady. which is a bit embarrassing. I would say so yeah. But no better woman to start off this trend with and Michelle. She is easily one of the best rally drivers ever. She's a beast. So I'm really stoked that we can tell the story even if it took us a little while to get to it, that's on us but but it's interesting because motorsport is really one of the sports where women and men compete against each other as true like she's not the best. Female driver ever. She's one of the best rally drivers at. Yeah. Regardless of gender she's one of the greatest. and honestly like just watching a video of her rally driving makes me sweat. Over, yeah she's like she's the person who when we talk about. Like rally cars now are all-wheel-drive. Wheel drive. But when Audi showed up with quattro and just started smoking everybody that was Michelle. Meantime that was young Mouton Bay. mouton on the track. Yeah I mean. To your point James like drag racing of course is or was kind of dominated by women at one point all the force sisters were just tearing it up. There's really no reason. For it to be separated by gender in in Motor Sport Really of course right now there's the there's the W. series, which is a like a women's open-wheel series. At I think that's more for them to kind of get exposure and it proved themselves in like a formula car but I'm looking forward to seeing some of those drivers come up in the formula. One. Soon hopefully, it would just make it more interesting for crying out loud if nothing else I agree let's get into it a. all right. Let's fired up. The Idyllic town of Gross France, the perfume capital of the world grassi surrounded by fields of aromatic flowers and home to Francis. Oldest perfumery GALLIMARD. Look I'm friend by far French is the language that I have the hardest time pronouncing both words and names I apologize profusely to anyone with a modicum of sense of how to pronounce stuff I. Think you're doing great. I think I think here like right there. Thank you, Joe, unlike many drivers whose family have a history in the sport returns family made a living growing roses and jasmine for the perfume industry mouton spent her youth skiing doing ballet and excelling in school. But just beyond the flower fields sat the mountain. Stages used for local rallies and wouldn't be long before the engine notes trickling down into the valley beckoned to Michelle mcgann discovered her love of cars at fourteen years old when she would steal her father. Pierre's Citron to seavy and take it out for joyrides. Quote for me at the time a car always meant freedom and independence she said but driving wasn't something she could possibly see a future in it for anyone to envision that path for mere enjoyment to making something your life's purpose but you could argue this especially from. Models for women on the racing stage were few and far between. So after graduating high school Bhutan took up odd jobs working as a ski instructor, a Care Assistant in a home for the disabled and eventually at her father's insurance company until she began studying to be a lawyer but something unexpected would quickly put an end to that career path her entry into a competitive rock and roll dance contest.

The Inspirational Tech Startup Story Behind ClassDojo
"Podcast is proof that technology works best when it brings people together. An each day. We have a guest on myself sharing our experiences, and then I invite you to join the conversation listening all over the world. And for you to do the same and share your insights and your experiences. This is one of many reasons why I'm excited to get today's guests on which is I'm Chaudhry, and he's the co founder and CEO at class Dojo and game onto the podcast today. Because Klesko Joe's vision is to help every child on earth get the education that they live, and they think that the way to change education is not from the top down. But from the ground up by serving teachers children and families and making education happen every day. And this is the I really love class Dojo start as a communication apt to help them come together as a community and is beginning to help them get the educational experiences that they need for their children. Both a new from Acer great story, and you're gonna love this one so book elope and hold until I so I can be meal is all the way to San Francisco. So we can speak with Sam Chowdhury co founder and CEO of class Dojo. Massive. Well, welcome to the show. Sound kenny? Tell the listeners who and what you do. Yep. Hi, I'm sorry. I'm Sam the co founder and CEO Quattro. Joe? We think the consumer education company like Liam, and I British we moved to California little over seven years ago to start cost John we both had backgrounds in education. So I went to this funky school in my teams which encourage the teach was was learn. So I ended up teaching for like twenty hours a week. They might teams which is kind of a wild expense and then teaching off to college wasn't McKinsey in their education. Gluten London and make underneath them a bunch of stuff in most recently that they need. In in computer, science focused on technology in classrooms, and we met and we wanted to do more and education. So we ended up we have for new investors who wanted just sits back this and crossed educated emerged from them. And today there is a communication what connects teachers and children and families. It helps them share more often more postively about what's happening at school now home so anything can afraid and videos messages little bit supposed to feedback and that really helps to build a close knit community around the classroom education. Kind of business is an experience that is created by people working together. And so helping the people on the ground doing the work together better like a really important coal for and kind of that Sunday shift community now has been built in processes and homes like or unrolled actually one hundred eighteen countries. You know, these tens of millions of kids. And and that's exciting. We think that the real opportunity for us an division from these classes reading the to help likely charters get an education that they tell you mentioned a few moments ago that when you was at school they taught you have to teach as well. As learn how old we see says, he says fantastic angle. Yeah. It was pretty cool. I was this age like thirteen to to the end of school, actually. So the backstory that privacy that younger survey smooth school on this is in Wales and eighteen kids or something. And then the older, isn't it this next school that coaches to teach was about three thousand kids, and so really the real danger that kids just kind of get lost. And they ended up having Samedan system. When like they heard you to come in like lunchtimes after school that take over some of the core kind of curriculum process. And so we taught like small groups and big groups and are in grade level and younger grades. And then putting cool expense. I've recently glossy winds told fortune that seventy percent of sales come from word of mouth an organic connections. So while Grassi is shaping. The future of beauty by leveraging influences, it quickly struck me is class Dojo is doing exactly the same in education by leveraging teachers and families and is the world's most widely used communication app for pre K eight schools, but can you offer an overview
