Manager alex morris that. The outbreak in town was big but is mostly contained at this point. Have you been watching that closely. And what lessons have you drawn from province town. Yes no thank you for having me on. you know. we've all been watching this situation very closely because it teaches us a lot about our vaccines in our efforts to really impact this epidemic. So first of all before anything. I'd like to emphasize that this is actually illustration worked in that. This particular cluster could have been even worse if we hadn't had vaccines the other important point to to to to emphasize which is what. The cdc has emphasized that this outbreak. As we're learning more. Is that number one..

People wear masks in public indoor setting to help prevent the spread of the delta variant and protect others. This includes no one could blame you for finding the cdc's recent recommendations a little confusing in fact a lot of people are accusing the cdc of doing the confusing. What we very well might have here is failure to communicate which is why we reached out to science communicator. Jessica malati rivera. I'm a scientist by training. I studied microbiology and immunology and public health and being a science communicator means being able to translate that. She's one of the people who's finding all this a little confusing. It is confusing. And i kind of went on the record this week by saying that the may thirteenth updates who the guidance for vaccinate people to take their masks off was premature I think we got a little bit too excited to claim victory. And i think that it was in many ways kind of giving folks who've been really working hard and had done their job of getting vaccinated kind of giving them a cookie sorts by saying you can take your mask off but i don't think we're ready. I think we needed to see two things which was low transmission and high vaccination. And we weren't seeing that we were seeing a bit lower transmission but vaccination even up. Today is not where it should be where we can be kind of getting an edge over the virus and now the variants and so they've had to kind of course correct a few times and i understand that they were trying to base it on the data as it was available then but it still in my opinion and in the opinion of i think a lot of other public health experts was a little bit too early. What do you think the reasoning was for for doing it at the time was it just. Let's get back to normal pressure from the new administration from from businesses from state leaders. Well i mean you have to think about the environment and what we were dealing with. David data at the point. This was pre delta becoming as disruptive as pervasive here in the united states. And so what we knew about the original version of sars covy too was that if you were vaccinated you were very unlikely to get the virus and or transmit the virus that your viral load was really low making you very low risk for transmitting the virus so based on that data it seemed relatively true that if you were vaccinated. You're at low risk of getting and transmitting it now. The game has changed a bit. And that's we've had to pivot. But even still i kind of exercise out of an abundance of caution and felt like because i knew there were so many people not yet vaccinated that even vaccinated people still needed to exercise caution. Keep masks on for a bit longer. It created this false economy right. It made people think that you get vaccinated to take your mask off. And i'm like no. We're getting vaccinated to end his pandemic and it has to be this additive approach. It can't just be one or the other. It's layers and layers of mitigation so that we can be better about you know slowing this. How much of this is you know. A result of a public health crisis. The delta variant. And how much of it is a result of potentially bad messaging and guidelines from the. Cdc where where's that line. It's one hundred percent both right. it's hard to parse it out and say that it's one not the other because delta has changed the game delta is one hundred percent more contagious. It is a more complicated variable in this equation. So it's both that and it's like kind of throughout the pandemic failing at communicating right. We did not see the cdc step up as they should have in the beginning of the pandemic when it came to even just data aggregation and then beyond the data aggregation and needed to be communicating. What that meant so that there would be streamline federal and then state law statewide policies on everything from closures to masks vaccines. Kind of preparing the people that this is where we are. This is where we're going and we can end it by kind of all aligning on these things and going forward. Do you think there's a way the cdc could better message around the delta verion around the latest on the vaccine around who knows maybe a new round of shots if they can convince the rest of the people in this country to get the first round. I think that trust is built over time when you have consistency and transparency and empathy right. And i think that the cdc is lacking the kind of nuance to say. They don't know when they don't know yet to wait before they kind of change something without the all the receipts kind of on the table in available and to speak in a way that's like inclusive and doesn't exclude people. I've often struggled with how the cdc kind of forgets communities like the medically fragile or the immuno-compromised or even kids when they're talking about broader policies because kids are part of the unvaccinated population I mean they've obviously talked about kids when they caught tuck in the context of schools and school policies and openings for all that. but it's it's that kind of you know kind of nuance in the granularity of things. That are often missing and we have a long way to go. I think are the cdc does to unfortunately have to rebuild that trust that's been broken and continues to have little fractures.

"Province town is this little community up on the tip of cape cod. The new york times called a vacation. Mecca for the lgbtq community and so forth of july weekend. Everybody's excited about sixty thousand. People came into town ready to party. The bars were opened. the clubs. Were open and this is a community. One of the local leaders said they thought about ninety percent of people. There were vaccinated against cove in nineteen the guidance from the at that time said you know if you've been vaccinated you can go out without a mask you can go to a bar. You can go to a club and dance with your friends on the fourth in early july. The area around province town was reporting zero cova cases so this really seemed like a postcode world but as it turned out cova nineteen and the delta variance specifically was still lurking a week two weeks after the fourth of july. After everybody went home some cases started to pop up around province town the local authorities. There started doing some contact tracing. They had this team and nurses who were calling people up asking all right. So what were you doing a week or two ago and as it turned out there were a lot of people who are infected with the colonel virus who had been partying and province town on fourth of july weekend. So at this point. I think We're up to nearly one thousand cases that have been linked back to the fourth of july festivities at province town and this this was obviously like a pretty scary case. Study because you know. Here's a highly vaccinated community people who were living by the the cdc guidance at the time and suddenly you've got this major cluster of cases so that data and this whole story of province town. I think really fundamentally shifted. How the cdc in public.

"You're more comfortable and not take any chances with current virus. I i would say no one really important thing but with this east new These new guidelines is that the game is changing new people. So here's nj chisholm you again. The vaccines clearly are not a force field They're not armor that bills an impenetrable defense against infection and symptomatic disease is clearly possible. So i think it's a paradigm shift and just forces such reorient around the new reality in the era of delta. Yeah i think you know before we were looking at these these recommendations before we learn this these things about delta and thinking if you're fully tax needed now you can these indoor dense gatherings and still feel pretty safe. That seems like it might not be true anymore outdoors highly event highly ventilated areas. That still seems like it's okay but You know we know that these vaccines do keep you healthy out of the hospital. They help to keep the hospital but for me. Personally when i'm thinking about this like why jump into a risky situation like a crowded bar. Now that we're lucky enough to have the data that we have now and i'm fully vaccinated but i don't wanna be sick in achey and four su quarantine for two weeks or you know or anything else where nine just a little bit. Delta Variant Suspected in Provincetown Covid-19 Cluster

"More problems emerging in Provincetown, the State Health Department has now tied 430 covid cases to a cluster in P town. Some of those cases are linked to the highly contagious delta variant for Covid. WBZ TV Space Tomato spoke to some vacationers who are taking extra special precautions. Family is off to Provincetown from Boston Seaport for the town's annual family week of activities. But this time around, they thought more about their travel plans. We've heard a lot of talk about the increased cases, but we're more focused on going to the beach spending time with just the family that we're seeing with increased cases of Covid 19 in Provincetown. Which the Department of Public Health and now confirms some of the more than 250 are linked to the highly contagious delta variant. They are on our phones. Um so they're all photographed ready to go travelers with vaccination cards at the ready as some establishments will require them and we called the hotel wanted to make sure there was any changes that we need to know about just to protect ourselves or anyone else going to the hotel. And they were just requiring vaccination cards, families attending family, We have to sign a waiver that they'll follow CDC guidelines and Children have to wear masks both indoors and out, and the health department says the vast majority of the covid 19 cases there are called breakthrough cases involving people who are fully vaccinated.

"As right as right could be which is exactly what tito said which is not listening to the voters in massachusetts what our elected officials who are elected the good men and women elected to office in massachusetts. That have an our next to their name. What they are doing is actually listening to their constituency listening to the voter. So let's put that out there now. As far as what. Jim lyons said i will tell you. He is full of baloney. And that's and that's my kind word for radio. I was the last chair that there were seventeen. Republicans elected while. I was chair because i actually did have grassroots organization where we went out. We supported candidates. We raise the money. We took care of them. We also elected scott brown to the us senate. So i don't know what. Jim lyons is smoking. Maybe tito you can help me out here. And whatever you're giving him make sure it stops because he is completely delusional so our party registration has gone down in the past ten years and so it is. I will tell you that the other party chairs who signed that letter with me. All of them felt exactly the same way that our party. The party leaders. The job of a party chair is to build the party to have a big tent and actually it doesn't matter what your party. Registration is because like tito pointed out there more unin roldan ask -chusetts than there are people combined in the republican and the democrat party is in massachusetts so instead the important thing is your messaging how you communicate with people and making sure that the face of the party is something that someone that is relatable to the voters and at the current time that is not jim lyons okay so i'm going to pick up their two things one just to know we have invited. Jim lyons to come here on radio boston a number of times. We'll continue to do so and doing it right now. We would love to have the chair of the state. Republican committee come onto radio boston. "Okay all right thanks and we are hearing these stories and we are trying to always be responsible about the anecdotal stories were hearing versus the research data that we know you know we. We've seen numbers earlier. This week at city of cambridge showing that of their eighty something new cases this week forty. Two percent of those cases were in people who were vaccinated. That is not the same. As vaccine breakthrough rate because the denominators different but jennifer does that weaken the argument with those who have not been vaccinated yet when they hear will even if i know people who did get vaccinated and they're still getting covert. I worry about that. No because i mean it goes back. You know titas been saying it. And i've been saying it. It goes back to the death. It goes back to hospitalizations. The governor said it. You cannot prevent people if you get the flu. Shot anyone listening. If you've gotten the flu shot. How many of you have actually gotten the flu. Even though you have a flu shot but your flu might be twenty four hours or forty eight hours versus two weeks and that is the same thing with cova. We're never going to get to zero cases. What we want or zero deaths were never gets zero cases so if you look at this like getting the flu shot. It's the same thing you just want to prevent people from getting very sick landing in the hospital dying and so when we have over four million people and seventy percent of the population that was exactly where we were trying to get to. When office mess. I started so we don't want people to die and you know i'll say like it. The pooku on donald trump and poo on kamla harris. Because this was trump's big mission to get this vaccine going but because of his fight with ouchi. He decided not to publicize him getting shot in public. And then you had comma harris who as vice president of the united states. That i'm never going to get that shot because it's from donald trump. So what you have are people on both sides who stick their their heels in the ground because the leaders that they look up to didn't do their job and so for the rest of us who said we're going to go out. We're still going to get this vaccine. We wanna live our lives again. The fact of the matter is we don't want to be in bed for two weeks. We don't want to be hospitalized with. Don't wanna die all just a as i That i know when the when kamala harris said that it was actually during the campaign before she was vice president and the vaccines weren't available yet. Just that's a fact checking thing again. I understand your point and she is vaccinated you. She got the ma and she got from a massachusetts company. My donor she got on december twenty eighth and the president of the former president. United states also got vaccinated to your point jennifer. Okay tito just thirty seconds. Here last Point to you as well and then we'll go to break listen we are all inter connected Each of us actually matter when it comes to this and we each have a personal responsibility to each other our.

"And i think this is a really critical pivotal time to make sure that we're we're doing the right thing. Because we know as Marie brought up. There is not only a physical health component but there is a mental health component. That goes along with thinking You know now. When you get the sniffles you know i get. I get nervous when i get the sniffle. Now that's another component around the trauma and the mental health components of us being And i i actually had to quarantine for a month. And i was little i if you can believe that i actually wasn't the best around people after so i think there's there's a lot that we have to do and we and the i guess the last piece is we are all connected to the ana and jennifer we all connected and what each of us do matters because we can either be part of a solution or part of the problem so i wanna pick up on a couple of things there you know. We spoke with congressman. Jake aachen class on radio boston earlier this week and he sounded a note of impatience that i hear creeping into the public sphere. More here he is. I'm feeling very frustrated to be to be candid with you because the vaccines are in abundance now in this country and at a time when other countries throughout the world are struggling to get enough supply. We're having to give pickup trucks to people to convince them to get a shot. That is truly a miracle of science. So then we've got private sector organizations beginning to step in and say we are going to mandate this boston university which holds the license for wbu although it doesn't affect us and our editorial decision making decided this week to require faculty and staff to get vaccinated at had already required students Dr david hammer from bu. Boston medical center is part of the decision making body at b. u. Here he is on. Ask the doctor earlier this week. Erm increasingly concerned delta's much more contagious and increasingly hearing about delta leading to much higher viral load and that sort of nasal barracks in that that could facilitate transmission and lead to vaccine breakthroughs. So you got a private. You've got the private sector starting to say we're concerned do it. You've got a changing tone from public leaders saying this is getting really frustrating. We've given you the opportunity. This lifesaving do it It makes me think jennifer. I do not mean to make light of this situation at all. But there's there's that quote from patrick. Swayze and roadhouse. It's time to me nice and to be nice and to be nice until it's time not to be nice. Are we seeing a shift. In leadership tone and a shift in where the onus is to get people vaccinated so i you know i mean here. It's a really interesting question right because from a legal standpoint. I think it's going to become at some point. Someone is going to challenge this in the courts because again this is in a. It's still an emergency use vaccine. And i think that some private institutions are going to find themselves in court battles by people who have religious or health reasons why they don't want to get the vaccine now. I'm not again like i told you i vaccinated and my two. Teenagers are also vaccinated fully. Believe in this But if you have some some reason why you're not and your institution is requiring it and it takes you if you're a professor off the tenure track because you're zooming into classes and you're not showing physically to work every day or if you're in the administrative office or if your student and your great suffers it is going to be a legal challenge and so you know again. I go back to the messaging when our leaders are not leading when our leaders.

So we don't have places for people to live out here on the cape the folks who want to to work So we have very few workers. This year's every business out here is operating with fewer people than there used to but on top of that the businesses are either just as busy or busier than they had and they have been normal. Summer's on top of that province. Down did an amazing job Pre vaccine but and nobody wants a new shutdown but we basically reopened a you know we had a free for all these reopening and had like one week's notice and now everything is sort of back to normal quote unquote and people are coming here and they're ready to party. They are ready to gather the really. They're ready to be in big groups and we've we've found that with the delta variant. A lot of folks A lot of folks who've come to visit here and folks who work here have gotten Have gotten sick..

The massive mammal spit him back out into the ocean. I saw light and he started throwing his head side to side and the next thing I knew I was outside back in the water. My first thought was. Health officials warn Americans not to let their guard down

"Even with vaccines in sight, Public health officials are warning Americans to keep their guard up to keep washing their hands wearing face masks and practicing physical distancing because, as we said earlier, the virus is continuing to sicken and kill people across the country, and public health officials are pleading with people to limit travel for the upcoming holidays. And yet millions of people ignored that message this past Thanksgiving, and it's well. There's concern that too many people are still refusing to maintain or in some cases, even start implementing the habits that help keep people safe. So we wondered if there's a different way to communicate the message, especially at a time when Americans are so divided on so many levels. We called Seth Godin for that, because he knows about effective messaging. His Ted talk called How to get Your Ideas to spread has been viewed nearly seven million times, and he's the author of numerous books on the topic, including the best seller. This is Marketing. Gordon says. It's helpful to look at what's worked in the past, so people didn't stop smoking. When it was explained how dangerous it was. People stop smoking when Hollywood and TV made it less cool, and when CBS stopped selling cigarettes and when the taxes went up And at that point, people made a new decision based on new information, and they didn't say I am bending to authority, they said. I'm the kind of person that doesn't want to be around people who are smoking. And it's it sometimes of generational shift. It's not an easy thing to do, but it is not based on scientific data. It is based on the local heroes in our community when they start doing something We start doing something. So if we had modeled mask wearing in March when we could have in April when we could have if we had seen that from the people who were being broadcast all around us, it would have gone a long way to establish the people like us do things like this. And my hunch is that people's fear of death, which is real is going toe overcome our need to signal partisan division and it won't happen all at once, and I believe it will happen in pockets and the obligation that people have is to show up in their community wearing a mask because that sends a signal and it has a multiplier effect. Mm. I think I hear you saying that. I mean, it's important that the president elect, you know, wears a mask models. This behavior. The vice president elect wears a mask models this behavior and is continuing to do some sort of calling for people to get on the same page. But what I think I hear you saying is, that's not enough by any means. And actually, you need different people two model with like, I'm thinking about I don't know where I saw this picture. What was Elvis picture of Elvis getting a polio vaccine backstage at the Sullivan Show? Is that what we're talking about here? We need people that other people follow to do this. That's brilliant. That's exactly right. Because people didn't follow Elvis because he was elected to anything. They followed Elvis because it was a choice. They saw something in themselves and what we have the opportunity to do is model behavior's not at people but with our peers in circles to establish that if you want to be in this circle This is what we do. Years ago, I wrote a block post about bike helmets. And what I found. Is that people on the bike path in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Every couple either. Both people were wearing a helmet or neither person was wearing a helmet. I thought whom? That's weird. Nice hung out of the bike store for 20 minutes. Watching the rental of bikes and what was happening was after you entered the bike, the owner said, And do you want to rent helmets? Their dollar extra? And there was a pause, and whoever spoke first in the couple was the decision that the couple made. So if the person who spoke first said no thanks neither one war one if the person said, sure. Both of them were one and so the way to get people to wear bike helmets is to put both helmets on the table and say, Do you wanna rent helmets? Most people do
