Dollar General Corporation Reports First Quarter 2020

"It's Thursday may twenty eighth welcome the Markets Lori. I'm Chris L. Joining me from Florida. The one and only Dan Klein good to see my friend. Hey there Chris. It is a rainy week here in Florida. It is a rainy day here in the Alex so so I feel for at least for today. Only we've got some retail news. We've got some employment news. We've got entertainment news but we're going to start with dollar general. First quarter. Profit and revenue came in higher than expected for Dollar General. Same store sales. Were up nearly twenty two percent that is not a Typo that is not me misspeaking. Same store sales for dollar general up nearly twenty two percent just a monster quarter yeah. These numbers are incredible. And there's a reason for dollar. General is a business that serves people that are under served. They're generally neighborhood stores so a lot of their customer base can walk to them or it's a very short drive so at a time or under stay at home order shelter in place. Whatever you WANNA call it. This is the only option for some people who are otherwise taking the bus to go to a grocery store so you could have predicted this beforehand. This is a company that sells everything. Groceries toilet paper. You know your iphone charger breaks. They'll have an iphone charger cleaning supplies. I'm sure they adjusted merchandise. They're probably selling a lot less pool noodles right now But that type of stuff so these are stores that had a really strong supply chain. They're clustered tightly together. They can often be a mile apart. That's how narrow the area they they serve and they are. Fips up seventy three percent and there's no reason to believe this won't continue as long as we're in this current situation. You know it's an interesting thing to think about because Gerry Philbin. Is the CEO of dollar tree. Dollar Tree is the parent company of both dollar tree and family dollar an interview he gave on. Cnbc this morning and that was one of the questions that was put to him was essentially okay a year from now. What kind of comps expecting from you? Because dollar tree also came OUT WITH THEIR FIRST QUARTER REPORT. Not exactly the same type of cops to that. They were putting up but family dollar stores. I think the same store sales growth was about fifteen and a half percent. So I think it's going to be a really interesting thing to watch with. Both of these businesses is. Can they keep this going? Because one of the things Philbin said was look in in the wake of the great recession. There were a lot of customers who were just sort of trying out for the first time and we kept a lot of them so I think it'll be interesting to see the other thing. He said that I feel like I took this as an encouraging sign for all. Us consumers so whether you own dollar tree or dollar general one of the things Philbin talked about was the supply chain. And how in April household essentials were selling out in two hours? And that's getting better. That's better now. He didn't say they were sort of at full capacity sort of normal capacity but he did say he thinks they will get there and several weeks and I just thought well you know. That's that's I don't know it's it's encouraging news to think that whether it's dollar general dollar tree family dollar target Walmart whatever. Your Neighborhood Grocery story is if they can start getting back up to capacity for just those basic household essentials. We're all going to breathe a little easier. Yeah Chris I'll speak a little been anecdotally for first thing that's also important to point out. That dollar general is not a dollar store. They are a low price retailer so that gives them a lot of optionality by not having a sort of artificial price cap limit. I will say that I've been Awad. Recently that is a privately held chain of gas stations and convenience stores and they've had toilet paper and paper towels and doesn't seem to be a major run on the my wife has been in target and Publix and while she couldn't get the brand she wanted we were able to get that we've been able to order hand sanitizer on Amazon. It's hand sanitizer of brand. I've never heard of that. I hope is made of what they say. It's made of but that said it smells like ten sanitizer so I think the supply chain is largely returning to normal. The other thing we all heard about was Oh my God. We're going to run out of meat. There's a huge shortage of meat. And I can say that you don't have every cut of meat.

Farmers are Swimming in Milk, but Can't Get it to Needy Food Banks

"Spilled milk. It has a whole new meaning. These days with restaurants schools and universities closed. Dairy farmers are swimming in millions of gallons of milk. They can no longer sell at the same time. Millions more Americans are hungry. Food banks across the country are seeing dramatic. Spikes in demand is unemployment swells. But they don't have enough food one of the products in short supply. You got it milk. Here's what the mismatch looks like spring the time of year when cows produce the most milk so they have more milk than usual and much less access to their regular customers and even though farmers are donating some milk food banks according to the New York Times they're still dumping about one and a half million gallons daily that's because farmers have been limited in their ability to give away enough milk to prevent the enormous waste time set but couldn't they just give away more milk. The short answer is no and the reason is two pronged for one. Food Banks. Don't have enough refrigerators or volunteers to handle too much milk at once. The other reason is that the cost of transporting and distributing milk is just too high for many farmers produce. Growers and cattle ranchers are having similar problems according to the New York Times not since the Great Depression has so much fresh food been destroyed but these are just the latest struggles facing the dairy industry as we reported in previous episodes. Dairy farmers were in trouble before Kobe. Nineteen in part because Americans. Just don't love cow's milk like we used to instead. We're increasingly turning to alternatives. Soy Almond Banana. Milk are changing. Tastes have real consequences. Just last November. The country's largest dairy supplier dean foods filed for bankruptcy now revenues. A fallen by half again for many dairy farmers. It's a distressing break in the supply chain farmers who can't sell enough milk are suffering and so are millions of people who don't have enough to eat. According to the nation's largest chain of food banks feeding America in normal times about thirty seven million Americans are considered to be food insecure. Now another seventeen million people recently unemployed also need help to avoid hunger at least eleven million of the hungrier children. According to the nonprofit it took several weeks but at least two big grocers are stepping in to help fix the supply chain mismatch last month. Publics began buying excess produce in milk and donating it to feeding America in. Its first two weeks. Public says it purchased and donated one hundred thousand gallons of milk and a million pounds of produce. The LAKELAND Florida grocery chain plans to continue the initiative released several weeks. According to CBS News public efforts are regional so far. The grocer is buying milk from dairy farmers. In the southeast and vegetables from Florida Growers Public's also donated two million dollars to feeding America. According to a statement Kroger America's largest grocery chain soon followed suit. On April Thirtieth Kroger said it would purchase two hundred thousand gallons of surplus milk and donate to feeding America and community food banks. Some might say both grocers can well afford to help in a normal year. Kroger's revenues are well above one hundred billion dollars with everyone. At Home Kroger's sales have surged. Revenues grew thirty percent in March. According to the Texas Observer Kroger's stock is currently close to its fifty two week high public to has been doing well with twenty nineteen sales of thirty eight billion dollars. The company says it sales grew this quarter by about sixteen percent over the same period a year ago with about two thirds of those sales due to all the home cooking. Americans are doing right now. The scale of America's milk problem for both farmers and the unemployed is so massive that the efforts to businesses alone are far from enough. That's something the federal government recently recognized. The Department of Agriculture will begin spending three hundred million dollars a month to buy surplus milk produce and meat from distributors and ship it to food banks. According to The New York Times some states to are getting in on the action for example New York is trying to help its own farmers deal with its huge pools of excess milk. It plans to give food banks twenty five million dollars to purchase products made from the milk. It's also working with food processors like Shabani Hood and Cabot to help them. Turn that milk into yogurt. Cheese and butter. The newspaper reported the fact that Kroger and Publix are redistributing surplus milk to food. Banks may be laudable but the quantities of no faith committed to purchase now to a drop in the bucket victims white question now is whether other businesses step up to help farmers and the hungry

Are the lockdowns working?

"Governments will be wary. That lockdowns may prove to be like wolves in rather be in being rather rather easier to stop than stop. But what do the scientists think? Well he is one on joined once again by monocle. Twentyfold Health and science correspondent. Dr Chris Smith Regular listeners will know that Chris spends his busy days working as a virologist at Cambridge University in Chris. First of all. Is it possible at all? I know this might be a bit of A. How long is a piece of string question but possible to quantify what difference the lockdowns have made? We think that they've made us turn the corner. Andrew as in when you model what this was doing certainly in the UK and other countries in terms of the growth of the pandemic and the number of cases it was growing exponentially and quite quickly. We saw the numbers of cases growing level and off and then admissions to hospital leveling off and then the number of people losing their lives leveling offer now beginning to to go down so this is certainly this intervention broken the chain of transmission or at least made it run through trickle rather than down a nice drag strip so it's definitely putting an obstacle in the way of the spread of the virus In terms of how long it's GonNa take for the peak to drop down get out of the foothills and onto level ground again though. We don't know that yet. So that being the case how and what certainty does anybody know? When do I even start lifting? Lockdowns how do you make that judgment? That's the million dollar question or in the case of what the U K economies being hit by billions per week and people really want to this question if I asked lots of times of lots of different people. Both Vala gist mathematicians politicians. I talked to and I get the same answer. We don't know So people are beginning to look at this from another perspective which is rather than what's out trigger point when to institute change the beginning to say. Well what do we think we could do to sort this out and walk? We therefore implement straight away spicer very interesting mathematician in Paris yesterday. And he's come up with very interesting strategy of carving countries up into a series of sales almost like mobile phone network cellular network cells. And thinking about how you call the country up not just arbitrarily doing in a way where you say. Well where are the people? Where do they go to work? We create sales where you don't divorce people from their work of course and these cells are ring-fenced so you have a Green Cell Novartis Activity Red Cell Virus activity so it's backed up by testing in surveillance and the idea is that you don't allow people to move outside their cell unless they have a very good reason to do so and you put in place. I measures in each cell to make go green by the vars control there. And once you've got to adjacent green sells a you merge together and so now people can move freely within that green area. You probably with me now. You can see you. Divide the country as honeycomb and slowly green or red turns to green under these circumstances. And this he says for a country the size of France or population the size of the UK. You'd be looking a five or six months of these sorts of measures in order to get control and have us bank to something resembling what life used to be like. What are we learning so far about public consent to such measures? Because obviously what we've been going through all over the world. These last few weeks has been absolutely without precedent certainly in reactionary. I think it just has been completely without precedent. So we're having to learn as we go along about what people are willing to put up with Have you been surprised in any direction by the cooperation of Publix? We knew that people were certainly very very good at getting behind this in the in the outset. And we know that people when you when you generally throw down the gauntlet in front of the people and say. There's a very good reason to do this. Let's get behind it people. Do I mean Captain told me who said I want to raise a thousand pounds by doing one hundred laps of my care home garden for my one hundredth birthday and threw down the gauntlet internationally and got twenty seven million pounds. He's raised now just goes to show. The people of re good at getting behind. The cause of the compliance was excellent. But when all this began the psychologists said to policymakers members of government there will be a period of time during which compliancy is very good and then people will begin to tire of this. And you won't be able to get them to do it forever. Many people pooh-poohed this idea but we're beginning to see evidence of this. Because if you if you look at the traffic densities own roads. Traffic density is rising again. If you look at the number of people who actually back at work numbers are going back up. People did get behind it to stall with but I think people are beginning to tire. And we're not going to be able to hang onto people's confidence in this forever so is is it possible then or arguable. Might even be a good thing that some of the lockdown restrictions being lifted that. We're seeing in some places at schools or small shops that those there's actually a psychological aspect To those decisions as well as a strictly medical one well one school of thought. If excuse the PUN is the by sending bag schoolkids what you actually do is facilitate a whole heap of spread through that sector of society and since we know the risk that school kids Ingende and given the schoolkids have younger parents on average the risk. Their parents is going to be really low. This is one way of a controlled spread through a sector of society leading to natural acquisition of immunity and resistance to this without actually placing additional risk in in the way of people who in my swamp so some cynics saying well one way to solve this problem. Is You just Let the scores Go back. And this will take care of the immunity and immunization naturally of quite a broad swathe of society. Now that's certainly one approach and other approaches to say we're not going to do anything to have vaccine. Most people agreed that this is impractical and at the opposite end of the scale completely to the vaccine and not doing anything is the we. Just go business as usual now. Most people are comfortable that we can't do that but so something somewhere between the two where we use. What will be probably much richer. Data informed by testing in terms of where immunity is around the country where the viruses circulating in the country and where people are living working commuting where the facility for spread is greatest. If we combine all of this information. I think we probably will end up adopting something like the model. I outlined that the Parisian mathematicians are proposing perhaps not identical but something which enables a degree of normality in some places reinforced by testing and surveillance together with Other signs brought to bear such as issues like vaccination when that eventually materialize. If it does an any drugs we can throw it this as well as continuing to protect the most vulnerable people either by shielding them or by testing the workers who are going to care for them and then only deploy workers to care for the most vulnerable people who know on our immune.

I Love Costco, Bible 101, and Don't Go Back to What Broke You

"Good Morning. Everyone it's time and you Chrissy. Confessions how are you doing today? Julie I am doing okay. I mean folks. I mean I don't know whether to talk about the tornado. Victims here in Tennessee are do I talk about corona that's infested and infected the world. I mean I'm just thinking what do we talk about other than corona? I mean. I've never seen anything like it asked my parents. They've never seen anything like it. I've asked my mother-in-law she's never seen anything like it. I mean who would have thought that the most powerful country on the face of the earth would shut until it's people they have to stay in their homes now folks. I advocate staying in your home. I mean let me be very clear and that cough that you hear Julia's an allergy. By the way and yes we went and both got tested. Because I am a hypochondriac between me and Jay Demarcus we keep our doctor on call. Twenty four seven. It's so scary and I mean it's and it listen it finally got chasing Savannah's attention. It has made them nervous. And 'cause when you shut down a country that tells you how serious things are. It is very very serious at this point. I mean folks I went to Cosco. Does that tell you how serious this thing was? Yeah right assets and this was at the onset. This was at the very beginning. Everything was really shut. Dan Yes you did go to twice you went to Cosco and because I was afraid that what if we ran out of something or whatever so I didn't want Julie exposed to anything so I thought okay as usual todd will take the bullet and I went to Cosco and I have to tell you. I love a cost guide. I do I love Cosco. I mean you can go in by like all this stuff in bulk. I mean you could find no that now okay now have only been going for twenty years but that's okay right but I mean you know I. I didn't know how to do it but I did it on my own. If you'll remember you had to send me a copy of our card right but but I guess my thing is is that. I hope that everyone is staying in. I hope that you're staying away from those people who are most susceptible which are the elderly and people with A compromised immune system Because I mean I'm reading stories every day of younger people who are literally fighting for their lives. Well there's one in California that that a under the age of eighteen that passed away yesterday. There's this young man in New Jersey. That's twenty something years old a picture of health that's now being transferred to was it paying hospital. Therein Pins Pennsylvania something for this new new treatment and so folks it's hitting everyone. I mean everyone. I'm going to take my mother food today. But I'm putting it on her front porch and then calling and telling her to come out and get it because I'm practicing truly social social distancing. I mean if I'd done that many years ago I'd had less trouble than one I've had but I mean it's it's to the point now too where you have to be doing what the doctors and the experts are saying to do what I found and you always give a shout out to anything that comes from South Carolina. 'cause it's where you are from. Did you hear Lindsey Graham yesterday when he was on the news where he said that if they did not pass this bill for nothing? It's two trillion dollars as the stimulus that he was going to go to the House on the floor and he was going to demand that the that the country stop paying everyone in the Senate and in the House and in the Congress to shut off their benefits and their pay until they could do their job. It's time to come to get time to together and you don't get to sit here at a time of crisis start negotiating for something that you couldn't get pushed through to begin with. But when I was laying in the bed listening to him I was like way to go. Lindsay is so true because it is an I do believe this is the Good Lord. That is saying okay. I put pebbles in your path and you refuse to look at it so now. I'M GONNA put a boulder in your match right. You guys are GonNa have to work together. Put Your differences differences aside and let's kit this country running again and we don't have to be a Democrat or Republican. A A socialist libertarian to have compassion for our fellow man. It's right I mean. Politics should have no play in compassion right and just taking care of each other exactly and so you know it's been a this whole thing has been very eye opening to the point that you know when you look at where we are and how people are responding to things and what have you. I mean it's it's it's overwhelming it really is. I mean I was listening to the mayor of New York talking and he was calling out the federal government shocking shocking that we would be doing that but he was calling out the federal government and saying that okay mayor. The governor the governor. I'm sorry Governor Governor Cuomo and he was calling the federal government out and saying okay but where are these ventilators right? Where are these what he was saying was? Why can't we put the supplies where they are needed? Most exactly because his state has more cases than any any state in the United States and I completely agree with him. You know we have it. Why things sitting surplus when we get people needing it. It's crazy exactly and so you know it really is when I look at you know I was in the grocery store because I yes folks I went to a Publix and this little old lady was in there and she was looking for hot dog buns and I had. I had you know two packs of hot dog buns in my buggy. And because that's what Juliette told me to get and they didn't have any more hot dog buns. I don't even eat hotdogs. People and I don't even care if how does our home Julia's the one who is determined. I guess she thinks that by eating a hotdog. It makes you more American. I've hated hotdog. My whole life and chloe likes them and again hurt her to have a hot dog once a month so. I had but you told me to get two bags to have overly so I gave this lady a thing of this hot dog binds and she said Oh honey. You're young. You probably have children. She says I can do without folks this little. Old Lady said she could do without. She was willing to sacrifice thinking that I had young children and that I needed a more than she. Well I didn't and I gave them to her. So you know it's those kind of things that there is still people out here that have compassion for their fellow human being yep and we need to continue more of that and we do need to continue more of that and I feel like that we in my family for the most part are very compassionate. People that we do have kind compassionate hearts but even I want us to be better absolutely we all can improve in

"So I feel like he watched it and you're like this game on three seconds. But like, you're the fancy football Queen, you should know what's going on anything. I'd rather not watch than the dolphins. And how about that will fuller willfully the fifth, right? Yeah. The fifth. That's that's uncommon wanting to the floor must be very proud right now. I would be do you think is going to be a sixth? I think so I think. Wife's pregnant right now. What's his name names? We'll we'll full he is the fifth. Yeah. I like that they had big plays against it. Was it blown coverage like what was happening here because there two passes in particular where there wasn't anyone within like ten yards of the receivers the dolphins defense in the past two weeks has been as God awful as I've ever seen it or as I can ever recall it in any two week stretch. Matt Burke, the defensive coordinator is looking for holes to to hide in right now he wasn't happy on. Oh my God. I mean, he and shouldn't be he should be irate because his guys have embarrassed him the last two weeks, and he's embarrassed himself. I mean, if you're a defensive coordinator and you play like you did against Detroit and then come back with this performance. That's about as bad as it gets. You know, they didn't lose because of a lack of offense last night. They actually ran the ball fairly well for point six average hundred sixteen yards Drake and gore were were both pretty stout. But that defense is not going to beat anybody in. This league was the last time. They were good the dolphins. I mean, we're halfway through the season. They're four and four and looking forward. Not good. No. Well, they're going to be a playoff team. No, I don't anymore. I not the way they played the last couple of weeks. You know, they started off three and hopes were high just a couple of weeks ago. They beat a good Chicago team pretty soundly at home and hopes are high again. And now these last two games in a row have brought them to mid season on a real Downer. Alison, would you think at the entre happens catch that didn't count as a catch? I thought it was fantastic. Why did you tell the people about it describe it? No detail if you can can't he made this catch where he jumped up he pulled it down with one hand. And then like looped it in between his legs. And then it was called off for offense of passenger Fearance. Here's incredible it it was Odell Beckham. I mean that that's what the diva receiver does. Now is he perfects his one handed catch because if you make a catch like that you're going to be all over the highlight reels line sixty you know, why public says scales? Due to die because more maybe still does and scale you'll spend way more by diet food, but connected another question. Sure, whatever you want get what is your feeling on washes, especially around this time of year when we are looking at sports, they call them, but they're just wash that are hard. And don't like how many squashes are like. And then they change. I'm kim. It just kind of make it simple one type of squash for everything. I get much better way. If you. Oh, wow. I've heard you discuss gourds. Yeah. Right. Yeah. I'm gonna make a back in my day out of that squashes. You see that only this time of year. You know, you go into a store, and you see the the big pumpkins, but that's not enough. They have all sorts of of misshapen squashes and gourds and some of them are little and like little hand size pumpkins. It's a weird phenomenon. This time of year and it's the whole holiday season. You.

"They lost I demand to know. Why public says scale do you wanna know now or do you want to know what we should take some callers submissions as to why their theory? Do you want to find out why iris in Colo four call our line to I don't know this person say? Hello. You're on the air. Why do you think Publix has a scale? I think. Well, I don't know. I mean, I had a fast people question. But I think I'm not sure okay. Hold on one second. We'll come back to you for fantasy football. All right caller on line four. Do you know why public's has scales? I'm here for the siesta, brother. Okay. Hold on one second. We'll get back to you. All right. So there's lots of people waiting in line for the SEC. This is the thing you say that it's not popular. But it is popular the dolphins lost yesterday. Allison and Greg, Greg. Do you stay up for these games? Because I mean, they lost by twenty Twenty-nine. Right. Was score forty two. Yeah. They lost by nineteen. It was kind of. I fall asleep on Lake Games. And to be honest with you, I fell asleep. I did wake up and I saw what happened and it was good for me because I had a the Andre Hopkins. So I got some nice points. Nice. Yeah. Yeah. I did stay up for the whole game. I thought and wrote that I was concerned it could be a blow out. I had predicted Miami lose thirty two sixteen. I thought so I thought it would be a little closer than it was. But yeah, you know, I I was pretty encouraged on dolphins behalf by the early part of the game. I thought most of the first half they were much more competitive than than I thought they'd be. And they were in it for for a good while and then as tends to happen to Miami something goes wrong, and then everything goes wrong, and then there's like a a collapse effect. So it's yeah. That was a tough match-up for them though. I mean, Houston so hot to Shawn Watson, so good. It's just crazy. And and I would love ESPN, stats and info. Oh to look this up and report back to us. How many times in NFL history has a quarterback thrown more touchdown passes than incompletions to Shawn Watson had five touchdown passes and was sixteen for twenty with four incompletions? That's just an astounding fact that I think is probably very rare. I mean, I think most impressive of what he did was he couldn't fly he had to take a bus because he was so injured. Yes. And he had a ridiculous performance against the dolphin like going into it. I was hopeful. Because I mean, it sounds bad. But you know, you're getting someone while they're down even though the Texans were hot coming into force straight games. As knows. I don't know why you're looking at me as if I watch this game..

That's that's the biggest story today. Right. The mega millions one point six million drugs. So I went to Publix. I had to do it. You can't hit the ball swing right? One in three hundred million. But I think this is a pretty good omen here. I'll tell you what why. 'cause I walk up to the counter, and I said can I get a mega millions? And the woman said, well, there was a ticket that was sitting under glass that was already purchased and so. She goes, well, you could buy this one here. And I said what what's that she goes. Well, somebody predator purchase it, but didn't have the money. They had a credit card. Whatever was so. You get that one a quick pick. And both of them were quick picks. So you I'll take that one. Angel left for me. Maybe walking angel it for me into the glass. They're a-walking names or with a default credit card. Angels nowadays. So I took that one. So we'll see what happens joys like eleven o'clock. So if it doesn't if nobody wins the same that's going to be well over two billion. I mean, I can only two point four billion. "Find out if it's a twenty four seven it's from what are we say brin from donald xactly yeah i'm excited because we do see that building when we're headed in the morning and a lot of people see it on their commute home and i'm excited i think that's great big old behemoth of a building with cool lights at the top man all right so this next door is fun i like it woman named cara kozinski from charleston south carolina was thrown a graduation party for son jacob on saturday so she ordered a cake from publix grocery store her son was graduating summa cum laude so she wanted the cake to say quote congrats jacob zuma cum laude class of twenty eight t your and you know the latin spellings on stuff you know exactly how that spelled the public's the public's store would not put that on the cake really there filters thought it was profanity they confused the middle word with the slang term for right keira put the message in the special instructions part of the forum on their website explaining what this term means seriously this is not dirty and we're not trying to dirty look it up right and they refuse to do it here's what they got where the mccague came to them oh my god it said suma dash dash dash loudly and then she had to explain to everyone at the party why it was censored well that's you know that's a good story that she says her son was humiliated really why are they so i assume they're suing over this publix has apologized and offered to refund their money for the cake this is that's pretty funny how much money money and it's it's you really gotta have a stick somewhere to be like i'm humiliated that that you couldn't aren't you more humiliated having to explain it to everyone it's lighten up you know who should lighten up the kid well the everyone everyone this story is just be airing on the as possible and we all deal with that every day whenever you hear us having in hong it's us finding a new word to say right right well not every time but a lot of the times but sometimes it's a word we we're trying to work around that's pretty funny though that the publix supermarket would have some kind of fill process that they would go through where they would decide whether or not they could print.
