"What do Biden's 1st 100 or so days look like? Well, his first couple of days. They're going to be very, very busy. Like other presidents. He's starting with a flurry of executive orders. Ah, lot of them will undo the executive orders of Donald Trump. He has a plan for vaccines. He wants to administer 100 million doses in 100 days, his team says they're confident that they can both manufacture and administer that much vaccine. But as you said, even though there's a lot of things Biden condole on his own with executive actions, he will need legislation. He'll need some buy in from Republicans. He has to pass that $1.9 trillion plan, but also he's planning to send to Congress on Day one, his immigration reform plan, which it will include a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. As for impeachment, Biden is determined to continue to keep impeachment at arm's length focus on the pandemic and leave the fate of Donald Trump to Congress. Okay, NPR national political correspondent Mara Liasson and we also heard from congressional correspondent Susan Davis. Thanks You're welcome. You're welcome. "Of Providence regional Medical Center that way as well this is called tele monitoring for example health care staff can remotely my monitor a patient's temperature even their oxygen levels and then share that information through a secure tax message this kind of program at Providence doesn't work for all cases but when it does it works to theoretically keep those patients and staff healthier by keeping them apart course they are relying on technology and here's what they found so far fifteen hundred patients across multiple states have been monitored for cove it from home only forty two of them have had to return to the hospital well the state of Washington doesn't track recovery Snohomish county does they've had about two thousand confirmed code cases and so far more than thirteen hundred our recoveries Michelle Esteban colonies details emerging about another proposed tax on business coming from the Seattle city council but critics say businesses are hurting enough already it was cutting Johnson the measure was introduced last week by city council members Shamus I want and Tammy moralis it was going to be a proposal for next year but then came the coronavirus right that next year was not soon enough our community with the resources right now just to barely able to survive so once is the tax revenue could immediately under right coronavirus relief payments it would apply to businesses with payrolls of more than seven million a one point three percent tax on compensation several times as it would apply to about eight hundred companies but the business community says they too are hurting now and an additional payroll tax could crush them others take issue with the fact that measures written under the state of emergency declared in response to the pandemic meaning it could not be repealed by referendum Carly Johnson come on news a couple of popular farmers market set to reopen this weekend if you're planning to go couples Brian Calvert says they'll be plenty of new rules to consider the first thing visitors to both the district and our farmers markets will be asked to do is go online to the market's website and take a note on the move is definitely more about awareness than anything else it's part of a multi.

"This is Bloomberg business week with Carol Massar and Jason Kelly from Bloomberg radio citizen one of the individuals that we increasingly reached out to during the corona virus was doctor Amy Compton Phillips she's chief clinical officer and executive vice president at Providence St Joseph health she's out there in Everett Washington the first U. S. case of the virus was confirmed in Washington state of Providence regional Medical Center in effort that hospital is part of the Saint Joseph health system which Dr Compton Phillips works with and she really became our go to person because she was dealing with a lot of the issues because she had to because that's where the patients were yeah you know I I think what's really important is for us to have a systematic approach to this that that we can end up playing whack a mole if we go after the next break shiny object and so what we've been really doing here on the west coast which at the moment you know were were neck and neck with the York not that we want to not that we want to race to the front of the line for this but for having the most cases in our system right now we're treating boards at about eight hundred people that either have known or suspected coronavirus and we're trying to do several things one is we're trying to make sure that we can triage people appropriately and get them to the right location if you happen to have a symptoms of the virus and because the testing is taking so long we can't definitively say we do everything we can to take care of you in your home if if you could stable enough to be in your home so we don't overwhelm the health care system right we're trying to make sure that in the hospital if you go have to go into the hospital we're putting you with other patients also have coded as well and for that we can minimize the PPP and then if you need acute care we have several ongoing trials of medications including eat that malarial drugs that the president talk about today including some of the direct antivirals that you heard about in the past few days so so I think by thinking through this systematically rather than you know thinking all over the place that we can actually kind of get a handle on what's going on what a doctor comes in Philip said it's really interesting insights and I also wanted to ask you what your seeing because one of the headlines that I think is grab a lot of people is the population that's being infected and it feels like the narrative has shifted there as well in terms of many more young people being not just diagnose but hospitalized are you seeing that have you seen that and what should we be taking from this latest data yeah email that was an interpretation by the news previously that young people don't get infected in all the articles and conversations that we've had in it with the positions in China with the positions in Italy young people who get infected is that they tend to recover at a much higher rate and so that the mortality is higher in patients that are older and people that have underlying health conditions but young people absolutely get infected and we're seeing that same thing here they end up less often in the ICU on a per capita basis but they do end up Lee L. and it is one of the reasons why it's really we are we are doing everything by hook or by crook make sure that we have enough capacity in icy use because we want to save every single person that comes to us with this bad disease and not not have people in a dying for lack of access to health care is there is some medication out there perhaps existing drug that's already in the system already you know the FDA has pretty much sign off on that we can see that may be another use of we have actually tested a couple different drugs that have been in other kinds of viral diseases have antiviral activity that have not worked but we're absolutely looking at the array and impact that the malaria drug that the president mentioned how doc Quinn is one that's been on the market for decades and so is that that has shown early promise particularly in China some which is why we're standing at the city here as well and then the antiviral drugs well it hadn't been approved yet it was being developed for a bola and and so but had another use and and that's the one right now that we have a couple different clinical trials going on to see really if this does work doctor comes filled only about forty seconds left here I gotta ask you since we talked a lot about it testing is it ramping up how soon will it be in your estimation to the point where it's really rolling in an effective way I think it's still a dramatic bottle back and so part of the challenge is that every patient that wants to be tested for every person that wants to be tested and does have major symptoms it means people with significant believes in a hospital somewhere it's not being tested and so having having really clear when you have a shortage you have to figure out who gets what first and we are in a shortage situation as we ramp up over the next month it'll get better but right now we really need to use those tests but the people who need them the most and that is our conversation with Amy Compton Phillips she is chief clinical officer and executive vice president over Providence St Joseph health on the other side of the country were really we saw Carol as you mention that's where it started or that's what we first really detected it here in the United States he has been on the front lines and one of the things I really admire about her candidly is she is continuing to talk with folks like us because she wants everyone to understand how fast moving this is what the best practices are because from a medical perspective we have to keep thinking about this whether it's developing vaccines where there it's developing treatments and the communication among the medical community is really just critical here right and to be fair Peter Robison our Peter Robison reporter he does projects investigations work here at Bloomberg news and it's been out there on the west coast he really you know opened up what was going on in Seattle really on the ground very early on and that's how his stories really let us to her specifically but his reporting and I do highly recommend folks to check out his reporting that's been online at Bloomberg dot com because it really was dated day in terms of how they were dealing with that and some of the struggles which we are now seeing really moved rapidly across the country specially to major cities well that's exactly right and I think that's what's so important is because of the way this is moved around the being able to say okay this is how we think it tracks this is where it peaks this is how it peaks this is the sort of people they're going to be affected it's really important for all of us to understand and I'll say it really speaks to another story in the magazine and get everybody should go online at Bloomberg dot com Bloomberg businessweek dot com because it's another story that talks about as you said tracking and we've been lacking a little bit as it goes around the the the the world and this is one thing that I think a lot of people making conclusions on is if we have coordinated efforts around the globe with other countries dealing with the health crisis we will get a much stronger impact if you will and and hopefully get our hands around it much sooner and we're lacking in that hello a bunch and so that's something that says certainly missing in terms of how we're dealing with this crisis and unfortunate we're paying for it as a result absolutely all right coming up we're gonna hear from the economics perspective we caught up with Diane Swonk grant Thorton on how the virus is impacting the world economy this is Bloomberg do you love them enough to do anything for two hundred cookies my big sell tomorrow let's do this including checking N. H. TSA dot gov slash the right seat to make sure their correctly buckled in the backseat brought to you by the national highway traffic safety administration and the ad council so here with a really weird word boundary buttercream it's not quite better it's better issue maybe battery is like put your your bakery a shop that sells artisanal butter product gig in America now where that's even more weird flirtation sure it's not really.

"There are now three confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States the first confirmed US case was found in the Pacific Northwest Snohomish county north of Seattle the man who had it had returned recently from a trip to Wu Han China but is will stone reports the local health care system isn't panicking in fact they feel ready because of a recent wave of measles this medical clinic in admins is not far from the hospital where that first infected person ended up after traveling from Wuhan China so it's natural that some patients have been asking questions we do have patients that are calling in and we do have patients that are talking about it with their provider staff Tobi's Compton is the head nurse here at the community health center of Snohomish county Compton is unfazed in fact she already had all the right protocols and infection control gear at the ready like this air filter stashed in health clinic supply room that fits over your whole head good that connects to the to and so the providers head is completely contained and all of the years filter staff at our clinics have practice getting ready for an infectious outbreak pretty recently last year there was an alarming measles outbreak in parts of Washington state mostly among unvaccinated children no one died it's often says he was a wake up call for the health system the measles really kind of in my industry body about while there's a lot of things out there that can be really contagious and can get really sick really fast measles is one of the most contagious diseases honor in contrast experts think this new coronavirus requires close contact to spread between humans but they're still investigating scoffed and says she's glad last year's measles outbreak forced them to improve we've recently grown our infection control program so it's kind of at the forefront of a lot of what we do and it wasn't just measles that push health providers to get ready for an outbreak it was also the a bowl a scare back in twenty fourteen that prompted a Snohomish hospital to prepare for high level infectious pathogens the set of isolation rooms with robotic devices Dr Amy Compton Phillips a hospital executive says they also have special isolation gurneys so that you can delete a person through a hallway you can keep the germs contains that hospital Providence regional Medical Center in average is where the man with Wuhan corona virus was transported after returning to Seattle infrastructure had been put in place to ensure that when something came around weekly ready but what about the people who came in close contact with the infected man before he went into that hospital health officials have tracked down more than fifty of them and are monitoring them in case they develop symptoms but overall the public health messages the risk of corona virus spreading here remains low Dr oz while gay Tana is the chief medical officer for a handful of clinics in the Seattle area that serve lots of patients from Asia and the Pacific islands she says some of our patients have already traveled to China for the holiday celebrations and come back and some told her they gots sick while there and were hospitalized in China that they'd come back and they are a symptomatic it's possible that it was gonna virus but she says it's also possible it was another type of

Everything you need to know about the new coronavirus

"A man from Washington state recently returned from China infected with a new virus that is responsible for about three hundred cases and at least six deaths it's the first case of the disease reported in the US public health officials say the risk to the general public remains low and NPR science correspondent Richard Harris joins us now with more Hey Richard Hey so we are talking about the coronavirus here tell us a little more about this disease well it's a long infection caused by this virus the corona virus and it can a corona viruses include mild viruses that cause the common cold but also nasty viruses like the marshes possible for two previous global outbreak you may remember sars and maybe Murray and this one cropped up in Wuhan China late last year at first Chinese health officials said it was just confined to that city nothing to worry about but there are no reports of it among people who travels from China to Thailand Taiwan Japan and South Korea and now the U. S. so tell us about what happened with this first U. S. case well the story was laid out today in a telephone press briefing with officials from the centers for disease control and prevention as well as health officials from Washington state as they recounted a man in his thirties had returned home to Snohomish county in the middle of last week we started to feel off so he called his doctor and he told his doctor who travel to Han that immediately triggered public health officials to suspect that he might have contracted this new coronavirus who's taken to Providence regional Medical Center in Everett Washington which is instantly were bowing mixes airplanes news placed in isolation yeah and then the CDC actually was able to identify the school overnight how is he doing now health officials in Washington state you say is doing just fine in fact the main reason he's in the hospital is to isolate him and make sure that other people are being put at risk okay so what exactly is that risk of spreading the disease well researchers don't know a whole bunch about this virus yet it did show up first in a market that live seafood in animals they do know it can spread from person to person and that could happen to sneezes or coughs or potentially someone shedding the fires and touches a surface that than somebody else touches okay so what are health officials doing now to try to contain this so first of all they're starting to contact the people that the minute had contact with they say thankfully that's a very small number of people because he was so vigilante call this doctor right away as soon as he got concerned about this and he was quickly isolated but the CDC has sent investigators to Washington state to track everyone he contacted that includes people like in seats near his on his airplane honest various flights back from China while so last Friday the CDC announced that he was going to be setting up screening at three major airports to check the health of people returning from Wuhan that was San Francisco Los Angeles JFK in New York did this man actually come through that screening process he actually arrive before they had set up that screening process but as a result of this case the CDC is no X. adding a couple of airports to its screening plan they're adding Chicago in Atlanta so for to total five now in its requiring anyone who's returning from Wuhan to be routed through one of those airports that get screen anyone returning from Wuhan but cases are now being reported in Japan and South Korea Thailand and Taiwan it doesn't seem like we're in position to catch all the cases yeah you can never get a hundred percent right but the CDC is playing the odds in picking the most likely travelers that said no this public health strategy is evolving quickly and if the disease starts to spread in a meaningful way I'm sure that CDC
