Kishore Mahbubani says COVID-19 won't stop China's rise

"These days for China there's been an economic slowdown a trade and technology war with America. One of the few issues of bipartisanship in today's Washington then there have been protests in Hong Kong global criticism of Beijing's treatment of the Muslim minorities not to mention Western anxiety about the role of Y in those five G. networks and don't forget the allegations of Chinese interference in sovereign states across the region. Add to this. The outbreak of corona virus or covered nineteen and silently some pundits and they mainly in the West. They're asking whether we're witnessing communist China's Chernobyl moment what do you think well one distinguished intellectual who profoundly disagrees with all this skepticism. He's my guest today. Kishore Mahbubani is distinguished fellow. The Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore a former ambassador to the UN twice and a former foreign secretary of Singapore case. Your has risen several influential books on Asia and the rise of China the lightest one is called has China won the Chinese challenge to American Promessi as published by public phase in New York Keisha. Welcome back between the lines. My pleasure there'd be back now you've heard all these. These dial warnings about China and as I say they mainly come from listeners. What do you disagree well? I think it's absolutely certain that the return of China to his place as the number one economy in the world cannot be stopped because from the year one to the eighteen twenty or eighteen hundred of the last two thousand years the two largest economies of the world were always those of China and India so the past two hundred years of Western domination award. History have been an aberration. All aberrations come to a natural end and China's return cannot be stopped. And that's absolutely set. You say in your book that if Xi Jingping does not put in place San Succession mechanisms. America could win this geopolitical contest and bear in mind just a couple years ago. She overturned legislation on. Term Limits for presidents essentially might himself later for life. Some of these critics say that. How does that promote good governance for China and a sound succession mechanism? That will allow China to Rosza Unabated well I would say that the history of China has taught them when they have strong central government. The people benefit a lot. When this week government they suffer a lot and you look at a hundred years of humiliation. That China's suffered from the first opium war of Eighteen. Forty two right until the establishment of the People's Republic of China in nineteen forty nine. The main reason why they went through one hundred years of humiliation was because they had weak central government so what Xi Jinping has given to China is once again very strong central government this is an asset for China. I think he's going to be around as Vita for a long time. And as long as he's around. I think China will do very well. Okay will you say that this geopolitical contest that's broken out between America and China? That will continue marathon. Rice does that mean that Beijing and Washington a doomed to confrontation. Well the the reason why. I'm producing my book now. Has China one his precisely because I want to avoid a confrontation in my. I think it's absolutely unnecessary for the United States and China to get entangled in this confrontation because at the end of the day the primary goal of the United States government is to improve the wellbeing of the American people than the best way to improve the well being of the American people especially in this call. The crisis is to work with China and not work against China but of course unfortunately the United States has other goal and is the primary goal of the United States is to maintain primacy in the global order. Then that will lead to confront To leading American proponents of containing China. John Shaw. The University of Chicago Have Stephen. Walt whom you quoted approvingly in your book about the perils of American Hubris and exceptionalism but on China I disagree. They say I've been guests on this program and I've made this point Measham and casual. They say that a rising China does indeed threaten the regional status quo and Washington moreover will and should go to great lengths to ensure that China does not dominate the Asia. Pacific your response. Well I think the question is whether or not they can both live with each other In the region if if the United States by the way you know all the countries in this region many of them one the United States will remain strong player in this region. I think it'd be good for the region to have United States. Remain as strong Leah. By United States can remain a strong player without on fronting China. He can remain a strong player by working with China In in in many critical areas. And frankly if you ask the countries in the region What they would like to see they would like to see a strong China and they would like to see a strong United States. But they don't want to be forced to choose within China and the United States and we'll get to this question about choosing later on in the show but I want to stick with America. There is a consensus in the region. That America should stay but Foreign Affairs magazine. This is the Distinguished New York Journal to Achieve. Contributed this month. It faces a range of top. Foreign Policy Thinkers. They're all weighing on whether or not the. Us is in the process of global retrenchment The cover of Australia's leading Foreign Affairs Journal. This month is is called can trust America So Am I right in saying you? Don't think American showing any signs of withdrawing from Asia. Now I see no signs at all America retreating from the region and And I think that very strong as you know policy in America is to some extent made by the president but is also made by the deep state and the deep state has a very strong consensus that they got to remain very strongly Industry region. So I don't see an American of withdraw anytime in the near future but I do I do argue that the United States has got to behave differently. With China net once had One tenth the size of China's of America's GNP retailers but today China's be GNP BB. Dems is bigger than the United States. So you behave differently. Was this animal. What about that? Animals DASA more assertive. Now in your book and you listening to Katia Mahbubani. We're chatting about his new book. Has China one in your new book as show you dedicate a chapter to the question is China expansionist and you say basically China wants to respect global rules and norms but let's face it. It has ignored the ruling from the UN's Permanent Court of Arbitration. That was at The Hague in two thousand sixteen. The high concluded for those of you listening who've forgotten about this this is four years ago. Chana's conduct around the Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly islands it was illegal and let's remember Beijing has continued to build up a military prisons on artificial Alan's at drive out local fishermen and in the last few months case. Short Sean has been bullying Indonesia over the Natuna islands. How is all this respecting global order? Well you know one point. I emphasize said there were people talk of benevolent. Great Powers Turn Benevolent Grid. Power is an oxymoron. So as you know the United States today has not ratified the law. The Sea Convention. So in in some areas as China emerged behaving exactly the United States. The United States would never accept going to a tribunal to judge whether or not the United States valid or invalid claiming any area in that respect. China is behaving like the United States by just as the United States. Most of the time respects most international rules and conventions China. Also most of the time respects most of international rules in confections in many ways. China's behavior and America's behaviour is very similar in the international arena. Your critics would say that. China's maritime climbs a contested by the Philippines Malaysia Brunei Indonesia Vietnam Beijing has antagonized nations log New Zealand Australia with cyber attacks and and political interference. Nightside casual these. Not Diplomatic Wins for president. She hasn't he made some big mistakes. Well I it's it's it's interesting. It's always the rest. That is screaming very loud on this South China Sea When was the last time you heard a very strong statement from militia All of all of Philippines On the South China Sea. Why you're seeing behind. What is happening behind the scenes is a lot of diplomacy that is not reported in the Western media. Now I cannot comment on the side of the tax on Shelia and New Zealand but I I believe it was Edward Snowden revealed to us that if you live in today's world you can assume that anything you put up. There is being monitored completely by the National Security Agency of the United States. So I think what the world needs is new conventions in the cyber area and the world should work together do agree on some set of rules for what you can or cannot do in terms of cyber hacking spoke with the New Zealand professor. Anne Marie Bridie last week on this program and she told us about three investigations into Chinese interference in politics that a currently underway in New Zealand. But we WANNA go there now and finished your point. I was quite struck by a law in in your book. He sure well. You talked about the Chinese reluctance to conquer Australia quote. Future historians will marvel at the fact that even though Australia is geographically close to China. It was physically. It was physically occupied in conquered by far more distant British forces absolutely true. I mean if China was an expansionist power wrenching. Her travel all the way to Africa. He could have easily gone to Australia. Additional Australia. Remarkable accident of history. That Australia was colonized by British forces than not Chinese. I mean future. Historians will marvel. The anomaly visits Tom Switzer. On our in 'em I guess is Keisha Mahbubani the former foreign secretary of Singapore and President of the UN Security Council. He's now a distinguished fellow at the National University of Singapore. We're talking about his new book. Has China one now for some of Iran's listeners in Venice Matas whether your overstating China's rise and I WANNA put to you this very rule weakness in limitation surely because many analysts They argue that there's a ticking bomb in China it's low birthright and the aging population and this is the argument that will reduce the workforce and could potentially break social security system. How would you respond to those critics? Oh that's absolutely no question. That China faces a lot of serious Internal Challenges. Because you know it is to instill a developing country It's CABBIE DYING IF I get it right. It's still about ten thousand dollars. One-sixth debt of the United States has a long way to go before it becomes fully developed country. And that's precisely why China wants to focus on its internal development and not get dragged into an all-out geopolitical contests with the United States. So you notice that China wherever possible is trying to avoid getting entangled with the United States even though the United States clearly is challenging the United States challenging the United States charging China In many

Be Mentally Fit in a Fast-Moving World-1

"All right. Well I think it's just about a good a time as any to get started with this. I really appreciate you all coming to join me today. My Name Is Carrie Bradley. And somehow you found your way to this webinar series how to be mentally fit in a fast moving world. How about that for title? You know. It's always interesting coming up with these. Titles you how do you grab somebody without over Promessi? And I think that the e mail that I've sent out or the facebook post or However you found your way here I think might have really been the thing that caught your attention. And that is The discussion about chronic stress and the conversation really about stress. So the way. We're going to run this. Forty five minutes is As much as we can. We're going to make it about a conversation. I'm GonNa tell you a little bit about my plans for the next three weeks and a little bit about my story my real story and then I want to hear from you. I want to hear from you about your story. And will UN UN MUTE. Couple of you during souls out there who want to live with us. And then we'll get into some of the strategies that have been working for me and I'd love to hear the strategies that work for you so like I said this is a true conversation so my intention for these three weeks is for to all get to get comfortable talking about stress that we're under Because I recently just divulged was kind of one of those gulp. Moments divulged the chronic stress. That I've been feeling for the last probably four years if not fifteen but let's just call it for and what I've been feeling but have not been willing to really admit to myself until just recently. So that's that's really the reason for this series so it was very intentionally put out. There is a free series because whenever I've done anything where I needed to enroll people into I found myself getting stressed so I thought hap. Let's just do this for free for everybody and then I don't have to stress about how many people have signed up. And wouldn't you know it that we had over two hundred and twenty people sign up for this Webinar? Which to me is just remarkable. We need to be talking about the undercurrent of stress in our lives in a way. That is Really honest and so I'll use my own story to hopefully help you see your story or to see what you haven't been willing to admit to yourself so for the next three weeks we're going to be talking about stress and the opposite of stress or for what. I like to call mental fitness. So we have been in. All of us have been living in a culture of physical fitness. I've been in the fitness industry. My whole career and we are pretty comfortable with the whole idea of training to be physically fit and this whole idea of mental fitness. It's really no different than physical fitness and so over the next three weeks. We're going to talk about what mental fitness looks like and how to train to become mentally fit and I think the first thing that we need to do in doing that is to really see our weaknesses to really see where we're not so fit where perhaps some of those muscles have atrophied and so I will use myself and my own story to really to offer you a mirror to see into your own life and then we'll share with each other so let's get going so I guess we should start with my story and I won't make this too long. I promise but it will lay out the the platform I guess for us all to talk about ourselves and feel free to jot notes and also feel free to Put out questions in the chat bar. I Have Brian who is monitoring monitoring the chat bar for pertinent questions. And once we go and start anew you guys we can. We can get you talking as well so a little bit of a background on on me. I have been teaching my entire life type of physical or mental training. I can safely say. Now it's forty years of teaching. I started teaching when I was fifteen years old as a figure skater. And so for my whole life I've been really inservice of helping people to feel better and perform better and honestly I think incessantly about how how to help how to help because what what really breaks. My heart is to see myself and others not living in our fullest potential. And you know it's interesting because it's very easy for me to put that teachers had on and what's not easy for me is to take my teacher's hat off when you've been doing something for forty years you get pretty comfortable in a role and I think that in some ways that was what really hid a lot of my own symptoms of stress and burnout from myself was that I was always teaching this stuff but yet really wasn't looking or was it honest with myself enough to see some of the things that I wasn't doing to see some of my own

It is the latest argument placing your face and tech at odds the issue remains a global one looking into it after these tech headlines. While we technologies denounced US actions against it referring to them as bullying this week as it implored European governments to resist American pressure to follow suit. The Trump administration's moved to blacklist Weiwei last week marks in unprecedented assault on not only the Chinese telecom company, but also rules-based, global trade, at least that's according to Abraham Lou while ways rep to the European Union Washington's move to block while away from sourcing components from running certain features on Google's Android operating system, also threatens its consumer business. US officials said this week, they would wave that measure for ninety days for some suppliers. These story remains in motion, follow the latest at wsJcom. The US has sharply slowed down approvals for the nation's semiconductor companies to hire Chinese nationals for advanced engineering jobs. This is significant in part because Chinese nationals account for a large share of non US citizens hired for such work and were talent. Supply. Domestically is often scares the disruption which started last year has affected hundreds of jobs across the industry at companies, including Intel Qualcomm and global foundries, Inc. The journal says this also shows the conundrum US companies face in dealing with China and technology highlighting how decisions aimed at protecting US competitiveness in one way could hamper it in another. And mid career professionals are looking for a reboot at coating boot camps the journal writes how some middle aged people seeking a career change are enrolling in New York City schools with varying degrees of success coating boot camps small technical schools that prepare adults for work as entry level software developers are known to challenge, even with the journal affectionately calls twenty something geeks who comprised their primary demographic in a recent survey the average graduate reported a forty four percent increase in salary to sixty two thousand dollars and nearly half landed a fulltime job in computer, science, or engineering coming up, facial recognition technology remains under fire. How tech startups around the world are trying to fan. It's flames support for this podcast and the following message. Come from Deloitte, a global leader in digital transformation Elvin clients apply technologies like cloud. An AI to their unique business challenges. Deloitte, god. Com slash look. Again. In. There are many ways to make our society. Secure without living in a security state, this legislation tries to strike that balance this week sense time group, a Chinese artificial intelligence startup is left. Fending residual flames from all the facial recognition attention last week at the Wall Street Journal's CEO council conference in Tokyo, Tuesday since times, Bing zoo, addresses the company's facial recognition tack in its mass surveillance systems. He thinks the tech should be regulated rather than band. We'd be actually thinking about the allots as any new piece of technology. Sometimes there are two size. And right now, I think there is discussion around the, the privacy around of individuals being covered by all these cameras such as there's a camera were there. There's another camera so we can see that these cameras has been setting up in the physical world, right? So right now with a nation the surveillance. The compatibility has been operated a lot. So basically, there are actually debase around whether these type typo technology should be deployed against individual Promessi sense time, which has received a funding from these Saudi-backed. Softbank vision fund continues to navigate rising privacy concerns, as companies around the world. Look to a I to store and analyze data of people's faces. I think this is video meaningful and useful debate a yearly it would alert everybody to take up the thought around what policies and what regulations to be should be in place to guarantee that these technology, these new piece of technology, what wouldn't bring damage. Right. But still think about it, right. They, I is such as face recognition, there are two sides. One side is, is around individuals is around privacy of individuals the other side he's around public good around. Well, public transparency. Around row, anti-terrorism, less crime more efficient city, right? So technology has been has technology actually has been the lying ingredient for cities to grow and debate will no doubt continue around the globe. The Wall Street Journal covers it all for more on the CEO council in Tokyo, this week, head to wsJcom wrapping up the tech news briefing for now. "I'm gonna call it explanatory continuity, and so this is basically what you stroke. The an argument any argument with a set of premises. And you know, when you are a lot of extents each premise has terms that right like AB and see again, abstract form. Okay. And then you fall through a series of you know, stamps it inclusion correct? Okay. So now if the argument is underway now invalid by the basic way, the argument what one one one way arguing comedian ballot is if are comes in the conclusion that don't show up in the promises. Mean someone kinda like put Promessi and somewhere along the non sequitur dumping the primacy to some step along the way, including if not collusion itself. If you have a b and C in the premises, and you end up with the conclusion that someone made non sequitur Yong question, it somebody puts forward a premise that is incorrect, but the people that are hearing the premise don't know, it's incorrect in the person putting it forward doesn't know. It's incorrect, and they all accept it with that make a problem. Be a problem. But with the second part is going to get you'll see why that's not an issue in this case. Okay. Something that literally everyone agrees with or an pretty pretty great. I guess what? I'm as is a lot of times, for example, people will put forward a hypothesis that sounds very good like everything about it seems like it should happen. The way that it that you would expect it would happen are off. Right. But then you test it and you get the surprising result. That isn't what anyone expected right because there's something, and then they have to investigate to see what is it about what we thought should happen that made it not happen because everything we know points to this. And then later when you investigate you, find out something new that you didn't know before because component that fits in because you test it, right? Yeah. I just wanna clarify just you know, what we're talking about. I mean, we're obviously talking about a bible. God. Right. So you're talking about. Interesting thing you want to get into that. And this would be. An you only armed from Facebook. I work on your path. No, you might not know that I'm actually AP more. Student. Palmos your night Greg now, but. With this argument. I could actually I looked at in comparative religion once you get past there. Okay. Once you get to the conclusion of it. You can go from a number of different places with it which arly beyond the scope of argument, and one of these is very interesting because you can you can have a physics equivalent to this metaphysics. Okay. It's ideal metaphysics that argued for these kind of equivalent of it and from physics equivalence you can actually demonstrate. Existence all the all in states, not so scrubbing, but as. Deep-felt cousin six should just go start. Okay. But a home wrecker, I wanna do like hallway York on that. Which would. Okay. For the people that aren't could demonstrate that God could a basis for what people calling God, and what you were calling in comparative religion, actually based on this metaphysics thought about all. But but that aside for now. So all deal reason, I asked was are we going to try to, you know, support the idea that there was a global flood in talking snakes, and you know, for now into Nalchik it. Thing. Global flood. You're serious problem with being on your any pressure. Granted. Anyway. So. Are you going to the content phenomenon? Newman on problem. This is only an awful like philosophy. So I'm just gonna roll my eyes back in my head and turn it over to Tracy. Now. Don't turn it over to me is just go. What is what are these? Let's lay out. Let's start. Okay. So. External skepticism, you have basic our word for it. You have your perceptions which is called the phenomenon right? You're what you see on the willow. Phenomenology of it the way it seems you have perception the net. There is what I said people have perceptions next. Okay beyond. The perceptions though is Nicole Newman. "Has there been a political collapse like that. But this is again evidence that the gap between Trump not president and Trump president is massive, right? Like like, this is why Jeremy was saying earlier like our decision in six sixteen was based on the evidence at hand the evidence at hand was Steve Bannon was the campaign chairman. I mean readily things you have to remember about Trump, and this is again to his credit as far as I'm concerned is that the he's got bad apples. The establishment Republicans would not join his campaign. He gathered to people who would come with them. And then he got rid of them nine dumped them, I. I. The point that I'm making is Trump as president in policy, terms and staffing. Terms has not been Trump is candidate attract different human. Night and day. I mean, like the in the administration every step of the way, the administration has gotten better in terms of staffing. There's no question voting for Donald Trump. I was absolutely convinced that he was better than Hillary Clinton. I know way expected him to be good as he's been. He's been forced into that corner by the resistance. That's true. But I know very few people who predicted the President Trump would be this. Good ridiculous. Yeah. We I was hemming in hiring. No, I was I was like hoping it wasn't. Because. I hope you're not vote for you. Also, one of the one of the real concerns about personality wise was that the rumor was that he was a real micromanager. And it turns out that he's a micro manager about the things. He cares about like his Twitter when it comes to national policy, then his from a national. Promises promises. Kept one of the things he said is you know, I don't know how to be president. But I'm gonna point the autumn it he did he did a point some of the best any better. Even after all the worst, people quit, her got indicted. Michael was a member of his administration the truth. That's exactly wrong. And then he got his personal lawyer who also the head of the finance is one of the co-chairmen is like there are three RNC finance chair people into of them ended up indicted. It wasn't the best nuts. I heard I have to say I I heard a comedian at the at the comedy store few weeks ago. She was not fund of our president have she had a great line about how Donald Trump Promessi is gonna pick all the best people. But so far the only one qualified for their job as stormy Daniel. Yeah. Oh, it's amazing though about the Israeli intelligence says, it's great. It's twenty twenty Palestinian terrorists. It's fabulous. Although I will say that they do make kind of the modern TV writers mistake, which is they they keep trying to humanize terrorists in a way that off. But then kill him. That's really do that. They always make it like our fault that they're terrorists. They never humanize them by saying, oh, they had. They side with the good guys this routine where it's like this person's really good person except that her husband got killed by Israelis a firefight. Will.
