"You today Michael Cohen did issue a stark warning to the country that Donald Trump lost there would be no peaceful transition There's no way he accepted That is a frightening and startling thing for the president's own lawyer to say about him But it seemed far off at that point to a lot of people And people have said from the beginning there's no way he would do that There's no way anybody would do that So that is Congress remember Jamie Raskin And at the end you're shaking the hand of mister Cohen But you didn't quite believe what he was saying is that right Oh actually You know when I looked at some of the footage that Matt's Carter had filmed I was saying there are some other parts of the movie where I think there will be violence all the way up till January 6th And I was sort of amazed that I kept predicting that But what I hadn't predicted was that it would be so overwhelming that we wouldn't be able to stop it I mean the image when tabitha and Hank decided to come with me and of course we were all absolutely devastated on January 6th because we had buried Tommy on January 5th in a COVID-19 funeral where we could only have 20 people there But when they decided to come with me they said well will we be okay because Donald Trump is telling us people to come to Washington And I said of course we'll be all right We'll be inside the capitol And the image I had in my mind Amy was a June the second when Black Lives Matter had a protest at the capitol and there was this huge phalanx of national guardsmen and women holding bayonets and weapons on the steps of the capitol And that was immediately the image that came to mind That was the day after Trump and William Barr had unleashed that paramilitary police riot against protesters in Lafayette square And essentially what I hadn't seen was that we would not be militarily prepared sufficiently to defend the capitol building the House and the Senate and that there would be this band of violent extremists white nationalist Proud Boys oath keepers three percenters militia men There were airy nations there that came to lead the mob and smashed out our windows and began the assault on the police officers And that was the part that was not foreseen I mean like most members of Congress I was walking around with the assurance in my mind that if one person tried to evade the metal detectors and to run into the capitol they would be shot on sight And we were overrun by more than 900 rioters who came in and like Lindsey Graham said that day we all could have died because any one of them could have had a bomb And we're lucky that the Secret Service at Trump's rally were checking people for weapons because that's why most of the extremists left their arms back in the car or back in the hotel remote town because they were going to rally but had they not it could have been a very different situation And there would have been a lot more deaths than there were It was a deadly riot as it was But that riot surrounded an insurrection and that insurrection surrounded of course a coup whose details are surface it now through our investigation And I want to talk about those details But you were separated from your daughter tabitha and from Hank Now your son in law right Because you are on the floor of the House Talk about where you went and your fear for them where they went Well hey by the way was my son in law then he had eloped in a COVID-19 wedding with our daughter Hannah He's very to our older daughter and they have an Elvis Presley wedding out in Nevada but they come in to they wanted to see me speak which was nice and they saw the speeches that I was giving defending the Electoral College count and explaining what our constitutional role was We were not there to pick the president We were simply there to receive the Electoral College votes from the states as they had been cast essentially by the people of the states But after that was over they wanted to go back to Denny's office standing for your head offered his Capitol Hill office And they went back there And so when we were overrun in the siege began I was separated from them and they were with my chief of staff Julie taken They barricaded themselves in the stemi's office They locked the door and then they pushed all the furniture up against the door And tappa and Hank were hiding under a desk for a few hours while people were pounding on the door And they could hear the riot taking place outside And yet you have so many denying what took place even though they themselves were threatened like you were I want to talk about the latest developments and what you think is the most significant revelations to come out of your committee right now Those who have testified those who haven't vice president Pence has not yet testified but Mark short his chief of staff has testified we've learned Not to mention others for example we'll talk about what happened this week You had testimony from a prison Yeah we did Can you talk about this Well as I was saying I view it as taking place in three rings of activity And each one is fascinating and important to understand in its own respect I mean there was a mass demonstration for a wild protest called by Donald Trump That turned into a riot And so that's a very important thing for us to understand how a demonstration became a riot and how a crowd became a mob And the role that social media played in that The realm of the insurrection with the domestic violent extremist groups how they were coordinated and what kinds of contacts they had with the immediate political entourage surrounding Donald Trump But at the very red hot core of it was the realm of the coup And it's a strange word to use in American political party once because we do not have a lot of experience with coups in our own country And we think of a coup as something taking place against a president but this was a coup orchestrated by the president against the vice president and against the Congress.

"And WBUR I'm Peter rod in Phoenix Man I'm Scott Tong in a snowy Washington D.C. at this hour This is here and now It will be months before the House committee investigating the January 6th riot issues its first report New polls Today Show that Americans of different parties view the event very differently Whose fault it was whether violent action is okay and whether those who stored in the capital were mostly violent or mostly peaceful But then there is data about the writers Political scientist Robert pape has been analyzing the identities of the several hundred people arrested for breaking through the barricades that day He has poured over their court documents And get ready for some surprise findings Paper directs the Chicago project and security and threats at the University of Chicago and professor pay the number of suspects has risen steadily How many have you studied and what are you finding Scott we're now up to nearly 700 So we have been analyzing data a month after month after month as new people have been arrested And the picture remains the same In the thousands and thousands of pages of the court documents there are interviews at the individuals who are giving to the FBI and to others that are reported in the court documents And what you see is over and over and over again they tell you why they're going They're going to support president Trump And they're doing this because they think Trump is the truly legitimate president And Joe Biden isn't illegitimate president So this isn't just simply normal criminal behavior or escalations of street fighting This is clearly collective political violence done by hundreds and hundreds of people for essentially the same political purposes Now as far as the politics many of us might I might assume the participants were linked to far right groups Militias Proud Boys oath keepers What did you find You're exactly right Scott We tend to think and in fact are in past research It shows that right-wing extremists tend to be when they commit violence They tend to be strongly linked to skinhead gangs or to militia groups That is not the case with January 6th As of early December 87% are not members of militia groups like the oath keepers or extremist groups like the Proud Boys They're coming Scott much more from the main stream We're used to thinking of extremists as on the fringe We're used to thinking of their ideas as on the fringe What we see over and over in their demographics and in their motives really is a disturbing picture that this is coming from part of the main stream And I want to ask you to talk a little bit more about it because I was struck in one of your articles on this describing a good percentage of the participants being business owners white collar workers IT workers CEOs doctors and lawyers almost all of them had jobs Were you surprised when you saw these numbers Yes actually yes So I'm coming at this with decades of experience of studying political violence around the world What we're used to seeing are domestic extremists that are 25% or a third unemployed Here with the January 6th of the 700 arrested for breaking into the capitol only 7% were unemployed at the time they broke into the capitol nearly the national average Over half our business owners CEOs and from white collar occupations doctors lawyers and architects about 15% of those who broke into the capitol on January 6th have prior U.S. Military service But if we look at the normal right-wing extremists they usually have 40% prior military service If we look at criminal history we looked into the criminal backgrounds of those on January 6th 30% of those who broke into the capitol on January 6th have a criminal history of some kind often basically being arrested for drug misdemeanors But that compares to 64% of right wing extremists If we look at their age profile right-wing extremists normally two thirds are under the age of 34 here which two thirds are over the age of 34 They're in their 40s They're in their 50s And this is extremely close to the picture of the main strain And this is uncomfortable Scott for a variety of reasons It means a lot of our usual counter violent extremist solutions just don't apply Usually we think well we'll get them a job Well if we've already got over half business owners CEOs and folks from white collar occupations that's not going to work A lot of times when we talk about deactivating people or demobilizing them from right-wing and as we're talking about young people that we try to have them develop better relationships That is they get married and have kids Well these folks have already gotten married You see so then so we need to really come to grips with the fact that what we saw in January 6 is not simply the usual bad apples acting out yet again And this is crucial that we see this because it means that our political leaders are community leaders our faith leaders and also law enforcement We have a different type of problem on our hands going forward What Robert Peele let me stir in geography into all this as far as where the rioters are from Again the assumption might be most of these people hail from the deep red parts of the country You're exactly right yet again Scott that that is where we would have thought too before looking at the data But what we find is that those 700 arrested for breaking into the capitol over half come from counties that Joe Biden won In fact more the county voted for Trump the less likely was the county to send an insurrectionist They're coming from San Francisco Los Angeles New York City Dallas Houston Philadelphia Chicago They're coming from the city or from the immediately surrounding suburbs of the cities And they are in fact essentially political minorities in their local communities And they're not coming mainly from the reddest parts of America They're not coming mainly from rural districts This is also very very important for us to understand because we're so used to again thinking of extremism is the fringe We're not seeing what we're seeing is the mainstream married with parts of the fringe to be sure I'm not saying the fringe didn't show up at all But what made the storm a storm on January 6th was not the fringe participation but the main strength That's what those ten times bigger than the fringe and what overwhelmed the capital police And finally when you then look at the statistics that you've compiled and the people involved what do you glean about what motivated them You really see very clearly inside of the court documents the special feature of the counties that sent insurrectionists lost the most white population specifically non Hispanic white population Keep in mind that there are many political leaders and leaders in the media talking about the great replacement this right-wing conspiracy theory that the rights of whites are being overtaken by minorities or that the population itself the Democratic Party is deliberately replacing the white population with foreigners in order to win future elections Well those conspiracy theories we used to think of as being on the fringe Not part of the mainstream But all you.

them subpoenaing Roger Stone and Alex Jones and I can tell you that I'm not aware of anybody in The White House at conversations with either one of the those individuals But it just seems like they are just determined to pull out the phonebook and as many people as they possibly can in hopes that they find a narrative that will stick politically Yeah That's it Just open it up the phonebook Nothing Just Willy nilly Nothing to do with anyone that might have been I don't know chief of staff and deeply involved in trying to subvert a free and fair election in the United States Just yeah "The January 6th House select committee has just subpoenaed the leaders of the Proud Boys and oath keepers extremist groups that responded to Donald Trump's call to descend on Washington and who played central roles in the attack on the capitol The committee issued subpoenas to Proud Boys chairman Enrique tarrio and oath keepers founders steward roads as well as both the organizations that they laid It also subpoenaed a lower profile far right group First Amendment Pretoria along with its leader Robert Patrick Lewis The subpoenas demand documents by December 7th and depositions the following week Dimitri talks about it with Politico congressional reporter Nicholas Wu What this shows is that this panel is not slowing down at all as they go into the Thanksgiving holiday We saw a series of subpoenas going out yesterday four longtime Trump world denizens Roger Stone far right media figure Alex Jones and a host of other characters And today came subpoenas for these far right groups The oath keepers the Proud Boys First Amendment pretorian All of which are related to what the committee sees as violence leading up to and during the January 6th attack What are some of the questions that they are trying to answer Is it a who knew what was violence the goal that day or did it just turn out that way and leaders knew but they turned their backs on it That's exactly it So yesterday subpoenas all related to the rallies and this march to the capitol that took place on January 5th and on January 6th as people gathered for this protest by The White House at the ellipse And then march to the capitol the committee wants to know how exactly this was planned whether any of these folks are involved And as it turns out the people that were subpoenaed yesterday several of them spoke at the January 5th rally and then appeared to have been involved in organizing the January 6th march as well And in promoting it Today subpoenas relate to the group's many of which infamously were part of the violence on January 6th Proud Boys for example they've been telling their members for weeks to descend on Washington D.C. and in relation to these planned rallies around January 6th And then dozens of them ended up breaching the building that day according to court records This really shows how the committee is trying to piece together who exactly was responsible for the violence and whether or not there was any broader conspiracy in how it was organized Whenever we analyze these subpoenas there's always the question of cooperation We've seen that Steve Bannon has been fighting this He may be the most high profile example of this and you folks at political are reporting that threatening him with prison time didn't seem to break the ice in the way the committee expected Exactly It's been two months to the day since the first tranche of subpoenas went out to some of those biggest figures Steve Bannon Mark Meadows cosh Patel and Dan scavino and it doesn't seem that they've made a ton of progress on some of those figures As for today's subpoenas the problem that the select committee faces is in trying to deliver subpoenas to groups that may not be so organized in the first place The oath keepers own attorney recently asked to withdraw from a lawsuit involving them after saying that he couldn't even reach anyone at the organization You know if you can't necessarily serve the subpoena to them it's a little hard to actually carry out all of this in the first place Nicholas Wu covers Congress for Politico he was on Skype still ahead after sports traffic and.

"Israel had it. Israel wants difference between israel and the us is that the us would have had a pentagon process. If a us company wanted to sell this kind of technology to gulf st the pentagon would have had a process for reviewing and approving that that it would have been hard for trump to just completely keep bottled up within the white house it would have been known to career military and intelligence officials in the pentagon and all that whereas israel's just such a smaller country smaller government that you know it was just more. It's easier for netanyahu to just run operations out of his pocket. And the the way i'm reading this was that trump went to netanyahu and said look we're we're You know the gulf states want want this and you know it would be good if you could find a way to get it to them because your technology companies out of it and i. I surprised that this was all wrapped up in. The abraham abraham accords negotiations. Although that hasn't been reported that's just my own surmise but the The line seems to match and that trump. And netanyahu have sort of a plan to normalize At least starting starting off secretly but to normalize relations between israel and and the gulf states in order to kind of isolate iran and and to to to give up on a plate of the palestinians and And that That the the us told israel to go ahead and authorize These sales to saudi even knowing that they were used for things like the murder of Jamal kashogi well. That brings us kind of full circle in this policy. Mean one of the things that makes you know we talked about. You can't just Code does not have a national border necessarily right but one of the things that in law we haven't really seen pushed forward is the ability to have kind of protection over code right in the united states. For example the continual push has actually been for companies to have back doors and other kinds of key code accesses for across the consumer consumer spectrum. In this case that you know the attempt to then circumvent some of that internationally. We haven't yet had any kind of big take on this. Do you think that the pegasus project and again we'll talk more about the chinese side of this hack is an example of it might be time to start having some legislation that extends people's to lock down a software for their own protection or or. Do you think that's just going to be a pipe dream in the sense that no countries ever gonna want to kind of put that Liberty out there to be one of the most difficult questions in technology policy. And i i've been on both sides of this question. So i i don't i really feel like i am very persuadable but i right now. I'm even despite this spyware scandals that we're talking about now. I think my current thought is that the actual terroristic plotting. That's going on in the united states. You know mainly from Kind of right wing. Militia groups of proud boys oath keepers even more extreme versions of that but also still from islamic terrorism inside the united states as well..

Show looking at the deadly january. Six insurrection at the capitol federal prosecutors charge former new york city police officer thomas webster with assault with a deadly weapon during the insurrection. Prosecutors say he went after a capital police officer quote like a junkyard dog teeth clenched and this clench beating him with a metal pole and trying to gouge out his eye. Prosecutors say video shows webster. Beat the officer with his hands and rick their gear off causing them to choke because it quote cut off the officers air. The video of this is horrifying former. Us marine and a twenty year veteran of the nypd help city hall and the mayor's mansion. This comes as the senate held. Its first public. Hearing tuesday on the insurrection. Where security officials blamed intelligence failures the house. Judiciary committee followed up wednesday with a hearing on the rise of domestic terror. Some republican members tried to compare the january six attack to protest against police killings of black americans and insisted and tika is a threat this was democratic congresswoman. Corey bushes response. We cannot equate white nationalist violence with my collies on the rice stated his left wing extremist violence keith. Waiting a righteous movement for justice with hateful and racist white. Nationalism is outright ordinary and disingenuous. On your part but fuller white supremacist. In which you benefits we would not be in the streets demanding to be heard. We're demanding to be heard to save lives and let me say this before. Now we wouldn't be here and there are not people on both sides. There are simply no comparison. Meanwhile during this week's confirmation hearings for president biden's nominee to become the next attorney. General merrick garland told the senate judiciary committee. He would prioritize prosecuting. The white supremacists who stormed the capital january six. He compared the task to his prosecution of the oklahoma city. Federal building bombing in nineteen ninety s when democratic senator dick durbin of illinois ask garland if the deadly insurrection was a quote one off. This was judge garland. I don't think that this is necessarily a one off. Fbi director ray has indicated that the threat of domestic terrorism and particularly of white supremacists extremists. His number one concern in this area. This is coupled with an enormous rise in hate crimes over the past few years. There is a line from oklahoma city. And there's another line from oklahoma city all the way back to the experiences that i mentioned in my opening with respect to the battles of the original justice department against ku klux klan. We must do everything in the power of the justice department to prevent this kind of interference with the policies american democratic institutions. And i plan if you confirmed me for attorney general to do everything in my power to ensure that we are protected. This comes as former president. Trump is set to reemerge sunday the headline speaker at cpac. That's the conservative political action conference where he'll try to keep alive has false claims of election fraud and reportedly. We'll talk about Running for president again in twenty twenty four well for more. We're joined by reporter and author brendan o'connor whose recent book is titled blood red lines. How native is fuels. The right has latest article for the guardian headlined. The capital riot wasn't a fringe uprising. It was enabled by very deep pockets. Welcome to democracy now. Brendon talk about those pockets. Talk about this insurrection. And who enabled. Thank you for having me yeah. The events of january six were not just months but years decades. In the making. And i think that merrick garland is correct to say that there's an ideological linnea reaching all the way back do the kkk and the justice department struggles against it and and really even further to reconstruction and the civil war This is a current and a tendency in american politics. That has been with us. Since the beginning is being given expression and being encouraged by the conditions of crisis that we are all living in now talk specifically about the funding of what took place on january sex though on january six the rally that then president trump spoke at that preceded. The siege of the capital was funded in the infrastructure for was provided by a slew of right wing organizations that have gotten funding from various right wing from from the railing. Donor class That have been with us in there. Were involved in funding. The party movement that have been involved in blocking various democratic effort said passing progressive legislation over the years and then saw that this was an opportunity to try to ingratiate themselves and support the militant white nationalist factions within the republican party. That trump finds to be his base so brenton as we heard earlier biden's nominee for attorney. General merrick garland has said that this will be his top priority. Prosecuting the white supremacists who stormed the capital on january six. Now given the fact that you've talked about the funding behind this. How do you think he can go about doing this. If he is confirmed That's a good question. I think that the justice department's investigations and already. We've seen that. The charges that had been brought have shown us a lot about the social dynamics of what happened on january six than in the weeks and months leading up to it the way these different groups are organized and the way that more organized groups interact with the trump rank and file. I am not optimistic. that mirror. carlin's prospective investigation will be able to get to the root causes of how this happened and why happened not through any individual fault of garland's or any individual Prosecutor within the justice department. Just but simply because that's not the role of the justice department. They don't have the ideological framework where the political toolbox to be able to get to the root of these problems and brennan. Could you elaborate on some of the groups that have been identified as having participated in this attack Including the proud boys oath keepers and so on for sure so the oath keepers are an older group that were very active during the obama. Administration that kind of served as a bridge between the far right patriot movement Bat emerged during the late eighties and nineties. Oath keepers draw their base of support from law enforcement and military veterans with a lot of between these two groups..

And this story in the Massachusetts Secretary's Office Bill Galvin is proposing a plan to allow local voters to cast their ballots by mail for any future election. Galvan says The proposal comes because of the record turnout in Massachusetts and the national elections last year as well. This build on the success we have in last year's presidential election, where we had a record turnout knowledge in the election, but in the primary and the presidential primary Plan would also allow voters casting their ballots in person to register to vote at their polling place, and currently, state law requires voters to register at least 20 days before Election Day in order to vote. WB ape dot com. This'd is the news and talk of Texas. It's Chris Rock right now. I'm used talking 20 w Lazy w b a p dot com Pretty amazing what I'm looking at here. Just joining. It's been sharing with you a report that came out tonight. Saying that Officials. Basically, it says officials chose not to act. They had intelligence that they knew a Riot was gonna happen. They chose not to act. That's me something it up the headline. From the Wall Street Journal Exclusive. That just came out about an hour to ago. That's behind their pay wall. But I've been sharing exits from it that I thought were important to share capital. Riot warnings weren't acted on a system failed. I think that pretty much sums it up kept, you know, you know and not shelf. What I just told you capital. Riot warnings weren't acted on his system failed. The federal security apparatus retooled after 9 11 field intelligence on the January 6 rally, but didn't mobilize to prevent the bonds. They literally made a choice. They chose not to act. And This. This includes the FBI that part of Homeland security and they had intelligence that proud boys. Oath keepers. Three percenters was Planning this. They had weapons. They had maps and then one of the quotations from a guy who used to leave DHS intelligence branch for three years up until a few years ago, says there's no explanation other than Failure to produce Ah Products that would have predicted bobble body It was they didn't act. Um, part of the excuses Miria Bowser and other folks who didn't want to act even though they had information. The The National Guard or he was deployed. In the city in other areas, So there was absolute choice tonight. Utilizing. It's unbelievable. And now the president's on trial starting tomorrow in a another bogus impeachment thing for something that could have been stopped, and they chose not to. So, um FBI discussed the like the protesters would come arm during separate call with other law enforcement agencies the same day that the fusion centers held their call that said, talked about all this FBI said such information was widely known. Ah view over the official who oversees the fusion center. This is all fusion as far as working together with FBI. DHS accepted to prevent another 9 11. Into here was not the lack of intelligence of lack of information. It was the unwillingness to act on the intelligence or inability to Doesn't matter. So the point is exactly what I've been telling. They chose not to act they knew and they chose not to act. That is that Trump is so innocent. He is so innocents, the only thing he's guilty of us you could say bad taste wherever you want to say or being a sore loser. I don't know whatever you could. You could say whatever you want. The point is, he Did not cause this in any way, shape or form. Amazing. We knew monsters, but we did not know that the law enforcement knew and chose not to act That's freaking insane. Um Just amazing one of the share something else with you that I haven't shared yet from this article. A DHS. Then acting Secretary Chad Wolf chose not to declare a national special security event. The designation. Regularly used for gathering such as political conventions. The state of the Union address and past Super Bowls puts the U. S Secret service in charge of overseeing security and coordinating the responses of different agencies. Current and former DHS officials and national security experts have questioned publicly and in interviews why they didn't do this. Wolf never considered it. According to folks familiar. So the point is, they chose and didn't act. This is amazing. So there you go. This is absolutely amazing. This is going to be used front and center. I think tomorrow and during the impeachment Attempt of our former president. And we now have Absolute demontre have proven the 170 people that have been charged. Was the 70 people think 170. But And The feds have been using that in their charges in charging statements and documents already is we now saying that these folks were pre planned, they put this together, they So it's it's all obvious. So they're Democrats have screwed. There is no way Obviously, I'll say I would not be shocked. I'll be surprised if even mittens Mitt Romney, who loves To destroy President Trump it any chancing getters gets her or make him look bad. I'll be surprised of mittens even votes on this. Should we do the same thing? The Democrats did the US And, um the other thing is Um The other thing is, um I got to just tell you is that we should never be like Them. We should do what is right. So I don't want to say no, We shouldn't strip the Democrats of their committees like they've done to us. I think what we do is I think we don't do it in the past, even though it's worthy of it like they did, I think assumes something hit. We strip when we get the majority and say, You know what we gave you, Grace. We didn't go have to even for stuff that was said as a congresswoman, like the Jew hating of Ilhan Omar. Um, the violent rhetoric of Maxine Waters. The terrorists and inspiring Bernie Sanders. To that, and people can laugh because Bernie seems to be the nicest guy in the world, even those socialist, But he inspired a guide to try to murder people like Steve Scalise on a baseball field. We should not have had one Republican voting to strip uh, Marjorie Taylor. Dream of her, Um Over. Titles or committees. Here's the other part. Yes, I thought she apologized yesterday. She did a good job. I still think she's a nut job. But I don't think I think it is our is not our business about her seat. Something 1 65 or something? It was way, way, way off. On gets crazy because some of the People. Some of the columns I read today were saying it was a great thing. But she didn't get stripped over kicked out of the chairman of the House of representative Conference. That was a good thing that you give kids didn't get kicked out because it shows we're a big tent. We're not gonna kick you out based on your loyalty to Donald Trump. We're not going to stomp on and cancel people like Democrats to do. I wanted her. To be kicked out. I wanted her to be kicked out. Because she Through the president of her party and the leader of her party she had like him. Obviously, her dad doesn't like him either, obviously, but she threw him under the bus.
