Kevin Roberts: How Biden’s Weakness Has Further Emboldened China

"We could fill every minute of every hour on conservative talk radio, the whole day of Salem with a discussion of the disasters that are occurring under the Biden administration. You have co authored a piece with Rand Paul on the economics of it. Let's talk about your latest piece for Fox News. Biden's weakness in Ukraine, Russia conflict has only further emboldened and China in a new kind of war. So here's the real buried lead in these stories. When he stumbles when he goes off prompter and demands regime change or says we're going to use chemical weapons against Russia or when he eats before the privates of eaten in the dining facility, which is against all protocol for commander or a commander in chief especially. Or when he just makes statements like, yeah guys in front of the 82nd airborne, you're gonna see soon in Ukraine what the conditions are like. People listen to that in places like Beijing and Pyongyang in Tehran. So there are consequences to this senility or lack of statecraft, well beyond the U.S. borders. Oh, completely. And look, with all the respect I can muster, Joe Biden's been a bumbling buffoon for 50 years. Facts. And I lament that there might be some senility that's setting in. He's the exact same age as my dad. If it were my dad exhibiting those characteristics, I would say you got to leave public life. But the larger point is the one that you make said. And it is, if you take the ridiculous and tragic withdrawal from Afghanistan, if you get the back foot in nature by which the Biden administration's responded to Putin's aggression, if you take the fact that we're not even strong in our rhetoric when it comes to what the Chinese communists are doing toward Taiwan, all the while we're negotiating and Iran nuclear deal and an oil and gas agreement with Venezuela. Why in the hell, if you're one of these thugs, would you sit around and say the United States isn't a country I could take advantage of. I never thought I would say that in my entire lifetime. And it used to be that American strength, American peace food strength, was neither a Democrat nor a Republican thing. But this president is making it very partisan, and the combination of his incompetence, the combination of that with, I guess, his senility and really bad advisers who don't know anything about the world practically has created the weakest strategic position that the United States has had since our founding.

Let's go through, I think you're right. We'll just quickly summarize that. Rapid decapitation take Kyiv in install your puppet regime maybe one or two other cities and then take over the Ukraine. What happens next? And talk to us about the next three years of Biden or calcular or whoever is this going to be a domino effect that next it's Taiwan, then it's Pyongyang taking action against Japan. What is kennel K's war college predictions? Well, look, I think it's easier to ask yourself, what is a good strategic and tactical reason for the Chinese not to strike a Taiwan within the next three years? What is the thing that would stop them? American American forces are weaker than a year ago because one of our ships went a lot went offline because one of the sailor allegedly set it on fire and the sailors didn't know how to put out a fire. I would give you odds that they were a 100% caught up in their trans awareness training, though their firefighting training was apparently deficient. But what would stop you if you were G you have seen Americans? Nothing. Nothing. You think the Germans are going to suddenly stop trading with the Chinese? Maybe the Americans will for a little while. And then you know the walmarts and the costcos and everybody are going to start calling their senators. And saying, hey, I can't get my cheap garbage to sell to Americans.

North and South Korea Both Test Missiles as Tensions Rise

"Arising on the korean peninsula both north and south korea tested ballistic missiles. Today within hours of each other over the weekend. Pyongyang's said that it had successfully launched a long range cruise missile. Its first test in six months. Sumi terry is a senior fellow and the korea chair at the center for strategic and international studies. She joins us now from seoul. south korea. Explain the timing of these tests for both north and south korea. Why are we seeing this spike. In missile tests on the korean peninsula now the north koreans usually greet new. Us president with missile tests. What was unusual is not that they conducted these tests but they took this long to greet the biden administration in conducting these tests. I think that had to do with the fact that north korea had a very unusual year with a couvet pandemic and right now there have been going through severe food crisis in economic uncertainty trade with china dropped to about a fifth of normal levels this year. So i think they've been distracted and now they are to the regular policy apprenticeship tactics by conducting the test. I think they do probably want to return to talks with washington at some point because they badly need sanctions relief. What about the biden administration. I mean do you think they interpret these. Kind of tit for tat. Missile testing as sort of way into restart talks with north korea. Yes the biden administration and knows create team. They're they're used to this. There's a long pattern of north korea returning to provocations so for them. It took awhile for north korea to return to testing and again because these are show range ballistic missile tests better than intercontinental semester. Long range. i don't think will be alarmed. But they were seeing it as a sign. I think that. Kim wants to return to talks in again. And this is a move to pressure. Washington to sort of remind the biden administration saying. Hey we're still here. Don't ignore us. We're still working on. There are nuclear missile program.

"South korean president in has arrived in washington to hold talks with. Us president joe biden at the white house. Top of the agenda will be north korea and what to do about the nuclear threat from pyongyang joining me. Stephen barwick journalist insult and john everard the former. Uk ambassador to north korea Let's start with an overview of how serious that nuclear threat is at the moment. John i understand that north korean leader kim jong has slowed down missile testing. Yes he has slowed it down. But i think that's lost because he believes that he's already got to lucy where he wants. He's also Put a halt to nuclear testing. But that too is because he claims he's now cost a workable nuclear warhead. I think the The big our outstanding issue is submarine launched missiles He's tested a couple But i suspect that Particularly if he doesn't get his own way with the united states we may see some further testing of those and they of course overcome all the problems and long range lamb business because you can simply tell your submarine to within short-range missile range. You're talking and off you go right. Well joe biden's recently reviewed his policy on north korea. What we know about that. Frankly not a great deal The announcement talked about it calibrated and practical approach. Which of course means really very little. There's been almost no detail released over the policy review. And i suspect that is because partly President biden doesn't want to release that these until after he's spoken to president moon

US, Japan and South Korea Agree to Keep Up Pressure on North Korea

"Pressure is mounting on north korea to give up its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The united states south korea and japan have held high level security talks in which they reaffirmed their commitment to address the issue to concerted trilateral cooperation towards denuclearization. We'll examine this. I'm joined by. John everard former british ambassador to pyongyang. The warranty john. Thanks for coming on. What did the official communique after this meeting reveal. Well i think it revealed almost as much by what it didn't say by what it said. It was full of language about coordination about the maintenance of sanctions. On north korea. About the vital importance of north korea denuclearizing but notably the word. Diplomacy did not appear once in communicate. And you get the strong impression. That the communique really reflected the positions of the united states and japan who take a similar view of the north korean problem and that south korea must have been more than a little uncomfortable With the language that came out. "If North Korea, it's inconceivable that someone might go there without. Some basic knowledge of the of the country true will false. Really. Yeah. Of course. So so when you were there, what were besides like sight seeing and stuff like that what kind of activity is were like a popular thing over there where we're their sports whether to type of games that they do like what was kind of more of a fun activity style to the bars clubs or anything like that These days they don't really have any clubs. They used to be a a nightclub, the tourists in the basement of one hotel. But that closed maybe a decade ago but they do have. Restaurants, NBA's now until. Fairly recently, not many Baas were available tourists patchy. We've it's been one of our things to try and open up access to as many local bars as possible majority still not possible but some are, and we do encourage that because it's good for interaction with them. Some more kind of everyday people at say that these are only open in the afternoon there's not really a nightlife culture, their tool. So restaurants, spas, parks, sports, events, and also like big sports, events, International Games, football league, this kind of thing, plus trying to interact on a sporting level with people who play volleyball in parks or this kind of thing Yeah going to funfairs in gang. At least there are a couple of very modern funfairs that are open at night. Now, that's a good place to go and interact with people on kind of human level and probably the biggest way to. Get this interaction and do something fun is the Pyongyang. Marathon, which takes place every every April apart from this year, and that's something we worked for many many years to get tourist access to because it was only for locals and elite foreign athletes, and now for the last six or so years has been open to tours and that's now the single biggest Participation event that foreign tourists can take part in. The places institutionally set up to keep locals and visitors separate. And there's a deep an ongoing suspicion of anything foreign among the people that witches taught to them from above, and so we considered mission to try and fight against that. Show that there are commonalities even though there are great differences there are commonalities in that we are not dangerous and they are not dangerous and there's not really anything to be scared of. On a human level, but it's quite difficult as the place is not. Set up to allow that really yeah and I'm assuming you probably have had some interactions with the locals. As much as possible. Really. That's my big thing. I mean going there and having no interaction would be a big fail also. That's why we encourage people. go funfair in the evening go to a local bar go on a national holiday when people are more relaxed, you can go to somewhere like a park where a lot of locals gather for holidays..

"It's been suggested that Pyongyang may be drawing inspiration from its all time France Russia and China and their sophisticated propaganda operations in English Russia today and China global television network Sandra he again we can look at propaganda comes out of Russia China Venezuela and that propaganda is very slick that then becomes the concerns the more slick the more seductive the more light the type of media we see in democracies the more difficult it is for people to critique the message or to really understand what is the message North Korea may not have the cash or ability to achieve that level of sophistication as it's also been pointed out but experiments like this video series have provoked curiosity and alarm for their potential to provide a soft power boost to a country with a dire human rights record nonleague I was cross C. twig reporting let's stay with this story listening to us and joining us on the line is soo Kim she's a career expose an analyst at the rand corporation in Washington DC previously worked as a CIA intelligence officer analyzing north Korean propaganda and leadership styles what do you make of what you've just heard I agree completely with doctor for he added this is a you know if you if you observe the video and the way the the the stories are packaged and there's something that's quite unnatural about the way that that the the topics are presented for a person who doesn't watch north read me who's not familiar with the propaganda efforts it could just be seen as a casual north Korean says and just you know doing her vlogs shots and showing her daily life but there's there's an underlying message went within the videos at that show and I try to dispel the notion is about you know North Korea being and and no human rights violating country it's not normal you know the leaders repressive and and they're trying to dispel this by presenting a a young and quite attractive female who goes around the town who interviews people you know jogging on the streets to give this natural field but there's this stilted manner in which all of this is presented which you know to a north Korean experts I think they would they would see it and I would be able to catch on to it okay so no screen expense can see through it but I I wonder what the bigger picture is when you look at the tensions between the north and the south just in the last two or three days what is it that you think is is the substantial reason behind the escalation of tensions so as you know I mean the the the ongoing nuclear negotiations are the stalemate with our Washington has not really come to any resolution so North Korea could be signaling via soul that its its discontents that that it's one way to quote unquote signal diplomacy it's it's certainly a very weird way of signaling that I would think that this is a way for the Kim regime to continue to squeeze out to put a chokehold on the the moon administration as your where president moon when he became president he he sat North Korea policy and inter Korean peace and reconciliation **** platform and is is is personal and presidential legacy that has been pretty much destroyed you know figuratively and also literally as you saw yesterday at through the destruction of the of the inter Korean liaison office so it's sending a message to South Korea that's not happy and sending a message to merging and that he needs to do something perhaps something that is not really willing and ready to do right now which is probably going to be like a unilateral action taken the end of science or perhaps stoking Washington's further ire by giving north Korean economic relief okay so to put pressure on president moon but what about the the lack of the presence of of of the of the president of North Korea the the what about the consolidation of his system in terms of power that's an interesting question too so you know we we saw I think a couple weeks ago and image of Kim Jong un presiding over over party meeting we don't know if that was really can that that was a fabrication of paracrine propaganda what we do know is that it's you know given that given that the north Koreans position of of Kim yo Jong at the forefront of anti south and anti US rhetoric this is a way of if this is successful by north Korean definition it's a way for Kim yo Jong and a north Korean leadership and the regime to consolidate her legitimacy to show to the external and also the internal audience that she is pretty good of a leader perhaps a capable one who's able to deliver results in a more swifter and probably faster fashion on her brother okay we will leave it fast came joining us live from Washington thank you Facebook arguably the strongest media player in the world how's it Facebook's announced new measures intended to prevent foreign interference in November's US presidential election it was you remember widely criticized for failing to take such action for years ago when president trump was elected users will not be able to opt out of seeing political adverts and disclaimers will show who paid for such posts state media from other countries will be banned from advertising on the platform during the election the measures have been sent out by the company's head of global affairs and communications Nick Clegg the company the way that it operates its platform is just we are willing to possible doubles in two thousand sixty five speakers include over thirty five thousand people to keep its platform safe it now takes down and identify ways with some of the most sophisticated technology industry how these types of fake networks operate Nick Clegg joining us on the line now is Claude Monet's say former British member of the European Parliament to Chad the parliament's civil liberties justice and home affairs committee what do you make of today's announcement well the jury is really it's on whether Facebook have done enough to really make the next US elections safe I really fear that they haven't and the reason I feel that is that and I was one of the people who live ten to Facebook we had hearing after hearing both in the E. U. it also unites states to kind of understand just the sheer size and reach of Facebook particularly is it influenced elections is a massive advertising and personal detect other machine that they were just really never known and is in trouble and it's in trouble and that's why Nick Clegg said this is twenty sixteen they've been trying to make changes but they haven't really make changes to the essential business model which is the phenomenal thing it's an advertising machine but it gathers you're on my information and then of course censor political messages which were so effective that Donald trump of course has met with mark Zuckerberg and of course all of that kind of imagery is now playing ites and of course Facebook wants to.

"I'm Marco werman one hundred seventy four people are named in the Miller report and one of them joins us ahead this hour. Mary mcchord led the Russia investigation before Robert Mueller was appointed. The former Justice department official gives us her take on the questions of obstruction of Justice that much more still ahead on the world. All eyes on Washington today with the long anticipated release of a redacted version of the Muller report. But there is other news happening around the globe, including this announcement from North Korea the regime in Pyongyang said, it has successfully tested, a new tactical guided weapon Pyongyang also said it no longer wants to negotiate with secretary of state, Mike Pompeo. And it was also announced that leader Kim Jong UN will hold a summit with Vladimir Putin in Russia later this month sounds like the hat trick of provocations to me. Vip Narang is a nuclear policy expert at MIT let's start with this new weapon test. What was it most likely? So I don't think we know exactly what it was by all accounts. It seems like a tactical missile system probably something like an anti-tank guided missile system, it's probably not nuclear capable. I think this is probably in line with the last couple of days Kim Jong has been visiting his conventional military forces probably trying to boost morale check their readiness. And until we. We get a picture of more details. I think it's probably best to assume that it certainly wasn't a ballistic missile the United States did not detect a missile launch. So I think it's more of a conventional tactical system for the conventional forces. And I think it's part of a broader pattern about Kim Jong UN, I think increasing the right in his trying to signal. Remember what can happen if diplomacy falls apart? But in a lot of ways is calibrated because it's not a real significant provocation. What was the reaction from the Pentagon about this weapon test? Does that kind of give us any further? Details about what am I I haven't seen any major reaction. I think a lot of people are waiting see mode at the moment. The more concerning developments have probably been Kim Jong gun never said he would stop producing nuclear weapons or ballistic missiles, but we're seeing renewed activity at some of the facilities associated with their nuclear and ballistic missile program. And I think since Hanoi Kim Jong UN has signal look I can load my gun again. I haven't fired it yet. But just remember what can happen. If this whole process falls apart the Hanoi meeting with the less the less center. Then North Korea says they don't want to negotiate with Mike Pompeo anymore. Oh, yeah. Kim special says, so you know, I think in front of congress the other day secretary Pompeii referred to Kim Jong as a tyrant, and they reacted very badly to it was very interesting to me that they referred specifically to that in this press release, and they are basically saying look we can't associate with somebody who abuses, Kim Jong Jong-Un,.

"Yeah. Yes. North Korea does have an official YouTube channel, even though YouTube is technically banned so his Twitter and yet Alec tweets from inside North Korea. All the time with no censorship. His tweets are a rare window into daily life in Pyongyang which for his the Posad bastion of anti-capitalism seems to involve buying a lot of stuff like new flavors of knockoff Fanta or imitation. Cocoa puffs or video game app. Like this North Korean clone of guitar hero that you can play on your new government made smartphone, which sounds like this when you turn it on. Under Kim Jong UN North Korea is drifting farther from its Stalinist roots than ever before Kim Jung. He may talk about the quote, filthy winds of bourgeoisie reform, but he's also letting anyone with money shop and shop and shop. The consumer economy has has grown quite significantly in the past couple of years, and that's manifested itself in the form of new restaurants with everything from pizza conveyor belt sushi conveyor belt, hot pot restaurant. That's really good. It's not the North Korea. You're used to hearing about but there is a nuclear bomb connection last year, Kim Jong said, hey, now that we've got the bomb our nuclear sword of Justice. He calls it. We're going to focus on building our economy. He wants to make this country into developmental dictatorship. That's Andre Len cov a Russia born expert on North Korea. He also went to Kim Il-Sung University back in the eighties spoke to Lanka. Last year. And even then he was saying that North Korea is heading the way of China something like say China of the eighties and nineties which is developing economy using market capitalist model is a great deal of state intervention. Meaning you can start a business as long as it's linked to the government, and you share the prophets. Just don't get caught hoarding too much money for yourself. Corruption is kept at bay by off dictator at the top. Because if you still too much you can end up at a lead post swinging from lampposts he means yet that's the North Korea. We often hear about so what about the gulags and the poverty and the horrible oppression. Well, that's all still happening. But Kim Jong UN's changes are also creating a new rich traders shopkeepers people whose power comes from entrepreneurship not just being an officer in the regime as for Alec. He's been obsessed with North Korean society for years. That's why I started learning Korean in his early twenties. But he says he's not nearly leader for the North Korean state sickly going to a place, and and being there doesn't even know I support everything about the politics. There may visiting the United States doesn't mean that I support the war in Iraq or anything like that still. He does have good connections. You need those just to get into university.
