I don't know if you remember those, but they look like little tiny oval Friends, and we add Pokémon cards. Well, right now, the collectibles are all miniature in size. Not all, but a large, large majority of them. Kids are collecting normal things that they would see in everyday life, but in many form. And one of those I have right here actually, this is the MGA mini verse. Now, MGA has a load of very popular brands, LOL surprise, brats, little tykes. Well, they've taken all of those and they've put them into miniature form. Little tiny pieces, some of them about the size of a quarter. What's exciting about this line several of them have lots of fun accessories, but the make it mini food is a huge trend. So I don't know if you've seen on social media, but people making little tiny food is something that has been followed. Well, now, our kids and yes, adults are actually making little tiny food. Now this food isn't edible, but it will come with all the components you're gonna make the food, whether it might be donuts or cupcakes or pie. Maybe a shake, you're actually going to create that food And this is something that the kids are collecting. "To make bras for men and for people who might identify as a different gender that there's a whole new market of inclusivity that is coming out of around, which is really, really exciting. And that's going to be very different, right? Because somebody who maybe was born a biological male is going to have different proportions, perhaps yes, in a typically right, you would have that larger size and oftentimes they would have breast implants. So yes, that would be a different need when it comes to bras and a lot of companies are doing that. I also learned when I launched the gem bra, I had a bunch of people write to me on TikTok and say, can you make a binder? And I thought that was so interesting. So a lot of them non binary people, they look for something to bind the breasts and call the binder. And they were like, we would love a binder with a crystal, a healing crystal in the center of the love the idea we love the concept, and I was like, oh my gosh, I would love to do this for you. I will definitely put that in my plans for the future. So it's really interesting to see how even just the 15 years that I've been circulating around in the industry that see how things have evolved for people. I mean, it's just, it's wonderful. Are you going to say you're going to do a binder? I would love to. So my I launched as a startup basically during the pandemic because I had a prototype and I pitched it to QVC and I won their big fine contest. And so I did one production run self funded one bra for QVC. Thank you. So which was like still scares me to death, to be honest with you that I'm like every day I wake up in a sweat.

"Event this fall. So stay tuned for more details on that. I'm Mark gurman, this is power on. Thank you, Mark. I want to stick with Amazon's prime event and bring him Melissa burdick, pack through president in a ten year Amazon, a veteran. So Melissa, anecdotally I feel like I got a few more things on prime day than usual. I don't know if that is an example of a broader trend, but how did it stack up for you? Yeah, well, if you notice what he was just talking about in terms of what people were buying, it was different this year. There is a bigger focus on household essentials and home. Usually prime day is a big consumer electronics event, big ticket item event. But this year, I think that we're seeing a lot of inflationary impact where food prices are up over 12% versus the inflation average of 9%. So people were coming in looking for deals, deals were at least 30% off in the food space. And so tough items day one were things like Frito lay chips, Amazon basic trash bags, cascade dish pods. This is a different year for things like that. So I think that what we're seeing is just the different categories shift of what people are actually buying this year. Why did it take so long for Amazon to get it right? I mean, I feel like we've talked about so many prime days over the years. We're underwhelming. You know, I think, honestly, Amazon did not lead as much with their electronic items or brand when they had all these deeply discounted products. Their products were discounted up to 48% off. So they definitely had a good year with their own private label products. In the past, I, to me, I always thought instant pot, iRobot, 23andMe DNA kits. Those were kind of the big products that they were always pushing. But this year, they did a couple of different things. One was they had better personalization, widget. So when you logged into Amazon, you had more personalized items that were for you. So that might have been a way that you found things. They also had a better emphasis on influencer marketing. In my opinion, that had a hit and a miss. So the hit was they did a much better job of priming influencers on Amazon to drive havoc to Amazon. The myth that I saw this year that has just been a continuation of Amazon live stream. So that's kind of their QVC like influencers talking about products and some of the Cheddar that I've heard about is people didn't really find it productive or engaging, although it was something Amazon called out today and their notes that they had a 100 million views of their live stream. So it continues to be something that they focus on. But hopefully they will get a better for prime debut too coming in the fall. Let's talk about V two. What do you think they'll learn from this and what do you expecting this fall? You know, that's the beauty of Amazon. It's this constant hotbed of test and learns. And so this personalization, this influencer marketing, the ways that people are buying more products, they're going to learn from that and they're going to focus on a V two. One of the other things I like about the prime day in October, they did this in 2020 when they moved prime day during the pandemic from the summer to the fall and they moved demand forward. And that really spread out the demand during the whole Q four. And I kind of sped up, you know, people buying things earlier in Q four. So it has a lot of benefits for Amazon. And something that we haven't talked about as much is advertising on Amazon. I understand that that was a more interesting story. This prime day around. Well, every prime day, people always spend more money. It was a little bit of a question because of inflation and raising costs with advertisers come in, but they absolutely did. We actually did a study, a sample size of a sample size of some of our clients. And we saw that CPM increased 36 to 75% above normal levels, but also there were millions more impression volumes. That means that just so much traffic that they're able to take advantage of. Amazon also has this great metric for especially CPG companies called new to brand. That metric shows incremental people are coming in and buying their brand and that was a hundreds of basis points. So maybe it's a certain maybe it's not just that the deals were better. It's that the advertising was also more effective. Yeah, and it was just

"Going to happen anyways I'm looking at new forms of commerce how people are creating new formats whether it's video or AI driven I'm a particularly excited about companies that use AI at the forefront meaning how are they rethinking an entire experience with AI to begin with or video to begin with So I'm excited about AI and video in particular And how do you think you take us 5 years out How will we be shopping differently because of AI because of video Let's say 5 years from now I think video shopping is going to be very common mainstream behavior of 5 years out which means that you are going to be shopping from all kinds of platforms means you're not just going to be shopping on ecommerce platforms even You'll be shopping from social media platforms or other platforms that you spend a lot of time on I also think with AI that means you're going to have much better personalization And that's going to improve the shopping experience for everyone across the board Ideally that means people are returns Ideally that means you're buying things that fit your style You're buying things that naturally delight you So AI is just a wonderful way to give a more personalized shopping experience So is this like a smarter version of QVC on social media In some ways QVC of course is one of the original shopping video platforms But I think if you look at what happened in China in the last two three years you get a glimpse of what's possible in the U.S. And in many ways China video shopping is now one of the most popular ways to shop And people are doing it on their smartphones all throughout the day and you can buy literally anything on a online.

"It's honestly as long as you're from an authentic place of a lot of times. People will ask me like you just about a specific mike personally. I've never used a blue yeti and people go what do you think about it. Hey honestly. I've never personally used it. I've heard people use it. These are the things that i know about it from an audio scientific standpoint in. I'll answer it in that way where i'm not you know. I talking about the gaming computers all the time. I don't have all the gaming computers. I just understand how the parts were. And so when i suggest i say these are the things i would look for if i was shopping for a computer. Okay i love that. I love the you said that. Because i do think that for example when you know when people ask me for advice i'm like oh i can talk about these specific things have but i can't tell you my approach towards how i do my research how i look into things to consider and so you know i. I love that what you said to be just being honest like like hey i've never i can't. I mean you probably would love to be able to say you've played with all the gaming computers but that's impossible. I mean that's pretty much impossible but But you can go into say here. The things to think about you know here. Here's what i how. I would approach it. Here's my recommendation. So and then go through scenarios i. I've seen some of these people on amazon lives. They will go through scenario so like. Oh okay well that fits me. That's my budget. So therefore i'm gonna go with this. And i think that that's actually kind of a smart way to do and also again you're letting your audience be you know you're letting them find their place and then you're basically their guide and i think that's the whole point. Is that if you're gonna do this amazon live. You are the guide right. you're not the manufacturer. You're not the person who's who like the difference between qvc and home shopping network is is that they actually have the representatives from these companies from these products talking and pitching the products whereas amazon live. You know i'm watching somebody. They're not from there. There are some of those cases. But i think what we're talking about is our if you're gonna approach him on live then think of yourself as the guide you know your audience you know what they're interested in you know. What can you be an expert in. what can you help. Guide people towards and making a purchase decision. And then. i think you know something. I was thinking about is literally. You always have the return policy. You can always remind everyone of their return policy. Right is that is that okay to mention that while you're on amazon life but say it every time the i k look if you try to fifty dollar get does it work. There's a return and make sure you look at it with you. Now you know fifty dollars and get the start. Yeah yeah exactly. And there's a comment from dean here. By the way dean says you know.

"It's that whole energy and putting it into like this pre show announcement always always gets me. It's kind of. It's a nice thing to say when you're that level of comedian where you're going to be digging in. It's kind of almost necessary to tell the audience. Hey just just go with it you know. Yeah and she's very she's so she's so like in that same special. Whatever opening jokes. she's like. I'm the best comedian. You can see the best act today in price range. I love that. I love that. She wasn't a above anything you know. I think that's i think that's what makes me like. Love her more than just like her work itself. You know 'cause she. She did write movies like she. Did you write books. She hosted stand up specials. Basically hose in directing a film. that didn't yup. Yup she she. She succeeded and she failed and then she also did stuff like again she. I was talking about in bed with joan just a little digital series. She sold things on. Qvc like nothing was too precious. Nothing was to like. Oh i'm not gonna do that. Which having yet. I think was like borne simultaneously. I mean it's hard not to do what you have to do to make money when you drastically need money. Like she did at some points in her career. But i also just love that sal. Because i think so. Many people in entertainment are very very precious about how they direct their energy. Which on one hand is important but if it comes from just like a spot of lake. I don't want people to look down on this like at the end of the day. You gotta do two things. You gotta put put bread on the table and you should probably have a good time doing it. And that's that's my goal as a person and as someone in the entertainment industry so like i really vibe with that sounds like a perfect time to move onto the ratings. Does this work all right. So we are gonna rate joan rivers on a scale of zero to ten using something else as a reference point so it can be another stand up comedian. It could be something else. Funny could even be a chocolate chip cookie so you could say hey. chocolate chip. cookies are innate outta ten. Joan rivers is a ten out of dan way better than chocolate chip cookies. And if that doesn't make sense i'll go first so i will rate joan rivers against another Aforementioned comedian who i love. Who's jokey joke Norm macdonald recently passed away. Love nor mcdonald would watch specials over and over again watches clips over and over again all throughout my life I'm gonna give him a ten out of ten joan rivers. I so like. I said she's somebody who i do really like before. This conversation really appreciated. It didn't really follow much of her apprentice or fashion police. Stuff more of old clips Just they do come up when you're looking at old rodney dangerfield clips nor mcdonald clips. If you go down the youtube rabbit hole. You're going to go to joan rivers as well. Who'll exactly so an ten years have had employment ten years you could. You could name you to people that went on in-person job interview and and that's the problem that that's that's why. I think my daughter just got to so what they do is the first interview is on zoom and The second interview if in person and As a matter of fact when she went on a second interview. I don't i don't i don't think she wore through no. She wore Nice pair of pants and a knife cloud. It was very very casual dress casual. She got both jobs so she had to make a choice of which one to take. But they do in person interviews okay so he wouldn't go to. Qvc for interview imports interview. Okay so you heard soups anymore. Now that that's not a you know it depends. I guess depending on the job for a company right so but you just you just said just validated say. Her first interview was on his own conference. But she's still the second second what was in that she didn't even discuss casual my whole things. Maybe the job then cough address just poor position for a ceo. Be sharp be tangible. I understand you know. I'm not saying i understand that. But there is a large percentage of corporate folks regular folks that have these job. Openings did not do an in person interviews right now when they are off for paralegal so it was an engineering company They see and every morning they should go down to. She's looks very nice. dressy casual. of course. I'm not saying i'm not saying there's certain of course certain jobs we have to look nice and get it. I'm just saying that pre cove it the whole marketplace. Yeah you had to interview. This would make sense to me. This would make says. Hey everybody h. and The campaign in two thousand eighteen and made a mix a lot of sense to me because now all the men could go get the blue and going out there and try to get the job. I'm just saying yes it's still going on. But the percentage is very low for in person interview right right right right right the first interview. But i think sean. And what I have on there is something very interesting because it's a little bit difficult to run a business office. So I actually decided that I might try and use a business coach, but for you, I think that's important. I have no idea what business coach can do. So what I did is I wrote an article another article, my second article for Entrepreneur magazine and its Club Do I need a business coach? Oh, such a good question. And I interviewed 15 business coaches. Wow, I'll give people. Yeah, I need one. And what's the right fit? And finally, I actually hired one for me. Good for you. Good for you, he's getting me back home again. I could do myself, but it's much nicer to have him, help me. Absolutely. And what I did is I have fifteen interviews. They're all on my website, but they're also on the YouTube channel. I mean, who wants to see the interviews about also on Instagram and Linkedin? And my Facebook page. Oh good. Perfect. That's wonderful. So is there one last bit of advice? You'd like to leave with my Boomer Nation today? Yes I would. Okay great there's something that I have on my desk and yep. Going to read it to you, okay? This is my Aaron Hanson. And it says, what if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what? If you fly. So important when you flew you absolutely flew and you keep flying higher every day. And if I don't, it's nothing lost. I'm having the time of my life when you never know where things are going to lead, you just took that first step and then the next step and one thing led to another to another and perhaps and us baby boomers have so much to share with the world..

"I'm going to do it and I said, you know, I'm really sorry I don't have my product yet, but this is my home. This is these are pictures of what it's going to look like. And they lucked out but they said we can't do anything with you until you have a product. So why don't you come back next year? Do you have your product? So, I did, I went back a year later with my product and they had the same panel from QVC and they sent to you. Remember I said, yes. And I said, well, I remember you, too and you told me to come back when I have a product and here is my product. So I pitched it and they all applauded and I was the only girl who was pitching, who got an Applause. From other other inventors also. So they actually put me onto. Wow, that's incredible. A few months later. So I got a QVC and I think they liked the problem that I was persistent. I don't give up. That's one thing I want to tell people at any age but I think we're addressing Baby Boomers which I know one thing. I don't give up and I think they liked it when you're persistent and actually, after I got in QVC, somebody interviewed me and wrote two articles for a magazine that's in the tux wage QVC. And they wrote about me that I was an unlikely inventor and I love that. I love that because I like to do things that are not expected of me. And I encourage everybody to just don't think about what you can't do, think about how to do what you want to do. And at this age, we have everything on our side, to do my life because our kids are grown up. We don't have to worry about them. You know, we don't have to pay for college anymore and our retirement is our retirement and we also have wisdom on our side and we have one more advantage. And that is, I am not afraid to fail. Because, you know, because all of us have failed many times, but we always know that if we keep going at some point, we will succeed. So, I'm off when you're older, you don't have to be afraid of failure because we know that it's not the end of the world. So I would like to share that wisdom to other people. So, there's a lot of benefits from. Yes, yes, I actually wrote an article for a Entrepreneur magazine, which somehow they accepted, it was in January of this year and it was called six reasons why entrepreneurship is good for a while. Wow, that's incredible. Yeah, so that's on my website actually, then article that I wrote and I got a lot of feedback on it and I'm actually rather than just being inventor. I think I'm an advocate for people off. Your age like retirement. Not, what do we watch?.

Chi, Connie is a Serial entrepreneur award-winning inventor author of how I got my product on QVC. The Today Show The View and More in retirement and creator of right yourself e and Grandma preneur, he did all of this after retiring as an adjunct professor Sir teaching technical writing at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University. Welcome Connie. How are you today? I'm great. Thank you for interviewing me. Terry, how are you? Do, you're welcome. I'm so excited because like I said, you're you've been on my radar for a while because I don't know that there's a ton of people our age that are inventing new products, but why not that we should be doing that. We have a little bit more time and, you know, we can think things through and especially products that people our age need. We're the ones that are going to think of those things, right? That's exactly right. So, take us back to 2014 when you had an idea for a product but no prototype and you approached QVC at a trade fair. Then what happened with us? How that went? Well I actually started thinking of this product as I started getting old and my eyes started getting worse actually birth. Grew Older, the print always got smaller. That's so when I would go out to restaurants, I had a really hard time reading the menu. So I had to always ask somebody to do it for me and then I had to look for light and it was just like kind of frustrating. So usually it would just says the server was good. So I decided even though I had never been an adventure or knew anything about inventing. I made a product and this is my product. It's called tipping split and it has a magnifier. It has a long night but when the restaurant is dark and then they can also figure out the tip and split the bill in 3 seconds. Wow, yeah. Yeah, you do that because it's not like a little calculator for people who are just listening to the podcast, it looks like a little calculator but it's so much more does so many things..

"That thing that was you know kind of you know had been done before maybe or you know was nothing new or that that now also kind of set me on my journey for my particular style for mine meaning different sustain. That made me different from everybody else. You know what. I'm saying being so and this works for everyone. Okay and the reason. I tell the stories because this works. If you're in beauty this works if you make cabinets this works if you do hair this works. If you're a jewelry designer what is your meaningful difference right and listen to your whisper and go for that. That is the one you'll win. I have to tell you. I think i. I've been lucky to work with some fabulous fabulous makeup artist and you know being on camera being in front. Generally the makeup artist is the last person to touch your face to be in your life. And i think probably part of what is you so successful is the fact that you are so positive. You're positively is infectious. And i'm sure every single one of the people that you have touched has gone on and been able to kind of suck a little bit of out of you and take it into their job seriously. I do know that's so funny that you say that because i never set out to be a celebrity makeup artist. That wasn't ever a plan for me. I just wanted to do makeup. I literally just wanted no matter who it was. It didn't matter to me. I just wanted to touch people safe. Touch people's bodies turned into whatever kind of crazy art we could do or just make people feel good but that was again my agent. That was jim. He said listen. He's like remember a long time ago he was like. I just think that celebrities are gonna be really important. They're going to transition out of models being on the cover of magazines and it's gonna be celebrities. And i'm going to focus your career undoing celebrities because you're just like this big cup of coffee in the morning your mama even before with a mama. I've always been a momma. Yeah and and. I just love and i love watching people shine. I love watching people grow. I love watching people do well. And i'm a cheerleader man. And that's so. It's kind of what i do and i love you. I love you. i feel like Like we are sisters from another. Mr i do you know. I want to be respectful of your time because they knew you had things today. I do have a question. Because i am upset with the data sticks. I'm wearing them today. A little social video. That i'm going to be putting up Right now i'm wearing in the autumn. Inner and the burnished bronze. So i love these because they stay on it super easy but i know that there's like you know we talked about this new beauty life. You've got like thirty seconds before these are set that yet. What are you used to blend. so basically what. I've been taking this burnished bronze and then up. Sorry i take. The light won the autumn shimmer and then burnished bronze in the crease. Yup yup what you used to blend them. Do you use a by. I use a brush. I use mostly use my fingers so like for example i would take it set on. You're putting it on your crease. They're very very creamy. And i'm literally will just take my finger. It's again it depends on what kind of look you're going for. And what kind of thing you're doing truth be told. I'll tell you how i did like an i like this. We just kind of like a soft. Smokey is i would thank you. I did it in five minutes What i do is i would take an eye shadow stick like so. I would glided all over my lid. Basically from lash. Line to mike crease. And then so that's all. You wanna do great lender with your finger by having i say if you do wanna smoke it out or you want to give even more dimension. I would take something like this. This is my rupaul pallet. Love it. I cannot say again paul ruhollah. That's the whole that's another show. We need like at least five. Show gone down mama so you know it have locked up but then i would take like an eye shadow and literally just used to blend so you can go right on top of your shadow sticks. They work you can show primer so of your powder. I put the shadow stick on the powder on tap. And then jane girl you first of all you bulletproof and ain't coming out so you decide to take it off and then you've got like the beautiful smokes out the also which i love. I love it. Melian him one. I wanna bring you back on. Because they knew there was like a lot of exciting things up in store and if people want to play with your makeup. It's so much fun. "I literally just clocked it in the chair and i'm like okay. I'm here let's go. I wanna learn everything and that's really what happened and then rolling up your sleeves getting your hands dirty and doing the work being a celebrity makeup artist. I need to say this. Thousand times is not glamorous. Listen i know. Instagram has changed the world. And you look at these makeup artists and god bless them yes. They are living the life and listen. I've been on a private plane or to let right right lane right right okay. And i'm they're doing the work doing the work and so she utah beyond say what was she. I mean i. I met beyond say in two thousand and two okay and that's a whole conversation about how that day changed. My life or elite changed my life and change the course of my career and who i was and how i was going to How i was going to create my destiny right so i. That's that's kind of. I'll tell you the quick story. Give it to me. Yeah it is one of those things that really defines who you are so long story short. I kind of just. When i decided i wanted be a makeup artist. I was like okay. I'm just going to do everything. I'm going to do every single job. I'm going to never say anything. I had an agent who was very pushy. Very fierce high twenty something years later. He's still my agent. Still very pushy. Love you but anyway. So and he honestly was like. You're going to do every job i say. Trust me when i tell you it will pay off so gets me Calls me when days like listen. You have avid gig for you. I know you know beyond say she was. She's an brand called. Destiny's child was like die. Everyone knows beyond say. But he's like she's coming out with a film called austin powers goldmember and she plays foxy cleopatra. He's got and she's got a premier tonight in new york. So you need to go to her hotel do her makeup rub blah blah sound like okay and and and of course as makeup artists. You it's silly for you not to go in and have a plan right. So that's the thing it's like you look okay relax ward. He's back anyway. Fiancee told me. Wait all gone your story. Thank you so so Probably go and i say and and and so no and remember this is the early two thousands and it's all about a beat and it's all about kind of like strong makeup and lots of foundation and but that's just what we did you know and i did too but i i saw her. I walked in. And i had this thing. She walked in not a stitch of makeup big curly blonde afro gold encrusted gown. No shoes not a stitch of makeup on her face. And i looked at her and i was like my my bubble. My whisper said you cannot put make up on that face like you just can't like the war. I got chills all over my body. And i was like the world needs to see what i'm looking at right now. Which is this woman essentially naked. Probably not even moisturizer. Now that i know her so well after all these years probably lucky. We watched her face busy. Changing the world's gonna worry too much about that stuff anyway. And i said i'm just not gonna do it. I'm not going to beat her down like we're used to doing so. She sits down. I i kid you not amber a little concealed under. i think i filled in a browse. Simas kara you know. I made a little highlight or remember this one hundred years ago. I used to make all my own makeup because we didn't have it to buy anyway ten minutes later. I'm like okay. You're finished and she was like excuse. Me no makeup takes two hours. And i said again. I don't know where this came from. I said girl with junk base and my makeup. It takes ten minutes and you are ready to go. Google my god fellows going gone so she kind of looked at me like All right i don't know why anna relieve you you realize could probably as your career doesn't go well but i'm gonna go and we're gonna see how this works. So she goes to the premier again. There's no we didn't have these. We didn't have found by right like watch it and you literally had to wait 'til us weekly magazine came out with the pictures a week later. So i'm like living like. Did i do a good job that you know whatever right so i get a phone call about a week later from her publicist that noel shore. Who still her publicist another woman. Who has changed my life. she said. Okay molly here's the situation. She's like we had three different premiers new york. La and london. We laid out. The pictures. Fiance is about to blow up k. Were dropping a new album dangerously in love the whole nine yards. She said she pointed to your picture. She said this is what i wanna look like. Go find out what that girls doing for the next year and i literally was like wait so if there's some words get the chills to tour with her for the year out. Yes we literally with. Yeah so i literally just said okay. Everybody sorry. this is where i'm going to go. We did album covers. We did videos. We'd all of it anyway fell. The point of that story is obviously when you have someone like beyond say you don't need to put a lot of makeup on her number two at most importantly is trust. Your whisper trust your gut because perhaps had i done.

"Retail the real truth about this vague shit. And today my fabulous. Gorge watt co host is miss. Meli ron cal. She is the founder of molly beauty. She is a celebrity makeup artist. She's the queen of qvc. And if she's been my best friend and my head long time so actually have you only podcast together. Yay this is actually a perfect opportunity to say that this is this third time. We're trying to make this happen. But i love that. I love that. I love the fact that everybody looks at everything on the internet are here. They're under like oh so perfect. Oh it's so easy guys. This is the third time we're trying this and you know and it's like i've been upstairs downstairs or plugging in the air prize doing but it's so it's not always perfect. Life is not always perfect but when you get there man it's good it is but you know what i want to say on that to one of the things that i love love about you. is your positive attitude so you just are spreading getting the chills to singing about it you you. You're your instagram. Feed is always so positive. I remember when. I met you in the hallway of qvc. I'd i started there and here is molly. You're like this tiny little thing but just so much. your aura. is john muir mess and just gorgeous big hug. And you're like welcome to the fan fan. I immediately went and bought your book and love acted. I was like i need to know everything about this beautiful women at one of the things. That always stuck with me is that you said you get up every morning and from your bathroom to your bed you thank you. Thank you thank you thank. You're just really an example. Somebody who grounds themselves ingratitude. I love that. Thank you thank you. It is really at the end of the day i apologize. If you hear that hap- so not said what we'll get back to the gratitude but basically so we have ten pets in this house and the newest edition. I'm just gonna tell you this is all my Hold on one second. Come here so are eleven year old. She said we have two pit bulls. We have two big giant pit bulls who are like our babies and then we have rabbits and guinea pigs and all that will be gone are eleven year old. She says to me Mommy i want to adopt senior dogs so that they can die with dignity in are home instead of dying in a shelter so needless say after. We cried at the kitchen table. We then drove to the history. And the aroun- jackson at your eleven year old daughter. God bless you are doing something really really. What a beautiful soul that is you sell. Dacheng is fifteen and a half blind deaf. Heart disease hockey. The i had to look down because he was called off at my feet. So mercer okay. How beautiful even though. I'm all but i will tell you this right now you go and please. Don't do anything crazy. Thank you ought to stay alive through the rest of the gas. Don't to die very ambush. please would not be. That would not be good but the thing. That's so funny about it and again speaking of gratitude speaking of like just love in general is the minute we brought him home. Something changed in him at first he was like where am i. What's going on. Like i was in this cage. And now there's all these people in dogs and blah blah blah and he kinda like in the past. Few weeks has thank you. I'm kind of live that like okay. No worries just come on high. Come say hi to ever since. You're here i love this. It's like it's a family affair. recognize him. I know you. Because i follow you. Follow you to on instagram. And you're adorable. My husband is is. We have a marriage like yours. So thank you for that. Yeah yeah that's it. That's sort of yeah instead of terrorists it exactly. He's he's fine. I was just telling her about this kuku and how much power love pass the minute. We brought him home at first he was like okay. And could you not honey two days later. He's running around the back yard he's jumping. He's got a new on life being levin a family right to three months in a shelter freaked out probably fifteen years. Well now. he's he's here and now he's got a little the little puppy lottery in your house. You know it's funny. I had a cat You got a cat luxury. Outer when i was You know nine years old. I went to the shelter and there was this black cat and i loved it and they were like this cat. We call them hissar because it is just a nasty nasty cat. And when we brought it home the cat's name ended up being her. Because maybe i was younger that maybe it was like seven because it was just the love and then it i guess. She went from being a hissar to a horror because she was loved. Yeah that's it and love just makes you any form right self. Love love from other people love from pets love from the universe. It just makes you feel good young makes you glow and it makes you look prettier. And it makes you feel healthier. And that's why you know we're so passionate about having pets about having You know living with gratitude yet and so two year point. That is exactly what i do. The first words that come out of my mouth every day are for me. I say thank you lord and and and but it can be anything. Thank you universe. Thank you mother nature. Thank you as long as you're saying. Thank you the only way you can go from. There is just getting more to be thankful for and you know. Yeah i have to say that to you know from the outside looking in it. Seems like you especially have a lot to be thankful for. You've got this beautiful family. You've got a houseful of pets but you also have this incredible career you know. Now you've got this makeup empire. I'm actually wearing the shouted sticks today and love them. And i wanna tongue but can you tell us a little bit about how how you got here. A little bit about your history. Okay so yes it is. I'll give you the cliff's notes version. Because i am one hundred and fifty years old and i had a whole bunch of couriers ovens You know because this is the thing and from one extra girl talking to another extra girl. As i'm sitting here. Guys looking amber in her Have pink so-called top with her sparkly red glitter starbucks cup and her red nails and her pink per and the earrings the whole thing. This is the. Here's one thing i do want to say before i get into that. We need to stop faulting women for living there. Extra nest police their fierceness. Okay this is the thing that drives me crazy ivan feeling. You've always been a little extra. I've always been a little extra and it's like we gotta get out of that time. Remember when you would like being like. I don't know high school or even in your twenties and some grow would walk in and she'd be like in pink with her heels in and thing and some of the girls would be like yes queen. Thank.

So it's an honor. Thank yo i gotta tell you. This is an amazing piece of work. You should be extremely proud of yourself for this. I don't need to tell you that. But i mean just from a reader. Just read this. And i've read it and i told you in the prerecording i got this. You guys fed ex this to me monday. I think got it. And i got it last night so i read it nine pm here. It is the next day. I finished it at one pm. Amazing book i just i love it. It made look. I'll be honest with you. It made me cry. I've never cried in book. it made me cry. Maybe he never cried. Okay not in a not in a book like this. I mean maybe in a fictional book. Or something yeah. It's an amazing story. Thank you so much. It's and you know it's been a journey. I think everyone of us has has a story. And i think you know just all of us are kind of on this journey. I think of. I mean for me. It's really it's really you know. So many people think oh. Is this a book about how you went from. Denny's waitress to leading a business. A billion dollar businesses like that's part of it but it's really a story of a girl who went from not believing herself to believing ourself and like not trusting myself to list like to learning how to hear my own gut instinct and learning how to trust it And just learning how to break through all that self doubt that. Hold us back so often and why i wrote. It is really like for a lot of years. I would get these. Dm's on instagram. Where people say. Oh i saw your your story Like hat like was it. Like did you just get lucky. Or because all that's out there is kinda like the headlines. And i realized oh if i don't share if i never share the real story behind the story like how it all happened years and years of rejection opposition and all those things than it's like so many other people out there that maybe are trying to launch their own dream or maybe they're trying to be a better leader or whatever it might be are gonna feel alone and their struggles if they're just reading like the highlight reel of people's success is online and so this is the first time ever but i just i took everything and kinda like throughout that filter out the window and just poured everything i had every personal and professional life lesson i've ever learned and my hope is just. It's absurd for anyone else out there who's really on that journey of like breaking through that self-doubt in and an on that journey to becoming the person they're created a bi. No i mean it's it's it's it's a prescription boards a recipe that you've kind of attacked life with anyway. What thing that's really kind of. Come out of this show and all these conversations when people ask me well. What are the biggest lessons that you've learned from talking to all these people and your book hits all of these these points that you know the prescription that is needed so that is in such lacking in everywhere we look. Is this authenticity. This transparency there's vulnerability which lends itself yet to be courageous. If you're gonna do those things because we suck adams human beings you know what we're bombarded with from our limiting beliefs are doubts. The pop culture the the social media now that just even feeds on that. I mean everybody deals with this head trash this limiting beliefs. These self doubt. It's a constant battle. You still battle with the today. I it with everybody that had on. The show has said that. And that's been a big moment for me on this show and a relief a sense of relief and reading. Your book is kind of the same feeling. That god is when you read it and because you're so authentic you're so transparent you're so vulnerable in this book and you have been in your whole. That's why you've been so successful and entrepreneur in in your brandon's accessible because of those things what do you think when you hear me say that that authenticity transparency vulnerably. That's the currency that's needed right. It is and it's scary for so many of us. I think that you know you look at so many of the studies out there that show. How like it's impossible to have a real human connection if you show up as your representative who you think people want you to be in the and the only real way to have a human connection as show like only parts parts the messy parts but a lot of people who know that awesome miss that connection of like our relationship with our customers also needs to be an authentic one our relationship with our teams and our employees also needs to be an authentic one and we ended up putting so much pressure on ourselves right social media your point to that too but we think all i a leader acts this way or we learn these things and we end up showing up is our own representative and then you know what i've learned and i don't wanna like jump too far ahead give anything up because there's so many crazy stories in the spot but wanted the leadership lessons i would say and life lessons frankly that i after which is three years of rejection a crazy story we finally got one shot on qvc. I can talk about only only if you want to but but you know being on. Kabc for united about a thousand shows live myself. And so i've met tens of thousands of entrepreneurs and brand founders and senior executives. That will go on the television for their company. And it's like all the years when i look back at. What is the commonality between the people that made it and those didn't because most people in the space they they get one shot on air and they never come back because they don't have the sales goal or maybe they they come back twice or three and then they're gone so i've seen thousands of people leave and then like what's the commonality between the ones that lasts and literally. It's not who's smarter. It's not who's more qualified or more accomplished. The people that will lasted were the ones that were the same off air in the green room as they were on here for better or worse like some were wild and crazy in quirky in somewhere very conservative and quiet and like but they were the same and it's because that live on air to one hundred million homes you can't fake authenticity and the only way for customers to connect as when you show up as you you fully are in the thing that one of the things i talk about in the book is In believe it is this lesson. I learn which is that like authenticity. Alone doesn't guarantee success in authenticity. Guaranty's failure

"Yeah no asserting. Best huge when you've been working with i mean it's interesting. Qvc south and and obviously working with influencers they influenced. Everyone is interesting to me. Because it makes so much sense. And i hear people crushing it like micro influencers strategies right. Were like hey you get a bunch of these micro influencers like it all adds up. There's a long tail effect. Do you guys have you use that strategy. Do you go for the bigger named influencers from a promotional not like to partner with but in a promotional standpoint or do you do both or small. We were actually launching. Masterpass inside of this is actually trademark. The tornado in cluster. Nice or if you if you have a two million three million. Five million person Influencer the odds are that that person's doing their own things you're not gonna actually talked to them or their brands slut in. So they have no sales capability in with instagram dropping. Reach and things like that. You're not getting it. Used to be a person with a million followers. Swipe up we made a hundred run out the swipes up your lucky to make ten k. You did you're like wow and you paid them more than ten k. So like you're kind of your brocchi your even your that. Now if you go into like the nanon's florence serves that someone with like ten to up to one hundred thousand followers. These people have community in these people have like these people are being followed. Because they're the people that are following them really love him. They trust them. They're out there whoring themselves out. They don't have seventeen hundred different offers. they really only sell things they believe. In in so those people at scale create more for use of. What are the things we do. Is we create like a fake viral campaign. We have a huge network of pages on on instagram. So we'll pay some pages to make a drop at the same time that these influencers all make the drop at the same time..

"I'm curious. What are your ambitions with view view. Sorta it is a live video. Commerce company so sort of focusing on a lot of these companies are doing sort of like. Qvc from home kind of thing. We've actually sort of. It's turned into more of a say in art form so it's a live video platform so think twitch or something like that and trying to make it much more than gaming so you know my my ambition that people can connect around their interests around the world and feel like they are sharing something together even though their remote is the world becomes increasingly separated and i really want to sort of build a positive feeling. Yeah glue is. The word used to bring people together about the things that they love. And so that's what. I'm trying to do with view it's video streaming which is a the wild west to be honest partly cargo cult. I could talk about that for a long time. But on the other side of the product rate video streaming is coming in the maturation business rules around logging in or comments or test. I wanted to to make those as you know. The the risks should be on the things that are different about your business or your technology so obviously the rails app is not handling the video streaming. Because that's not what it's focused on. That's not one of the powers of rails but everything else all the business logic all the rules and moderation and all that all those things you have to build in with the platform. That's that's where. I think rails once again really shines. So what does the tech stack look like. So it's rails for the web sort of layer using stimulus. Which i sort of i've been doing a lot of people react for many years now and decided to give stimulus to try and have definitely more. I've really enjoyed it but it it is. It does have its quirks. I guess would say and you know really what we're trying to do is use. The power of web. Ep is so there's been an this. Were stimulus comes in. One of the strengths is that like react. Tends to have the opinion that it wants to isolate you from the browser as much as possible. Like even when you're writing. Html you're not writing html you're writing a representation of different down that gets you know computed and dipped in kind of trying to isolate you from from the browser. And i think it's interesting about stimulus and specifically take on. This stuff has been. The browser has good stuff in it and he kind of missed that whole train. Which i don't think this really good but coming out the other side like i think these things all come in swings almost like of fads. I usually browser no the browsers. Great come back to it. And i think we're definitely gonna swing back. I think i've been discovering just how much you can do in the browser web amazing audio context and you know even css these days horrible anymore or still a little bit. But you know it's much better than it's been in the past. I think there's just you know just even the video like web. Sorry the power of web components. The video tags and i just indian is filled with so many presents that the w3c's been regular for years and browser vendors have been working on all pretty stable. And if you if you want to target the ninety seven percents browsers that support all these things and you don't care about the three percent as much. There's just so much cool stuff to do there so honestly the stack is rails with post grads pretty straightforward these days. We're using a service called mucks to help with the actual video pipeline itself and then mostly stimulus controllers and a whole lot of cool stuff going in the browser.

Small businesses had to quickly adapt. Can you tell us some of the top trends you've seen in the evolution of e commerce and online retail experiences this year. I think we're also really interested in what product line. Shoppers are buying online things that normally people would have gone to brick and mortar retailers. But they're now buying online warren of the biggest thing that we've of course seen is a shift to digital and in particular. I mean ebays been really great about being ahead of that curve and enabling a lot of the small local merchants with up and coming and a lot of the programs that have really been about supporting those local businesses because those companies have been the hardest hit and need to pivot the hardest and the fastest some of that of course is digital. Some of it is just enabling things like curbside pickup wherever possible digital payments. If you happen to have that physical infrastructure those are important. And that's been a big change in a big shift and i think that that's reflected in some of that cyber five data that we saw earlier is that the marketplaces have gained disproportionately. I think part of that has been because the consumer expects choice and they do expect the selection when they can't find it elsewhere. That's what's top of mind. It's been top of mind for a while and it's certainly top of mind during the pandemic as well as far as categories are concerned electronics. And some of those categories about keeping families busy other categories. That i would say that. We're seeing certainly anything that supports warmth. Fleece is doing very well right now. We're seeing socks and pj's and anything that is about comfort like blankets doing well. Anything that's outdoor. do it yourself home. We're still seeing things like heat. Lamps and fire pits being sold out and we still see huge uptake on anything. That's workout related. So exercise related. You know leggings at home exercise equipment. So from a subcategory standpoint. Those are some of the small trance to interesting. I know i bought a table. Top patio heater this year. Myself good for you. Hopefully you got it ahead of the sellouts. I did never mind the toilet paper. Bring us heaters rate right so this year there has been really noticeable change in shopper behavior. Let's talk about some of those behavioral changes like mobile payments or shopping or are people at home with their desktops and shopping more on desktop. Maybe they're on their phones. Tell us more about that. Yeah we see a tremendous amount of multi device usage within households. So what that means is you will have like you know the people who are on their zoom calls like shopping on the side you know. But they're not shopping necessarily on the desktop. It's on an ipad or it's on a on a phone on the side so there's definitely a lot of pre shopping a lot of inventory checking or a lot of investigating who they're going to kind of consider in the course of that transaction that's definitely A big part of that experience now see just want to be conscious as a seller of things like making sure that the imagery that you portray is going to be reflected well on different device sizes and we are seeing a lot of Video customer service calls to so just responding quickly to questions that consumers may have. That's an expectation of customers. We've seen video certainly provide Greater boosts to conversion whenever we see that offered it's essentially an extension of imagery so and we know that the more images you share that more likely that there is to be a sale ultimately that's a great reminder and it certainly reflects what we see here at ebay as well for holiday for many people. It's actually about those post holiday sales that they get excited about whether you're a buyer seller that last week of the year can be a big deal. Can you tell us what to anticipate this year with those post holiday sales and what to look forward to i think the pandemic essentially forced a lot of companies to cut their orders pretty early. And they didn't go back and revisit cancellations and what you had as a result is even through thanksgiving weekend you add less compelling offers like to merchant than you did in the past. It was completely common in the past that you would on a cyber monday. Have forty percent off of everything on a website plus free shipping and that was far less common. This year was more likely that you would have thirty percent off of select items with a shipping threshold. It just the richness of those offers was substantially less than in years past and part of the reason for that is that there just wasn't as much inventory that retailers had to discount. And they're trying to make that inventory that they have last as long as possible. What that potentially means is that there's not going to be as much in the way of sales post-holiday and that could be to the advantage of ebay sellers and the reason for that is that if there's less competition out there that's a good thing for you because you would be able to jump on the consumers that are expecting sales or offers and they're not finding them you wanna be able to take advantage of that if possible. I mean people will buy after christmas if there are sales it's entirely promotional driven like that's sort of the big driver of that between christmas and new year's rush whether it's e commerce or in stores it's what's on sale. What can i get. That didn't get sold already. That i may be able to take advantage of and if there isn't going to be much of that and we don't expect as much this year if you have anything access you know take advantage of that timeframe promoted you know in really kind of jump on anything you can get your hands on right. It's a good time to move some of that inventory. That's been hanging around for a lot of the year. So i hear that online shopping and cova shopping habits are likely to continue post pandemic in throughout the year. What are those predictions. You're looking for in the year to come. The single biggest challenge i think is just the amount of internet research that has been happening and certainly the pandemic has accelerated in every product category. And where that makes a difference for sellers is that your ability to show up and be present when consumers are in that search process because if their first touch point is digital you know in in the past maybe their first touch point was walmart stores. It just gives you more of an opportunity to be apparent in the course of that chopping funnel for all kinds of different categories that you may not have been considered for in the past. So that's definitely just something that's a subtle change but it's an important one because it gives small merchants so much more opportunity than what they had in the past. We also expect to see more distributed commerce. It's been a term that's been around for a long time but the idea of you know. Kind of completing transactions on social networks or completing transactions offer merchants site or enabling. Things like shop -able video that will be ways for emergent to connect directly to their audience. Like these are all things that we expect to continue to see. They have a tremendous amount of potential. I think a lot of the playbook in the us is still being shaped informed but we've known for decades that businesses like qvc nhl. San are incredibly powerful and incredibly lucrative and they resonate with so many people. There issues have always been that. You know it's a medium which is highly dependent on television. Adjacency is in how low the channel number was what they were next to so people would just happen to stumble upon up there can network and stop and watch it. And what's different in really powerful about chargeable video is there's a live component which takes elements of that experience. But there's also the ability to have an on demand experience to and and that expands the universe of of who can be exposed to and who can be seduced by kind of great selling so that's really some of the the big change that we expect through twenty twenty one especially if there is less of an opportunity to sell in the physical store. There's not the ability to touch and feel merchandise physical environment if we have more lockdowns In the coming months hopefully we won't because we'll be able to get vaccines but if things even get harder or in the next few months something to offset that can be more video selling interesting.

Live Streaming Ecommerce: the new way to sell online
"How about live streaming shopping then the verge is Carmen has an article about how livestream shopping has become huge in China and US companies are trying to catch it on here as well. Amazon. Launched live for influencers in July instagram facebook launched live shopping features in August Google their own. That's kind of on demand. It's not live the idea with these is to make a more modern shopping channel experience with influencers as the hosts, hundreds of millions of people tuned into shopping livestream. June in China it's just keeps going up and up. Kim Kardashian partnered with Chinese influence on one of these streams in China and sold fifteen thousand bottles of perfume like that. During an appearance the numbers are rising in the US now to forty thousand people watched Youtuber Nikita dragoons live shopping event on instagram five thousand items were added to shopping carts during the segment, all her branded products. So she was selling her own stuff direct to you. The people hosting live shopping streams already have dedicated fan bases that see them as friends. So the difference with QVC is with QBC. You got to know the hosts on QVC if you watched it a lot, you might kind of know the celebrity that shows up but these are folks were you feel like if you're in the influencers audience if you watch their youtube channel, you subscribe to them on Instagram you follow their tick talks you feel like you know them. So when they show up, it's not a stranger or a celebrity. It's a friend telling you like, Hey, this beauty product works great. Check it out. Also interactivities can you can you can take calls on QVC and they do that but this is live chat people who are savvy about talking to a chat room while they're doing the livestream, for instance, facebook and their Best Practices encourages folks to reply to everyone who DMZ comments according to Ashley's article on the verge. So this is one of those trends that keep an eye on. You're probably going to see this happening more and more, and it is a different spin on the old shopping channel idea. And also. It's a it's a it's a next step from what a lot of influencers are doing on their popular channels already. I actually sometimes there are people that I follow that I like and I trust I don't know that I would consider them friends but I like their content I would like to see something like this. In fact, I would like to experience this in a shopping stream type of way rather than be like Elizabeth Instagram Ad Oh? Yeah. They tagged at the end. Yeah. Okay. It's an ad. So I think that this is it. It makes a lot of sense sure there's going to be. People who are schilling things that they don't necessarily care about and that's just advertising general. But but yeah, that kind of fun. Let's hang out. Let's be interactive to me. This is not that different than watching somebody play a video game you're you're there and you're hanging out. Patrick on a scale of one to horrified how do you feel about this? Okay. So disclose your I actually was part of a set of a whole bunch of people who who did technology on Youtube or invited out to do a series of QVC type Um trials when Amazon was considering doing some while basically some programming like that it was really fascinating because one of the people there had been a term host with a certain high profile comedian on QVC and one talking to her about some of this is one of most fascinating conversations that I've ever had because they have a huge amount of control and it's all about kind of generating a certain amount of money permitted. Or second or however the metrics running. So on one hand, this makes perfect sense to me and it's it's if you're an influence, you're looking for revenue streams. This makes perfect sense. I'm kind of curious at what point they figure out how to generate more money permitted on this because at this point, it seems like it's super experimental and then Amazon will do Amazon does and they will figure out a way to turn it into this giant money generating beast of joy. But you know I think if you're an influence and you can get involved with this and you can pick up commissions why wouldn't you? Also I'm I'm curious why we're seeing Google's experimental arm put a on demand version out and according to this verge article at least one person didn't find that it that it worked very well why aren't they doing live shopping on Youtube? Why isn't that like a product that they've launched a little surprised? Maybe it's in the works in it'll come out to.

Culture Plating vs DNA Testing for Microorganisms in Cannabis w/ Kyle Boyar (From BTS #29)
"I'll start with the ancient technology which is plaguing It's been around for some time, and basically this is where you take your sample. You add some sort of. Growth medium right DPW TRIPTYCH soy broth. Yeah Classic Classic growth mediums basically. You put that in with your sample. Typically a one gram sample. It really just depends on what state you're in other industries use lot larger sample sizes. Something like you know anywhere from five twenty five grams, or even upwards of fifty grams really just depends on what you're testing right, but since candidates is a very precious commodity. People don't want to give up their. You Know Ultra high quality stuff more than a gram, so that's typically what we see out there in the marketplace. But, basically you're, you're homogenising your sample. Usually the stomach or By hand massaging and then you're taking that and you're taking a small sub sample of that, and then pleading it as a basically placing that inaugurating the plate, and then you know streaking it or basically spreading it uniformly across the plate surface. And then you're incubating bat depending on what you're testing for, you may incubate it for you know. From Twenty five to twenty seven sees what's typically done for Aspergillus five seven days seven days type thing. But it's going to differ for every different microorganism that you're testing for and then you're basically taking whatever you dilute it at, so you're counting. The colony is on the plate, and then we'll play it by that dilution factor, and now you have a colony forming unit gram readout. That is typically your standard readout that you see in just about everywhere. I mean while QBC are is. Very commonly accepted now in the cannabis industry when it comes to things like total count tests, you do have to convert that seek value or cycle of quantitative will get into a bit more later, but you have to convert that value into something that is acceptable for regulators, which is that a few Graham Now plaguing. Good because it is only enumerated, what is actually viable within the sample, right? And so a lot of people aren't concerned about what's dead in a sample, or what was left over and so that is an advantage of planning a disadvantage of planning is that some of these things don't grow very well and culture It depends again. What type of mediums here using what types of Brasier using There's a number of factors that contribute to how well something cultures on a plate so I would say those are kind of like the high, A. The highpoints of pleading and the potential drawbacks of it but then there's molecular methods like Qpr. QVC are right, so this is quantitative polymerase chain reaction so for those of your listeners that are familiar with polymerase chain reaction. Now this is just monitoring that reaction in real time using different flora fours. And so you're basically typically QC are run is forty cycles You are looking at you know. How quickly does amplify so and then at the point at which crosses the threshold, so you set that threshold to remove any background, the point at which your QBC our signal crosses that threshold is what we call a cycle of quantitative, so that is the point at which. which it is crossing that threshold line and the actual cycle number so basically the earlier of a C Q, You have that means that the earlier or sorry. The the greater presence of your target there is because it's a amplifying quicker, whereas if it's amplifying later than that means you had less of your target, so that would be a higher cq. Value, right? And so I guess the disadvantage with QBC are is that you aren't just selectively? Amplifying is alive. You are getting everything DNA DNA. So you're going to amplify everything and some people push back and say well. Hey, isn't that to our detriment? You know. If you have a bunch of dead stuff on there well, why am I failing for dead stuff? That just doesn't make sense well a couple of things there right so in the context of things like Aspergillus or micro toxin producing. Well. If there's a bunch of that leftover well, that could be indicative that you have mycotoxin your sample now. Of course, many states have opted for mycotoxin testing things like apple. Toxins and ochre toxin. And so that that checks that box right, but still it's good to know and a lot of people have this misconception that because you're only. Oh, sorry, 'cause! You're amplifying all of these things, right? That you're gonNA fail more as a result, but actually we find that. At least in my experience, it was the opposite. And I think the reasoning for that is. and. I guess this is another drawback of planning that I forgot to mention in. This is a perfect tie-in. Well, there's a lack of selectivity. Typically when you're planning something. You're using right selective growth media. That are supposed to foster the growth of a particular class of microbial contaminants now. There's grows mediums. There's also antibiotics that are used for selection in this case, and as we all know, antibiotics are being A. Microorganism, becoming more and more resistance, these things and just because you select for it, based on an antibiotic or some sort of growth medium doesn't necessarily mean that off target organism growth isn't going to happen so what? The the publications that medicinal! Of have done of showed is that there is a significant amount of Tara growth happening especially in the context of police mold plates. And depending on what state you're in typically limits around ten thousand CFU's program. But if you're getting off growth, you're counting dots that are actually not e- mold. You're counting oftentimes bacteria, and so this of course leads inflated accounts, more failures, and so people have this aversion to moving toward QVC are because they think that's going to happen. More frequently, but really it's the opposite because you're using targeted primers, you are selectively amplifying only for the class of organisms that you're looking for. You don't have the potential for off target growth in that case.

"Greg thank you for being here today and I've been wanted us for a long time. So thank you for being on kindred cast and you seem like you were getting a little bit tired and exhausted just hearing all these titles and responsibilities but imbedded within all of us is superior shareholder returns along the way across the portfolio definitely. You're proud of I think. That's why stills getting to sit in the chair by reference that we met during your three sixty networks days a long time ago when I used to cover the bonds and ran that company which was in fiber company generally speaking like the old days but even with Microsoft. I remember when you made the investment in comcast in one thousand nine hundred seven which was a billion dollar investment in the cable business. You were sort of the first to bring the technology industry together with the media industry and the cable industry in that respect a very long time ago. When I was at Microsoft we were very interested. In what the cable industry was doing to build out high speed data build out the high speed Internet Bill Gates and I spent a bunch of time with a lot of people in the cable. Business including Brian Roberts comcast including John Malone thrilling. When I first met him back in ninety three we tried to sell them set top boxes. We tried to drive a lot of things. We were very instant what they were doing with at home. Which was the primary vehicle. Another one road runner which are the primary consortium vehicles to build up that high speed data and eventually Ryan Roberts is the one I said. Look if you want to help us. You should put money and all the cable companies but the only one who really stepped up and wanted our money. Initially we did a bunch more Brian. So then we ended up buying seven percent of comcast and I was on observer on the board so that was my first exposure to cable. Yeah it was a real catalyst. I remember for evaluation starting to rise again people's concerns being alleviated about what the future of cable could be seen as perpetual petrol theme right when you have these traditional media businesses that are always count out in the age of Technology and innovation disruption. And all of a sudden you have real endorsement and it sustains itself and brought Bannon's everything else obviously there are examples that went the other way like newspapers and other things you know. We were lucky twice or I've been lucky twice to catch the right cycle. We did very well in that comcast investment road at up on the growth of high speed data. And then really again when we did charter in two thousand thirteen sort of caught if not a bottom of near bottom on the industry's accelerated since yeah. Is that the way that you think about? Investing and think about buying companies is that you're somewhat countercyclical because obviously given your perch and your history in the industry you could have expertise in any number of areas. So how do you prioritize it? What do you think about? What drives your successes your approach? I wish we were that systematic or organized. Yeah you definitely have to have a thesis and oftentimes. It's gotTa be tacking against conventional wisdom because conventional wisdom gets valued to the Max. And if you're following along that's a really hard place to be. It may work for a while and it kind of momentum play but it's hard to sustain so finding things are out of favor is certainly a good place to start and doesn't mean it'll nestle get back into favor but it's a good place to look. I can also speak to. The other side doesn't matter how clever you were in emerging telecom in the early two thousands when I was running sixty when the capital goes away and when the trend blows up on you you're GONNA have a lot of problems all the emerging telecom companies. But when you think about the career and it is a unique path right. And obviously we'll get to the liberty part of your career now but when you think back at your evolution as an executive and as an investor what do you point to to be sort of like those key moments where you've got to be really good at your craft and obviously it's a humbling experience every single day. But how do you think back at your path and wise unique and differentiated versus others again? I'm not sure there's a systematic thing. I've tried to keep my doors open but I know I've also gone just incredibly lucky to be at Microsoft of the right time and place to move. When I was really from Dillon Reed over to CITICORP venture capital eventually get out to Seattle to get an John Malone and for him decide. I was the right person to come here where there was a lot of things that were available to fix. Initially we got some early wins and to have the perch so Microsoft needed my skill set at the time. They really didn't have it. Liberty could use my skill set but I could have end up someplace where a lot of smart people could have filled that role or I could have been someplace where your skill set wasn't necessarily so highly valued so there's a lot of selling yourself short by saying it's all lack. I look back at my business school class. A lot of smart men and women smarter than I am or accomplished who didn't necessarily ended up. Lisa metrics having same mobile success some degree. That's the luck of. Where do they end up? Where did I end up? What was needed at the time when we ended up at that spot right? Well let's talk about how you got the liberty then so Dr John Malone needed a CEO of liberty media. How did that come about? And what came to be where it was attractive to you? I'd known John. Since ninety three and he actually been on the board of three sixty networks investor and three six networks. I've lost all his money there. But he's still talk to me. He said I was good at generating tax losses in early two thousand five or mid two thousand five. I got a call from mutual friend of ours. Who said John Malone wants you to come liberty? Do you want to talk to and you. At Oracle the time Oracle. I only been three. I said sure like to talk to John. I mean I'd known him for twelve years. That Point Pete served on a board company Iran so I knew reasonably well. We'd actually talked about various ways we might work together so John Calls Me and says who could run liberty and I thought he was going to call about me. I said nothing comes right to mind. I think about some names so I called the mutual friend back and said well. He got me but he didn't want my name. He was asking for other names so and the friend said he wants to. He wants. He's just playing with you. Then he called back and said you know maybe you'll be the guy that's pretty funny. Well played so will happen so I joined in November of two thousand five as I there was. I think a bunch of relatively low hanging fruit of things to fix clean up and you know in any job. It's always get some early wins because it gives you credibility to make bigger bets. Yeah did you have a an understanding with John when he became? Ceo of how you both would divide the responsibilities already just all in it together. You were giving us a lot more credit than I think. The only thing I remember John Offer. Let me send something like the future is what you make it or something like that. It was a pretty open canvas and if you look nobody would have predicted enormous change when I joined in five today. What liberty looks like and nobody would predicted where we would go right now in the John. Ri- nobody but was there a mandate was there a vision or an objective or again with more of a two smart people getting together and try and make the right investments. Look I think John Appreciate? I'd come out of the technology side and had some familiarity with that in. Oh five if you WANNA look like a relatively. Technically strong person. Coming out of Microsoft helped compared to being traditional media players. I certainly wouldn't put myself up as a technology expert on a relative basis. That was helped. Yeah we'll plus you understood. I feel like capital structure and CFO like dynamics which would help with tax and shareholder value. And not just strategic deal making. When I was at Microsoft we did all these Put ones we were buying our stock back and we were selling against it and it was sort of a we knew we had big tailwind that we made up a bunch of money on this porn. And it's because it's in your own stock it's tax free. John loved that it was fascinated with that so Chinese doughy say the put warrant guy or something like that he was always happy because that's John Malone kind of play. Yeah well how do we think about liberty media because from the outside looking in just taking a eagle in the sky perspective for a second is unclear whether liberty media is a public private equity firm? That just happens to invest in media assets or Obscene Media Operating Company or to leveraged bet on the industry what is Liberty Media and hatchery benchmark or is it just a unique animal altogether book. I think you could say it's all three of those things in various times. It's malted when I first got here. We really owned very few assets in total on. Qvc was the only one we have any scale. We had a bunch of minority positions. And we've actually swapped for control or more influential positions. Barwane more positions over time. We'd like to think we try to do it. In this parts of the industry with our history as a company with John's vision John's expertise and contacts. We've had some insights into perhaps where we thought things would do. Better and where we thought we'd get worse and been able to trade our way out of those hopefully not inefficient or trade. Are we in to the good ones? And so that's been somewhat of a bet on the best parts of media. We'd like to think from where we could actually make progress. You'd love to be some of these places but you can't get in any smart way so it's not like it's an obvious bad to buy the stock but we've tried to promote the thing to a more operating assets being happy also being places where we have a influential position but on the right side of where the trends are

then all the other groups would be down at least twenty percent twenty six percent just got a stupid when you know you're in a stock and is going down and you said I better get out because going up whether wanted you just turn around stay the same stock we did so Pasaje my member stay in and let's put our position and now we bought a June seventeenth we're up twenty seven percent already in posh so when it went down we mitigate any losses by being short we had a twenty six percent gain then we turn around we bought it back in out of twenty seven percent so what you have to flip from start to stop that stupid let's talk about go all these guys were little late though aren't they they're talking about you should be looking a silver gold now what do you not should not get we bought in June
